Greetings, conscripts! Does the evening find you well? Did you put on your beret like I asked you to? No? Twenty demerits! This is not a game, you know!
Now, for these games, you're going to need to remember the rules of engagement. You kept your pamphlets, right? Well just in case, here they are again. To make this even simpler, here (Currently Down!) is your submission site. If you're having problems, your contact frequency is [email protected]. Feeling lost? Here's some great tutorials from your friends in the original ATG alumni. Get it? Got it? Good!
Day One: Welcome To Camp, Soldier!
Today has been a whirlwind affair, to say the least. You're not quite sure how you got here, or indeed where here is, but for the moment you don't have time to think about it. There are ponies, ponies everywhere, scrambling about or doing push ups or patrolling about and forcing others into lines. Also, you have hooves... Huh. As you stand there trying to get your bearings, you are approached by a gray pegasus clad in ornate golden armor. She looks you up with one eye, and down with the other. After a long pause, she nods her head in something not unlike approval.
"All right," she says with a voice that is entirely too adorable for battle hardened visage she's been keeping to this point, "I won't lie. Last time we held these games, the griffons beat us into the ground so hard we found potatoes. They haven't let us live it down since. But now? Now that all stops, thanks to all of you. I bet you have a lot of questions, and rest assured you will get answers. Eventually. Probably.... Maybe."
"Uh... excuse me." Calls a pony somewhere to your left.
"What? No time! Follow me, all of you. It's time to get you dressed."
Assignment: Draw a pony wearing armor or a uniform.
Pencils up.

@Onix
ReplyDeleteThat is...amazing. Suddenly self conscious about mine xD
This is my entry to it: http://lazarus-firenze.deviantart.com/#/d4lx1bf
ReplyDelete@Onix
ReplyDeleteThat's not godawful. But I do see how much it can be better. I'm glad I'm not the only one that decided to use a uniform, rather than an armored suit. Mine isn't too great either. My art skills are getting rusty lately.
My submission
What do I do if the site is down?!?
ReplyDeleteWah!
I'm just doing this for the fun of it. I'm no newbie, but a little practice never hurts, right?
I'd follow Derpy into battle any day!
ReplyDeleteHere's my entry: http://fav.me/d4ly4uc (<<how do I use HTML for this?)
ReplyDeleteHope this is good enough! (I only do vectors.)
And one question: When would the due date be for Central Standard? I have a tab for the UTC -8, but this would help for convenience.
@Midnight-Dragon15
ReplyDeleteContest time (PST / UTC -8) is two hours behind Central time, so Midnight is your local time deadline.
To everyone talking about how bad your art is: Don't! Please, please don't! It's one thing to recognize specific flaws and areas you need to work on, but don't put yourself down needlessly.
For one thing, if you trash your own art, and it's 'better' than someone else's submission that they've worked hard on, you're trashing *their* work as well!
Sure, some contributors this week are going to be experienced artists with stunning stuff, but the whole *point* of this is that everyone gets to play at their own skill and comfort level and participate in creation. So, if you're a new artist (or a rusty artist picking up a pencil / stylus for the first time in ages) take this chance to do your best, and be *proud* of your best, because you're now a creator!
Think of how many people visit this site daily, and consider how *few* of them are willing to step up and produce *anything* of their own. Doing so takes guts and imagination, and if you're willing to step up as a brand new artist and put your initial forays on display during this event, you've got that in spades. The rest is just practice and a bit of technical learning, which comes with time.
So, again, regardless of whether you sat on the artists panel at Bronycon last Saturday or you've never sketched a pony in your life - Step up, be proud, and own your work as a contributing member of this awesome community.
@Rekiara
ReplyDeleteOh, no one has said anything bad about it, I've just never posted anything here! (First time and all that.)
But thanks for the clear-up on time. Midnight makes it so much easier to work with.
@Rekiara
ReplyDeleteLol, I'm not putting myself or anyone else down. I'm basically saying that I can do better than what I've posted. It's supposed to give myself more confidence to do better for my next work.
Besides, this event is supposed to help artists improve upon their rusted skills, yes? I figured it was a good opportunity to get my shitty drawings out of the way. =P
@Onix
ReplyDeleteGood job, soldier!
@Rekiara
ReplyDeleteTrust me, I love every last post cause everyone has a different style.
Ugh, I just had a huge stroke of inspiration to make an epic comic series of the events of this mock war, but the last time I ever made a piece of art was when I was young enough to be told that it's "fine" and hung up on the fridge for a week.
ReplyDeleteAt best, I'm going to miss the deadline. It's even more likely that I'll just quit.
@AchingScaphoid
ReplyDeleteSounds like it would be good, go for it! Thats what this is all about right?
Submitted my, uhh... submission :|
ReplyDeleteOpted for "uniform" as I saw it as easier, and after all, some gas mask wearing pegasus has to go do recon :3
@Rekiara
ReplyDeleteForgive me for being cynical, but if/when I submit something that is worse than what 99% of submitters manage, if not more, is it really something to be proud of?
So far, since the topic went up late last night, I've had four or five ideas I've scrapped because the concepts seemed cliched and overdone (and a couple more since, permissible or not, I'm not sure if OCs are a good idea) and a few drawings I've crumpled the paper up on because I couldn't get the look right and drew and erased until the paper was just a big gray smudge. Even if I knew how to shade I can't even get the lines to stay straight or properly curved.
Yes, if I submit something, I've technically "succeeded," but if I get mistaken for a grade-schooler in the process should I still be proud of it?
*sigh* Bronies have crashed yet another site.
ReplyDeleteSo, site still down... blood and damnation!
ReplyDeleteWell, I've sent mine in, it's not great but it's my first time trying to draw a pony and trying to draw on a tablet. Just please don't chase me out with pitchforks after it.
ReplyDelete@PerilousPrinny
ReplyDeletelol, of course not. Every artist thinks their own stuff sucks, no matter how good it may actually look.
If anyone's feeling hesitant, go check out the gallery from the very first Artist Training Grounds here: http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/05/newbie-artist-training-grounds-day-2.html
There's a wide variety of drawings from "absolute beginner" to "godlike". The best advice I can give to any beginning artist is to try not to focus on the "godlike" stuff. Just keep drawing, and don't try to hold yourself to any quality standard -- if you fret about putting out garbage then you'll just get discouraged and give up. Remember what Lauren Faust said - "Imagine you have several thousand crappy drawings you have to get out of your system before your any good and try your damnedest to get those crappy drawings out as fast as you can." Use the Artist Training Ground as an outlet for your crappy drawings. That's what it's there for!
Can the pictures be coloured or is it sketches only?
ReplyDeleteHmmm I finally finish and the submission link is down! It's 3am here, so probably by the time I wake up it'll be too late to submit :(

ReplyDeleteGaze upon my lack of skill!
@Kevster
ReplyDelete...Nah, I'm out. I tried making a uniform in Paint.net but didn't even finish the helmet before I lost my motivation. I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't count as a "drawing" anyway.
(edit: replied to wrong post)
@PerilousPrinny
ReplyDeleteTaken from the original NATG post last summer:
"Why?
This event is about learning how to draw. If you start off with stick figures, that's perfectly fine. The only way artists improve, is by actually doing it. Everyone has the ability. Some are more naturally talented than others... but that doesn't mean you can't acquire it."
This event isn't about crafting breathtaking artwork. It's about improving yourself as an artist. Self-improvement, in any area of life, is something to be proud of. So if your 3rd grade drawings are better than the 2nd grade work you did yesterday; and tomorrow, you're at a 5th grade level, then yes. Be proud.
If you're submitting half-effort work purely for the sake of saying you submitted, then maybe not. I still contend that there is something intrinsically valuable in the act of creation; but churning out half effort work just to say you did *does* miss out on the purpose of the event. It's about doing your best (within the time and theme limitations, of course) and pushing that envelope a bit farther out each day.
It may not seem it from these posts, but I'm not actually part of the 'self esteem' 'be proud of your mediocrity' bandwagon. I firmly believe that greatness is something to strive for, there are winners and losers and that accepting mediocrity is the ultimate self-failure.
In this specific instance, though, if your current mediocrity is only a step on the path to improving yourself (and you're actively seeking to follow that path); then yes, it's fair to own it and be proud. Take pride in yourself, for seeking to improve, if you can't take pride in the actual work you've made so far.
If anyone wants to see mine, here ya go:
ReplyDeletehttp://grubbustheunclean.deviantart.com/art/Armor-278752342
I could actually use some recommendations on vectoring this, I just couldn't get a line weight that I liked.
I just sent in mine. It's my first time doing one of these. I'm excited. :D

ReplyDelete@Grubbus

ReplyDelete@Sanguinity

I'm not sure how what to do since the submission site is down, but here's my drawing thing anyways. http://killsilver.deviantart.com/#/d4lyohj
ReplyDeleteo-o I looked at a lot of you guys' pictures, and a lot of them are pretty good. Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteJust submitted mine as well. Actually an improvement from my other works as it doesn't use any direct reference... I actually feel kinda proud of it. x3
http://dragon51116.deviantart.com/art/Armored-Symphon-278760817
Just submitted mine. This is only the second piece of pony art I've done, and I don't really draw that much. I looked at a still from the show for reference. Here it is if anypony want to see it.
ReplyDeletehttp://myboyj.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d4lyq3b

ReplyDeleteI should be doing homework right now. But oh well. http://mickeysu.deviantart.com/art/ATG-day-1-Draw-a-pony-in-armor-278761619
ReplyDeleteWell, sent mine. It was a terrible rushed job and I feel bad but my timezone screws me over.
ReplyDelete's here, if anyone is interested: http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/5993/chemicalwarmare.png
You guys do know there's still over 2 or 3 hours left, right? o-o Some of you are rushing when you have time to make finishing touches~
ReplyDeleteWho Do I send mine to?
ReplyDeleteplease help.
Sent my little pony in. Gaaah I'm afraid its not good enough! Well whats done is done I guess..Pvt.Dusty Fortune Siege Division reporting for duty!
ReplyDelete@DustyFortune
ReplyDeleteMan other ponies are looking really great. Might as well post mine up here as well if anyone wants to take a look.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c222/ChocoboBoy/PrivateFortune.jpg
@Choklet
ReplyDeleteIn the first post for the Artist Training Grounds, phoe said to send it to her if there are any problems.
[email protected]
Seems I might as well post my entry as well. I only hope they find use of his talents on the battlefield.
ReplyDeletehttp://twinquasars.deviantart.com/#/d4lxbul
sent to phoe! I hope it actually shows up!
ReplyDeleteBox armor is ok, right?
Annnnd sent. If anyone -for some odd reason- wants to take a look:
ReplyDeletehttp://dragon51116.deviantart.com/art/Armored-Symphon-278760817
(if it looks like the armor is rushed and tacked on thats because it is.) Now if youll excuse me, I have to go huddle in a corner and/or have nightmares about crowds of anonymous faces laughing at me.
Well, here's my shot at it...
ReplyDeletehttp://walrusinc.deviantart.com/#/d4lz2rw
More of a uniform then something you'd see in battle.
To be honest, it isn't *quite* in keeping with the theme of the day, but it is, technically, a pony wearing a uniform:
ReplyDeletehttp://awh-tokyo.deviantart.com/#/d4lxjs5
(I already mailed it in but am sharing here as well)
Since everpony else is sharing, here's mine!!!
ReplyDeletehttp://fav.me/d4ly7kn
alright, I'll join the herd.
ReplyDeleteComments always welcome.
http://camilove.deviantart.com/art/Royal-Guard-Luna-278723879
I submitted mine just now, and since sharing is caring, here it is http://sanguinepony.deviantart.com/art/Sanguine-the-Battle-Medic-278775222.
ReplyDeleteIt's a battle medic, because those are important in war apparently. I'm also really bad at drawing at the moment, but I'm hoping that practice makes perfect (or at least passable) art.
I sent my pic via email as well...
ReplyDelete...and then Phoe's email exploded...
...twice.
Okay, I drew a pony:
ReplyDeletehttp://camelopardalis.deviantart.com/#/d4ly93a
Sent mine in. If anyone wants to see it here's a link: http://neonshi.deviantart.com/art/Mock-War-day-1-278773691?q=gallery%3Aneonshi&qo=0
ReplyDeleteJust submitted through the email.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first time I've actually tried vectoring (vectoring is really all I'm decent at) a pony, a tad more difficult than I expected but I think it turned out okay, for a first timer at least.
Mine:
ReplyDeletehttp://laws-jazzhands.deviantart.com/art/Not-an-artist-for-ATG-278783533
If onix can post his stuff shamelessly then I will too. Here's an adorkable twilight in the only armor that makes sense for her
ReplyDeletehttp://fav.me/d4lzawp
Here's mine!
ReplyDeletehttp://blizzardrush.deviantart.com/#/d4lzby4
hope im not too late http://fav.me/d4lz9b8
ReplyDeleteHere's my work, I'm proud of it, especially since I managed to finish it despite adrenaline wrecking my already-unsteady hand.
ReplyDeletehttp://mattatatta.deviantart.com/art/EqD-Training-Grounds-Day-1-278786563
@Sir tristan, knight of the round stable
ReplyDeleteNow all she needs is a book fort!
Well, seeing as how the website is down...
ReplyDeleteI'm going to post here
http://megumitierana.deviantart.com/art/Pony-in-Armor-278786936
Don't want to overload Phoe with another email ^^;
Once the deadline gets closer than I'll send it her way :)
@Mattatatta
ReplyDeleteShe has one... she lives in a library.
Also here's more armored ponies
http://fav.me/d4ly9kj

I emailed Phoe, but just in case, here is mine:
ReplyDeletehttp://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e244/Zorg_orc_warboss/rose-mock-war-day-1-by-ponymancer.png
My first drawing in about 6 years... I need to get a hang of using photoshop to do lines, any tips /ideas for that guys?
Here's my submission. I figure I might as well post here since everyone else is. :)
ReplyDeletehttp://steamchaserbrony.deviantart.com/#/d4lzdsf
Well, I sent mine to Phoe's email seeing how the submit site is down.
ReplyDeleteHave never drawn a pony before; haven't really drawn in general tbh.
So uhh...here's my attempt: http://fedgelovesyou.deviantart.com/art/Private-Blues-278784574
Figured this would be the time to start learning though. :)
I think I'll post here too, just on the off-chance the emails don't get through.
ReplyDeletehttp://aoshistark.deviantart.com/art/NATG-Day-1-Samus-Maren-278788171
Warning: Samus Maren is Armed and Adorable.
I recently drew a pony in armor, can I use that?
ReplyDeleteWell, here we are. Finally finished. If anyone wants to see the result:
ReplyDeletehttp://drbeak.deviantart.com/art/Pony-Soldier-278789648
Whew, that one took a while.
I'm going to post a link here just in case the email does not work. http://lemonlimeman.deviantart.com/art/Lem-and-Lim-in-Armor-278789090
ReplyDeleteyup, sight is still down. heres mine!

@Ritsuko Mithos Ikuina Fuuin
ReplyDeleteUh, hi >.> I've never posted or anything before -- just lurked. I saw the artist training grounds post and I just decided I'd go for it even though this is only the second thing I've attempted to draw in my life XD I'd really like to get mine and my Fiance's submissions in, but I don't know (or know how to find) Phoe's email. Could you (or anypony) point me in the right direction?
Thanks <3
@Ashanderhill
ReplyDelete[email protected]
you need to lurk better then. its right at the top of the page. lol
well with everyone posting links directly to there artwork (i only gave my account name before) here is mine. http://lazzyx.deviantart.com/#/d4lw8cc
ReplyDeleteScratch my last comment -- I found the email XD In the FAQ, the first place I shoulda looked. Got my email sent at 9:59 and avoided the Late Assignment Twilight Face <3
ReplyDeleteMan, I don't think I've ever drawn a pony this fast before since I usually sleep on it. If anypony's interested here's my drawing of Applejack in armor.
ReplyDeletehttp://sonicratchet.deviantart.com/#/d4lzc5b
Let me know what you guys think :)
Who needs armour? Bah, all a soldier needs is a red coat, shako, musket and bayonet!
ReplyDeletei am an alicorn will i still be able to join the army i have been stuck in the ever free forest almost all me life and i have been in fight or two before all of them i won sooo i think i might be able to help a lot
ReplyDeleteRight. I emailed my submission in also. People talk about sending them to Phoe. Does that mean just sending them to [email protected]? That's where I sent mine... but I'm newish here, so I don't know the ins and outs.
ReplyDelete
