Episode 1: The Return of Harmony
Air Date: (Possibly) September 17th
Spoilered Synopsis: Discord escapes from his stone prison and Twilight and her friends act quickly to find the Elements of Harmony to stop him.
So what do you guys think this one will be about? It is now CONFIRMED as a two-parter.

Though kinda funny a male having a main role, that seems very uncommon in MLP, though I wonder if they'll pull a Nightmare Moon here and its just some problem pony who got possessed or something. But something tells me I'll love this new guy <3

ReplyDeleteInstead of finding the elements of harmony again, which they all should still have, it's more logical to say they are going to find out how to actually tap into those powers. The reason I think this is likely is because once they do, they become the actual elements of harmony, and go into alicorn mode! Nothing sells toys better then different versions of the same model, right Hasbro? *winkwink*
Also, Discord is the reason why Luna went insane and turned into Nightmare Moon!

Well this is certainly something exciting. Since everyone is saying worst case scenarios. I'll chime that mine would be that this step-to-step the exact same as the first episode. Except with the original 6 finding a new mane 6 to take on Discord and then all of season 2 will be about the new main 6. Which I would be... mixed about. If the new characters are as good or better than the first it would be ok. But I don't want to see the first season characters go. It might happen though just so new toys could be made... And retreading a story that has already happened seems like a waste of time if you ask me.
ReplyDeleteHowever as I said. That's worst case. I'm not going to assume that is what happens. What I am hoping for is that Discord is going to be something like Tuxedo Mask from Sailor Moon. Have him start as a villain being brainwashed and then become an Anti-Villain. And of course have a fashion sense of similar qualities. Do that and I would be so, so, happy.

ReplyDeleteWhen I saw this, I started to think that September was too early. Then I realized: The holdover episodes from last season. Now that I have that fear put to rest I can move to my next problem: It sounds an awful like a fan fiction story. It will pass but it is still something nagging in my head. The prospect of new ponies and more than likely the return of Luna should be more than enough to keep it down though.

But I do hope this doesn't turn into a Chaos equals evil, order equals good kind of thing, I hate it when shows do that. (That doesn't mean they can't be chaotic evil, just so long as they show him/her/it doing actual evil things).
On another note, Seth, how did you manage to get your spoiler tag wrong? (Twice) Why not just use the same Hex code for the text and background?

ReplyDeleteI know it said not to bring it up in the comments, DON'T WORRY I'M NOT GOING TO SAY WHAT IT CONTAINS AT ALL, but the summary spoiler for the episode makes Discord seem to most definitely NOT be a Nightmare Moon clone, so that puts most people's fear to rest.
ReplyDeleteIn face, he seems to be a completely STRAIGHT villain, so my fears are actually put to sleep also. Finally, I will say though, this two parter will add A LOT more to the mane cast's personalities.
Maybe Applejack will finally have more meat to her character now.
Also, I personally don't like that fan depiction of Discord at all, his design is much too busy and isn't subtle in the least. In fact, I'm hoping he doesn't look like a pony at all, since he's apparently meant to represent all the negative aspects of emotions, hence the name.
I'd like him to look more unnatural and monstrous.
Still, most of my fears have been put to rest reading that spoiler, BUT DON'T READ IT IF YOU DON'T WANT THE PLOT OF THE EPISODE SPOILED.
It does spoil what happens in the episode, but thankfully, it didn't have the conclusion which only makes me more excited to see it.

YES, YES, YES.
I feel exactly the same about this and really hope they don't take all the blame off of Luna for her jealousy and bitterness. It just adds so much more potential conflict for her character, which I hope we'll see in the episode that's been said to be dedicated to her.
Also, I always interpreted the "evil magic" that Faust mentioned on her Deviantart, all but confirmed now to be this Discord character, tempted Luna with more power, hence her Nightmare Moon form.
It would actually fit thematically with Discord's character too, since he seems to be shaping up to be some sort of evil god of sorts, so temptation would fit the bill PERFECTLY.
That and having a villain closely related to one the Princesses would have A LOT of potential.
Quick question, with season 1 how long did it take for the ep's to appear online?

ACTUALLY...
This has been confirmed by the animators as a two-parter, and that these are actually the two un-aired episodes originally worked on LAST season that we've all wondered about for so long. That tells me that this was probably supposed to be the true finale, taking place after The Best Night Ever, and was meant to bookend and cap off the Nightmare Moon storyline and also explain why we hadn't seen Luna in all that time.
So how this all will affect the full season 2 proper is still up in the air, because in essence... SEASON 1 HASN'T ENDED YET.
The downside is that while the Discord episodes may indeed air on or around September 17, this may NOT be the start of season 2. It may be a special to whet our appetites until a premier around December.

ReplyDeleteBear in mind that Season 1 was in production until December or January as well, but the season started airing on October 10, 2010.
Key point: an animator "derped" Derpy's eyes in Episode one. /co/ and the rest of Internet went insane over it.
Starting with "Feeling Pinkie Keen", which aired on February 11, 2011, they "derped" Derpy's eyes for the rest of the season. They were not able to do that episodes 2-14 because those were already finished! 15 through 26 were still in production when the season started.
There is no good reason to wait until ALL the episodes are finished before airing the ones that have been already completed. Many animated TV shows are still in production when new seasons start.
I can get behind that, PokeyPiercy! Except maybe the reasoned discussion part. I figure the mane cast are, for the most part (excluding Fluttershy and maaaybe TSparkle), more the "SOLVE PROBLEMS THROUGH COMBAT" types.

ReplyDeleteIt's been confirmed through multiple sources that the show is not changing, and Hasbro has NOT asked to change the target audience.
At most, I think the only nods to bronies in the show will be things like Derpy, or just little things in the background that will make bronies go crazy, but someone not familiar with the online fanbase will likely think they are cute anyway. :)

ReplyDeleteTheory: Discord was originally Everfree, an anarchist pony who was obsessed with freedom to the point of despising all authority. Inciting a rebellion against Celestia and Luna, he used forbidden Neighcromantic magics to build a fortress, then summoned legions of imps to do his bidding, as well as recruiting regular ponies. He was defeated and cast into a prison of stone, then given immortality as a punishment- cursed to remain in the same 50x50 foot room for all eternity.
Events follow as such:
Year 1: Goes insane.
Year 2-499: Continues being insane.
Year 499-799: Having gotten bored of gibbering, begins honing own magical talent, having all the time in the world to do so.
Year 800: Magical talent now exceeds that of 20% of the population combined, is on par with an amalgamation of 500 unicorns. Begins working on purely theoretical magics.
Year 1500: Magical talent is off the charts, has full command of most known and a lot of unknown magic. Is on par with Celestia in terms of magical power. Still batshit insane.
Year 2000: Creates new, magical body from dark matter/evil manna, uses as new body. Disintegrates old body. Takes the name Discord.
Year 2000 Week 3: Through divination, discovers that Luna feels unloved. Uses magic to transform this into Night Mare Moon, who speaks to Luna in her dreams. Why? Partly resentment, partly shits and giggles.
Year 2001: The New Lunar Republic thing fails, Luna is locked in the Moon. Discord finds out about the Elements of Harmony and seeds the Elements of Discord as counters, planting their jewel seeds at the site of his old fortress, which has become the Everfree Forest. He also sends Neighcromantic energies into four distant stars in order to aid the future return of NMM.
Year 2980: Discord decides to taint some young ponies so as to allow them use of his Elements, controlling events to give a born party pony a depressing childhood and fill a well-adjusted pegasus with fear of her own strength, thereby making her start suppressing her anger. Unfortunately, the Sonic Rainboom later cheers the Party Pony and gives the Pegasus a coping mechanism to deal with her anger. Discord gives up on them and influences the lives of six other beings, including Trixie and Gilda, and manages to suit them to the wielding of Discord's Elements.
Year 3000: The Elements of Discord germinate. Discord plans to bestow them upon NMM, whom he knows is set to return, as tools in what will undoubtedly be a long and arduous campaign against Celestia.
Year 3001: NMM arises once more, is defeated in one night by six random ponies who turn out to be the Elements of Harmony personified.
Year 3002: Discord, having spent a year smashing his head against a wall, is released accidentally by Snips and Snails. After staring at them for forty minutes, slack-jawed, he recuperates and proceeds to start fucking shit up.

He actually sounds surprisingly dark for a villain meant for little girls.
I have a feeling that Discord's a one-shot villain (maybe he makes a comeback later, but not likely), and then there will be a bunch more slice of life episodes, but with maybe pony of the day as well (so we can see a little more fleshing out of the background characters), and perhaps, with their tapping into their elements, it could make those clear glittery dolls of the mane 6 canon?
ReplyDeleteI like the speculation that Discord could be the "force" behind Luna's corruption into Nightmare Moon. Maybe he tries to go after her again and that's why Celestia looks crazy peeved in that little teaser clip.
ReplyDeleteAnd I don't think Discord will be entirely responsible for Luna's corruption and descent. I think Luna's feeling of inadequacy and her jealousy were already there; he just fed on them. I don't think it will cheapen Luna's redemption at all; it'll just add some depth.

Still, like you, I hope he goes beyond just bark and actually has a bit of bite.
That and he doesn't have any dumb villain moments. Or that they become "friends" in the end, but due to Faust stating to HATING those kind of conclusions in the original show, I doubt that'll be the case.

ReplyDeleteThe more I think about it, the more I am against this whole Discord being a villain thing. The cool thing about MLP:FiM was that there was no Protagonist or Antagonist (Luna wasn't really an Antagonist, she just had a fucked up sister who sent her to the moon...) So, how are they going to steer the plot in the same direction as the season 1 opening episode? Not sure.
ReplyDeleteBut this entire episode does sound pretty bad ass. Totally excited. I do hope that a bunch of characters show up in the first episode such as Ditzy Doo (Derpy) or maybe even the likes of the Amazing Fantastic Wonderful Trixie?
And the thing I am most worried about is if they are going to live up to the awesomeness of the first season. The first season, they didn't really have much of a direction nor did they have a fanbase, or memes or etc. So I hope they still stick to the original pony formula and don't end up trying to main stream the series due to the ever growing fanbase.
Sooo...I'm thinking that they could make this a season long arc by having the Mane Six "defeat" Discord, but they actually just break his soul into six parts which become the Elements of Discord, and then I guess six other ponies could find the Elements of Discord and they can end the season with an Epic battle between the elements of harmony and discord.

I personally believe that screencap is fake... I mean, I HIGHLY doubt anypony involved with the production of MLP:FiM would just give away the plot of an entire episode away just like that a full three months before it's slated to come out. They'd more than likely lose their job if they were to pull something like that. And some of the stuff in that synopsis sounds pretty dark for a children's cartoon. I mean, there ARE some pretty dark, serious moments in FiM, sure, but some parts of that screencap just sound a bit TOO dark. Therefore, I call BS until I see the episode for myself.

Pierre Chanliau: I don't. While what the screencap says happens would be pretty awesome, I think it would suck to know exactly how a certain episode is going to pan out several months before it even AIRS. It would pretty much spoil the fun of it.

In any case, though, it gets less and less believable the more I look at the screencap. My personal favorite part of the alleged synopsis? The Pinkie Pie part. That part is bullshit for the following reason... She's the element of Laughter. Almost everything she DOES is to make everypony laugh. She WANTS you to laugh at her. She gets upset if you DON'T.
The only part I see there with any plausibility is the Rainbow Dash part.

ReplyDeleteYeah, I can see you point now that I read it. Although, I wouldn't say that Pinkie Pie would be very keen with others laughing AT her, especially if it was because she was annoying or that they didn't like her.
Still, yeah, it's all pretty silly really.
I guess I'm just hoping for a manipulative villain really.
Pierre Chanliau: Yeah. With a name like Discord, I would expect and hope for him to be a manipulative villain. One thing is for sure... The Season 2 opener will NOT disappoint. It will be epic.
ReplyDeleteI've seen one screenshot of Princess Celestia looking pissed off with the mane cast standing behind her. Maybe we'll finally be able to see what Princess Celestia, and, hopefully, Princess Luna, are truly capable of magic-wise. That'd be a sight to behold.

ReplyDeleteWell... I personally am very excited, i am a bit iffy on how the elemnts of harmony will play out in this episode.
I had made the assumption that either
1. The elements of harmony were a one time thing only, which is why Princess Celestia did not dive in and save the day from the beggining. I was thinking once somepony had used their element it made its way to another that was destined for greatness.
or
2. The main six ponies after that night were unable to call on their elements powers at will, though still present in their daily life the physical manefestation of the elements were no longer theirs to weild and thus their task was to pass their elements onto someone else... much like how the all knowing Princess Celestia is doing right now (though they the main six do not know it every thing in their life had been cleverly plotted by the Princess and there are no coincedences as to why the story has planned out so far).
Just a thought...

So I'll just repeat quickly what I said on it.
We are getting f-ing trolled. The whole "plot" on the screen cap reeks of fanfiction. Why would studio B hand out a whole script to a talent agency that hires voice actors? Don't they do their own voice acting, and have their own actors already? (Mane six) I'm not buying that anonymous post on Ponychan, or wherever it was.
Especially when it came from a "friend who works at a talent agency". Yeah. And I have a nice beach property to sell you here in sunny and 115-degree Arizona. It also comes with a bridge.
The "confirmations" are simple comments that say "Well, someone else said so, so I'm going to agree."
And finally, this sounds a lot like an episode from the Little Mermaid, called the Evil Manta, down to the song about harmony, and the bad guy imprisoned in rock:

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, my good lads. I do like how they're saying that Equestria has a dark side to it. Perhaps my fanfiction won't be so out there after all?
