Apparently it's free to change your legal name over in Finland, and pretty easy at that. A brony on Ponychan has taken the ultimate leap of pony faith. He is now officially known as "Rainbow Alexsi Dash".
Have fun being shipped with absolutely everything now!

Okay, if I met this guy and he said his name...
ReplyDeleteI would break down in joyous tears and hug him.
Then, I - WAIT GAWD IM ABOUT TO SHIP MYSELF EWWWW
This is epic awesome, but also probably not the best decision. What are his future employers going to say? Better hope they're Bronies lol.
ReplyDelete@ProfesorRod
ReplyDeleteI lol'd.
I approve.
ReplyDeleteHaha, it would be fun to change my name to Pinkamena Diane Pie xD
Checked it a bit, and I doubt it somewhat. According to the law, changing first and middle names requires them to not conflict with the Finnish style of writing (and they might, we don't use 'b's, 'd's or 'w',s in here much, only in loanwords) and you can't give female name to male.
ReplyDeleteThough, on the contrary some have said if Aleksi only changed his first and middle names and NOT his surname, there are no trademark law limitations or such and the law doesn't seem as strict with first/middle names. So it's possible, though even then it might take much more time than he told it took (results in the same day).
Also, do note that he can only change his name ONCE without any good reasons. So in the case that this will suck instead of being awesome, he can't change his name nearly as easily back.
Still, as one guy I knew did, he could just insist that people use 'Aleksi' for pretty much everything without any real problems, unless you count minor teasing and long-stucking nicknames as real.
How is this amazing or good in the slightest?
ReplyDeleteIn before more cries of "Pedophile!" are directed at us.
Seriously this obsessive shit is getting way out of hand.
ReplyDeleteThere's being a fan.
ReplyDeleteThen there's being an idiot.
This person is an idiot.
This is taking it too AWESOME!!!
ReplyDeleteAll of my love and tolerance. Take it.
@Anonymous
ReplyDelete"And here we see how the "love and tolerance" flies out of the window."
I thought the exact same thing.
The amount of hypocrisy on this site is surprising. Then again, this is the internet.
Well, amongst the swarm of conflicting Data, I've done a little bit of research and found two sources that suggest two things, although I'm not sure how reliable they are.
ReplyDeleteSome information I found on Finnish naming restrictions.
I don't see "Dash" on that list as a surname
Now again, the reliability of those sources can be disputed, but after reading a bunch of anonymous comments with uncited data, I couldn't help but question some of the claims.
Now, as far as the thread goes, I'm not actually certain if this guy actually did it, or even had the capacity to do so. I'm skeptical, and think this guy may be trolling, anticipating a shitstorm like what has been laid out before my eyes in this thread to happen. If this all comes out to be bunk, then this has to be the biggest troll on the community.
@Crimson Valor
ReplyDeleteHate to be that guy, but the universe is flat, it has no curvature.
I think that is amazing.
ReplyDeleteI might actually change my name to Fluttershy one day...
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteYour insecurity is all the ammunition a bully will ever need.
Alright. Here it goes. End of the line. This is the crossroads.
ReplyDeleteOn one hand you can continue squabbling over pointless shit like this and start hating someone for thinking something different from you, forever destroying what love and tolerance we had. This whole thing will have been for naught and we'll be filed away next to furries and trekkies in the annals of failure.
Or, you can take a breather and remind yourself, it's just a name, and this is just a fandom. That people are allowed to think what they want and you should be happy for them being able to do that. People will do stupid things in the name of something they love, that's why they make music, draw art, write stories, make porn, and change their names. They're fans. That's just how it is, such is the nature of the beast, and it's beautiful. And we'll continue down the rabbit hole and see a wonderland where not everyone has to hate everyone else all the time.
I can only show you the door, you have to go through it.
If he did this, he's crazy. Some things you just don't do. Not like I believe he actually did it, though.
ReplyDelete>mfw so much as common sense = intolerance to some people
Nate here. I don't care what anyone else says! Mr. Rainbow A. Dash, keep being 20% more awesome!
ReplyDeleteThey said I could be anything.
ReplyDeleteSo I became Rainbow Dash.
^^^^^That fits.
Something i really have to say
ReplyDeleteSeriously EQ? this guy didn't even claim to have any proof of the name change.
So if i create a topic on ponychan claiming i changed my name to Twilight Sparkle within a few hours, you'll post it here? =/
You could a least wait for proof.
It just seems like trolling to me.
You took it a little too far my brony friend.
ReplyDelete@Naglfar
ReplyDelete>mfw you take the blue pill and continue to grump about people's harmless personal choices.
not as crazy as it sounds
ReplyDeleteI have heard other =y crazy names I read an arctal about a dude in California who changed his name to Jesus and another who got himself renamed himself obi wan kanobi not to mention there's that celebry who named their kid after superman
@Anonymous
ReplyDelete^
+1
I have undying respect for this man, but unless he's gay, being named 'rainbow' would make things pretty difficult.
ReplyDelete@B-ManTry this: http://verkkopalvelu.vrk.fi/Nimipalvelu/default.asp?L=3 If it opens up in finnish, there should be a link for the english page. That page is a bit more official than your examples. Using the search functions you can find that there are already male and female Rainbows and ms. or mr. Dashes in Finland.
ReplyDelete@Hertzilaväestörekisterikeskus.
ReplyDeleteNow Hasbro owns him.
ReplyDeleteThink of it this way:
ReplyDeleteWhat's the most extreme? A little tattoo on your hip that's going to stay with you forever (or removed at a high cost), or a name change that can be changed for free?
HE CHANGEDHIS NAME IN TEN. SECONDS. FLAT
ReplyDeleteYou know, that would be really awkward if he ever ended up in court. Not for him, but whoever would be suing or prosecuting him.
ReplyDelete"Could you tell the court who totaled your car?"
"Um... Rainbow Dash?"
@Aleksandr
ReplyDelete+ 1
Anyway, comon guys, its just a simple name. He could probably change it back just as easily as he changed it to Rainbow Aleksi Dash.
But still, you've got some balls man. *slow clap*
Confound these ponies, they drive me to... change my name?
ReplyDeleteI'm beginning to see alot of similarities between the mlp and furry fandoms...
ReplyDeleteThis guy-
ReplyDeleteThis brony took it to the next level.
That settles it. I'm rushing out tomorrow.
I'm changing my name to Scootaloo.
@Anonymous 6:59PM I did look them up, but most likely they all had some kind of ties to another nation which allowed them to sidestep this issue since it doesn't break English style of writing.
ReplyDeleteIf Aleksi went ahead and changed (or tried to) his surname to 'Dash', the fact that there are other people with that surname might actually prevent him from getting it. It would still also break Finnish style of writing a bit and you can't change surnames by just popping in and requesting a change.
@Anonymous 7:18PM Actually he can't. There is a law that allows changing first/middle names for no particularly good reason for once only. After that, you'd need to have a good reason to get the name changed.
Oh god really. I mean personally we all know this is kind of a stupid move. Its like changing your name to Nickelback or your favourite band or something. People who revolve their life around one thing aren't interesting people.
ReplyDeleteBut on the other hand its his choice whatever.
What I don't like to see is the way we trumpet this as a good thing across Equestria Daily. We're already being compared with pedophiles and furries and the Sonic fandom, and now we're like LOL SOMEONE CHANGED THEIR NAME TO A PONY THAT IS SO AWESOME.
Seriously crappy stuff.
Eh.. I'll be happy once I hear he's done with the military service and went through the officer school coming out as "2nd Lieutenant Rainbow A. Dash"
ReplyDeleteIt warms my heart to see how many other Finnish bronies there are around these parts of the internet.
ReplyDelete*brohoof*
Can't really decide how I feel about this. On the one hand, I would never even consider doing something like this regardless of how awesome ponies are or ever become. On the other hand...if he really did this and it makes him happy, far be it from me to criticize him for it.
ReplyDeleteStill, I can't help but think that there's a line for how big of a fan you can be of something before we can officially start calling it creepy, and this guy has clearly passed it.
AAHAHAHAHA! Oh WOW.
ReplyDeleteIf I ever met this dude, I'd love shake his hand. Hell, he's so f**king awesome I'd shake his c**k if that's his thing (and with a name like Rainbow Dash, I assume that it is).
There's an "Optimus Prime" that served in the US Armed Forces (I forget what branch), so it stands to reason that it was only a matter of time before a legitimate pony name popped up.
Say what you will about the weirdness factor guys...this motherf**ker's got balls that could knock you out cold with a single swing of his hips.
Russia should invade Finland so Rainbow Dash can do his thing. VIVA LA RESISTANCE A LA BLU!
ReplyDeleteWell this is surprising, but I sort of expected it. In the Transformer Fandom we got a lot of guys and girls that have legally change their name to something related to the series. I myself included have legally changed my name to Swindle (well middle name, but hey it counts).
ReplyDeleteLol. Give this man the internets award.
ReplyDeleteWow.. what's with all the hate? He's not hurting anyone. Its his decision, his life, and his right to do as he pleases with it. Personally, I think the world would be a lot better place if all of us got over ourselves and did something crazy and fun like this once in a while. I'd love to see more Ranbows, Pinkies and Rarities walking around.
ReplyDelete@Bunnylisk
ReplyDelete**Rainbows. bah, I need coffee.
But anyway, Good on him for having an adventure.
I don't get it guys.
ReplyDeleteA fandom is always very varied and made of totally different people, with varying degrees of devotion.
When a fandom gets large, stuff like this (on the high end of the devotion spectrum) are just bound to happen, and it's just the way it is. Fans all around have done way crazier things (for one, people here are telling of several name changes from other fandoms), and this hasn't changed the actual content of the show one bit. And neither has the fandom. This was a decision one single guy has taken, not the fandom as a whole, so I don't see how that would influence the opinion about us fans, or the show in general
I mean, there's a guy re-named Optimus Prime, so what? Will you despise Transformers from now on cause of that? Will you hate the fandom for that?
What a single fan does doesn't say much at all about the fandom as a whole. If anything, it shows Transformers might be good enough that displaying it everywhere you go doesn't feel a shame at all for some.
And I don't see why this can't apply here as well.
I dont know what to make of this...
ReplyDeleteSounds cool, but I still want to see some photographic proof.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteI should think so - MLP is a community for a specific anthropomorphized cartoon animal whereas furry is the general community for people who like anthropomorphized cartoon animals. How could they not contain massive overlap?
This is crossing the line.
ReplyDeleteThis man is probably the manliest man to ever live. When he dies he will need a second casket for his balls of steel. He will then proceed to beat the crap out of God in an arm-wrestling match, then a wrestling match, then, through pure awesomeness, he will become the new God and shall have an entire religion devoted to him.
ReplyDelete@R.O. Obsidian Solitaire
ReplyDeleteYou've reassured me. I was worried for a moment that there wasn't a line separating utterly harmless acceptable actions from utterly harmless unacceptable actions.
WOW 0.0 THATS PRETTY HEAVY!
ReplyDeleteWHY NOT CHANGE YOUR NAME IN A MALE VERSION OF LAUREN FAUST but "rainbodash"? really?
oh no, im considering (iff i have a daughter) to call her lauren 0.o
...So iff you did something you regret in Finland, yo do a make over, change your name, and no one will recognize you! :D does that makes itt easier to flee for crimes?
Yeah... no.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I'm devoted to this cartoon, this is just taking it way too far.
1. pics or it didn't happen
ReplyDelete2. I am okay with this. This stuff happens all the time and ultimately it has next to no impact on the fandom it is based on.
I'm not into this My Little Pony thing, I was tweeted here. I'm not hating on the show itself or anything, I haven't watched the show, so I can't judge it. I can only assume it's a well written cartoon, considering the fan following.
ReplyDeleteBut a man legally changing his name to a fictional character, really? And some of you are actually cheering him on like he's a hero, rather than an embarrassment?! Did social standards die on the 16th June?
Also, to all the people going "HURR WOW FINLAND", educate yourselfs a little. Just because it's difficult to change your legal name in the United States doesn't automatically mean it's difficult for the majority of the world too. In most countries, you can do it in a matter of days.
As a Finn I find this confusing, irritating and extremely amusing. I would have never thought somepony would actually take it THIS far, especially in Finland.. Oh, wait. We do have very bizarre sports. So.... Kind of... Normal...ish.. Nah, I'm proud of him! ;)
ReplyDeleteAnd it is quite easy to change your whole name in Finland, you just have to be citizen of Finland, and you're ready to go register your new name. It just takes a while to get all documents and such, and in regret changing it back isn't going to get any harder.. It might just be a bit of bother to go through the name changing rumba again.
But if being Rainbow A. Dash makes him happy, why not. :D
Oh god and I wrote that extremely fast trying to keep it simple... There are few things about name changing, and you can change it once without bigger problems. Next time it's just a touch more complicated, but not impossible.
ReplyDeleteoh wow I missed this
ReplyDeleteoh well LIVING THE DREAM
*Slow Clap*
ReplyDeleteOh, my slow clap function made it in here. Well, we at least have that.
@ProfesorRod Best comment thus far!
ReplyDeleteI don't find this nearly as weird as it seems a lot of people do. Dash isn't exactly that strange of a surname, I doubt I would raise my eyebrows that much if someone interoduced themselves as 'Aleksi Dash' (I'd probably compliment them on having an interesting name, actually). It's hardly like he's going to go around interoducing himself as 'Rainbow'.
Although, actually, in school I knew a girl called Rainbow, and while it was weird at first, after the first term or so of knowing her, no one in my grade batted an eyelid at it.
/faith in humanity
ReplyDeletethis ridiculous beyond words
PIC OR I NO BELIEVE
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteGive me just one sensible reason why we should keep retarded social standards like that alive?
If a guy wants to change his name into that of a cartoon character he likes then let him do that. It's not like he's hurting anybody. And if he's happy about it so am I.
Though I do have to say they should charge him for expenses. It's not right to use tax payer money for this.
This is stupid.
ReplyDeleteI guess he'll enjoy
-Never being able to get a job.
-Never being able to get into a relationship.
How is he gonna support himself?
Most names are just random words from a random language, anyhow. If you make my name pony, it becomes Silver Strength, which isn't any better.
ReplyDeleteLol someone beat me to it >_< I was going to change my middle name to Rainbow Dash
ReplyDeleteI give this man +2 of my internets. And those are the last two I had from last July.
ReplyDeleteThis makes me seriously consider taking Twilight Sparkle.
And I'm a dude.
But this isn't nearly anything like the woman who named her child ESPN. So some y'all need to cool yer jets. I imagine ANYONE who did that would realize full well what it meant. And he did it anyways. THAT takes a real man.
please adopt me...?
ReplyDeleteWow. There's being a fan, and liking all things pony, but that's pretty insane
ReplyDeleteNow, we just need California to be Equestria. Or someone to be Pinkie Pie. =D
ReplyDeleteYou have got to be kidding me. That's not dedication, that's mental illness. I mean I love MLP as much as the next brony. But I certainly am not going to change my name for it. To me the ultimate act is changing my Facebook photo to an OC pony I made. Though I would still like to take the next step, get a Twilight Sparkle lapel pin.
ReplyDeleteIf it was free in the USA I would do the same.
ReplyDeleteI think I saw a thread by him asking if he should go through with it...
ReplyDeleteNo pics?
ReplyDeleteDidn't happen.
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteI CALLED IT
Once I'm 18, I'm changing my name to Twilight Connor Sparkle.
And I'm using it for both formal AND informal use.
just call him Alexsi Dash =P
ReplyDelete-D4SHTH3R4INB0W
Quite honestly, I love this man for this. No lie. He is proud of himself, proud of what he likes and has complete faith in his masculinity enough to change his name despite being part of the show's periphery demographic.
ReplyDeleteKudos to this man, and godspeed. Best I can do is write a bit of fanfiction and the occasional fanart.
...Pooooniiiies, takin over the wooooorld, one brooooniiiiie at a tiiiiime~
@ProfesorRod
ReplyDeleteBest thing I've seen all week. You've made my day a bit brighter sir. May the Pinkie be with you.
You can see in the thread it's ALEKSI not Alexsi. Get your facts together.
ReplyDeleteI dont really believe this...theres no pictures at all, couldnt he had just scanned the letter he received or his drivers license? I mean really, its a stunt for publicity...dont you think if it was THAT easy to change your name a LOT of people would have something stupid?
ReplyDeleteIts a attention stunt, thats all it is, he hasnt done it because theres no proof, and if he did, hes a complete idiot.
I commend this man. Yeah, this seems like a stupid idea to some, and to an extent it is, but all I see is a guy who truly embodies what it means to be a fan. It took a lot of guts to do what he did. Most people aren't this brave. That trait is a thing to be admired. This is a mna who truly believes in his ponies.
ReplyDelete@Ewyndall
ReplyDelete@Filiecs
I had a completely different opinion until I read what you guys said. You're right.
But nevertheless I still wouldn't have the balls to change my name to my favorite pony.
Still no pictures?
ReplyDeleteI don't believe it for a second. I'm indifferent to his decision (he can do what he wants), but proof would be nice.
Oh dear.
ReplyDeleteI said in the thread I'd stuff him in a locker for this. Now I just need to get out to Finland and make it a reality.
ReplyDeleteif you're considering changing your name to that of a pony, you know you've gone too far into the fandom
ReplyDeletePics or it didn't happen, PICS OR IT DID NOT HAPPEN.
ReplyDeleteOh shit is this the guy who started the pony posting in Naurunappula? This is just sad. (and I'm a total brony)
ReplyDelete@AnonymousWell, that's only dumb because you can't spell OPTIMUS! But I get what you mean, but if it's free in Finland he could just change it back whenever he wanted.
ReplyDeleteHow DARE he do what he wants without seeking the approval of total strangers first?!
ReplyDeleteYou're supposed to SAY you don't care what other people think, not ACTUALLY not care what they think. That makes the rest of us feel uncomfortable about our inability to take even the smallest risks. Jerk.
@NightmareSnake
ReplyDeletemaybe his element should be courage...
Swear to god, if I have a daughter, her middle name will be Luna. F$&@ the haters, f$&@ the po-lice.
ReplyDeleteBronies: High. XD
ReplyDeleteHe is my hero.
ReplyDeleteI agree i NEED to shake this mans hand he is brave and knows the best pony
ReplyDeleteInteresting...
ReplyDeleteIn my Country you can change your entire name (first and last) name Once in your life, and only whit a GOOD reason (including divorse and fake pathernity)
but you CAN use trademark names (exambple: Marilin monroe I.; Michael Jackson F.; Jean Clove H.)
...
ReplyDeletelol?
I will quit the Internet if there's a Pinkie Ronald Pie somewhere in the world...
ReplyDeleteI think it's cool, but a little (way too) extreme. I would've probably gone with one of the more subtle names like Rarity or AJ, but whatever, it's his choice. At that point I would start worrying about him. Might be hard to get employed with that name lol. At least that's how it'd probably be perceived if he was an American. I don't know much about Finlands society and customs namewise so there's not much really I can say.
ReplyDeleteAwesome.
ReplyDeleteStill wanting to see proof though, so I can save it for great prosperity.
That's dedication and all but, why would a guy do it? RainbowDash is a girl...
ReplyDeleteMore power too you friend,
ReplyDeleteI hope it works out for the best.
When it comes to Name Changes, whether or not I agree with it, I always Accept to each his or her own. No matter the Name or Reason for having it, it’s their choice and always should be.
ReplyDelete…
This makes me think of that name 'Apple' that a Celebrity gave their child (Forgot which one.). But, I bet Applejack would be so much better. ;)
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteWould not do it myself, but...
ReplyDeleteSO AWESOME.
Well if you take away the Rainbow part, Aleksi Dash is a pretty cool name.
ReplyDeleteThis man is clearly the greatest person of all time.
ReplyDeleteHis name just became 20% cooler =)
ReplyDeleteThat's a pretty serious commitment, so respect, love, and tolerance where it's due.
ReplyDeleteFor what it's worth, though, ProfessorRod was right. :)
I'm seriously thinking about changing my name to FlutterShy.
ReplyDeleteAnd no, I'm not kidding.
Fags
ReplyDeleteMan, this is the most popular post in the website for quite awhile.
ReplyDeleteFor the controversy, I'm only worried how this will affect his life. But apparently, his previous name is actually just as bad, so depending on how bad it was I guess it won't be too harmful.
On its effect on others' views on us... I just care about the media showing us in a bad light. But their unwillingness to research further on us seems to have backfired on them. They're never going to find this out and use it against us. They didn't so far.
Fags
ReplyDeleteFurther proof that 'Finland is Win-land' to more than just American metal fans.
ReplyDelete@Captain British
ReplyDeleteNo, that's not dedication... that's f**king sad...
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteyes, because everyone wants their name associated with ferris wheels...
I don't see why you have so much against him doing it. It hurts no one, if anything it spreads joy. Plus, giving the freedom in Scandinavia it's no problem to change the name back if it creates problems.
ReplyDeleteI myself am changing part of my first name to Fluttershy. Why? Because I can, because I like the name, because I hate my current name, because the show and character have change who I am as a person.
I don't even have anything to say to this, it's just... sad. I don't even think otakus would go that far.
ReplyDeleteI ... don't think he'll ever get married, to tell you the truth. Because nobody in their right minds would want to be known as `Mrs. Dash'
ReplyDeleteHere in Germany you can change your name that easy too. But you must be atleast 18 years old. Still, that would be a step too far for me, I think.
ReplyDeleteGo Finland!
ReplyDelete...Siis mitä vittua?
ReplyDeleteI tought that by Finnish law you can only have Finnish name, unless you have a foreign parent, which gives you the right to have that foreign countrys name? Or is it just the birth name? Anyways I think that guy was really REALLY high... Or just wanted to show his bronyness for everyone he ever told his name.
If he can change his name to Rainbow Dash, i can change my name to Albert Wesker.
ReplyDeleteforeveralone.jpg
ReplyDeletewell then you should have done HER FULL name and should have been a girl too
ReplyDeleteThe hate here pisses me the fuck off. It's a name. He did it because he likes the fandom, a lot. Sure, maybe he's a bit obsessed. But don't you think that some people have a REASON to be obsessed? This show and its community might well be the single source of happiness for this guy that keeps him going. It might not be. It's like that for some people, and if they want to embrace their fandom like this guy has, then let them. Thumbs up to them for being brave, standing up tall and learning to face their fears. Of social ridicule, that is.
ReplyDeleteWait wtf i read this a while ago but still wtf. Wouldn't you change it to something a bit more subtle. These kind of people give bronies their 'crazy' stereotype :( But i guess if he's happy then what the hell good on him :)
ReplyDeleteThat guy is now 20% cooler
ReplyDeleteLook, a real Brony might disagree with this decision, but would never have a hate-on because of this. This thread has done a great job of separating the Bronies from the /b/ronies.
ReplyDelete*hoofclap* to this gentlecolt. I think he went a bit to far, but I admire his gusto and love and tolerate.
:D
ReplyDelete*faints*
Did he ever post proof?
ReplyDeleteOkay, First of all, this man - he has rather large balls. Not gonna lie, I might change my name to a reference, but not to a mares name. If I was a buff guy... Big Macintosh actually doesnt sound that baad :D
ReplyDeleteSorry, but that's just over the top. You can be a fan, but that's crazy.
ReplyDeleteAssuming you can change it as many times as you want, I don't see a reason why not to.
ReplyDelete@AliceInChains
ReplyDeleteFirst off let me just say:
ReplyDeleteSO
MUCH
WIN.
Secondly:
Neighsayers! This isn't the brony community I've grown to love. This does not go against anything MLP stands for. It is a grand demonstration of dedication! It is not obsession, which is losing the reason for loving something/somepony and blindly loving it simply to love it! Never forget why you love MLP and whatever that love drives you to do, more power to you!
oh my god that is amazing

THERES NOT MUCH TIME.
CELESTIA IS NEW QUEEN
He never got a chance to prove it before the thread was locked...
ReplyDeleteit's one thing to start a website or get a tattoo or something, but, changing one's name to Rainbow Dash isn't the smartest thing to do....
ReplyDeleteso I'm guessing his favorite pony is Pinkie Pie?
O__O
ReplyDeleteO__O
ReplyDeleteLeap of faith? More like a plunge of uncertainty.....
ReplyDeleteWow. I need to meet this guy. And give him a brohug. He deserves it.
ReplyDeleteone small step for one brony, one huge leap for brony kind! *applause*
ReplyDeleteis rainbow real yes it is em I don't know really sorry
ReplyDelete
