A few days ago a post went up displaying two new ponies, Shining Armor and Princess Cadence. Apparently the duo is actually going to be showing up in the series. Andrew Francis is the voice-actor behind Braeburn, and recently tossed this up on his Twitter page.
I guess that also confirms a third Alicorn?
Other news from deep within the bowels of the internet also pointed at this particular episode being a season finale, we are sticking those under the rumor tag for now though.

I'm sticking with my guess from the wedding announcement post... Royal Wedding season finale in Trottingham, with the Mane six as bridesmaids and the CMC's as flower girls. Which means they have to introduce Shining Armor and/or Cadence beforehand, making it a mini-arc like the Gala arc from season one.
And again, a 2 god pantheon is kind of odd. Most father gods left a string of children and demigods all over creation. There might not be more hanging out in Equestria, but if their father was anything like Zeus then Celestia and Luna should have plenty of siblings out there somewhere.

1) origins of the Alicorns episode (not very plausible, considering the original photos of Shining Armor and Cadence had them in close proximity to the main six, all wearing wedding regalia)

And I think that Cadence image above just made up her Cutie Mark... she was in a wedding dress in the images we saw of her before, so you couldn't see her flank.

This is probably the only time I've ever been *sorta* iffy on any decision Hasbro or the writing team have made. They better (and likely will, I'm sure) have a good reason to add in a 3rd alicorn to the universe. We've got the rules of day and night for crying out loud, I don't know where Cadence could fit in. The ONLY thing I can see happening is that *maybe* she controls the sunrise and sunset, but even then that's kind of lame... and we've seen Celestia raise the sun all on her own completely once.
I trust our writers, they haven't messed up on us that bad. Will be cautiously waiting and remaining hopeful to see how this turns out.

Then again, they've never directly stated that Celestia and Luna are the only ones, just (given by the fact that they're the only ones that've been seen in the show so far)given us the impression that they're very rare.

Also! Horrible OCs are still horrible OCs, whether they're Alicorns or not. You don't have to accept them any more than any others.
It's also possible that, instead of the character only being in season 3, that he's simply allowed to talk about him now that the news of his existence has broken (officially or otherwise.)
We're getting some royal Canterlot functions this weekend... maybe they'll start dropping some references or even an appearance. Personally, I'm hoping that at least Luna finally gets to show up in Canterlot.

Alicorn is a fan term, for the most part (technically it's another word for unicorn, IIRC). Outside of Celestia and Luna's special duties in controlling the sun and moon; winged unicorns may not necessarily be as special as we all think...
At least that's the perspective the canon seems to be taking. Then again, Celestia and Luna are immortal or at least incredibly long-lived, if that's not special, what is?

Celestia and Luna are the ruling princesses. They control the sun and moon. Shining armor may or may not be an alicorn, and is most likely a unicorn (based on the image I've seen).
It looks like Princess Cadence has a sun and clouds as her cutie mark. She doesn't look evil and it is improbable she is at any point evil like Luna, so thats a bad sign (meaning she may not be overly special). I really wish I had more to go on by that cutie mark. It looks like a generic alicorn cutie mark with a sun and clouds, so Im not entirely sure it will be plot relevant. The clouds are controlled by pegasi, so that theory is impossible. It certainly doesn't look like she's an alicorn that is destined to save equestria or something... Argh! It's looking more and more like a third generic alicorn in the royal sister family! I can't think of a narrative that would introduce her in a way that makes any sense! I thought this post would get rid of my panic, but it's actually increasing my panic! Noooooo!
So I guess that pink Celestia was actually Princess Cadence in disguise.. >.>

There are all sorts of openings in a pantheon still. A goddess of the sea, or of the harvest, or of love. The name would certainly suggest a goddess of music, perhaps.
All of these (except perhaps love) would pale next to the power of the sun or the moon, but that's never stopped other pantheons from including them.
How would you guy's react if you all learned that a third alicorn being revealed later was in Lauren Faust's plans all along? I'm not saying that it is, but come on guys, put a little more perspective on this

I'd actually feel relatively fine if Equestria was only one kingdom, and Princess Cadence was perhaps a ruler of another, nearby kingdom with their own ponies. Still wouldn't make total sense, assuming Celestia and Luna control Day and Night after all.
Perhaps Equestria is an empire and Cadence could be the leader of a region within Equestria's borders? I forgot what the official term was, it'll come to me after I post this, I'm sure of it. But like, maybe she is the leader of a country/region that Equestria has dominance over, while recognizing that it is a seperate land at the same time. There's an official term for it, I hope I explained myself well enough.
I think that would be the best way for me to accept their being another Alicorn leader, though I'm definitely open-minded to other ideas. Still doesn't explain what her cutie mark speciality is.

Look for it next time you see an episode. Right before Celestia opens the scroll with the photo of the Mane Six inside, there's a stained-glass window to the right. You see the sun, a ringed planet with a moon, and then presumably Equestria at the bottom of the window (on a round planet, no less).
I also wonder where the Lesson Zero "mystery alicorn" fits into this...

Did i read correctly a while back, stating that an some episode they worked on(season 3 maybe) was going to be not so well? I really hope this isnt it. My only ubsumption is that perhaps there r other countries than Equestria(seeing that they DO have a globe featuring different continents)and she would rule another. But that still wouldnt be fair, because Celestia and Luna controll day/night. There would be war! Hopefully its just some kind of mythological pony tale like nightmare moon! The image is a fan drawing, and likely a completely made up Cutie Mark. The only real artwork we have seen of her was in a gown, so we never saw her mark.

Why a third Alicorn, Why are the princes not Alicorns, Where is the queen and king, who's idea was this, What significance could these pony's have, did we really need to add new alicorns, could we not just dig deeper into the one's we currently have, I would love to get to know luna or celestia better, please please please don't let this suck please, just don't let this addition be bad, I don't want this being unimportant and unexplained
@BlurThat's my gut reaction too - we've barely seen any canon development of Luna, they should do more with her and Celestia before they even think of expanding the pantheon.
But this episode is a long way out and I still remain confident in the skill of the writers. We'll just have to see how things go when we get there.
I am not sure that "Alicorn" is necessarily synonymous with "Goddess."
The bloodlines of Royals may be Alicorns (or, perhaps just FEMALE royals, since the males seem to just be Unicorns), but not ALL of them may be divine.
After all, none of the myths so far have mentioned any other Alicorns than the Sisters.
Also, even if all Alicorns are longlived/immortal, they don't have to be OLD, too. Cadence could be a 25 year old immortal.
So, all Goddesses are Alicorns, but the reverse may not be true...?

CEO, "That's right, royal weddings. So what do we got in the show that can do that?"

CEO, "Not that purple one all the Bronies are swooning over. Nah, we need something young and fresh. We need another winged unicorn princess, that's pink and young to have a wedding."

CEO, "Now you see where I'm coming from, push it, we'll call her Princess Cadence and she controls the weather."

Mark my words, one day we shall see canon sea ponies. They must exist! Nopony had ever even thought of zebras before Zecora. Therefore there must be some place where they have their own civilization.

It never was part of "Lauren's plans". The so-called "show's bible' contains only two alicorn creations of her: Luna and Celestia. Sje is not involved in to creation of those characters, and more than that, fi you follower her replies on DA you would knew that she even didn't know about Luna's new mane and changes that was made to her.
She no longer affects the how, keep that in mind.

Equestria isn't a world. It's one country. It's been called a country on the show, hence maybe Princess Cadence may be the ruler of a different nation/country.
That's my head cannon right now anyway. Looking forward to seeing what they do with this.

I like the idea of different pony countries being ruled by alicorns. It's sensible.
But the whole "Celestia and Luna control the astral bodies" makes the concept of new alicorns feel off.
To expand on my earlier comment:
If alicorns are always associated with celestial bodies in MLP:FiM, then there are room for (by my count) four or five alicorns-
1. The Sun (Celestia)
2. The Moon (Luna)
3. The World (???)
4. Unnamed Ringed Planet In Title Sequence (???)
5. Unnamed Ringed Planet's Moon (???)
Take your pick on which this Cadence character is. My bet, based on the colors, is the ringed planet.

Well, this could either kill my fic's backstory for the two, or serve to strengthen it...
Either way, I'll have to wait and see.
And I doubt this is the end of the season. First off, eleven episodes is an odd number to stop on. And second, I'm pretty sure a full 26-episode season was confirmed quite a ways back. Heck, we already know what the next episode's going to be, we have a rough air date, and we know it's the twelfth episode of a season.
@palatankWell, 65 episodes is usually the standard number for a modern animated series. IF that is the case here, maybe we should just be glad that we got 65 episodes of the mane six and Equestria out of it?

I trust Studio B knows exactly what they are doing. I thought Discord was going to be a stallion version of Nightmare Moon, and when I saw my first teaser clip of him, I thought he was a weak villain. Then I saw Return To Harmony Part 1 and was quickly blown away by what a badass he was.
I could live with more canon alicorns provided that only Celestia and Luna are goddess-tier.
It's perfect really, it let's them have more of the race if they want 'em but maintains Celestia and Luna's power levels and dominance.
Besides, it's not like we don't already have examples of "more powerful than the average" unicorn and pegasi, what with Twilight and Dash. So if they want to make "mortal and mundane" alicorns, go ahead and let them.
I really don't see what the big deal is having another Alicorn. It's already been established, by Faust herself no less, that other princes and princesses exist but have less power, both in magic and authority, than the Celestia and Luna. The existence of another Alicorn princess changes nothing!
Now is the time to start throwing out all these crazy world-building theories. If Season 2 has taught us anything, it's that Equestria is a very different and more complex world than what we previously assumed.
By the way, if there was an alicorn ruler of "the World", wouldn't the Princesses be infringing on its territory?

As I mentioned earlier, there is no "alicorn" in the canon, as the name has never been applied. They're technically winged-unicorns.
But it's clear Celestia and Luna are of a special variety of winged-unicorn. As such, perhaps there are just, as you allude to, lower tiers.

As far as I know, it has never even been officially established that the princesses are goddesses. This is merely assumed by fans because of their ability to control celestial bodies and long lifespan.
My guess is genetics were just kinder to her than they were to Blueblood.

a THIRD Alicorn?! I... I cannot comprehend the reaction I'm having to this. Anger? Disappointment? Eagerness at opened opportunities? Argh!
Where's the other story? The one with the screen shots. I can't find it anywhere.
My theory: she's not an alicorn (all three races in one pony) but rather the combination of unicorn and pegasus. So occasionally there are normal ponies who happen to have the traits of any combination of two of the races, but Celestia and Luna are still the only two true alicorns.
For one, in those pictures we saw, Cadence didn't actually seem to be any larger than a normal pony. The Shining Armor guy is taller, and he just looks like a regular unicorn. And then her hair isn't all magical like Celestia and Luna's either. So yeah, it would make sense that she's on a tier between alicorns and normal ponies.
So going by her cutie mark I'd have to say she's the princess of overcast days.
No wonder she's been kept in the background...

Seriously I have no problem with another Alicorn since they rank up to angels rather than gods in my head canon (long lived yes, very powerful yes, omnipotent no, immortal unlikely, omniscent not at all) and more than two angels are alright by me
1 more thought. Maybe there's an Alicorn for every element like in that Avatar cartoon.

I'm having a lot of mixed feelings over Cadence, think it's more an uneasy feeling and I might just be tired and not open to new possibilities.
I only see two possible things Cadence could be. She's on level with Celestia and Luna, which as stated you open that door too wide it leads to ridiculousness. How many are there and who exactly is top dog, so to speak. Equal rule with so many is a problem.
Other possibility, she isn't of the same level as Luna and Celestia. It really makes her character lame and if just made to have a Royal Wedding in the show, she's a throwaway character then in my opinion.
Will have to see, but my gut is telling me this is something very bad.

@Bronies who are freaking out: Ah, quit your whining and worrying will yah? Since when have the writers ever made an epic blunder? We all know how this is gonna turn out; everyone's gonna get hyped and worried and worked up about how awful it could be......then calm down when the episode hits and the third alicorn is explained well and she fits in with the universe and it's all good. We saw it for Luna, we'll see it here. Even IF they were forced to put her in by Hasbro and they hadn't planned for her, the writers aren't stupid. We really don't know all that much about Equestria, and as such it's a flexible universe; they'll find a way to put her in in a way that makes sense. Have some faith in the people who brought you this show in the first place, eh? ^_^

She could be seen in a Flashback or be a fictional character within the show (Storybook plot).
My guess is she's the ruler of Trottingham. Judging by Pipsqueaks accent it's probably a separate nation from Equestria.
Each nation might have it's own alicorn monarch.
Maybe she has no special powers?
I'm thinking the whole raising the sun and moon thing was a power Celestia and Luna gained after they defeated Dicord with the elements of harmony. Since I remember them saying he was the ruler before they rose up against him. If that's true then the concept of sun and moon rising at certain times wouldn't really happen with Dicord ruling.
And if I'm wrong? She'll probably appear in two episodes at most then we'll never hear from her again.

Amusingly, my suggestion also works to create an aire of legitimacy to alicorn OCs ...with a twist!
Such OCs are indeed super-special rare, given that the show has proven that there's either not very many around or they don't make a lot of public appearances. But hold, one's alicorn now has no excuse to be stupidly over-powered because there's lower power-tiers that may go as far down as having only the most basic of magic and weather control.
I've spoken elsewhere recently about my problems with over-done OCs (especially the alicorn ones) so it's kind of funny that Hasbro suddenly swoops in and nixes the issue.
To be honest people, I liked the series better when it was AN OPEN CANVAS.
What do I mean by this? It's where you could, iunno, CREATE YOUR WORLD within the series.
Like with Faust, it was a free project, she could do -anything- with it. We all jumped in to My Little Pony like it was MS Paint and we were handed the coloring tools.
Now? Too many rules, too much "THIS IS CANON NOW, FOREVER."
Soon, we're gonna have this fandom hardcore into what was in the show like it was federal law.
I can see why many of the My Little Pony staff started bailing.
I'm kind of hoping for it to be some cleverly well written episode in which one of the mane six falls asleep and pulls an Alice in Wonderland and she pictures herself and the rest of the mane 6 and the CMC and maybe even Celestia and Luna at a mythological wedding in their mind and they wake up at the end. It would be one hell of a writing experiment, perhaps a new writer's vision or maybe a veteran writer's shot in the dark so to speak. But heck that's my head-canon but if it is something that isn't dreamed up or a story or maybe even two ponies which were deemed mythological and through the actions of celestia and the girls they somehow conjour them back to existence. Possibly the original rulers before discord who were banished to the saturn planet in the title sequence and have been brought back and would like to return to their planet. Still would prefer them to not be existent but I was afraid when Luna's mane was different and discord was introduced but the writers always pull through and create gold whenever hasbro may or may not be forcing toy ideas on them. For instance, people say Rainbow Dash needing a pet was a toy idea (personally I think it was to give Rainbow Dash a companion to play off of but each to his own) if this is the case they turned "ooh pets we must have pets for moar toyzz!!!1" into a 22 minute animal deathmatch and a 4 minute Rainbow Dash/Fluttershy broadway number. I have incredible confidence in these guys and I would assume they are pretty resistant to hasbro forcing ideas on them remember Jayson has said before "Why fix what ain't broken right?" and I can only assume they are not trying to "fix" the Celestia and Luna goddess symbolism. But my lord I have typed way more than I thought i was going to so there's my obnoxiously long wall of text I guess, it rarely is used but it happens. But whatever they want to do is fine by me should work out for the best of us.
TL:DR don't over-react before we have seen anything but speculation rumors, images, and tweets who knows what certain ponies looked like before they got into the show. Hey, for all we know Prince Blueblood was originally an alicorn prince. :P

still doesn't explain why she is an alicorn and JUST a random royal unicorn (since blueblood was labeled as a relative of celestia and he isn't an alicorn)
besides if I recall correctly on her deviant pague (a while ago like 5 to 6 months) Faust said that Luna and Celestia were the onli alicorns so this is something that was obviously changed after she left and again probably forced down by hasbro
My bronies, just calm down, it's not like the end of the world, it's just another character that will confirm that Celestia and Woona are not the only alicorns in existence and maybe we can catch a glimpse of Woona's and Celestia's family...

I'd say an entire episode about a royal wedding sounds boring, but then again...
Last year I would have said an episode about a slumber party, taking care of a sick bird, passing out tickets to a party, or making pretty dresses sounded pretty boring too. So I'm just gonna sit back and soak up the awesomeness that I'm sure it's gonna be, y'all should do the same.
