Depending on the day, Trixie is either my favorite or my second favorite behind Rainbow Dash.

      @Anonymous

You mean when she... um... put on a magic show? With all the trappings and behavior normally associated with such a thing? And 3 of the Mane Six started heckling her?

Need more proof than that to show why we should treat her like an irredeemable bitch and hate her.

      ReplyDelete
    49. @Mr. Bubbles She lied about the skills she had, lied about events that happened. the other ponies said she wasn't great, and proved it with their abilities. Trixie used what little magic she had to do cruel and despicable things to the other ponies. SHE caused the ursa major indecent by lying about it. stage performers are supposed to talk themselves up, but that doesn't mean LIE. And when it came down to it she couldn't DO anything, twilight whooped her ass AND was nice enough to let her go. so if i use your logic, then that would make twilight the best pony. Rarity's is on the lower side of my favorites and she beats trixie by a longshot. trixie is a lying bitch, plain and simple.

"She lied about the skills she had, lied about events that happened."

You would have absolutely loathed Houdini.

"Trixie used what little magic she had to do cruel and despicable things to the other ponies."

She died Rarity's hair green. She hogtied Applejack. She zapped Rainbow Dash with a small lightning bolt.
I think your definitions of "cruel and despicable" are quite different from the norm.

"SHE caused the ursa major indecent by lying about it."

She did? I could have sworn Snips, Snails and Spike did by escalating the fight after the show was over, and trying to bully Twilight into a direct confrontation with Trixie when it was clear Twilight wanted nothing to do with it.

"stage performers are supposed to talk themselves up, but that doesn't mean LIE."

Have you ever even been to a stage show?

"And when it came down to it she couldn't DO anything,"

Despite trying her best, even though she knew she couldn't do it and there was no particular reason for her to do it in the first place (considering the only people she had had any direct contact with in town were those two idiot kids and the 3 of the Mane Six that were heckling her).

"twilight whooped her ass AND was nice enough to let her go."

Nothing Twilight did was any different than what Trixie did to the 3 of the Mane Six at her show in terms of "direct confrontation."

"trixie is a lying bitch, plain and simple."

And what is the baseline for this comparison? Rarity, who did the kind of stuff Trixie did in several episodes, only it was far less open to interpretation and no one really cares because Rarity was given the chance to apologize for it? Rainbow Dash, who barely pauses to breathe between the sentences she utters talking herself up?

This double standard is really annoying.

@MrBubbles: I am completely and totally with Anon here. "Heckling" her? No.

"Other ponies tried showing her up and she beat them. Trixie wins."

      1) Showing her up = absolutely false. She CHALLENGED the crowd, a challenge they accepted.
      2) She beat them = also false. The main 6 demonstrated superior skills in their area of expertise. She screwed them over with magic. Superior magic, yes. Most powerful pony of all time (as she boasted), no. Terrible personality, yes. I grant you that a stage performer needs to keep the crowd's attention, but she was just a bitch to everyone, ALL the time.
      3) Trixie does not win.

    79. Loving all the Trixie in this post. She is definitely my favourite pony.

I feel like I should defend her. In Boast Busters, yes, she was a bitch, and yes, she was somewhat at fault for the Ursa Minor being brought to town. But from the magician shows I've seen IRL, bragging and humiliation are common elements of a magician's show. Remember, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, and Applejack were heckling Trixie. I used to have a book of magic tricks, and it had an entire chapter on tricks you could use on a heckler to make a fool of them. They were just lighthearted pranks, and honestly, so were the spells Trixie cast. They did no permanent harm, and merely entertained her audience and made fools of the ponies who booed her.

Now as for the Ursa Minor thing, we have 3 parties that we can blame. First, Trixie herself. Now, I agree that the whole Ursa Major story was a stupid lie, and indirectly caused the arrival of the Ursa Minor, but I believe the other parties are more to blame. Spike was the one who gave Snips and Snails the idea to bring the Ursa Minor to town. I know he didn't exactly tell Snips and Snails to bring the Ursa to town, but given their lack of intelligence, I think it would be better if he didn't mention it at all. Obviously, Snips and Snails were the main source of blame for bringing the Ursa Minor to town, and I believe they should be hated, rather than Trixie. After all, if a fan of a celebrity does something stupid, who are you going to hate, the fan or the celebrity?

I will say this though. I don't like the fact that Trixie basically ignored the fact that Twilight saved her life. She continues being her bragging self, even though her story has been proven as false.

      TL;DR - I like Trixie.

She wont though? Why, because she was a one time character. And if they do bring her back, it'll be fanservice, like if they made Derpy a Real Character, it would be fucking fanservice.

      ReplyDelete
    82. Trixie is one of my favorite ponies, right up there with Twilight and Luna, though to be fair all the ponies are my favorites, just some are more favorite than others given the circumstances.

As for Trixie, lieing and selling yourself up come with the job, narcissism and abusing your audience do not; I fell that everypony contributed to things going out of hand, and that it was a mixture of everyone (except perhaps twilight) doing wrong that lead to it.

If given the opportunity, she might redeem herself, though it would probably take work.

    83. Dave Mustang, the cynical BronyJuly 14, 2011 at 10:11 PM

WHAT FUCKED UP, SADISTIC MAGICIANS HAVE YOU GUYS BEEN WATCHING?

      ReplyDelete
    84. @Dave Mustang, the cynical Brony

Nice presumption. Too bad it isn't near being the correct one. I hated Trixie at first. H.A.T.E.D. Then I watched Boast Busters again and saw how painful the ultimate moral was when it was based on what we were actually shown.
It is far too damn easy to view the episode as being "a showmare puts on a performance for a really lousy audience" to even pretend that the message put in at the end works the way it was intended to. I've been to several real-life equivalents of the type of show Trixie put on. That offensive, unlikeable bitchiness that you are so free to throw out as damning evidence for how much we should all hate her is part of the act. Its practically the entire point, in fact.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: If the intention of Boast Busters was to make Trixie out to look like an unlikeable bitch like they did with Gilda and Prince Douche, they did an absolutely terrible job with it.
There was far too much escalating idiocy for everyone in the episode but Twilight to lay the blame purely at Trixie's feet; and the entire situation started because Applejack, Rainbow Dash and Rarity got hot and bothered because Trixie was acting in a way that they (especially Rarity) regularly fucking act like themselves over the course of season one.

      ReplyDelete
    85. @Dave Mustang, the cynical Brony Gee someone sure is getting upset over someone liking a pony they don't like.

    87. Dave Mustang, the cynical BronyJuly 14, 2011 at 10:15 PM

Seriously, magicians can be cocky, BUT THEY AREN'T GOING TO OUTRIGHT SAY "I'M BETTER THAN YOU" AND PROCEED TO HUMILIATE PEOPLE BEYOND HUMOUR! The magic shows you've been going to are fucked up.

      ReplyDelete
    88. @TenchiFreak5 I don't see how Gilda could have any redeemable qualities. She couldn't take a joke. A deemed Dash's friends unworthy of her presence and peaced out, without even getting to know the other 5 well.

I'm confounded about how somebody can like a conniving bitch.

      ReplyDelete
    90. @Anonymous

She doesn't. Neither does Prince Douche. That was my point. Both of them were blatantly obvious in how awful they were to those around them, and it takes shitloads of fanwank to pretend that there are reasons for them to act that way.

Trixie doesn't require anything more to be viewed in the same light than a different personal interpretation of the episode's events, because nothing about Boast Busters was as black and white in terms of who was in the wrong as the events of Griffon the Brush Off or Best Night Ever were.

You still haven't answered by Sadomasochist magician question.

      ReplyDelete
    92. @TenchiFreak5All the mane 6 have their problems. the difference is, they all either apologize or make up for it in some other way. Trixie by herself is JUST a problem. As i said, stage performers are supposed to talk themselves up, NOT lie. A stage magician just diverts the audiences attention and causes illusions. The things Houdini did actually happened (or were at least close enough that what he did was straight-up indescribable.) Snips and snails were trying to prove Trixie WASN'T a liar, even though she clearly was, and what they were doing in their minds was right. That happened because she lied to them and all the other ponies in ponyville. Snips and snails were partly to blame, though it happened indirectly through trixie's actions and words. If trixie even had a smidge of a redeemable quality, she would offered to clean up the mess, or pay for the damages (which would have been easy if she really was great a performer as she made herself out to be.) Instead she ran. All the other ponies have redeemable qualities: Rainbow Dash is just confident in herself and her abilities (usually), and doesn't talk smack to anybody directly, unlike trixie did. Rarity just does her best to live with class and do what she can to help her friends, even if she does occasionally get sidetracked by her own desires.

Yes, i've been to plenty of stage shows, magic or otherwise, and none of them had been DOUCHEBAGS or claimed to be "the best at magic and have killed giant monsters".

Twilight showed she was MUCH more powerful than trixie. If you honestly think she didn't, go watch the episode again and tell me the two tiny insignificant, useless things trixie did to stop the ursa minor.
Twilight simultaneously did 5+ separate amazing, magic-draining things.

Fine, if i have to spell it out: twilight METAPHORICALLY whooped trixie's ass but taking care of the ursa minor.

Rainbow dash could've easily caught her and brought her back to an angry ponyville, but twilight was, once again, nice enough to let her go.

Double standard? you should include personality in your judgement. You're telling me that if someone came up to you and started talking like that, putting everyone else down and lying about something as equally unbelievable as say, "stopping 9/11" or stopping a nuke from falling on a town with one hand, that you would not think that the said person was a lying scumbag and nothing more than a waste of space.

      ReplyDelete
    93. Yeah, Trixie fleeing at the end is kind of the clincher. If it were just an act, then she would have said something like, "I didn't mean for it to go this far!" or something.

It's possible she was sticking to a persona all the way through, but we don't see any hint that it's a persona. And even if it is, the fact that she won't drop it even off the stage just means that's the 'real' her insofar as she interacts with anyone else.

Really, the casting of Trixie as a sympathetic character is pure fanon, spurred on by the idea that someone that overbearing and obnoxious is probably overcompensating for self-esteem issues, which most of us can sympathize with. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing, as it offers the character a lot of depth, but taken as she is in Boast Busters she's not meant to be sympathetic at all.

    95. @TenchiFreak5 also, trixie had plenty chances to repent for her lies. right after the show, right before snips and snails left to find an ursa major. right after incident with said creature.

it wasn't just about the act. it was that she continued to boast and lie AFTER the show, AND EVEN still when she was proved wrong, shown up and exposed, she still said "YOU'RE NOT AS GOOD AS ME" and took off running.

The difference between her and the mane 6? by the end of the show, they admit they we're wrong, learn a moral and try to make up for what they did.

Trixie is EXACTLY like gilda and Prince Blueblood.

    112. I am surprised that Seth hasn't butted in yet to say TRIXIE RULES!

Anyway, she's not my favorite character, not even close, but I dont hate her... The only reasons you can have to dislike her is that she didn't actually BEAT Applejack, Rainbow Dash, and Rarity, but rather just used her magic to used what they did and make said talent humiliate them. She IS a showmare, so she kinda has the 'right' to lie and over-exaggerate her points.

That being said, I am not a fan of her in any way, but I can see why she did what she did.

And you still haven't given me a square answer about why we should hate Trixie with unequaled fury for doing shit that Rainbow Dash, Applejack and Rarity all regularly did over the course of the season; including in that episode.

Sad state, that. But I suppose that's okay, because others are perfectly willing to actually put effort into doing so.

And while I've got your attention:
      @Dave Mustang, the cynical Brony

What the fuck is your problem?

I've explained why I thought Trixie was not properly portrayed as an irredeemable bitch like Gilda and Prince Douche were for that interpretation to be 100% objective truth. I've specifically explained why your initial attempt to label those her like her as apologists blinded by her voice acting or character design was presumptuous. It is a subjective opinion for Christ's Sake.

Why do you feel the need to make it personal? Why must you be so absolutely positively correct over this purely-opinion based discussion that you feel the need to insult people over it?

Feel free to disagree with my points if you like, but what right do you have to call anyone who disagrees with you over something like this some kind of biased immoral scumbag?

Even for shit like this, which is an entire universe away from something legitimately controversial like clopfiction, why do you still bring up the topic to smear people with it as proof of your supposed superiority?

Believe it or not, as amazing as this concept may be, I don't like Trixie because I jack off to her before I go to bed.
I like her because I think she got an unfair rap in the episode she was in, and I think many good stories could be made out of her trying to make amends.

In truth she was/is a unlikeable character because in the end she learned nothing about how being a lying braggart can cause you trouble and it is better not to boast and lie to make yourself appear better than everyone else. She was a jerkass to the end, just like Gilda.

I've seen Gilda get more shit for being an ass than I do Trixie. Hell, I see Braeburn get more shit for just being talkative than Trixie, even though he is more likable by far than Trixie is.

    124. @Anonymous

"As i said, stage performers are supposed to talk themselves up, NOT lie."

From what I've seen in real life there generally isn't much of a difference.

"If trixie even had a smidge of a redeemable quality, she would offered to clean up the mess, or pay for the damages (which would have been easy if she really was great a performer as she made herself out to be.)"

What about the part where she tried to fight the Ursa despite knowing she couldn't, rather than just saying "fuck it" and running off?
That, to me at least, shows that she did care. And while I suppose an argument can be made that she only did it to save face, I don't feel that how the scene played out supports that.

"Rainbow Dash is just confident in herself and her abilities (usually), and doesn't talk smack to anybody directly,"

Fall Weather Friends was her and Applejack doing almost nothing but this. Including several instances of them outright mocking Twilight for entering the Running of the Leaves.

"Rarity just does her best to live with class and do what she can to help her friends"

      Sonic Rainboom.

"Yes, i've been to plenty of stage shows, magic or otherwise, and none of them had been DOUCHEBAGS or claimed to be "the best at magic and have killed giant monsters"."

Your average real life stage magician doesn't claim that they have done stuff like defeated giant mythical creatures, no. But I have seen behavior not at all dissimilar from what was in the episode.

"Twilight showed she was MUCH more powerful than trixie. If you honestly think she didn't, go watch the episode again and tell me the two tiny insignificant, useless things trixie did to stop the ursa minor.
Twilight simultaneously did 5+ separate amazing, magic-draining things."

I never said she was more powerful than Twilight was.

"Double standard? you should include personality in your judgement. You're telling me that if someone came up to you and started talking like that, putting everyone else down and lying about something as equally unbelievable as say, "stopping 9/11" or stopping a nuke from falling on a town with one hand, that you would not think that the said person was a lying scumbag and nothing more than a waste of space."

That comparison isn't really valid, I don't think. That situation is too different from what actually happened in the episode, from the specific examples to the setting.

For the second half of (what I assume is also your) post:

      @Anonymous

"right after the show, right before snips and snails left to find an ursa major."

I can't really blame her for not coming clean then, because she couldn't seem to stand Snips or Snails.

"it was that she continued to boast and lie AFTER the show, AND EVEN still when she was proved wrong, shown up and exposed, she still said "YOU'RE NOT AS GOOD AS ME" and took off running."

Would it have been nice for her to apologize and try to make up with everyone? Sure. After being shown-up spectacularly by someone, in front of a crowd that probably would have been pissed at her even if she had gotten rid of the Ursa, do I think her reaction to basically flee is particularly unrealistic? No.

"The difference between her and the mane 6? by the end of the show, they admit they we're wrong, learn a moral and try to make up for what they did."

Which seems to me more like a problem that was necessitated by Trixie being a one-shot than it was by her actual actions.
Not the most amazing piece of evidence to support my reasoning, I know, but I'm not trying to conclusively prove that Trixie is the nicest pony. I'm simply trying to explain why I feel the intended moral of the episode was at odds with what actually happened.

      ReplyDelete
    130. @Dave Mustang, the cynical BronyOh dear lord I HATE that guy. Given a choice between a Gilda centered episode where she learned nothing and is still a 'jerk', and a silent cameo by Braeburn, I'd take the Gilda episode.

In fact, looking at the episodes again, Gilda and Trixie aren't actually evil, or even villainous. Trixie is a performer up-selling herself to draw in an audience, and is blamed when two idiots bring in a monster on their own. Gilda's not a pony grifon, but is that wrong? Not everyone needs to be highly social. And what makes her snap? Pinkie persecuting her over and over with malicious pranks. The others think it's just in fun, but Pinkie was purposfuly tormenting Gilda because she didn't fit Pinkie's definition of a 'good person'.

Actually, this kinda works into my theory that Pinkie and Rarity are actually evil...

    144. @Anonymous I hate to break it to you but Spike, Snips, and Snails would NEVER have brought about the Ursa if Trixie hadn't lied needlessly about vanquishing one. I like Trixie too but that entire blame game debate is pretty pointless, a lot of characters are at fault and it really stems from Trixie and besides it's a non-issue since the Ursa Minor didn't make much lasting damage and it wasn't like it was a huge disaster. No one blasts Fluttershy over the whole parasprite thing.

      ReplyDelete
    145. I like the medic picture but I still think Fluttershy doesn't fit medic at all. Medic is somewhat sadistic, mad doctor (and oh so awesome...) and Fluttershy is kind and caring animal lover who has a dark side but who manages to hide it mostly (and she is awesome too...).

      ReplyDelete
    146. @TenchiFreak5@Dave Mustang, the cynical Brony I was thinking that too. I love Rarity, so when TenchiFreak5 said she's acted as bad as Trixie it kinda bugged me since she's never been like that.

I actually like Trixie too though, but I'm not deluded enough to think she was right for what she did or that she's justified. I like her being a smug diva rather than being entirely sympathetic. I always find "the Libby" character (tvtropes term) to be awesome and Trixie has some fun qualities being Twilight's rival.

And if one were to really compare Trixie to Rarity how about noting that Rarity's very likely the best designer in Equestria, but she doesn't EVER go around boasting it to other designers and ruining their work and humiliating them to look cooler.

In Sonic Rainboom, Rarity wasn't really trying to be a bitch and steal the spotlight from her friend, she just got caught up in having wings that people thought were amazing. She was the first to be supportive toward seeing Rainbow Dash in Cloudsdale in the beginning of the episode too, the wings made her get a big ego but the important thing to notice is Rarity doesn't always act like that and when she did she felt terrible about it and apologized.

As for Rainbow Dash she might be a braggart but she hasn't really gone as far overboard as Trixie did when she humiliated others. Plus the difference is Dash respects her friends even if she has an ego.

      ReplyDelete

    163. I apologize but I would like to weigh in on the Great and Powerful debate. (That should be a discussion thread.) Anyway, the way I see it Trixie is a good example of a true Antagonist. She is Twilight's opposite in every way thus she brings balance. Twilight and Trixie have a Yin and Yang thing going on. I hope she returns to continue this conflict. Twilight needs a rival/opposite, every hero needs one. I think Trixie truly has the makings of a perfect Antagonist to Twilights Protagonist. An antagonist exist to provide another layer of depth and meaning for the protagonist.
Lastly if we have learned anything from Hollywood, people like to root for the villain from time to time. Not that Trixie is a true villainess, but the same principle applies.

      That's my two cents.
