That is actually pretty surprising. Were you all just so bored over the summer that you decided to give pony a shot? I'm really curious what drew you all in when season two wasn't even actually happening.

ReplyDelete1. I saw a VGCats comic with the CMC, and honestly had no idea what I was seeing.
2. Then I saw Pinkie Pie referenced in Fanboys comics, and knew it was a MLP and remebered seeing the same character (Pinkie) from the VGCats comic.
3. Wikipedied FiM. Lauren Faust, Tara Strong, okay okay, I guess I'll give this show a shot.
4. ...
5. Profit.
I think I joined in august. One day me and my friend were just playing xbox and he's like. Do you know there was a show on G4 named My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic? I literally burst out laughing. Then he told me a ton of guys were really into it. I thought that was hilarious. I decided to watch the first episode thinking, "This is gonna be horrifying..." As soon as I saw Twilight Sparkle in the thumbnail I thought to myself, "Oh no, I'm going to love this aren't I?"
ReplyDeleteSo I watched one episode. And another. And another. In my friend's words, I was "ironically falling in love with it". After going to sleep at like 6 AM and waking up the next day, I texted my friend like, "Dude, you need to watch that show." And he did. And now he's a brony too. Strange how that works.
If you bash MLP, you are inevitably going to fall in love with it, whether you want to or not. And if you say you don't like it, you're clearly in denial. Ponies rule.
I joined in July while watching Pony trailers of movies like '300' and 'Inception' on Youtube.
ReplyDeleteJune: I did not even know the show existed. Some of the better pony YouTube Poops were released around this time as people were bored and excited after the end of season 1. I laughed at the Poops, thought the characters were adorable, looked for more, researched online, discovered the phenomenon, watched the show, read cupcakes, joined Know Your Meme, started visiting EqD, read "Getting Lucky", traded most of my free time for the serotonin bath that is MLP:FiM and never looked back. /)^3^(\
ReplyDeleteOne of my subscriptions on YT favorited a pony video, clicked it, got addicted. I believe it was a Rainbow Dash one.
ReplyDelete@Eliteorange3000 I think it was May, just around when the Best Night Ever aired.
ReplyDeleteI personally got into ponies via the page on TV Tropes, and my overall experience therafter wasn't that different to everyone else's.
ReplyDeleteSometime in June: Huh. That ... that's a pretty big page. What's so damn fascinating about pastel-coloured ponies?
Sometime in July: ...Screw it. This won't make me any less of a man. I'll give it a chance. Let's check Youtube for the first episode...
Sometime around episode 17: OH CHRIST WHAT IS HAPPENING.
hmm when I joined the herd in like July/August it was after seeing a post about MLP:FiM on a different site talking about Lauren and her previous work I loved like Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends...soo i was like 'what the hay' lets check it out, been a very happy brony ever since :D
ReplyDeleteThe VGCats Forums aka /vgc/ (while they existed) introduced it to me back in November. Lurking there was fun since it was pretty much a /b/ lite since I had no interest at hanging out over on 4Chan.
ReplyDeleteMost of the stuff they liked I happened to like and when My Little Pony came around I said why not
And that's when I liked the Pony.
Joined in June, but am in the UK so the relationship to when it was shown on The Hub is completely coincidental. It kept turning up in and around webcomics I was following (especially Kagerou and El Goonish Shive), then there was an article about the phenomenon, and some links to mashup trailers, that linked to more videos and at some point I decided I had to see where all this stuff was coming from.
ReplyDeleteDownloaded Season 1 and marathoned it...
well, i was just skimming trough youtube for things to watch, then i noticed a video with MLP FIM on it, i thought "the hell is this shit....." but still decided to watch it. i became more interested in it after watching that video and decided to give it a go cuz there was such a large fanbase then already. i watched three episodes and got tired of it.... then an hour later i felt this weird need to watch more "i thought i was going insane". so i watched another episode and then i was stuck never coming off. this was in the middle of June, and as you said, i was seriously bored xD
ReplyDeleteI only started seeing Pony threads in the Flood on B.net in June. I actually was neutral about bronies, tried episode 1 that night, and loved it.
ReplyDeleteJoined in early June as i had seen tons of pony avatars on my favorite World of Warcraft forum, MMO-champion.
ReplyDeleteNaturally i wondered what the fuzz was about, found their huge thread about it, and decided to give it a go.
I actually quit WoW shortly after, but finding ponies is the best it's done for me.
When Blizzard Starcraft II Forums posted Pony craft, I was lured to the pony side. Curse you Ponycraft and your damn awesome lip synching!
ReplyDelete@DashTheRainbow
ReplyDeleteActually, there sorta was a fandom even back then. It's just that it wasn't anywhere near as large as there is now.
I got in on October, way back when the /co/ threads were filling up after episode 1 and the speculation on what would happen in episode 2 was still going on. Nobody thought to start archiving those threads until quite some time later, but there was a lot of "Hey, this is actually kinda good" buzz going on after just one episode.
For me it took the second front-page post on MetaFilter to convince me there might be something to this MLP:FiM thing. I dismissed the first post altogether because of how mind-numbingly awful the earlier incarnations of MLP were (see also, why I still have not watched Attack of the Clones). Then I followed the link to the YouTube video of "Dragonshy" and it was downhill from there!
ReplyDeleteI never really got any exposure to MLP until pony stuff started to crop up regularly on memebase. Being as I had exams to revise for, naturally I procrastinated and tried watching out of idle curiosity. Next thing I know I've set up DA, flankbook, fanfiction, soundcloud and youtube accounts and am making pony fan material pretty much full time xD
ReplyDeleteWhat got me was the humor behind some of the pony images that a kept finding floating around then a venture onto knowyourmeme had me convinced it was a worth while endeavor. I mean if a horde of Brony's could piss so many people off on 4chan it had to be good.
ReplyDelete-Im a proud member of the United States of Equestria
My story's kinda long:
ReplyDeleteI first came across FiM during the early months (January-ish) from all the TF2 sprays going about. At the time, I figured it was gonna be another short-lived fad I could've done without, but it persisted.
Around March/April, I decided to rewatch an old 4-parter I saw a few times as a kid. Y'know, for ironic humour. What makes it more ironic now is that it was the Season 2 premiere for G1. XD
It was called My Little Pony: Quest of the Princess Ponies. I recommend watching it on Youtube because:
- One of the side characters sounds like Optimus Prime (could be the same actor, haven't checked).
- The one-dimensional villain somehow has more personality than almost all the rest of the cast combined.
- Said villain can only talk through over-the-top shouting, and has a fixation with "powah", making him awesome (ex. "My senses... HAVE BEEN SHAAAAARRRRRPPPPEEENNNNEEEDDD!!!", "ONLY POWAH MATTERS!!!").
- Spike has a harem of Bush Woolies.
So... yeah. If you're a fan of irony, or just want to see a possible candidate for a G1 Discord equivalent, it's worth watching.
Ahem. I didn't actually start watching FiM until some of the users on my forum brought it over in May. I started watching (purposely avoiding the main fandom until I finished - it's a tradition of mine) but it took until around episode 15 to get me hooked. Though that was around the same time I settled on my "Best Ponies", which might have helped.
Found EQD soon after finishing the series, posted a few times as an anon whilst seeing how things worked, and have been coming here every day since.

ReplyDeleteMy name is Aragrist Larr Kahn and I came into pony in July. I had heard rumors of gay guys going batshit over MLP and thought they meant the old 80's show. I didn't know it was new. Then heard about an article on the Brony phenom on The Heidi & Frank Show and then saw the bumper on [adult_swim]. So I looked it up and heard talk of this horror fic called Cupcakes. I found it and read it and thought to myself. "This is the coolest bunch of guys I've ever heard of. But why are they watching the actual show?" So I dug deeper and got a look at some video clips and liked what I saw. I read some other non-gore fics and pulled the whole first season and started watching from episode 1... by episode 4 I was totally hooked. I started reading every fan fic I could find and watching PMV's and downloading songs. This all happened in the span of a week. I don't know if it's brainwashing but I like it.
ReplyDeleteNot good; not a lot of bronies joined this month. Either the noobs don't know about the polls, or this show is losing memetic value...

Well, I had first noticed pony macros popping up here and there, so I gave the show a shot and was promptly hooked. All that happened within July, so it was a very good summer for me.
ReplyDeleteWhenever they put up My Little Brony (part of Memebase, and yes, it was during the summer), I didn't last much longer after that.
ReplyDeleteI regret nothing.
I joined the herd during the winter break between WWU and Call of the Cutie.
ReplyDeleteUm, that kind of depends on how you're defining the terms. I'm not, in fact, entirely sure I qualify.
ReplyDeleteI've only seen a handful of the actual episodes. Someone linked the episodes on the Youtube channel for MenloMar...can't recall the full name. Watched the pilot, thought, 'oh, okay', then let it go.
Then, somewhere around late June/early July, found EqD (probably from TVTropes), and started looking over the site.
I've watched a few more episodes since, mostly to get characterization details - but it's not so much that I'm a fan of the show itself, as that I've become a fan of the fanworks EqD hosts - so I'm not 100% certain as to if I qualify for the title or not.
I had seen pony stuff around memebase for a little while, then after watching Pony Swag, my little brother convinced me to pirate it, and we'd give it a shot. This was how I got introduced sometime in June/July. Needless to say, I was even more excited when I found out about season 2. I believe this is also my first comment on anything pony related. Equestria Daily ROCKS!
ReplyDeleteA (now defunct) image board I frequented had the baked bads recipe/comic thing up for a couple months. That lead me to researching the show a little bit, just to find out where the images were from. In December I was playing TF2 with a (decidedly non-brony) friend when some bronies roleplaying Pinkie Pie, Spike and Princess Celestia came on and started pestering the server admin to watch the show. My friend wanted to mute them but didn't know how and I refused to tell him. I found it all so entertaining I tried watching the show. AND THEN I WAS HOOKED (this was was during the dry spell in the middle of season 1).
ReplyDeleteI have to say that what first got my attention about mlp was this image here: http://laslindas.katbox.net/?p=1072 So I guess I have Chalo to thank for my conversion.
ReplyDeleteI started watching ponies in late february. Someone linked Suited for Success in the comments of some Reddit submission, claiming it was a lot better than it sounded. I didn't have anything better to do, so I gave it a shot.
ReplyDeleteWatching it was weird at first, but I liked it right away. The animation was some of the best I'd seen and the characters were very likeable. I watched the rest of the season right after that. Found out about Ponychan and EqD soon afterwards, have been around ever since.
You know, it was pretty hard to miss. I was out on vacation with my family, so I came back at August. I turned on my computer and decided to check my inbox on various sites like dA.
ReplyDeleteMy face literally melted of to the bare bones of my head because of all the rainbows and ponies on the first page on every site possible. After recovering most of my face, I looked at my inbox and ponies were everywhere. I, by default, didn't like MLP and tried to ignored it.
But it didn't stop and after a couple of days, I decided to see what all the fuzz was about.
6 episodes later, I turned of my computer and seriously started question my own manhood.
After that, I was hooked and got over my so-called society-manliness and enjoyed the series to the fullest.
And that's how I was dragged into this fandom. Even though I have some problems with fandoms in general, at least some communities here are lovely and I hope it stays that way.
@Ace2401
ReplyDeleteActually, I also stopped playing PSO, I probably got kicked from the team I was a part of. xD
In my defense it wasn't just ponies, the bronie comunity has introduced me to some interesting things but the one who got me hooked the most is Warhammer 40k.
So now I'm spending my free time between ponies and Dawn of War.
And (lately) PSU, I finally found a copy, I know the servers don't exist anymore but I want to find by myself how "shitty" it was (by playing in story mode). So far outside of the god awful voice acting (and the fact that I'm playing with a broken analog stick) it doesn't look so bad.
Huh. I expected a lot more votes for October and November. The whole thing exploded pretty much instantly.
ReplyDeleteI started n the summer because I had more time to watch reviews and I heard good things, I tried it and loved
ReplyDeleteI first heard about the herd (c wut i did thar) around January, saw it on know your meme. I watched the first episode and the show instantly got my sympathy. But I've never been into series and I lacked time so I put it down for later. Then one day I came across a video of the sonic rainboom with Guile's Theme and I instantly knew I had to watch the whole show :D.
ReplyDeleteHmm... for me it was just by association. I frequent HALOLZ, a memebase-like site for games. One day, they had "Pinkie Pie goes to Space" (Portal 2 crossover). I was like "Heh this is funny, so I posted on Facebook a link to it.
ReplyDeleteNext thing I knew I was watching "Ponies The Anthology" and I'm like "Ok, I get the references, but not in context to the show." So I decided to watch a couple episodes.
I watched the first four episodes late at night, and my reaction was...well...lets just say the next day I had a marathon of 5-26 =P. So yea, after that I found EQD and Ponychan, and the rest is history.
My first experience was the PonyCraft 2 trailer back at the start of the year. I honestly congratulated the guy for being able to go through all the episodes of what I idiotically assumed was a stupid little girls show to come out with something impressive like that.
ReplyDeleteI tried to watch the first episode about a month after that. I couldn't make it past the intro... but the seed was planted. Skip forward to july and I was on Memebase checking out some pony meme's, saw an embed to the first episode and thought "Why the hell not, no one is awake anyway."
I believe it was about 8am and about 12 episodes in when I finally called it quits, had a sleep, and watched the rest when I woke up.
Abso-fuckin'-lutely no regrets. :)
Yes i was bored as hell in the summer, i didnt like any video games that were out, i was waiting for gears 3, and wasted my free time on youtube, i still dont know how i ended up on a pony video but i did, from there, history.
ReplyDeleteI joined when Andrew Dobson drew ponies. I had seen a Pinkie "haters gonna hate" avatar of her in her prankster outfit on Mokepon before that, though, and I think it was DinnerWarrior who put in a pony YTP. I didn't recognize the avatar, and since YTPs usually are made out of hated source material, I didn't think much of it.
ReplyDelete@Eric
ReplyDeletelol
same here, except in August
Well, that pretty much sums it up.I was bored in the Summer. Saw Ponies on memebase, checked knowyourmeme, and watched the first episode.
ReplyDeleteWow... the comments are interesting, but there are SO MANY...
ReplyDeleteMy little sister took home a My Little Pony coloring book and I looked at it and said, "This... is disturbingly cute." I found myself flipping through it and decided to look up the vids on Youtube. Then ponies invaded my dreams for the better.
I started noticing various pony icons and meme references around mid June/July on various other forums. I never was much of a 4chan person, but I have been mildly addicted to TVTropes over the past year, and I saw a few entries for the show creeping in with some interesting examples on various pages. Eventually, I found myself navigating to the MLP:FiM page itself, reading the series synopses and a few glowing reviews about it.
ReplyDeleteFinally, my curiosity was piqued enough to go and check out the show itself. The first season was still up in full on YouTube, then, so I sat down to watch it from the start. I realized I was enjoying the show a lot by the end of the second episode (I have never before seen rainbows look more bad ass, until season two =p ), and by the time I had screened the fifth episode, I knew I was hooked.
Eventually I noticed more and more brony comments, and with a quick google search, found myself here. I don't know that I'm really a part of the community yet except by default, but with season two beginning to appear, we'll see how that goes =)
I have a high interest in the (relatively) small community of YouTube Poop, and this show suddenly started showing up in all of my subscription's channels. I know that people usually make YTPs about popular topics, so I decided to see what it was all about.
ReplyDeleteI originally thought that they were making fun of it (as a popular new girl's show), but some of the non-edited clips had some pretty good dialogue, so I took a look at an episode. I believe it was Dragonshy that made me fall in love with the series.
*Strokes imaginary beard*
ReplyDeleteMemebase. Memebase and curiosity.
Joined around March. Was brought ware by Sonic Rainboom ending and the Night of Pony video, plus a 9 minute video of Funny Pinkie Pie moments. Started watching the series, went all the way to the newest episode at the time which was A Dog and Pony Show. Held my interest thorugh all the first episodes. Started loving it around Dragonshy.
ReplyDeleteThere was an explosion of pony art on DeviantArt, so my brother and I were confused. We later found out that our friends were into the show, though thye hadn't really pushed us to watch it. Then there was a break between airings of Transformers: Prime episodes and I decided to read FiM's TV Tropes article. That's when I found out about the Brony demographic and we decided to give it a shot. After watching Episode 20 in the Hub website, we watched more and became fans.
ReplyDeleteWhile I don't consider myself as part of fandom, I've known of this series since "the beginning" ("I'm just Pave", I tend to say). At first I wondered about the Spike-character where he was from and such. And then I started to see cross-over ponies and "ponysonas".
ReplyDeleteDue being rather being setting up my own business and educations back in early 2011, it was until week before the Season 2 I marathoned Season 1. Before that I already had read things about series via various wiki-pages and such, so I kinda knew what jumped into (ironic enough I knew more about Derpy Hooves than the main-cast. But I'm quite derp anyways, so yeah).
It's fun to live the "90's" all over again, but now instead of only having the school-amount of people to talk with, we know have internet. Not to mention I don't have to wait +2 years the series being aired in Finland after the USA airing.
i became a brony about july/august for a few reasons, A: i have a brony freind before i was one who talked about it, B: i had began to watch a bunch of pony videos online after i saw a shaun of the dead one, C: it was summer holidays i had no money to go out was back at parents house didn't have any uni work to do so all just added together to watch the first episode see what it was like and by end of the day i'd watched the whole season lol. it helps i've always been an open minded guy i'm also a film student so i don't care if somethings meant for girls so long as it is good, powerpuff girls was one of my faveorite shows as a kid although i only found out lauren faust made MLP after i'd already watched them
ReplyDeleteI saw the entire internet turn pink, so I decided to check what all the fuss was about. And then I watched it, and I was like "OF COURSE IT IS. I must tell all my friends about this fabulosity.". I'm always open-minded concerning this kind of thing, so it didn't take long before I joined the herd.
ReplyDeleteI had absolutely NO idea ponies were going on until about July... I suppose I was living under a rock...
ReplyDeleteA friend told me about it during school, and I decided it was interesting, but ultimately forgot about it until I discovered PonyCraft 2 on youtube. Then I watched the first 2 episodes and thought it was ok, but not great. But then, I had to study for AP exams, and what's a better way to procrastinate than watching MLP? My schedule was: study for Psych for 15 mins, watch an episode of MLP, repeat. I got through half of season 1 this way. I stopped watching it because I wasn't completely hooked yet, but then I finally caved in and watched the other half of the series while procrastinating studying for my AP stat exam. It wasn't until I discovered fanfiction that I actually became obsessed with the show though. I think the show is good but not great, but this fanbase produces the most amazing things. I love the culture of kindness and friendship that we try to share here, and the fanfiction is just awesome.
ReplyDeleteI was pretty oblivious up till late May, I'd been hiding under a rock trying to study for some really big tests for a few months, and hadn't paid too much attention to internet humor for awhile. Then someone mentioned a video involving a physics class (I'm a bit of a physics geek) and a cartoon pegasus breaking 1000Gs at a grad party, and I tried to find it when I got home. Instead, I ended up in the EqD PMV archive. A few good PMVs, some Eurobeat/Notacleverpony, a few comics, and I finally gave up trying to fight it and watched an actual episode about two/three weeks later (And one of those I was out of town with no internet). Getting my own laptop and having my summer work plans fall through around that time sealed it.
ReplyDeleteLooking back, I'd seen ponies in the Rooster Teeth comments as early as March, but didn't realize the significance. I can make out Applebloom and Fluttershy avatars in something old I screen-caped. It's really weird seeing ponies I recognize in something I saved before even knowing it existed.
I was looking up an obscure meme my friend posted in june, and saw that the cute dash face from applebuck season was one of the top memes. I decided to look at it and ended up watching the whole episode. Never looked back
ReplyDeleteI remember the first time I saw the show. It was the Friday before Halloween, and we got out of school early in celebration (because my school is awesome like that). My friend came home with me, and I wanted to show her how awesome the show 'Growing Up Creepie' was... only to find that Discovery Kids no longer existed! Instead there was... is that... My Little Pony? They made a new one? We watched it (the episode was The Ticket Master), and quite frankly, both found Rarity's melodrama hilarious ("And of course I would say... YES!"). After that, I couldn't stop thinking about it. I decided I needed to watch more.
ReplyDeleteOCTOBER BRONY, HELL YEAH.
August, from a Slashdot mention. I've since found 2 fellow bronies, and created (at least) 3 more.
ReplyDeleteNovil, dang you! I was just browsing Sandra and Woo, and he posted an ep. That was my first serious encounter. A person, with a good webcomic, staked out his name on this show. So, after a week or so, I TVTroped it. The TVTropes page had enough of "It's ok to be a brony" to make me seriously consider giving the show a chance. I thought Novil was talking about some fan animation at first, some little flash thing, with 20 episodes I had never heard of, so when TVTropes clued me in to it being a TV show, I...I can't remember how I watched the first ep. I didn't have good internet, so I might have watched the first on YouTube, but I downloaded them all off of MenloMarsailles channel shortly after, and got a friend started down the path a week later.
ReplyDeleteAugust.... some engineer in tf was Mic spaming the mlp fim theme XD and I got curious
ReplyDeleteIn late June or early July I saw a Brony topic in a forum I frequent. Eventually I checked it out and was amused by the pics posted and people's reactions but I didn't check the show out until August 1st. After the first episode the snowball turned into an avalanche, I couldn't stop thinking about the show the next day.
ReplyDeleteI kept seeing it around but didn't really think much of it in the beginning of summer because I didn't have a whole lot of access to a computer but when I got back I was uber-bored and saw a MLP section on Memebase.com I read a few posts and thought they were funny so I went to youtube for episode one and was hooked immediately this was like July/August. Now I'm a brony and never looking back.
ReplyDeleteGo July bronies.
ReplyDeleteLol I actually became a brony from a pony hater telling me to watch it to test out how addicting it was. Didn't work out so well for him...
ReplyDeleteAn article on Kotaku featuring the PnyCraft 2 trailer was what caught my attention. After watching all available episodes, Green Isn't Your Color was the first one that I had to wait for.
ReplyDeleteI joined late. Last month, in fact. They were all over teh internets, which probably would not have been enough to get me to take a peak, but I heard that the people who were responsible for this show were also responsible for Power Puff Girls...a show I also would never have watched, except my friend watched it and I was over at his house once when he was and I'm like, "Huh, this is actually pretty good."
ReplyDeleteSo I'm all, "Well, they did Power Puff Girls right, I at least owe ponies a sporting chance."
My reaction:
Ep 1: meh
Ep 2: meh
Ep 3: so-so
Ep 4: ! I...love...this...show!
After that, it's occupied my mind in much the same way that The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya once did.
I do not watch it for the plot. I watch it for Pinkie. She makes me lawl.
it took me so long to get into it because when i first heard about it (mid-spring) i had a lot of work i needed to do. So when may came about, i said "allright ill give it a look"
ReplyDeleteand here we are.
My discovery of MLP:FiM was a direct result of the Japanese Tsunami/Earthquake.
ReplyDeleteI don't like to spend much time at sites like /b/. Sometimes I'd get bored or curious, and visit for a few hours, then get bored again and disgusted with the worst parts of humanity and leave again for a few months. I usually only follow the doings of Anonymous and their activities in the world.
When I saw CNN that day in March... I thought... "Oh God, all those people..." then a few hours later it hit me, "Oh God, /b/ just saw Japan, home of anime and meme fuel get washed away!"
I jumped on /b/ and saw the epic sticky "Japan sinks in ocean: Wat do?". I was sick that week with a nasty stomach bug and couldn't sleep anyway. I followed that thread for 3 days, only a few hours of sleep each night. I also noticed the pony memes for the first time.
After the thread was unstickied and dropped off the end into page 15 oblivion, I noticed that page one had a thread with more ponies. It stayed there... It never moved. It would image cap and a new one would form and all would jump ship to the new one.
I noticed the trolls... and I noticed another thing. kindness on /b/. It was a /b/eautiful thing! Of course it was laced with /b/ style attitude. We're gonna love and tolerate the shit out of you!
I did some quick research, found links to the episodes, and marathoned those puppies till I caught up with the most current episode. I fell in love with the show from episode 1. I adored Fluttershy, thought Rainbow Dash was awesome, found Twilight to be totally adorkable. AJ was charming (I have family from Mississippi, so the down home southern bit made me feel right at home. Pinkie was the chaotic little girl pleaser that I had to tolerate, and Rarity was the prissy girly-girl. Celestia was epically awesome, and I fell in love with that poor little regretful face that was freed from a horrific prison. I eventually grew to LOVE the Pink... ie Pie in Feeling Pinkie Keen. Suited for Success made me love and respect Rarity and Applebuck Season solidified my respect for AJ, cause I was pulling all nighters for my job at the time. I connected with the characters in a personal way in those episodes. Luna quickly surpassed all the other ponies, because I love the redemption story, and I eventually discovered EqD, and became a fanFic addict.
Progress is my favorite depiction of Luna to date. As fate would have it, I have collected vintage calculators for along time, and had recently acquired my first abacus. Adorkable Luna was cemented into my heart, when I saw she had an abacus, and treated it as a friend! LOL!
I have had the good fortune to meet a local brony or two, and I've done things like make DVDs for my brother's kids, and my mother. My mother knows I have some blind bag ponies... she hasn't seen my full collection. I chose to support my online MLP viewing by supporting hasbro with toy purchases. I've given them away to my brother's kids as birthday gifts. I have made every attempt to have a varied collection myself... It's big. My wallet has a grid style check list of all the known released pony toys and which ones I have checked off. That Blu-Ray check needs to get checked off, HASBRO!!!
I did not need coercion or prodding to fall in love with ponies. I saw kindness on /b/ for the first time in my life, and KNEW this had to be good. I sought it out, because I WANTED to give it a chance!
I was growing tired of seeing ponies everywhere, so i decided to give it a shot. And hey, you know what? I love seeing ponies everywhere. There are not enough ponies everywhere. There should be more ponies. Everywhere.
ReplyDeleteI was bored during the summer, found the KYM article. I had seen plenty of pony images before and wondered what they all meant. That said, it was a good few months in before I decided to watch the first episode. I found it to be funnier than most of the other stuff at the time and kept watching. I got hooked bad. I am in the middle of trying to convert my brother.
ReplyDeleteI joined in July. I started seeing these really neat, well drawn cartoon ponies popping up on memebase and YouTube. Finally one day I decided to find out What these intriguing ponies were all about so I found them on know your meme and read all about this show called MLP FiM, it's spread to the Internet and the story of it's unlikely fan base. At first I was amused by The concept of this devoted fan following of mostly men towards such a show. Then I came across a link to the Ponycraft 2 pmv, and it was that that pushed me to give the actual show a shot. I watched ep 1 and before I knew it all of season one. Brony ever since.
ReplyDeleteI knew about the show since before it aired actually. I loved PPG and Foster's, so when I heard about Faust's development for a new MLP, I had mixed feelings. On one side, I thought having a big name such as Faust working on this show could mean that little girls would finally have some quality programming to watch. On the other though, it was still "My Little Pony," something I used to detest immensely when I was a kid.
ReplyDeleteMy kid sister had bought a couple toys and had some G3 DVD's, but I thought they were horrible. I thought Faust would just be working as a new writer or something, continuing G3, not an entirely new show. So for a while, I just ignored it.
Fast forward about half a year, I was really getting into Internet culture, and would regularly watch a lot of YTP's and MAD's. I was also really into TF2 at the time; it was my favorite source for these types of videos. All of a sudden, I starting reading pony references within the comments and even the videos themselves.
At first, I thought this was just a really big joke: pretending to like MLP had somehow become a new fad, I guessed. I didn't really buy it as genuine fandom though. After all, I do consider myself a very manly man, and refused to watch something that had the word PONY plastered on it. I guessed the same about everybody else, since 90% of the Internet population is male.
But then I started seeing more and more of it, especially in TF2-related stuff. Needless to say, I was perplexed. This didn't seem like some joke anymore...could it be possible that now, watching ponies was somehow...cool? After about a year of hearing about the show and shrugging it off, curiosity finally got the best of me. It happened to be summer, and I had also just happened to buy a cable to have my monitor output on my brand new television. It was originally meant for gaming...
Of course though, I wasn't gonna just WATCH the show by myself. That would seem really weird. So I asked my sister if she was interested in seeing a new My Little Pony show, and she was ecstatic. I loaded up YouTube, and went to start up the first episode. I was prepared for cringe-worthy girliness and was expecting the worst. However, the mere fact that I was watching this with my sister didn't seem to fool my mother. She stared at me for a considerably long amount of time, asking me, "Are you watching a LITTLE GIRL'S show?"
I said, "Yep. It seems like a lot of people are really into it, so I'm checking it out." You would not believe how much my mom was flipping out when she saw me watching the show. She was positive it was some sort of plot from Satan to turn me gay or something. Nevertheless, I continued to watch, and at first, there were a few parts that turned me off (especially Pinkie Pie) but all in all, it was WAY better than I expected it to be. That was in late July. I had just turned sixteen. I continued watching episode after episode as the week went on. By the time I had reached "Winter Wrap-Up," I was like, "You know what? I honestly do enjoy this! I'm watching a show meant for girls, and I LOVE it!" My story is longer than that, but that's basically how I became a brony.
My girlfriend and I had been meaning to check it out for a few months (and even roomed with some bronies for Otakon); finally got around to watching the first episode we could find on Youtube - Party of One, good times.
ReplyDeleteWe ran out of episodes to watch a couple weeks before season two, so I wanted to actually wake up to watch the show on Saturday morning - but we slept in. Later that night I talked her into watching it online to cheer her up or something... "He sounds like John DeLancie. He really sounds a lot like John DeLancie. Okay let me pause this real quick and look up-- OH MY GOD IT'S JOHN DELANCIE."
Cue one cheered-up girlfriend, and next week we totally got up at 9 AM to watch us some ponies. Huzzah!
I grew quite curious after seeing pony memes and avatars in forums, but it wasn't enough to get me to watch the show. In July, PlayingWithMahWii (a Youtube Let's Player) changed his background and avatar to ponies, and that sent me over the edge into, "Okay, I'm going to see what the fuss is about." It didn't take long for me to get addicted to the show.
ReplyDeleteAn lj friend posted links to the first two episodes in June, I clicked them and watched since the internet was going nuts over PONY and I wanted to know what the big deals was.
ReplyDeleteI'll be honest, I thought they were okay. A little Sailor Moony, a little heavy handed with the morals, but definatly something I'd be fine with my child watching.
Tried the next episode. Couldn't get through it, the morals seemed too heavy handed.
Then towards the end of August, I had to housesit for a family member who has cable. Bored, with nothing else to do, I turned on the hub.
'Ponies, huh? *sigh* Well why not? It can't get any worse.'
It was the winter wrap up episode. I was floored with the musical number, and surprised at how honestly entertaining the episode was. Complete turn around from the last one I had watched.
Intrigued, I spent the weekend watching pony episodes online.
And have since jumped write into this fun fandom. Even managed to drag my best friend in with me, to ^~.
I joined in August.
ReplyDeleteWhen MLP FiM first started to surface, I was utterly disgusted. Not only was the crap EVERYWHERE, but how could adults likes such are girly piece of crap like MLP? So for months I would troll MLP fans and say how dumb they were and yadda yadda.
Few months later, around June, I broke down an decided to watch a few clips to use as ammo against 'ponyfags'. So watched a few and hated it.
Then in August, I was bored surfing Knowyourmeme, and watched their 'explanation' of the show and fandom. Not having anything better to do, I decided to give it a shot. So I muscled through the first episode, thinking meh..., but really what compelled me to keep going was Fluttershy's introduction. "That was kinda cute a guess..."
So I watched ep 2, then 3, then 4... Before I knew it I watched the entire first season in a single sitting.
That day forward, I acknowledged my inner- bronydom.
@Michael Butcher
ReplyDeleteFor me it was British peer pressure. When some guy who's a genius programmer and has a formal London accent tells you, "You simply must watch the Ponies. It's quite an excellent show." what the hell else can you do?!
I think I learned about the MLP fandom from fandomwank but after watching the beginning to a Dog and Pony Show in march, I didn't see what the hype was all about and didn't really get back into it until August. I think by that time, I was growing seriously bored waiting for all the network shows to come back for the fall season and after watching a few more MLP eps, I got hooked. Even now I still don't really like a Dog and Pony show, although I do think Rarity is flawless in it.
ReplyDeleteHALOLZ and TF2, that's what brought me to Fim world.
ReplyDeleteI loved the show when I was a kid, but then I got some prejudice for myself and stopped liking a lot of things, MLP included.
When the TeamFortress2-fied FiM opening showed in Halolz, all of those things gained streght in my mind... but I wasn't still gonna watch it!
It was only till Juny/July that one thought invaded my mind, it was strong and lawful:
"Why not?"
After a full insight and autoanalysis, I determined that there was nothing wrong in me watching ponies though I'm a young adult, after all, I like a lot of shoujos, slice of life anime and girl cartoons like Club Winx, Trollz, W.I.T.C.H. and many more.
Just to make it clear, those aren't some of my favourite cartoons, my love goes to the retro like Huckleberry Hound, Quickdraw McGraw, Tom and Jerry and wahtnot Dragon Ball.
I caught on after a friend commanded me to start season 1 just after it had ended. I took the summer boredom as an advantage and watched it while all the guys were asleep, and kinda shrugged it off. A week later I realized "Hmm, that wasn't all bad," and watched another. MIND WAS BLOWN. Since June I've been sneaking as much Pony as possible into my daily routine!
ReplyDeleteWell I guess you could call me one of the "original" bronies because I have been a fan since the very first episode aired. I heard from the site called behind the voice actors that said that Lauren Faust (someone who I knew had worked on fosters home for imaginary friends) was working in new show for the hub at like 8:30 am or something like that. I looked to see what show it was and it was my little pony, I thought it was impossible for someone like Lauren to worm on a show like that, but I watched it anyway, and by golly was it worth it, lurking around the all spark forums until I was linked to a video mentioning eqd. And here I am now.
ReplyDeleteI think all I really need to say is that I learned about the show via KnowYourMeme.com and the following Youtube:

Thank you Wu-Tang Clan! Thank you!
So, you want to hear the story of how I became a brony? I didn't think so, but I feel like telling you anyway, so HA!
ReplyDeleteAnyways, my younger brother (I don't know if he's posted here, but if he ever does, he'll go by "LightningSpike," I'm almost certain) became a brony at, like, the tail end April/very beginning of May, because he remembers "Party of One" being the latest episode, and having to wait for "The Best Night Ever." Anyways, so he started telling me all about it, and I was like, "yeah, sure," for you see, at the time, I was just wrapping up the Spring Semester of my Freshman year in college, and it was finals time. So, after I finished, I would often have to pick up my brother (his high school ends about a month later than my college), he would often bug me about watching it. In the end, I ended up making a deal with him: if he watched a certain video (or went to a certain site; I don't even remember anymore), I'd watch an episode of FiM. I was quite reluctant, but eventually sat down, and watched about the first 3 minutes of "Stare Master" (on Masterlinkx's channel) before I got distracted. It wasn't until a week, maybe two, after that, that I decided to really buckle down, and commit myself. So I watched the rest of that, and then watched some more episodes in no particular order. By this time, I was really beginning to enjoy the series, but I wasn't a full on brony yet. After I had watched a certain number of episodes, my brother told me to read "Cupcakes," and I'm gonna be honest, I laughed pretty much the whole way through. I mean, Pinkie was so badly out of character, that I just couldn't believe it was her. After that, I finished watching the entirety of Season 1, and then read "Bittersweet." I'm gonna be honest here too, I was full on crying when Pinkie returned that one last time. By this time, it was June, and I was starting to get more and more into the show. However, it was the family vacation to Seattle that really sealed the deal, and made me a full on brony. After a long, fun day of seeing the sites and everything (one of my favorite vacations of all time, btw, for many reasons, getting me to be a full-on brony being one of them) it felt so good to just crack open my laptop and check out Eq Daily for comics, artwork, music, and most of all, FiMfics. (I remember most distinctly getting into "The Sun is Tired" and "The Empty Room" back when that latter one was first posted, with only one chapter!) It was towards the end of June by this time.
And that's how I became a brony! (And how Equestria was made, apparently. I dunno)
Also, sorry if this is a double post, but for some reason, it's not showing up.
I actually just found out about it over the summer, myself, and checked it out after seeing a lot of it.
ReplyDeleteSummer came around and I was taking the quarter off. Started posting on the Accursed Farms forums again. When I started up again, there was this peculiar thread about Binary where everyone was posting in, well, binary.
ReplyDeleteOne guy posted a youtube link in binary, so i translated it and visited. It was MLP Ep 1. Idk why I didn't panic and hit the X on the tab, but I watched it, and I couldn't stop watching it. Been a brony since.
The first few while I felt weird watching but now it's like I gotta watch every week(winter wrap up a requirement) or else I feel incomplete. :|
Well since everyone else is... wait this is a few days old.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I joined from /b/ on the first day of spring. I had lurked a few pony threads before, but on this particular day, they were shouting something about "Winter Wrap Up" and I had to see what was going on. I started with episode one, obviously, and watched the rest over the course of about a week.
Newest episode was Feeling Pinkie Keen when I watched the show, so probably February. Funny how it worked out: watched the latest episode, loved it, read comments, flame war. This is probably why I'm disillusioned about the (general) fanbase =D
ReplyDeleteIll join the never ending list of people writing here...
ReplyDeleteSo I first HEARD about this from CR! because I follow him on Youtube and on thatguywiththeglasses.com
He did a video that was random, and had ponies mixed with movie sound bites that made me laugh my ass off, so I commented my curse you's to him for making me want to see more pony, so I did I found more PMVs and remixes and parodies with the ponies, then I found the name of the show and saw image macros and was all, well... Might as well watch it now.. And I did, the first time I watched, I thought it was lame, after the first few seconds of the opening episode where I saw the book and all that.
A few days later, I was so bored that I had nothing to do, so I was all, ok one more time, watched the first episode to the end and was all.. ok that was fine, then second, and was That was good, so whats next? and then I just kept going till around episode 7 and I realized... I love this show!
Now its like, my cure for depression in a PC, so long as I can watch or think about ponies, I'm happy!
@Nämahs
ReplyDeleteWoah.
@gato @Ace2401 @gato
PSO yay! PSU is dead? Oh well. It was kind of fun when it lasted (I played online for about half a year.)

As for me, I used to spend a lot of time in the chat for Daemonpage, and there was this girl there, who would ponify various video game characters, and they were awesome. For some reason, I never actually looked into it myself (wish I had back then, though). In the beginning of July, however, a friend from XForgery asked me who my favourite pony was, because I had just found and commented on how funny the image macro thread was, and I couldn't answer him because I had never actually seen the show. So, of course, to be able to give him a real answer, I had to watch it. And then I did, and I said, Twilight Sparkle, though Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy are also cool (don't forget about Rarity, Rainbow Dash, or Apple Jack, though. c:); then I went back to watching it.
And when I woke up, I was reading Equestria Daily. Actually, wait. . .
I'm still asleep; I'm still dreaming. . . I can't wake up!
I don't want to.
October 7th, 2011 for me. My friends we're busy or sick Friday, my friends from Warcraft TFR weren't on, I had homework I didn't want to do and I had already watched all my shows. So, in need of a distraction I went to youtube. Ponies: The Anthology appeared in my suggested videos and I was curious as to why so many people liked it, obviously the video was well-made but there had to have been something more, and there was.
