I can't believe Nyx almost beat Fluttershy. Remember 4 months ago when I said OC ponies would be more accepted as our desperation for pony increases? Looks like it happened... I probably should have thrown Little Pip into the mix too...
The website seems smooth enough now for polls again. I've been trying to optimize the hell out of it, since the load times before were atrocious. Feel free to suggest some below!

Luna probably had about 10 seconds total screen time, Trixie was a smug bad pun spewing showmare with like 2 minutes or so worth of dialog and scenes?

I say Luna is about as OC in her fanon personalities and god knows Trixie is practically an OC with everyones interpretation of how she would be after her exit in Boast Busters.
Why is it then that someone who has shown actual comics and pics of an OC based on Luna's dark emotions given form by a spell that was interrupted half way through, thus giving us this Filly Nightmare Moon named Nyx by Twilight based on one of her fav childhood stories?

Take it for what it is, a pole, based on who LOOKED better in SOCKS and lets face it Nyx had super cute and VALID qualifications for a nomination to best pony in SOCKS.

wow as much as I think it is perplexing to even THINK a made up fan character with only the basics of the personality shown to beat a canon extremly popular character in a poll (she's still my favorite OC), It doesn't surprise me that cute partial phycho vs cute partial phycho would end with the newer character rather than the older flutterhsy who has been squeezed dry of all original content sprouting from her, while Nyx is fresh and still has plenty of material that can be made from her as a base.

ReplyDeleteI am seeing a recurring theme here...
Nyx is a character created by Pen Stroke and Batty Gloom, the authors behind such works as Better Living through Science and Ponies and Creeping Darkness. She first appeared in Creeping Darkness, but her popularity only exploded once they began writing about her in their most recent (and still incomplete) fanfic Past Sins. My current profile pic actually comes from the art that is showcased on the EqD page for said fic.

I think I see the problem here. OCs are fine and dandy for the most part, but the problem with them being included on polls like this is that it automatically divides the community into people who just watch the show, and those who happen to have read that particular fanfiction. You can say that certain show characters are basically OCs in the personalities ascribed to them, but they'll still be familiar to most people even if they don't read certain fanfics that have popularized a certain personality. Whereas OCs that are never seen or mentioned in the show have to have a certain knowledge outside the show itself to even know who they are, and so draw the focus away from the original material. I think a lot of people are uncomfortable with that, especially if it seems to overshadow part of the original cast, which I think might explain this mini-backlash.

ReplyDeleteNope. Pretty sure that the recurring theme that I am seeing is that people don't bother to read the entire comments section before asking questions that are already answered there. :p Then again, I am one of the few people nuts enough to do that regularly.

Glory and socks to the New Lunar Republic! I'm glad Nyx got second, just because Luna/Nyx makes such a great winning pair, her adorableness aside (my vote for Nyx was not in vain!)

ReplyDeleteAs for Nyx beating Fluttershy... what's your point? Fluttershy AND Nyx are made of adorable. It was practically a tie. And in case you didn't notice, Nyx had to beat EVERYONE ELSE in order to beat Fluttershy. I think she's a well-thought-out character with a real heart to her. But that's my opinion. If you don't share that opinion, I still love you. Even when you spam this thread.

Can't you lot doing that ranting at least do it in the appropriate place? 'Much as I love that story, there are people here I'm sure would rather not get drawn into or even see arguments like this.
And a little constructive criticism would be nice and all, I Still can't believe people get nasty about original characters or fanfiction for the simple fact that they are. The very idea of it just feels so.. I'd almost say evil.
It's another person's creative construct; how can anyone dare to call something a person invested their creativity in fundamentally lacking inherent value? If anything is 'disgusting', as one particularly unkind writer put it, that is.

ReplyDelete@Anonymous Poorly written? Hyperbole alert. Granted everyone knows that it has some typos with grammar which are being addressed. But other than that it has been noted that it is a well written story by a vast majority. Calling it poorly written would be a misnomer.

Nyx isn't real. How did that wannabe beat one of the awesomest ponies ever? I rarely read stories about OC ponies because I almost never like them. Fluttershy deserves to be at least second place. Nyx is just Nightmare Moon as a filly, so shouldn't Nightmare Moon be up there instead?
