    Author: short skirts and explosions
Description: A horrible Cataclysm has turned all of Equestria into a Wasteland of barren ash and twilight desolation. The Sun and the Moon have been destroyed. Everypony has died--including Princesses Luna and Celestia. But one pony miraculously survives; she is a lone wanderer, the last of her kind, surrounded by menacing creatures that hate her. She navigates the Wastes in an airship and scavenges off the blighted landscape to keep herself alive.
Then one day she meets an old companion who grants her a gift, the chance to go back in time to the warm and sunny days of Ponyville, where her dead friends live in happiness. How far will the last pony venture into these joyous days of Equestria, even if she fully knows that there is no way to change the horrible fate of everypony she loves?

Red is a Diamond Dog that survived the cataclysm that brought about the end of Equestria. He lives in the Wasteland, operating a mechanic shop and airstrip. His life is simple; he spends his days working on airships and serving his pack. As a stormfront blows overhead, Red remembers      a chance encounter with the Last Pony, and sets out on an adventure, determined to hunt down the last equine in the world.

    3. There are not enough words in the dictionary that could describe how epic this really is. All the laughter, joy, sadness, bitterness, all of it! I felt tons of emotions while reading this! Hope to see the next arc soon enough :)

    4. I'm halfway through the Slaughterpink 5 chapter, and I'm just so impressed by the depth of this story, I can't express it in words. This story could have been just a stunning example of imagery and adventure at its finest... but not only has it succeeded in that, but it has dared to be more than that. Like Fallout: Equestria, this story delves deeply into the dichotomy between the cynicism of the wasteland and the relentless optimism that ponies somehow innately embody. Whereas FoE beautifully considered the corruption and resurrection of virtue, by this point in the story, The End of Ponies has begun to touch on much deeper philosophical issues: existentialism, religion, the sacrifices necessary for a functioning society, the fine line between optimism and escapism. Truly, the arcs feel somewhat disjointed, as if they were separate stories (and the purpose of the author seems to move away from the adventure and more towards the philosophical), but this is exactly the dynamic nature of the novel that makes it stand out. I look forward to reading more, and I have no doubt that my mind will explode even more times, in the best possible way.

    9. Took just one chapter.

      One. Chapter.

And now I'm in it for the long haul. Great, just when I thought I'd have more free time after finishing Fallout: Equestria. This one starts out epic, continues epic, and promises more epic. The first chapter is basically three frentic-paced amazing action sequences in a row, a reading experience that can only be further augmented by having ACDC's "Thunderstruck" playing on loop in the background.

Looking forward to getting caught up over the next week!

    10. The update for Pinkie was quite a dance. Aside from the largest series of interruptions and distractions I've ever had to face when just trying to read something. It was a great read, it kept me glue in place hungrily reading each chapter. I was impressed by the size of this update but the only complaint I have is the chapter is over and now I must wait for the next one.

    11. I can't even get through the first Fluttershy part. Several pages long flashbacks are too boring imo.

      ReplyDelete
    12. I enjoy your story, I really do. I plan to read it to its completion however long that is. That said, I felt chapter 11 was overwritten which is quite a statement considering your word choice in general. I also find you really like comparing eyes to "twins."
My biggest issue thus far however is the fact that you've successfully created a Fluttershy character I don't like. She doesn't feel consistant, a lot of the adjectives and verbs you use with her have romantic or even sexual connotations in the manner they're used, and she's just so... jaded. She has managed to become a dumb good person.
Allow me to share with you how I define a "dumb good person". A character that, regardless of the situation, always stays true to their morals and, this is crucial, forces their morals on others. For example, unknowing of Harmony's situation she managed to set a standard and scold Harmony according to her preconceptions rather than even attempt to understand why her opinons exist as they are. Something I find makes her a hypocrite.
I also, can't believe Fluttershy doesn't understand the chicken and the egg. One can't exist without the other. Kindness does not exist without cruelty because without eithers' opposite they cannot be defined.
Being an idealist is one thing but this is akin to being a close minded devout religious (wo)man or far aligned political supporter.
The other thing I have concerns regarding, not neccessarily complaints, is the image you painted of Fluttershy to Scoot. Normally someone that means that much to the protagonist would have to wait till the end. That leaves me concerned as to how the other time jumps will match up in terms of importance. RD I already presume is last even though she straight up said that RD wasn't as "important" to her as Fluttershy.
(The quotes around important are because I don't mean that by it's strictest definition.)

I apologize if I've stated my point too harshly or if I've missed something that everypony else caught. It's just the more I read Fluttershy the more she irritates me.
I'll now return to catching up.

    13. @Tzeentch

To be honest any part I deemed too long and boring I skimmed. I literally skimmed half of Chapter 1 and a portion of Chapter 2. The part with all the flashbacks in the Fluttshy arc I skipped. I promised that if I ever re-read the fanfic from start I'll properly read Chapter 1, 2 and the Fluttershy flashbacks, but I just couldn't really be arsed.

    14. I've been following this for some time now, since just before the Applejack arc (sometime around there), and I can't stop reading this.
You have managed to make a story that is so heart-wrenchingly beautiful, I have to hold back tears with nearly every chapter.
That said, some of the fluttershy chapters were a little overwritten, and I skimmed the latter half of the Everfree Forest escapade with Dinky, mostly because of the constant flip-flop.
Other than that, Keep it up. I regret that Luna, the mistress of slumber, calls me, or otherwise i would be devouring the newest chapters.

Oh I know, get the one bad thing out of the way. Those ponies love to saunter and sashay... Can you say overused words?

Ahem... Now that the ONE bad thing is out of the way, let's get on to the good part.
      Oh wait, that's everything.
I'm absolutely in love with this story, it's done incredible things to stimulate my imagination that haven't been done in years. I used to love doing my chores because it meant I could be outside imagining stories and worlds by myself for literally hours every day. I'd put myself to sleep daydreaming up such stories at bedtime. In the past several years, that kind of just stopped. This story has managed to rekindle that fire. I've already, with the same child-like excitement, come up with something like 7 endings for the story (Harmony ascending to be an alicorn goddess and the new ruler of Equestria anyone?)
On top of that, this story has made me cry openly. Written word has NEVER in my life done that for me. Bittersweet and My Little Dashie both made me feel like crying, but no tears were shed. When infernite claimed its victim in the latest arc (Avoiding spoilers), I cried, but the bittersweet moment put a smile on my face too.
This story has also made me appreciate the real world we live in. I know that sounds endlessly cheesy, but it's completely true. I found myself staring up at the clouds and being truly thankful for such a small thing.
Time travel is my favorite kind of story, so I was bound to like this one. This story is incredible. It's, as of last arc, already three novels' length. There haven't been too many typoes, but it's not devoid of them (Pinky?).

Oh, and I totally saw that Hydra scene coming. And the reference hidden in said scene made me crack up for a full five minutes.

Keep it up Short Skirts. You've got something amazing here.

    19. Homestuck reference:

“I told you, Miss Pie! I told you about those staplers, girl!”
“It keeps happening!” The filly whimpered, suddenly balancing four staplers across a nose, a forehead, and two front hooves.

    21. I do believe this is the best I've seen Pinkie Pie portrayed in a serious atmosphere. The way she acts pretty much exactly as she does in the show in the face of such grim-darkness is very well done. In particular, her speech in the final chapter is quite excellent.

      Well done, good sir.

    22. Was well worth the wait for these chapters. And it was about my favorite pony of all time! At times it felt it was dragging on a bit, but still a awesome read. I shall patently wait for me.

Welp, time to go blow something up!

    23. I have read 18 chaps in 2 days. I think this fic so far is larger than two of the largest Harry Potter books combined. Anyway this story is not a fanfic or a novel, it is an epic somewhat like Homer's Iliad and Odyssey and The Canterbury Tales. It is amazing to see a story of this length. I love it but at times it does seem to drag on and on.

      ReplyDelete
    24. These chapters are very long! This makes the awesomeness last, thank you!
Is the last pony going to visit all of the mane 6? that would be awesome.
The only thing I dont like is how some of them same themes continuously reappear many times unnecessarily, but sometimes it is good like the thing about Harmony I like that. Well then, hope this was interesting to write and I hope you dont stop now!

    26. sorry ben but you lie.... the first 18 chapters took me about a combined 58 hours to read.....and 70 hours for 24, even if your a faster reader there is no way in hell you read them in 2 days
and btw at over 500,000 words eop is just short of halfway in lenght of the entire harry potter series which is a little short of 1.1 million

    27. I've been looking through the comments, and I'm surprised that nobody found this out, but there is an Easter-egg in the names of the Pie family. I was randomly shining shoes when I reviewed over the names Pinkemina, Inkessa, Blinkaphine, and Clyde, which is the names of the children, and I noticed that the names are the shorthand versions of the ghosts from Pac-man.
P.S. If you don't know the names of the ghosts from pac-man, its: Inky, Blinky, Pinky, and Clyde.
My mind was completely blown when I noticed that.

    28. All righty, I just got caught up to the chapter Evershy, and I've gotta say that for a story with a [Grimdark] tag, this one is just so full of raw beauty and warm-feelings! Considering the tags, the title, and the first couple of chapters, I was expecting a Fallout: Equestria sort of experience with a really dark violent world in a downward plunge. But I'm very pleasantly surprised to see that you used this apocalyptic future as a juxtaposition against Ponyville as we know it, and the contrast really brings out just how vibrant and warm the world of Ponyville is.

I've still got a lot of catching up to do, but I'm getting there. Definitely going to take my time, though, because of how much I'm truly enjoying the ride.

Absolutely beautiful so far. I never would've imagined that a story that begins with the sky exploding would evolve into something so thought-provoking, deep, and vivid. It totally trumped my expectations, and I must say how much I love it because of such.

      ReplyDelete
    29. I've been staying away from this story, 'cause it sounded so depressing. But then I accidentally started reading.

And oh my goodness. The writing. It's beautiful.

Thus far, I've only gotten to the end of Chapter 6 / The End of Ponies: Where You Lay Your Head and the identity of Harmony was revealed. And.. and... OMG.

But the fact that time is immutable... :( So the catastrophe can't be averted. Here's to hoping in the end, it's a predestination paradox - because of Harmony, the Princesses are warned and somehow (maybe) all the souls of ponies are shifted (transcended?) to a different universe, leaving behind their the bodies Scootaloo has been finding. But Scoots had to be left behind for the purpose of ensuring Harmony was there to pass on the warning. With this realization, Scootaloo and Spike can do so as well, and we'll get a happy ending?

    31. All right, I know, not proper form to throw a comment down after reading every couple of chapters while still in "catch-up" mode. But I cannot...CAN NOT...stop myself from extending a tremendous ovation your way for the chapter "Everlove." The way it all came together, the resolution, the way it all goes full circle with the flashback...my word, that scene you kept baiting when Scootaloo goes down the stairs and pours out her feelings for her mother while Fluttershy sleeps! I just loved how you kept dangling it in front of the reader not saying what happens next, with Harmony refusing to see it through to the end, and then showing that it's not a scene of catastrophe but of Scootaloo's weakest most vulnerable state. Totally emotional rollercoaster there.

Again, absolutely beautiful writing, I wish more people were giving feedback so I wouldn't look like I was punching out a bunch of comments in a row.

Definitely a great chapter to highlight a sick day with. I don't know if it was the cold making my nose all sniffly, though...

    34. "I was stunned at the very first moment as SCOOTALOO was blasted into the past as an half echo of a time goddess. This I did not have any knowledge what so ever of a copper colored alicorn, as well as being god from the past. I give credit for that event as it caught me off-guard. I was amazed, speaking of time travel, was a wave ride all to itself. My visual cinema went word for word as i began to think that SCOOTALOO blew her chance to speak with the princes. The emotions, the panic, the prison held me down "like an anvil over a stump". The only part of this chapter was the final paragraph where SCOOTALOO goes straight to the old club house after retrieving a long dead head of a friend. The resulting visit which triggered a tear jerking and humorous or "bitter-sweet" memory of her lost child hood. I could not help but wish I could have done something to help prevent the terrible blight that befell the world. finally I give kudos for the clever bit of putting EQUESTRIA DAILY into the memory therefore I award chapter six a 5.57 star. I will give further word on my next critic after reading chapter seven."

    40. My Gosh, this has to be the greatest thing my eyes have ever beheld.

      500,000+ word epic with ponies!!!!

      And its only halfway done!!!

Seriously, this work is incredible and so professional. More text than all of the harry potter books combined and i think i have seen 2 maybe three typos.

I wager that this story is one of the deepest things I will ever read. I am pretty philosophical at times but there are many parts so incredibly out of this world that they just drift over my head.

This is truely a master piece and should be placed in same celestia-teir status that FoE and Past Sins have been given.

Is underratedness is truely a crime.

    44. Just as a piece of info to all you ponies eagerly awaiting further chapters of End of Ponies:

Imagine this were a series of novels with each arc being a novel. Many, many authors space their novels 3 months to a year apart. Now, these are published stories that follow certain rules, but there's another consideration entirely: the average paperback novel is under 100k words and we've gotten over 5 times that already since October. October! And we've gotten so much since then.

Updates will come when they're ready for the masses, and you'll all be glad you waited for them to be ready. SS&E does a tremendous job working with us reviewers and I'm having a lot of fun helping shape--in my small part--this story.

Also, for any ponies who have been at all interested or following me, I will have a re-recorded and edited chapter 1 audio by the end of February, and I hope to have the entire first arc available by mid-March.

If anyone wants to lend a hoof on Mane-6 voices, a Russian accent for Brucie, or any of the other character, send me an email at warden(dot)pony(at)gmail with some kind of audio sample link and what you'd be willing to do. I'll be compiling scripts by character for the entire arc, and more depending on how many of you are interested, by the end of February. I would promise these earlier, but I've got an extremely busy month already so I'm budgeting these far enough out that I can meet the commitments.

Now that my comment is getting so long that I've lost track of it, I'll stop. -Warden

    48. Wow, you're quite a writer. This is the kind of work that clearly transcends the "fanfic" tag. Insightful, well-written, and full of engaging and well-drawn OCs. Just finished the Pinkie arc (which I could not stop reading!)... not only did it emotionally wrench me all over the shop - in a good way - but Pinkie's dialogue was FANTASTIC! It is not often that a writer can manage both dark, tragic aspects and sharp, beaming humour, and even less common is making both elements feel organically part of the same world.

I can't wait for the next installment. Brilliant stuff. Thank you!

    54. Well... I just finished reading to the end of Pinkie's Arc. I started this story about two weeks ago, and I am loving every minute of it. Aside from the... creative... use of adverbs by the author, the writing is brilliant. Poetic to a fault, and every inch of it oozes with this strange philosophical twang.

The length is mind boggling. This story, properly told, is at this point half through. That is not taking into consideration actual word count; rather a simple statement of the logical progression- AJ, FS, PP, and so on.

The story itself is beautiful. The post-apocalyptic genre is a tough nut to crack, and even tougher to tell well; and by bridging (so successfully, mind you) the post cataclysmic with that which came before, within the experiences of a single character, you've not only told it well, you have exceeded the genres own possibilities. You've crafted an alien setting that is completely and totally relatable. You have every reason to be extremely proud of what you have created. Thank you.

I look forward to what's next!

      Falls asleep on the job

      And how can we win
      When fools can be kings
      Don't waste your time
      Or time will waste you

No one's gonna take me alive
The time has come to make things right
You and I must fight for our rights
You and I must fight to survive

    57. SIX STARS WHOOOO!!!! about time!!!

      ReplyDelete
    58. I keep hearing how praised this fanfiction is. I'm about to give it a try although its sheer size kinda scares me :P
Anyways, one thing. I really REALLY can't deal with depressing pony stories. Not "My Little Dashie" depressing but grim-depressing.

I had no such problem with anything before and most of the time I easily read and enjoy any sort of story, but death and depression in my beloved Equestria is something my mind just can't digest. Ruins my mood for days. Unless it's somwhow resolved in the story arc. Happy end or such.

So keeping the above written in mind, could anypony tell me if this is a story for me?

    59. I saw this and immediately thought of this story.

      For hope.

    60. Wow, that reveal at the end of "P for Pinkdetta" was the best thing ever. I didn't see it coming at all! And yet there was so much foreshadowing that just didn't click with me until it actually happened, like Pinkie's paper airplanes always popping up.

Well, I've still got two chapters left! *goes back to reading*

      ReplyDelete
    61. What's the point of it being a fanfiction when it doesn't concern ANY of the characters in the actual show at all?? The only similarity this has to the show is ponies.

    62. @CaptainSeacup
Kind sir, there is quite a market for OC-only stories, but this is not one. If you have yet to realize how this ties into the canon characters, then I will toss two spoilers your way.

1: The last pony is none other than Scootaloo.

2: The story centers about time travel, visiting the mane 6 specifically.

I hope you continue with the story, and it changes your opinion.

    63. I need this story to continue. He went on break in January and the story is now in hiatus.

This is one of few stories I'm following and I've finally caught up. This took so much time and I'm so invested now, time and enthusiasm-wise.

I'd like to hear that he's working on it again, but as of March 15th there's not any sign of that. He's got the latest arc written but apparently it needs heavy revisions and rewriting and hacking. It numbers in 200,000 words while what we have so far is half a million.

      SS&E, I'm still eagerly waiting!

      ReplyDelete
    64. Well, the story soon would be longer than infamous "Song of Ice and Fire" (LOL!) and for one, I'm completely OK with this.
      Short Skirts never disappoints.
Keep on writing this awesome fic. ...And... PEOPLE, Y U NO RATE THIS 6 STAR ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)

      ReplyDelete
    65. The newest arc is back into production. The audio project is just about on its way, (Pinkie Pie arc first.) Things are coming. We may even be able to convince Skirts to post the new chapters one at a time instead of all in an arc. Stay posted friends.

    66. *jaw drop*

      wow I didn't notice this grew so fast! gosh I didn't think I'd end up so far behind >< well only 20 chapters behind... No problem, right? ^^;;

fffffffffffffffffffff how did I forget about this one why isn't it on my list! one doesn't simple LOSE track of a 6 star story like this! >-<

      ReplyDelete
    67. Can anyone tell me the qualification of a 6 star story? I've been following End of Ponies since the first arc came out, and for the life of me I still cannot fathom why it lacks a 6 star rating, while other works with for less content, far less quality, and far lower ratings have somehow made the cut...

I've read my fair share of epics, and know my way around what makes a good story; and I can honestly say this is one of the greatest, most intriguing stories I've ever read. Yeah, sure, I'm biased by the pony aspect giving me more attachment to the characters then any other random novel series, and the story itself isn't perfect, but nonetheless, this is still something I'd literally consider paying for a printed copy of.

All this to say is: what does it take to have this revised into the 6 star category? Tell me who I need to email about this issue, because so many people filter for just those, and End of Ponies absolutely deserves to be listed among the best of the best.

    68. When is next Chapter!?!?!?!?!?!!?

    69. I am speechless. Pinkie Pie is my favorite character. I love you Author. Please dont stop spewing magical goodness out of your golden brain!

As far as I can tell it is 6-star, and has been for a while.

This is so incredibly long. So incredibly long. The attention to detail is intense and the side threads and so numerous, it makes the story arc seem like it's dragging out forever, yet everthing was a necessary part of the whole; every single word was, if you'll pardon the pun, in perfect harmony.

There was nearly nothing out of place. Scootaloo seems to clash with the mane 6 by becoming their antipodes, but I guess that's what she meant when she was going to bring "harmony". This is really masterful writing.

    71. @Luminous
Actually, the same day I posted that I also posted it in it's main thread on ponychan, and Vimbert pulled some strings to have it reevaluated, after which it became a 6 star story =)

      @Silva
And to anyone else who doesn't go there, here's the update on EoP (since you guys deserve an explanation too). Short_Skirts_and_Explosions was working on the newest arc (Petra), finished it, then after some prereading they decided it needed a rewrite, so he took a break for a few weeks and then started back up on it. He hit another bump few chapters in though and decided another longer break was in order to get the plan straight. In the meantime, he's also been writing Background Pony (which is also good, so check it out). So yeah, no update yet on the next arc, but SS&E is taking a well deserved break to ensure the story stays awesome.

      TL;DR
EoP is on hiatus for the moment.

    74. I just love this story, its sad and yet happy at the same time! I can't wait to read more if there is any :)

      ReplyDelete
    75. If you want more while you wait, PropMaster has written an EOP side story which has now become officially endorsed by SS&E as part of the canon. It's called "Red Wings" on FIMFiction, so check it out here: http://www.fimfiction.net/story/33177/Red-Wings

    76. And it seems like it already made it's way to EQD now ^_^

    77. I finally got up the courage to start this up. I just finished chapter 6, and let me say...

It has been a long time since I've ever had to stop and take a break from reading something.

      ReplyDelete
    78. Found this novel recently, and now it has captivated me... Now i have heap of chapters to read... Good novel to kill some boring school holiday...

    79. I saw an orange pony, With purple eyes, And wings, It is not scootaloo. Wat

      ReplyDelete
    80. @hillel Wait, I saw the cover art and the fan art, Are they different ponies or are those eyes actually orange? They look purple. I am so confused.

      ReplyDelete
    81. I can't remember how I stumbled onto this story. But I saw the title, and it caught my attention.

Then I read the description, and was curious who the last pony was, and who the old companion was.

So I skimmed the first few chapters trying to find out. But before long, I was doing less skimming and more reading.

And now I've read the whole thing, barring some parts of the first few chapters.

It is so sad at times, and so joyous in others, that it actually hurts to read it - I had to take a week break after the Fluttershy arc.

And, yet, somehow, I JUST WANT MORE!!

      ReplyDelete
    82. When is the next chapter coming out? I really got interested on this story and I want to know how it ends. Please, PLEEEAAAASE update soon.

    83. Next Chapters are coming out sometime around October is what I remember reading.

    84. So um is "End of ponies" finished? because i havent seen an update for it in like 5 months and it doesnt seem like the story finished becasue they never found out how to fix equestria or what caused the fall.

      ReplyDelete
    85. @Rolf Sunde
End of Ponies is nowhere near done. It will return, though. If you want your fix of post-apocalypse wasteland action, red wings is the official side story to end of ponies.

      ReplyDelete
    86. It's been updated! Should show up here in the next few days, but go check it out on FiMFiction until then: http://www.fimfiction.net/story/1571/the-end-of-ponies
