• Minnesota Mall of America Meetup Compendium

There are so many of these going on lately,  I might have to start a compilation thing up.  This one happened on Saturday over in Minnesota at the Mall of Amercia.  I really want to check that place out some time...   Have some copypaste after the break!

"From the census, everyone had a good time! The other admin and I only thought we'd have ten or fifteen people attending, but at our peak, the group was at 48 people!
The meet was at the Mall Of America and started around 11am. The first thing we did besides meet each other was raid the toy store next door in the pink aisle. They had ponies there! When we finished that, the other admin came back with nametags, which was especially helpful since we were such a large group. @_@
We walked through Nickelodeon Universe, up some escalators and to the food court. We had an idea to seat people by favorite pony, but the group was just too massive and we couldn't organize it quick enough, so we just went ahead and ate. This took up a good amount of time, though!
So, to make up for what we wanted to make as an ice-breaking lunch, we decided to gather in a circle and have everyone go one by one, saying their name, favorite pony and any added stuff. We really had to yell in order for anyone to hear! The guards were watching us, but let us finish up...
    Right after this was probably a lot of peoples' favorite part: pony-izing the Best Buy computers! Eventually we had everything from episodes, to fanfics to Equestria Daily up. Eventually we left when the staff started getting annoyed, though. ^ ^;;
Then we wandered around, got some free sample cheese, went to a magnet store, to Gamestop and to Barnes And Noble. I had to leave right after Barnes And Noble, but I heard that everyone gathered around to watch Sonic Rainboom on a laptop and went to Buffalo Wild Wings for dinner at five!
Again, everyone had a fun time and we're hoping to do another meet-up sometime soon!
If you're a Minnesotan brony and would like to suggest ideas for another meet or just get information and talk to other bronies in the area, our RDN group is here: http://rainbowdash.net/group/mnbronies
    Thanks for attending, guys! c:"

    2. If you mock ME, I'll probably tolerate it. Mock SOMEONE ELSE, and that's a WHOLE different story.

Tolerance doesn't mean standing idly by while good people are being hurt.

that's a false dichotomy if I ever heard it. I'd say the people need to properly groom and dress, but that isn't what people would regard as "hate."

it's easy to be critical while not being a dick, and being critical will never give free reign to act like a douche about it is all.

This is why I believe we need an actual login system so we can keep things like this under control.

      @TheEvent
Being at the meet was absolutely amazing. Meeting everyone was very enjoyable and we ever got people who were at the mall and not in the group come ask some of us where we got our shirts! Overall it was a great meetup and I can't wait for the next one!

Wait am I doing this wrong or are we not supposed to post about the actual post and just be dicks instead? (btw I'm talking to both sides. Yes it's nice to see fellow ponies stick up for others, but when it gets this out of control individuals need to learn to just stop. No one is winning here. The MN bronies will still go on and do things. Sorry we all don't fit the perception of hollywood perfect that everyone likes to see represent different groups)

    7. What I want to know is why anypony feels it's their business to weigh in on the appearance of meetup attendees. This is a thread about a brony meetup group, not 'am I hot or not?' The people saying "oh, these people are fat, these people are ugly, these people are awkward" are being both [a] shallow and [b] busybodies.

Heya, what do you say about the army? Should I join it?

      @Purple Tinker

Well, I guess I see what you mean, "L&T or I will not Tolerate you." And I see that's completely reasonable when some (SOME) of our side of the argument are just downright hatin on em. But I kinda wonder if it's just escalating shit yknow? Sometimes L&Ting people and attacking/killing them aren't mutually exclusive. So understand their viewpoint first (they're human, it's not impossible), then do what's necessary considering that. I think. Ya see what I mean?

      ReplyDelete
    9. not necessarily love and tolerate, but certainly take a viewpoint of 'that's not for me' over 'you're a faggot because i don't like that'

But I'm going to understand others while I do shit and them let them see my own viewpoint too if possible.

    12. @Purple Tinker

Not standing idly by while good people are being hurt doesn't mean actively antagonizing the people being hurtful, either. Like I said, if they're looking for attention, that will encourage them and make their posts continue to take up space; whereas if they're being sincere and are potentially reasonable, that will prohibit meaningful interaction. Neither outcome is desirable.

I think it's admirable and absolutely correct to care for those being bullied, but I can't help but feel as though you're not going about it in a constructive manner that is likely to lead to a positive outcome for the parties involved. No offense.

True, the chart is just a simpler generalization. The hierarchy is flexible, and differs depending on each individual. But I feel like it's just a part of human nature. Still, it says “love the sinner, hate the sin,” I guess the hierarchy can still exist as long as it limits itself to the activity alone. I don't hate furries, but I hate the act of being a furry. How's that, better?

Do you really think we take our morals from a TV show? Most bronies just happen to be nice people. You'll also notice that nowhere in the show are the words "love and tolerance." While I doubt it and the other sayings are truly serious it doesn't necessarily make them bad philosophies. We can't always get along be but we can always try. There's nothing wrong with trying to make the world a nicer place to live.

I'd like to go to a meetup myself some day, but I'd much prefer a smaller one of say, five to ten people.

I find I do not enjoy myself in such large groups (20+) nearly as much. They feel more hectic (with everyone everywhere), more forced (when trying to actually do anything specific), and there is less of an opportunity to get to know anyone or become their friends or anything just because there are so many.
      --
Love and tolerance isn't something people should try to live by or take to heart or push onto other people just because of FiM. Things such as being kind and considerate are common principles that are not just a part of this community, nor do they exist solely because of the show. They are an overarching theme in FiM because they are an overarching theme in life. There are many people everwhere who try to hold themselves to similar standards.
      --

These are the people who *want* to stand around in public and awkwardly chat with strangers in a mall about their shared love of a children's television show (that's run a grand total of *one* season).

And if they want to do that, let them, they're not hurting anybody.

I think that gathering to celebrate a community centered around something you enjoy is a wonderful thing. Everyone should have such luck.

      ReplyDelete
    57. Ya, this is kinda funny, but I think you're right. The main problem that caused all this is the pic chosen to be accessible at the start. (nono, not your fault Seth, you couldn't have known. (nor is it anyone's fault at all.))

I dunno why exactly, I guess some people stood out too much? It's a group photo. Everyone's supposed to blend in into a crowd or something but some people accidently got attention they didn't want. I really feel bad for them.

For WA brony meetups. I didn't have time for those because I was busy with class and stuff. It ends this week but... I probably can't get in the Penny Arcade Expo with all the tickets sold, and rainfurrest...?! umm... ya... sorry if I offended anyone but no. Ya, I'm a nerd, but I have limits.

Hey, did you notice if you type My Little Pony into google, NONE of image results are FiM stuff? The ugly ones we always hated. Or type bronies and see what comes up first? All that negative coverage. I wonder, one day, our rep is gonna plummet so badly we'll be considered worse than Furries. And I said I personally know furries arent as bad as what the stereotype depict them, but most people hate the fuck out of them anyway. And I'm just worried that we'll be looked at that way by society, too.

People don't like us, do they...?

      ReplyDelete
    58. I don't see any ugly people in the photo.

What I do see are a bunch of nerds!! Which is a pity because I thought the fan base encompassed more people than those who already have a predisposition to trying something unorthodox for their age group. A pity.

As to some of the self claim "bronies" who feel the same as Purple Tinker, not all of the people who watch MLP are going to act the same way as you, DEAL WITH IT!! I personally don't like the word "Brony". I don't believe that nameless characters of a show who barely or never speak should be given a name and storyline by some that the rest of us are forced to go by.

As to these so called "trolls" I believe they are upset that they aren't represented and are constantly painted along with others who can be, well, more over the top in their love. I would urge these people to attend the meets so that other types of fans can represented.

GENETICS?! ...I...I...ge...ne...tics... wow... all that calmness just disappeared from me... BWAHAHHAAHAHAHAAH, you're so UGLY, you need GENETIC MANIPULATION to fix it?! GOOD GOD, SIMPLY BETTER CLOTHES AND SOME SKIN CARE WONT DO FOR YOU HUH?! NOR WOULD PLASTIC SURGERY? NO! YOU BLAME YOUR PARENTS FOR YOUR FACE?! YOUR MOM'S FACE IS SO UGLY, THAT SHE SOMETHING-SOMETHING-CHEAP-UR-MAMA-JOKE.

nonono... no! NO, FUCK NO! If you think having average outer appearance is only the GENETICALLY CHOSEN ONES can do, you're parroting the lame-ass excuses fat bastards make to be a fucking sloth on their looks. "OMG i JUST HAZ BIG BONEZ!!!1!" All the bullying disappeared when i started checking myself in the mirror! Just GONE! The source of all my problems, poof! Everyone tolerates me more now! I thought I had it bad, but everyone else put so much to keep their image up. They take a lot of stress from it. I understood them. And this is my conclusion. I...

      ...

      a) Why would I care, regardless of being a brony or not, what people think of me? Isn't that like, the basic message of the past 50 years? be yourself coz everypony has the right to feel good without having to succumb to stereotypes?

My job would sort of require me to be harsh, emotionless and I should be wearing a suit and a necktie 24/7. Guess what, I don't and I'm fine with it and it doesn't seem to interfere much with my job.

      b) We are who we are, and we will lose that the moment we start trying to please the outsiders just so they accept us.

And don't come with all the "they represent the community" stuff. They represent the values of the community, and that has nothing to do with what you wear, how you wear it or how you look like in general.
Someone would be hating or simply ignoring the fandom solely because (s)he saw a meetup where people didn't look "good enough" for his/her liking? Big deal.

Don't judge a book by its cover.
May I advice watching Bridle Gossip again? :P

I'm not hating, I'm just tired of people thinking it's OK to be fat, and not take care of their bodies, etc... I work in healthcare, and it makes me sad every time I end up with an obese middle-aged person who's already having medical problems that they shouldn't be having for 20-30 more years.

Hell, my friend works in an area where people are being put on heart medications in their MID 20's for hypertension and similar issues...

It's sad. (and selfish). The rest of the world is now obligated to make exceptions because THEY CHOSE to let themselves be the way they are. All they'd have had to do is start taking care of their body, eat better, STOP drinking sodas (diet or otherwise), and start getting some (even low grade) exercise.

    67. Discussing the appearance of meetup attendees is off-topic (and rude).

    68. Lol, i love how you can tell most bronies came from 4chan... Anyway, i was there and had a blast. This pic was taken early and thats mostly why everyone is kind of standing around awkwardly, after an hour or so almost everyone loosened up.

    69. Personal experience:
It's damn easy to talk and rant as an Anon that it's just a "choice" to be fat.
I could go on with my own life and family examples, and yes I am actually among those who decided to lose weight and I managed, and ever since I actually feel more symphaty for those who still struggle with their weight, coz it's a damn tough fight (if you do it the healthy way).

I am ashamed of you people now. Really.

I checked the pictures, and I really don't understand all the commotion. I see normal people there.

      EVERYDAY people.

A bunch of everyday people having a good time, enjoying company, socializing.

While you others keep seeing "problems" on the picture, I see happy faces. I don't understand you.

If we want to get into the weight issue, let me tell something of my own.
It helped me a lot more to have a supportive atmosphere around me rather than people telling me I should feel bad for my condition or even straight forward telling I should be ashamed and make me feel like the scum of humanity.

Blaming won't work. Becoming fat is the result of a life-style and losing your extra weight requires you to drasticly and permanently change your lifestyle, which is not always an easy "snap n go" thing.

We are not the same. Some people can do it easily, some don't. The latter need support.

And what you do here is pointing fingers at people making them feel bad, completely ruining their good time.
Yes, that's what you are doing.

      Do you think it helps?

They go out to enjoy the company of other bronies, it gets posted like every other meetup and when they come here checking the comments they see blaming and hating.

Be so kind and think this over, please.

If someone is feeling fine in his/her body, then you won't be able to convince them to change, especially not as a random Anon over the internet.
Mocking or hating on these people will just make them feel bad and isolated, but won't change anything else.

I myself believe everything I wrote above is pretty much, well, obvious. I wasn't saying anything new or groundbreaking.
That's why I presume what I see in these comments is plain hating, or just "letting out your negative energies" on something, rather than being helpful or good willing.

My message to the bronies from the meetup:
Do not let any of these haters get to you. Don't let them make you feel bad for your condition.

I am proud of you all who broke out from the walls of anonimity and shared the magic of frinedship. You are the ones who we should thank for building this community. :)

((P.S: In case any of you decides to change his way if life - and this is a personal experience too - don't be ashamed to ask for help either. There are a lot of good willing people out there who will support you if you need it.))

@Purple Tinker: I agree. And Im terrible sorry that I can't resist answering to these comments, I'm probably putting oil on fire. Forgive me for this, I just feel the entire topic very close to me.

Think long and hard about choosing the military--There are some pretty unique and interesting opportunities to be had, but BUCKETS of bullshit to wade through on a daily. Get a few opinions.

And wow. After the craziness spouted here, I'm thinking the MLP fandom needs to hire a public relations firm to closely manage Bronies and the media. I do hope the earnest love for an adorable show is what ultimately shines through after all the rage, among us and in the eyes of the public at large.

    71. I'm not from 4chan. Also i just went to a meetup. Finally, it was difficult getting there, but i knew it would be worth it.

No one's here so I don't know why I'm writing this, here of all places. But I said all that because I really just wanted to motivate people to start taking care of their looks. Not lose yourself trying to please others, but to try to please yourself. That's the most important thing about appearances, what YOU think about it.

Say you're ugly and you look in the mirror. Is that really what you WANT? You're body's an art medium. It's like your avatar you choose so carefully to represent yourself. You gotta be productive with it and make it look how YOU want it to look!!!

And thanks for the advice on the military thing btw. I'm wondering if what I want isn't exactly military training, but more... simple exercise and gun shooting practice. Like at some shooting range.

Anyway I understand my words are more demotivating than... motivating. Also I heard chewing gum often helps.
