I got all excited... and then now I think I have been trolled. :(
ReplyDelete@PurpleSnowPlow I thought Sethisto's mane is relatively darkened ginger. Also, saying Phoe's mane is pinkish doesn't sound quite right. Last time I checked it was magenta. Same about Cereal's mane, it's navy.
ReplyDeleteMore troll should include "fun facts then and now!" sections:
ReplyDelete---Facts Then and Now---
- The name "Hewlett-Packard" was decided upon a coin toss, that Dave originally won.
- HP was founded in a small shed/garage in the backyard of a friend and professors home.
- William Hewlett served as an officer in the Army during the second World war.
- HP is currently over 400,000 employees strong globally.
- HP currently operates in over 172 Countries.
- We live for one reason only, and that is to contribute to society.
- HP Strongly opposes the SOPA bill with our Microsoft Allies.
- HP is constantly inventing for a new today, and a brighter tomorrow.
@Princess Luna *Not magenta, maroon.
ReplyDeleteOMG
ReplyDeleteI MUST HAVE!!!
>Got a new laptop a few months ago
ReplyDelete>See this
Confound these ponies
Oh man, is it really going to take a whole day for this to clear as "troll" or "not troll"? As soon as someone poked this as illegitimate, I can only think it is all a lie...
ReplyDeleteOn the plus side, all the EqD adverts I'm seeing have switched to selling me real HP laptops. :P
ReplyDelete@Nostalgia Schmaltz
ReplyDelete150$ would be possible, if it has lots of ads and applications from Hasbro on it, maybe even customized on an educational Linux distribution. The problem is though, that every Laptop does these things anyway, it gets a lot cheaper if they put some crapware on it. I am more than happy about this, because the first thing I do with a new laptop is always to reinstall windows 7, possibly on a new SSD :) Really, if one has problems with the crap software on HP-Laptops (or other labels), it's his own fault ^^
Anyways, it really would need to be a special sale and HP would make a lot more advertisement for a 150$ laptop than just post some art on DA. If true, we would here about this soon, I remain skeptical.
There is something else that strikes me as strange: in the comments he said, the maximum would be 4gb ddr3 ram. Are there actually any new (!) motherboards where this is the maximum? Most I know easily handle 8gb or 16gb. Also: Why the usb 3.0 port? They are somewhat expensive and not really necessary for an entry-level laptop. The specifications are a bit weird all in all, they don't exactly match what one would expect for a 150$ laptop and sound more like wish-fulfillment.
@Dantes_Grill
ReplyDeleteReally? Because I went to Intel's site, to i3 mobile processors, and all of them were marked as $225.
Even if it is just $100, you can't get all the other components for $50. A laptop with these specs is easily $500-$600.
How is Hasbro letting them do this? I'm gonna wait until we get photo conformation of some kind.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if that mouse could work with my Macbook Pro...
they have posted a document that should confirm that it's a legitimate account: http://hewlettpackard.deviantart.com/#/d4nwnmn
ReplyDelete@Nostalgia Schmaltz
ReplyDeleteThat is pricing in quantities of 1000. HP would order in quantities of 1000000+ and also as a major repeat customer probably get the chips for less than half the stated price.
(not that this is real ofc)
>Tekaramity no longer a mod
ReplyDeleteUh oh.
Now, who is Cody Brantley?
ReplyDeleteI'm rather dubious of the authenticity of this posting and of the DA account in question.
ReplyDelete*Clap clap clap*
ReplyDeleteWell played, well played!
@The One That Give You The Warning
ReplyDeleteI think this is more than a simple troll. It's much too elaborate for that.
He deleted that link with his name, and he's deleting comments calling him a troll (although, kp-shadowsquirrel's is still up there, which leads me to believe he's not the brightest crayon in the pack.)
My guess is that this is very, very preliminary info, at best. HP and Hasbro may be testing the grounds for something like this, and could just nix it if they don't think it would work out. But that's not very likely.
In the deleted doc (assuming there's truth to it,) it said that he was a voluntary employee, so he may have information. The fact that a person by his name has posted a lot of fanboyish comments at the HP page (I'll do him the service of not giving his name, although it's already out there, I'm afraid) leads me to believe that HP might have said "Here's some info. Target people on dA and see what they like from these designs. We may offer you a paying position in the future."
It's more likely that the laptop renderings are be of his own doing to try to get something like that to be considered by HP, but he doesn't have that kind of clearance to do so.
tl;dr I think the guy's a HP fanboy that may have a loose contract with HP to be an interactive ad on dA. He got too excited and too big for his pants, and made something that he's probably going to regret.
HP is now officially awesome! Tho, they are only entry level laptops. And I just bought one. :(
ReplyDeleteIf it has an AMD APU inside and does not have one of those godawful lowrez borderline-useless 1366x768 displays, I'd gladly buy one.
ReplyDeleteSeriously though, in the days of ribbon toolbar and tall taskbars, who thought 768px tall PC displays were good for the mass market?
I Dell makes shells like this for my m14x we are in buisness.
ReplyDeleteDang... v.v
ReplyDelete-gives infinite hugs to Tek- I love you, best friend. We were both played by this account.....
I currently have a Dell, but I may just have to consider this when I need a new laptop, since mine's a couple years old.
ReplyDeleteHP is best pony
Finally we got confirmation.
ReplyDeleteI have a link. Discussion over.
ReplyDeleteHope I did that HTML right. If not, the link should still be in there.
Elaborate troll, overexcited fanboy, or (less likely) underinformed HP Facebook Community Manager.
Lol @ all the white knights saying "it's not tek it's not tek!". It was obvious. The account seemed to love him to death yet could not say what he apparently did, and now after it's been debunked, Tek is no longer a mod.
ReplyDelete:3
Tek losing his mod credentials over this seems harsh. I'd be really surprised if he'd been in on this, and he's done some great things for the site.
ReplyDeleteThe price was just too low for the hardware.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't help but notice that the first time I read the description.
If it were real and they'd ask for our input, they'd show more than just the back rendered. They'd show the keyboard and ports and basically everything you see on every PC concept page.
It still got my hopes up for the span of a few minutes. Yay?
Nay.
If/when it does happen, It will be Glorious!
ReplyDeleteWell worth the wait.
Guys, I don't know anything about Tek, but he was obviously in on this. Even so, I think demoting him was harsh, since this was obviously just a bit of fun. Hilarious fun, I might add. =P
ReplyDelete@Joe
ReplyDeleteIt's not Tek. That's the thing. Being his best friend and having contact with him 24/7, he wouldn't do a thing like this. If you knew him, you'd know that he isn't the one to troll like this. Honestly, people.
@Tears of a Valedictorian
Tek was not in on it.

ReplyDeleteI new it had to be fake when I saw this.
ReplyDeletehttp://hewlettpackard.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=24#/d4krwvx
@Kixu
ReplyDeleteNo, Tek was not in on this. He fell for their friendliness, as anyone would. I did too.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BP-jJTqbwXI
ReplyDeleteBut still, if you really want a "pony" laptop THAT badly...go print a cutie mark on a sticker sheet and stick it to the back of your laptop. *gasp* instant "pony" laptop!
Maybe HP will take the hint from the slew of comments on the fake and actually do something similar.
ReplyDeleteI can hope...
Aww lame. If this was real then HP would have made a lot of money. Maybe some offical laptop covers will pop up in the future?
ReplyDelete@TickleMeFrosty
ReplyDeleteIf it wasn't him, why is he no longer a mod, hm? Seems awfully strange that this would get debunked as fake and suddenly he's no longer a mod...
@TickleMeFrosty
ReplyDeleteThat's what I figured. He seemed very earnest and painstaking in his and Phoe's interview with Jaysson,
It's an honest mistake, and no one died, so this shouldn't erase all the hard work he's done for EQD.
I don't mean to be a prude... but journalism should involve in depth research before posting to the masses. We're dealing with thousands of people, and false news doesn't make you look that good, especially when the higher-ups actually visit this site. I haven't lost my faith in EQD or anything, and support this site as a whole. I just think that a little more care should be put into the research of an article before the final decision. :)
ReplyDelete@Joe
ReplyDeleteI have no idea why Seth would do that. It's possible Tek himself requested to be removed from mod powers after a big slip up like this. I wish he would contact me to help me understand too...
@TickleMeFrosty
ReplyDeleteWell, if Tek really is innocent, I'm sure things will get sorted out. =)
I figured this was trolling and still rated it 5-stars. Please be nice to Tek :)
ReplyDelete@Tears of a Valedictorian
ReplyDeleteTek is probably really embarrassed at messing up, though. Plus, a lot of people are blaming him for it (especially since the account liked Tek a lot too, making it seem like he did it all along which is untrue). Messing up this badly in front of many fans doesn't feel good...
Well, looks like that HP account has been deactivated.
ReplyDeleteAs for Tek, let's not make hasty conclusions about his involvement or lack of involvement with this. We don't have enough info right now to come to a good conclusion, so let's just wait and see.
@Kixu
ReplyDeleteHopefully.
@TickleMeFrosty
ReplyDeleteIt is well known that he has a connection to EqD, that probably makes him a target for trolls. That would explain why he was getting so much attention from that HP account.
Checked deviantart page one more time, it's gone now.
ReplyDelete@mattwhite924
ReplyDeleteTek was not involved, I can give 100% proof of that. But, I do agree that we don't know the full situation. As to why he isn't mod anymore, that beats me... v.v
@Nostalgia Schmaltz
ReplyDeleteSimple as, right?
Thing is, had it been real (even if we didn't buy them,) it would have been cool for there to be a line of FiM laptops, no?
And besides, we can always get episodes of the show or merchandise on YouTube or elsewhere. But we buy merchandise from Hasbro/with the Hasbro name to support the show.
@TickleMeFrosty
ReplyDeleteIt's really easy to do when you want something to be true. I did it this week.
A twitter account appeared this week for (reclusive/ publicity-shy author) Cormac McCarthy. And I was all "OMG, it's Cormac McCarthy! Hey everyone, Cormac McCarthy's on twitter!", and retweeting his tweets, going on about how awesome it was.
And then it got debunked, because obviously Cormac McCarthy isn't on twitter. Dude doesn't even own a computer. But I'm such a fan that I believed it unquestioningly.
Enthusiasm gets in the way of reason sometimes.
@Flutterfan
ReplyDeleteI feel kind of bad for Tek, but I lol'd at your comment in any case.
@Tears of a Valedictorian
ReplyDeleteIndeed it does. I've done that way too many times with Youtube and Tiwtter accounts too. =S People seriously need to get a life and stop being fake on the internet.
@Verbose
ReplyDeleteYeah, but..."FIM laptop" would be no different than a normal laptop, except it has a cutie mark on the back of it. Like you said, the only difference is that (some of the) money would go to Hasbro.
If people are dying for an "FIM laptop", just stick some images to the back of your laptop. Instant "pony laptop"!
Well, at least it was fun while it lasted, I did try to do my best to stop the flood of 'HP = BAD' comments, so I regret nothing.
ReplyDelete@Nostalgia Schmaltz Checked it out, saw i looked at the stationary stuff =P
ReplyDeleteSince this is a hoax, you can make a pony laptop with a vinyl decal easily. We have a vinyl machine, email [email protected]
ReplyDeleteWow. What a disappointment. ;_;
ReplyDeleteFUCKING TEK I WAS EXCITED
ReplyDeleteHere is the Facebook post where HP found out about it: https://www.facebook.com/HP/posts/10151217644135290
ReplyDelete...
ReplyDeleteWhat happen?
Did we get promised fake goodies?
Whodunit?
Are they edible?
Can I eat them?
I love flambéed troll...
@Arothyss
ReplyDeleteA pretty dedicated troll set up a DA pretending to be HP, they put a lot of effort into it, it was a long term thing, since December (pretty long term just for the lulz).
Over time they buttered up Tek (more like zap apple jam instead of butter) and then dropped this fake product mockup:
Link
Tek then posted it here, along with a mockup they did for a Pinkie Pie mouse.
It seems the whole account was set up for this laptop hoax payoff, maybe to coincide with the release of the episode about the Flim Flam con artists.
