• My Little Investigations - Engine Demo - Locations

Gabu from My Little Investigators has released another huge progress video of the game, with all sorts of new features and information on how everything is actually going to work in the finalized version.  I'm pretty sure I'm going to lose a few days to this one once it is released.

You can find the video of it after the break!

    3. I am really looking forward to this game as it is one of the most promising MLP indie games... but can it beat the short and sweet Story of the Blanks? Only time can tell.

    4. If I'm honest with myself, I've got even more anticipation for this than I do Fighting is Magic.

    6. I've never played any Ace Attorney games, but I have played other similar games, and this looks like it'll be a good few hours worth of fun when it's finished.

    7. Wow... I am soooo looking forward to this game.

I love playing detective games, and throwing ponies into it is just major bonus! :D

    8. Am I the only one looking forward to that 3D Cellshaded game about finding the thing that took Luna over more than Fighting is Magic or this? Maybe it is just because I haven't played much Fighting games and have never played an investigation game, but I have played a Adventure.

    10. This is looking great. The mouse/keyboard combination might start to annoy me though.

I'm looking forward to that enormously as well. Have you tried the demo with Pinkie?

Awesome video though, so many games to look forward to.
Seems it's time for a larger hard drive.

    14. This is a fantastic video showcasing the potential of this game, and I can't hide the fact that I'm trully excited for this.

I just hope it doesn't get too criptic in the way of mixing evidences, and that things do make sense. So far, it looks like a very logical, brainy game, and that's good!

    15. My Little Grammar Nazi notices zat you are very indecisive. Is it 'investigators', or 'investigations'?

    16. I do wonder if we will see a rival investigator in the series. It could be Trixie! Or someone better shows up in Season 2 to fill the job!

My only concern is difficulty currently. There is... a lot of places for evidence. And if the penalty bar remains in the game. That's a lot of evidence to try through if we have no clue at all what to show.

    17. Are you talking about the tile of the game? It's My Little Investigations.

Anyway, I'm SOOOO glad that people are starting to buy into this game. It really is suprising how much Gabu has done with the game engine after six weeks of work by himself! Lemme tell you that this is only the tip of the iceberg of what we got planned. Yes, we, as I am working very closely with Gabu in order to make this game happen!

Stay tuned for more info from Gabu everyone!

    18. Ghost Trick music at the end was a nice treat. Not enough people know about that awesome game from the same team.

I'm really liking how he's building the game with as few hard-coded elements as possible, so additional cases will be relatively easy to create.

    19. This looks awesome, but there is a potential issue I see:

Magic breaks mystery, as I'm sure players of a certain other murder mystery series would know. Because magic is commonplace in Equestria, crimes and mysteries that would normally be very difficult to explain can be hand-waved easily, and evidence which would be conclusive 'IRL' wouldn't be anymore.

Take the stolen jewel for example. Twilight reasoned that the door must have been opened when the thief stole the jewel, and that's how Opal got out. That isn't conclusive, because a pony with magic could simply phase the jewel through the door without opening it. That would explain why Rarity heard nobody enter her house. Opal got out another way. A lot of deductions that would be conclusive in a non-magic setting are no longer so, because it's extremely difficult to prove that magic was or wasn't used.

Similarly, a magician can simply prepare illusions or magical guises for their crimes to completely trick any potential witnesses. If they used spells to clean up any evidence they left behind, it would be an unnaturally perfect crime. Therefore, it becomes extremely difficult to trust a witness, even if they're not lying. Because it could be all an elaborate set up and nobody would ever know.

So I'm not criticizing the idea of the game. I really hope this continues, and if it finishes, then I will absolutely play it. But I hope the author knows how they're going to deal with the problems magic posses to the mystery genre.

    20. Lookin good, My Little Investigations, lookin REAL good!

Now that I'm done channeling my inner Spike, this looks like it will be an entertaining bit to play. I've never played Ace Attorney, so I'm more excited about Fighting is Magic atm, but this looks like it might be out sooner.

    21. I think some people over-think on these things. lol It's just meant to be a fun little game.

I think it's looking good. I can't wait until it's finished and we get to play it.

    24. Amazing. This and the Mane 6 fighting game are the two fan made games that I'm eagerly waiting for.

And yes, I can see the Mayor shoehorning Twilight like that into taking up the mantle of investigator.

Keep up the good work, GabuEx and co.!

There's a degree of flaw to your argument: there's nothing to suggest that unicorns can phase anything through walls. It's certainly a feat that hasn't yet been demonstrated.

Magic does undermine mystery, but you have to consider the mechanics of the magic as well. They can work perfectly if the mandates and rules of that particular magic doesn't conflict with the nature of the mystery in a realistic manner. This looks to be the case in MLP:FiM, where Magic A is Magic A.

Unicorns really only have two kinds of spells: telekinesis and an ability associated with their talent/cutie mark. Twilight's cutie mark is magic, essentially, and so she's the most magically adept pony in Equestria (outside of the Princesses, possibly). How many unicorns will have spells that can directly translate to crime? Or even indirectly, and even then, there would certainly remain some sort of link. If an object of value is stolen by means of a magical hole in the ground, logically, any pony with a cutie mark that would suggest that sort of aptitude would become a suspect.

Obviously, you brought up the matter of "phasing objects through walls" as an example, but I think the point still stands that in a universe, such as FiM, where magic is clearly defined and mostly limited in it's length and breadth, mystery and magic can integrate quite well.

Finally, some logical concessions need to be made to develop these scenarios and games. This, in effect, is largely the same case as the Ace Attorney series in general. Maybe something won't quite make sense with the added context of a magical ability like telekinesis, but it's a gap in logic that needs to be made if there is to be any way to have a coherent train of events and a playable scenario.

...anyways, I suppose I should contribute more than this. As a major, major fan of Ace Attorney, Gabu, I heartily approve. It looks fantastic, and I'm especially impressed by how well you've integrated the Ace Attorney experience into the MLP universe. From where I'm standing, the writing is superb. I really am looking forward to this project.

    28. What I've seen of just this case alone has me excited, with the misleading evidence and all. I'm hoping the final release has at least a handful of cases, or that GabuEx continues to release cases after release. This is looking insanely fun, and I'd love to lose a few days to this!

    29. I'm SO looking forward to playingVthis game. One thought: Every case has a guilty party that commited the crime, right? (No, not *that* kind of party, Pinkie!) There are very few charachters that I think would be able to commit a crime, and even if it was an accident rather than a malicious crime, why wouldn't they just confess?
I'm sure the writer(s) will find a way around this, rather than have such a limited and/or predictable cast of villains for the cases.
So, who do you think took Rarity's prized jewel? For a moment there I thought about Spike maybe wanting a snack or a little something for his secret Rarity altar. However, I dont really think of Spike actually stealing something. But I could be wrong.

Oh, you be quite surprised how Gabu and I will integrate the villains in the MLI universe. Some will be expected while others will come out of nowhere and surprise players.

Just sit back, relax, and continue to enjoy the updates. Plus, you must consider that Season 2 should add a healthy amount villains into canon.

Gabu will definitely start recruiting people for the art, music, story/dialogue advice, VA's and beta testing when he is completely done with the engine. Believe it or not, he's planning on adding some original elements to the game that will enhance the overall experience.

So, as you can tell, the game engine is still far from finished even though the core AA gameplay mechanics have been implemented. I urge you to stay patient and sign up to help with MLI when Gabu is ready. He'll be more than happy to accept help at that point. ;)

    32. One possibility for lessening the impact of magic on the mystery would be to have Twilight, knowledgeable as she is about magic, have the ability to detect the aftereffects of magic. This could not only eliminate it as a possibility for some cases but also serve as a counterpart to the radio detector/luminol mechanics from the Ace Attorney series.

    35. Let's think about the last revelation there.
      * Twilight assumed that previous visitor forgot to lock the door. Let's go with that.
      * Now, the door was locked and then it wasn't. How?
      * Now, let us assume that the previous visitor did use the door both for entry and exit.
      * This means that we can rule out any non key unlockings of the door from the inside.
** It is unlikely that we have a lock picker (magic or not), so the prepertaitor must have had a key.
** Who would have a key to the house? There are only two ponies that would have one and that is including Rarity.
*** It must have been Swetiebelle that unlocked the door and forgot to lock it afterwards.
