With the huge lack of new episodes driving all of us insane, I guess these are inevitable! Another team has started on their quest to twist out favorite little equines into completely ridiculous versions, and hopefully receive some laughs out of it! This is their first episode, and their first actual abridged series in general, so I'm assuming they want some feedback!

ReplyDeleteI don't like to be harsh, but Ponies don't need to be abridged tobe enjoyable IMO.
I abridge Pokemon Black and White. Why? That show has lost truthfully ALL of it's likeability that Pokemon used to have. So I do it, because it NEEDS it.
But I digress. If bronies like pony Abridged series', that's fine, I'm just saying, it'll never stack up to the original, therefore, it seems unnecessary.
Not bad. Just needs improved microphones from some voica actors. And an actual storyline.
ReplyDeleteIt was better than the other Abridged Series, I'll give it that. Camaraderie is Supernatural and The Mentally Advanced Series are still the only good attempts at abridging the series I've seen.

I literally just spent a few minutes trying to make an argument, but I couldn't. My favorite abridged series are all based on crappy and meh anime (Yu-Gi-Oh! abridged, Naruto abridged, Code Geass abridged, Hellsing abridged, Kampher abridged), and the only counter arguement I could find was MLP The Mentally Advanced Series, but that isn't viable in this context since I'm trying to find an abridged series outside of MLP that's good while the source matierial is good as well... It's nigh impossible...
I thought that was kinda good. Not the best, but with time, I think it could be great. :)

ReplyDeleteI personally have to disagree, if anything the one with the Elements of Parody (link at the end) was by far the best in terms of jokes, keeping to the original story, and sound quality.
To quote from the second half of the pilot, "The best parodies are those that build on the original work, and don't rely on things like gratuitous cursing or pop culture jokes. There's a reason the original show got people's attention, and paying tribute to that isn't a cop-out, it's parody!"
Okay, so maybe that very last part doesn't apply here, but the rest most certainly does.

Its ok. Could use some more SFX and some music for atmosphere etc and some better mics for some of the ponies etc. Other than that nice job.

Did enjoy the voice cast for rarity, spot on. Dash not so much.

ReplyDeleteThe Applejack and Fluttershy parts made this. Although, I think the main problem is everypony starts with the first two episodes. I think the Mentally Enhanced Series and Camaraderie is Supernatural have the right idea in doing the normal episodes. I really think the community is tapped out of jokes to put into the same two damned episodes.

ReplyDeleteVery mediocre voice acting. The quality of it was literally painful at parts--cheap microphones with awkward feedback as well as going from not being able to hear one pony to OHFUCKMYEAR to the next one that was 10x as loud.
The no background music/sound is something that is also very distracting and brings focus to said voice acting.. It'd bring a lot more to the show and keep people interested if there was any sort of music or even basic sound effects.
What's great about abridged series is they're usually an episode's "content" in a brief few minutes. This is more like a straight up parody. While I appreciate originality and the "plot" is definitely.. unique.. I don't like how people have to rely on over-the-top "crazy" to try and fish for laughs. You lost me completely with the Fluttershy thing. I get the reference.. it's just really awkward and rather jarring.
TL;DR:
-Keep things short and to the point. A quick joke is more entertaining than something that's dragged on. And if it's bad, it's a lot less painful for the audience.
-Have some sort of bloody quality control with the sound. Mostly volume, but also talk to your voice actors about having character. Half of the time they sounded dead and reading a script awkwardly in a basement.
-Long awkward black screen pauses between scenes should be cut out o.o;
-Watch Yugioh the Abridged for ideas on how to make things successful. >.> LK is a comedic genius in terms of parody.
Things you did well.. The Rainbow Dash thing was pretty entertaining, as you were touching at something pre-existing in the community, and the scene with Apple Bloom was clever, again because the series had already alluded to the "Apple" product line with Big Macintosh. Stick with more intelligent/tactful humor, or at least stuff that makes sense. I'm so tired of people thinking they're comical by using cheap methods as seen with Spike's letter--whatever derogatory comment he made towards Twilight (something involving bitch.)
There's a lot of great potential if you just go slowly and tweak things a bit. Overall I'd give it a 3/5.

ReplyDeleteI apparently mixed up two different series. I was thinking Friendship is Witchcraft, which did A Perfect Swarm.
The point is- Including the two-parter as one, there are twenty five stories in the series. So why is only the first one being attacked? Even after every logical permutation of events has been covered barring making the characters bad-crazy or returning to immature humor.

Yeah, some music in the background would do it some good, but i can't seem to find any files of background music other than the vocal-free videos on Youtube. also, i can't seem to find any decent sites with good sound effects... They all seem like powerpoint defaults from 98...
Glad everyone seems to like Rainbow and Applejack's scene, i gotta say, we enjoyed them too.
As for Fluttershy, I promise she'll be better in episodes to come... She's Flutterhigh in our minds, and sometimes she's not high on the Poison Joke, so i think in future episodes she'll get better.
As for microphone quality, yeah, we all kinda had varying qualities. I kinda rushed it at the end to get everything done, since we had been slowly working on it for a while, and i really wanted to push it out more quickly...
I promise we'll improve things as they go along, and i hope you guys support us when we get more episodes out ^^

As a video, it wasn't too bad. Could have used some better sound quality, but some of the jokes were pretty funny.

Well, it's certainly not Friendship is Witchcraft caliber, but it definitely shows potential. Anime fangirl Rarity is definitely an interesting twist. I also liked how the booze was drugged, that is absolutely classic!

ReplyDeleteReally, though, I like it. It could stand to be a bit more 'abridged', as some of the scenes felt like they went on longer than they needed to be, and some audio equalization would be nice.
I give it a solid B+.
To be on top it needs to be about 20% cooler.

First off, sound.
Sound control needs to be consistent. Rarity's VA was too soft. Also, music. Most of the time there should be Background music to keep us entertained when there isn't even anything happening.
Jokes.
While there were several times when you had jokes that literally made me lol. You must realize that above all, an abridged series is there for entertainment. A good Abridged Series is a stream of good and (at least occasionally) satirical humor that leave the audience in a good mood. Look at the original show. For me, there is never a moment when I'm not smiling with childish glee. That's because the show makes me happy.
(PROTIP:People like being happy.)
Please don't give up like FiMAbridged. Learn as you go along. If you try at it, you should be top-notch pros by the time season 2 comes round.
Or you could just quit.
Remember that other person who quit? Yeah, nobody does.

You can hear his mic isn't top notch, just enough that it doesn't give feedback, and that the volume doesn't rape our ears. Good mics are not needed, but bad mics shouldn't be there.
