Apple cider is just unsweetend and unfilterd juice from apples( non alcoholic unless it's fermented). However, the description just says cider, and that is alcoholic. Alcohol is canon I guess.
ReplyDeleteLet's just hope big Mac doesn't die after beating the machine.
@the bees effing knees
ReplyDeleteActually, in the US "Cider" is used primarily for the non-alcoholic variety, and it's assumable that the show is being marketed to this country primarily. Also, Lauren actually mentioned in an interview a while back (Unfortunately I can't find it anymore, might have been a deviantart comment) that in canon there is no alcohol in the MLP world. I can verify that at least on most kids television in America alcohol is almost never mentioned except in off-hand jokes, such as "The Punch has been Spiked".
I love the John Henry refernce! Loved that story growing up as a kid. also, while cider isn't alcoholic (heck, i have sparkling apple cider on new years as a substitute for champagne) it is best served hot. I dunno, guess it's just one of those drinks. Can't wait for this episode!
ReplyDeleteci·der [sahy-der]
ReplyDeletenoun
the juice pressed from apples (or formerly from some other fruit) used for drinking, either before fermentation (sweet cider) or after fermentation (hard cider), or for making applejack, vinegar, etc.
Episode title is an alliteration. The cartoon loves its alliterations.
Applejack is the besty pony!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait!
I smell John Henry references!
ReplyDeleteAlcohol?
ReplyDeleteWhat I wouldn't give to see a drunk Twilight or Luna.
The problem is, with all respect intended Applejack is the honest country girl, which is, unfortunately, not often open for character development thus few episodes concerning her. So it's nice to see something happening.
ReplyDeleteAs for the title if i had to guess it's going to be a Paul Bunion story where the strongest and best applebucker in ponyville and possibly all of equestria, versus some new machine from the city that can supposedly do it better. Being who she is, stubborn and usually unwilling to change, she will fight against it.
Anyway looking forward to it immensely.
Signed, the Blue Horse
Yes! YES!
ReplyDeleteI live in canada, where, like the U.S. only hard cider is alcoholic, Apple cider is like a very strong apple juice with cinnamon in it, i used to drink jugs of it when i was a kid
ReplyDeleteITS NOT GOING TO BE ALCOHOLIC CIDER YOU FUCKING IDIOTS
ReplyDeleteCanon Equestria is *DRY* cotdammit, DRY!!!!!!
John Henry? NOOOOO I REMEMBER HOW THAT STORY ENDS~! [Sad] [Grimdark]
ReplyDelete@mycutiemarkisagun Did somepony order a chill pill? :>
ReplyDeletethe sheer out poor of 'alcohol' is sad...
ReplyDeleteI drink apple cider, and know something? its got not alcohol in it. Sparkling cider? same dealy-o.
Will it be alcohol? *shrugs* just sayin dont everypony be gettin their drunkard hopes up. cwoot and fwuffy poneh's probly wont makes spirits *nods*
@Truehearted
ReplyDeleteJust in defence of the outpouring of 'alcohol?' in the comments.
America and Canada are the only countries in the world where 'cider' can mean a non-alcoholic beverage.
And yeah, that's where the show's made and marketed, but a lot of people had never heard of non-alcoholic cider until now.
This is kind of funny, it's the first big cultural mix-up I've seen on EQD, because to North Americans, it's obvious that cider is a soft drink, and to people from everywhere else, it only exists as a hard drink.
I have never heard of 'soft' cider in my life until today. We just call it apple juice.
@the invincible
ReplyDeleteThese were written WAAAAY so long ago that this statement is almost silly - all of these woulda been finalised as a script late last year, early 2011...they aren't making this stuff on the go, ya know!
LOL @ all the rage over "OMG ALCOHOL CAN'T BE IN A KID'S SHOW!" idiocy. There's already been alcohol references in MLP: FiM (for that matter, there's been a drug reference, too). Alcohol isn't evil, people. Get over it.
ReplyDeleteAlso: skimming past comments is bad, mmmm'kay? There's at least a dozen comments each of "OMG I did/didn't know apple cider could/couldn't be alcoholic." Ignorance on both sides of the fence there.
All that being said, looking forward to some AJ action. The title reminded me of PowerThirst for some reason, as well as the episode of South Park where Cartman was using Super Weight Gain 9000 or some such for some retarded reason.
Ponies... and alcohol... this sounds like the beginning to a teen rated fanfic, if only they would challenge the Apples to a cider DRINKING contest
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, please do not forget that it is alright to:
ReplyDelete-Enjoy all the episodes
-Enjoy some of the episodes
-Not enjoy any of the episodes
-Have a favorite pony
-Not have a favorite pony
It's not alright to expect others to share your opinion on those matters (or any other matters of taste) and attack them when they don't.
Second of all, why is this alcohol / non-alcohol thing such a big deal? I just don't understand. It's not particularly important for the episode or for the world as a whole, or am I wrong about that?
AJ is best pony and is finally getting her hooves on S2 episodes.
ReplyDeleteThis pleases me.
I'm a UK brony and I'm having Deja Vu here.
ReplyDelete"Cider" has been canon since sisterhooves social(listen to rarity's sleep talk at the beginning).
from the debate I had about alcohol then, the MLP cider is american 'soft cider', not rest of the world 'hard cider'. and alcohol/drugs/other substances has been canon since season 1, with the "punch being spiked" line.
I thought you people knew these things already
Anyone remember the tall tale about John Henery? This episode seems like it's going to be like that.
ReplyDeleteFlim Flam? As in, FiMFlan?
ReplyDeleteAlso: I must be the only person who doesn't know who or what the John Henry story is. The only John Henry I know of is Mr. Irons (and then even barely).
ReplyDeleteGuess I'll have to Google it sometime.
AND EVERYPONY GETS HIGH FROM CIDER AT THE END!
ReplyDeleteI hope it's extra alcohol in the cider to make the episode extra cheerful =D
ReplyDeleteKnow what else cider is good for? Relaxation. Some people here sound like they need it.
ReplyDeleteIf you're tired of bucking around with the ordinary, try Applejacks - Hard Spiced Apple Cider and your night will be all wrangled up.
ReplyDeleteOh happy days, more AJ!
ReplyDeleteNow if we could get a Fluttershy episode soon I'd be content as can be :]
why does something tell me that the brothers will cheat just to get the farm
ReplyDeleteQuestion...is Luna gonna be there? jus asking i'll watch it any way jus wanna know cause she's so AWESOME!!!
ReplyDeleteSparkling or flat non-alcoholic cider?
ReplyDeleteWOOT! Cider baby!
ReplyDeleteTwo AJ episodes in a row? MY THEORY HOLDS TRUE! S2 has a tendency to have two episodes placed closely together with the same protagonist/s. 2 Twilight episodes (I count Luna Eclipsed as a Twilight ep), 2 CMC episodes, 2 Rainbow Dash Episodes, 2 Rarity episodes (Secret of Excess is part Rarity), and now 2 AJ episodes.
ReplyDeleteNot a perfect trend but I'm claiming it as truth.
These "absolute" statements of "Cider is of course ALCOHOLIC/NON-ALCOHOLIC (and you are all stupid in the head for thinking otherwise)" are quite disheartening. Please remember that this fandom is international and that your personal frame of reference may not apply to your fellow brony. Apparently what is known as cider in the rest of the world is called hard cider in North America while NA cider is a non-alcoholic fruit drink.
ReplyDeleteIn Sweden, "cider" is a fermented fruit drink and thusly contains alcohol, though the level may vary. If the alcohol level is beneath 2.25 vol % it is considered non-alcoholic and thusly ok to give to kids. If it isn't fermented at all, it isn't allowed to be called cider but rather "sparkling fruit drink of cider type" (although most people will pronounce the latter as "alcohol-free cider").
A parallell to this cider difference is the musical instrument that is known as tenor horn in the British cultural sphere and as alto horn pretty much everywhere else.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure there are many other examples of things having different names or words having different meanings.
I believe in the episode Sisterhooves Social, Rarity said while sleeping, "Spiced warm apple cider," or the sort.
ReplyDeleteI like apple cider, the only I've ever drank was the non-alcoholic sort. Either way, doubt the cider made in the show will be alcoholic, and that's fine.
BUT, I'm very sure we'll see at least one drunk joke, it's just too good to pass up. Maybe Berry Punch happily swimming in a pool of cider?
Still, this seems to be a comic episode whilst the last roundup is for character-centric, either open thy mind, open thy mind...
Uhm...Apple Cider is Non Alcoholic.
ReplyDeleteIt's what you call the SoftCider in the family. Like Softdrinks >:3
So no. Alcohol is still not canon.
ITT: People who are too dumb to know that Apple Cider isn't alcohol... Just because you can MAKE something alcoholic doesn't mean that base product is alcoholic...
ReplyDelete"ZOMG LEMONADE! THEY ARE ALCOHOLICS!"
A few people have cited the John Henry reference. Hope this doesn't mean Applejacks dying.
ReplyDeletedear lord, flim flam? nobody thinks back too scooby doo?
ReplyDeleteCider is now canon?! Awesome! Drunk ponies, all around! xD
ReplyDeleteOne thing is true, they may not be talking about alcoholic cider. However, you can't say there haven't been alcohol references. Most were subtle but others were not. Examples:
ReplyDelete-Twilight drinking out of a huge cup normally used for alcohol.
-Spike coming in with a lampshade over his head.
-Spike's Appletini joke.
-"The punch has been 'Spiked'"
-Rarity drinking out of what I think was a martini glass in Sweet and Elite.
-Some would say that Berry Punch is in and of herself an alcohol reference.
You can get away with alcohol being canon as long as it's subtle. And those who are claiming you can't because it's a kids show, I only have one word: Animaniacs.
@Metajoker
ReplyDeleteShe didn't actually say that alcohol doesn't exist, just that "nopony in Equestria approves of boozing it up".
Why is everyone talking about apple cider like it's an alcoholic drink?
ReplyDeleteI live in the US; I don't know about the rest of the world, but here cider is non-alcoholic. I've actually never even heard of alcoholic apple cider, though maybe that's because I don't drink.
Either way, it's obviously not going to involve alcohol. Just a clash of US vs. non-US cultures/terminology here.
That's one long episode title.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for the episode =D
Will the title REALLY be : The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000 ...?
ReplyDeleteNot the best title ever, that's for sure ?
Flim Flam brothers? Oh yeah, in no way, shape or form will guys with this name ever cheat.
ReplyDeleteApple Cider is made with Apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, allspice, and cloves.
ReplyDeleteHard Cider is made basically the same way but with the addition of brewer's yeast and using the same fermentation process as you would find in making beer.
All of which could easily be found even here. And even if its isn't, it hasn't stopped them from making those afore mentioned, hidden references to Alcoholic beverages before.
No, I have no doubt that the premise behind this will be nothing more regular apple cider within the framework of the show its self, so no one here needs to work themselves into a tizzy over it.
lol at the title. Oh, and hooray, more AJ :D
ReplyDeleteHas no one had non-alchy apple cider before???
ReplyDeleteEsepcially good when its nice n' hot.
Not that I have any problems with t he harder stuff....
Assuming the Flim Flam bros. are the "mob"/"gangster" ponies we saw in that hot air baloon a while back b4 S2 started.....
FYI...now all we need is moar Flutterwin and we're golden.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI was going to hope for Pen and Teller for voiceroles.. but Teller does not speak..
ReplyDeleteSo that invalidates that headcanon. But who are they going to spoof off of for the FlimFlam Brothers?
o_o ..Apple Juice...
ReplyDelete@havoka
ReplyDelete"Why is everyone talking about apple cider like it's an alcoholic drink?"
Because, as several people keep saying, for most of the world it IS an alcoholic drink. It's only in North America there's a non-alcoholic cider, and in many countries trading standards mean it's forbidden by law to use the term "cider" when selling anything other than a fermented drink made from apples or pears.
Now the cultural clash has been cleared up it's obvious what the show's title means by "cider", but until a few hours ago many of us had never heard of non-alcoholic cider. (We do have low-alcohol ciders, but they're aimed at adults who need to keep their alcohol intake down. They're not children's drinks.)
@Eclipse
ReplyDeleteYeah but you gotta understand.
There are A LOT of idiots around these days.
bet you 50% of these people wishing for alcoholic references don't know what their talking about.
Johnny Appleseed + John Henry = FUSION HAAAAAAAAAAA
ReplyDeleteThe machine is called the "The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000"!?!
ReplyDeleteThe Flim Flam brothers are going to be Dilbert and Wally or the PHB and Dogbert. Their cutie mark's will identify them.
Cider =/= Alchohol. -_-;
ReplyDeleteHuh..learn something new everyday. I've always assumed there was an alcholic version of Apple cider(sometimes it seems like mankind is determined to make an alcholic ver. of everything), but never knew to what level til today.
ReplyDeleteSo we've got an interesting title, new villians, a possible John Henry reference, more Apple Family shenanigans and the risk of losing a farm. Should be interesting and knowing this show filled with unexpected surpeises.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteWait, there's such thing as non-alcoholic cider? You learn something new everyday...
ReplyDeleteSeason 2 has been stuffing Fluttershy in the closet. I can't say they put her on the bus because she's still around, but she's like a tag along character.
ReplyDelete:-(
Why can't they have a Fluttershy centric episode for once?
Why is everyone so serious! The common fandom consists of taking something completely out of context, changing it up a bit, and making it 10x funnier then intended. And sure it is a kids show, but going off the demographics, I don't really think it is a kid show anymore. While hasbro knows they still have little kids in there show, they will avoid this topic. There is no reason to get upset about the fandom (of people ranging from 15-30) want's some more adult content. Which is also the reason I can't wait for any upcoming fan art. A tipsy AJ comic, ah good laughs.
ReplyDeleteAnywho. A new episode, in 29 days. Cant wait, I saw the link and was like, BOOYEAH, new episode. Clicked link, just a spoiler. I think I just got trolled.Cant wait though, I do think AJ needs some light.
CHUG CHUG CHUG CHUG...
ReplyDelete@CrossoverManiac
ReplyDeleteWell, Fluttershy did get four episodes in season one (which was more than Pinkie or AJ got), but yeah, it would be nice to see her front and center for a few in season 2.
This is rather disappointing, actually....
ReplyDeleteWill there EVER be an episode special for Scootaloo?
I don't understand why they wouldn't show alcohol in this cartoon just because it is a kid's show, there are plenty of kid's shows that have alcohol, people getting drunk, etc... Which is all played for laughs. Not to mention stuff like people trying to kill each other, which is also played for laughs.
ReplyDeleteC'mon, her name is _APPLEJACK_.
ReplyDeleteWe all know what's in that cider.
@James Corck
ReplyDeleteHee hee! This is similar to a little old story of mine that I'm going to be adapting to Pony, about a guy who has to deal with a fraudulent device, and comes up with a rather unique way of dealing with the store's no return policy.
I do need to get to that story... it'll fit nicely as a side story to the "Luna vs Techology" series.
I'm fairly certain the cider is of the non-alcoholic variety, but the drunkard references are just too much fun to pass up :)
ReplyDelete* claps hooves happily* apple jack apple jack apple jack!
ReplyDeleteI'm a complete dunce when it comes to american folklore. WHAT is John Henry exactly? and why would this ep be ANYTHING like it? XD
ReplyDeleteYay Applejack! ^_^
ReplyDeleteApple Jack. Making Apple Cider. Even if american cider isn't alcoholic, you can't deny the implications of such a concept.
ReplyDeleteI assume the Flim Flam brothers are con artists.
ReplyDeleteI assume the Flim Flam brothers are con artists.
ReplyDeleteLol... you guys know apple cider isn't necessarily alcoholic, right? Such a connotation is definitely not implied in the US.
ReplyDelete@Moleman77
ReplyDeleteSilly, cider isn't alcohol. It's just a drink made from apples or whatever.
Well you need to cider to have applejack...
ReplyDeleteAs for the title... it is clearly an allusion to motor sports, where a particular race, especially rally, often has the length of the race in the name. (Baja 1000, Primm 500 etc)
Yes!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait!
Let's drink to this. *kisses Berry punch* MAN I AM DRUNK
ReplyDeleteA John Henry story titled Applejack? Kick-ass!
ReplyDelete@gingerninja
ReplyDeleteJohn Henry is a folklore hero created during the creation of the American transcontinental railroad, who worked as a 'steel-driver' - one of those who dug the tunnels and cleared the way for the railroads using a hammer and a chisel. In this story, he competes with a steam powered hammer and wins, but dies of exhaustion with a hammer in his hand.
coincidence, im now drinking some sprakling cider (non alcoholic of course)
ReplyDeleteI don't get what this alcohol fuss in america is about. I'm from Bavaria, you know. Beer doesn't count as alcohol. :-P It's basic food.
ReplyDeleteBeing 21 to buy alcohol and all those strict limitations... LOL!
@gingerninja666
ReplyDeleteActually it is kinda John Henry-ish...I'd assume at least.
Man vs machine.
Or in this case....old skool cider making earth pony style vs machine.
John Henry was about a railroad worker trying to out rail-spike a "steam-powered spiking machine"....I think lol (so sue me...i forgot the majority of the stories details -_-).
I got ninjaed by 2 hrs but was too lazy to look ;p
ReplyDeleteIn the USA apple cider really doesn't contain alcohol usually.
ReplyDeleteFK WHY NO FLUTTERSHY EPISODE GOD DAMMIT ALSKJFLAKSJFA

'bout damn time AJ got some time to shine.
ReplyDelete@Harwick
ReplyDeleteExactly. In much of the USA, cider is just spiced apple juice, nothing more.
But dang it's tasty.
Woo! Applejack gettin some good spotlight :D
ReplyDeleteHope Big Macintosh will have more lines O.o
I'm calling it now... the next episode is gonna be a Pinkie Pie episode
ReplyDeletealso epic title is epic
What is the US attitude to alcohol in children's TV? In the UK there isn't a problem with showing adults drinking moderately (such as a glass of wine with a meal), but from some of the comments here and the reaction to "The punch has been ... Spiked" I get the impression that in the US adults get antsy about the mere mention of alcohol in a children's show. Is that an accurate impression?
ReplyDeleteIt's more like that censors get antsy, not necessarily the adults in America.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I like the fact that American Ciders have very low alcohol. I'm a juice-person to begin with, so it's a win win for me that Ciders over here are just pure flavor, none of the worry that it'd make me drunk.
silly pony's... cider is originally a non alcoholic drink ;)
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely looking forward to the Flim Flam brothers.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, it will definitely be non-alcoholic cider. The vast majority of cider you can get in North America is non-alcoholic. I had no idea cider was considered a strictly alcoholic beverage anywhere. Hard cider isn't really all that popular, here. I'm going to have to look into this.
And remember, if it's tangy and brown, your in cider town. If it's sweet and yellow, you got juice there fella.
@Smokey Treble
ReplyDeletewut

I AM MAGIC I WILL BE RIGHT
Well, this should be interesting.
ReplyDelete@DPV111
ReplyDeleteWhich part is being wutted at?
Yay for more AJ! And the Flim-Flam Brothers; why does that name make me think they're related to the Beagle Boys?
ReplyDeleteJust hearing about this episode makes me thirsty for some applejack, amirite?
ReplyDelete... The drink, not the pony- you sick nuts!
@Emma
ReplyDeleteIt only means that in America and Canada, over here in England and most of the rest of the world 'cider' is just the alcoholic drink. We have no such thing as the non-alchol version last time I checked.
Wait a minute! I thought I heard the next episode was going to be about family gatherings!
ReplyDeleteI guess I was tricked.
Oh well...
This show seems awesome anyways!!! :D
They're probably not talking about hard cider. For one thing, that would make it literally the most boring episode EVER - "Okay. We've squeezed the apples in the first five minutes. We shall now add the yeast and... wait for fermentation"
ReplyDeleteI'm expecting some sort of John Henry allegory. Probably with significantly less death involved.
Goddammit, this better not be a "technology is evil" episode. If this doesn't end with Applejack and the Flim Flams realizing that both of their methods have their merits, I will raze both of their houses myself.
ReplyDeleteI'm predicting some Pinkie with THAT title.
ReplyDeleteMan, I pity anyone who has no access to regular cider.
ReplyDeleteApple cider is leagues better than apple juice.
@Moleman77 so will Applejack maybe get a song in this episode
ReplyDelete@Moleman77 so you think Applejack will finally get her own song
ReplyDeleteMaybe the moral of the story is "faster isn't always better".
ReplyDeleteThe machine works but for some reason the cider doesn't taste good.
(Green Acres::Mr. Hayney / Sweet Apple Acres::Flim and Flam)
In North America, cider isn't alcoholic.
ReplyDeleteJust Sayin'
Also, that title is awesome.
@banjo2E
ReplyDeleteI'm betting the Flim Flams aren't just going to be relying on a technological advantage. If their names are any indication they're going to be con-artists through and through.
@Tom-Massey-Animation
ReplyDeleteHens love Roosters. Geese love Ganders. Everypony else loves Ned Flanders!
>Implying that Faust didn't already confirm that alcohol existed with the FiM universe, it was just considered taboo.
ReplyDeleteGoddamn newfags.
I hope Applejack will get her second song there.
ReplyDelete"Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000" sound like a machine, some kind of steam powered apples press. It'll probably be a John Henry type story.
ReplyDeleteThe episode is about a new-fangled contraption that works amazingly well for the first brother, who sells it to AJ. After using it, AJ grows confident to the point of recklessness in time for the other brother to propose a contest where she can't be beat. Just after putting the farm on the line, the device breaks down. Meanwhile the other brother produces his own '6000 unit and reveals that he's in cahoots with the first brother.
ReplyDelete...also, no magic allowed during the competition! Technology only!
At the very end, Spike will run up to the unstoppable machine and draw back the cloak, where the GREAT and POWERFUL Trixie will be revealed and announce that she planned revenge against the friends of that Unicorn. She would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for that meddling dragon. After pressing a button, she's rocketed into space. The mane cast share a laugh, before Twilight wonders outloud whatever happened to Trixie, and we cut to a view inside the rocket.
Trixie freaks out as she's lost control and realizes that she's on her way to the moon. Outside, we see the rocket smash into a Banana garden, where some moon monkeys, who are basking in the trees leap down, point at the rocket, and laugh.
And she begins to write: "Dear Princess Celestia..."
@MultiBaller
ReplyDeleteAnd then the broken machine explodes, sending the brothers flying off into the stratosphere shouting "Looks like we're blasting off agaaaaaaiiiiinnnn...."
Because if we're doing this thing, we are fucking doing it right.
I recall this cartoon is no longer meant to be seen by kids only, Its now for everyone...adults and kids.
ReplyDeleteDunno why the debate, on "Over a Barrel" episode we saw a drunk-ish pony with salt. We migth see the same with the Cider.
Hard cider = cider with salt?
ReplyDelete@Heartmend i agree. i doubt they would put alcohol in a kids show like MLP. it just doesn't fit the theme.
ReplyDeleteIm gonna go out on a limb, and say because of the name. its gonna be a John Henry type episode, cause BigMac is a strong man...
ReplyDeleteTwo AJ eps in a row?
ReplyDeleteimokaywiththis.jpgx10000
Not hard apple cider(alcahol) just normal apple cider
ReplyDeleteFlim flam.
ReplyDeleteFiMFlamFilosophy.
...There's some kind of conspiracy going on here.
Writer 1: We need to make this show more appealing to bronies, though.
ReplyDeleteWriter 2: I know! We need to get these ponies DRUNK!
predicting the last ten eopisodes(including hearts ad hooves) fill in the gaps, 3 episodes for everypony
ReplyDelete2 twilight sparkle
3 fluttershy (hearts and hooves will probably be dedicated to her)
2 pinkiepie
2 cutie mark crusaders
and the last is a full cast for a finale.
How ironic, if you look at the Wikipedia definition of flimflam, it has book in there that states something about the whimsy of unicorns dragons and other mythical things. Basically in Equestria science is the whimsical stuff of mad ponies
ReplyDeleteif it is a jhon henry based episode big mac is either , gonna die or give up or just be out done
ReplyDeleteBEST LETTER EVER.
ReplyDeleteFlim and flam from Cow and Chicken! =D
ReplyDelete@Jon Wall "Writer 1: We need to make this show more appealing to bronies, though.
ReplyDeleteWriter 2: I know! We need to get these ponies DRUNK!"
Certainly some episodes' plots seem to have been fueled by booze...
