• Small Update on Derpy Overall

    A few things have popped up over the course of the day.  Again we apologize for being slightly vague with it all, right now there are all kinds of rumors coming in from every direction, so we are only taking the stuff that is 100% confirmed.

    Right now what we do know:
    Until we can get a solid response from Hasbro, or more Derpy take-downs happen, this is the only completely solid evidence we have.  It does sound like some changes to the character overall will happen in the near future.

      The point is Derpy has become the symbol of the Brony community. She was the first prominent influence we've had on the production and serves as a connection of good will and recognition.

      Her removal would be insult to the community. Hence everyone's reaction to this...

    2. Personally I think one of the biggest reasons to still hope this is just a bit of a snafu is the fact that the episode is still up on the hubworld site. (Even though I can't view it from outside the US, I can see that it's there.) One would think if it was Hasbro/The Hub's decision to pull it, it would have gone from there first.

      It's possible *Apple* received complaints directly addressed to them, pulled it knee-jerk fashion as they're known to do, and discussions are ongoing between them and the Hub to sort it out and it's just a matter of time. And the We Love Fine thing could, as others have been suggesting, be just a copyright-management thing being sorted out.

      It's possible. I think we all just hold on to that. But I also think there's no harm in letting out a big yell of support for the team that make the show.

    3. and who knows, if all this comedy of errors is because Apple pulled it in a knee-jerk reaction to trolls, it might impress upon hasbro the advisability of having more than one online distributor for their content.

      Remember Bronies, assumptions and guesswork nearly kept one of the best characters (Zecora) out of Ponyville!

    5. Wow. Glad I got my copies off YouTube. Of course, I'm sure hundreds of other bronies did too. So, really, changing the episode would do nothing. Derpy lives.

      That said, I'ma grab some popcorn. I've never watched a fandom implode before. Looks interesting.

    6. It's a fucked up world we live in. Sorry, but I don't feel anything but rage, Derpy is canon and Hasbro should deal with it.

    7. Wow. So much hate in these comments.
      Know that the fact that people are against the name "Derpy" are only doing it because they believe it's offensive against mentally challenged people. It's NOT to piss anyone off.
      Instead of throwing insults at Yamino and Pepper, look up their articles. Read and THEN judge.

      You're implying that this is a community built around the idea of watching something to make your own opinion about it rather than listening to the majority about how it's stupid.

      So silly.

    9. While I think it's right for us to complain about this issue (it's completely ludicrous) and voice our thoughts, let's keep it civil and mature, no flooding Hasbro with angry emails and hurling insults everywhere. Half of these complainers are probably trolls anyway. Nevertheless, we must stand up for poor Derpy =(

      ReplyDelete
    10. Whilst I think "Derpy" is a retarded name, I hope political correctness isn't the reason they're doing this.

      ReplyDelete
    11. I don't know...
      But for those Ableist they always have a word to describe those people with disabilities.

      Changing names or stopping using that word doesn't help a lot.

      ReplyDelete
    12. So I think if they really have to take it down. I'd prefer leave Derpy be unnamed.

      It would be so easy to yell death threats at you (and all your wretched kind), but I decided to be better than that.
      Maybe this illustration works better:
      I would have to spend a week in a small locked room with one person and options are:
      1) violent claustrophobic axe murderer-rapist-pedophile
      2) you

      It wouldn’t be you.
      “All my love” yeah right! Your “love” is poison; I think we can do without it, thank you very much.

      Oh, there are a lot more where that came from, but don’t worry I won’t start a witch-hunt before we have some kind of official statement on this matter. But I assure you if it turns out that those whiny brats managed to kill derpy I will change “love and tolerate” to “EXTERMINATE”. And that’s a pinkie pie promise.

      This is as absurd as trying to remove colors from the world to please colorblind who live on mars.
      I hope I’m wrong, I really do, but this doesn’t look promising at all.

    16. If ANYONE should be offended by Derpy, it would be me. I have had eye problems all my life (I have a glass eye) and have been teased MERCILESSLY as a child because of it. A lot of harm was brought upon me by my eyes.

      However, Derpy is a beautiful, fun and caring pony. She has become my favorite. I squealed when she spoke and was so happy! I felt I had a comrade in the Brony community.

      Derpy is not an offensive name in the least. A Derp is a type of Oopsie.

You may not be on iTunes anymore but you will always be in my heart, Derpy. And let's give a big hoof-stomp to Hasbro and The Hub for not caving in to this nonsense.

      That may be a Pinkie Pie promise, but its nowhere near what she'd do. You've seen the shows. When you're dealing with a bully, don't get mad. Throw a party! Be nice to them. If they're a real a**hole, then they'll show it in their actions and make themselves look like a fool.

      Meeting violence and rage with more violence and rage just makes the problem worse. There doesn't need to be a witch hunt or anything like that. Just acceptance and appreciation that the step was taken in the first place.

      I actually approve of a rework of "derpy", give her a decent name, and a little more depth thene just "I'm useless and clumsy and an idiot herp a derp", you want to make her clumsy, fine, you want to make her dumb, fine, but give her some talents, give her some depth, and the name derpy was a bad name if you ask me, that was one bit of fanservice I didn't like at all, they can do better.

    27. Truthfully, I wouldn't be surprised if this were some sort of legal issue. I bet their lawyers finally caught wind of this and are now kicking up a panictizzy about using a fan name - the same kind of issue that causes authors to very adamantly state that they can never, ever, take or even read a fan suggestion. But I was always pretty meh on every name for her - "Bright Eyes"? That just makes me think of Watership Down!

      ...I liked her voice though, since I'm a deep-voiced girl myself. Alas, it'll probably be "fixed" the next time she shows up, to what girls *really* sound like! :(

      Where we seem to be so far:

      1. In the episode entitled "The Last Roundup," Derpy had a speaking role and was specifically referred to by Rainbow Dash as "Derpy."

      2. 99% of Bronies celebrated because Hasbro and Studio B essentially adopted the fans' name for her.

      3. Despite this, there were some people who were upset about the name and portrayal of Derpy, feeling that it was making fun of mentally handicapped individuals. Some of these people apparently started a petition or wrote Hasbro to complain.

      4. With no explanation, Apple recently yanked "The Last Roundup" from the iTunes store.

      5. Within the same time frame, the WeLoveFine shop began changing product titles/descriptions to remove the name "Derpy." There was also an anonymous tip from, supposedly from a WeLoveFine employee, stating that this was due to pressure from Hasbro itself.

      6. Tabitha St. Germain's web site has replaced all instances of the word "Derpy" with "____."

      7. Strangely enough, as of right now, we are being told that the version of "The Last Rondoup" that was due for DVD release made it into the DVD without modifications. The episode is still intact with the reference to "Derpy" on the HUB web site.

      Based on what is going on, it would seem that there is currently some issue with the name "Derpy." Some people believe that Hasbro is caving to the people who don't like the name/depiction. On the other hand, other say that there could potentially be separate legal issues (such as licensing or the fact that it was a fan-created name) with the name.

      We have not received an official statement from Hasbro, Studio B, Apple, WeLoveFine, or anyone else yet.

    38. I'm thinking that some parents saw their kids watching this, and thought that Rainbow Dash was calling Derpy retarded, since derpy is another word you can use for that. I knew what the intent was from the makers of the show, but anyone outside the fan-base may not know about the fan name, and could come to that conclusion. Probably wasn't smart to throw in that part of the fandom into the show from the start.

      ReplyDelete
    39. I'm one of those people who didn't like it when our beloved cross eyed blondie got canonized as a retard with an unflattering name on top of already being used for slap stick comedy. It just seemed so incredibly mean cluster of things to put on a single character.
      I would have happily accepted canon Derpy if they had bothered to canonize something positive about her fandom character. I'll be happy if they ever show her e.g., being good at her job (what ever that may be) or having friends who are not just barely tolerating her.

      Instead of complaining, I coped with my disappointment by adjusting my head canon (and my private fan fic. writing project) to include mentally handicapped Derpy Hooves as identical twin of gifted Ditzy Doo, so problem solved.

    42. @Pandaborg101 The very first instance of 'derpy' I ever heard was on South Park in the title of the final fake Rod Schneider movie preview the boys were listening to as they tried to get Kenny's soul out of Cartman. The last words in the really long wierd title were 'Derpy Dumb'. 'Derp' was used practically every other word throughout the fake movie preview.

      So where were all these butt-hurt losers back then? I'll tell you, it was SOUTH PARK!! They knew better than to go after those guys! When anyone has tried to sue them (as Scientology did, as it usually does when someone offends them) they just came back hitting harder with the 'Tom Cruise in the Closet' episode!

      They think they can harass our poor mail mare because she's in a little kids show.

      BUT WE'LL SHOW THEM WHO'S BOSS!! Tar and feather 'em! Ride 'em outta town on a rail! CALL THEM WITCHES AND BURN THEM AT THE STAKE!!!

    43. @PwnyBrony32 Tell me about it. I recall the lecture I got 25 years ago after calling another kid a jerkoff for bullying me. My parents were so angry that I would use such a word! My response, "So instead of name-calling as a retort, should I just stab him in the back?" That made them realize the name-calling wasn't such a bad response after all.

      Nowadays, I'd have ended up in counselling and have to explain I was merely reflecting upon the absurdity of my parent's arguments. But back then things weren't so PC and kids didn't actually kill each other.

      Today's world IS utterly screwed up. Take it from someone who took notes for comparison.

    46. I'm confused.

      The people complaining that "derpy" is a connotation for "stupid, mentally disabled, etc." are, on average, fine with her being called "Ditzy Doo".

      .. Couldn't "ditzy" be considered a slur for "stupid, clueless, etc"? Isn't that just as bad?

      ReplyDelete
    47. My two bits here.

      Durpy's real name is ditzy correct. but is often called Derpy because of her well expression maybe it's a thing in Equestria to call someone derpy.

      Ah well I my self did not like her voice and thought they made her appear a little too stupid.

      but seriously too far people

    48. ..........Jesus christ on a cracker, everyone needs to chill the bloody heck out.

      For one. It may be MLP:FiM, but it's still just a dang cartoon. Second. You guys all got along PERFECTLY FINE before she spoke, or her name was officially changed to Derpy Hooves. OHHHH my goodness, so they might change it back to Ditzy. Big freaking whoop. She didn't have a huge part in the show anyways. You hardly ever saw her. She'll more then likely just go back to being an obscure background pony like before, that no one besides us bronies notice, and things will return to the way they were.

      So some stupid soccer mom or some stupid people online complained and made Hasbro rethink things. Oh my god, are we all really so immature that we're going to throw a complete and total hissy fit like if they were trying to pass SOPA again through MLP?

      Honestly, while the possibility of this derpy fiasco being real makes me sad, I'm more embarressed, upset, and ashamed by the way the brony fandom is acting than I am of Hasbro possibly pulling her character. I mean REALLY. We're all supposed to be adults here. Isn't that wtf all of you scream you are when someone tries to treat you as a child?

    49. This issue has brought so of the best and worst in people... and shown me things about some of you that I may rather not have known about anyone in the fandom. People are getting angry, others are accusing each other of things, and I find myself unwilling to talk about anything related to how kids ACTUALLY viewed the episode since I DON'T HAVE ONE, nor do I know parents whose children watch the show... and I feel the rest of you may be making conjectures without knowledge of how the target demographic ACTUALLY RESPONDED. I wish I had sighted even ONE of you talking about your child going to school that Monday and calling one of the "special" students "Derpy" OR NOT DOING SO. Then that would tell me something with substance. I've yet to hear anything outside of individual perceptions, such as this useless statement from myself below.

      Personally, I enjoyed the episode and the idea of Derpy being representative of anything besides HERSELF never occurred. It's not like any other derp-eyed pony is necessarily gonna be the same as her... wait a minute, who'd like to see an episode about that?

      Simply put there are a few reasons.

      one it's not possible and indeed unhealthy to "love and tolerate" all the time

      Two the way some people say it makes us seem like people who take this show and fandom to the point of near religion, which makes us look insane.

      and Three, the more I hang around the fandom the more I see how unloving and intolerant it is.

But, all this hate and profanity is never gonna get us anywhere and makes us look like whiny little kids. Let's try to settle this as a mature fanbase that practices the very values the show we care so much about taught us. Try to get all the facts we can. Take a deep breath, sign the petition, express your feelings of why we are so passionate about Derpy, and we can get through this on good terms. Don't let this turn of events degrade our wonderful fandom bronies!

      Besides, everything being put out now says this entire thing was a blatant overreaction by a fan base who needs to remember its roots are that in a television show that has a specific demographic.

      We are not its intended demographic. They've said this before. We're a fun side-effect of it.

      As I said, I like Derpy. I loved Derpy speaking. But there's a lot more stuff to be worried about than her. People just seem to be wanting a place to be "activists", especially when it's not needed.

    66. It makes me feel sad that the relationship between the writers and the fandom might be damaged by this trumped up controversy. I wrote to Hasbro and the Hub separately and politely told them I appreciated the shout out and did not find the name offensive. I think if anyone writes to support Derpy then they should do it in a polite, calm way. If you feel upset enough to cuss, then get all that out of your system before you write them. I think both Derpy Hooves and Ditzy Doo are legitimate fan names and I read plenty of fan fictions where one or the other (or both) were used. Personally I've always preferred Derpy and I was happy to see that chosen as the official canon name. I don't want Hasbro to back out on this now after they did this for us.

    67. @StrangeNoise I appreciate your posts, they're very good and helpful right now. I don't mind if a fan creation calls her Ditzy or Derpy, either name is fine to me. I always kind of liked Derpy better, but I'm fine with either. I don't want Hasbro to change her canon name now because of PC pressure though, because then they'll be stuck with having to second guess everything they want to include, like that episode of South Park that talked about the manatees with idea balls. lol

    68. This is what I sent to Hasbro, I accidentally misspelled "blonde" but I'm sure they'll know what I meant. Don't copy this letter word for word, but you can use it to base your own letters off of if you want to, as an example of a polite letter that addresses the problem.
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      Please keep the name of the gray pegasus with blond hair and a bubbles cutie mark (Derpy)'s name as Derpy. I want this to continue to be her official canon name in the show. As a fan of MLP:FiM, I've enjoyed calling her Derpy or Derpy Hooves for a long time, but when Rainbow Dash actually called her Derpy in a recent episode, I was thrilled! This was acknowledgement from the writers of the show of the fanbase and we very much appreciated this. It's only a vocal minority who have a problem with this name. Please don't change it. Thank you!
    69. We must protect her. Go now! All my fellow Bronies and Pegasisters! Derpy is our creation. If it was up to Hasbro and the main creators, they would have kept her as a simple 'Where's Waldo?' Joke. We gave her the name Derpy, WE made her like muffins, WE decided she was Dinky's mother. WE did these things because we love her! Search the internet and find any link you can to the Save Derpy petition. She needs us and we must hurry to the defense of our blond,ditsy beauty and her adorably awkward eyes. This is my proclamation! Hear my words and take them to heart. Let this be our call to action!
      "Imagine if they did an episode lol where they explained how and why Derpy was in all those awkward places in season 2 xD (she does end up in silly situations with Doctor Whooves no doubt!)"
      That'd be cool actually. Kind of like The Lion King 1 1/2. C:
    72. This is my take on this nonsense
      A. Law is a strange thing, in case any of you have read Lauren Faust's deviantart and seen the description of the MLP Pitch pictures she drew, you'd notice that Hasbro's legal team is very sensitive.
      B. Since it's an open unclaimed thing, the name 'Derpy Hooves', like trollface memes and rage comics, they're also very sensitive about this. Licensing is a strange thing and WLF may have some kind of policy on licensing. This could just be an error in general that any Derpy Hooves merchendise at all was even sold. Using the name 'Ditzy Doo' however is registered (afaik) to Hasbro Inc and therefore they can use that and license it freely.
      3. People. nuff said. People are like this to immaturely jump to conclusions and thus start crap-storms up. So don't expect perfection out of everyone. Friends are not we're humans and we're flawed and we need to accept flaws.
      LIKE FRIENDS DO.
      4. Hasbro works entirely on PR basis. They need their products (MLP toys and licensed merchendise) to be something synonymous with girl playtime, if it is deemed anywhat not completely 210% family oriented, it's trouble and may potentially hurt their sales, so they have to be really careful about using anything that anyone could even REMOTELY percieve as being negative towards their francise. Thus, don't think this thing is going to go away so fast. A boycott from a NIMBY mother who does no research at all and gets MLP seriously bad press will severely hurt Hasbro.
      5. Let's get real here, we in a way asked for this storm.
      Note: Now I'm not sure if swearing isn't appreciated here or not so I'm going to self censor myself anyway.
      Remember folks. It's all about PR. Studio B might care, but Hasbro just wants its money, not to 'make friends'. ANY PR damage even remotely possible is a threat to their capital and most likely will result in extermination.
    74. At this point, it has nothing to do with mental handicaps or retardation, and who gets offended or not.
      JackleApp said on his tumblr, "I'm done making music for this fandom. How can people be so fucking ungrateful?"
      Derpy's grown on us. We don't want to see her go. She's the result of Hasbro recognizing us, recognizing her popularity and request, but which people did they request to represent us? No one but angry flamers.
    75. Derpy has a deep perception problem, with her eyes like that and with people (or pony’s) that have a disability they are self-aware and jock around with there problems. Have the name Derpy Hooves as a nickname she gave to herself because she know she is different to everyone else and should be proud she is like that.
      I myself know about disability because I am 27 and I have big problem with English and doctors have known ideas what’s wrong with me to this day, but I do find ways around to get throw and try to fit in with everyone else.
      Derpy is clumsy, but have her point out that everyone else is clumsy as well and she is smarter then she looks. I don’t want her to change to dramatically if the rumours are true. I love the show and I love Derpy’s cross eyes and playful attitude with the location she popes up in. I hope I have help in some same or form and keep up the good show.
      whats wrong with that na.me
    77. "Derpy" is a little bit insulting. Almost as insulting as "Ditzy".
      If there's a real problem, it's with the combination of a particular physical disability with stupidity, not with the name.
      I find the characters of Snails and Snips much more offensive, especially since they were the only male unicorns in the show when they first appeared. Remember, girls: Boys are stupid and ugly!
    78. Oh shit, I actually went and googled Yamino's dA profile.
      Stack of fuck shit, this is beyond ridiculous. Cockbags spamming insults just because a person voiced different opinion. For the record, I'm indifferent to Derpy or that controversy around her.
      I think MLP fans should really question themselves now whether they want to associate with this fandom.
    79. Can't we just enjoy sharing ANYTHING good anymore without worrying how we can turn it into a cash cow? Don't you remember when real people posted things on YouTube instead of VeVo? Oops I just felt yearning for the past, and I think that emotion is owned by Sony. Oops I made a mistake, that action is owned by General Mills Cereal. I will stop speaking now. Silence is owned by Paul Simon. DERPY FOR LIFE.
    80. There is no rage. There is only D_RP. Silence will fall when the name is spoken.
    81. I know I'm late to comment on this, but the way I see it is that WLF is just trying to play it safe for a while until further news is posted about this, and Apple was afraid of all the hate comments they were getting. I haven't met a single soul who has watched MLP who thought that Derpy was retarded, but just a cute, fun loving, a tad accident prone, character. If those haters would take a second and think, SOME people relate to Derpy on a personal level and that makes them feel good about themselves, but going and making them change a great character could also work on that person's self esteem, making them not feel good enough.
      The ironic thing here is that those people think they're defending those people, yet if you think about it, they're just making it worse, making that person look like a "disgrace" and that they can't be mentioned in public without someone starting an argument.
    85. NOT DERPY! She is the most amazing pony EVER! Just because someone was offended because they included disabled ponies IS NOT OKAY! The same people will see a disabled person on the street and chuck something at him/her! I REFUSE THIS! HOW DARE YOU YOU, YOU, YOU... Sigh, You un-respectful know it all, stuck up LOSERS!
