From a few of the emails I got, it sounds like some people thought the earlier discussion was more than just a hypothetical question thing! I probably should have clarified a bit more. Hasbro did not contact us to create a side series, it's just for fun.
We did also get a bunch of requests for a poll, so lets roll with it!
I can't add every response (There are way too many), but I've grabbed a few that I saw a few times, and combined a couple of others.

ReplyDeleteAlicorn/Discord history gets my vote mainly because other then Luna, Celestia and Discord you can bring in a whole slew of new characters to the party. Also, possible to bring a change up of the theme of the show considering it's way back in the past.
Bah the more I think about it I think history would be a geat episode idea i'm not sure it would work as a series.

ReplyDeleteThough I can imagine a Trixie traveling across Equestria thing if she went to maybe different locations to put on shows running into zany and wacky adventures and such having each place she goes another name for some real life place (Stalliongrad, Amareica, any one of the states IN Amareica, etc.) where we get to learn about their culture while watching a good story filled episode with Trixie in it. Also maybe random tag alongs in some episodes like the mane six and stuff.

ReplyDeleteTrixie has the most character development possibilities of all of them. Everyone's so fixed on what would be COOL and AWESOME that they forget what's most important: Learning! Trixie could slowly learn about Friendship and other life lessons during her journey through Equestria and beyond. The other choices can't possibly compare!
ReplyDeleteBesides, magic shows would be totally META: Deconstructing the very stuff that makes each episode work. Trixie could break the 4th wall just as hard as Pinkie Pie occasionally.
I went for Alicorn/Discord Equestrian History, no-brainer. I would love to learn their backstory (Hopefully it's as epic as some of the fics' versions) and having the setting way in the past will give the opportunity for a complete change of pace and style.

ReplyDeleteOtherwise, CMC all the way. Lauren said that she made FIM with the idea in mind that there's more than one way to be a girl. The CMC could (and do, in some of the episodes that feature them) that there's more than one way to grow up.
I predict that the results of this poll will much more likely be a popularity contest of characters rather than what premise would make the best show. Le sigh.

ReplyDeleteI personally like the concept of a Twilight Sparkle arc or a Rainbow Dash arc, as I think they would probably make the series more involved with the characters, which is something I've wished for the series since day one, but unfortunately have never gotten. I mean, I'm perfectly okay with all the one-off episodes, but an actual arc, in my opinion, would make the show significantly cooler in my eyes, and that's saying a lot, because the show is already cool enough as it is.

It would provide nice contrast to the main show, gives us opportunity to explore already important characters and will not interfere in any way with what Mane6 is up to (unless time travels will be involved)

ReplyDeleteI have to say that there is a rich and varied fantasy world full of magic and monsters. You HAVE to have adventure in it. The best one to do it is the somewhat fictionalized stories of Daring Do. Although, I would accept Trixie or as yet unknown team of ponies doing the same.

One may say I'm taking it to seriously since it was only a discussion, but then I could argue the other may not be in the right discussion at all. The idea was to pitch something that'd be majorly appealing to the male youth (which I assume aren't those who watch the show) which involved ponies.

I hear issue about copyright issues with Dr. Who, but beyond the name, what issue would there be? Surely a pony with the ability to travel through time and space (at will? unintentionally? slowly learns how to control it?) wouldn't get anyone into trouble. To me, that's like saying there's copyright issues between Dr. Who and The Time Traveler's Wife, or any time traveling thing - whichever came first. So we have a space-and-time traveling pony that can take other ponies (Derpy) with him. I don't think there should be any problems.
With Dr. Whoof and Derpy misadventures, we can see the beginnings of Equestria, the early days of Celestia/Luna, maybe meet the original inspiration for Daring Do (I just don't see Daring Do standing on her own...) maybe we can learn more about Zecora's origins and how/why she came to Ponyville, maybe some Everfree forest stuff, and see Discord's reign.
With Dr. Whoof and Derpy as the backbone, all the other things everyone wants to see can be incorporated. It would be amazing :)

ReplyDeleteA series similar to Wishbone where the ponies read stories similar to the original such as The Odessy or 1984. Not only would it have that but more Daring Do as a small side stories. That way Hasbro could market Daring Do books and children would be encouraged to read classic literature.

Someone brought this up in the Drawfriend, and it's by far my favorite (realistic) idea for a spin-off series: MLP:FiM:TNG, featuring the adventures of Pipsqueak, Scootaloo, Apple Bloom, Snips, Snails, Dinky, and Spike.

Lyra & BonBon won by a narrow margin, but I would enjoy reading about the Moon Princess's school and the nocturnal fillies and colts attending it: 1) Lots of coming-of-age storylines for background and OC foals alike, 2) rivalry drama full of Enemy_Mine, Rivals_Team_Up, 3) Big_Damn_Heroes moments, and 4) throw in your choice of TvTropes Youngsters archetypes: Cute_Bruisers, Little_Miss_Bad*sses, Bumblebees, Military_Brats, Tykebombs, Child_Prodigies, Bad*ss_Adorkable, you name it.
I feel a Twilight Sparkle Magic arc could also be quite the storyline could but it could be overwhlemingly involved and complicated (exploring the fundamental magical mechanics of the series is srs bzns), so I put it underneath

ReplyDeleteI did a lot of creative brainstorming, here's what I think you need to do if you want to make a spin-off.
- Keep essentially the same world but explore more of it or different kingdoms.
- Don't stress continuity with the first series too much.
- Consider appealing to the ancillary demographic without completely breaking free of the original. Meaning more action, more magic, maybe a few main male characters. But still cute. Like if it got a couple doses of Powerpuff Girls feeling perhaps. Where it can appeal to many different groups. As you see with fan productions, you can do just about anything with ponies.
I can see with season two they are making a lot of openings to spin-off the show. I know Hasbro loves money so if they can launch a new line of toys around a new series, they're sure to be happy. Here’s my thoughts on what might work.
The Adventures of Daring Do - You'd need to tweak things a bit but I would love to see a show on TV which reminded me of classics like Talespin or Ducktales. You could even borrow some of the structure. A mixture of slice of life-y shows and adventure ones. You'd need to come up with a group of characters surrounding Daring Do but the internet has already started brainstorming that. Could work.
Luna's School For Gifted Unicorns - I've honestly always found Luna to be a much more compelling character than Celestia. A lot of potential. You have a group of young unicorns discovering their abilities. Evoke magical girl shows or Harry Potter in your pitch. I'd love to see it develop characters who learn and change and grow. With Luna, a character who has made a lot of mistakes in her past, you have a compelling mentor.
Cutie Mark Crusaders Full Spinoff - You can see the format from their episodes. I'd focus on the school and develop a lot of the other characters. Your pitch would be something like the school episodes of Little House on the Prairie.
Doctor Whoof and Derpy's Time traveling Shenanigans - Biggest problem, rights to naming. This one would need to wait till we see how time traveling might be established in the show in that upcoming episode. You’d would want all the danger and whimsy of a Doctor Who episode and maybe some serial quality. Maybe borrow from Back to the Future and make Whoof a quirky inventor with a time machine. Borrow from Gyro Gearloose maybe.
Trixie's Journey Across Equestria - Can an antagonist really make it as a main character? Maybe you postulate Trixie decides to go back and really study magic and get good at it and put her hoof where her mouth is. I could imagine her amidst something of a traveling circus with an interesting array of characters.
Dash's Joins the Wonderbolts (AKA The Rainbow Dash Show) – Only if you make it to just be about the Wonderbolts...The Wonderbolts...as a title is really cool. You make it about them. You have a different, rookie character trying to get on the team.
Derpy's Mailmare Chronicles - Not sure. Maybe borrow judiciously from Talespin and their delivery antics.
Alicorn/Discord Equestrian History - Make the Silmarrilion of MLP? Well...actually that might be interesting but you first need to really come up with some interesting characters or make it an anthology show which deals with little bits of history. Maybe it can be like a Masterpiece Theater of Spike introducing stories of pony history in his smoker robe (looking good Spike...LOOKING REEEEAL GOOD!).
Something with Zebras - This is the part where the writer screams and runs away because he has to write rhymes day after day.

ReplyDeleteConsidering that the original question was to consider a show that would be appropriate to target to a young male audience, I disregard the viability of most of these poll options as they are more a reflection of current fan popularity in characters.
ReplyDeleteI like the consideration that Sarah above put into this and they make some interesting analysis, but I'll go ahead and make some judgments myself.
Daring Do: Somewhat viable, but I think there are major obstacles in keeping with the FiM appeal since it is basically a different universe and there isn't a terribly good way of reconciling the two. I feel like the morality basis is pretty integral to why we enjoy FiM and they would need to dilute the focus on Daring Do in order to meet that order. Also, if the character is so far removed from the main FiM universe, I worry it would really just feel like a cheap Indiana Jones knock off.
I think a better take on this idea would be to use, say, Pip the Adventurer in a more grown-up form.
And not just because I have harbored deep longings for such a spin off series ever since I saw the first fan art. Not only do I think he would be more appealing to viewers who never got into FiM, but it would allow some great ability to retain a connection with the older fans by allowing for some other character continuity. Twilight, for example, would make a great mentor character for Pip to correspond to in order to relay his adventures so as to convey the message of each story. Another great twist they could pull is him writing to Princess Luna. You could even make one of the CMC his sidekick. (Scootaloo most obvious choice. You can make your main character more thoughtful and cognizant of moral dilemma if you've got a brash sidekick to balance).
And as an aside, I think this kind of series would be the best hope for fan-favorite one-shot characters to allow them to perform in their element. (Even room for epic characters like Discord perhaps?)
As far as the world goes, I think we've all seen that Equestria is well dangerous enough for an adventurer, what with dragons, manticores, timber wolves, ursa majors, and all manner of terrible creatures and magics. Heck, that's just Ponyville.
...I was going to comment on the other poll options as well, but I think maybe I'll just leave it since I got way sidetracked.

ReplyDeleteHm, well just briefly. I think the Alicorn/Discord history, Lyra and BonBon, and Trixie journey ideas completely neglect the cerebral experiment I thought the original post was suggesting. If the point was to make a show geared towards young males (and most logically a focus on those who aren't already fans), these plots aren't readily appreciable by those not already ingrained in the fandom. Nor do I think the characters stand well enough on their own.

Anyone who thinks Doctor Whooves is a good idea deserves a good smack to the head. Seriously. And the same goes to all of the other "background pony gets their own show!" ideas. 'cause there's no way it'd match the fanon and so everyone'd get pissy. Also, there's no way Hasbro'd get the rights from the people who genuinely own Doctor Who.

ReplyDeleteactually i would like a CMC spin-off too, but the problem is that there's already episodes of them & even if it would be hilarious the problem is that there won't be too much diference with FiM of course they could begin the series with a few chapters in ponyville & then after have tryied everything in there they should travel all over equestria to find their cutie marks ,that also would be a great chance to see other locations of Equestria besides Canterlot,Ponyville & the Everfree forest (but that would be the same interest of the Trixie's spin-off) .It would be mostly like The Cleveland Show formula, is the same than the main show but they have to change the background so it wouldn't be a Family Guy episde with another main character
-about the spin-offs of the supporting cast: actually it depends of how development of the characters IE: a show of PON-3 & octavia would be awesome but the problem is that they're mostly fandom, i mean do they even speak in the show? that's the problem of the thin line between canon & fandom, and the same applies to Derpy ,if hasbro/HUB would make a Spin-off wouldn't they do it of characters they actually have developed enough to at least have a chapter .Let's use the Madagascar movies as Example both movies has a huge supporting cast & many of them would be perfect fannon material ,but why dreamworks choose the Penguins & king Julien? becauce they're the most developed funny characters but inside the canon.
-about Zecora & the other zebras: well besides being a pain in the ass for the writters becauce of the rhymes but maybe not all the zebras speak n rhyme, maybe zecora is the rhyming weirdo i dunno & as i said im curious to see the rest of the pony world
-the Hystory of Equestria: it would be a cool show for the fanbase ,but how good would be for the real target audience of MLP? wouldn't be a bit too dark? considering the legends of Nightmare Moon & how miserable was suposed to be the life of the Equestrians during the Discords's ruling
-the Twilight's spin-off: errr isn't she already the main character of MLP:FiM already? i mean really what's the point of maiking the spin-off of the characters that actually are the main character. i mean would you make a The Simpsons spin-off about Homer? But ok let's consider that someone would make this "spin-off". it wouldn't be a re-make? or a whole new MLP series?
-Dash in the wonderbolts: i think this is more plot for the main series than a spin-off but who knows maybe it would work

I have an idea for what it could be... The show could be called. "Daring Do and Friends".
ReplyDeleteThis could make it so the side series could have different characters instead of just being focused on one single character. Plus it could just be shorts involving characters of less involvement/importance, which would include all background ponies/characters,Discord,Luna,etc.
