• A Look into Derpy From Kreoss

    Source: Pixelkitties
Kreoss over on Deviant art (an FiM Animator from Topdraw) dropped a bit of information on the Derpy change tonight.  Apparently we wont be seeing a complete axing of the derp eyes in future episodes.

    Quote:
On the issue on Derpy whether she'll have the same Derp face expression and stuff. As an animator of the show, rest assured, she'll be fine.
He also goes into detail about not pointing fingers and blaming people about this (Something you should all probably listen to!).

Check out his entire message on the Deviant Art page here, or after the break!

There is also an initiative going on for here, find that here

It seems there has been alot of buzz about Derpy being "fixed". I saw the New version of Derpy in "The Last Round-Up" and I do admit it didn't settle well with me. I still enjoyed the original. I didn't like the reason why they had her change. It didn't seem at all offensive in my opinion. When I first saw the scene in the animatic, I literally burst with joy. But I had a feeling that it might not settle with some fans and some people. Especially since people already have their own version of Derpy and people might get the wrong idea of her character.

Its not often that cartoons show fan content. Cause sometimes when you include Fan content, it usually can result to something negative (to fans or to others). And sometimes it also endangers the identity/essence of the show. Or if people like it, they will probably expect a lot more.To the point they might expect TOO much. So you could imagine my surprise when they decided to name Derpy and give her a voice.

Derpy has became more than just some fancy Easter egg in the show. She's became an Icon, a symbol to the fans of MLP:FIM. Though Derpy was created in a studio, her character was created by the fans.  You can probably say that she represents all Bronies everywhere. Fans have enjoyed Derpy whenever they see her in the background until the point when she talked. The entire studio loves her as well. I was there in one of those Livestream chatrooms when people first heard her talk. It was quite entertaining how happy people were. So its no surprise to see people get really upset by this.

In a way, I understand why majority of fans are upset but blaming, pointing fingers and throwing hate around is not the way to do this. You're forgetting your own motto "Love and Tolerance". You bronies are one of inspiration and our greatest achievement. Don't sully your name by spreading Hate and intolerance. Remember, Tolerance is not the same as acceptance. If you are upset with something, display it in a more positive way. You'll get your message across much better than lashing it out with hate. Show some respect. Show some humility.

Oh I also want to address on a artist name Yamino. I've heard that she has been garnered a lot of hate by the Brony Community due to her not liking Derpy's portrayal. Let it be known, that she had NOTHING to do with the sudden change. She expressed an opinion on Derpy. That is all. She did not ask me to do this or anyone on the staff. I had to say this because the hate she's been receiving is unnecessary. So leave her be.

Also don't spam notes and messages to the people who work on the show. You're probably not going to get much out of it.

On the issue on Derpy whether she'll have the same Derp face expression and stuff. As an animator of the show, rest assured, she'll be fine. The show will still go on and I hope you will continue to support the show. Though Derpy is a great character, she is not essentially the reason why the show is awesome (though she is one of the Reasons). If Derpy never existed on that fateful scene in the first episode, would MLP be a bad show? Remember MLP is a great show because for what it is. I didn't know about Derpy until someone from the Studio pointed it out. I hope you'll still enjoy the show no matter what happens.

I hope this message will ease some of your minds. Thank you.

    1. I'm still kind of scared that we live in an age where My Little Pony is getting censored. And what makes if worse is that the replacement voice sounds mentally disabled. Of you're going to censor something because you can't do any research, at least put some effort into it.

Seriously people, we're fighting just cause there was a small issue with some parents, so what? Believe it or not guys but this is a kinds show too ya know. For everyone?

Besides, it was an amazing thing that they made derpy canon in the first place. The didn't have to, they just did as a shout out

Guys, this is EXACTLY what seth is talking about. We forget that Hasbro did this out of their respect for bronies, not cause they had to.

Besides, Derpy will still be in other shows and i doubt that they'll go though the trouble of removing the derp. Plus Derpy is still as she is in the DVD.

It's not the flippin end of the world here everybrony!. Derpy is still who she is, derpy! Something just happened, so WHAT?! Be mature about this, and i'm sure this will blow over. After all hasbro didn't do this just to take it away that i can asure you.

Love and tolerate guys, this is really not that big a deal. It's still Ponies, and we still must respevt hasbro and respect them and eachother. This isn't worth fighting over now.

So commo and sile smile smile! Let's brohoof and watch this incadent blow over as i'm sure it will

    4. All these foals making excuses FOR Hasbro... are in denial...
They're still in so much shock from Hasbro's slap to their face,
that they don't even realize they were hit. WAKE UP!

DHX/Studio B giveth, and Hasbro taketh away!

I LOVE the gifts that DHX/Studio B has shared with us these past 2 years or so. I really do. I will ALWAYS remember their kindness and respect when they gave us Derpy's appearance back in Feeling Pinkie Keen, and when they have her a role in The Last "Rounderp".

Hasbro... Hasbro has been interfering more and more. I get the feeling that now that Lauren is away, they feel they can dip their hands into the cookie jar more. Hasbro slapped all us fans in the face, and they are getting grabbier with the show's content. They don't understand that DHX/Studio B, in collaboration with Lauren Faust MADE the show the hit it is. If they dig into it more and more, it'll become that much harder for DHX/Studio B to work their magic.

I truly do see this as the beginning of the end... Hasbro will interfere more and more till the show is mutated into a G4.5 abomination. Everypony knows how lame G3 was... G3.5 was THAT MUCH WORSE!!!

      What has Hasbro begun!

      Hasbro... 1Guy1Jar.avi yourselves.

    5. i find Rainbow dash offensive. I demand that she is removed from the show! What? I don't need to explain why or how, I'm offended that should be enough. Oh and remove Twilght too, librarians might find her offensive, better safe than sorry. After all they still live forever in your hearts.

The Last roundup was a mistake, Derpy never should have been more than easter egg (even that is more than enough) and Hasbro doesn't own us anything but still... How far are they ready to go? Changing the scene serves no purpose.

Rip the last roundup Derpy, you were too good for this cruel world.

    8. I think Hasbro, likely, is blameless here, or rather is about as blameless as any huge corporation can be when it comes to covering their respective asses. If you don't like what was done to Derpy, ultimately the best thing you can do is REMEMBER.

When you hear about social conservatives making a fuss over a silly "wardrobe malfunction," it might seem harmless to you, but that is a symptom of the same intolerance concerning the mass media that forced the editing Derpy. And let's not let them the other side off the hook here: there are liberals who jump onto anything that might even VAGUELY look like it's attacking some group.

Both sides have made the media into a political football, and that's made the law into a minefield for anyone wanting to broadcast anything other than safe and sanitized programming for kids, stuff like, oh, say the *old* MLP shows, and that's ultimately why we can't have nice Derpy.

The first step towards changing this sad situation is to realize this, and to realize that real change begins from within.

      ReplyDelete
    9. @richfilesPlease, just calm down. You're getting worked up over what is essentially nothing. Tell me, why does it matter if they edited the episode exactly? Does that suddenly mean that the original one never aired and will never be obtainable again? Of course not! It'll even be on the DVD, and can always be viewed on youtube or downloaded from other websites. The fact is, nothing is any different than it normally is/was. She'll remain in the background, as she was before, and won't receive any more speaking lines (thought it's not like there was ever any chance of her reviving more lines anyway). But really, I wouldn't even want her to have any more speaking lines or become a 'regular' character (as in regularly interacts with the mane 6). Once it gets to a certain point it would just become fan service, which would just kill the whole show and make it really painful to watch. The one shout out they did was great, and by no means am I upset that they did that. It was probably one of the best shout outs in a cartoon show ever, I mean, they used a character that we as a community created. And I'm very appreciative of that and you should be too. Spouting a bunch of hate towards Hasbro won't do anybody any good, and will just escalate things. Just realize that absolutely >>NOTHING<< has changed.

    10. @Mattwo I don't think the ragers are in any position to listen to reason. I've said the same thing over and over again to just calm down, but it's like I'm talking to the wall.

    12. this show rules on it's own merits correct but if our Derpy gets Censored it's a huge bummer she had one chance to really be taken as an actual character and whoever got their panties in a bunch took her away (for the moment dunno what the future will bring) I hope in future episodes she'll get to speak again and be called Derpy, she's my favorite pony

Love and tolerate does not mean you can not express anger or speak out. Even Gilda got tossed out of Ponyville by Rainbow.

I'm furious. I'm furious because I don't just see what Hasbro did to Derpy... I see that hasbro is getting bolder in their willingness to interfere. This will slowly erode the quality of the show.

    15. As disappointed and frustrated as I am that Hasbro caved in to the complaints of a few misguided people, it is nice to see (hear?) a voice of reason in the midst of this controversy. This is be biggest reason for why I love this fandom; there's always a little brony inside my head telling me to calm down when I'm at my most upset!

      True. ...True.

However, a sudden emotional shakedown isn't something that most people just walk off. Something like this hasn't happened in a long time, and people just got extremely shocked by that.

Pointing at Hasbro, DHX, iTunes, Apple... That's not going to solve anything. That's not going to do anything. Pointing at people never solved problems. Never took us anywhere.

The same goes however, to pointing at the community itself when something like this happens. We have been shaken, and people are emotional about it. Emotional behavior means emotional responses. And that does not equal logical arguments and coherency.

Everyone just needs to take a deep breath, and then procceed to talk about this; debate about this, in a civilized, intelligent manner. I know everyone can do just that. Jumping the gun or lashing at everyone and everything is wrong.

We should be ashamed. And that's why we should talk about it.

...And I mean -talk- about it. Like actual people.

I agree entirely with your sentiments in this matter. Of course we should be civil. All the people making crazy bomb threats on the DA thread are obviously not helping. But there's quite a difference between "Love and Tolerate" and "Sit Back and Take It".

Personally I intend to do the former but not the latter. I will voice my grievances to them loudly, but not obnoxiously or threateningly. I won't be an idiot about it, but I have a voice damn it, and my voice is compelled to let them know that I loved Derpy AS Derpy. I will also recommend every last person I know to air their complaints similarly.

I can't say for sure it'll get anything done, but I'll feel a lot better about myself for knowing I told them exactly what I think of this. From the responses on both this thread, the DA one, and hell, the videos of the new voice too: it's quite clear that the community is upset. That most of us really don't want to have to just sit back and live with this change that most of us really do not like at all.

So don't mail Hasbro a bomb threat. That much should be evident. But by all means email them. Tell them you love Derpy. The REAL Derpy. I beg this of each and every one of you, with the specific knowledge in mind that just as fans created her, they may save her too. We flexed our muscle in joy to spread this character and see her brought to life. There is nothing wrong with flexing it now, in civil anger, to see her maintained in the way we feel is right. I hope you find this an agreeable position. I love you all as part of this important and wonderful community. But please, bronies, pegasisters, don't be afraid to stand up for your Derpy.

And like I keep saying over and over again, I'm not that happy with the changes. And I do want to know why this happened. But I'm going to be respectful about it as I try to find out.

    24. The part about this that really bothers me is how some people are downplaying the importance of censorship. What is it with censorship these days?
I'm not going to direct any hate at anyone but I'm still not sure what to do with all of this UNBRIDLED RAGE.

    25. I feel like the people who were complaining were complaining very loudly, but there weren't actually that many of them. More often than not I saw people telling everyone else to stay calm about this whole ordeal, and others followed suit. I think you at Studio B and Hasbro really can trust us, and we can trust you in not letting a few bad apples ruin the entire pot.

There is no other fandom in which one of our characters made it into the canon. The achievements of the brony community are absolutely astounding, and we shouldn't forget what made us so great in the first place.

As I, Kreoss, and many of us are thinking: Love and Tolerance

Oh, but I can read the rage echoing... I can just read it. It's awful, but we are all human beings after all. We have emotions, and when they are shaken, people just don't know how to deal with it.

Or should I say, they do. They release it. In the worst way possible. Towards other people.

I heard a few things about what happened, but I have nothing to prove it. Something about iTunes demanding the changes and Hasbro being backed into a corner, but I got nothing to sustain that.

I wish people weren't so secretive about this stuff, though. It would clarify so much if someone just said "Hey guys! X happened because of Y." But... It doesn't happen, does it...?

In my opinion it would take a melting iceberg to put out the oil fire.

What was the main cause for the change? It is the only thing I'm really interested in about all the hullabaloo this has stirred up.

So far nobody is actually looking into it.

      ReplyDelete
    31. I agree that we all need to be calm down and be rational. I do NOT agree that this means we should sit back and let this outrage happen.

Because its all very well saying 'Don't lay the blame anywhere guys!" When there clearly IS blame to be laid.

There is blame to be laid on the people who started this entire disaster in the first place, with their whining about Derpy being offensive.

Meanwhile genuine, REAL offensives against handicapped people go ignored. Meanwhile, actual handicapped bronies spoke up that they didn't find the scene offensive. Their comments were swept under the rug. Score one for OTT political correctness.

There is blame to be laid on whoever it is that ordered these changes- and I'm not naming any names, since I don't know them- for completely ignoring the vast majority of bronies they claim they are so inspired by, and listening to the small number of clearly irrational 'THERE MUST BE NO REFERENCE TO ANY FORM OF DISABILITY IN THE MEDIA, NO MATTER HOW INNOCENT!' crusaders.

What this guy is basically saying translates to this:

"Ok, so we just punched pretty much the entire brony community in the gut, slapped them in the face, and then spat on them. But you aren't allowed to be angry at us, because that's wrong."

If 'loving and tolerating' means I have to just sit there and smile as I get trampled on, then I don't want to be a brony anymore.

      ReplyDelete
    32. Woah nelly! Hold yer horses!
They changed Derpy, so therefore OBVIOUSLY nothing actually changed!
Lets all sit in a love circle and kiss Hasbro's anus and not blame anyone.

      Dərp?

Hasbro did this. There is no denying the fact. I am angry at them. I am going to express that anger. I want the show to continue, so I will continue to buy merch, but I WILL voice my complaints to the company and express how they have dissatisfied my interests. Censorship offends me. Hasbro erased Derpy's uniqueness. Other people who liked long walks on the peach and erasing differences... Hmm... Hitler??? Seriously, Hasbro has resorted to one of The. Worst. Possible. Things! They used censorship to remove a character's uniqueness. I can't ever forgive that, especially when DHX/Studio B gave us that character as a gift.

      Simple as that.

Also... Hasbro... you are big floppy donkey dicks.

      ReplyDelete
    33. What I'm wondering is if we are somewhat to blame for this - for all we know, Hasbro might have just had a handful of complaints, but then our own over-reaction, spamming, email protests, et al, exaggerated something small into something big.

Its a common think in fandoms for long-term fans to garner a sense of 'possessiveness' or 'quasi ownership' of something they hold dear - Derpy is perhaps more justified than some, but remember that the show is the product of multiple people, and is financed by the money of others. If someone, up in the chain of command, feels a revision needs to be made, then so be it.

Also, we still don't know WHY this was done - there could have been a quiet complaint from some major body, it could have originated from Apple or Hasbro, it might even have been an attempt to placate Bronies who did not like her voice - we cannot say, and so rampant speculation will only further hurt the situation and sour the relationship between ourselves and the producers/financers, which would be "THE WORST, THING, EVER!"

Regardless, guys, Derpy is still in the episode - look at that, she's not been deleted, just massaged a little (I think the original depiction of her was a little over-the-top anyway, so this is a nice tone-down). She's a background character, one that has made multiple cameos as a statement of love for us - the fact that she ever appeared at all is something positive - I did fear when the episode aired that someone, somewhere however had over-reached with Derpy, and that there would be a backlash, but if they were mandated to make changes, then it can be said they did so in a respectful manner.

And, from a Meta-perspective, Derpy is now the definition of Derp: she was created by accident, her original voice was masculine due to a misinterpretation, and now she is metaphorically trying to clean up her mistakes.

      (Derpy hug).

And, for what its worth, my 'Derpy Is Best Pony' T-Shirt arrived in the mail the other day. Cost me £40 almost, due to customs charges, but it was worth it. I wore it to work yesterday under my uniform, and did so with pride.

But there is more to FIM than just Derpy - sit back, take a breath, look at the show, the character, and the situation as a whole, and then just calmly canter on through the awesome world of Equestria.

    34. I'm sorry but I cannot respect people who act out violently about this kind of thing.

This show has a message. They're going against it. But that's not the whole point.

It's not really even about love and tolerance. As I said in my comic, it's more about people lashing out against the people that gave them joy and in some cases, a reason to keep going.

    38. The good news is that the show will go on. The bad news is that I'm a little disappointed and hurt. Also, I didn't think the voice acting was anywhere near as good as the original. I find the new reading kind of wooden where the original definitely had some depth and life. Also, the audio quality of the new lines didn't mesh properly with the audio quality of the rest of the voices. The audio sounded off a little, like it was recorded with a bad microphone. It needs some EQ tweaking. This causes the scene to sound dubbed rather than natural. As a musician, it stuck out like a sore thumb to me. Dropping the name drop, while disappointing and hurtful, doesn't mean a lot to me. The audio quality and voice acting of the scene means more to me.
      Anyway. That's my two bits.

    39. I'd hate to lose the wall-eyed expression, but I won't miss the voice or name.

Seriously, can anyone reasonable defend "Derpy" as a good NAME? Ignoring the fact that it's equivalent to naming someone "Stupid", and the fact that it's a fan made name which clouds the judgement of most folks, how many other characters have been named something related to their actual animal type? It could be that something like this happened... But we have no real way to say. No one actually reveals anything about it... It's rather stressful on a few people that just want to know the truth.

Also, I agree that the company is the one that holds the power on it, and the change isn't... Well... Complete removal. Her name isn't mentioned anymore - and her voice changed - but the worst part of all is that... The delivery sounds... Sad.

I listened to Rainbow Dash's lines, and it sounded like she was self-aware that this wasn't nice. The whole scene didn't feel good to look at. Maybe it's my own emotion that's talking instead of my logic, but it just didn't feel right. It felt bad. And a lot of people felt it.

      @Xeddrief
I don't want to sit down and watch something like this happen, either. No one does. However, yelling and cursing at people isn't doing anyone, anything. If it DOES something, it is simply to paint people with anger and sadness. And that's not cool.

The people at DHX and Hasbro are bronies themselves. They would never have put so much love and interest in us if they weren't. Something must have happened, and they had no control over it.

      ReplyDelete
    44. what bugs me is the reason behind the change. Truthfully, Im not mad, but, I don't agree with it, and have such signed the petition for it. Not out of spite, anger or malice, but simply because I feel the change is wrong, as does my social circle of bronies.

      ReplyDelete
    45. Just a quick rundown of my opinion, reposted from Derpy's megathread :3

Derpy's appearance in the last round-up was the most overt shout out to the Brony community and our influence on the franchise in general to date. So what has this changed, what has Hasbro going back and altering Derpy's appearance done to invalidate this gesture? The answer is nothing.

Now as to why Hasbro took this action? We can only speculate, but if we stand back and calm down; does it make sense for them to spend their time and money altering a scene which they -know- will inevitably cause a fandom backlash just to appease a vocal minority? No it doesn't, it's illogical and Hasbro as a company haven't proven themselves to be so detached from the community as to not expect this reaction. The logical conclusion is that it was changed for either legal reasons or because international distributors were reluctant to pick up season two due to this episode, again it's speculation; but it makes far more sense.

Now I realise comments do not constitute a representation of the entire community, but they do offer an accurate barometer of the general feeling. The reaction from the community in general seems to be immature and exaggerated, at best. Derpy as a character is important to the community, she represents us and our impact on the show, but is this reaction really warranted? Is an angry mob mentality likely to garner support, or just serve to further distance ourselves from the close relationship we have with the artist's involved in the show? We champion the ideals of love and tolerance so often, maybe it would be nice to espouse these ideals for once. Derpy has been recognised as a character by all the artists involved in the show.

We got our shout out, we got our recognition; Derpy will live on through the fandom. This changes nothing.

    46. Hasbro stop listening to the minority. The episode was aired and the damage was done. Besides most of those people will forget about this in a couple of week's.
I mean the Derpy thing was dieing down. Every thing was going back to normal.
But then you do this. You could have honestly releced the un edited episode and no one would have cared.
But now prepare for a storm of angry E-mail's.

      ReplyDelete
    47. @Scott Muir Basically my thoughts, although I would have preferred they not cut Derpy's name.

I actually like the new voice better, but whoever it is did get stuck having to lip-sync it (which forces cadence and makes expression a lot harder), and clearly under hurried and less-than-ideal conditions. Knowing why she was re-reading the part couldn't have helped either.

It's still not clear if this a one-off iTunes deal or if future Derpy appearances will feature the new voice (assuming they don't drop her speaking parts entirely), but I hope the producers aren't so put off by all this that they are discouraged from giving Derpy more cameos in the future.

That would be a sad and ironic conclusion to the Derpy story. :-(

    48. @Crusty
You say this changes nothing... And I am bound to agree... And disagree at the same time.

Hasbro are aware of what's going on. We are a HUGE community, filled with amazingly talented and kind-hearted people. When we speak, we are heard. Just as a small reminder again -- "Equestria Girls". "There's a Pony for that". The "Mare-a-Thon" itself.

The people that work at Hasbro are people, too. They have the internets, and they browse the internets. They are not blind robots, y'know! Neither a single person, sitting on his/her throne and drinking gatorade. I'm pretty sure that most of them are just as heartbroken as we are. (in a way, of course.)

But what happened cannot be denied. It's like throwing a perfectly good melon at a pristine, white wall. Everyone had the slice of the melon, and everyone enjoyed it... But now you tossed it at the wall. And now there is no melon anymore, even though it's all over the wall.

You can still lick the wall and taste it. But it's not the same anymore, is it?

    50. It's amazing to me that there are people who will, or already have, hate on a character this much. Or, for that matter, hate on the show's creators when they decide to change something.

I know how those people feel; I hate the way Derpy was betrayed in either version. Before, the voice was overexaggerated, and now, it's too scaled back. At this point, I'm just glad they didn't axe her completely.

Then again... THIS IS A CARTOON! Come on, people! If you want to try and change this, go work for TopDraw/Hasbro/StudioB. Sign up for the initiative. Don't get all worked up about how offended/displeased you are.

    51. If I had purchased this off iTunes after the change, I would be demanding a refund.

It's not what was shown on TV.

iTunes needs to put a disclaimer up stating that "This episode has been altered from its original version".

In addition, it's a bad dub. The voices are all off and it's distracting.

      ReplyDelete
    52. Wat. I go to sleep, wake up, and the sky has supposedly fallen?

      @Jason New Era
Pretty much this, and what Kreoss wrote.

Retconning should always always always be avoided, but this doesn't magically delete hundreds of pics or fan animations of Derpy. Besides, there are probably as many versions of her personality as there are fans, since everypony sees her slightly differently.

This thing was an overreaction for both Hasbro and us, but Bronies are as fallible as other people, and sometimes we fall back to the pre-FiM behavior. I would treat this ailment with more FiM. And if the original still exists on the Friendship Express DVD, I am happier for preordering it when I did. Maybe the old version can become a special feature on later releases.

So keep calm and let the studio people breathe. Once things settle, they can show Her Glorious (Im)Perfection to us again. Derpy isn't going to the moon. Unless somepony tells her it's a giant muffin.

      All hail the muffin queen!

    53. @richfiles>>>>>Before you respond to this, if you wish to that is, I politely request that you read the entire thing and think of a well thought out, respectful response. I'm showing you respect, and you should do me the same, it's common courtesy.<<<<<

I also do apologize if my earlier posts came off as rude, that was never my intention.

I honestly thing you're overreacting. The only thing that changed was the episode uploaded to iTunes. Are you saying that there is absolutely no way for you to ever watch the original again? Why should it matter if two versions exist? Can I also assume that things like censored versions of songs that you enjoy would get you this angry too? Because it's the same thing. The uncensored version will still be there, just as the censored version will as well. This is the internet, and once something has been uploaded, it will be here forever.

Look, I can see why this would get you upset, I can't deny that it did upset me a little bit at first too. But you have to realize that it's really not a big deal. Like I said before, both versions will always be there. Lets say that none of this ever happened and nobody got offended by the episode. What would have happened? Would Derpy have had any other speaking lines? No, this was a one time thing that would likely never occur again. Would she still remain in the background? Yes, of course they wouldn't remove her, she's part of the reason why many people enjoy the show. And that's exactly as it's going to be now, even after all of what happened. She won't appear with speaking lines, but will remain a character in the background along with her 'derp' eyes.

And by all means, voice your opinion. I'm all for hearing what others have to say about an issue. But you should at least wait until you're calm enough to be in a state of mind where you can think logically and aren't going to just throw useless hate around that makes everybody who likes the show look bad. Just give yourself a bit of time to relax and think about what you want to say, then send a mature, polite, and well written message to Hasbro voicing your distaste with the changes they've made. If you go around saying things like what you've been saying here you're only going to make us all look like a bunch of idiots who can't deal with problems like mature adults who should have the ability to so.

      ReplyDelete
    54. What's worse, both of my children love Derpy and call out her name whenever she is on screen.

I've had to try to explain the change to them, but all they could ask is "Why do people hate Derpy?"

      That's kids for you.

I think Hasbro and a large portion of the community has forgotten that children DO watch this show. Mine are both confused and upset that their favorite pony has been changed.

Sometimes, adults need to get over themselves and remember what's best for the kids. A child would never consider the word "Derpy" offensive anyway.

      Just, stop.
      Please.

You forget your motto and your reputation as some of the most civil fanbases on the internet, so please just stop.
I swear, in all my years on the internet, I've never seen anything so beautiful like this show and the community backing it. It's the result of perfect conditions that rarely occur anytime else, and I'm really going to be pained if the souring of the fanbase's attitude is responsible for the show's demise.

Come on, my fellow bronies, love and tolerate. Derpy's still in the show whether she talks differently or has non-crooked eyes. Besides, it's not as if the entire show would collapse if they removed her.

Remember the mantra from that science-fiction movie show: "It's just a show, I should really just relax."

    56. I hardly ever post comments on EqD, so let it be known that I've put some thought into this. Take some time to read this, hopefully it makes sense.

To be frank, the reaction to the ex-post-facto edits made to the episode has shown me a rather ugly, darker side of this fandom that I had hoped I would never see rear its head. Reading the slew of comments that have come in as the situation developed almost reminded me of the days when I would frequently browse 4chan's /b/, and willingly aligned myself with the self-named "internet hate machine"...and that's not a good thing.

I've tried to rationalize the vicious, almost palpable levels of hate I've seen in these past few hours, and I've come to several (not conclusive, mind you) conclusions; the largest and most frightening of which seems to be that a large portion of us don't seem to be embracing the morals of the show that we all claim to hold very near and dear to our hearts - that is, to Love and Tolerate. Hasbro, Studio B, Apple...whomever the culprit(s) may be in the change, at least try to think of it from a strictly legal perspective. You don't get to be a multi-million dollar corporation without knowing how to cover your own ass, so to speak, and what's done is done; at the first whisper of any legal fallout, the change would have had to have been more or less compulsory at that point. Whether it was trolls or legitimately concerned viewers (the latter of which is somewhat absurd, in my opinion, given the context), ultimately, the concern was legitimate enough to mandate the edits, and thus they were made.

Several people in previous comments have put out a very good point, and it bears repeating; what Hasbro, Studio B and all the great minds behind the show did was, very simply, give us a gift. That gift was to canonize a fan-made creation, a special shout-out to us bronies in the form of our adorably ditsy Muffin Queen: regardless of the fact that there were edits made, it still doesn't change that fact. They stuck their neck out for us, knowing full well what sort of blowback might be in the works for doing so. It would do us well to remember that in an attempt to mitigate and perhaps quell some of the rather vicious outrage that I've seen.

At the end of the day, we all love ponies. We hang around sites like EqD and Ponychan to interact with like-minded individuals, and we (allegedly) embrace the morals of the show. It would do us all well to remember that, more than likely, none of us have ever produced a television show before, and we are thus unaware of the intricacies and subtle nuances of making a kid-friendly program in an increasingly reactionary, politically correct culture.

tl;dr - What's done is done. Derpy is still our Derpy, no matter how many edits are made after the fact. Take a deep breath, count to ten, and just chill! No sense in getting all worked up about it. Ain't good for the health.

      ReplyDelete
    57. Hopefully this should calm the tide down a tad. Though a few people will still be pissed about this, just hope they remember to take a step back and don't start attacking anything and everything.

    58. Thing is... it's too late. The relevant clips are on youtube, and so on. Should Hasbro try to get those taken down -- they will officially have Provoked The Internet and that is a fight that nobody can win.

So my advice is, whatever happens with Derpy in the future, don't try to change history. It didn't go well for Stalin and he had nukes, I can't imagine it going well for Hasbro...

This has a serious chance of becoming the "Han Shot First" of cartoons and they will never live t down.

      ReplyDelete
    59. I think I'm casual Brony - I like the show, but sometimes I don't understand the community. "Derpy case" is one of those times.

If there really were people offended by Derpy's portrayal then Hasbro has a right to edit the episode. The edited version is fine - some fans even say that Derpy's voice sounds better. And the derp in her eyes has been mostly preserved.

So I REAAAALLY don't get people being upset by this. It's like their child nas been hurt :) It's childish to be honest.

MLP:FiM belongs to Hasbro. It's their show and their vision they produce. If they are willing to include some fan service, it's not because they have to, but because they are awesome. On the other hand, we can criticize episodes, but we don't have the right to be disrespectful to the creators.

    62. I'm undecided on the new voice, I think I like it more from a strictly character-acted point of view and how her voice sits in the sound field of the world around her (I tend to listen to things like this) -- the best way to describe this would be I guess as if an animator had drawn her outline with a thicker pen.

If it's important to us then we need to speak up, but ultimately respect the decisions of the Studio and Animators on this one even if its not what we want to hear. I love "our" Derpy however she is represented in and out of fandom.

    63. What a great idea. Sure send out a few metric shit tons of hate emails to Hasbro. Make certain to toss in a good number of threats too. Corporations just love that, especially with a product line they can just put on the shelf for a year or so and reboot later. We bronies have really endeared ourselves to them lately too with shitstorms an refusals of cease and desist orders. But hey, Pony is big, right? Like the toys take up about a tenth of an aisle space at the store. So what if the Star Wars toys and Transformers get whole aisles?

So it looks something like this. "Pull the plug. We're making plenty of profit with our other products right now. We'll run out the rest of the episodes for the season on the HUB. The thirteen we ordered can go to DVD. Get the art department to work on designs for G5. Suspend new development on G4. Tool down and close out the line. Get legal to work on copyright infringement, cease and desist. We want everything out there from G4 gone before we launch G5. Make sure we more closely target the demographic this time so we won't ever have to go through this again."

Think that can't happen? Think again. Hasbro has been more than generous and we've pissed on them. They could easily take a page from the Disney Playbook and shut everything off everything down, and lock it so you get it from them or you don't get it at all. I've seen it done because I happen to work for that biggest baddest Mouse in the world.

So spread the hate and anger. You can even be like that one moron who gave the date he was going to bomb Hasbro. Go wild! But if and when MLP:FiM is killed because of it, the pony blood will be on your blades.

The animator did give us a fact, yes.

"I didn't like the reason why they had her change. It didn't seem at all offensive in my opinion."

But, what was the reason exactly? All that was said that something was apparently offensive, nothing was expanded upon as to the cause of said change. The sudden coverup that happened is kind of staggering.

I accept your apology for lashing out as you are as frustrated as everyone else is.

      ReplyDelete
    69. While threats, slurs and hatred are absolutely beyond the pale, there is plenty of cause to be justifiably angry.

Love and Tolerance means you love the people you can, and tolerant the people you can't.

It does not mean you can't get very, very angry at something. I can't emphasize this enough.

      ReplyDelete
    70. This wasn't what I hoped to wake up too.

      ReplyDelete
    71. Ok, first off, I will say this. People who are telling other people to love and tolerate this is basically saying to love and tolerate this is saying:

"Screw you, who cares if you think Derpy is special, just STFU and do nothing."

You may not think you are saying that, but you are.

2nd: I have seen few people over act in this post. Overacting is:

"I'm going to kill hasbro," "Hasbro should go **** themselves."

      Overacting is not:

"Why did they have to get rid of Derpy?" "I hate how they got rid of Derpy" "I hate how they change Derpy."

Just because Derpy isn't important to you, does not mean your opinion matters more then anyone else.

You also don't realize that some of the bronies need to be angry for a bit...And telling them calm down just makes matters worse.

Also this guy has done nothing but say Derpy's eyes will be derped for the other episodes. He then follow with a love and tolerate which here means:

"Just stop caring and let the special moment die and do nothing about it."

Love and tolerate isn't a good thing to use in this predicament. Like I said that means "Screw you" in this.

IT only works on trolls. Get it right bronies.

And for those who are saying love and tolerate because its the shows message...Name one time they solved their problem by loving and tolerating.

    75. Thank you for the relieving message. We have been acting out of character over this situation for sure. The loss of an icon we helped create had clouded our vision of what we truly stand for. You have removed those clouds. While I am deeply disappointed that Derpy had to be changed I can at least know that the animation team is still with us on it. Perhaps one day when the rest of the world learns to Love and Tolerate like we have, then maybe, just maybe, Derpy Hooves the Messiah of Muffins and Mail shall usher in her return and lead us to a land of eternal muffins and smiles.

Hope. That is what drives anything. If we keep up Hope then one day she will return in all her Derpy glory.

Love and Tolerate my friends. Hate will only make this situation worse than it is.

      ReplyDelete
    76. "On the issue on Derpy whether she'll have the same Derp face expression and stuff. As an animator of the show, rest assured, she'll be fine."

Yeah, I'll bet that's what you thought when the scene was initially animated.

You're an individual contributor working for a subcontractor. I respect your work, but really, you're not the decision-maker. If a stuffed shirt with a title decides to order a change (AGAIN), then that's what will happen, including on whatever other not-Derpy-anymore footage you've already worked on. We have irrefutable proof that regardless of whether an episode has aired or not, its integrity lasts only as long as the suits allow it to be, and we also have irrefutable proof that they will meddle at their whim.

    78. I wonder how far it will go.

Rainbow is CLEARLY a stereotypical lesbian and could be found offensive, she should be edited.

Also, Flutttershy's meek nature and submissiveness is a stereotypical female trait. This could serve to encourage chauvinistic thinking in children, it should be changed.

Applejack's accent is a clear slur at people from Texas, she should be given a new voice.

      :/

I find it highly ironic that barely two episodes later, we get an ACTUAL mentally ill character (The barking patient pony), and not a single fuck was given by these so-called champions of the handicapped. Two-faced slime.

      ReplyDelete
    79. This will cause an explosion of anger if they decide to release the editted version on the hopeful season boxsets. Not from me, personally, but it will stil be so....unfair to poor Derpy <:(

    80. Wow. I lost myself for a good while until I have read that message. Even if it's too long you should read it, he is very right.
Usually I am very tolerant and very respectful towards others, but today I just got really mad and I have let the rage bulding inside me just go out. I will do waht he says and just keep enjoying the show, which will still be good and awesome no matter waht happens. I'm going to be positive and think that a lot of good moments and episodes will still come as they always have been coming ^_^

      ReplyDelete
    81. So basically, shut up, it's done, don't complain? I'm sorry, but this changes nothing. It's still censorship, you still axed a fan-favorite for no good reason. Sure, we preach love and tolerance, but as far as I know the show does too. But what does this tell everyone? Somepony that could be interpreted as 'mentally challenged' is not OK? Way to not listen to your own lesson there. I'm not okay with this at all.

    82. Fuck not pointing fingers, I'm sick of "You should be happy with what you have" when "what you have" is dictated by the small but vocal minority.

    83. Thanks Seth, I feel we really needed to be reminded that our ideology is love and tolerate. That's why we're the best internet community, our maturity towards people acting immature.

    84. So, he is basically saying this.

"Yeah, we caved in to a small group of extremists who didn't have their facts straight and more or less destroyed any semblance of an idea that we care about you or the fandom, since, you know, the 30,000 odd people who spoke to us telling us not to do this, and explaining calmly and rationally why not, were more or less completely ignored.

In fact, all we've really done is further the pro-PC cause that effectively sweeps all handicapped issues under the rug, and is actually entirely counter-productive.

So, the fandom is basically going to rip itself apart now.

But don't get mad and point fingers at us, guys! Love and tolerate! :3"

Typically, if someone kicks me in the balls, I don't just stand there smiling and ask him how his day was.

I don't plan to do the same here.

      ReplyDelete
    85. A lot of folks have been saying that "we need to know exactly what happened", and "this is a truly terrible thing". In the words of Big Macintosh, "nnnnope". This isn't as big a deal as you guys are making out, but here I will explain exactly what happened.

They decided to edit the episode for whatever reason. Perhaps they were just getting too much grief about it, you all know what the Internet is like. The main complaints were: Derpy is portrayed as a retard, the voice sounds too boyish, and making the name "Derpy" canon shoots down "Ditzy Doo". Too many emails clearly elicited a response.

The v2 of this episode fixed all of these by re-voicing Derpy to sound less male (I actually like both versions of the voice), un-derping the eyes (that was originally a subtle animation error and future appearances were all subtle easter eggs until here) and removing the name.

What more is there to explain? Nobody will ever name names, say who made the executive decision - I can guarantee that 100%. Because the Internet is an awful, horrible cesspit of hatred and complete buckwads hiding under anonymity, and that person would get nothing but grief from that point on if the Internet ever found out.

My own opinion on the changes: I like both versions of the voice. I don't like that the name was removed - that was an awesome shout-out to the fans and it's a shame that they felt they had to remove it. I'm neutral on the derpy eyes for this particular scene, since that's more an easter egg than anything and could be distracting in an obvious scene (similar to in Hearth's Warming Eve). Because of the name drop alone, I will be keeping the original version of the episode in my archives, because I know that part will make me smile every time I watch it.

      ReplyDelete

    90. I see that a lot people are being very harsh on the people who have been so upset by this. I guess I can understand that. But for me...it is simply unacceptable, for many reasons, and I'm not just going to sit here and pretend it didn't happen.

Let me tell you a little story.

My sister died at the age of 23 on the day before New Years Eve. Her entire life, she had suffered from extremely crippling physical and mental difficulties. She could not move any part of her body properly. She could not speak, she was partially blind, and had virtually no immune system. She lived 23 years of pure torture.

To add to that, my parents have had to fight several legal cases for her basic human rights multiple times. Why? Because most people just didn't want to know. Didn't want anything to do with it. People passing in the street would pointedly look away, like she should be hidden from the eyes of the normal people. Anypony talking to her always spoke in slow, baby voices, like she was some kind of lesser lifeform that couldn't understand them.

When I became a brony, it helped me out of a massive depression. Soon, I got my sister to watch it. She couldn't say anything, but I knew that she loved it too. For a year and a bit, things were so much brighter. When I found out about Derpy, I told my sister all about her. I loved how what was essentially a handicapped individual was being so accepted and loved worldwide. To me and my sister, it was a symbol, a sign that maybe things could change- that maybe one day the handicapped could appear in public or in the media without hastily being covered up and shoved aside.

Through her support group, I knew a lot of other disabled people as well. If there is one they HATE more than anything else, it is other people deciding for them what is offensive and what is not- they are never given a chance to voice their own opinions.

My sister passed away on the 30th of December, 2011. It was the worst day of my life.

When 'The Last Roundup' aired, it made me smile so much. I knew that if my sister was there to watch it with me, she would too. It was beautiful.

Then, this disaster happened. Everything this show had achieved for us had been single handily destroyed by a bunch of over-sensitive assholes who have no goddamn clue what real suffering is, the same people who claim they defend the handicapped but in reality are just sweeping them further under society's rug. It is people like these who are so busy censoring perfectly innocent cartoons while human rights cases for the handicapped are being lost across the world due to a lack of people fighting them.

So don't you fucking DARE tell me that this was the right thing to do and that I should sit back and let it happen, or that I have no right to be angry or complain.

"this clarification needs to be made: Hasbro did not /want/ to change the derpy scene. apple refused to put it in the itunes store without an edited version. the edited version will /only/ be in the itunes store/ any future dvds that hasbro may release, and the friendship express dvd still has the original scene. this will /not/ change. do not be upset at hasbro. they are on our side."

Where does this information come from? It seems like supposition to me.

Oh, I'm certain that the people who actually *make* the show, including kreoss, had nothing to do with the decision to make this change. That's a given.

It's also *plausible*, what you say, that this is all about iTunes, and future dvd/bluray releases, and tv repeats, will be intact; but show me how we know that's the case, rather than just making a supposition.

The existing Friendship Express DVD will have been left alone because of the expense in trashing a production run. Alternatively, *review* copies went out, including to EqD, with it intact, but let's see what ends up in the shops. It's no indicator of future behaviour.

    92. @Unsuspecting Herd It was a 'low level animator who has no say' who put her in the show in the first place.

    93. Sigh, that's a very nice message. The people who talk to us about things from the show are awesome.

I would love to know what exactly caused this change though, I find it annoying to accept in all honesty but i'll make do, it's just not nice to have it taken once given.

I am glad she will stay an easter egg for us, she's had her moment of glory in show and we produce alot of brilliant content around her out of it, I just can't help but feel perhaps if things had gone differently this wouldn't have happened.

Time to go listen to a few of the more cheery songs.

      ReplyDelete
    94. After taking a night to think about it, he's right. I'm not happy with the change but hopefully we won't have that much more to worry about. Derpy is there because of us, and she is gonna stay there because of us. We need to be chill right now and NOT flip out at Hasbro. We can express our distaste, that's fine, but for sure don't get angry. That won't help us at all here, people.

Oh I've thought since this originally brought up there should be a page made where the reasons for banning EVERY EPISODE could be collated. Not because we actually want to, but to illustrate the stupidity.

I mean, I'm frankly astonished Over A Barrel is still up; and my god, the pilot, you made the villain literally BLACK?

      And so on. :-D

    96. Well I'm glad to see rioting hasn't occurred, now only a few people are raging, which is a good sign, also the new Fluttershy synopsis episode makes me happy.

    97. I read the first 200 comments on the 'Derpy's voice is changed' article and most of it was people screaming WAHHH HASBRO YOU RUINED DERPY HER OLD VOICE WAS BETTERU. I agree with this animator and the other people who said the same thing. Hasbro (or studio B) included Derpy for the bronies. They care about us. They changed it to played it safe or something. Anyway, the original is still on the Friendship Express DVD and on the internet. You can still watch the original.

And it's also sad how people are sending death threats and blaming and saying rude things to Yamino just for exprssing an opnion. I think that is worse than thinking Derpy is an offensive character.

      ReplyDelete
    98. It would've been so much easier for everyone involved if there had been a warning.

But everyone from Hasbro just played cool and the little info that we got was "all is good, nothing will be changed". If they'd just have said "We can't keep the episode like this" I wouldn't even care as I understand fully that business comes before fan service.

It's the lack of information and even missinformation that was the reason for most of the outrage.

      ReplyDelete
    99. Ok, having finally looked at it. It's not so bad. I like this voice better. The fixing of the eyes was unnecessary, though. As for the name, well, even after the episode originally aired, I saw several fanfics interpret Derpy as a nickname, leaving her name as Ditzy Do. Personally, I kinda like that idea.

Then as I was thinking on Derpy/Ditzy this morning, I had an epiphany. Try to follow this. Pegasi control weather, right? Now look at her cutie mark. What weather phenomena looks like bubbles?

What if it's not Ditzy DO, but Ditzy DEW? The bubbles are dewdrops. It all makes perfect sense.

... she should still be wall-eyed, though.

    100. Yep, seeing as how I wasn't one of the frothing at the mouth mad dog types over this whole mess this news don't do much for me.

Still a bit disappointed in it all, but I tend to go back the classics to help get over it and put stuff in perspective.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIiUqfxFttM

She's ours, she was ours before they put her in the show as a cameo or shout out and she was ours when they gave her a name and had her talk.

This fandom took a animation error and turned it into a persona and a mascot complete with life-story and cute daughter (two even)that time travels in a blue police box and she'll stay ours for as long as there is a MLP FIM fandom.

To hell with the suites and the PC stick in the mud's (Yeah Yammnio, she's got a right to her thoughts but when you jump on board a petition to trample other folks thoughts you better expect some flak) Derpy Hooves ain't going no where even if she ain't ever seen again in the show, folks will STILL write fan fiction about her and STILL draw beautiful/trippy/fucked up/sappy art with her in it.

So I guess I'm saying, be mad, say what you gotta say and do what ya gotta do, but don't go threatening folks or acting the fool to do it, you only make the jerks who started this in the first place feel like they've proven their point and won.

    101. I think we should be voicing our concerns out loudly but, at the same time, in the most civilized way possible. The problem so far is that we have been bombarding people who cannot do anything about Derpy with information on her.
What I think we should do is to aim higher, much higher in the Hasbro's chain of command. An ordinary John Doe cannot do anything, but a CEO sure can :).
Now the sad truth - I have been trying to find the contact details for the persons with real power with Hasbro but this has proven to be unsuccessful :(. The only data I managed to find was the contact number for the Senior Vice President for the Hub, Mark J. Kern. For the record, I obtained this info by using http://www.google.com/search?q="Mark+J.+Kern%E2%80%A8+"+email

Fun fact: 'Ditsy' means someone who is scatterbrained or stupid. E.g., "She is such a typical ditsy blonde"

'Derpy' refers to a silly expression, often with the eyes in an odd position.

Conclusion: The name 'Ditsy' is more offensive than the name 'Derpy'.

      ReplyDelete
    104. I agree with this animator and what other people said, Hasbro (or Studio B) put Derpy in for us. They care about us. But there are really PC people watching this so they have to make both sides happy. At least Derpy still makes appreances in the show and at least Derpy was said on screen. The original version is still on the Friendship Express DVD and on the internet. You can still watch that if you prefer that version.

It's sad how alot of people blame, send death threats and said nasty stuff to Yamino for an opinion. Saying nasty things to people you disagree with. This isn't what ponies are about. I think Yamino and other people who disliked Derpy's portrayal are alot sane and nicer to than the many people on the 'Depry's voice has changed' post going YOU SUCK HASBRO YOU RUINED DERPY GO **** YOURSELF YAMINO I LEIK TEH OLD VERSHUN BETTERU. Yamino and others never said anything that nasty about Derpy or Hasbro.

    106. I honestly don't think whoever is in charge of Hasbro has a brain. Not only was this terribly insulting, its a terrible business plan.

They had two options: Appease a couple of hundred pro-PC soccer moms, or go with common sense and ignore them in favour of the nearly a million fans, who both have common sense, and money they are willing to spend on pony merch.

What they should have done: Ignore them, and keep the scene the same. The fandom, and the show, carries on as before. Nothing much else happens. Occasionally they might get an angry letter or two.

What they actually did: Alienate and piss off an extremely large portion of their fanbase, and therefore, their customers, for no logical reason. Sales of pony related products will likely drop dramatically, as will the shows ratings and numbers. Instead of one or two angry letters, they get several million. The fandom slowly tears itself apart, and a chunk of their profits go down the toilet with it.

Nice work, faceless Hasbro executive. Nice fucking work.

    107. Well then who did? Who was such a pathetic little crybaby curled up in the corner, they had to ruin a gift from the studio to us?

      ReplyDelete
    108. It's not just Derpy's eyes that made her endearing. It was the voice and the mannerisms. And now she's just a bland inoffensive pony with a bland inoffensive voice. And zip personality. And now EVERYBODY'S happy.

      Not.

      ReplyDelete
    109. there is a difference between "Love and Tolerate" an "Shut Up and Sit Down"

just sitting back and taking this is the latter, NOT the former.

"Love and Tolerance" would be all of us, together, uniting to tell Hasbro POLITELY (and that must be stressed) that we accept that this is their decision to make, but also that we do not like this change, and that they as a corporation have lost our goodwill by making it.

      ReplyDelete
    110. I am glad for this, glad for the message. I heard the new voice today and saw the "new pony," and had to think "This sounds... Rushed, raw and unfinished." Which, honestly it could have been. They needed a quick-fix, a patch per-say, to make the character a little less "Offensive."

Honestly, with a little more work (if there will be another speaking line for our favorite derped pony), I'm sure the new, more feminine voice, could definitely work.

Honestly, the new Petition doesn't even address the biggest concern I have. I don't honestly mind for the voice change (as it could still work), and I really don't mind if they un-derp the eyes a little... But as with most Bronies, as long as I get the name back, I'll be happy.

See, it's not the voice of the character that counts. Take EVERY scene out where Derpy talked, and you still get the Derpy we were kind of expecting... What really, TRULY made the scene was Rainbow Dash, not Derpy. It was when RD said "Now, CAREFULL Derpy!" THAT was the shout-out to us, and having THAT taken away is what I honestly think really hurts most of us.

It's not an issue with her voice, but that a blatant shout-out to Bronies was edited away into oblivion.

Still, though, I still love out little mail-mare, and I'll not only tolerate, but except this new version, as Mr. Kreoss is right. Even WITHOUT her, even if she were NEVER to have made it in the first episode, the show would be amazing, and I'd still probably watch it.

Am I upset? *Shrugs* yea, I'm a little disappointed. But I'll deal, and I'll live, and every Saturday, I'll stay up until 1pm, and watch the new episode, for as long as it airs. Love, tolerate, live, and move on. What's done is done.

      Also, inb4:"too long, didn't read" XD :P.

      ReplyDelete
    112. I was never going to stop watching the show just because of this. I wasn't expecting more than Derpy. Hell, Derpy alone is much more than the majority of cartoon will ever be able to boast of.

What I did lose, however, was my will to support Hasbro. It's an issue with my principles.

And again, Derpy is only offensive if you make it offensive. It's the same way that the word "gay" is only offensive when you make it so. So we'll just have to censor homosexual people as well? Some people might be "offended".

      ReplyDelete
    113. Also, the fact that some people actually blamed Yamino and other anti-Derpy people for this?

Please, don't give them the attention. They haven't done anything to earn it.

      ReplyDelete
    114. The way I see it is there's two versions of the episode out now. I don't think anything will be resolved until we see what direction the Derpy character will take in future episodes. So no point in getting all worked up until then.

I would be upset if this whole debacle lead to Derpy not getting screen time when she should have if this debacle didn't happen. I think we can all agree we don't want that to happen, so it may be best to stay cool until we see what happens with Derpy in future episodes.

Personally I think the best solution is a compromise between the differences of the two versions of Derpy. For her to fluctuate between the two....kind of like when one of the mane six go from their normal moods to their extremes. I think that could satisfy both sides.

      ReplyDelete
    115. "

I'm sorry for your loss, but this, so much this.

The fact that you are censoring her because she is perceived as mentally challenged by some people, is pretty much saying "she's different, quick, let's remove her to appease the people that do not like different people!".

      What's next, Zecora?

    117. From the start, as soon as I saw that clip in the episode, I knew stuff like this would happen.
roughly halfway down the page I said:
      ----------------------------------
I hope they do more with Derpy. The way I see it, they could go two directions with her character, just as the fanon has: lovable oaf, or misunderstood genius with terrible hoof-eye coordination.

Given those choices I hope they go for genius. It's less predictable, puts more common stereotypes on the chopping-block, and makes Doctor Whooves + Derpy as time travelling companions all the more likely.

Besides, The 'lovable oaf' concept is nice, but it’s a tricky direction to go for a budding TV show. Worst case, it would trip over stereotypes like 'Blonde' and 'Mentally handicapped' instead of destroying them. Not sure if want.
      ---------------------------------------

Everyone involved in making the show had two options to eventually face: to literally change Derpy, or develop her character in a way that transcended the offending stereotypes. Sadly, the show took the destructive path instead of the constructive one, and it made them trip over stereotypes where they could have smote them.

They didn't have a problem until they thought they did. By not fleshing out what could have been a multifaceted character, the show has admitted a failure instead of molding it into a success.

I just don't know what went wrong...

      ReplyDelete
    118. I'm glad that someone from the show's production team came in and talk to us about this . That shows me just how fare this show has gotten between the relationship of the studio that makes this show possible and its fan base. ;)

I will not lie, I was anger by the change of the character, but after reading this, it makes me understand that even some poeople of the show understand us.

So in the end, I"m okay about this.

      ReplyDelete
    119. I'm hurt. Derpy doesn't make the show, but I did take her astounding appearance as a gift, I didn't expect anything more to come out of it because it was just a recognition of the community. I'll continue to watch the show regardless, but it's going to take a few smiles smiles smiles to perk me up again..

      ReplyDelete
    120. I'm really fine with the voice change though it didn't sound as technically good as the first. Sort of like they were less into it.

What really got to me was the name removal and the underped eyes. I hate censorship.

But I still love MLP and it's staff. I just wish this wasn't the way this had to go down.

      ReplyDelete
    121. I will say I like that she actually sounds like a mare now.

      ReplyDelete
    122. The petition is being blocked by Hasbro's servers.

      ReplyDelete
    123. I love Derpy. About the claims of dislike for her and being disabled, I can see how they could make such a connection, but I wasn't offended by it in any way. Even if she WAS mentally challenged, how does that make it BAD? In a show about love and tolerance, the parents don't want to see any remote depiction of a possibly challenged pony?

If you ask me, that's direct discrimination against individuals who DO have a disability - saying you don't want a character like that in a popular show.

      ReplyDelete
    124. Okay what the about the change to Rainbow Dash! Thats the one I cared about.

      ReplyDelete
    125. Derpy's change saddens me, but what shocks me is the censorship and likely motivation behind the change. Plus, I'm outraged on behalf of the MLP:FiM team, who created such a wonderful, funny, endearing character that has now been decimated.

This is frightening to me. That art can be so tampered with in the name of PC, and no sir, I will not accept that.

I'm an artist and writer myself. This event disgusts me. To me, there's a larger issue here than a little cross-eyed cartoon pony. There's this attitude that's prevailing in America right now. You can't offend anyone. You can't disagree with a certain political point of view. This new development is the latest fallout of that. And so I don't feel like shrugging and saying, "Oh well, Hasbro had to do it, whatever." As an American who believes devoutly in free speech and freedom of expression, I can't accept that. So I have written to Hasbro (respectfully) because I really don't want to just tolerate this change. Because there is a larger issue here. And I don't think people who are upset about it should just accept it either. They should let their voices be heard (although I certainly agree that those voices should be respectful and civil). JMHO.

    127. It's a good message and nice to have such quick feedback from the team.

And here's the thing, if I may presumptuously speak for everyone who is asking for general politeness: We're not asking you to not feel disappointed, hurt or angry about what happens to you. No one has that right. What we don't want is you letting that anger eat away and you and manifest in hatred.

Acting with patience and tolerance is not the same thing as compromising what you believe. It's the ability to act in a positive manner when that is threatened and consider how your actions can best benefit you and those around you.

Anger is the true compromise. Derpy is a product of the love of our community and the hate of a few is what has injured her. How shallow and meaningless would it be if all we could do is spit that anger back?

      ReplyDelete

    134. @richfiles Well put! As important as it is to remember that the folks that have fostered this wonderful relationship with us, the creators of the show, still love us and love the show that they work so damn hard on each and every week, this is a time to get mad. It is a time to make noise, swiftly and clearly, and politely.

This hurts. It hurts because it's entirely without purpose, and without benefit to anyone. It hurts because Hasbro (and it is Hasbro, I think there can be no doubt now) has taken a beautiful gift from the creators of the show to the fans, and spit on it; and spit on us. We need to stay civil, yes. We need to stay calm; but we need to get mad. Even within "Love and Tolerance," there is a time for anger, pointed, smart, and directed anger... and I truly believe that this is that time.

      Not smart, Hasbro. Not nice.

      ReplyDelete
    135. FUCK love and tolerance. I don't want Derpy to be changed.

If people with "derpy" eyes are not offended by it, why would anyone else be?

Derpy is our mascot and she is perhaps the most universally loved pony despite (or perhaps thanks to) her derpy expression.

Removing her name feels like a slap in the face. What, is there no place for a pony who is a bit different from other ponies? Now THAT is offensive.

I don't know who is responsible, but fuck you anyway. I love Derpy just the way she was in the Last Roundup. I really hope that Kreoss is right and that Derpy will keep her expression. Too bad she won't keep her name :(.

      ReplyDelete
    136. Gotta say I'm still sort of disappointed for seeing this happen. It's basically Hasbro handing us a gift box and and taking it back as we're stretching our arms to accept it.

All in all, though, I'll stop caring about this in a couple hours. Eh. It just doesn't suit me to fuss over this sort of things.

      @helldiver450
      Fancy finding you here.

      ReplyDelete
    137. Judging by how the We Love Fine shirts disappeared and reappeared without a name, I'm guessing Hasbro doesn't want to use the name Derpy. I think that's why they took out the name in the edited episode. But, the only edit they should've made was to the name removal. It's ridiculous that they underped the eyes and even went as far as doing a new dub.

Look, Hasbro can only be faulted for having to keep its family friendly image. I get it. I found the character and name a little iffy to be showing for a TV-Y show. But I thought we got past that hump after the episode aired.

It's unfortunate that the gray pony with bubbles for cutie mark is nameless and that is the reality now.

      ReplyDelete
    138. At least she'll stay the same in future episodes... Thanks for the post seth.

      ReplyDelete
    139. There is some very deep and very strange irony to be found here, with people rageing against "outside forces" trying to control the contents of the show, while these same people recently were attempting to exert the same kind of control via angry letters, internet petitions and counter-petitions.

How about we ALL just back off a little now and let the creators, well... create?

If there is one lesson we can ALL take away form this entire mess, please let be that we have nothing to gain by reacting like an angry mob.
That kind of behavior is not proactive, it's not productive, and it does not bring us what we all want: moar ponies.

      ReplyDelete
    140. Fussing at hasbro is still stupid. They are the ones who ALLOWED Studio B to even AIR Derpy in the first place. They ALLOWED her to be on the DVD. If THEY themselves didn't like it, they would not have given Studio B the green light to let her go on through.

The reason she got edited is because people whined and tried to find something to be offended about in her character. Said people caused Hasbro a lot of grief and even maybe tried to evoke a lawsuit or some shit.

Being mad at Hasbro is STOOPING DOWN to the level of the people who wanted her removed in the first place. So stop acting like a bunch of self entitled spoiled brats.

Also of Hasbro hates us so much why did they allow WeLoveFine to keep the Derpy name? Why are there a whole bunch of toys to be released because of us? Why did they allow the original version of The Last Roundup to exist in the first place?

Even then, its a few seconds clip in a cartoon (and that doesn't even really change anything about the episodes plot). Honestly, stop acting like its the end of the fucking world.

      ReplyDelete
    141. To everyone thinking Kreoss has confirmed that Derpy will NOT be modified in the future, not true. Go and read the next to last paragraph again. He's basically saying that even if she does get modified and/or totally cut out of the show, it'll still be a great show. Which is true, but it's a slap in the face to the whole community to have her edited, because she was such an incredible, amazing gift, or tribute even, to the whole brony community from Studio B and Lauren Faust.

Keep those (polite) letters flowing to Hasbro guys. They've listened to fan opinions before, more than I would've ever expected, and I'm willing to bet they'll listen to them again.

"If you are upset with something, display it in a more positive way" THIS. SO true. :)

    142. "He also goes into detail about not pointing fingers and blaming people about this (Something you should all probably listen to!)"

    143. Bronies on EQD, PLEASE heed the advice of the animator who wrote this to us.

If we want Derpy to return to her former glory, uncensored status, we must politely voice our concerns to Hasbro. If we overflow them with POSITIVE opinions about why we love Derpy as she really is, they will surely overwhelm the small amount of haters who caused this to happen in the first place.

Hate just brings about more hate. Let's no go against what we have worked so hard to attain in internet popularity/respect over this past year and some months.

Hasbro WILL listen if we remain true to the Brony way. Love and tolerance everypony. ;)

    144. an, I cant believe people are still screaming bloody murder. We have to be tolerant of other's opinions, ok? Personally, as upset as I am about all that, and how I wish they didn't go as far as to change the episode... I think it's not so bad. if anyone was hurt by the portrayal of derpy, I bet they're pretty happy about it, and well, I can't really be too mad at that. We have to remember the target audience here. Even if I think they went a little too far about it with changing the eyes, they still probably didn't handle derpy's characterization the MOST sensitive way. I love her and I loved her old voice, but well, it's happened and not much we can do.

It's hard to please everyone. How do you think the guys at hasbro felt? They just did what they felt needed to be done to not have people be concerned, and it sucks that people are at their throats even MORE now.

      ReplyDelete
    145. Personally, I don't mind that they removed the name from the episode.
At least they didn't have Rainbow Dash call her by a different name altogether.
So as far as I see it, her name's still officially Derpy. It just isn't mentioned directly in the show anymore.

The only part of all this that really upsets me is the fact that they felt they had to change it because people were so butthurt by Derpy's characterization.

      ReplyDelete
    146. There's one thing I'm not getting here. Why is it that the message of those of us asking for civility is being interpreted as us sitting back, doing nothing, and accepting the edited scene? Because nothing could be further from the truth.

I've been pleading for civility all night, but that doesn't mean I'm not upset or not doing anything about it. Far from it. I am disappointed about the scene change. I want answers. I want some kind of explanation. I want to know why we got Derpy in the beginning and now we don't. I am not going to just quietly accept this.

But I'm not going to go about it in a rage filled manner. You can be firm with your views without being disrespectful. I know the minute I start raging or hurling insults, I lose any kind of respect and that's just going to hurt my argument.

So go ahead and demand answers, but do so respectfully.

      ReplyDelete
    147. Sadly, I don't trust Hasbro to have told us the truth about the DVD now; I'm canceling my pre-order until I see real confirmation that the episode is in tact there.

      ReplyDelete
    148. Even if I wasn't kicking or screaming from pure anger to begin with, I did feel put out by the change.
Still, this post did help me to relax a little. I still love Derpy and this unnecessary edit won't change that.

    151. So basically we have two sides.

The ones who care so much for Derpy and just want let out our frustrations. (My side)

And then there is the people who think we shouldn't have an opinion and should just shut up and love and tolerate. (Do nothing)

Honestly, you guys aren't seeing the big picture of what this means...

      ReplyDelete
    152. @CityFlyer502 Love and tolerate basically means do nothing and smile about it. No if ands or buts. The phrase was only meant for trolls, not this.

    153. When I first heard of the intial fiasco, I thought it was just the small minority, hoping that the studio would realize you can't please everyone. But after seeing the edit,I was so upset that I almost stopped being a brony. One can only hope that the future will look brighter in the end.

    154. @RaccoonBL At this point, I'm tired of repeating myself over and over. I know perfectly well where I stand on this. I am gonna be doing something, and I'm definitely not smiling about this. 157. What saddens me is that those with similae eye troubles or learning difficulties or disabilitiedeans syndromes leading to "clumsy" movement found inspiration in Derpy. Many of them posted saying they weren't insulted but happy about her presence. Uplifted.

MLP is still wonderful and no lesser because of this. The blame lies on us and our behavior.

Instead of 'loving', 'tolerating', or more importantly, 'accepting' these ponies, and then teaching our young fillies to do the same -- we should just fix these undesirable imperfections and hope that they will bring less attention to themselves.

      Your faithful student, Twilight Sparkle."

    160. @RaccoonBL There's no need for you to apologize. We've all got our own interpretations and views on things.

And on that note, and in all seriousness, what's the email everyone's using to get a hold of Hasbro? I've been touching up my letter to them, but I'm not sure where to send it.

      ReplyDelete
    161. I would like to explain the reason why people are hating on this guy.

The reason is, is that he may say that he loved Derpy. He tells at the end to love and tolerate. Like I've been saying, this means to do nothing.

      That is all.

      ReplyDelete
    162. We're still going to need a response from Hasbro and Apple. I also get the feeling that this "fix" was suppose to be put up before Hasbro said she wasn't going anywhere, and that iTunes is just slow. (See missing Heart and Hooves Day episode and other missing episodes)

      ReplyDelete
    163. Oh look, he told us to love and tolerate. Now no one can have a differing opinion.

Seriously, if this upsets you, let it upset you. There isn't anything wrong with that. You aren't any less of a brony for dislikin this. Love and tolerance doesn't mean you can't have a differing, or negative opinion on things. Obviously don't go send any death threats or stupid stuff like that, but it's okay to be upset about something.

In my opinion I think he's just trying to do damage control and use a tenant of the fandom against itself. And that's fine, a lot of people do need to calm down.

    165. I posted a comment to Kreoss in his journal, but I'll C&P it here.

      ———

I've said part of it elsewhere, so I'll say it here.

I may be one of the newcomers in the fandom, having being a fan only since last summer, and have only started to get involved in MLP fandom politics since December/January. But when I researched Derpy prior to "The Last Roundup," I see this adorable, loving klutz who means well yet has the tendency to make mistakes. She means well, but it doesn't go according to plan. The way the fandom shaped her up from this background pony into a wonderful character shows me how much with potential she has.

When "The Last Roundup" first made it on the air, I and the great majority of the passionate fanbase LOVED the scene Derpy was involved in. The animators and scriptwriters didn't have to include her in the scene, but they did as a token of appreciation towards the fandom. Unlike what some people have said, the brony/pegasister fandom is massive and passionate; the scene is a means of communication between the people behind the show and the fandom (particularly those who adore her). Derpy's original portrayal of the scene is beautifully done and implies that she has plenty to develop as a great secondary character instead of merely being a background character, and I really appreciate the hard work you, Sibsy, and so on here to include her, her name, personality, and care. To this day, I don't see how the original "Derpy" is offensive at all, even after all the links provided.

The re-dubbing of the scene really stung because in comparison to some that I've crossed, I *didn't* see this coming. Despite the controversy from last time, WeLoveFine (a major sponsor of Hasbro and the MLP:FIM series) continued to sell Derpy merchandise, one of her shirts being a top seller.

As for the re-dubbing itself, it came across as a major insult to myself for at least four reasons:

      1. The voice acting of "My Little Pony" has been known for featuring excellent voice acting and providing high standards as such. The voice acting for Derpy and Rainbow Dash in the re-dub are very, VERY poor by MLP:FIM standards. I've watched anime dubs from 4Kids Entertainment, and the re-dubbing is very comparable to 4Kids's anime dubbing in quality.

      2. The characters aren't right one bit. Derpy Hooves has a bubbly, cute, innocent, klutzy personality. Despite having a new female voice now, she sounds screechy, like a hyperactive sparrow. It doesn't sounds cute or klutzy anymore. Also, RD's reaction to getting hit by the lightning didn't fit, either. Her initial exasperation in the first scene fit her much better because she's impatient. RD's revised line sounds way too calm for her personality.

      3. The censorship of Derpy's name is another. With Derpy's name removed in the revised version, it gives that impression of censorship/political correctness. Stuff like this is one of the biggest problems in most cartoons today. MLP:FIM was a big change over this. DHX/Hasbro bowing down and eliminating her name entirely just makes her a generic character.

      4. The overall charm is missing. There was a bubbly, innocent, yet hilarious scene that was a huge shout-out to the brony fanbase. A HUGE majority of the fanbase praised the scene and LOVED her for this. The current scene lacks this charm because the original one made Derpy the wonderful, loving klutz she was. We LOVED her for her being the way she was. The new scene, like I said before, flattened her character and doesn't give her an identity.

      (cont.)

      ReplyDelete
    166. I've read it, and it did calm me down from the "soccer mom" fit that I had last night. Maybe the new voice wasn't too bad but then again the original one was just that "original". I'm not going to stop watching the show anytime soon just over a little scene change, I remember when Season 1 was completely restricted because of the E/I requirements and according to HubWorld.com, IT STILL IS! But even though S1 was E/I, Studio B STILL managed to put together an A+ show, and I am sure that they still will going into late Season 2 and even Season 3 as well. I just hope the people on this board didn't do anything stupid like spam Hasbro, The Hub or DHX with hate mail over just a 30 second scene in The Last Roundup, because that wouldn't be good. All I'm going to do is still enjoy MLP, still go on to Equestria Daily to enjoy the fanficion, fanart, and PMVs and just enjoy the series as it is before the whole Derpy controversy started.

      ReplyDelete
    167. (Part 2 of my journal comment to Kreoss.)

I'm currently not all that concerned about the crossed eyes, but they definitely added a ton to her klutzy, bubbly, accident-prone characterization. They helped make Derpy lovable and identifiable; they made Derpy, well, Derpy. The re-dubbing made it much more subtle, and I'm completely fine with that…but it's nonetheless not the same.

Even though the scene was just a few minutes long, it brought a lot of charm to "The Last Roundup" and really, really helped make the episode very endearing. While the rest of the episode is unchanged and still excellent, the extra piece of the puzzle is severely missing now because we saw the original first, and the poor care in the re-dubbing is an even bigger stinger. It's a shame, too, because I'm very sure the voice actor for Derpy in the re-dub is excellent.

Regarding the Yamino situation, I have no intention of visiting her page nor discussing with her or the people in her comments section. I made my stance towards her earlier this month, and as a result, I see no reason to revisit it.

Will the show be fine? Currently, I'm quite sure the show will go on just fine. Despite what happened here, it's an extremely great quality cartoon that brings the joy into our hearts. It's got that innocent, lovely atmosphere full of interesting, lovable characters. That won't change, and you and your crew have an unbelievable amount of talent, and you're just growing in your capabilities.

As for Derpy herself, will she be fine? I give you a ton of credit for attempting to bring the calm during this tempest here. And I appreciate your willingness to take your valuable time to make a stand on this whole thing. However, while *you* say she'll be fine and while part of me wants to believe she'll be fine…my heart is very unsure. The poorly done re-dub of Derpy and Hasbro's censorship of her name in it gave me really bad vibes surrounding the klutz. WeLoveFine may still be selling her name and product, but the censorship of her name in the "fixed" version and lazy care of the re-dubbing rubbed me the wrong way and, to me, is a major disrespect to all the hard work you, Sibsy, and the others put into. I'll never change my stance over the poor re-dub, but my feelings over Derpy's possible outcome in the future (including Season 3) will remain in limbo for now.

To conclude my comment, I want to thank you for taking your time to express your thoughts and feelings surrounding the "fixed" scene. You had guts putting this here, and you deserve so much credit for not only the hard work you put up on the show, but for your ability to attempt to reach out and comfort the fanbase. This time right now in the MLP:FIM fanbase is sensitive and tumultuous, and you deserve credit for your words of wisdom. With that, I humbly thank you.

    169. Why are people automatically assuming the people who are raging are evil and want to boycott the show?

      ReplyDelete
    170. This should be stickied to the top of EqD. I hadn't heard that an animator had clarified stuff until an IRL brony friend told me.
But yay, this is good news. Sounds like iTunes was concerned about the derp and Hasbro was not, so they just edited the iTunes version.
      Life goes on.

      ReplyDelete
    171. I think it's understandable that people are upset, and just dismissing that as some people are doing is pretty disrespectful to those who are justifiably upset.

That said, I'm all for people expressing that upset more maturely.

Well that's your choice but with the redub from iTunes, those original copies will sell out quicker than ever and I am sure when the originals sell out and the new copies are released, you will be stuck with the redub version. So I kinda had to take a gamble and pre-ordered the DVD and hope that the scene remained intact. Now if the release date is moved in any way, shape or form, THEN I will cancel it.

      ReplyDelete
    175. Whoops, misread the comment I was replying to.

Regarding the claims that it must've been trolls who complained about it, I do wonder if it's not just easier to assume it was trolling that got Derpy changed than to try to see someone else's point of view.

I'm unhappy with the changes and I think those who thought Derpy was offensive fundamentally misunderstood the character, but at the same time I can understand why people would come to that misunderstanding.

      ReplyDelete
    176. She'll be fine with her derped eyes...
What about her voice?! I want her original voice! I want Tabitha to voice her in the future!
      You know what? fuck this!

      ReplyDelete
    177. Fine, I can live with this resolution of the matter. Even if Derpy never gets any more speaking lines, she'll at least still visually be the same Derpy we know and love. That's plenty good enough for me.

      ReplyDelete
    178. I'm glad. I mean, the change was extremely unneccesary but I am in no place to say anything. On Yamino, I'm still filled with deep... anger with them. I followed them on tumblr before all this and I suddenly get filled with hate rants of Derpy on my dash. I do no blame her for this but some things Yamino said were out of line and not very "love and tolerable". Yamino isn't the only one but the only one I can say. It's hard to love and tolerate people who use their popularity to get their points across but I digress. I'm happy that she'll still be derpy in the background. And I'm glad to hear this information.

      ReplyDelete
    179. @Pegadonkey

      This x1000.

I quote for effect: "'Pull the plug. Make sure we more closely target the demographic this time so we won't ever have to go through this again.'

Think that can't happen? Think again. Hasbro has been more than generous and we've pissed on them. They could easily take a page from the Disney Playbook and shut everything off everything down, and lock it so you get it from them or you don't get it at all. I've seen it done because I happen to work for that biggest baddest Mouse in the world."

      ReplyDelete
    180. Man, I was thinking about this last night and actually lost some sleep about it. I really did want to say something about the Derpy thing and how the fandom seems to be abandoning it's creed, and was thinking I'd go for a video this morning on it, and what do I find?

One of the guys behind the show has beaten me to the punch.

So I'm just going to take a second to say that all in all still the FiM community is still one of my favorites-I love y'all to death- and just hope that you all take this to heart. We're an amazing group because we are a force of optimism, and I don't want to see that die down quick.

      ReplyDelete
    181. Ditzy Doo is one of my favorites and I'm glad she's getting more air time in the show, but the fact is that her original voice and portrayal was offensive. It totally made fun of kids with Down's Syndrome, and that is just mean. Many people with mental disabilities or their friends and family spoke up to say that the portrayal was offensive. I'm glad that Hasbro listened and changed Ditzy's voice. Ditzy is still going to appear in future episodes, but not in such an offensive way. If we're going to be the fandom of love and tolerance, then we have to love and respect our disadvantaged members when they speak up and say something is wrong.

      ReplyDelete
    182. I think the creators have handled this pretty well, and even though I strongly disagree with this kind of censorship, I can respect and understand their reasons for changing it.

MLP will still be an awesome show, and the un-edited version will forever be floating out there as a nod to the Bronies. Lets be happy with what we got and voice our disapproval in a civil manner.

      ReplyDelete
    183. Well, here's to hoping all that has been achieved so far between the companies involved and the fandom doesn't fall apart over this.

With that said, I am disappointed that no warning was given for this. A simple "this is what we're doing and why" would have averted much of the hate.

I am still upset. Yes, it was a slap in the face for a show about love and the tolerance and acceptance of differences.

I am not saying we should do nothing. I am just saying we need some tact with how we go about airing our grievances.

Come on everypony. PLEASE, PLEASE let us show everyone that the Bronies can "practice what they preach" as it were.

    185. @keleri The thing is, it was never about making fun of people. It was an acknowledgement that there are such people everywhere, and that their acceptance has a place in our society.

Derpy wasn't a situation of "haha look at that retard". Derpy was a show of accepting differences and a show of acknowledging that said differences aren't something to be shunted aside and ignored.

Hell, I have a mentally challenged cousin. And she has her problems and can be difficult to deal with sometimes. Doesn't mean she never deserves to be acknowledged in the media in a positive and/or non-pitying way.

Think of all the different racial groups that never had/had an overly stereotypical Super Hero in the early days. Same thing here, just a different aspect of society.

      ReplyDelete
    186. Yeah, "she'll be fine", my ass will be fine, I bet that if the ones I call "New Bronies" see that she's back being the Derpy we know and love, they'll keep coming up with shitstorms. I already lost hope in the Brony community, it's full of shitheads now, and this problem with Derpy proves that very fact! I also blame Apple for this, they're the ones who changed Derpy, in fact, WHY IN THE HOLY MOTHER OF FUCK DID HASBRO GO TO THE SHITFUCKS OF APPLE TO PUT THE EPISODES ON!? Everyone knows iTunes sucks, everyone knows everything Apple makes sucks, I seriously wish Steve Jobs made something called the iQuit before he died and closed Apple down to save us all from this bullshit!

    188. If you saw the first post and responded to it I'm sorry for posting it. I can see that it sounds hypocritical to tell people to voice your complaints calmly in a post with lots of shouting and cursing, but I still stand by my point.

A lot of people are miss-reading the note and thinking that it's telling them that they don't have the right to complain. That's not what it says at all. In the note there is a line. It says, "Remember tolerance is not the same as acceptance. If you are upset with something, display it in a more positive way."

You can give voice to your complaints, but do it maturely. Screaming like middle-schoolers is simply not productive

      ReplyDelete
    189. To be honest, he addresses the major issue here; how many shows do such a blatant shout out to its fans? Not many I'm sure.
It's nice enough that Derpy is a recurring character and the speaking role was just plain awesome (*insert 20% cooler joke here*). But although I'm sad that Derpy has been altered, at least the show makers tried to connect to the fan base more.

      ReplyDelete
    190. @NightStarX

You're ignoring the fact that it says in the message to keep calm and voice our opinions and concerns respectfully. The gist of the message was to calm down and be respectful, not shut up and don't fight the censorship! It says so in there quite a bit, really. It would require a lot of misinterpretation to get "don't fight it" out of this.

      ReplyDelete
    191. I can't believe the amount of bitching and moaning being leveled at Hasbro right after they released pictures of a brony-centric pack of toys including DJ-Pon3, a background character so obscure she has had less than a minute of screentime.

I hope this fandom doesn't end up being as bitchy, self-entitled, and ungrateful as the Transformers fandom, but the way things are shaping up . . .

      ReplyDelete
    192. I know I will catch a lot of flak for this, but I kinda like her new voice better (no offence to Tabitha St. Germain's amazing work, but I think it just fits a bit more).
That being said, the situation should never have escalated this far, but it's out of our hands now. The old Derpy will still be on youtube, anyway, so it's up to each of us to decide on personal head-canon.
The worst thing about this whole mess is that we most likely won't see another scene with a voiced Derpy. It's sad, but it could have been much worse, like never getting another Derpy scene.

      ReplyDelete
    193. He's right, of course. When something we don't like happens, that's when practicing love and tolerance are more important than ever. It's easy to do that when things are going perfectly, but when you're upset is when it really counts.

    196. Here's my two cents...
I don't mind the new voice (yes, its off because it had to be inserted). Personally, I believe the ep. was altered for legal reasons; that Derpy's voice (and I mean absolutely no disrespect to Tabitha) might have been inferred to present the character as "slow" or "mentally impaired" (I don't think so, but that's beside the point). Changing Derpy's eyes was probably an overreaction on Hasbro's part while they were backpedaling on this scene (again, I don't blame them for this; legal shit-storms can arise from insignificant issues/ minor details. The solace we can take from this is that future episodes won't alter Derpy's eyes, so we can at least rejoice that she still EXISTS !
