We don't really post the 4chan news much anymore, but I figured the old /co/ folks that still visit (all 20 of you), and the /b/ronies would be thrilled to see this new addition to the armada of boards over at what is essentially the birthplace of pony on the internet.
It looks like they are either sincerely rolling with this, or trapping everyone for a massive pony ban. Either way, we are apparently relevant in the eyes of overlord Moot.

I like looking at /co/ pony threads. I read ponychan as well and they're pretty much like protestants and catholics. They take the fandom in very different ways. The so-called ideal of "love and tolerance" is scoffed at on 4chan and they tend to have a sarcastic and cynical view of the fandom in general, while ponychan is a lot more kinder and are more in line with the show's message.

I have been there before, and while parts of the board are fun and decent, I'd say a high traffic section of the board (referring to /b/) is terrible, and filled with things that will give you nightmares for years to come. I'm not exaggerating, either. It's pretty bad.

ReplyDeleteNo sugarcube, we've found a good place of our own, I think. I for one don't feel the need to go back to that hive of scum and villainy; it leaves a haze of despair and anger on the minds it touches.
Even if legit, we really don't need it. The rainboom led us here and even considering Derpygeddon, it'll be a home for us for a while yet. We have EqD, we have Reddit, we have Ponychan, and for better or worse, we have each other. This is a pretty good life considering.

ReplyDeleteNothing's gonna change on my end, except I may start lurking the /mlp/ board to just see how it settles. If it's a trap, it doesn't matter, because I now have access to dozens of pony sites that didn't exist after I left 4chan a year ago.
That's probably what a lot of us are just gonna do. Visit the /mlp/ board out of curiosity, perhaps take a seat and participate in discussion, but otherwise not treat it like home and not spend a lot of time there.

one on /co/, or comics and cartoons board (where this whole thing was born)
and one on /b/, our random board.
/co/ ponies discuss the show exclusively, and they're pretty snarky and ironic about it as people have mentioned.
/b/ ponies are basically a group of friends who like to post pony pictures and flirt with each other, but that's it.
Combining these two fanbases is like combining water and grease,
even IF this whole thing isn't a massive trap.

While it may be easy to avoid most of the NSFW stuff, I would rather not have to deal with the landmines and booby-traps just to get a couple of quick laughs. I like not needing to have brain bleach at the ready in case of a nasty surprise.

ReplyDeleteI have been to 4chan at one point in my life, and the experience was not pleasant because the crazy stuff did show up in several places. The first time or two, maybe mods were slow, but it didn't happen just a couple of times, it happened pretty consistently. So I decided to stay away from the site because I don't want to view that stuff at all if I can help it. Things may have changed since back then, but I don't care to find out either.
I don't think this will unite the scattered clans. I don't think this will end the trolling. I don't think anything will change because of this, and I doubt that many will even care. But simply the fact that there is now a /mlp/ board on 4chan fills me with some indescribable happiness.

The general reaction on the board seems to be general anger. Anger by the bronies for being lumped in with the seedier fans and the show haters are being drawn in like moths to the flame bringing their anger with them. How long till it all blows?

Just checked it out. That was the first time I've ever been on 4chan. Scrolled through one page. I've seldom come across such an impressive collection of stupid in one place. Why would I want to visit a pony site with such rampant animosity when all awesome pony stuff tends to end up here anyway.

If you have such a problem with EqD and equate it with 4chan, by all means, go live there and enjoy the lulz. I don't know how many have seen the worst that 4chan is capable of... it can be far worse on an average day than we were at our worst.
The most insidious part of 4chan though is that it poisons your soul slowly over time as you become numb to all the various manifest lurking horrors and tiny bloodsucking creepy-crawlies that regularly pop up in threads. Then one day you realize you don't like who you've become. True story, eeyup.

ReplyDeleteEeyup. That's why I left. I started becoming desensitized to the behavior that was so commonplace there, and it became "normal". I finally got away from there, and I have no desire to go back. They could offer free pony prizes and I wouldn't go back. I cherish my soul.
That may sound overly dramatic, but really, you do get used to the horrible things that appear, and the trashy behavior, and it becomes normal, and you adjust, but it's not good for you. Everypony is free to do what they like, but it's not the much touted place of free thought and creativity that has become it's reputation.
EqD, Ponychan, all the nice little pony fora, those places are better for everypony to enjoy the show, to enjoy the community. Just because one comes from ooze does not mean one should return to it so readily.
Not really interested in checking out this board... 4chan generally leaves me feeling dead inside, quite honestly. Mind you, moot may be sincere. I'd like to think so. It's some of 4chan denizens that are the problem, as witnessed by some of the posts here. Of course not ALL of the 4chan folks are bad, but there are enough bad apples to spoil the bunch for me.

Please guys... Don't think all of 4chan is as bad a /b/. It's not. Most of it is actually entertaining without being full of porn and stupidity and the trolls are either clever or too dumb to be taken seriously (which is clever in its own way).

ReplyDeleteYeah, bronies were born in 4chan... a long, long time ago. Since then there's been several generations of new bronies who have never been to 4chan nor do they ever want to.
It's kind of like saying how the US was founded by England. Old history.
Personally, I don't have anything specific against 4chan -- I just don't want ponies to be associated with it anymore. To me, ponies are all about love and positivity, while 4chan is all about hate and ignorance. They just don't mix.

ReplyDeleteThis fandom was at it's BEST when we were pretty much just on 4chan, there was almost no drama or infighting and there wasn't this crazy twisted version of "love and tolerance" back then it was treated as the joke that it was, a way to deter trolls by not responding angrily.
Back then this fandom wasn't chock full of insane r34 ether.

The closest association I have to 4chan is looking around the archives of /tg/ (nice community there, once turned a picture of Shadow of the Colossus into a discussion of a setting where people live on the backs of giants.), so...indifference is bliss.

ReplyDeleteIndeed. Not all of 4chan is like /b/. A lot of people not real familiar with the rest of the site don't realize that though. But there's even intelligent discussions and some pretty smart people in some areas. It's like a city. There's bad and good areas in it.
4chan has a certain chaotic nature that it not only indulges in, but encourages. There's nothing wrong with its form of expression regardless of how extreme it gets, but it is not a site I could ever take seriously.

Joey: I discovered the wonders of pony thanks to 4chan. In the chaotic mess of 4chan I saw people posting reaction images of the show. I ignored them for a few weeks then talked myself into watching the show.

ReplyDeleteI am happy about this, but also weary. However, 4chan is a hostile place only to those who consider it so. I never considered it hostile, so I am really okay with this. Ponies have a board for their own now. I think it's a good way to contain the endless traffic of pony and pony threads that invade other boards in a daily basis.

Those assorted pockets of people who noticed a cartoon airing on The Hub. They individually, each as people, no matter the site they were posting on, might have discovered a TV show that a lot of other decent people were being attracted to AS WELL..... But 4CHAN as a combined, administered collective "created" bronies? NO. NO. NEVER DID. Untrue.
The fact of the matter is, 4Chan has about as much legitimate claim to the "brony" movement as Amid Amdi from Cartoon Brew does.... You know... the guy also claims he created bronies because he insulted us and the show and believes he convinced us to "band together" against him, first.
Which is to say that Amid is full of crap, and 4Chan and especially moot, are also full of crap.
4Chan can sit here and now claim to have invented bronies because some people saw the show while posting on that awful site? Ok. But if I was eating at a McDonalds and saw a rainbow outside the window, it doesn't mean that McDonalds created that rainbow outside.
Not to mention that 4Chan wouldn't have any claim to make for the brony phenomenon even if they DIDN'T actively shun and ban everyone for liking the show, immediately after. It just makes them sound like even more of a hypocritical assortment of attention whoring douchebags trying to lay false claims to something that as an entity, they had precisely zero to ever do with from minute one.

meh. 4chan has good elements - /b/ is the real hellpit to which no one should go. there's a surprising degree of community elsewhere, though, especially on some of the slower, more cloistered boards (at least in my experience) - maybe /mlp/ could become like that?

This is of enormous significance, considering our origins there a year and a half ago.
I remember browsing those threads on /co/ and /b/. Good times. Until they came down on us with the banhammer at least.
I don't use 4Chan, but I am aware that they did a Trap Board in the past in which anyone who posted on it got a Permanant Ban, that was on April Fool's Day last time, but I'd advise caution if you are a 4Chan regular.
