• Time/RocketBoom Both Report on the Brony Craze

It looks like Time Magazine is jumping on the brony bandwagon, primarily just reporting on the Wired article.  It's still pretty interesting to see all of these major news channels baffled at the community as a whole.  Good work everyone! We are slowly taking over the internet.

Once we hit a certain threshold, Hasbro's toy department might finally see us as a viable market.   Right now we are probably still a bit too small, but every single website that reports on the fandom is a step in the right direction.

You can find that article below!

    Time Magazine's Brony Article

Along with this, Rocketboom over on youtube has also created a small shout out to bronies.  It's a pretty good watch! I'll let it speak for itself after the break.

      That was fun to read.

also why is Time saying we troll boards? We don't do that. We have our own board and 4 chan is more accepting now.

    4. Reading/watching now, & hoping for the best. I tend to rage easily when people report false information...

      ReplyDelete
    5. Either the writer of this article has no idea what "trolling" means, or he just didn't care about getting the facts right.

    6. Great article, i think it does us bronys justice! I mean it could be alot worse..!?

    7. Good article.

Also; I don't think they mean "trolling" in the modern 1337 version but rather the traditional "perusing" or going to/frequenting/engaging.

    9. I found the Rocketboom clip to be a much better piece, than the article by Time, which seemed to be more of a kneejerk, "Hey, Wired just did an article, we better try to do something about it too" kind of thing.

In just a little over a minute, Rocketboom gave people with no idea about what was happening a great foundation of the basic facts, and also gave their own take an the end as to why what they are reporting is something others should care. This, not the 'me too!' reporting of the Time article, is what will win over others. Well done Rocketboom!

    11. That video was actually incredibly entertianing.

eugh, if I had cartoon network I'd watch adventure time... sadface.

    12. TIME Magazine writes awkward report on what another more dedicated news site said about something they don't understand.

      This is my surprised face.

    13. Inb4 female bronies complain about lack of representation

Actually, it's been a few minutes, some probably already have. Girls, the reason people mention the adult males is because it's the largest and most shocking aspect of the fandom. People wanna get the bigger parts out of the way first. While it's not fair to mention it, many people probably do assume that the bridges between male, female, kid, and adult are all filled in this fandom.

That, and the "bro" in brony heavily implies masculinity.

    15. Add Seattle PI (what does the PI even stand for? is it like Magnum PI?) to the list, too:

    17. Wired article was really well made. Lots of research seemed to be put in. It looks like it was almost written by a brony.

    18. no haters is the comments? darn. there's nothing quite as satisfying as seeing haters getting completely buried under mountains of love and tolerance. ...cmon haters! we've got enough friendship for errybody!!

      ReplyDelete
    19. I kinda dislike how Time implies that this pony thing is merely the latest "bro obsession." I surely don't identify myself as a "bro," and neither does a large majority of the fandom.

      Rocketboom's bit is neat, though.

I think PI stands for post-intelligencer or something.

Anyways, good article, and fun video.

Part of knowyourmeme, last I checked. They usually fail miserably when it comes to knowing their meme's.

    25. This makes me stand tall and be proud! Especially when a customers 9 yr old daughter asks me about the show ( like today while i was working a mother came thru with her daughter in the truck . . . They seemed to be argueing about the show . . . . lol I was there chuckling, it was about the cutie mark crusaders . . . . LOL the show stoppers episode. THey were agrueing, i was wearing my luna signet shirt, one shouted out to me. HEY MR who sung the cutie song . . . At first i was like huh . . . their mom was like STOP IT he dont know. I was like . . well sweetie belle should have sung it but it was scootaloo . . The look on their moms face was priceless . . . She was like THANK YOU, they have been argueing about that the whole ride. I just couldnt do anything but laugh .

I think it's hilarious how passive-aggressive the author sounds in this article.

They're the guys that used to do KnowYourMeme videos.

You might care because they're a YouTube channel with over 130,000 potential converts to the herd. Also, it's MLP:FiM coverage that doesn't condescend to us like that garbage Time Magazine article.

      Just sayin'...

    30. The video report was definitely more likable. The newsfeed one was pretty much just a repost of the wired one. Also, I can't help but read those back to myself in a sarcastic 'look how weird these guys are and how clever we are talking about it' tone.

@Doc Steedly: That is pure win

I jelly. I've yet to have an IRL pony encounter.

      ReplyDelete
    32. I really liked the rocketboom video, though I do wish they didn't play that twinkly baby music in the background while giving the premise of the show. After all, Faust herself stated that one of her goals as producer would be to elevate the show from its longstanding legacy with more dynamic characters and stories.

Eh well, one triumph at a time.

We might not be completely beyond the franchise's past female-oriented vibe, but at least the quantitative introduction of the Brony phenomenon is gaining credence.

    33. lauren wasn't the director of PPG's though

    34. Closest I've had to an IRL pony encounter is a little girl that came through my ticket line that had the twilight sparkle hair stripes. I'd have said something, but it seemed like it would have been creepy.

      ReplyDelete
    35. The voutube bit was nifty, can't say I care much for the times article. I am a brony, not a bro! The me-too description of the style of reporting was spot on.

      ReplyDelete
    36. @AnonymousShoulda called her Twighlight Sparkle. Probably would've made her day. :/

    37. The Time Magazine article really says very little. The Rocketboom video was much more informative.

I'm not surprised by this, I've figured out a while ago that traditional media organizations tend to be inaccurate, biased, and generally not very good. It's just that you tend to know less than them on what they're reporting on and can't tell. If you ever watch a report of theirs on a topic that you are quite knowledgeable in, you'll see how bad they are.

I'm glad traditional media is dying to the Internet.

      ReplyDelete
    38. @Anonymous
I have to agree on that. The rocketboom video was much better, and it wasn't in the pointless, dry "we don't really know what this is but since Wired did one guess we have to as well" -style the Time article was.

I think it has been years since I last actually read a physical-form newspaper.

    39. Welcome to media exposure, bronies.

Other fandoms have had it worse but you are doing amazingly so far.

      ReplyDelete
    40. Every time I see a post like this, I tear up in joy ^-^

      ReplyDelete
    41. Btw, I do think Times has no idea WHY the show is popular and I think the reason is that we, bronies don't know either.

I myself tried to word it many times, but failed.

Someone just has to take the time and watch the show and feel it, you can't really explain why MLP is so loveable.

      ReplyDelete
    42. @Naahdude
Traditional media still haven't wrapped their head around Internet terminology.

Rocketboom on the other hand just got 20% cooler.

    43. It's funny to me that programs and youtube videos meant to be comical often do better research on their reporting than 'real' news sources.

      ReplyDelete
    44. I can just see the manestream media completely taking this all wrong and turning it into a sick parody of what us bronies are all about, kinda worries me. Guess we all gonna have to stick to the love and tolerance, least we be parasprited to death by neighsayers!
