    Author: short skirts and explosions
Description: A horrible Cataclysm has turned all of Equestria into a Wasteland of barren ash and twilight desolation. The Sun and the Moon have been destroyed. Everypony has died--including Princesses Luna and Celestia. But one pony miraculously survives; she is a lone wanderer, the last of her kind, surrounded by menacing creatures that hate her. She navigates the Wastes in an airship and scavenges off the blighted landscape to keep herself alive.
Then one day she meets an old companion who grants her a gift, the chance to go back in time to the warm and sunny days of Ponyville, where her dead friends live in happiness. How far will the last pony venture into these joyous days of Equestria, even if she fully knows that there is no way to change the horrible fate of everypony she loves?

    3. The description sounds interesting, though I wonder for how long the sun and moon have been destroyed; without the light of the sun everything would die pretty fast, not to mention the planet being thrown about and out of its now nonexistent solar system due to the lack of a sun. (if the sun was destroyed I would assume the sun would go out like any other star would by going super nova which would scorch the whole planet) But, I think I'm putting too much thought into this, so I shall read it!

      ReplyDelete
    4. Sounds like a Steampunk Fallout. Might give this a read if I run out of fics sometime soon

      ReplyDelete
    5. Nope, the description makes it sound to depressing to bother with...

      No thanks.

      ReplyDelete
    6. Oh, didn't read the full description. Steampunk Fallout with Timetravel? How much you willing to bet that the Old companion has something to do with a certain Doctor...?
Also, I hope the GrimDark is confined to the Apocalypse land. I wouldn't want anything to happen to Cheerilee in old Ponyville

      ReplyDelete
    7. Read the description. Watery eyes. I'm not touching this because I don't feel like going to sleep while crying. Sorry :(

      ReplyDelete
    8. Sounds interesting, will read after dead space.

      ReplyDelete
    9. Is... Is this a Post Third Impact/Peggy Sue story? It is, isn't it? I mean, it's not named that, but this story is part of the two of the biggest genres in Evangelion fan fiction for the past decade and a half. Oh, I am definitely checking this out.

      ReplyDelete
    10. The author is short skirts and explosions? This fic can't be anything less than pure, concentrated awesome.

      ReplyDelete
    11. Is this finished? I don't want to jump into yet another unfinished fic.

      ReplyDelete
    12. That is by far the most depressing summary I have ever read on this site.

      ReplyDelete
    13. I had the honour of pre-reading this.

      tl;dr READ THIS.

      ReplyDelete
    14. Depressing, yes. But sounds like a kinda interesting read to me. I like the question of simply staying in the barren wasteland ruins of Equestria, or choosing to go back in time to be with your friends again, even if you know what that would mean. Tough choice. To see everyone you love and care for be destroyed.. again. But at least getting to see them again.

      ReplyDelete
    15. Listen to Grif, this is definitely something worth reading.

      ReplyDelete
    16. Yeah, I just finished the first part.
Worth the read and well written, albiet incredibly sad. Now I have to keep reading... >.>

      ReplyDelete
    17. Huh. judging by the description, this certainly sounds like it was heavily inspired by Bastion's plot. 'tis one of my all time favourite games, so I might just have to give this a read.

      ReplyDelete
    18. This is incredible storytelling! A very imaginative plot and setting.

      ReplyDelete
    19. This story is worth your time.

      I guarantee it.

      ReplyDelete
    20. hmm...
depressing description and mixed reaction comments

      ...

      *adds to reading list*

      ReplyDelete
    21. Again, as a few have already said: This is an incredible story. I saw this pop up a while ago and could not wait for it to show up here and get some VERY well deserved exposure.

Yes it's long, and MY GOD is it sad, but it is amazing and absolutely worth your time. Without a doubt, my favorite epic length pony story (although I haven't gotten around to FoE yet).

Start reading it when you're getting ready for bed. You won't get enough sleep that night, but you won't regret it.

      ReplyDelete
    22. I can envision this both as a game, and a movie.

I can probably make a Fallout mod of this.

      ReplyDelete
    23. Seriously enjoyed this so far. Looking forward to getting round to reading the rest.

Also, to anyone who was reading this at the same time as me, I was Anon 7 and Anon 109.

    24. Heh. "Harmony" That's one good foreshadowing, if you look at chapter 1 and 6.

      ReplyDelete
    25. sounds really good but iv'e read too many sad things lately so this seems to depressing for me to read at the moment...

      ReplyDelete
    26. This is pretty good even if I hope a certain tri-centerian is wrong.
Looking forward to more and for secrets to be rev-
As I write this I smack my head of the desk realising that unless something weird happens it is all pre-ordained. That is depressing. Awesome, but depressing.

      ReplyDelete
    27. How in the blue fuck does this earn a *LIGHT* Grimdark tag?

The last time I spoke out on the seemingly inane and arbitrary nature of EQD's Grimdark classification system, ppl told me "Well, it's only GRIMDARK if canon ponies are dying PERMANENTLY."

      Well....?

This story opens. With a play-by-play account. Of an EXTINCTION EVENT.

      lolwut eqd?

      ReplyDelete
    28. Woah.
This story is REALLY depressing so far. It keeps getting MORE depressing as you continue on.

I really really want to see how it ends though...although its very possible that it will end where it begins. In which case, I'll just be really sad.

      ReplyDelete
    29. This is really, really good.

      ReplyDelete
    30. Curse the mobile site not showing the incomplete tag. I now find myself wanting more after reading what I thought was the complete story.
This is good though and I urge everyone to read it.

      ReplyDelete
    31. Meh. Good descriptive writing, but takes way too long to get to the point. By halfway through chapter 3, I was getting pretty bored. I read all the way through chapter 6 anyway, but it doesn't ever really get better.

      ReplyDelete
    32. Great read so far. Sensible plot, descriptive writing, good EVERYTHING.

Bit long though, halfway through chapter 2 and I'm out of time. Will pick this up later.

      ReplyDelete
    33. "Droves of screaming pegasi fell towards the gaping maw of the burning abyss—until suddenly their airborne carcasses exploded in a hurdling wall of ash."

      "[LIGHT GRIMDARK]" LOL

      ReplyDelete
    34. This is a league better than I expected, when I first saw it. It manages to be an amazing melancholy piece of writing, with truly astounding philosophical emotion.

      I love it.

      ReplyDelete
    35. Mmmm..... No I can't read anymore of this...... Sorry dude I tried. Good writing though

      ReplyDelete
    36. Oh, yeah... did anyone else notice this? (Slight spoilers): There are twelve monkeys at the M.O.D.D., and the piece deals with a survivor of an event that wiped out the population of the planet being sent back in time. Sound familiar?

      ReplyDelete
    37. There seems to have been a lot of world building before we got to the main purpose of the story, or what seems to be. It would be a shame to waste it.

Now excuse me, I need to go read something cheerful like Project Horizons Ch 22.

      ReplyDelete
    38. Wow! incredible story! I'd compare it more to a steampunk version of The Road rather then Fallout however. Still absolutely amazing. i spent most of my evening reading it!

      ReplyDelete
    39. Absolutely superb writing. All of the backstory written before there's even a hint of time travel is brilliant and made me read every chapter in one sitting.

      ReplyDelete
    40. I've been waiting for a story like this on EqD. The only other fic I know with similar subject matter is my all time fave "Five Ponies", and unfortunately the clop scene in that means it can't be posted here. If this turns out as good as it seems it will, I may have a new fave.

      ReplyDelete
    41. I know the author of this. I've told him he should write an original novel like yesterday. He's too good for simple pony fics. This is incredible.

      ReplyDelete
    42. Not even Cupcakes made me cry this much.....

      ReplyDelete
    43. I've never cried while reading a fic before. Alternate ending or I kill myself.

      ReplyDelete
    44. I have read the first chapter and it is really good; however, I can tell that this is a fic I cannot read until I know it is complete. So I will watch out for the completion and then tell my feeling on it

      ReplyDelete
    45. Interesting.

I raved about "The Librarian" because it was "I Am Legend. With Ponies." This is pretty much the same idea except w/ steampunk, much more substance, and more faithfulness to the themes of solitude and cultural preservation. Right down to the movie's reverence for music recordings - if I was The Last Man on Earth, I can think of few treasures that would bring me more joy than salvaging a copy of say, What's Goin' On or Supreme Clientele. The journal entry about music is....simply beautiful.

So why do I kinda sympathize w/ other readers who didn't like it?

      Hm.

Perhaps its the 3rd person perspective? I wouldn't be surprised if the experience of reading hundreds and hundreds of pages of KKAT CRACK (aka Fallout Equestria) has given Grimdark readers a Pavlovian expectation for 1st person narrative in Post-Apocalypse/After The End fics.

Or perhaps its the bizarre, esoteric voice activation magic?

Maybe its Dash dying trying to save some fucking OC pony we don't know and love lol.

In any case, once you adjust to it, there's some seriously cool shit to be found:

-The Pheonix hunt (validating Eyes of Another Pony's observations said about the deadliness of those damned immortal birds)

      - Dirigible Dogs!

      - implied Gilda badassness

      - a Chekhov's Jar that explodes in a Crowning Moment of Awesome

-"Should have just named yourselves 'Dead Dogs'...”

^^^ - all that needs is sunglasses and The Who lol

-Aristrotle & Neightszche. Oh horse puns, will you ever get old?

-Dead unicorn horns as magical equipment - very cool and I'm SHOCKED no-one else has done this. It also doubles as a stealth Cupcakes reference! :D

-Fuck Equestria's Veganism, holla. Gotta survive, word to Arbu lol. Shit, she even says "BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY". *throws up Black Power hoof*

      - And after all this lovely worldbuilding, she goes back in time? Wow, that sounds like it'll either be brilliant or derail the whole shebang. Can't wait to find out.

This fic grew on me ALOT. Give it a chance, ponies!

      ReplyDelete
    46. @DPV111

A clop *scene* means it can't be posted huh?

      LOL.

Yet Seth posted Fallout: Equestria Chapter 20.5. Called it "borderline clopfic". LOL. Borderline. Nevermind the double-sided dildo action. Right. Borderline.

      ReplyDelete
    47. @mycutiemarkisagun
*SPOILER* It's not an OC pony. But that isn't revealed until chapter 5. And I won't tell. */END SPOILER*

      ReplyDelete
    48. Damn right it isn't an OC pony. Read again!

      ReplyDelete
    49. I will third the statement this story contains no OC ponies, and say that I guessed who she was quite early on in the story.

My speculation about how things will end without the story will end without being hopeless is that if a goddess of law is preventing time form being mutable a god of chaos might be able to change things. And conveniently Cheerilee and her class will be paying a visit to where one is sealed up

    51. Absolutely an excellent story. Took one of my least favorite canon ponies and actually made me care about her, thanks to such superb writing. Definitely looking forward to more of this, and seeing how it is all resolved.

      ReplyDelete
    52. I like the way the ending of 6 loops back to the beginning, and hate how I need the next part now, dammit!

      ReplyDelete
    53. This grew on me so much. I liked the world, but I started to get a little down with the (very well done) unrelenting grimness midway through chapter three. I'm very very glad I stuck with it.

I will state that while I'm not holding out for a everything works out forever ending, I'm at least hoping for a ray of hope here :D
Something like the return of the Sun and Moon may return their living avatars as well.

      ReplyDelete
    54. I also have to agree with an earlier comment... [Light Grimdark] doesn't really apply here. This is only slightly less grimdark than 40k, for celestia's sake.

      ReplyDelete
    55. Can't say that I was to enamored with the lead, even if it is easily guessable with a slight bit of thought. Yet, never one to hold it against a story I gave this one a try and suddenly I find myself caring. Wanting to read of her next experience, her next thought. Well written, thought provoking, and I eagerly await the next chapters. Or else....

      ReplyDelete
    56. This rendition of Scoots is just marvelous.

      ReplyDelete
    57. I stared to tear up at just the premise. No way am I reading the full thing.

      ReplyDelete
    58. @mycutiemarkisagun
It's very explicit, selfcest, involves a foal... And the author refuses to edit it at all to bring it to "borderline" status like Butterscotch and others do to get their stories approved here.

Of course personally I prefer sex to Grimdark violence (Murder/torture/rape. Horror Grimdark or action oriented violence I have no problem with), but the laws of the land say that you can graphically describe filly Rainbow Dash's wings being fed into a wood chipper while still attached, but give her an orgasm and you can go to jail/hell/f*ck yourself.

      ReplyDelete
    59. Brilliant so far. The beginning was a bit of a struggle (lots of stuff all at once with not a lot of information) BUT it soon smoothed out, into an absolutely gripping read. Loved the way that she finally manages to travel back to ponyville. Can honestly say that I had no clue what to expect right up until it happened.
All in all, excellent. I shall be watching for updates with interest

      ReplyDelete
    60. Darn you, I'm torn! I read the first chapter, and I gotta say: first of all there is some excellent world building, and I really like what the author's done so far.

However, killing off all but one pony is so...depressing. Before I can continue reading anything this sad, I gotta know if there's gonna be some form of a happy ending.

      ReplyDelete
    61. Dark. Very Dark . Awesome read though ,saw the two chars in it coming however but then again there is only so many to choose from with the descriptions given. Though taking a pony I really did not even care about from the show and making them into this .
i am greatly impressed particularly in chapter 6 where other rumors of her back story are brought up. though will that scene be changed if cannon proves otherwise?
The questions remain however . And I do look forward to finding the answers.
Though i can see two ways of ending this . the expected Bittersweet. or the alternete relems method . Which in all honesty would likely change the tone too much for it to fit.

      ReplyDelete
    62. wow i must say i'm impressed, there where only a few other fan-fics that really bound me like this one. i cant wait for the next chapter, especially to find out how this all resolves and if equestria is really doomed forever.

      ReplyDelete
    63. I love this. I haven't been this enthralled since past sins.

      ReplyDelete
    64. I do hope that the one who knows about time (trying not to spoil anything here :P) is utterly, utterly wrong. Partly due to the fact that the whole "Unavoidable consequences" future thing makes little sense when you really sit down and think about it (Wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey.
But mainly because Twilight's dead sadface.jpeg

One small criticism. Scootaloo remains relatively unfazed as she discovers the corpse of her childhood friend, even though she died desperately huddling to her older sister and Grandmother,as her big brother died outside the door trying to save them. But she breaks down and cries when she finds her Scooter five mins later? That's the only part so far that I've had a problem with

      ReplyDelete
    65. I really liked this fic, it goes deep. Great world you built. I hope to see more :)

      ReplyDelete
    66. I'm really enjoying this fic but if it comes full circle like I suspect it to... I'm gonna hate myself. I feel like I've already read the ending.

      -=Spoilers=-

As far as something genuinely interesting; I'm curious as to how you've arranged time in this. At first I assumed that it was one path. Then I realized things were being altered but "major events could not be avoided". Then, you blindsided me with looping events and I decided I had no idea what you were going for.
As it seems, the latest interpretation of time makes it similar to the above, "wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey" nonsense. However this only works if you don't define time by any exact rules... which spike has already done. I recommend revisiting and really thinking about how your interpretation of time works rather than just what you want to accomplish with it.

I particularly enjoy how Scootaloo's changes have been extreme and nonexistant at the same time. At her core she's still the same pony but life has taught her things that cannot be easily unlearned. To be honest I expected more out of her when encountering the Apple family though. With her reaction to Ponyville and all those she barely knew, seeing Apple/Bloom should have at least illicited a tear or two.
If your intention was she bottled it up until she got to the clubhouse then I think you should have better portrayed that.

As for things I'm looking forward to; Seeing the events transpire as the Mane 6 live it out in the past. Especially since... somepony had known as dictated by Rainbow Dash.
I also kinda hope Gilda has RD like preserved somewhere cause she still has a soft spot for her. This has the added benefit of Gilda-
Which brings me to my other point! I'd like to see more about Scoot's relationships and the post destruction culture. Specifically Gilda shines as prime conflict material at any time; last pony and griffin who liked ponies once upon a time.

I hope this is actually read by the author and is found helpful or interesting as well. Till next chapter! :3

      ReplyDelete
    67. I am really enjoying this fic! It's depressing, sad, and really rather...hopeless. But somehow you manage to maintain a sense of hope after a certain point!

It's original, it's intelligent, it's creative. I kind of can guess how it ends (not hiding it very well, especially after the end of chapter 5), but that isn't affecting the story in a negative way.

Please, keep it up! I'm looking forward to reading more.

      ReplyDelete
    68. I would pay money to get this as a book. In paperback or hardback, I don't care, I would pay real money, as in cash, to the author, and i'd like spending this money.

This guy definitely does not have enough fame!

      ReplyDelete
    69. This fic reminds me of this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2keWeSgDY8

If you haven't heard it, sit back, close your eyes, and imagine this story in your head. It's beautiful

      ReplyDelete
    70. Oh no...

This isn't going to end well...

Excellently written. I loved chapter 2, how it was essentially a journal entry just interspersed with daily wasteland life. You made me feel for the as of yet unnamed last pony and nearly brought a tear to my eye several times.

The first trip back in time, the one for only a few secconds, made me cry. It was so beautiful. And in them most recent chapter with her scooter. *sob*

Everypony sees where this is going, but as long as you do it as beautifully as you have so far, it's going to be worth it, and will cause many a manly tear.

5/5 Keep up the good work.

      ReplyDelete
    71. I want this book. Just so I can have it in the hard copy.

Amazing writing style, gripping plot, suspense, great characterization...

What more could you ask for?

Its so sad that everypony knows the full circle in the end, but that even after the end of the world, the sole survivor of a dead race tries to figure out why.

      Kudos to you, writer.

      5/5.

      ReplyDelete
    72. Wait... wait... wait... wait.
I'm guessing that Harmony is Scootaloo, or something like that, right...?

Chapter six awaits, and I can't wait to read it, but I have to say somethings first.

First, the writing style. The level of description, the detail put into the word choice and diction is beyond amazing, outright unbelievable. And yet, it still flows with amazing pace and keeps the reader entertained.

The characters are all extremely well done, and you expand fantastically on the original characters themselves as well.

Everything about this piece just shocks me. It is so well crafted.... Even if we know it ends in death and misery (which kinda bummed me out, but well, that's time for you!) I still can't wait to read the next few chapters.

      I love this.
5/5, anything else is an insult to this work.

      ReplyDelete
    73. 'SPOILERS'. Hold on, Scootaloo is Harmony? That is so awesome! Giant self-fulfilling time thingy, GO!!!

      ReplyDelete
    74. I don't think you ponies are looking full circle enough.

Scootaloo is going to cause the cataclysm. It's a classic example of time travel. Someone goes back in time to try and change something, but instead actually causes that thing to happen.

Short Skirts, you are going to have to be absolutely brilliant to make the means justify this end (and so far, you have been), but if I'm not openly bawling by the end of this, you have failed.

      ReplyDelete
    75. I absolutely love how everyone is expecting, even encouraging a sad and tragic end.
You realize most stories begin with a tragedy and end with a climax, right?
Well writers like Spider Robinson reverse that sometimes...
I don't mind really if this does come full circle but there's no need to think it has to work only 1 way:
Self fulfilling prophecy (Harmony causes it)
repetitive progressive time loop (try and try again like the Dark Tower ending)
outcome with hope for the future (enough survivors to rebuild)
quantum parallel dimensional generation (Harmony's world stays but an alternate one is created without the same events. DBZ did this for the Cell saga)
time stream reboot/rewrite (Back to the Future / Five Ponies style)
These could all work and still have extreme emotional impact. After all most of the emotion is truly in the writing, not the plot.
After all, more happy and bittersweet endings have made me "baww" (Five Ponies again) than an ending that is dark for the sake of dark.

      ReplyDelete
    76. This story is unbelievably good. I actually had to take breaks just because it was so intense. That NEVER happens. The quality is astounding, and the pacing is perefected in a way I would never have thought possible for such a fic. You manage to make wandering a wasteland for 5 huge chapters and develop chararchter, backstory and plot in just the right measure. All the while I was wondering who Harmony was, and then BAM. I am so incredibly happy that this isn't over. Thank you.

      ReplyDelete
    77. Absolutely amazing, I am absolutely speechless at how u added mild suspense every once in a while to keep me reading the whole series in about 4 hours, this looks incredibly professional and this should be rated 6 stars... Their one problem though, ponies will never end XD jk

      ReplyDelete
    78. This story, it actually made me tear up... It's amazing! The last time I cried while reading was when I read Harry Potter, honestly!

till, this doesn't look like it will end well. Please, tell me that the Cataclysm wont happen! I hate it! I want everypony to be alive and happy. Just hoping that it doesn't end the way I think it will end.

    89. Until the latest three chapters I've loved this but now the recent additions to this story are, quite frankly, boring. Nothing happens. It's just descriptive and self-repeating.

"Give to the earth" and "to touch the ground" could have been condensed into one chapter and cut down on the drama and chatter about inner turmoil.

It's still good text, yes, but it's boring and I find myself skipping many paragraphs just because eyeing it briefly already shows me it's more of the same.

If the author moved the story a bit quicker, it would get my full respect but I'll just have to force myself to read on to the very latest part. Because I want to know what happens / happened.

Just a bit faster please :(

      ReplyDelete
    93. Others have been complaining about this fic being too slow, but I like that. It's a welcome break from all these fics where suddenly, two mares confess their ancient love for each other in the space of 10 mins, or where a quick spell changes the world drastically, and they have to change it back BEFORE TIME RUNS OUT or something.
And @TT I reckon it'll be bittersweet probably. Maybe not happy, but the kind of ending that brings Manly Tears of Sadness AND Joy to many a brony

      ReplyDelete
    94. @ Spell

Well, I'll have to wait until it's finished. I can't stand sad endings, but bittersweet ones are fine depending on how they go.

      ReplyDelete
    95. The pacing is fine as is, and I for one like the fact that a story is both well thought out and paced as opposed to the rushed hyperactivity usually found in fanfiction. As to not reading it unless you know the ending or unless it becomes a action movie? You people have probably never read a good book properly before in your lives have you? There is more to a good story than inexplicable character changes and instant conflict resolution. And what use is there in reading a story from the ending first?

      ReplyDelete
    96. @ Shoggoth

Oh geez. Notsureiftroll. Look buddy, I don't like unhappy endings. I've had enough of a crappy life to deal with sadness in a story. It's not what I'm looking for when I read, unless it's a horror story. I don't want to know HOW it ends, I just want to know if it ends well.

      ReplyDelete
    97. @TT

I feel the same. I don't really hate stories with dark themes. I just want to know what I'm getting myself into.
I read Cupcakes and all the related stories knowing full well what would happen and how it would make me feel. I do not resent them for it.

Other stories I have read were going along fine, with action/adventure levels of violence when suddenly "OMG Twilight, watch out for tentacle!" or "OMG Rainbow Dash is being raped!" or "HOLY Crap a giant snake is killing everyone!".
See, nasty surprises I DO resent.

      ReplyDelete
    98. I must say, this story for me is ranking up there with fallout equestria and project horizon. Very fine work. Looking toward to more. Tho, I have to wonder. Is it her traveling back in time that is causes the end? Hmm...time travel. Y u so wonkie?

    108. Well. After reading until the end of the tenth chapter, I'm completely emotionally exhausted. This fic is amazing. I've read a metric shit-ton of fic in my time from many different fandoms and across several different genres, but...I think I'm being completely honest here when I say that this is the best one I've ever read. The writing, the characterisations, the plot, the use of description, the world building...it's all absolutely superb. Six stars, easily.

the thing thats killing me most with anticapation is all the hints or rainbow dash..... almost as if she will have huge roll in the end of the story.........as in she may not be dead or something along those lines.... biggest reason for thinking that is several times its mention at how friggen insanely awesome she was and would have been......
maybe not it could be just because were dealing with......oops cant give away name ;).....that i have the assumption!!! and i hope thats the case.....if not its still epicly written story!

      ReplyDelete
    118. This is a fantastic story!
I felt rather melancholic while reading the first few chapters. I might go as far to say that I was kind of depressed due-in-part to them, among other things going on in my life, though I absolutely craved more after I finished those chapters. I was very excited to see chapters 7, 8, 9 and 10 get posted, though I was a little worried that I'd get sad over reading them. I just finished reading these newer chapters, and I thought they were great. There might even be a little bit of hope in the main-character by the end.
I hadn't realized how long the story was getting till I found my self staying awake for something like 6 hours reading a few chapters the other day. After I rendered it as a PDF, I was surprised to see just how many pages there are. That's great though, since over all these pages, there is tons of steady development, sections that can really make you reflect on life, action, melancholy, and even a little humor here and there.
It sort of reminds me of how I felt while playing Mother 3, though it's far more intense here. This story takes something that is extremely colorful, happy and dear to me, and thrusts an unsuspecting character into a terrible monochromatic post-cataclysm world, only to tug her back for reasons that are not clear yet. Regardless, it's written very well, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. The pacing is great, and the story very well though out, and well developed so far.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to more! No need to rush though, quality over speediness!

    121. I don't know why I haven't commented on this one yet. This is easily one of my favorite fanfics I've read. This thing is freaking amazing. It's brought out parts of me I haven't seen in years. I used to always imagine continuations of stories when I was a little kid, and I haven't done that in forever. This story has had me imagine like five different endings already. I LOVE the way you're portraying time travel, and it works almost exactly how I would do it. I think your mind works much like mine when it comes to these sorts of things. My favorite part of this story by far is the vein of hope that's still shining through it. The hope that even if Equestria is still dead for eternity, at least the main character will get some closure. When I read the end of chapter 6 (A couple days after the initial posting), I laughed my head off at how I'd missed it up until that point. It was a great twist that really crushes your hope but still makes you fall in love with the story. Some people say it's too slow, I say to them learn to read faster. I'm a very fast reader and have probably read the whole thing over the course of 3-6 hours (I'm not sure). I read relatively long books in five hours and mangas in 30 minutes, so that's saying something. I see potential for this story to become incredibly long and epic, a section or four chapters for each of the mane 6 anyone? No matter what happens, I await eagerly the next chapters. I got home from a really long and tiring road trip last night at 1 AM and saw that this story had new chapters. I put aside my exhaustion to read as many chapters as I could before my iPod's battery died. Then I read the rest this morning before doing anything else. Obviously this is a good story. KEEP IT UP!

      ReplyDelete
    122. After reviewing a lot of the comment, I almost feel guilty about not reading this...

      Almost, but not quite ;-)

I'm sure it's a great story and I like the premise, but my experience with stories with [sad] tags and "end-of-the-world" scenarios has been... traumatic. Some of the stuff on here is so well-written and poignant that I just felt like curling up in a ball and crying my eyes out. And dragons don't cry easily (unless we're faking).

So, I'm sorry, but I can't read this. I've sworn off depression-inducing sadness for a while.

    123. Overall, this was one of the most emotional, climactic, breath-taking, heart-warming, fast-paced, and thought out stories I've ever read. Even though a story is about ponies, and you're a guy, it can still make you cry. 11/10

      ReplyDelete
    124. Indeed, oh my god, I can't, cannot wait for more. I just read this fic, I've no idea however what is the regular timelength inbetween chapter releases. A week? Two weeks? I just now, in the latest update, began reading this -amazing- fanfiction. Started at 2 o'clock in the morning, didn't stop till I finished everything at 8' o clock. Though, because it was so late, I skimmed most of the first chapter, I felt it was kind of far too descriptive and a bit boring, but it's because, I suppose, it was 2-3 in the morning. I'll try out tomorrow afternoon!

This is now my #2 fanfic ever. This is just incredible. You are incredibly good at portraying emotions. Your descriptions are just long enough and just deep enough that the feelings of the main character are felt, but it doesn't ruin the flow of the story.

      Brilliant. This deserves a 6-star.

    133. I generally find myself intrigued by and obsessed with apocalypse stories. To be honest, I have wanted to read a story like this the entirety of my life. I never expected to find it in fan fiction, let alone MLP, but this fandom has surprised me time and time again. And while this is still the story I've always wanted to read, all of the characters are in my opinion IC. They've made me laugh, and they've made me cry, and all I can say is a resounding yes.

There's a name I didn't think I'd see again. Certainly has his penchant for being long-winded; this thing is up to 240k words and isn't anywhere near being done.

      *several minutes later*

A short bit of poking around ff.net turns up that Lord Belgarion, one of Post's biggest fans/collaborators, has a "Short Skirts and Explosions" in his favorite authors, and that account has http://www.fanfiction.net/~spaceisawaste listed as a homepage. Skirt's FiMFiction bio also reads simply "space is a waste".

SS&E's posts in Vimbert's review thread over on ponychan are also reminiscent of the endlessly self-deprecating style that Post always employed.

So yeah, I think we've got positive identification here.

Can't wait for more in the future!

      ReplyDelete
    148. Hmm. i've been reading this for some time now, but I can't seem to get through these newest chapters.

Part of it is the insane overuse of italics. Emphasis must be done sparingly, or it ceases to be emphasis. But that's not new to these chapters, by any means.

What is new is Fluttershy. The problem is that she sounds like EoP's Spike. I can readily accept that a dragon, cut off from other intelligent life and spending hundreds of years trying to reason out what has happened, might adopt the sort of vocabulary he uses. But it's... really not how Fluttershy would speak, especially if there isn't much gap between canon and her parts of this fic.

For instance. “I have searched all over the eastern stretches of Everfree that were detailed in the reconnaissance, Captain Redgale.” To me, this sounds more like something Twilight Sparkle - or, more likely, the G1 pegasus Wind Whistler - would say, as opposed to the simple, withdrawn Fluttershy I know and love.

Damn it, something I forgot to berate Skirts on? GAHHH.

I don't think the OoC problem is quite that severe, but I'll keep a sharper eye out for this in the future.

I fully agree with you over italics, but at the same time, frequent emphasis seems to be part of Skirts' style. To some degree, I like it; I'm reminded of a comic book, where the most important words are emphasized liberally. I do try to rein things in when critical, powerful moments fall flat just because everything else is emphasized too much, but for the most part I try not to muck around in style too much. One of my weaknesses as a reviewer/pre-reader/whatever dirty names they're calling me this week, perhaps.

    150. Oh gosh, this story finally made tears come to my eyes!! Ditzy's speech about Dinky and how she came to become pregnant with her, I found it hard to read it all cause of the tears!! And now, the end of the last chapter, Scootalo finally calming down and showing the orphan Ursa Major kindness! I have always loved that lullaby, and it certainly fits the end of that chapter. I so look forward to see who Scootalo will be anchoring herself too next! 2 down, 4 more to go! Though I get the feeling Rainbow Dash will probably be last...

    156. "I was thrown into a CALIDA-SCOPE of emotion in the perilous chapter 4. I was reminded that memories of the heart are too important to forget. The sheer terror of the trolls coming in waves to destroy the final legacy of EQUESTRIA, kept me mercilessly at the edge of my chair. My heart violently raced "faster than the speed of sound" as word after word clawed into my mind like a bastard swords blade. I could not remember a time when I was in such thrills since the dark stories _CUPCAKES_, _FLIGHT OF INSANITY_, and of course the soul scaring chapters of _PAST SINS_. My body shook violently in adrenalin and shock as my mind poured into a massive BLACK CALDRON as SCOOTALOO readied herself for her last stand, CELESTIAS iron horn in hoof and a proud stance ready to fight to her only bleeding breath. Seeing SCOOTALOO in my mind, her face in full rage as her body, BLOODY and tattered. Armor torn asunder, body battered and scared from the chaotic battle took a toll on my heart. THEN...after I felt this was her last with being sucked into where I AM in the story. I saw the mighty purple dragon decimating the shrinking circle of the fleshwall of trolls. I could not fathom who or what could this dragon be. The only thing i had in mind was the event of what was to come of this lucky or unfortunate heroin. I felt as if I ran along side SCOOTALOO in panicky pants till her demise was the tomb of the once "SUGARCUBE CORNER". The event hurled me into into a nightmarish horror-flash. I felt My heart skip a beat from the distant memory of the deep depth of SCOOTALOO'S heart, then after it burst into a green inferno I snapped into my senses of only one purple scald dragon.

The tender moment shook me down like a earthquake of no discontinue. My heart broke into a wave of blissful sorrow as SCOOTALOO finally had her one and only reunion with an old friend "SPIKE", three lonely tears following the sorrowful yet touching event that took place. I respectfully award chapter 4 with a 5.5 star.

I shall continue my words in my next critic for Chapter 5."

    160. First off. Love this story. So original and full of horror, happiness, excitement, chills, and just so much more. I love it.

      That said however....

Just felt the last few chapters seemed to drag a bit. Specially once they all went into the forest. They are in this rush, but seem to stop every bit to argue over things. Felt dragged out really.

That is my only real gripe for this story. And it's hardly going to keep me from reading on. Or from giving this the highest rating I can. Just a minor thing I figured id mention since I see most writers want to know this stuff.

i really do love the story but find the lack of a scedual or even any interaction with fans alittle desterbing

    162. Wow. Just finished reading through it all, and that's about all I can manage.

As I read through this there were certain pieces of the writing that I literally stopped to comment on.

The substance itself is amazing. Unseen set-ups are followed up with grand pay-offs that succeed in plucking every heart-string and striking every chord with unmatched precision.

Definitely the best story I have read so far.

    163. @Jonathan There's not much interaction here, but it's mostly on the Ponychan thread. the URL for it is here: http://www.ponychan.net/chan/fic/res/58801.html
SS&E posts somewhat regularly in response to fan stuff, though it's mostly chapter updates for pre-readers and stuff. Check it out.

      Greetings, marsupials.

Just to let everyone know, I have been working quite earnestly on the latest arc of this story.  It is a rather long segment, so far exceeding 280 pages and quite likely to be over 450 pages when it is done.  If everything goes according to the best laid plans, I might have chapters 16 - 23 finished and updated by mid December.  If everything does not go according to plan... well... there's always Pokey the Penguin.

Bloody amazing story. This is definitely among my favourites, together with Fallout: Equestria (I guess I'm a sucker for postapoc adventure with heart wrenching plots :p).

One thing that bothers me is how Spike says time travel can't affect the time line, and yet Scootaloo apparently only uses the name Harmony because she heard it from RD... who heard it BECAUSE time travelling Scootaloo used it. The name has its very origin in time travel, without any starting point, and that's either a plot hole or something with very very scary implications. I do hope that gets solved somehow.

Small note: you might generate a LOT more interest with separate chapter releases. Just saying. People tend to get interested in stories when they keep seeing them pop up on the EqD story update posts.

He writes them from what I understood in one mass, sends them to friends for review in one mass, and posts them as one mass. He seems to post them arc-by-arc (i.e., the whole of Applejack arc, the whole of Fluttershy arc, etc.)

Chapters end at very odd points, so he probably doesn't want a whole update just about Harmony preparing to go time traveling again, or about how she met Fluttershy. Etc.

At least that's what I believe. As much as I'd love to see them come out as fast as possible, he seems to prefer to finish the entire arc (or most of it), and only then send it for review or the such after he made edits himself. Overall, I think this is the cleanest, most orderly way possible.

    167. I frikkin' hate grimdark stories. I particularly hate the thought of anything approaching grim or dark happening to any of the pretty pastel ponies...

...but this works for me. Dunno why.

I noticed that as well, tho I wonder if she took the name because of what Rainbow Dash said, I don't think she did.

Also, you point out something indirectly that has been bouncing around inside my head.

What if sending her back in time is what causes the apocalypse to happen in the first place?

And as for updates, yes, slow. But I can wait, I believe it's true how he's doing the updates. A whole arc at a time.

This has been a good story thus far, minus my earlier minor compliant. I look froward to more.

I just found this story yesterday, and it is amazing! I love it, it's my favorite fanfic I have ever read, quite possibly one of the best stories period. I'm not even through the Applejack arc yet, but I glanced through the comments to see if anything was posted about a release date for the next update. I'm glad to hear that one will be coming soon, and it sounds like it's going to be frightfully long. I wish you luck in your daunting task! Now I shall go back to reading so I can be ready when the update hits!

    170. I've been reading the things that ponies have been saying about this one, and I can't understand any negative statements. ;___;
      I love this.
I want this to be a real book so I can bring it with me everywhere.

    172. "Chapter five was a dragging, and yet teamed gratefully suspense. The last three pages held me to my seat and rattled my cinematic view on the story, "will it happen? Will SCOOTALOO really get to be sent back in time to have her one chance to see what she can and even have the chance to dare dream of a brighter future for the EQUESTRIA she once lived on, and if not, hold on to dear life of hope? Will she be able to save the lives of the past to better the future?" I can only find out with the chapters awaiting me. My body shook with anticipation as Spike offered the "Oneway ticket to the day or days before the "BLIGHT" the split the world into the broken and forever decaying demise as she is still "THE END OF PONIES". This I swear, I will remain vigilant to every word I read till I reach the final chapter to this saga of this "Heart Pounding" tale. I shall give further word on my next critic after chapter six."

    173. Checking back every day to see if there are updates :)

Great story so far, made it to my top 3, with the other 2 being Dangerous Business and Past Sins.

    174. I was skeptical about this fic. These types of stories are not the usual type of genre I read simply because they leave a heavy heart and nothing more. I usually trust my instincts on what to avoid and what not to avoid.

And I'm glad I refused it for the first few times in my life. This story does what every reader should experience every time they pick up a book. It should enrapture you, pull you in, recreate what's happening in your thoughts, tug at your heart and tear it to pieces...and then stitch it back up together with care and love.

This story is truly gem-worthy, even if I still don't like the idea of ponies ever being completely wiped out like that.

    175. Short Skirts, Y U NO Update? Why do U torment us like that?

      ReplyDelete
    176. Holy carp, that update is even more giganormous than the Fluttershy one :|

Dammit, I was looking forward to spending time with the family during the Christmas holidays. Now I'll just be reading pony -_-

    177. Oh, also, if you think the early chapters were good, this next set is just incredible. It is the only story that I've read in years that has touched my heart to such a degree that I cried on at least two occasions, and laughed countless times.

    178. 6 STARS is needed!
yes this arc is huuuuuuge! it basically doubles the story in length!!! EOP is on the fast track to catching and surpassing fallout in length!

    179. Buck yes, another major update! Man, this and the PH Brony meetup just made my Christmas.

Thank You, Skirts, Your'e god now!

    181. This isn't a Star-6 fic anymore.

      I declare it a Star-7. It's just so good.

    182. ... Too big. WAY too big. Your arcs are getting longer, I fear what's going to happen for the last arc (which I'm guessing will be RD)

Oh yeah, are those pictures of "Harmony" new? Because she looks HOT

    183. As soon as I can take a break from my busy schedule of drinking and... drinking, I'm going to read these revised chapters.

    184. ... i gave it a try, i guess my english vocabulary is too basic to understand what is going on... these words... i'm getting tired of google translate.

    185. I spent half a minute staring at the update post's title image, then another half a minute staring at the list of new chapters. Skyrim shall be postponed. Just as about any other activity actually.

    186. I'm trying awfully hard to come up with something clever to say here, but I've got nothing. I'm physically incapable of doing anything but gush about this story right now. It's amazing. It's incredible. It's brilliant. It's a hundred thousand other words that do equally little to describe what it really is.

      It's powerful. It's... GOOD.

Take it from the worst, this right here is the best.
