      Wrong.

The bill forces ISPs to block access to sites that are arbitrarily deemed to contain content that infringes on intellectual property rights.

    2. This is a very depressing day :/
Just think how depressing the internets will be if the bill passes :(

    5. SOPA was shelved indefinitely on Monday and the Obama administration has stated that they won't let it pass unless they make serious changes to it. This is literally the least effective time to be freaking out about it.

      ReplyDelete
    6. @Photoraccoon It's been far from depressing for me. Granted, I've been driving around the city up until about an hour ago, so being without internet for extended periods of time is pretty much the norm for me. But it's definitely weird coming back knowing that EqD won't be updating for a while.

    7. Let me be the first to congratulate Ghost on finally getting something right. It's truly inspiring to see all the different personalities of the internet, even those who usually hate each other's guts, unite towards a common goal. Restores your faith in humanity.

    9. Watch, there will be a flood of updates once the day is done. I doubt Seth is going to let himself get behind, look at Christmas. Can so see him prepping updates to throw up once the protest ends.

Regarding SOPA/PIPA, look up "The Great Firewall of China." There is an example of what these can do, but these would be much more global reaching due to the more widespread use of English, and the fact that many highly used sites are hosted in the US.

    13. This "Ghost" guy sounds like the kind of person I'd be more likely to get into a shouting match with — I consider myself on the left side of the political spectrum, when I can be bothered to pay attention – but I find myself in the surprising position of agreeing.

    17. Nnngh... Do I >want< to watch that video from Ghost? It says it's a rant on Conservatives as well... I know how often Conservatives are blamed for problems they as a whole have nothing to do with. I'm Conservative, I don't support this bill in the slightest.

Gah... I hope watching it doesn't ruin my day. :\

Sorry about the Royal Canterlot voice, I just really wish I could affect SOPA more than I have.

I don't know about any of you, but if either of these get passed, I'm gonna be in the trenches with Ghost (and many, many others), planning the downfall of the bastards who passed this.

Screw Obamacare, the BP Oil Spill and the War, this is is over 9000! times worse!

"Ok," you might say, "that's taking it a bit too far... after all, the BP Oil Spill harmed an thousands of miles of pristine ocean beauty! And the War, well, what's worse than people going out and killing each other? And Obamacare just isn't fair to anyone, except government officials..."

Yes, they are serious world issues, but so are SOPA/PIPA. Don't believe me?

      ReplyDelete
    20. Ok, here's some examples of what these bills can AND WILL do:

      Imagine no fanfics. ANYWHERE.
No Cupcakes, no Past Sins, No Fallout: Equestria.

All of those wonderful PMVs, from PONIES: THE ANTHOLOGY, to the incredible pony-fied game and movie trailers, to "Ponies What are British", to the animated fanfics, GONE.

Remember all that wonderful fanart that comes from Deviantart (and other places) to swamp Seth's inbox day and night?
      *DELETED*

All of the wonderful products of this creative community will have to either be stored in our harddrives (and that's gonna take TERRABYTES of memory!), or they will be lost forever, leaving only cherished memories in their shimmering wake.

      But that's not all.

Imagine the epic dance gif thread (and all other content) in Poniboru (and Ponychan) gone in the blink of an eye.

Think of all the wonderful pony personas and relationships, both canon and fan-made, vanishing in a cataclysmic cyber-blast.

You know all of those insane, incredible, awesome, beyond-heavenly fanmade soundtracks on Youtube?

      Yep, those will go too.

But if that's still not enough to convince you, imagine Ponychan, Poniboru, Deviantart, Reddit, 4chan, Youtube, Twitter, Wikipedia, Facebook, and thousands of other cultural digital hotspots either disappearing from the Internet or becoming too restricted for us to use!

And last, but certainly not least, this amazing site, which just recently celebrated 100,000,000 hits, hosts thousands of pages full of brony creativity and news, and which brings us all together into a wonderful community, even this site will fall by the hand of SOPA/PIPA.

All the content, all the creativity, all of the dedication from thousands of pony fans around the world; all the hours of hard work, time, and MONEY dedicated to it by the admins, mods, ALL OF IT WILL BE GONE!

      FOREVER!!!!

      That's what we're dealing with!!!

Steve Jobs, one of the greatest and most influential men of the 21st century, quoted Picasso in an interview one time, saying "Good artists copy, but great artists steal."

The point is: when we on the Internet recognize a great idea (i.e. MLP: FiM), we want to take that idea and use it in our own creations. We make changes and improve upon it. Thus our art, our fanfics, and our music is made.

SOPA and PIPA are meant to stop that. Whatever other bullshit the media and the lawmakers are trying to shove down your throat is merely a smokescreen to hide the truth.

If you think it is wrong for our community to make stories, videos, and art based on MLP: FiM, then by all means support SOPA/PIPA. They'll deal with this sort of thing very efficiently.

If, however, you value your fanart/fics/music, and anything else on the internet that's pony-related, then get off your butt and go to bat for the Internet and ponies!

This applies not only to bronies, but to anyone who has ever created/posted something on the web which pertains to copyrighted material AND to those who host such creations!

I'm looking VERY hard at you, Youtube and Facebook. Get your act together. If Wikipedia can do it, then so can you.

THIS IS SERIOUS!! GET MAD, PEOPLE!!!

inb4 I get banned for excessive blogging in an EqD thread... but if it helps bring these bills down, it's totally worth it!

Please continue to sit on your duff. I'm sure nothing's gonna happen.

After all, it's not like our freedom of speech is in peril or anything...

And besides, this is the great U.S.A! We will NEVER have tyrannical rulers who want to censor and restrict everything in our daily lives...

...no, that's not our style at all. We elect weak-kneed government officials who only worry about their next paycheck.

Then we let Hollywood and other big corporations control them from behind the scenes.

What's the worst that could happen?

It's not like they'll ever win...

    26. So now we've been reduced to party bashing. Lovely. Considering members of BOTH parties support and reject this bill I find this wholly in appropriate.

      ReplyDelete
    27. Dear Congress:

You have created a bill that has managed to get 4chan, wikipedia, google, pornhub, and reddit among hundreds of others -to all agree on the same thing-

You have come as damn close to uniting the internet as may be humanly possible. All in opposition to you.

Think about that for a minute.

Oh, and to the bronies on the fence: This bill would make "For the New Lunar Republic" illegal piracy.

      *waits for the mass rage*

    28. What happened to the color scheme?

      ReplyDelete
    29. @Brian

Sadly comes down to bashing on 'acceptable' targets and sites/mods that condone it so long as it doesn't touch *their* beliefs.

I know somepony already posted this link, but it's worth reposting.

Congress, you've obviously spent too much time with your head in your a$$ and not enough time on the Internet. It is a beast beyond your control.
I mean, 4chan is a terrifying enough force to deal with, but getting them, Reddit, AND the Brony community working together??? AGAINST you???!! WITH PORNHUB???!?!!!

      *slow clap*

      ...Prepare your anus.

    36. Noooo why do they have to do this WHY! TWILIGHT GET MY GUN!

      ReplyDelete
    37. @mycutiemarkisagun Yeah, everyone assumes this must have been a Republican-only bill. No no no! It was crafted by politicians from BOTH PARTIES! If anything, the only group united against it from the start was the Tea Party.. you remember, those supposedly racist, evil hate-mongering Nazis?

Well well well, look who's REALLY on the side of corporations, the party insiders from both sides! And who stood for the people's rights from the start? The ones the media, owned by the huge Hollywood conglomerates mind you, ridiculed.

The mud starting to fall from people's eyes a little yet?

So what if some of the Tea Party candidates are nuts! Better a crazy person of which you know exactly what they are than a clever, lying snake who'll smile to your face then bite you the instant your back is turned.

I'd rather have an honest nut than a cunning liar.

And in closing, vote for me in 2016! I promise Pony for all! :D *is an honest nut*

      ReplyDelete
    38. @Vipera Exactly! SOPA and PIPA could be abused by anyone who wants to shut down opposition. All they'd have to do is post a few copyrighted images to a board or forum of their enemies, then file a complaint and get the site shut down within a mere 5 days! It's not just censorship, it opens the door for full-scale sociopolitical oppression. Now I was never a supporter of Obama, but if this thing ever does creep through in some form we don't catch and he manages to veto it, it'll be the single best thing he's ever done for the country.

      ReplyDelete
    39. @Dr. Robotnik PIPA was still floating around in the Senate. And there's another bill too, which I don't recall the acronym for. 3 bills on the same thing at the same time? If there were ever evidence of a conspiracy, I'd say this more than qualifies.

Hollywood commies! MCCARTHY WAS RIGHT!! D:

      ReplyDelete
    40. @Hawklaser Yeah, I was going to post in reaction to someone else: Our Internet would end up worse than China's.. because China promotes the piracy of American products. Piracy makes up 20% of their economy, after all!

      ReplyDelete
    41. We are a very powerful force. I'm sure we all know that, right? So I'm just gonna throw this out there... not saying we truly should do this if no one wants to. But we could... I don't know... overthrow the U.S. government? We could do it. But you know... whatever you guys want to do is fine. I'm sure protesting will work out okay. Just wanted to throw that out there. -This is a joke. (Or is it?) Don't lock me up for conspiring against the government.

      ReplyDelete
    42. @Jebin Zedalu Seriously, the bill had just as many Democrat supporters as Republican. I think SOPA and PIPA have given us all the proof we need that BOTH parties are out to screw us over. Let's not forget, Bush passed TARP, which pissed us all off, then Obama promises change and what does he do? Gives an EVEN BIGGER bailout to the banks! All while letting them continue to forclose on the people they suckered into their deceptive loaning practices.

Rule: NEVER TRUST CAREER POLITICIANS!! No matter which party they come from! The only thing they care about is getting reelected so they can keep fleecing the public and buying more votes to get reelected again... and so on and so forth. An ouroboros of corruption.

      ReplyDelete
    43. For the first time in my life, I actually listened to a Ghost broadcast and didn't disagree with everything he said.

FUCK YEAH GHOST, THE MELTING POT OF ALCOHOL PREVAILS!

      ReplyDelete
    44. @Arothyss At least the BP oil will eventually go away. Getting rid of a bad law is harder than getting rid of lung cancer. Remember Prohibition? That's what we're headed for here. Remember the new crime syndicates it created? That little group called The Mob? Yeah, SOPA is kinda gonna do that, only this time it'll be the Russian mob who takes control, in cohoots with the Chinese government-sponsored piractes. They already have the hacker armies.

Here's a concise explanation of why SOPA is so awful: http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20111115/18152616785/hackers-aclu-consumer-rights-groups-human-rights-groups-many-more-all-come-out-against-sopa.shtml

Look at how many human rights groups are against these monstrous bills, and see how powerful corporations and oppressive governments could use this to their advantage over the common man.

Boycott Hollywood. Boycott the music industry. It's easy, I've done it since last year! (the stuff they've been making isn't even worth the time for me to pirate it! Ha!) Unlike oil, we don't need movies and music to drive our cars. They DEPEND on us buying their crap, but we don't need them to live! And it's about time those elite assholes got that memo!

Yes, ONE person being inactive or active will make such a huge difference.

After all, that's why Wal-Mart fails when people boycott it and Circuit City stayed afloat while a few supported it-

OH. RIGHT. DIDN'T FUCKING HAPPEN YOU MORON. BECAUSE THAT'S NOT HOW THINGS FUCKING GODDAMN WORK GODDAMN IT.

      ReplyDelete
    50. Please don't get conservatives and Republicans confused. The party these days has very little to do with the set of values. (I'm a conservative and I wish a speedy death to SOPA/PIPA.)

    53. @Something To Quack About
      Indeed.

People like you are the ones who will never do anything special in life. If you want this world to change, then you have to be the one who's willing to lead the charge, or at least participate in it.

Remember the Russian dude who lit himself on fire in the middle of the square and consequently started an upheaval?

Yeah, he's also (indirectly) responsible for inspiring people from other nations to rise up against their corrupt governments.

So please continue to shove your nose up your flank. Who knows? You just might figure out what you ate for lunch.
