• Small Update on Derpy Overall

A few things have popped up over the course of the day.  Again we apologize for being slightly vague with it all, right now there are all kinds of rumors coming in from every direction, so we are only taking the stuff that is 100% confirmed.

Right now what we do know:
Until we can get a solid response from Hasbro, or more Derpy take-downs happen, this is the only completely solid evidence we have.  It does sound like some changes to the character overall will happen in the near future.

1. I sense this is more of a marketing ploy from We love fine, rather than Hasbro pressuring them to remove the shirts. Mainly because they changed the "SHE" to "HE" in the description of a shirt, seems awfully elaborate.

Besides Hasbro don't own the name "Derpy" anyway, the person who called Derpy first owns it, whomever that is, don't think anyone knows.

2. Crap, crap, crap, crap, CRAP, the 1% of fans DID go to far with this! D:

3. At this rate, years from now the Last Roundup is going to be a (good) version of the Star Wars Christmas Special - something widely traded over the internet, and thought of as the episode any fan really needs to have gotten a copy of.

4. Fuck you, Yamino and PepperSupreme. Fuck you for ruining our fun.

5. I knew something like this was going to happen when the episode aired ;__;

6. Changes to the character overall? All I can say is le sigh.

7. Well, that's disappointing. But I'll always call her Derpy, even after this whole mess is sorted out. Even during this mess. Hopefully it will be resolved soon.

Can't have no conflict in even the best of fandoms, I suppose.

8. Good thing I bought the season pass on itunes at the beginning. I have it on my computer in all it's Derpy goodness

9. What the fuck is wrong with those people? IT'S A GODDAMN KIDS SHOW!

10. I come to Equestria Daily and watch Ponies to get away from all of this drama. The shoutout to the bronies was incredibly sweet and one of the things that makes this community amazing. I hope this all just blows over soon

11. If Hasbro go through with this I will never buy anything with Hasbro on it again. Regardless of the circumstance.

12. 50% of my comments on EqD have been firsts, Am I a bad person for this? Oh and news on Derpy is always interesting

ReplyDelete
13. This is wrong, people. Sometimes, I can't help but feel people just want to get butthurt over nothing other than getting themselves out there and be recognized, even if the argument holds no water. I for one REFUSE to call her anything other than Derpy.

ReplyDelete
14. I'm not going to lie, I'm seriously confused as heck about all this.

ReplyDelete
15. you have no idea why they did what they did. This is just speculation and fear mongering. They VERY LIKELY pulled "The Last Roundup" so they can generate DVD sales because they know that the bronies love Derpy. And for all we know, they pulled the name Derpy from WLF so they could copyright the name so they can sell official merch. This whole thing reeks of self deprecating lunacy, and it's going to undermine any good will we have with the FiM team.

16. So wait, can anypony tell me what the hay happened? I'm still unclear on just what exactly went down...

ReplyDelete
17. Maybe Studio B stuck Derpy in without informing Hasbro, and Hasbro got mad that they took something from the fandom which could cause legal problems and all that, so they were forced to have to re-do the episode.

20. Urgh. This is seriously getting on my nerves. It's kind of minor overall, so I'll probably get over it, but I just don't see what's making Hasbro do that.

22. if they change her name, it becomes a mode of confirmation. "we acknowledge that Derpy was offensive and a slur against the mentally disabled."
If it is not changed, and remains, the debate can be easily turned to "wait a moment, that's not what we wanted! you're putting words in our mouth! Maybe you should have more respect for the mentally disabled!"
a name change and a such a huge pull away would be like watching the shore pull away before a tsunami hits or something... Hasbro would be shooting itself right in the foot.

23. Thanks alot whoever you f*cking pussies are who complained to hasbro, THANKS ALOT FOR RUINING EVERYTHING DERPY YOU ASSHOLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

24. Poor Derpy...

Need moar muffins

ReplyDelete
25. No, NO NO! This can't be happening!

I've been drawn to another pony. I still love Fluttershy. She is still the cutest. But my heart goes out to Derpy now. I don't know why, but she literally makes me cry (seriously, tears and all). I think it may be because of her eyes. I have had eye problems since I was born. I have an artificial eye. I was teased mercilessly as a youngster, and shunned, much like it seems Derpy is. But she keeps trying. She uses humor as a self-defense mechanism, as I do. Derpy IS me, as I am Derpy.

ReplyDelete
28. So what happened to cause all this nonsense? Who do we talk to to convince that Derpy is a-okay?

ReplyDelete
29. Some people found the portrayal of Derpy Hooves to be offensive and complained. So now Hasbro is over-reacting. Feels bad-man, why can they not love her like we love her... <3

ReplyDelete
30. Did iTunes say why they took the epiode down?

ReplyDelete
31. These people... get them the hell out of my pony.

ReplyDelete
32. I'm disgusted with everyone on every side of this issue. The Pony team gave us a short, fun little shout out, and we turn it into a massive nerd ordeal. Love and Tolerance? Never heard of 'em

ReplyDelete
33. perhaps, what we need is a signed doc from bronies, etc. that says: "we give permission for Hasbro etc. to use the fan-given names of un-named characters"

that might make it a bit easier for them to allow similar kinds of shout-outs

ReplyDelete
34. Reposting this here because holy cow at the rage.

ATTENTION EVERYONE,
I want to take this time to remind you all: Don't be disappointed in WeLoveFine! If Hasbro is telling them to do something, they have to do it. Hasbro owns the legal rights, after all.

That said, do NOT send hate mail, or even low levels of rage to Hasbro! If they are truly acting at all, they are likely acting in response to offended people. This is something they HAVE to address, or else lose reputation in the overall public eye, something that companies always and understandably need to care about.

Take a moment before writing, if you're going to write, and simmer down. Then, write your opinion calmly and civilly. That is the best way to get people to listen to you.

ReplyDelete
37. @Chris Francis Don't hate on Hasbro. They're reacting how any company reacts to negative PR: backpedaling like a mofo. Hate on the people who have some outdated concept of what the phrase "derp" actually means, and have kicked up a stink that's causing problems for everyone.

ReplyDelete
38. I absolutely DETEST emailing a corporation...but Bronies...we NEED to E-mail Hasbro about this...Mass E-mail time, Bronies.

ReplyDelete
39. On the subject of the iTunes removal, has anyone considered that one of those strange detractors against Derpy's appearance might have emailed Apple and said "this episode offends me and is bad for children," prompting Apple to take the episode down while they investigate in order to cover their rears?

Heck, that may also be the reason why We Love Fine is doing what they're doing. Nothing like the whiff of some potential lawsuit to cause people to duck and cover.

ReplyDelete
40. A curse upon you whiners.

Let her be called Derpy and that be the end of it!

I agree with Frostwyrm, we need to send them some form of approval for using our fan-names for background ponies. Just to let them know that we don't mind.

Why do haters have to ruin everything beautiful?

ReplyDelete
41. Show of Hooves, who saw this coming? I knew it was going to happen the moment they decided to call her Derpy in the show. As great as it was Hasbro can not make money off that name because they didn't come up with it and I doubt they could copy write it without getting into some issues. I'm just going to sit back and let things happen. What's the worse they can do changer name?

ReplyDelete
42. This is just stupid. I want to see letters. It looks like everyone's reporting and reacting on rumours, but there aren't any notices that have been released to the public. None that I've heard of.
I smell trolls.

ReplyDelete
43. I hate this P.C. shit, seriously. This is what happens when people get excessively butthurt over an episode. Fuck.

ReplyDelete
44. Ahhh, so THAT'S what happened. Well guys, it looks like we've got some hunting to do. Anyone who said they'd complain about it being offensive needs to have their name recorded and put onto a wall of shame. Their names shall be those of the forsaken that took a shot at their own fandom and the great people at Studio B, and quite possibly put a criplling dent in it, over a misunderstanding. Let the hunt begin!

ReplyDelete
45. I said this on the last post and I'll say it here: the damage has been done. No matter what they do, Derpy is Derpy. We will continue to use that name because that's what we know her as. This changes nothing in the grand scheme.

ReplyDelete
46. This is why the fandom can't have nice things.

ReplyDelete
47. so who's yamino and peppersupreme?

ReplyDelete
48. she doesn't need a rename just a better writer that can give her a solid episode that shows the real heart waqrming Derpy Hoozes and why Rainbow Dash and others keep her around?

Being cross-eyed doesn't make Derpy slow it just makes her have poor depth perception that consequently makes it hard for her to navigate, no doubt even made it tough growing up in school not being able to make out words properly or what the teacher writes on the board?

Derpy has much potential for character growth, and it's easy to explain her being so accident prone. Imagine if they did an episode lol where they explained how and why Derpy was in all those awkward places in season 2 xD (she does end up in silly situations with Doctor Whooves no doubt!)

We love Fine can take down her shirts but I won't be buying anything from them ever again (outside the Derpy Hooves shirt)

ReplyDelete
49. Oi, so this is still going on, eh? Damn. While I think the anti-Derpy attitude some have taken is wrong, I suppose Hasbro is a-gonna do what Hasbro is a-gonna do. The Welovefine thing may only be temporary, to (understandably) cover their own butts until this gets worked out. One way or another, we SHOULDN'T respond with pro-Derpy hatemail; that'd make us look just as bad and go no where.

Maybe Derpy won't have a scene again, or maybe The Last Roundup will get rerecorded, or she'll simply get a name change, or who knows what. Or, Celestia forbid, maybe this is the last of the overt fan-shout outs for a while. No matter what, the show's crew gave us our Derpy and we should be grateful.

ReplyDelete
50. I'm not so much worried about them changing her name to Ditzy or not. The fans will always call her Derpy anyway. What I'm worried about is this setting a bad prescient. "We threw in this little gag for the Bronies and it totally blew up in our faces. We better not do anything like that again lest we risk another debacle like this."

ReplyDelete
51. I'm disappointed in people, not for taking offense, but for trying to make it out to be offensive. I'm disappointed that Hasbro didn't simply ignore the complaints.

This whole fiasco is probably going to lead to more corporate oversight, and a general sanitising of the show.

ReplyDelete
52. I support Derpy and all, signed the petition and bought a shirt... But seriously folks, what the fuck?

I thought we were all pretty mature. So why the Hell are there people flipping the fuck out over Derpy in the show? Shouldn't we all know that show canon may not, and likely never will meet full fan expectations?

ReplyDelete

54. So WLF took away the name, and the episode isn't on iTunes. Mildly troubling, but I don't see anything that warrants all the hate so far. Save that for when they completely take the episode off air (which, if there is any hope left in the world, they won't).

Seriously guys? Can't you keep calm and canter on for 5 minutes?

People should not have assumed that Derpy was poking fun at the mentally retarded. That was wrong.

It's also wrong to assume any of the motives Hasbro had for taking the episode off iTunes. They have their reasons, and it's none of your business.

The only people who are ruining anything are the people who freak out and create needless drama out of nothing. Get a grip.

/tirade/

60. No matter what happens , those shitheads at Hasbro will never change how WE named her.

If they ever DARE to change any-fuckin-thing about DERPY , we wont fucking care.

lets change their name to Hascunts then.

ReplyDelete
61. Please tell me this will just blow over eventually...

62. Great. So once again, oversensitive idiots who just can't go a day without being offended by something, ruin the day for everyone who hasn't a giant stick up their ass.

ReplyDelete
63. this is insane, WE LOVE DERPY! how could someone take these in such an offensive way? Derpy is kind and is a screw up but that doesn't mean she's mentally disabled. Please have the mercy to keep her in the show.

ReplyDelete
64. This is not a good day for bronies :c
First they strike my channel with full episodes subtitled in Spanish, and right a minute after that, Derpy's news get posted x(
So many bad things Hasbro, I know people is stupid sometimes, but the majority of us love you guys, please don't screw it up ):

ReplyDelete
65. Everyone calm down. If what Seth posted is true, then we don't know why Hasbro did what they did and it's pointless to make assumptions.

ReplyDelete
66. Hmm...if Hubworld had taken it down too, then I'd be raging. But right now, I'm just utterly confused. If it was taken down because of the Derpy controversy (which may or may not actually BE a controversy, since rumor-mongering has blown it so completely out of proportion), then wouldn't it be gone from Hubworld too?

So...yeah. Confused. A little bit angry that I don't have the episode since I jumped on the Season Pass bandwagon a little bit late, but I'll hold off on the rage until I'm sure it is warranted.

Still, if iTunes isn't going to put it back up, they could at least fix the episode numbering so we don't have two episodes with the same number.

ReplyDelete
67. Really, guys?

I swear, if executive meddling does anything to Derpy, they will lose all of my business for anything related to her. If the DVD has that scene re-dubbed or removed, I will cancel my preorder of it. If description of apparel change her name, I will refuse to buy any of it. I would encourage anyone to do the same, because that is the only language that executives understand.

ReplyDelete
68. Sigh. I wish everyone would just calm down. It's times like these that I wonder how long our little community can last. I love all of you guys, but seriously. Just take it as it comes.     70. I've been watching Dexter's Laboratory recently, and from what I can tell, Derpy's more intelligent than Dee Dee. Like really, there doesn't need to be any real changes made. -.-;

I don't know whether it'll do any good, but I've already written such a letter. Odds are it'll only be seen by a customer service rep, but Hey, hope springs eternal.

Bearing that in mind, actually, if letters are written--love and tolerance, bronies, love and tolerance. Railing and screeching is just going to lead to alienate them, and that's the last thing we need.

ReplyDelete
72. I favor a letter writing campaign. Just give me a name and an address and I will be happy to send a short _hand_ _written_ letter stating why Derpy is empowering and should remain unchanged and unwhitewashed.

ReplyDelete
74. Can we please hold off on bashing Hasbro and Welovefine until we get the full story?

ReplyDelete
75. "Just going to alienate them," I meant. Bah.

ReplyDelete
76. I...But....We did.....How come...*Slaps self* WHAT?! I'm confused. We're changing Derpy's name now? Why? Is this really over other people looking a gift seriously hoarse in the mouth? Why is this a big deal? Do people really think that this is an attack on the mentally disabled? Do they think Ditzy Doo would be better? Cuz it's not. Is this a copyright thing since the name is technically a fan creation? I thought it was posted earlier that the team wasn't hurt at all by the overall lack of hate towards Derpy? I know that in the long run it's not a big deal but if rumors on this page are true then this is one of those stupid things that I just can't wrap my head around. Explanation! I need explanation!

ReplyDelete
77. I'm not going to rage about it, but I have to add my disappointment in the people who made this happen. I really had no preference in what the character was called or how she was portrayed and would have been fine with anything. However, the people who simply couldn't accept it have, I feel, done a great amount of damage to the rest of the fandom with this.

Stirring up controversy about a show we all love is not a good thing, and will only cause Hasbro to put more distance between fans and the show. And taking something that was intended as a sign of affection and throwing it back in the faces of those who made it is just heartbreaking to see from any segment of this fandom.

ReplyDelete
78. Sorry everyone for saying this, but I want to get it off my chest. I would say I was beating a dead horse, but that phrase would have bad connotations in this community.

All we know about Derpy the character is that she has wonky eyes, is accident-prone, has a penchant for showing up in odd places and a somewhat-silly voice. Anyone who thinks this all amounts to ableist slur should think long and hard about what that says about their perception of the disabled community.

(And as someone who has lived their whole life with wonky eyes, fuck you sincerely)

ReplyDelete
79. @AppleJackEquestria

More like "Please have the mercy to not ruin the show by censoring it and turning it back into the over-girly infomercial shit it was before" I swear, We need to set some ground rules for the fandom, so that no two or three morons can pull shit like this ever again, if they even get the chance.

ReplyDelete
80. If Hasbro are thinking about changing Derpy, just don't bother putting her in the show again; well at-least don't let her have a speaking role. We'll remember that one time when derpy talked and everybody pissed moaned.
I blame you bronies, well some of you.

ReplyDelete
81. I can't deal with this right now :(

ReplyDelete
82. This is ludicrous. The thing people don't seem to realize is that this is a cartoon. The animators are not making characters that are actually disabled, and overly-offended people are ruining everyone else's good time.

I doubt this would've happened fifteen years ago, when the moral guardians weren't sticking their noses into everything.

The bloggers are right to defend Derpy. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the name or the character, and it should stay as it is.

ReplyDelete
83. Derpy is seriously an awesome character. In a cartoon no less. The people who are trying to be all Politically Correct about this... I mean wow. I will forever call her "Derpy", and I expect a lot of Bronies will too as well.

We should wait for an official response from Hasbro though.

ReplyDelete
84. It seems to be WeLoveFine and Apple that care more about the fiasco than Hasbro themselves. If anything, Hasbro would be worried about getting sued by people who found it "offensive" or such. This will indeed just blow over with time and be mostly forgotten. And everyone will look back and be like; "Hey, you remember that time everyone went crazy about such and such and blew it out of proportion?" Besides, like I've said before, Derpy being called such was likely a one-time thing just for the fans. It wasn't likely she was going to have the spotlight again.

ReplyDelete
85. no, derpy is my favorite pony, she makes me happy when my day has been terrible, she cant change...

ReplyDelete
86. It was a fun little shoutout from Hasbro to the community which has now been potentially ruined, why do people have to spoil our fun?
In any case she'll always be Derpy to me even if she's renamed.

I hate this fandom, it's rapid decay has been shocking and pathetic.

Fucking overly sensitive crybabies and people who think "LOVE AND TOLERANCE" means we have to tolerate stupidity ruined it.

93. you know, as a kid who does nothing but make jokes, this hurts. You wanna know why? because I say something perfectly harmless and all my pussy teachers and my idiot parents freak out about it! I quote a funny youtube video that happened to have the word "jacking off" in it, and I get a lecture from my math teacher, telling me that inthe real world people would get offended and kill me or something. These anti-derpy bronies and clueless parents are the same way!!!! to them I say WHY SO SERIOUS?!?!? ALL WERE DOING IS HAVING A BIT OF FUN, AND YOU BUTTHURT F*CKTARDS HAVE TO GO AND RUIN IT!!!!!! I DON'T WANT US TO LOOK STUPID OR WEIRD IN FRONT OF HASBRO, I WANT TO SHOW THEM WERE WORTH THE TROUBLE!!!!!! YET THESE MORONS ARE PREVENTING THAT FROM HAPPENING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHY
SO
SERIOUS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!??????????????????

94. Sheesh. And I thought the limits to Political Correctness effecting the show was silencing the word "Loser" on Treehouse Broadcasts.

ReplyDelete
95. I wonder if this could be a sitcom-style misunderstanding. Maybe iTunes taking down the episode is for something unrelated. Like Desilu Studios or whoever owns I Love Lucy protesting the use of their conveyor belt gag. That may not be copyrighted anymore, but it's possible.

97. What I've learned from all this is that if I ever find something genuinely offensive, I should keep my mouth shut and let it keep going on, because being offended is offensive.

Agree with them or not, you really think the people who felt offended didn't believe they genuinely had reason to? Is all this anger and screaming really going to make them see your point?

ReplyDelete
98. This whole thing is ugly and just ridiculous.

And you're offensive to your -former- peers, and the kind staff members who went to such lengths to show us they love us! You are a DISGRACE to bronydom!

Maybe WeLoveFine got taken down because they don't have an agreement with Hasbro to use Derpy?

And if they change her name to Ditzy - that name is no better than Derpy. Since she has a "blonde" mane, that is making her the stereotypical "Ditzy Blonde".

Derpy needs ro be Derpy

I swear, this fandom is SO much like the ponies on the show. The least sign of trouble is met with screams, fainting couches, and bio-hazard suits.

ReplyDelete
111. I don't know if this was just an oversight or intentional, but when you hover over the images of the renamed items, there are still messages such as "I Love Derpy", "Derpy Cuite Mark" and "Derped". Just wanted to put that out there in case it meant something.

ReplyDelete
112. I guess the trolls won this one. Hasbro is going to kill off Derpy.

ReplyDelete
113. I cant believe this is actually happening :(

ReplyDelete
114. Im going to assume, that despite the massive outcry for Derpy, the parents might win this one.

Didnt we go through something like this before with DVDs? we asked for a DVD box set or something like that, & Hasbro replied "we'll do this if the parents want the box set.", or of the like. remember, this is a show intended for little girls, & because of that, the parents are on their side.

The parents might not EVER know that the reason Derpy is called Derpy. That reason is because of the FANDOM on the internet, something which MANY, MANY parents today dont use! They dont associate "Derp" with mistakes & uh-ohs! They associate "Derp" with how they grew up using that term. just like "LOL" used to mean "Lots of Love", now it means "Laugh out Loud". They still use the old terms they grew up with.

If they called her Ditzy like they did in the Winter Wrap Up episode, would the response be the same? i doubt it.

Though i will Derpy, & maybe Ditzy, this change might happen. Carrot Top was called Golden Harvest, Lyra became Heartstrings. We dont even KNOW what Doctor Whooves will become.

ReplyDelete

To allow a tiny minority to influence one's impression of an entire fandom is - no offense - completely unreasonable, and basically means that that minority wins. 99% of the fandom loved what Studio B did with Derpy. What about them?

ReplyDelete
132. As soon as Dash uttered the word D-E-R-P-Y, I saw this storm coming. A very small percentage of it is probably coming from legitimately upset viewers over the portrayal of a "slow" pony, but a vast majority is definitely coming from butt-hurt fans, those who feel betrayed because they wanted Ditzy to be canon, and those who just generally despise her.

I can kind of see where the latter are coming from. I'm not a huge fan of Derpy's, the MUFFINS bit was old after just my first week in the fandom, but I still tolerate it, just because I chose to ignore it. Some people lack the mental ability to do this apparently. What a sad little world they must live in.

But I don't see much developing from this to be honest, I'm sure it's just a precautionary knee-jerk reaction to make sure they cover all their bases. It will be business as usual in a week or so.

136. @Reekz Basically, some anonymous "informant" said something that no one cares about, The Last Roundup was removed from iTunes (possibly in anticipation of the DVD release), The name "Ditzy" is being removed from WeLoveFine, and about fifty people signed a petition to get rid of Derpy, against which some people (hundreds, if not over a thousand by now) are signing counter-petitions.

It's just a bunch of confusion, questionable information, online yelling, and run-on sentences.

138. I was going to rage and bash the people but then i realized something. We're making a really big stink out of this when we barely have any news. In my opinion, "derp" doesn't mean anything like "stupid" or "disabled". Simply put, it means "oops!" . And that's how Derpy came around. An "oops" That's all I'm saying and if stuff happens, it happens.

ReplyDelete
139. @Flutteryay
I love you too. If there's one thing the fandom needs right now, it's blanket accusations against a large and diverse group of people.

ReplyDelete
148. @Pinstar

Exactly a simple aaasahaoutout for the fans. Granted they could of done a pinch of research at least (like idk at least find out Derpy was a SHE lol)

I LOVE The Last Round-Up, I downloaded the hell out of it when itunes took down the episode (so much for supporting the show if they won't even let you buy what you like!)

Derpy was energetic, full of life and brimming with great chram. I can't believe so many haters out there took it upon themselves over a name and a misunderstanding drive so much chaos.

1) Derpy is just as much a part of the Weather Team and community as any other Pony!

2) She speaks coherently (was given a male voice by accident that only made her seem retarded because we knew her as a she)

3) Her eye-condition just makes her accident prone NOT retarded! she was, I repeat, she was NOT portrayed as retarded in that episode! just very accident prone!

Just like Granny Smith said... ONE BAD APPLE SPOILS THE WHOLE BUNCH! and the ones responsible should pat themselves on the back for destroying ANY chance of Future Derpy appearances.

I wouldn't be surprised if Hasbro would end up telling Studio B to not include Derpy on the show wall-eye'd anymore, or shown at all!

FACT for those RETARDED fanatics (if it's about a name and stuff) don't even hold your breath for a Ditzy rename! because guess what? DITZY is no less offensive then DERPY! so if they rename Derpy you can bet your sorry little flank it WON'T be renamed Ditzy!

ReplyDelete
149. Goodness, I'm getting tired of all this insanity.

Folks who are acting like them getting rid of Derpy is going to be the end of the world: Calm down! I want Derpy to stay (almost) as much as you do, but even if this doesn't go the way we want it, the show will still go on. Studio B will, unfortunately, just have to be more careful with its shout outs to us. I don't like that any more than you, but it's not the end of everything brony as we know it.

Sit back and wait instead of freaking out. People are working on getting explanations.

ReplyDelete
150. Guys don't blame Hasbro, they're doing what they should if they believe something they're doing is offensive. Blame the people who went whining to PR at Hasbro. >.<

ReplyDelete
151. Step back for a second and pretend you're not a brony. "Derpy" is a word that's frequently used in place of "retarded", and there are a lot of people who do not like that word. So when they see their kid watching a show and a character called Derpy pops up, speaking in a stereotypically durr-hey voice and breaking shit, they get a little upset. They don't know a thing about the history of the character, they don't know how much the fandom genuinely adores her. So they complain.

I love Derpy, and I'm glad they included her. But the second she opened her mouth you knew someone was going to be upset. And remember, Hasbro is still making more money off of the parents of little girls than they are off us.

ReplyDelete
152. This whole "Derpy Hooves protest" fiasco has all the makings of what could be the best MLP episode ever.

Think about it: Derpy is teased and bullied because of the perception that she's stupid and the fact that she has a disability (in this case, depth perception). Maybe even Rainbow Dash is part of it for a while. But through love, perseverance, and a possible heroic display from Derpy, she reveals her true colors. And of course, Dash can write to the princess about what she learned.

ReplyDelete
153. I am a mom and Derpy is not offensive

ReplyDelete
154. The fact that the episode is still up on the Hubworld website speaks volumes, surely if this was a censorship order from the top that would be the absolute first thing to go. Everyone seems to have already forgotten that Tabitha St. Germain and Amy Rogers have both said that they received very little complaints and allot of support, if I remember correctly Tabitha said that she found the show of support a bit odd as we were apologizing for something that never really happened as far as she was concerned.

Equally I find the self shaming of the brony community a bit odd, maybe a few people did complain but I have found nothing put very small groups of people. All you need to do is look at the comments under this story and other similar posts to see that the vast majority of the brony community see the derpy scene in 'the last roundup' as the incredibly loving shout out to the fans that it was.

ReplyDelete
155. I am a mom and Derpy is not offensive

ReplyDelete
156. Stay calm, everypony. The worst thing that could happen is that they probably won't say her name in the show anymore. But still, people need to cool down and see the innocence in Studio B's actions. Just a simple shoutout to the fans, and I seriously don't see how some people would be offended by it.

ReplyDelete
157. Yeesh. All you people overreacting. ALL of you.
...

Seriously, it's an animation glitch that the fandom latched onto. You're really going to get torn up over a pair of crossed eyes?

And you bloggers here? Is hate really going to improve anything? People are claiming Derpy is offensive, and somehow I doubt that having the people SUPPORTING the name go into a frothing, cursing rage over their complaints is going to help their opinion of the matter.

ReplyDelete
158. I for one am glad that Hasbro has listened to genuine complaints instead of the wild noise coming from the Derpy supporters. They wouldn't be changing things if they didn't think it was a serious issue, which it is.

ReplyDelete
169. How the 99% defines derp:
A facial expression in which the eyes are in differing direction, bugged out, or googly-eyed; used to represent clumsiness or a sudden goofy mistake.
Also, in a verb: A goofy mistake, an innocent blunder, or momentary lapse of judgement.

I don't even want to know what those 1% bronies were thinking when they complained. Probably nothing though.
I hope I don't regret using the terms 1% and 99%, this isn't occupy lol. OR IS IT? (no).

ReplyDelete
170. I admit that I was a bit surprised (pleasantly) when they did announce she'd been renamed Derpy. Before MLP, the word was used in some pretty "off message" ways in the sorts of communities you keep small kids away from. The thing to remember is that it's a nonsense word -- a bit of slang. And slang is constantly changing. All I know is that if I Google "derpy" right now, the first hit refers to our Derpy. So I say we've appropriated this word and, if not changed its meaning, at least legitimized its use outside of juvenile "herpa-derp, y u so #$@%ing stupid you derpy @#$#%" type comments you see in other places on the net.

But always remember, Hasbro is a company and has to respond to complaints, no matter how poorly they are made. And when they respond, they have to keep in mind their (stated) target audience.

TL;DR I LOVE DERPY I HOPE SHE STAYS DERPY BUT NO MATTER WHAT SHE'LL ALWAYS BE DERPY IN OUR HEARTS AND ONLINE!

ReplyDelete
171. @ytook All that you say is completely true, which is why I was hoping we would never hear of the supposed controversy ever again. As many others here have said, we all should just continue to keep a cool head, even amidst the odd occurrences. I don't like some of what's going on, but the best thing is STILL to simply remain positive to the shows creators.

ReplyDelete
172. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Seriously, I can't believe this. What happened to majority rule? Derpy is not an insult or offensive or anything like that. All I can say is this better be some kind of misunderstanding to do with the DVD release or something and not a couple of trolls having their way. I love studio B, but Hasbro has been getting on my nerves for years. SMH...

ReplyDelete
173. Oh god I love the unbridled (get it bridle, it's a pun)RAGE in here. Rage is good for the soul like laughing, or crying, or eating a tub of ice cream.

ReplyDelete
174. I think we are going to need to wait and watch this one, until we get official word from Hasbro (and possibly We Love Fine explaining the name change).

I also think we need to have a little in house witch hunt, Anonymous style... But I never was very good at that whole "love and tolerance" thing. It's also 2am, so my opinion might change some time after the hangover.

You know, out of curiosity I decided to research the origins of the word derp, I couldn't once find a single instance pre-meme where it was deliberately used as a derogatory term, nor could I find any reference, pre-meme status of it being used to describe people with a mental disability.

So why is this happening?

ReplyDelete
175. My feelings on this are just because we want "Derpy" to not refer to someone who is mentally disabled doesn't mean that that it won't. I've head this word used negatively before and that the word was taken away by people who want to use it negatively which has ruined it for everyone. You can't take the hate away from this word anymore than you can keep the word "gay" from referring to homosexuals. It always means "merry, cheerful, jolly". But the negative side ruins it.

Hasbro should be backing away from this, they shouldn't risk having a character potentially being associated with something like this. Before they said her name "officially" she has been called "Bright Eyes" (never seen it but I've heard about it) and "Ditzy Doo" too. We can deal with a little name change.

Anyway, I would have thought that our fan-base would appreciate continuity more and have this pony named "Ditzy Doo" which would have connected her to the pony in Winter Wrap Up.

I just don't think saying "Derpy" can be said without feeling some kind guilt because of what it can mean. It isn't our fault it means that, but until a LOT of time has past, it is what it is.
