Oh dear. As a Sens fan, I'm contractually obligated to note that the Ponyville Golden Leafs will not be making the playoffs.

    17. I'm surprised Twilight was able to get a team up and running without paying that 100 million bit expansion fee to Gary Bettpony.

Isn't it his job to expand the game into completely unusual markets like Cloudsdale? (Man, is that puck *ever* out of play! Right off the edge of the cloud.)

      ReplyDelete
    54. @Ardashir

It's a play on Gary Bettman, the NHL commissioner. He's widely reviled by fans (myself included) for both presiding over the lockout that caused the NHL to lose an entire season, and for his 'southern strategy' of putting teams in non-traditional markets like Atlanta and Phoenix at the expense of traditional hockey venues.

      Anway...

Thanks for the explanation. Hmm, that may help to explain why here in SE Pennsylvania the city of Allentown is clearing a good-sized stretch of the city to put up a hockey rink. Never mind that we don't even have a team...

    56. Even though I'm clueless about hockey, this story impressed me - I'll be coming back for more, hopefully.

The only bad news is that my fic-in-waiting will never get submitted to ED now - I've been writing "Ponyville United", a fic about the mane 6 and others on the football (soccer if you're American) team for Ponyville. Oh well...

Ha, funnily enough, I was playing around with writing an (American) football fic about the Mane 6 on the Ponyville Cowboys playing the Stalliongrad Steelers. Sports+ponies seems like a popular combination.

      ReplyDelete
    69. Ah, embellishment; my favorite penalty. Maybe if basketball and soccer had it, they'd be a little more watchable...anyway, another good chapter. One little beef, though: it's clear that you're trying to show Ponyville growing and overcoming adversity, but you made a crucial mistake. Since you named them the 'Leafs, all of us hockey fans already know that they're destined for a 4-6 record and no playoff appearance at best. If you want to maintain some element of uncertainty among your readers, you might consider having them change their names to something a little less associated with failure (like, say, to anything except the Coyotes).

      ReplyDelete
    70. I must say that I had always wanted to see ponies playing hockey but this is probably the next best thing.

      ReplyDelete
    71. I started reading for no reason at all, and now you have me hooked on pony hockey. I don't even follow sports in real life. You, sir, are doing an amazing job with this. Keep it up!

tl;dr CONFOUND THESE PONIES! THEY DRIVE ME TO HOCKEY!

      ReplyDelete
    72. I've never been a big hockey fan, but I'm enjoying this story more wholeheartedly than I could have expected.

      ReplyDelete
    73. @ChrisI wouldn't say the Coyotes are bad, they've been better than every Canadian team other than the Canucks for the last two years.

      ReplyDelete
    74. YES. Smash them. So proud of Twilight for saying "Rules? Buck that, let's kick some ASS!" And go Rainbow Dash! Applejack... It was revenge, I can appreciate that, but you're APPLEJACK... You pack more punch in one hoof the -- oh wait that Rose whore slammed Fluttershy. HIT HER HARDER!

      ReplyDelete
    75. Author says Claude Lemieux was the inspiration for the dirty hit on Fluttershy from his hit on Kris Draper in '96.

But then again, he's a Red Wings fan. I like the Devils, so I think of Lemieux's 1995 Conn Smythe and clutch goal scoring more so than I will of his dirtier plays in his career.

      ReplyDelete
    76. @sj14

It's true that they've been far from the worst team in hockey the last few years. I just meant that they have no record of success in their (brief, admittedly) team history. The farthest they've ever made it in the playoffs is quarterfinals, I believe. All the Canadian teams have had stretches where they were very good, even the teams that have never yet won a Cup.

Anyway, another good chapter. It probably says something about me and my puerile taste that the best part for me was not anything in the game itself, but the throwaway line about 'Zamboni mules.' Keep writing!

      ReplyDelete
    77. @Chris I get what you're saying now. Maybe you could name Ponyville the Canucks and have them lose in the finals, or San Jose and have them swept in the Conf. Finals.

      ReplyDelete
    78. @sj14

Given Garry Bettpony's attitude at the end of the chapter, maybe we should name them the Jets: the team the commissioner never wanted.

Also, I noticed that he was channeling the spirit of Roger Goodell by handing out suspensions and fines to whomever he felt like without any oversight. Well, Gary does that too, but usually it's just over concussions and fractured skulls...like that makes it any better...

      ReplyDelete
    79. @Chris You know what I hate about suspensions? No Consistency. They seem to just pull a number out of thin air. I bet that's what Gary Bettpony does here, he goes to some random unicorn on the street, says "Poof up a number between 1 and 10," and that's how they choose.

      ReplyDelete
    80. Does this need to exist?
      *looks at previous comments*

      Huh... I guess it does.

That being said, let me give my two cents. I just got finished reading chapter one and I can already tell that from a formulaic standpoint it's a rather good story. There's nothing wrong with the structure or the way things are plotted out or worded. There's really not much in the way of atmosphere or major description needed, making it what I like to call a "popcorn story." really just something to have fun with and be a little silly. So as far with just "does it work as a story?" the answer is yes.

However... If you don't mind me saying...

It seems like the basis of this story depends upon pretty much everypony being out of character to get the story rolling in the first place... which is never a good sign.

I found myself sitting there and just trying to fathom the reasoning behind a great deal of what was going on. Aside from the initial Appleoosa plothole (really? I was under the impression that it was well established that Appleoosa only came into existence a year ago. How could they have a long established hockey team if the town itself was only established a year ago?), there seems to be no other reason for Twilight to be reading a book about the history of hockey at the beginning but to set up the rest of the story. Why would Twi be reading a book about hockey of all things?

But just getting beyond the opening paragraphs, There's Celestia's letter. She says she's a hockey fan? Fine, I can buy that. She wants a Ponyville team? Okay, fair enough. She wants Twilight to run the team and put together the players and manage the team through the season and she better have a good report at the end of the season and there's no way out of this and she's doing it because she doesn't think Twi's enjoying winter enough.

      ...wat...

Forgive me if I don't understand her logic. If she said "I want you to put together a hockey team for me because of your astounding organizational and managing abilities then fine, that's a fair enough reason to have her at least be the MANAGER. But there doesn't seem to be any reason to make her also be the coach and one of the players as well. And there are many other ways to get her to enjoy the winter season than throwing her completely out of her element into a violent sport such as hockey.

There's Trollestia and then there's "Dumblestia who doesn't think anything through." Trollestia is best executed when she executes the perfect little plot or scheme or prank that has everything fall her way and is really quite hilarious in retrospect. Dumblestia is when she does something completely illogical that for all intents and purposes shouldn't benefit anyone in any way just for the lulz that probably will not exist. Now it's quite possible that in this fic there will be benefits for everyone involved, but that's only because the rest of the cast is out of character too.

      (Comment continued below)

      ReplyDelete
    81. @Sumo Unicorn

(Continued from above because Blogger is silly and won’t let me post overly long comments)

Twilight, for example, is way too consensual of this new job and way too competent at it. How does Twilight know anything about sports? At all? Was she reading about them? Why? How could reading about sports benefit her studies in any way? Was it pleasure reading? That doesn't seem like the sort of thing that Twi would read for fun. And how is she skating so well? She's using magic? Why didn't she use magic in Winter Wrap Up then? Why does she seem so accepting, even pleased to have been forced into this? Why does she not ponder Celestia's logic at all? Why is she so willing to drop absolutely everything else in her life to do this?

Rarity doesn't make sense either. Hockey most certainly isn't a ladylike sport. How is she so perfectly okay with being shoved into a sport where she'll get all sweaty in all that ugly gear and she'll be forced to roughhouse with other ponies? This was a pony who brought a scarf and a tiara up a mountain to fight a dragon. She's completely out of her element.

Fluttershy makes no sense either. I can buy that she might love ice skating, but she said herself that she didn't enjoy hockey. There's no way that she'd willingly join a sport where she might get beaten up by another pony or end up hurting another pony herself.

Admittedly, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, and Pinkie Pie make a lot MORE sense than the others, but I highly doubt that any of them would be willing to drop absolutely everything for a whole season of nothing but training camp. Especially not Applejack who has a family to feed or Pinkie Pie who has obligations at Sugarcube corner. That goes for Rarity too who has a business to run and a sister watch after. Rainbow, assuming there aren't many weather duties, is the only pony that makes sense here.

And you know, I Just noticed something. Celestia never said "force your friends into being on the team." She just said to put a team together. Why Is Twilight putting her friends on the team rather than the most capable ponies for the job like Big Macintosh or Doctor Whooves? This seems uncharacteristically unwise for her.

Now... admittedly. I have only read one chapter. And from other comments it sounds like a fun little popcorn story and yeah, I can definately see that set up. In that respect it's an okay story. But I'm incredibly surprised that nobody else has mentioned yet that the entire story depends on everybody acting out of character for the story to work. It's incredibly jarring.

      ReplyDelete
    82. I'm kind of disappointed that with all the previous references to famous playoff goals and line brawls, he neglected to mimic Owen Nolan calling his shot in the all-star game to complete the hat-trick. I'm not very surprised because he's a Detroit fan (the yzerman goal, Mike Vernon vs Patrick Roy) but I am disappointed.

    85. Having read Chapter Ten, I have only this to say:

"Being a bunch of fricking prima-donnas and storming out in a huff because your captain calls you on your stupidity---Like a Bawssssss!!!!"

I mean, really; the five idiots Twi picked at random need to drink a tall, cool glass of Get Over Yourself. That being said, her literal-mindedness is probably going to keep her from the obvious solution: recruiting real players and watching the rest of the Mane Six stew in their own juices as they watch their replacements try to at least accomplish something.

      ReplyDelete
    86. Still Enjoying this, I'd love for more Ponified announcer stuff poping up, like during the brawl, top notch!.

      ReplyDelete
    87. Jeez, Trixie's taking her villain status to Snidely Whiplash levels this chapter.

      I... I think I'm in love...

Oh, and regarding your note at the bottom of the chapter about how you were surprised so many folks took Twilight's side: I know that for me (and I assume for many other readers) the only relevant fact was that Twilight was trying her hardest, and the other ponies were just going through the motions. As far as most sports fans are concerned, failure to give one's all is a cardinal sin for athletes. Twilight may have been being a jerk, but I'd freak out too if I was supposed to be coaching a bunch of players who clearly couldn't care less, in practice or during the game.

      ReplyDelete
    88. I can probably count the hours of hockey I've watched on two hands, but I still think this is a great story!

      ReplyDelete
    89. Gary Bettpony makes my blood pressure spike every time he makes an appearance. The 8-ball bit was absolutely inspired, though! It's scary just how much sense NHL fines and suspensions make if we take that bit as fact ('Just kidding' my ass...).

And now it's Ponyville vs. Manehatten in the playoffs. Not like I could have rooted for anyone but the Trixie-led Rangers, but you had to put the icing on the cake by having them sign Dr. Whooves, didn't you? Oh well, I've got a feeling that Twilight and co. aren't going to end their playoff run quite yet, but a pony can dream...

      ReplyDelete
    90. In the immortal words of NY Jets linebacker Bart Scott "Can't Wait!" This playoff series is gonna be epic, and I hope Trixie uses Sean Avery's "tactics" (you could call them antics, but you would have to call it effective in the end.)

      ReplyDelete
    91. so isthis pic just going to constantly change every update?
You know since it's the only hockey fic on this site I'm ok with that =P

going to have to start reading this soon, seems fun.

      ReplyDelete
    92. The magic of friendship is strong...but lets be honest. Not even it could make the Leafs win the cup. It would take at least the magic of friendship, the power of true love, the miracle of faith and a bad year for the Habs. :D

      ReplyDelete
    93. This author just makes me happier and happier, first the Bobby Ryan goal, (and even as a Sharks fan, that was sick) and then Trixie becoming Sean Avery, it was awesome.

      ReplyDelete
    94. I'd just like to point out to the author that the recent Moneyball movie has admirably demonstrated that a sports story can be satisfying and engaging without ending in the protagonist's team winning a championship.

In case that was too subtle, let me put this another way: if the Leafs win game three, I am going to stand up at my computer and shout, "Oh, F*** me!" while glaring angrily down at my screen. Then, when my non-hockey/pony watching roommate asks me what I'm so upset about, it's going to be really awkward to explain. Please don't put me in that position! One more chapter of Trixie just isn't enough!

Speaking of, I'm guessing that the next chapter will begin with Gary Bettpony announcing the new GaPT rule, showing as little regard for the ramifications of changing the rules in the middle of the playoffs as his real-life counterpart. Or maybe he'll do what Bettman only wishes he could do and say, "The EHL head office henceforth reserves the right to suspend Trixie five games whenever we feel like it, even if she isn't actually breaking any rules."

      ReplyDelete
    95. @Chris"Or maybe he'll do what Bettman only wishes he could do and say, "The EHL head office henceforth reserves the right to suspend Trixie five games whenever we feel like it, even if she isn't actually breaking any rules." "

And then Bettpony discovers that Discord is a major Trixie fan when ol' Discy appears, transforms Bettpony into a hockey puck, and lets all the major teams smack him around on the ice for several hours.

      ReplyDelete
    96. @Ardashir

You have no idea how hard I'm wishing for that to happen right now.

      ReplyDelete
    97. Oh, f*** you, Gary Bettpony! Trixie just wants to go home! Why must you rub salt in her wound? You're the worst commissioner ever, and that's saying something when Hayvid Stern is in your line of work.

*sigh* Maybe Cloudsdale can avenge the Rangers for me. We can only hope...

    98. ah seeing Trixy humbled almost as good as imagining the goals RD is pulling off

    99. Just wondering why not boston instead of the flyers since then you would have the original six just annoying to come up with a pony related name I assume?

    100. I have never played, know nothing about, and dont even really like hockey, but I'm still reading thing this, so props

*Pulls lever labeled "cloaking system", everything fun goes into hidden compartments switching with regular stuff, a single pony gets caught in the mechanism, his dying screams echo through the walls.*

    104. I used to get the EA Sports hockey games for Christmas every year... this is the best cover yet.

    105. Man, I can't believe it's over! For the last two months, I've been thrilled to follow this story. The game descriptions were clear and easy to follow, and the mix of character-based humor and NHL shoutouts kept a big, goofy grin on my face through every chapter. It's true that the writing was occasionally a bit flat, and that there were a few (minor) grammar problems scattered throughout, but for me it was not enough to detract from the wonderfully enjoyable concept which you've fleshed out over the last 17 chapters.

I, like other readers who have already commented on your DA, was surprised that the Leafs lost instead of going on to the finals, but I'm glad you wrote it that way. Being swept by the Red Wings is a fitting conclusion to such a tumultuous first season. The only thing I would have preferred is for the Rangers to knock them out, but even as I rooted Manehattan on, I knew they were doomed. Oh well, maybe Trixie can lead her team a bit farther next season?

Speaking of next season, the Epilogue (you might want to fix that, btw: prologues go before a story, epilogues after) already has me exited for a continuation. Will you begin writing it right away, or are you taking a hiatus between seasons? Either way, expect me to continue following your stories--as both a hockey fan and a pony fan, this story hits a sweet spot between two of my great loves.

Thanks for the great read, XFizzle.

    109. So, Discord is here to make sure that the next season of the EHL is a time of chaos, madness, and violence?

I ask you, how is this any different from a normal season of pro hockey?

    110. Best moment of the season: Fluttershy checks Gilda into oblivion.

    111. New EHL!

      *Drops everything, begins reading*

      ...

Celestia: "Until he commits a wrong deed or endangers Equestria, we must allow him to have his rightful chance to be a part of our society." I can totally see Discord trying to hide Gary Bettpony's statue behind his back while whistling nonchalantly as she says that. Seriously though, I love Twilight's explanation for why kidnapping the commissioner doesn't count.

And while I'm excited by the prospect of more Trixie this season, I can't help but suspect that she and Manehattan won't be coming out on top when all's said and done. Call it a hunch...

But come what may, I'm glad to see Season 2 is now in the works.

    112. Hmmm...I followed the first story over on FiMFiction.net and in general I think it's pretty good. It's obvious it was done by a hockey fan with hockey fans in mind, and not being a hockey fan I actually learned a fair amount about the sport reading this. Although some of the paragraphs describing the action on the ice I would felt were a little flat and I would wind up skimming them to get to the part where somepony scores a goal. But in general the main characters were written well and having it end without them getting to the championship was a nice touch - it keeps a sense of realism on the whole story and it feels more true to what a real sports story should be.

Now my main problem with the story was that some characters just seem thrown in for the heck of it. Do we really need every single player of the EHL be somepony we've met in the show? Like for example at one point you have Doctor Whooves as a goalie, but he has no lines, no indication of his fanon personality whatsoever. You could have replaced him with somepony named Goalie Savesalot and it wouldn't have affected the story in the slightest. Sometimes you add personalities to the opposing players, and it works at times, but often it just feels like you're just throwing familiar names in for the heck of it.

Now, as for the second story...

Mmm, not too crazy about Celestia's reaction here. I mean, I'm not gonna diss it because at its heart this is a story about hockey with comedic elements so I'm willing to suspend disbelief, but I do feel like you could have played this out a little better. Maybe the secret about Discord could have stayed a secret, and the Golden Leaves would have noticed something amiss and had to work out the conspiracy as they played the season? I dunno, I just don't like how Celestia reacted here, I give her a tad more credit than being willing to trust the self-admitted spirit of chaos. But it's a matter of personal opinion.

    113. Figured I'd post this here, for anyone else who follows this story on EqD, as opposed to on Deviantart. Over there, XFizzle posted this note:

      Hey all,

As of today, EHL2 is postponed for the indefinite future. I lost the spark for writing. I viewed the upcoming chapter with dread, not excitement, which raised a red flag in my mind that I should take a step back. I thought that starting the 2nd season would renew the flame so to speak but alas it has not. It's not dead, but it's placed on the back burner for now. I feel it would be unfair of me to go through the motions and grind out chapters with a halfhearted effort, resulting in a sloppy mess for you, the readers, to navigate through. During this time, I will be pursuing other avenues of creativity while attending to more pressing matters in my life.

Thanks for reading my work, for the support, and for the attention. I hope to resume eventually but it's not "right" at this time. Thanks for your understanding.

      - XFizzle

Here's hoping that he finds his spark and that the "more pressing matters in [his] life" get sorted out. I'm sorry to see the story put on hiatus, but do what you have to.

    114. Ponies and hockey...I'd better steer clear of reading this for the time being. I have to do color commentary on a period of a high school game on Saturday for my sports broadcasting class. I don't want my broadcast partner asking me "who the buck is Rainbow Dash?" if I make a pony reference only bronies would get. Seems like a fun idea, though.

    115. Whoa. This is, like, the second fanfic I ever read

    116. Digging the EHL, caught my attention hardcore. I had a funny thought while I was reading it of how it would sound as a radio broadcast (http://soundcloud.com/farmboykenny/ehl-ponyville-golden-leafs). I hope I gave it justice, please comment.
      Thanks!

    117. GAH! It's back! How did I miss the first chapter being reposted?

I don't really have much to say that I haven't already, so I'll just repeat that I enjoy reading about ponies and hockey way more than I by all rights aught to, and am looking forward to Manehattan taking home the Celestia Cup this time around.

...That's what's going to happen, right? Right.

      ReplyDelete
    118. Wait, I thought the EHL had been taken over by Discord, who turned Bettpony into a hockey puck and planned to turn the noble sport of ice hockey into a contest of hate, violence, and bloodlust? (Wait, isn;t that redundant?)
