• Show Your Love, Buy A Derpy Shirt Today!

Good afternoon, everypony. I'm here to talk to you about something near and dear to my heart: little Derpy Hooves. This young mare needs love, hugs, and 3 square muffins a day to stay healthy, but she can't do it alone. She needs your help. There's some rumbling and shaking going on, and the bottom line is that our favorite mailmare is in trouble. Here, have a better petition than the one that was up before.

Show her how much you care by purchasing any one of the many awesome, stylish, and high quality shirts from We Love Fine. Act quickly. Act today! This may be your very last chance to score yourself a Derpy shirt, so please. Don't wait.

Dollars speak louder than words. So show Derpy how much we love her, and keep her smiling for all of us.

Quick Edit: Derpy has been renamed on Welovefine to Ditzy and Simply "pony cutie mark".

    1. To voice haters: Look if they had Harvey Firestein voice her, you could complain. Otherwise, please join the Derpy lovefest! Derpy's voice in the Last Rounderp was great.
To accusers of ableism: Derpy is perfect. If you believe she's mentally disabled, you have committed a worse DERP than she ever has. Derpy is clumsy an awkward BUT...clumsy and awkward should not automatically equal mentally retarded in anypony's mind.

    2. So much confusion and different information. To be honest, either way I don't see too much harm in signing the petition. Even if Hasbro hasn't considered purging Derpy. It'll still show how much we love her.
But for now, I think I'll step out until some clearer information appears. It's always the best way to handle these "Internet has been enraged" situations.

    3. Honestly I can't believe people have complained (over what is essentially a gift) so much that they've basically ruined it for everyone else. Thanks for being so destructive and ungrateful guys.

    4. This got to the second page. Enough for confusion and fear. We need to stay aside and calm a bit about this, and i only know of one way to do that, so here goes nothing:

    6. Signed, but damn it, I just want to know what's going on.

Is it that bad? I thought things were perfectly fine and only like 5 people had actually complained and everyone was making a big deal out of nothing. Is that not the case now?

Why haven't we been told the reason for this post? (And there better be a good one, this controversy was supposed to be long dead.)

      ReplyDelete
    7. All of this fuss over a background character that hardly has any effect on the show? Why have them changed her name when it's already been said in the show?I haven't even heard anything about Hasbro considering changing her name.

      ReplyDelete
    8. What harm is there if it's just a misunderstanding? It's not like we are threatening Hasbro. We are just voicing the opinion of the masses in petition against the minority that the Studio listened and apologized to. We believe they've been doing a great job all this time and that they shouldn't change a thing. What's wrong with that?

      ReplyDelete
    9. @The Numberman No kidding. I think this has gone over the top, and we don't even have "hard evidence" on the whole matter. And like I keep saying over and over, I fear for our relationship with Hasbro as a result of this.

      ReplyDelete
    10. @GuerreroPerdido

This is exactly how I feel. Even if the petition ends up being relatively pointless in that Derpy's not actually under attack, it'll definitely show everyone at Hasbro exactly how appreciative we are of their little shout out to us. And really, I don't think that's a bad thing. People are putting a lot of VERY kind comments toward them on their signatures.

      ReplyDelete
    11. Oh good lord. STOP FREAKING OUT EVERYBODY!

We have no real information, for all we know nothing is even happening.

Honestly, Hasbro doesn't care about the Derpy vs Ditzy debate, the only thing they might care about it is if they can get a trademark on the name so that they can sell us stuff.

Just relax people. You can panic when there is something to panic about.

"Ditzy Doo is a better regular pony-like name. Derpy Hooves sounds like a 'herr derr' name"

This is your opinion, man. You shouldn't act as if you were the King of the Truth.

      ReplyDelete
    13. @GuerreroPerdido Exactly, and if it means that they're all the more aware of how much we appreciate the character all the better.

      ReplyDelete
    14. They shouldn't have made her "talk thick". She sound's like a stereotype. She's already got the look and the behavior, they should have made her sound normal.

And would you care to post some proof to this statement?

"Honestly, Hasbro doesn't care about the Derpy vs Ditzy debate, the only thing they might care about it is if they can get a trademark on the name so that they can sell us stuff."
This. Why can't people understand such a simple this. It's not like Hasbro listens to internet petitions or *GASP* would be offended and starts to hate the fandom because of it. Get real, the business doesn't work this way.

To be honest, the recent HP laptop post and this one are among the worst cases of news reporting on EqD. The admins should either post some facts or post an apology and delete petitions.

      ReplyDelete
    18. @The Numberman

Why are you assuming it's Bronies?

I know that petition which 50 people signed but where's this evidence that Bronies were the reason for this?

Most likely it was older people/parents who sent snailmail to Hasbro that made them take notice.

Because when does Hasbro ever listen to Bronies much less a small minority of Bronies?

      ReplyDelete
    19. @doozier That's pretty much what I thought when I saw this. Unless some new development we are all unaware of sprang up, we should really stop scaring ourselves every ten minutes.

    20. This is why we cannot have nice things. As soon as someone complains without anything to back up what they say, the poor shlubs at Hasbro's legal have to act like freshmen pledging a frat and take what they say seriously. It's like they're congressmen or something.......

    23. Ok. Best outcome of the case. Hasbro sees how popular Derpy is. Hasbro allows for Derpy to stay. But maybe with another scene showing that she isn't dumb/retarded and more instead clumsy, or they ask to change the voice. Tabitha, knowing know that Derpy is a Filly and not a Colt, uses her incredible vocal range to give her a better voice. Pretty much everyone wins. Lets hope it happens.

I don't want to see the most popular name get thrown out because a handful of idiots decided it was offensive and were pretentious enough to write in to Hasbro and demand a change. 31. You know, even if this whole thing is a hoax, I say we go ahead with the petition. That way if someone does complain, at least they have some sort of tangible proof that the petty complaints are FAR outweighed by the actual fans of the show.
It cant hurt to be ready, because honestly, this whole situation is just begging for an over-sensitive, easily offended parent to step in and ruin it for everybody else.

What does that prove though? It just means she's not being actively removed from the DVD's.

And the Last Roundup is still missing from iTunes.

      ReplyDelete
    38. Did anyone stop to think that Hasbro might be just asking welovefine to pull the Derpy stuff because of possible copyright issues? Derpy wasn't official until that episode, so there probably wasn't any copyright stuff to do with her, but now that she is truly official, maybe welovefine just doesn't have the legal right to sell Derpy stuff? Im not 100% sure, just an idea I had, and I have no idea how copyright stuff goes so I might just be totally wrong.

Also, for those thinking it's another stupid rumor, TLR is still off itunes and it's basically been confirmed. Still a chance it's a rumor but are we willing to risk derpy when it's no skin off our back to sign petitions and such?

      ReplyDelete
    41. @Flutterfan

If they REALLY wanted to remove Derpy, they would have removed the episode from the DVD. It'd be ridiculous to be trying to remove Derpy from everywhere else, but still have it on the mass-produced DVD.

Honestly, this whole thing is just a dumb rumor blown way out of proportion. I was skeptical at "anonymous source".

@Kroezan Possible, but unlikely. All the products are officially licensed based on the franchise, not per-character.

    44. This whole Derpy vs Ditzy mess is bringing too much drama on this website. All because some people now think that cartoon characters with goofy personality traits mean that they have mental problems, and that the word derp is an offensive term to mentally challenged people. Then there is the people who are complaining that they didn't choose the name they wanted, and act like it's because they think the name is mean. This whole thing is just ridiculous.

      ReplyDelete
    45. @Shadowluma

Perfect example as well. Even if this whole thing never happened, another possibility is the execs being "scared they'll offend somebody" and force them to change it. Pure speculation, but tell me that's not plausible.

With a petition full of god knows how many signatures, the actual people who work on the show at least have some proof and at least a little power to say: "If you make us change her name, you're going to piss of X,000 paying customers.

In any case, it certainly cant hurt. And hey, maybe it will give them some hint of how many bronies there actually are :)

      ReplyDelete
    46. @CityFlyer502

If all the DVDs are already made, it would cost Hasbro a lot of money to destroy all those DVDs, edit that one scene that lasts only about a minute, and make new DVDs. It wouldn't be good business sense for them to do it.

    51. It would suck so hard if the unholy spawn of Satan ironically known as Political "Correctness" kills Derpy. I'd still support Hasbro if they went through with this (if it was true in the first place), but seriously, fuck all who would oppose our Muffin Queen.

      ReplyDelete
    52. See, this is why we need to confirm information like this and not pounce on it immediately. This is not the FIRST time that we, as a community, have panicked for no reason. Far from it.
Nor will it be the last. But we owe it to ourselves to not take everything at face value, because otherwise we end up looking stupid.

So it seems, once again, it was just trolls. Like it always is.

      ReplyDelete
    53. @UL

Bad timing... they remove the name and suddenly sales shoot up from the people rushing to buy. Wrong message much?

      ReplyDelete
    55. On the page for the Derpy "My Bad" shirt, the description says "He Speaks!" He?

      ReplyDelete
    56. So wait, this isn't just a really stupid joke? Seriously? I can't even...comprehend the stupidity of this. After all Studio B and Hasbro has done for this community. After they do something no studio has EVER done before: take a character the fans have named and given a personality, then officially name her, give her a voice, and give her more air-time than I think anyone expected. And all some people can do is complain. Some people really can't help but take the most amazing things for granted. Please, just go actually look up the word 'derp': as Sibsy said, it really is NOT meant as an insult. Derpy is just a klutz, not an idiot.

Also, I REALLY question the wisdom of posting something like this unless it really is that huge. Otherwise, it's just helping MAKE it huge and a big deal when it shouldn't even be an issue AT ALL.

      ReplyDelete
    57. I don't like this. Not. One. Bit.

      ReplyDelete
    58. @Flutterfan I suppose I might be jumping the gun. But as far as I know a few bronies have been complaining loudly.

      ReplyDelete
    59. Gonna keep the petition alive, regardless of the Twitter comments posted. It's true they may be good news, but they're not a complete turn-around of this issue.

And like I said before, I fully agree that even if we end up being wrong, this petition still isn't pointless. It displays how much we love the shout outs given to us by the folks working on the show. It supports them doing it, even. And besides, many of the people commenting on the petition are doing so very kindly.

This is a good thing, folks, no matter what the outcome of this 'anonymous source's' legitimacy is. We're making a stand not against Hasbro, remember, but against the people whose misconceptions could easily lead to breaking the strongest symbol of our bond with the show's creators. By the time this is posted, we'll have broken 2000. And we'll likely make the 2.5k mark, and even more than that. Let's keep it going.

I will only shut down the petition if it's fully confirmed that Derpy is absolutely safe.

    64. WeLoveFine has removed all references to "Derpy" from their product titles. They replaced it with "Pony" and other words now.

Check the search results and compare to the new product names: https://encrypted.google.com/search?q=welovefine+derpy

      I heart Derpy -> I heart Pony
Have a Derpy day -> Have a pony day
      Derpy bags -> Cutesy Bags

I think that's at least conformation for WeLoveFine being forced to remove Derpy from their catalogue.

      ReplyDelete
    65. And BTW, anyone who thinks that Ditzy Doo is a LESS "offesnive" name than Derpy, you're wrong!

A "Ditz" is also someone who is labled stupid and unfortunately, mainly BLONDE girls. What color mane does Depy have? Blonde. What's her cutie mark...? Bubbles. Guess what? There's another phrase used, "BUBBLE headed beach Bllonde". Si as you can see it could be very offensive to those who are blonde by labeling them too...v.v

Betcha didn't think of that didja? - And despite being a blonde, I'm not offended. Despite having 3 cousins all with mental disabilities, Idon't find Derpy offensive either, because I KNOW what it means.

    67. So wait... So this isn't a hoax.

Good lord I am disappointed in this community. Then again -and flame me if you want, point stands- should I ever have expected the majority of people who watch a little girl's show about magical ponies to have spine? Since when did people get so fucking sensitive? Characters like Goofy and Ed never generated this kind of bullshit.

Some people really are too dumb to live.

    68. @Nostalgia Schmaltz

I expect that WeLoveFine's email is going to be... rather messy for the next few days. I shall do my part and contribute as well. I'm sick of bad apples spoiling the bunch.

      Perhaps a few possibilities:

      A) This is a hoax by WeLoveFine to increase derpy sales (although that theory sort of fell apart when they changed the name)

      B) WeLoveFine is having a scared reaction to what appeared to be an "angry mob" wanting derpys name changed.

      C) or Hasbro execs have stepped in and are already doing their damage. I don't know what direct influence they have over WeLoveFine, but they do own the IP, so its definitely possible.

      ReplyDelete
    69. @Matoro

Nobody knows what Ditzy Doo looks like. She is a real pony, but has, for all we know, never actually appeared on screen. It can no longer be argued that Derpy is Ditzy, because she is now canonically Derpy. However there is a background pony with the name Ditzy Doo; it's just not Derpy.

      ReplyDelete
    70. This whole thing is starting to give me very mixed feelings. If the result is Ditzy as official name I should be happy, as I personally don't like the name Derpy even though fully support those that do, but more importantly because it would make her the same pony that flew the wrong way during Winter Wrap-up.

Still though, this is not the way I would have wanted it to happen and it makes me sad to think that's the kind of world we live in. I watch pony to make myself happy and to forget about all the stupid shit in the world. I don't want this taint to be allowed to come to pass.

Hey, hey, don't hide! That's perfectly fine, and not at all what this issue is about.

What it's about is folks getting upset about misconceptions on the name Derpy, and those misconceptions threatening to take away something that was an amazing shout out to our little community here.

I use the term 'little' lightly, of course, heh.

Another one, changed to "Ditzy Doo".

Actually if this is the compromise that's fine with me. Who cares if it's named Ditzy in the description?

As long as they can use the picture of Derpy then it really doesn't matter, better than a all-out ban on Derpy/Ditzy/whatever.

I hope bronies don't give WeLoveFine too hard a time about this. Clearly they were pressured by Hasbro.

As for the show it's really irrelevant since I don't see Derpy getting a speaking part ever again. Ditzy is never going to be canon anyway.

As long as we can return to the status quo before Last Roundup that's good enough for me.

    76. Okay folks. If you're buying shirts, buy the ones that say Derpy on them, even though WLF is changing the name on the website, it's gonna cost them a lot to change the actual shirts.

ADDITIONALLY, I've confirmed through Brian Ward of Shout! Factory that The Pony Express DVD is in the factory right now, and they haven't made any changes to the master copy as given to them. Meaning that The Last Roundup won't be edited or removed to hide Derpy.

I know right?Ditzy is way more offensive than derpy. Then people will complain about her being a stereotypical blond.

These are definitions I have found of derp and ditz:

Derp:A simple, undefined reply when an ignorant comment or action is made

Ditz:A scatterbrained person, especially a woman.

Derp refers to a stupid or silly action while ditz refers to a stupid person.

    78. @Impious

It's probably not bronies who are complaining. Its probably a small group of moms resembling something to the effect of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD, a perfect acronym if there ever was one). Most bronies I know are very laid back.

Also, imagine how execs respond to:
"I'm a college student and I find Derpy offensive"

      as compared to:
"My 5 year old son saw Derpy and now my poor baby is traumatized! I'm boycotting your products and suing you!"

Paranoid business men tend to respond badly to that.

These are indeed sad times. Why can't people find comic humor as something funny anymore and must automatically assume it's ableist or making fun of disabled people? It sickens me on two levels: 1) We can't enjoy this show because people are making such a big deal out of something so trivial, and 2) There isn't even anything trivial to make a big deal out of in the first place.

I miss the pre-Ditzy/Derpy arguement dys. Why can't people realize that her name is just Derpy, and live with it? It does NOT mean stupid or handicapped. She is merely a comic relief character.

It sounds perfectly fine as a nickname, but Ditzy sounds better as a name. However I do not support the people flying off the handle because Derpy did not end up exactly how THEY wanted. While I prefer the fanon voice, Derpy's official voice is fine. This is really an issue of people being angry for selfish reasons of it not being the Derpy THEY wanted, or people being oversensitive and reading TOO FAR into a wonderful gesture made by Hasbro and Studio B. Simmer down everypony, and don't bite the hand that feeds you.

      ReplyDelete
    85. Ah crud, there go my reasons for not panicking. Remove references to Derpy from the clothing line? SAY IT ISN'T SO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      ReplyDelete
    86. Okay, if Hasbro really asked WeLoveFine to change names of the shirts, the reason is probably related to trademark priority right. In this case, the names of those shirts would probably return back to 'Derpy' when trademark registration process is complete.

      Chu talkin' bout "almost"?

I'd live in Equestria any day :D

Great idea. I'm going to go smash my head against a wall until I think that's where I am!

    89. @Flutterfan

That's something I've always wanted to address my fellow Christians about. Just because homosexuals adopted the rainbow as their symbol of pride doesn't mean that every single use of it counts as "the homogay agenda" in action. I love Rainbow Dash. She's probably my third favorite pony beyond Twilight and Apple Bloom.

Anyway, I'm saddened that people in this world are too damn sensitive that they take every single instance of characters like Derpy to be making fun of mentally challenged people.

      ReplyDelete
    90. @Shantara

Seems like awfully coincidental timing, don't you think?

I would say that's plausible if WeLoveFine *started* the panic, but this seems to be a new development.

      ReplyDelete
    91. @Ropera

THANK YOU! I'm glad that at least someone agree's with me and udnerstands what I'm saying!

What's worse calling an ACTION stupid or a PERSON? It's okay to be a DITZ but NOT a DERP?

      ReplyDelete
    92. I see that OP post has been edited to mention the merch rename. How about adding links to Twitter posts? Let's keep the reporting balanced and not blow the situation out of proportion.

      ReplyDelete
    93. Hmm, well played. That, and humans are stupid. I keep trying to find faith in our species but I am dumbfounded every day by how stupid people are.

I'm holding on to hope that WeLoveFine is just temporarily removing the name Derpy so that they can get Hasbro's permission, since this could just mean that Hasbro is moving forward and trademarking Derpy's name. Afterwards, WeLoveFine could just get permission to use Derpy. Hope, hope and pray. Otherwise... Yeah, fuck people and their sensitivities.

      ReplyDelete
    94. @Nostalgia Schmaltz

Did you see the link I posted, that one says "Ditzy Doo".

      http://www.welovefine.com/product.php?id_product=1456

And all I'm saying is that they're still selling apparel with the image of Derpy even if they're changing the titles and descriptions. Which I personally am ok with.

      ReplyDelete
    95. NO. DON'T YOU FUCKING CHANGE HER NAME TO DITZY WELOVEFINE.

      ReplyDelete
    96. @Impious

I hope to Celestia your trademark theory is correct.

      ReplyDelete
    97. Seriously, Hasbro's hate mail is going to skyrocket considering Ditzy is more offensive then Derpy.

      ReplyDelete
    98. @Flutterfan

Yeah, there are one or two "Ditzy" changes, but a majority of them have been changed to general terms without a name.

I'm just highly disturbed by this. SOMEthing big is going on behind the scenes, and WeLoveFine isn't telling us about it for whatever reason. (Twitter account said they "don't know".)

      ReplyDelete
    99. Words fail me. This is incredibly disappointing, WeLoveFine.

      ReplyDelete
    100. @Impious I kind of had a theory along those lines. Maybe since it's pretty much official now, something like this has to be done.

For the moment, all we can do is wait for some kind of "press release" or something that'll give us a clue as to what the hay is going on.

      ReplyDelete
    101. "Derp" is not a real word according to the top most-reputable dictionaries out there. "Ditz" on the other hand; is.
Furthermore, "Derp" as according to our cultural connotation is on a similar level to "D'oh". "Ditz" on the other hand, has an officiated meaning, and it's not something someone wants to be called.

Let's face it: "Ditzy" is far more offensive than "Derpy" could ever be.

      ReplyDelete
    102. I used my DA journal page to get a bunch more people to sign the petition.

People visit my DA page for a Derpy-centric story I'm writing, so I tend to get a lot of pro-derpy people to help me out from there.

Still can't tell how big this is, but it doesn't hurt to bring Derpy more support.

      ReplyDelete
    103. @Impious

Yeah, people claim that our generation is more sophisticated than any other in history. I'd like to call BS on that. We complain about every little damn thing, like the name and nature of a certain mare, for instance. I'm disgusted by the human race right now. I'm gonna go invent a ponifying machine and transform into my stallion alter ego.

      ReplyDelete
    104. Has the petition been sent already? I really want a response from Hasbro. I'm nervous.

      ReplyDelete
    105. @Callia

The people complaining obviously don't now the definitions of either word. Some of them probably think that Ditzy would be better because it's a more familiar word but it's also a really offensive term.Especially to women and the pony in question is female. So if her name was to be changed it would literally mean stupid hooves.Derpy would literally mean stupid/silly acting hooves.

I for one think that stupid acting is less offensive than actually stupid. But either way people will still complain. If her name is changed then their would be petitions about her being a blond girl stereotype.

So there really is no point in changing her name, just leave it alone.

      ReplyDelete
    106. Look, can we chill the fuck out with this mob mentality? Hasbro produces the show, so it's their call. And all this HURR RAGE DURR does nothing except make us look bad.

      ReplyDelete
    107. Again, hold on to the hope that this just means that Hasbro is trademarking Derpy's name, which would mean that there is NOTHING to worry about, in fact that would make things better because Derpy's name would be official. Official Derpy merch? Oh God please yes.

If Derpy's name is now trademarked by Hasbro, that means that others cannot make money off of it until they get permission to use her name and likeness from Hasbro.

      If not... Well, goddamnit.

      ReplyDelete
    108. @Callia
I hate to bring this up, I really do, but...

'Ditz' may be a more specifically defined term and refer to persons, while 'derp' is more vaguely defined and refers to actions, but last time I checked dumb blond jokes were still considered mostly socially acceptable while jokes in any way referencing those with actual mental handicaps are not.

That said, I'm still disgusted with this whole situation and that something that should have been taken purely as a loving shoutout to the Brony community has become a source strife and discontent.

      ReplyDelete
    109. Yea, what Shantara said. How do we even know that this has anything to do with anything other than the actual name "Derpy"?
This could very well be just ordinary trade mark business, handled in an ordinary way, just like when Lauren Faust had to rename some of the characters in her original pitch because Hasbro didn't own the names any longer.

Hasbro can't actually licence official "Derpy" products until they have completed a registration of the trademark, wich could take time.

Lets not jump to all sorts of conclusions, and lets not get all petition-ish before we have actual knowledge of just what's going on.

      ReplyDelete
    110. This sure took off, and there still is not a lot of information actually regarding it. Not going to get involved in this yet, as not much to go off of.

Especially since nothing has come directly from Hasbro yet.

      ReplyDelete
    111. PHOE CALM DOWN...

Seriously theres still plenty of products that say Derpy on the site.

      ReplyDelete
    112. Well, one thing's for sure. "Ditzy" is a whole lot more offensive than "Derpy".

      ReplyDelete
    113. ATTENTION EVERYONE,
I want to take this time to remind you all: Don't be disappointed in WeLoveFine! If Hasbro is telling them to do something, they have to do it. Hasbro owns the legal rights, after all.

That said, do NOT send hate mail, or even low levels of rage to Hasbro! If they are truly acting at all, they are likely acting in response to offended people. This is something they HAVE to address, or else lose reputation in the overall public eye, something that companies always and understandably need to care about.

Take a moment before writing, if you're going to write, and simmer down. Then, write your opinion calmly and civilly. That is the best way to get people to listen to you.

      ReplyDelete
    114. @brilliantspecter Even though I'm disturbed by the changes at WeLoveFine, I completely agree. A politely worded petition is one thing, but raging at Hasbro and the rest surely won't lead to anything good.

      ReplyDelete
    115. Ugh. This is why we can't have nice things, internet.

      ReplyDelete
    116. I sense this is more of a marketing ploy from We love fine, rather than Hasbro pressuring them to remove the shirts. Mainly because they changed the "SHE" to "HE" in the description of a shirt, seems awfully elaborate.

Besides Hasbro don't own the name "Derpy" anyway, the person who called Derpy first owns it, whomever that is, don't think anyone knows.

      ReplyDelete
    117. This comment has been removed by the author.

      ReplyDelete
    118. This whole thing reminds me of the 'mare do well' episode with people raging over the Mane 6 trolling Rainbow Dash.

Simmer down. Whatever happens, she will still be known as Derpy to us. I have yet to see any Brony refer to Lyra as 'Heartstrings' other than as a surname.

      ReplyDelete
    119. @brilliantspecter THIS, GUYS! THIS!

Remember, level heads prevail. You won't come across well in the eyes of whoever is on the other end of that email address if you're even mildly raging. If you're writing, you're pretty much representing us. Don't give them the wrong impression. PLEASE!!!

      ReplyDelete
    120. @Evine

Copyright doesn't really work that way. Anybody can copyright anything unless the person who created it objects. And that person needs *solid* proof that they created it. Its very difficult to prove original ownership of an idea.

Given that Derpy was born on a loose 4chan posting, I doubt that kind of evidence exists.

      ReplyDelete
    121. Evine: That's not true. That's not true at all. Whoever called her Derpy first never copyrighted it, I'm sure. Hasbro officially canonized the name, and they could copyright it, too, if they were planning on doing things with it.

      To the rest of everyone:
I'm working on sending the petition to Hasbro, what email should I use? Anyone know?

      ReplyDelete
    122. We Love Fine changed the name?

Fuck them. They will not get my money.

      ReplyDelete
    123. Maybe we should counter with: "I'm someone who has been mischaracterized as a ditzy blond and I find the blond clumsy pony offensive and I'm disappointed that you would reinforce the dumb blond stereotype."

Then again, we'd end up with a green-haired Derpy.

      ReplyDelete
    124. @ Krieve

That was kinda sorta justified though, since the moral of that episode was just ridiculously flawed and borderline disturbing.

      ReplyDelete
    125. It appears that WeLoveFine's servers are slowing down (at least from my POV). Could be a massive spike in traffic... the kinda traffic you don't want.

      ReplyDelete
    126. NO. JUST NO.

DERPY = DERPY = ALWAYS DERPY.

      No matter what happens.

      ReplyDelete
    127. @Impious

      I remember being very confused.

"Wait... so, the moral is... if our friends become cocky, we should 1-up them?"

      ReplyDelete
    128. For all the complaining about people being offended by Derpy, I have yet to actually see ANY comments actually complaining about Derpy! Christ guys, settle down. If anything, this may be drawing attention to an issue that never existed in the first place. I think the only reason Hasbro or anyone thinks people are offended by Derpy is because of people telling them to not listen to people offended by Derpy.

I would hate to lose Derpy, but I would hate it more if it was caused by the Bronies themselves causing a rucus over a small puff of smoke.

      ReplyDelete
    129. @Evine

We do, actually. Derpy Hooves was named by "Dr. Foreigner" on 4chan.

      ReplyDelete
    130. @Railgun
There were/are comments in the Episode Discussion when the episode first came out, and if I remember correctly, some of the crew mentioned receiving hate mail, but I'm not 100% o that.

      ReplyDelete
    131. @Railgun Unfortunately, it's a little late I think for that kind of restraint. The damage, it would seem, has been done. The tiny backlash to Derpy was countered with an enormous show of support for Derpy, but it looks like all that did was make the issue look controversial. What a mess.

      ReplyDelete
    132. You know what...I'm just going to ignore this until some real info comes up.

      ReplyDelete
    133. That is why I don't like fanfiction. Most people can't accept that fan stories are fake and not canon.

There is no time travelling Doctor Hooves, there is no love affairs all around Ponyville, Celestia is not a troll/ evil overlord, the only thing canon about Ditzy Doo is that there is a pagasus with that name and not long ago there was no Derpy.

Don't get me wrong, I find many comics about Derpy, Trollestia and stuff hilarious but too many peoples take those stuff too seriously. "But I prefer the voice from some random person on youtube." Well, too bad. This character doesn't sound like that, deal with it.

I'm sarting to be ashamed of this fandom. The drama is starting to be ridiculous and tiresome.

      ReplyDelete
    134. Signed the petition for what it's worth.

I really want this to be put behind us, with Derpy staying Derpy. This should never have been an issue, whatever the true cause of the protests against Derpy, be it a vocal minority, or the work of trolls, is unknown, and to be frank, trivial detail. The important matter here is that Derpy is in danger, and she must be protected.

Trolls or no trolls, the task of saving Derpy is very real.

      ReplyDelete
    135. Just sign the polite petition (if you're so inclined) and simmer down. We know more now than when this article was originally posted, but it's still not much.

      ReplyDelete
    136. Thanks to all the fantards that felt the need to shit on something beautiful. I hope every one of you gets hit by a bus.

      ReplyDelete
    137. well this is a complete and fucking disgrace - i couldn't even get to the site before it was changed - still can't - seems its just so overloaded with people it won't even load for me... I've gotten 1 shirt from them before... but after this .. i don't I'll bother to buy anything from them again.... just pathetic

      ReplyDelete
    138. I just bought a Vinyl Scratch shirt before this was posted. Dammit, even though I have two Derpy shirts already from WLF, I'll have to try to buy the Robocop one since I had my eye on it for a while.

      ReplyDelete
    139. C'mon folks, seriously. This isn't WLF's fault. They have to do it if they're being told to do it, since Hasbro is giving them permission to sell pony stuff. Don't be angry with them.

      ReplyDelete
    140. I have to admit, I feel kinda sorry for Hasbro right now. They pretty much can't win in this situation.

      ReplyDelete
    141. I'd like to make a plee. Could we please separate the issues here?

This shouldn't be a debate about Derpy-vs-Ditzy. I seriously doubt Hasbro would make any fuss over a minor fan debate, which if I recall from the comments that immediately followed the episode, went by with rather minimal fuss from the Brony community.

More likely this is the result of overzealous parents and activists-groups that are crying foul over a perceived slander against the mentally impaired. Those people aren't Bronies, lets not let there actions drive a wedge into our community. I don't want to see this community reduced to infighting over what is most likely the result of the actions of outsiders.

      ReplyDelete
    142. I absolutely fell in love with Derpy as she was portrayed in "The Last Roundup". I do NOT want her changed - why fix what ain't broken? I have signed the petition, and will be purchasing a Derpy shirt tonight, even though I usually stick with Mickey Mouse when it comes to character shirts. Hope it helps.

      ReplyDelete
    143. @62835fdc-3fb1-11e1-9fc6-000bcdcb2996 That's how I've felt about it from the beginning. The biggest reason I became a fan was because of the community. If there are further news posts related to this issue, I hope we approach it calmly, even if something is happening that we don't like. At any rate, most of us aren't really irritated at anyone other than the (very) few people who were said to have complained to Hasbro. Even if Hasbro did let such people get to them, it's not the end of the world. Have patience everypony.

      ReplyDelete
    144. Honestly, mates, I have to say many of you seem to be a little confused on how actually the show is produced, and who's who.

HASBRO makes toys, not cartoons. HASBRO Studios co-produces the show with a commission to Studio B/DHX, the former working on the scripts and the latter on the actual animation/voice acting. What does it mean? There are several very separate entities at work here.
At the HASBRO headquarters, the toymakers know next to nothing about the show itself: they give some guidelines but the studios had and have a remarkable creative freedom to work with. If it weren't the case, Rainbow Dash would still be dressing in style.

Now, the money comes from the toys, not the actual broadcasts: this is normal as The Hub is pretty much just a rolling commercial for HASBRO's physical products.
Derpy was purely born from the studios, without any input from HASBRO corporate. Specifically, she was born - as we all know - from an animation error (which means it happened at DHX, completely out of HASBRO - even studios - control). As she almost always was a voiceless background character who didn't actually take part in the scripts, it was mainly a DHX running joke, with little to no input from the writers at HASBRO Studios.

Her popularity, though, brought both teams to escalate her relevance from a Where's Waldo joke to an actual scripted sketch, in a memorable wink to the fandom.
Unfortunately, while the two studios know and understand very well the relevance of our fandom (it's their line of work), the same does not necessarily go for the real HASBRO headquarters. Audience ratings are an immediate feedback for those who make tv shows, but for those who make toys there's no such feedback: the only thing that counts is the actual sales, and those take financial years to give some reliable data.
To HASBRO the thousands of bronies would only matter if they were to make money from commercials during the show, but as they (pretty much) don't, they don't give a damn. It's actually a much more traditional market, most of them just don't understand the phenomenon and are unable to fully comprehend how profitable it can be (it's normal, it's how the industry works).

Now, what the problem here is, is that while the studios per-se can just laugh at some hate-mail, as it's common in their line of work as is just everyday's bread and butter, the same does not go for the "real" HASBRO. To them, understandably, a negative feedback on a pretty delicate subject is a very valid reason to freak out a bit. Just as they have little means to assess how much the adult fandom can and will turn out to be profitable, they have little means to measure how damaging to their sales such backlash could be.

You've got to understand this very well before deciding to WHO you're actually writing/petioning. On one side, the studios are probably as baffled as we are, on the other the toymakers are at a loss, and those who say adding fuel to the fire can only be counterproductive are probably far from being wrong.

      ReplyDelete
    145. You've got also to understand 50 stuck ups matter far more than a thousand fans, when those 50 may end being backed up by "politcal-correctness" and actually some pretty influental minority-rights associations. The hate from such individuals and associations is, again, pretty common with children tv shows (just think about the religious fanatics, which unfortunately are more influental than we would like to believe), but it's rarely a serious issue for "normal" shows, making a direct profit from the actual number of viewers. In such a marketing environment, a controversial issue is actually a moneymaker, as it can only bring more interest in the product, aka more views, aka more income.
When you make toys, however, no matter how effectively relevant the brony fandom will turn out to be on the sales figures, as of now you have to consider that most of your products are bought by moms for their children. And that's, as we know, it's not a category renowned to always "keep up with the times", if that's how we want to call it.

We have after all to admit: while WE may very well know how "DERP" is a slang term widely used with irony, it's meaning IS very close to "retard". It was actually created (or at the very least brought into public renown and usage) by Matt Stone and Trey Parker, of South Park fame (but before that show itself), so you can imagine it was intended as being a little bit mean. And even if it wasn't, we know how kids act, they are adorable little arseholes, everything can and will be used against their victims. Just as racial or sexual slurs, you can bet kids do use the word "derp" as an insult in that very meaning.
While I know that's certainly not anyone's fault, if I were to be the father of a kid with problems who is being bullied with the use of that term, I understand how I could be somewhat bothered in hearing it used so lightheartedly in that show my kid watches, and directed towards a character who may not officialy be "mentally challenged" but surely could be interpreted as such.
In the end *I* would resolve that it's actually the best way to "exorcize" the whole thing: the more you use it and talk about it as it's not a big deal, the less "power" the word has, and the less appeal it has to those who would use it as a slur. After all, as long as there will be naive people repeating to our kids that "one should not be made fun of or bullied because of his skin color", kids will get that that's actually a subject for which one *could* be bullied, so it's actually sort of a big deal. Ever wondered why nobody bullies anyone 'cause of their hair color? 'Cause nobody gives a damn, one way or the other, and it would just feel dumb.
Unfortunaly, most parents wouldn't come to the same conclusion. Most people just aren't so... well... reasonable, especially when their kid's well being is at stake.

When I watched the episode, I was astonished they used that name: not just because of its meaning in recognizing us, but 'cause I knew it would cause a shitstorm and I was very surprised they took the chance.
And while I'm all for keeping it, and I know it would be in the long run a dumb decision (too late anyway, stepping back now can only hurt both "parties" even more) from a company which has yet to adapt to the market of the new millennia, I can understand - though maybe not justify - if HASBRO is really going for it.
After all, what can you blame them for? For being derps... ;)

      ReplyDelete
    146. This is VERY sad.

I mean, I still prefer Ditzy Doo for her actual canon name, because its cutesey, was already stablished in-show, and still keeps with her personality.

But the sole concept of completely removing all references to her Derpy Whooves nickname for "political correctness" is both incredibly shortsighted and baffling.

If I can't have things my way and have her be both DERPY AND DITZY, then DERPY is the one that should be kept.

      ReplyDelete
    147. Woah, I got the shirt I ordered like last week after I saw this.

      ReplyDelete
    148. Wait now If this petition gets passed, does this meen that her name will be Derpy and not Ditzy or her name is Ditzy and Derpy is a nick name?

      ReplyDelete
    149. Signed the petition and bought a shirt :)

      ReplyDelete
    150. I for one like the name Derpy, and I hope they keep it. I did think her voice could have been better, more like she sounds in those fan-made Dr. Hooves things. But I definitely hope they keep the name Derpy. Derpy is awesome!

      ReplyDelete
    151. I'm hoping that her name will be switched to Ditzy. Derpy is just a stupid and unoriginal name.

      ReplyDelete
    152. This is ridiculous.

      Ditzy has a purple mane.
      Derpy has a yellow mane.

Why doesn't anypony remember that simple distinction? Do they think Derpy dyed her mane purple for the Winter Wrap-Up or something?

      ReplyDelete
    153. I signed, and bought the shirt with the "Derpy Speaks!" button as well. 1/21/12, NEVAR FORGET.

      ReplyDelete
    154. I might prefer the name Ditzy, but I see no reason why I have to force people to call her differently. If you want to call her Derpy, call her Derpy. In the spirit of love and tolerance, I may not wholeheartedly agree with you, but I will fight for your right to call her what you want.

      ReplyDelete
    155. I love how people complain about a name being supposedly offensive (even though it isn't) and then turn around and say that they don't want a show to be nothing but happiness and sunshine like g3.5, contradicting much?

      ReplyDelete
    156. We bought 2 shirts! I'll be wearing 'em, no matter if summer or winter!!

      ReplyDelete
    157. I'm tending to agree with most of these guys. I don't want us to get up in arms over something. But when something received as much positive viewer feedback as Derpy did, taking it away isn't just wrong, it's bound to reflect poorly on ratings. So I'm signing the petition just for posterity's sake, even though I generally never sign something like this

      ReplyDelete
    158. Please everyone sign it. Even if there is no debate its better safe then losing our favorite muffin loving mailmare.

      ReplyDelete
    159. Hell I bought 5 Derpy shirts today because of this.

4 for me and one for my little sister.

      ReplyDelete
    160. Just ordered 9 shirts, 5 of them derpy shirts.

      ReplyDelete
    161. I know signing petitions typically isn't effective against anything at all, usually, so I'll admit that I'm not confident this will have an effect on anything.

However, as we don't even have any word from Hasbro on why anything is happening, it's hard to say what exactly it is we're fighting.

I'll sign it anyway, but I certainly do hope someone at least notices that there is overwhelmingly positive support for the character.

I bought a shirt because WeLoveFine shirts are awesome, and it's another way to support the show.

To those who refuse buy WeLoveFine shirts, please understand that they are one of the few places to sell shirts officially licensed by Hasbro. If Hasbro says "no", they have to listen.

Let's at least wait to hear what Hasbro has to say. And even if it's something we may not like, it truly is in our best interest to remain friendly and polite about it. If you want to be respected, you must act with respect to others.

    166. Wow. It's amazing how ridiculous people can be at times. Censoring an innocently clumsy cartoon character because they believe she's mocking the mentally handicapped? I'm sorry but that seems a insane to me. The creators of the show done an amazing thing by including Derpy in those few seconds. It was a generous nudge to the fandom and made the most of us very happy. And now this bullshit happens because of endless complaints? I mean if you have this twisted perception that the character is poking fun at the mentally disabled, fine. I don't understand it, but fine. Have your opinions. But don't protest and send emails to the creators of the fucking show! What the fuck is that about!? I'll most definitely sign any petition and buy every single Derpy shirt there is if it means anything.

    167. @Coyote "Blahblah over-generalisation blahblah hatin' blah lackofpunctuation blah".

I repeat, try harder please. The whole "waah all bronies are the same and retarded" thing is kinda weak. ;)

    168. Petition signed, with warm and open-minded argumentation included. Thank You for informing me on this matter, EqD.

    169. ...also, shouldn't the petition link be stickied somewhere around the top of the news..?

    170. And this is why I always say that Lyra/Bon bon shippers should Never EVER want that pairing to be canon... because this same thing will happen x a 1000

    171. Canon Derpy is not a mailmare, nor does she eat muffins.

I think people are probably overreacting to what's likely just a minor mistake at iTunes. The episode will be back up soon and we'll all have a good laugh about it.

    172. Are you bucking kidding me: $85 to ship to the UK? That's a rip-off.

Even though Im not a super huge fan of Derpy, theres no reason for her name to go away... Keep everything the way it is XD

I did think of that, actually! That's why I prefer to call her 'Dizzy Doo'.

    176. I wish I could buy a Derpy shirt, but unfortunately I can't right now... >.< I hope that I can soon. Oh, Derpy... ;_; *hugs her* I hope everything will be okay. I'd love to support you.

I'm tempted to make some plushies for her...

    177. Derpy made a fun add on to show even as a background character. The mail mare bit is a fans thing but it shows that they don't think she was mentally disabled. I have not seen ONE good character in a cartoon that was mentally disabled in anyway be it just stupid or slow as must play them off as, that people actually loved even tho she only had maybe 3-5 sec a show.

There are cartoons with worst ideas and even more stupid characters (Spongebob Squarepants) that give kids the worst ideas ever but why change them, there loved to.... So back to the name, changing shows that your spineless. If ever parent comes down on you for the characters in a cartoon they don't like then there well be NO cartoons at all.

There has been so much cartoon violence that slip by you (for some reason a MAN can get beaten to death in a cartoon, but good forbid if its a woman getting beaten to death) and now ONE simple little pony name Derpy with a small problem, what ever it maybe and you ready the firing squad....

If you go back in time and watch some of the older cartoons that came out (MLP G1 and G2 as examples) you can believe Derpy is very normal compared.

You know i loved sesame street it was the best show ever to me even when i got to old for it. But then one stupid day 'someone' said Bert and Ernie were gay because they were two grow men sleeping in the same room. The whole time i watched the show i never though that way about them tell that 'someone' said it.... Your like that 'someone' Hasbro... what your going to make Derpy disappear because 'someone' made you THINK about the character in a way it wasn't intended to be. Or are you going to go the same rout as sesame street and bend to that 'someones' well.

if all this start because of http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/derp
      Then thats life

    178. @Phoe
From what I've heard it has nothing to do with offending people, it's a copyright claim to the WORD "Derpy" itself by a clothing manufacturer in NJ

      ReplyDelete
    179. If Derpy's name isn't considered "correct" for having a meaning of silliness, you might as well change the names of other beloved cartoon characters like Goofy, Dopey and Daffy while you're at it.
