• Story: Kindness's Reward

[Shipping] Hey so... this Trixieshy story is really addicting. Meaning emails are on hold until I finish it, just sayin.

    Author: Avery Strange
Description: Fluttershy is used to nursing critters of all sorts back to health. When she comes across a broken showmare, however, it will take all her patience and care to help the other pony. Especially when Trixie begrudges her help every step of the way. Can she get through to her? And can Trixie learn that she doesn't need to stand alone to stand strong?

    1. Not sure if posting a complete story in parts is better than posting parts of a story at a time.
But I'm sure, like your other works, that this story will be good.

    6. Frak yes, more Avery Strange. Might as well just give this guy's stories 6 stars right out of the gate, Seth, seriously.

    7. All these sadfic Trixie fics is making my eyes water. I NEED TO WRITE A NON-SAD TRIXIE FIC.

But seriously, 6-star out of the gate? Check.

    8. Yay! More Avery Strange! Looks like I wont be bored tonight after all...as well as not sleep until I finish reading it. Go go insta 6 star?

    9. So I was thinking about that exact picture earlier this evening and wondering if anyone had written a fic about trixie getting lost in the everfree forest after fleeing ponyville. I'm browsing the story archive looking through the Trixie section, when this appears on top of the page after a refresh. Pretty much exactly what I was in the mood for, and very well written as usual.

      I love this fandom.

    10. After reading the whole thing I will say that this is...a story. Great character development, inner conflict is well done, redemption story is taken in at the right pace, romance was sweet, characters are in character, stetting was great, and very realistic emotions. Very good job! Hope to see more from you!

    11. Well written. It leaves me speechless.

(and I suspect the splitting into chapters is due to dA)

    12. This is extremely well written. Very in character.

      And just so damn good.

    17. Well there's my chance at an original story gone.

      :(

      ReplyDelete
    18. This is shipping? I can live with this :)

Seriously though, it really was the best (and first ;) fanfic that I've read all the way through, and it wasn't so horrible because they were basically just really close friends up until the end, AND most importantly, they were all in character. Out of character + poor writing are the main reasons I never read fanfiction.

      ReplyDelete
    19. Very good, definitely deserves a 5/5 for sure.

      ReplyDelete
    20. Quite a nice and heartwarming little story. I'm not sure why AJ was so hostile, though.

      ReplyDelete
    21. This was a very engaging read.

      A well-crafted traditional Bildungsroman - with shipping!

Trixie certainly goes through Pony Hell in the earlier chapters, though - my goodness!

I try to be extremely stingy with 5's, since it seems the ratings 'round this blog err on the high side, but I honestly have precious little to criticize here - there were some tiny typos here and about, but nothing grievous.

All in all, this was a touching, well-written and enjoyable story.

      Bravo!

      ReplyDelete
    22. My only objection to this one would be the "sappy" tag.

      ReplyDelete
    23. Holy carp.

A well written shipping fic, and one heck of a crack pairing at that. And so in character too. And character development, the one thing most fic authors forget!

The world needs some Trixieshy artwork now >>

    34. This is... if it isn't my favorite fanfic, something is wrong with me.

And Seth, your rating system is broken... it seems to only go up to five stars.

    35. I don't normally read fanfics.. I don't have time for it. But something about the premise of this one got me reading... and I couldn't stop.

    38. Spoilers

This was a very touching story for the most part. Certainly one of the better ships. The feather was a nice touch. Not entirely original, I've read something similar before, but still added to the story nicely. I don't see AJ being as hostile as you portray her. That would be more like Dash. Of course, Dash certainly got her kicks in. But AJ... I'd see her as one of the first ponies to forgive. Still, its your take on her, so that's fine.

I feel the ending lets it down a bit though. The battle against the dragon... I was really hoping you would give them both equal time to shine (Fluttershy and Trixie I mean). Trix first saving Flutter, then Flutter using The Stare when she saw Trixie was in danger, something like that. It would also have been nice if, when outside of the cave, the others would have been allowed to jump in. This would have allowed for more bonding between Trixie and the mane 6 as well. And the lone heroine bit is so overdone, especially with Trixie. I was hoping you'd be a bit more original.

The final story, other then partly being a retelling of the first one (which you do admit to at the end, so ok) seems to borrow perhaps a bit to much from "The Sage and the Storyteller" from "Out in the Cold." I assume you were inspired by that. I don't know, I admit I might be seeing things there. Trixie is a storyteller after all, so its not surprising you have her tell stories. But it just seems a bit to similar to me. It also would have been nice to see a bit more interaction between Fluttershy and Trixie and especially Trixie and the other mane cast after the story.

Obviously, most, if not everything above, is personal opinion. But yeah, it does make me feel that the ending could have been a bit stronger. Nevertheless, as I said, I did enjoy the story enough, especially in the beginning. You gave Trixie enough time to accept her condition and grown into the relationship with Fluttershy you went for. That's always good, better to slow then to quick. Again, the feather was rather adorable. And I liked how you handled Dash there, her seriousness. That really set the mood for that scene. All in all, certainly a joy to read.

    39. Wow. My new favorite fanfic, and ship. TRIXIESHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

      ReplyDelete
    40. Good story and stuff, but your version of Trixie... suffice to say I hate your Trixie. It's NOT the mare I love and admire. I like Trixie's from "Of Mares and Magic" or "Blueblood returns" or even "One Trick Pony". But trot to Everfree forest? Fear that petty ponivillians so much to chose monsters and hunger over them? That's not Trixie! It's just mare with same name.

Overall, as I said, story is good. It's just story about Trixie's weak and petty twin with same name.

      Excuse me!

      ReplyDelete
    45. I have loved all your works, and this one is your best. I would have never thought of this pair, and at first glance the only things more absurd would be applity or Gildashy, but you make this work perfectly, so perfect to the point it makes just as much if not more sense than twixie and apple dash.

      ReplyDelete
    46. I went into this not having any idea how such a combination could work. TrixieShy seemed almost bordering on crack pairing levels.

But in the end, you managed to spin a convincing and in-character tale the ultimately does more than enough to justify the events that happened in the story. It in no way replaces Twixie as best ship, but now I can look at the ship from a perspective of understanding rather then confusion.
Applejack's behavior rubbed me the wrong way at first, but before I got to Chapter 6 I ended up understanding it. I would normally think Rainbow Dash would be the one to act that extreme, but then I remembered that she did act that extreme at first and she saw firsthand that her behavior wasn't justified; whereas Applejack was acting sorta the same way but wasn't directly aware of the effect it was having on Trixie.

The only real problem I had with this was that I think you leaned on Applejack's accent too hard, because it made her dialog harder to read than I feel it should be.

      ReplyDelete
    47. First, yes I cried cause damn that was a moving fic.

But secondly wow never have I had a moment of such strong visceral dislike for a member of the mane cast that you managed to invoke in me towards Applejack at that party. I genuinely hated her at that moment and that's a testament to your skills as a writer.

Bravo and an easy 5 stars.

    48. @GaPAoT
She didn't choose the forest over Ponyville. Sure, she did go there after she left Ponyville, but that was just because she needed to get away from her embarrassment and plan her comeback. Then she got lost in the forest for much longer than she intended.

      ReplyDelete
    49. TwiLuna, RainbowScratch, and now TrixiShy. How do you keep ship the Mane Six with single appearance (and in Scratch's place background) and make them the most unbelievably amazing ships there are?

I mean, you made me like Trixi! And I can't even picture Dash with anyone other then Vinyl Scratch anymore, (would love to see a TwiLuna sequel to "Thunder and Lightning" by the way.)
10/5 stars. Everything you write is amazing. Even you little Derpy and Carrot Top one shot, "Behind Walleyes." Please keep up the amazing work!

      ReplyDelete
    53. Amazing story, highly recommended, even for those who don't care for shipping. Sure to be 6 star!

      ReplyDelete
    54. 5 stars for the awesome story and well handled ship. I can't even think of all the times I've liked the premise of a shipfic and it was ruined because the author seems to forget how love actually works. This story took it's sweet time (pun intended) letting the characters get to know each other.

6th star definitely earned for recursion. Recursion is ~so awesome~!

      ReplyDelete
    55. Read through it and... I hate to be the spoilsport, but I only liked it up until halfway through the last chapter. After that, it was a little heavier on the shipping than I like (nothing wrong with writing it like that, just a personal preference), and the retelling the story bit... I dunno. It just dragged on a bit, and somehow took me out of the emotional connection that had been forming. I think this is the first story I've read that I want less of. Don't get me wrong, it was still a good story, and I liked the ending, but I guess most of that last chapter just isn't my thing.

      Okay let's see...

Trixie and Fluttershy? Yeah right. Like those two have anything in com--...

Okay that's believable. I could definitely see that..

Oh wow, this makes so much sense. And everypony is in character, and everything is believable--...

HOLY $#@! THIS IS GOOD!!! Like WOW! It's touching, it's cute, it's hilarious (I actually fell out of my chair once or twice), IT MAKES SENSE!!!

... Take my money, now! You took canon Trixie (didn't have any more magic than she displayed) and crafted out a believable, nay, perfect story that's just too good for my health. If I had to criticize anything, it would be that it is posted on Deviant Art and DA makes my computer run slow.

This is now one of my top recommended fics, thank you for this tale.

      ReplyDelete
    63. I just want to say that the last bit, the final telling of the story from Trixies mouth, that decided it for me.

I love this story. I had the same misgivings as many others when starting to read this fic, but you thoroughly settled it all. It was hard to keep myself from tearing up at the ending lines, from happiness rather than sadness no less! Now I have to read your other stories that's for sure!

    65. I'm not usually a fan of non-canon shippings, but this...wow. Literally the most enjoyable fanfic I've read (and I've read a LOT!) 66. Wow...just wow...this is such a great story.. (and I HATE shipping!)Everything was done so well! I couldn't believe how good this was...I found myself crying at the end because it WAS the end!

    68. I have to echo Anonymous comment at 9:02. I find most shipping stories rather shallow, yet here it doesn't take from the characters. And chapter 5 is one of very few writing pieces that really give the Great and Powerful Trixie justice! Since she is usually so badly mistreated in fanfics, it's a reason enough to love this story to bits;)

    75. First fic I've shed tears to, period. This is a winner in my heart!

      ReplyDelete
    76. I know it's a slim chance that the author will see this, and you don't have to respond if you do, but I had to say this anyway.

You changed the way I look at ship-fics. I honestly just thought your story sounded interesting, and I like the idea of Trixie being redeemed. The thought of Fluttershy being her catalyst just seems natural, and even though you say you use too many cliche's or whatever, this is beautiful. You did what few ship-fic writers do, and kept the characters true to who they really are in the show, and put real thought into character/plot development. I rarely find a story I have so much to say about, and this is deserving of not only a 6 star, but every star ever. This is a masterpiece in my eyes, and I can only hope that with your talent, you go beyond fanfiction. With writing like this, you could go far.

Thank you for one of the most enjoyable reads I've had in years. This is one of my new favorite stories, and my only complaint is that it was over too soon.

      ReplyDelete
    77. At first, upon seeing it labeled as a Trixieshy, I was pretty skeptical. I seriously didn't think that it would work, or it would be WAY too forced.

But my God, was I wrong, and I've never been so glad to be wrong before. THIS, is a masterpiece.

    82. I don't often make posts on EQD, but for this story I have to. It was just that good.

First off, I absolutely loved the way characterized Trixie. You kept her personality true to canon, and portraying her in an almost bardic role was genius. It fits her showmare personality so well I want it to be canon in the show.

Second, Trixie's performances were amazingly well written. Not many people can tell a story within a story like that, especially when both of them are stories the reader already knows. Yet you did it, and you did it well. Despite already knowing exactly what was going to happen I was riveted to the screen shedding manly tears as Trixie wove her illusions. I would give you all my stars just for those two scenes alone.

But the rest of your story did not disappoint either. I couldn't stop reading to do anything else, not even eat. I had no choice to sit and read the whole thing at once because the thought of having to wait, even only a few seconds more, to get to the next word, the next sentence, the next page, was more than I could stand. I'm almost certain I could give this story to anyone, even people who know nothing about MLP, and they would be crying as they read the final chapter, it's just that well written. As one of the previous commenters said: you have real talent. Not just as a fan-fic writer, but as a real author. I've read most of the other stories you have on EQD, and if you have even the tiniest desire to ever pursue a career in writing, please, for the love literature, the English language, and all people who love a good story, DO IT! And make sure you keep Avery Strange as your pen name when you get published so we'll know it's you ;) .
