• Letters to Celestia, Volume 1

We don't have an editor here at Equestria Daily, so I guess that means everypony's favorite sun princess is in charge of listening to our reports on the Magic of Friendship. I'm testing out a new segment here. This is either going to be the first of many such letters, or it'll just fade away as the result of some quirky experiment. Either way, find one pony's thoughts on what it means to be a pony fan after the break.

    Dear Princess Celestia,

I've been thinking a lot lately about all of us, your faithful subjects, and how we fit into the world around us. Almost every day, somepony will approach me asking what we can do about how I think we come across to the world outside of Equestria. What if they say mean things and try to hurt us? It's a problem weighing on a lot of minds, especially worrying about being mislabeled as 'freaks' and being persecuted. I know they mean well, but I think sometimes these fears can be misguided.

Can I tell you a secret, Princess? I don't think people think about us very often. There's so much going on in the world that it's difficult to find time to think about Equestria unless you're living right in the heart of it. Isn't that how it always goes? The problems that matter most are the ones closest to you. But when you project those fears onto the shadows beyond that sphere, you aren't helping anypony out. Knowing when to be afraid is a very important part of a healthy life, but all too often becoming consumed by your fears is a great way to create a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Sometimes ponies do things, and we don't understand why. Sometimes it's weird or creepy to us that they like the stuff that we do. And that's ok. What a pony does with her time is her business, and even if we don't appreciate it all we don't need to condemn it. Part of being friends means accepting others for being different, and not letting those differences tear us apart. When we're all free to be ourselves, we are happiest as a group.

The unfortunate thing is that part of that freedom means that some ponies will be doing things that others do not. And that's where the fear comes from, I think. There's a worry that somebody will see somepony, and think that what they see applies to everypony. And I understand that concern, I really do, but I think that our problems always seem bigger than they are because we're so close to them. It's only when we take a step back that we see how small they really are. That outsiders, even farther away from our problems than that, can barely even muster up the energy to shrug their shoulders.

What I've learned is that friendship is just like life. It isn't about conformity, it's about adaptability. When you try to push your views on others, lots of ponies get hurt. And as long as you keep your head held high and conduct yourself with grace, everything will work out ok for you. It's kind of like that time I found that broken cookie jar and apologized for it. I got put in time out, because I was taking responsibility for things outside of my control. If I had just been honest instead of panicking, nothing bad would have happened.

Equestria is growing bigger all the time, as more and more people around the world fall in love with Twilight Sparkle and her friends. What they see when they come here will be a bunch of happy ponies. And I know, that if we each do our part to represent ourselves well, then we'll all shine as a group.

    Your Other Faithful Student,

    Phoe

    6. I likie this idea! Could be a fun read.

Also the letter, brings out a good few point's that I think have been circling around this community for a while now. And hopefully will make a lot of ponies think about how they act with people inside and out of our community. I know I will.

Is it going to be different ED admins every time, or just Phoe, or members of the community too?

    10. A very, very nice letter, Phoe. I enjoyed reading through it, and it expresses things that a lot of us seem to fear.

So, well, it's pretty cool. I don't have a ton to say at this moment, it kinda has me tearing up. Yeah.

    11. That was a good read. I would like to see more.

      Keep it up Phoe!

    12. And the first of what will likely be many "stop hyperventilating about [insert thing you think will give the fandom a bad name]" articles appears.

Shame it even needs to be said but for some inexplicable reason every fandom goes through this.

    14. Interesting and thoughtful. I guess the only thing I'm confused about is idea behind this. Is this supposed to be a way for our blog ponies to write the equivalent of newspaper editorials and share some thoughts ideas with us all in an entertaining fashion? Or is this something that will be open to everypony, with a person reading through the submissions?

Also, I want to state right now that I do not see this as a 'Holier Than Thou' offering. Others though? Even beyond the parasprites that such well intentioned offerings always seem to attract, there are also bound to be people who are, for one reason or another, honestly offended by the thought they have to be 'reminded' about certain things. Not that I'm saying this as a reason that these letters should stop, but more of a (most likely unneeded) caution to be prepared for such outcries.

Nice letter, Phoe. I was thinking about this the other day, and I wonder if some of the passion behind the fandom is based around how coming out and admitting you like My Little Pony is sort of a courageous thing to do? At least compared to saying you like pretty much any show.

I've told people about it, mentioned it on twitter, facebook etc, even worn a coat with a Fluttershy badge on it to work multiple times, so it's not something I hide, but it's still cool to have somewhere like Equestria Daily, to chat ponies with other people who are into it.

      ReplyDelete
    18. This is a neat little experiment. The problem I see is this: will it only be the same three blog ponies taking turns or will it be a free forum to any who offer a letter up?

Either way it could be entertaining, but the later could make this REALLY cool. It would require a few rules for the submission, but it could be a good thing.

      ReplyDelete
    19. Brava, Phoe. That was wonderful. If all of these are of the same quality, I'd love to see them crop up on a regular basis.

    20. This is good, and definitely brings a point to this instead of random rambling like i was expecting. I would actually like to see more like this ^-^

    21. Well said Phoe! I know we as a group are often looked at either awkwardly or with discrimination. There are a good bunch of us too that basically "fight back" per-say by loving and tolerating those people. And then there's also a good bunch that simply hide their love for the show from most - if not all - of the people they know. But what makes us a great community isn't necessarily how creative most of us are, or how big we've gotten. It's that this community is based around - if only indirectly - friendship and caring. True there are a lot of people who don't always follow by that, but a lot of us do. Take the artist training grounds, day 25. You of all people should know how many of us responded to that call to action to show our support for MadMax... Even outside of the training grounds too. Would you find another community (especially just a fanbase community) where that would happen? Where it's not just a select few that are willing to show they care, but instead almost the entire community does? I think you'd be hard-pressed to do so! But I'm getting too far into this, especially for a comment (I feel the need to write a letter like this now! Make it an event or something! This could be a fun event or what not!).

      ReplyDelete
    22. @Anonymous

I really like the idea of opening up the segment to letters sent in by the community, as well.

My intention with this is to entertain and to hopefully make ponies think a little bit about this or that subject. I'll release at least one more of these in the coming days (on a totally different subject) to give everypony something of a template to work with, and then I'll start trying to carve out a regular time slot and figure out the best way to highlight everything once it all opens up.

I'd like to see all sorts of things sent to Celestia: thoughts, lessons, wishes... the list goes on.

      ReplyDelete
    23. Good read, I think everypony should take this to heart.

Btw you forgot to replace 'somebody' with 'somepony' in the fourth paragraph. :P

In passing, not sure if anyone checked back on that Slate article, but the comments on that ended up being pretty accepting.

I was one of the first people to comment, and at first I wasn't sure how it was going to go, because the first few commenters didn't really believe it was a real thing, and someone compared it to cross-dressing. In a nice way, but still.

But most of the other comments were more "yeah, I can see how this could be good", and it worked out pretty okay, given it's an older, more politics and culture-type readership.

    30. Dear Princess Celestia,

Why is is that I can never look at the comments of any post on Equestria Daily without seeing an obnoxious "First!" sitting there, being useless and not contributing to a discussion? It just confounds me.

      Your Faithful Follower,
      Neon Noble

In all seriousness, though, I like the concept of this. I like how this first (and possibly last) letter emphasized fans being different in their own ways, some of which are approved of and others looked down upon by other fans. In the end, we really should just accept the differences and move on. =3

Please stop being mean to Luna. She already appoligised for what she did a thousand years ago and spent those thousand years grounded, alone, away from everypony and her nights.

Don't you think you could be nicer to the sister you haven't seen in a millennia? I'm sure she misses you and spending time with you, but not when you're doing things at her expense.

Why not set a day aside and spend it catching up with her, talk about how the world has changed since she's been gone.

      Signed,
      Selena

      ReplyDelete
    40. Your letter was very well written. Short, simple, sweet, and to the point. It's things like this that give those who read it something to think about and have them keep it in mind. I would look forward to more of these.

What one does in their own time is no one else's problem unless another takes it upon themselves to care.

Well, unless they're attempting murder, or some other act that involves more than one person, but that's just being nit-picky.

Along with that, I think you are right in the fact that the only ones who share an opinion on the show and its community are those touched by the show or brony community. Unless you count the many opinions of those who haven't, which is funny really since it'd be hard to judge something you've never seen.

Which leads into the rest of your letter about fearing if we'd be seen as "different" and whether we'll be judged as the lot of us, crazy or not.

While it comes off as sounding a bit snobbish, the opinions of those who take the time to learn about something and understand it, whether they like it or not, are really the only ones who should matter. If they only take a glance or intend to only find the faults, then any opinion they have is just hatred or anger.

It's like the difference between constructive criticism and just saying a person is bad in a review. One understands the content, but is telling the person where the flaws are. The other simply states it horrible, but does or says nothing to fix the problem.

Don't mind the rant. Well, please do actually if it helps anyone think more about the subject.

Thanks again for the brain food Phoe.

    50. Dear Phoe,

Generally speaking, it's a very nice message with a positive sentiment that I can't disagree with.

I think it is, however, important to add that if some peoples' "differences" get a bit too ... "NSFW," then it's not a crime against Celestia to want to not be associated with that person or his/her beliefs.

Anyways, I think that's what you referenced with the whole "fear" bit. Despite wanting to love and tolerate everything, it's important to know the difference between acceptance and irresponsibly ignoring something potentially damaging to the community.

      ReplyDelete
    51. That was nice, I think. I do hope we see more like it .. it'd be nice to see some good ones from the community, too.

    55. Very nicely lettered common wisdom, thank you for sharing! I don't mean 'common' in the sense that it's obvious (though one might wish it was), unimportant, or somehow less valuable than other wisdom, no -

What I mean to say is that it's good, solid sense. Words well grounded.

    56. @Anonymous

Worrying about "the community" gets you nothing but an aneurysm. You have no authority and no control over what others do, so complaining about it when it doesn't directly and immediately affect you only results in frustration and drama with zero gain.

The only person you can control is yourself. Act in the way you wish to act, interact with those you wish to interact with, and have fun instead of worrying about the way others have fun.

      ReplyDelete
    58. Seriosly Phoe? this blog is so god damned bias at times. We get it, you guys like looking at sexual content. But trying to stop people who are against that is wrong. Some of the stuff that people do is taking it to far and it will be allowed to flourish if we don't speak out against it. If you see a man beating a dog to death in the street you don't think to yourself, Hey love and tolerance man, some people are just into that kind of stuff. No you go and stop that man. The sam goes for this show. If people are beating it down and defiling it we must do everything we can to stop it. We will never accept it.

    62. And once again, Kein, and several others of you, become offensive over things you should know better than to raise a fuss about.

As editors on this site, they are all free to post what they feel. If they feel like voicing their opinion, something MANY reporters do, then they have that freedom and right to do so. In case any of you forgot, their is a law protecting freedom of speech.

Phoe is enacting that right. To try her and argue that her words are not allowed is no less the way of the pony than it is illegal.

      ReplyDelete
    63. What sucks... You see, what really sucks, is when people persecute you wrongly just because it's someone else's word over yours.

      ReplyDelete
    64. @Vanguard:

I know I'm not Phoe, just putting my two cents in because I agree with that was said on the topic and wish to back it up.

I know it's your right to not like what other people do, but it isn't your right to try and stop others from doing so. In a very endless loop, you forcing them to stop what they're doing is exactly like others trying to force you to stop them from doing whatever it is they're doing. It's not your disapproval or dislike that should stop, it's the belief that you are entitled to stopping them from it that should.

It's not your business to worry about what someone else is doing unless it affects you personally. People looking at sexual content is their thing and it does not affecting anyone else. Comparing that to a man beating a dog to death is quite unfair. Unless they were going into your home, looking up the content on your computer, you should have nothing to worry about.

On the other hand, yes, I agree that a man beating a dog to death would be quite alarming and I would try to stop it. That is quite different from people writing a story about it or drawing a picture. Would you get on an artists case for having a man kill a dog off in their book?

As far as "defiling" the show goes, it happens to a lot of things. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, but most people won't know about it or ever find it unless they intend to look for that sort of thing.

Saying that it affects the community as a whole may be true, but it would be in the eyes of those who simply overheard that one person did something and not those who actually learned about the community itself. Being unable to accept the fact that people will judge you harshly because they don't know all the facts is a bad place to be in. It's why there's stereotyping and racism.

      ReplyDelete
    65. Hey Vanguard/Kein, if you wanna complain about "biased blogs", take a long hard look at what Gawker sites have become lately. It doesn't even come close to what you're insinuating Phoe is doing on EQD.

    67. Phoe, I think this letter is great! I think it calls out quite a few things to think about, being a pony collector it's intresting to see each generation of ponies, and the fan base they bring with them. At first I was aprehensive about the new ponies, and the people who suddenly seems to love them. As I watched the show, and it's fans grow I realized that I was being the hoity-toity pony, and not the others. I'm so glad that I've come to love not only the new ponies, but the "bronies" too~

      ReplyDelete
    68. Shipping/Clopfics/admittedly creepy pictures aren't ruining the fandom. I'm aware that Clopfics exist, I'm aware that Rule 34 pics exist, and it doesn't change my opinion about the show or the people who look at the pics/fics. I choose to ignore the pics and fics. If you don't like those things don't look at them, it's not that hard... >_> In fact it's almost impossible to happen onto one by accident, you'd have to be looking for them.

And making Clopfics/Rule 34 pics isn't like seeing a guy beating a dog... It's more like being in an apartment. Let me break it down for you... While you're watching tv one evening you suddenly get the feeling that your neighbor is doing something inappropiate. You have no confermation to this theory, and the only thing tipping you off to it is your supposed 6th sense for this kind of thing. Now, you can be crazy and beat down your neighbor's door to find out if he's doing something inappropiate, or you can just go "Eh, who cares?" and start watching your favorite show again.

And in summary, thank you Phoe. That was a very thought provoking article, and I truely hope that that segment will become a tradition.

After reading the letter from Phoe (sorry about the mail mix up, I thought it was for me), I found out that my fears might not be totally justified. As such I came out as a brony to my best friend, the first person I have done so with. While he's not interested, he wasn't judgmental either. We're still best friends and we talk about what we have in common rather than what makes us different. We respect each other. Even if his love of Fighting type pokemon is odd. ;D

    75. @Vanguard:

I have things to work on so this is probably my last comment on this. Just so you know and won't expect a reply.

I understand that you don't like it, but it'll happen. In truth, you can't force anyone to do anything. If you'd like to start up your own blog, then that is your own thing and you can decide what can and can't go there. It's just not our decision when it comes to other people's things. That's not to say that any of the blog ponies won't take that into account, but it's still their decision.

I also can't force you to stop trying, but I thought I'd give you a little heads up that it's been in how many communities regardless of how well known they were and it won't stop because a few people don't want to see it.

      ReplyDelete
    76. Phoe, this made me smile, because it's so true. I have nothing to add, but I'm glad that somepony out there sees things in a reasonable manner and can act as a good example for the rest of us. n_n

That would be fair, actually, because the amount of subscribers to ger new blog will show a correct value of the people who interested in that.

      You have my sword!

Just because something exists doesn't mean it can't be controlled.

I think ponychan said it best sometime ago: "not everyone deserves love and tolerance"

Well, you're certainly technically correct that just because something exists doesn't mean it can't be controlled. In the general sense, that is certainly very true.

But in this specific sense, no. You're actually quite wrong. But hey, watching you guys piss into the wind is amusing enough.

    82. That was interesting!

Will all of these letters be written by Phoe, or are we allowed to submit letters and/or ideas?

    83. ... have you guys ever been in any other fandom than ponies? Have you guys ever been to kink memes? Or to online groups dedicated to many disturbing types of r34? Adultfanfiction.net?

Guys, open your eyes. Disturbing r34 exists in EVERY fandom, in EVERY television show, in EVERY movie. Have you ever accidentally stumbled on a Sam/Bumblebee archive? Or how about getting eye raped by a vore archive? How about reading an innocent little fanfic before you accidentally stumble on the part where one of your favorite characters get raped by a werewolf?

Yeah, here's the thing: on the internet, it's normal, and nobody gives a crap anymore since everyone is used to it, and nobody associates r34 with the fandom unless everyone makes a big deal about its existence.

I can list all the stuff I've seen that would put any, and I mean ANY, clopfic available to shame. Right here, right now.

    84. I would love to read more of these.

Though, to be honest, I have gotten in trouble for someone else's actions before. Several times. It's something I continuously fear because I still don't know how to defend myself against something I have no proof for, making my claims, truthful as they are, empty.

But I still agree with every word in here. My need to defend the fandom is still instinctual, but I try my best not to be concerned with how people view us.

    85. Here's a funny thing - maybe if we all collectively ignore the stuff which disturbs us so much, it'd fall into obscurity? If we give too much attention by complaining about its existence, it will be noticed, and if it's noticed you know that it'll be taken into consideration within the fanbase... y'know... with how many people not letting it fall into a secluded corner, because everyone loves to lap up every negativity in anything they see.

    86. Just wanted to let you know I'd definitely love to see more of these.

That would be true if it werent for the fact that the comments on Equestria Daily are already filled with sick comments.

      ReplyDelete
    88. Hell you guys are acting like Phoe herself doesnt spread this shit. I mean she posted that butterscotch interview that supported sick content. And she talks about bondage and mentioned clopping to ponies in a training ground. shes a bias retard. And now she writes this 'better then you are' article. Maybe try being less bias phoe before thinking you can get away with a letter like this

      ReplyDelete
    89. Noooooo! This is exactly what she-who-must-not-be-named wants! Don't do it!

    90. @Anonymous

If that's what you came away from this with, then you need to read the letter again.

      ReplyDelete
    91. Actually a good way to do this might be to have a couple of these a month (so as to not overdo it), and maybe every so often have a couple of user-submitted ones (perhaps a top 3 each month or something?)

Just throwing an idea out there.
