We were all curious about it yesterday, and it looks like they have finally popped up. Hasbro has some "official" names for our favorite background ponies. Obviously due to legal reasons, they couldn't use the fanon ones.
Lyra is above, and Berry Punch/Blues/Carrot Top can be found after the break.
Note: For the sake of not driving fanfiction archives everywhere insane, please keep using the fanon names for those! Or at least include that your "Heartstrings" in the story should be filed under Lyra.

Also, the last two, I'm okay with.
ReplyDelete@ponydoraprancypants
ReplyDeleteThank you, thank you. I'm glad I'm not the only one who understands why they can't and don't use fanon names.
@Multiversity I like the way you think!
ReplyDeleteMaybe, as the show goes on, these ponies will get more lines and air time. They will remain background ponies, but instead of just being there taking up space and keeping Ponyville from looking like a ghost town they will have more presence and everything will feel more lively.
ReplyDeleteThe more cool characters is the merrier :D
Nope, she'll always be Lyra to me. Same for everypony else (yes Carrot Top, you're Lyra too. Everypony is Lyra!). I'm going to keep using the names we gave them, and I hope you all do to.
ReplyDelete@80PercentBrony
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure there's a Big Mac toy included in the set

ReplyDeleteThere's probably some differences in the approval boards between the TV show's staff and the Hasbro toy line. Hasbro itself doesn't seem to have much to do with the show or the commercials/advertising. The fact that they keep using these dumb recolored vectors instead of official show vectors can allude to that. The toys, however, are their field. For instance, while the Hub and Faust acknowledge the names "DJ P0N-3" and "Derpy Hooves", Hasbro would use different names for those characters if there were toys released.
As for the rest, I can understand Hasbro wanting to cover their plots when it comes to using fan-made material on a licensed product. It's a 'better safe than sorry' sort of situation where it's simpler to just avoid even the potential of a lawsuit entirely.
As for the names; I think Lyra Heartstrings sounds great. Noteworthy is a better name than Blues in my opinion, though I certainly wouldn't object to it being a surname all the same. Berryshine is a Unicorn and thus not the same pony as Berry Punch, so no worries there. As for Golden Harvest, I can easily see "Carrot Top" being a nickname given the pony's looks, Cutie Mark, and occupation. So Golden Harvest on her birth certificate, "Carrot Top" to her friends.
Noteworthy Blues is one cool customer, ya dig?
ReplyDeleteAaaaand how does Hasbro naming them change anything? I'm sure the fan base will keep using whatever name they please (go onto TVTropes and look up Fan Nickname, and your welcome for me wasting an hour of your life :P) and if the show crew decide otherwise we're more likely to pick that over everything else. Plus, Heartstrings? Lyra is such a nicer name, damnit! Don't you ruin my favourite Hasbro. It's bad enough you seem to own my entire childhood right now >_>
ReplyDeleteok so time for some GRIMDARK INSANE FAN THEORY!
ReplyDeleteso Berry Shine IS Berry Punch, but in the future. her daughter being a unicorn, along with living in a town with such magically talent unicorns like Twilight left Berry Punch deeply jealous and resentful of Ponies with magical ability, and she craved it herself, she wanted a horn. so one day when Ruby was coming home from Pony High school (remember it's THE FUTURE!) Berry in a fit of drunken rage murdered her own daughter and cut off her horn, she then went to some underground surgeon, specializing in illegal transplant's and had Ruby's horn attached to her head. Knowing that she would be the first suspect she fled Ponyville for Manehattan were she changed her name to Berryshine.
but Berry cold still not use magic, she wasn't truly a unicorn and this sent her into greater and greater despair. Delving ever deeper into Alcoholism she now whores herself out to the dregs of Manehattan just so she can get a little more to drink...
@TGGeko Except it's not canon. Not towards the background ponies we're comparing them to.
ReplyDeleteI PREFER LYRA.
ReplyDelete@Laurence Brown Heh heh, I think I might just do that! Teeen seconds flaaat!
ReplyDeleteWHAT legal reasons?
ReplyDeleteNo copyright has vested because written names alone can't constitute an artistic work!
And to the best of my knowledge, most of these names aren't trademarks owned by another party (I could be wrong here though).
Wow, everyone is kind of freaking out about this. Remember folks, toy packaging has not ever been canon. Heck I have a story book that came with one of the pony gift sets that refers to Luna as Selena, but that is obviously wrong.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry about it. The show writers have the final say in what canon names are.
I'm actually okay with some of these names...
ReplyDeleteI'm even more okay with how quick the fandom acted and added them as last/first names. :D (even Carrot Top can be sort of worked up)
Except for Berry Shine (but our Berry Punch doesn't have a horn so this is obviously another pony :v)
On the one hand, I feel like these are different ponies altogether since they just use recolors of the Mane Six for the artwork (Heartstrings = Lyra colored Twilight, Berryshine = Berry Punch colored Rarity etc.) On the other hand, I do like the names and I wouldn't mind having them paired with their current names (Supporting the name Lyra Heartstrings).
ReplyDeleteThe villagers are restless!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, though, the fandom is grumpy today, huh?
Love and tolerate guys.
@Bakphoon Fun Fact : Hasbro is bad at translating.
ReplyDelete@Celestia
ReplyDeleteI must agree i like our names better
I'll just note that toys aren't canon.
ReplyDeleteUnless of course you think applejack has a pink, apple shaped truck. In which case I have nothing to say to you.
@TheRike42LMAO Best statement of the week.
ReplyDeleteSolution is simple.
ReplyDeleteUse the official names as the surname of the characters.
For example: Lyra Heartstrings, or Carrot Top Golden Harvest.
Sure, some characters will have two middle names, but most real horses have 7-8 words in their names. At least, the registered ones do.
Pass this on.
I don't mind Berryshine and Golden Harvest.
ReplyDelete...but Berryshine is a unicorn. And Carrot Top just had that epic song about her by WoodenToaster.
If it wasn't for those 2 things I would probably use the new names.
Noteworthy is a clever name, the others I'm not so fond of.
ReplyDelete@Kaijyuu
ReplyDeleteof course she does.
it has a button in it that transforms it into THE APPLESMASHER, a 90 foot tall mecha with APPLEGUNS!
@Vabla That is an interesting point, but didn't they use the copyright sign by their name if that is a case.
ReplyDeleteAlso I feel fortunate to be the first to fuse Berryshine Punch name.

ReplyDelete@mrjoshmacintosh
ReplyDelete*facehoof*
Yeah, I noticed that about 5 seconds before I wrote this response.
DIDN'T SEE THE ORIGINAL POST ON THE PAGE BEFORE = I DERP'D!
My bad. Please ignore my ign'ance this time.
I'm more surprised they at least got Carrot Top's image right...
ReplyDeleteOh well one out of four isn't so bad...
Not only is the art lazy, but the 'descriptions' on the cards are also lazy. "Is so helpful" "likes berries" "sings all day" "likes sharing treats" I mean, really?
ReplyDelete@ Vinnyboiler
ReplyDeleteThat's because names generally cannot be copyrighted, that falls under the ambit of trademarks.
Heck no,I can't stand any of these names. They can't even use the real images for the background ponies they just recolor the main six.
ReplyDeleteHa ha. That will never happen.
ReplyDeleteI'm actually not upset about the names until I saw carrot tops, I will probably continue to use the fanon until I have a reason to use the official but GOLDEN HARVEST? that doesn't even sound good XD
ReplyDelete@Mojo
ReplyDeleteKeep that thought and write a transformers crossover. I'd read it.
I like Heartstrings as a last name for Lyra, and maybe Blues Noteworthy, but the rest don't really work.
ReplyDeleteo a serious note the only one I like is Noteworthy cause Blues is just about the most generic name imaginable.
ReplyDeleteI can live this being their last names and or extended names.
ReplyDeleteIs it just me, or do the pictures on their cards look like re-colors of somepony or another else?
ReplyDeleteBoo! Hiss! A lazy attempt to cater to us has failed miserably! Now I have even more reasons to never buy the toys!
ReplyDeleteAnd what everyone else said, too: We'll keep using the fanon names, Hasbro could have used the fanon names and we either wouldn't have cared or we would have loved it, the recolors of the main characters are lame, the molds haven't changed and are still not show-accurate... Need I go on?
@darknesqw said...
ReplyDeleteRemember, it's Lauren Faust and her creative team that brought us the ponies we know and love. Hasbro, on the other hand, has never shown much creativity with their franchises. For the most part, they're content with hawking these toys at their original target audience: little girls ages 5 and up, who they assume couldn't care less about little details like description cards.
Golden Harvest....Golden Harvest? How is that even a name for anything? *sighs* Her name is Carrot Top - deal with it.
ReplyDeleteLyra Heartstrings though gets the thumbs up from me.
Yesh, hot topic we got going tonight. I think it's the attachment we've got to these characters; WE named them, developed them, gave them personalities that they never would have gotten otherwise. I'm not defending some of the more over the top reactions, but I can understand why people are jumping to the defense of the fanon names. I'm enjoying watching the attempts at reconciling the toy names with the fanon ones, and the names Lyra Heartstrings and Noteworthy Blues may just catch on. I'm hoping there will be some tolerance for the few that decide to use these as the characters names in fan art/fics/etc. It's bound to happen.
ReplyDeleteI might be making a mistake commenting on this long list of comments.
ReplyDeleteLyra Heartstrings:
Given name Surname; That works
Berryshine: he he he, booze joke. (Plus it's obviously a different pony)
Blues Noteworthy: ...okay.
Golden "Carrot Top" Harvest: Eh... what the heck. It's a bit better than how they named Daisy. I'll give it that.
Why are we taking this as canon? Even the wiki is doing it!.
ReplyDeleteThe toys mean nothing to the show!
Maybe we should take a cue from the Transformers lineup and remember that Hasbro is sometimes faced with trademark issues for their stuff, and as trademark law is apparently pretty complex, we can probably just let them go with it and use whatever fanon/canon names we want. They're the toy versions, not necessarily the same trademark as in TV.
ReplyDeleteThese names are not used in the show, therefor I vote against using them ever again.
ReplyDeleteThe way I see it, these are new ponies altogether that just look similar to the background ponies we've come to love.
ReplyDeleteFor instance, compare Heartstrings' card vector to Lyra's vector. They are not even remotely close to matching. While the figure itself bears resemblance to Lyra, the vector its based on is too different for me to even think they're supposed to be the same.
So my opinion says that Heartstrings and Lyra are two separate ponies, as are the rest.
Lyra Heartstrings is OK. Can go with that. And in my headcanon she was already more of a singer than a musician so their one-line description even fits. Indifferent to the rest, though Noteworthy Blues scans better. ;-)
ReplyDeleteActually it works if they give Derpy any name they like. Derpy is and always was a descriptive nickname, and not necessarily a kind one, and there was never anything definitively linking her to the offscreen "Ditzy Doo" mentioned in the show. So it can be anything. As long as it's not stupid. So the thing to do is to start reciting online all the stupid names we don't want them to call her so they can't. :-D
I'll kick off with Bubblegum.
Actually, I really like Noteworthy. It's a clever name and escapes the "generic word with Shine or Twinkle stuck on the end" style of name that has been so popular with Hasbro the last few years.
ReplyDeleteBerryshine is more along Hasbro's usual lines.
I'm curious to find out what the other blind bag ponies are named . . .
@Laurence Brown
ReplyDeleteThere's no real reason they can't use fanon names, as shown by their use of DJ P0N-3 and referral to Derpy in interviews and such. However, a lot of the fanon names for background ponies (Colgate, Lyra, etc) would cause legal problems on their own because either they belong to ponies that Hasbro lost copyright on from previous generations or they're actually the brand name of somebody else's product.
And there's always the risk, small as it is, of some crazy fanpony trying to get royalties for a name they "own" that the company eventually used; it seems ridiculous, but it's been attempted in the past by Trek fanboys and it's the reason that legal departments generally forbid workers on any tv show from reading the fanfics or listening to episode ideas coming from fans.
There not bad, but I'm just so used to the ones that we have made. I just hope they never come up with an official name for Dr. Whooves.
ReplyDeleteHeartstrings sounds like a terminal cardiac disorder :(
ReplyDelete@ultrarare
ReplyDeleteWiki edit war incoming! EVERYPONY TAKE COVER!
@Kaijyuu
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeSb96JO72Q
I'm ok with Golden Harvest and Noteworthy, never got hooked on the fanon name anyway. I wish Berryshine looked a little more...like the TV Berry Punch, so I'm probably gonna keep them separate.
ReplyDeleteHeartstrings on the other hand...That one will be the tough one. I think I'll be able to adjust to Heartstrings enough though.
Who's going to sue? We'll probably just sue for them changing the fan names. It's like reverse psychology. Rather than keeping the names that everyone likes they'll alter them in fears that we'll be mad that they're using the names that we like.
ReplyDeleteWhy is Hasbro trying to ruin MLP for us?
ReplyDeletethey are ok expt "golden harvest" but as far as I care they are not lyra, carrot top, berrypunch, and blues but their cousins
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter what some card says, it's who they are in our hearts that matters! can I get a neighmen !?
ReplyDeleteTo everyone saying the names "should" be this or "should" be that.
ReplyDelete1) Toys aren't canon.
2) Neither is fanon, obviously.
Conclusion: Use whatever the hell name you want. If you don't like the new names, you don't have to accept them. If you do, go ahead and use them. Until names show up in the cartoon proper, nothing is any more "right" or "wrong" than anything else.
Lyra Heartstring
ReplyDeleteBerry Punch or his sober name: Berry Shine
Blues Noteworthy
Carrot Golden Harvest Top (kinda fancy)
Keep in mind Hasbro is a huge company. My understanding, from past Pony Fairs, is that they have a department specifically devoted to naming toys (and making sure there's no copyright/trademark clashes.) I seriously doubt anyone in that department had ever heard of "Lyra", but if they had . . . they most certainly would not have used it.
ReplyDeleteHasbro won't even LOOK at fan-ideas, to avoid lawsuits. I once sent them a letter where I suggested they make black ponies--"you could make them black with pink hair, that's plenty girly", I said. That is a pretty generic suggestion, right? Just "hey, these two colors look good together." Well, it never reached the MLP department. I got a letter back from their customer service people saying "WE DON'T ACCEPT OUTSIDE IDEAS", etc etc.
So you can imagine how they'd react to someone on "the outside" suggesting a specific name.
As far as the show goes, I think they have a lot more leeway. But not the toy-part of Hasbro.
From skimming through the comments I can give an estimated guess on what the resolution of this conflict of character names will be:
ReplyDeleteHearstrings: Lyra's last name
Berryshine: Berry Punch's unicorn relative
Noteworthy: Blues's last name
Golden Harvest: Carrot Top's mentally challenged twin
Honestly, it seems like the toy department put pretty much no effort into these AT ALL (recolors and 3 word descriptions?)! Then again, these are meant for little girls.
Glad I don't care for any of these characters.
ReplyDeleteAll I see is a Twilight, Rarity, Big Mac, and Pinkie Pie recolor though.
The one I'm worried about is Vinyl Scratch and Derpy if they ever become a toy.
NO!
ReplyDelete@Questionmarktarius
ReplyDeleteO.o Yes. This must happen. We already have instances of Ninja Derpy, we need Kung-Fu Master Carrot Top.
sad day
ReplyDeletesad day
ReplyDeleteLyra Heartstring
ReplyDeleteBerry Punch or his sober name: Berry Shine
Blues Noteworthy
Carrot Golden Harvest Top (kinda fancy)
If they EVER make a Derpy toy...THEY'D BETTER KEEP THE NAME.
ReplyDelete@RadicalEdward2, Jv9ufxcy
ReplyDeleteY'all are just trolling right?
Please Celestia let them just be trolling...
@ThyPony
ReplyDeleteYou've never heard the expression "tugging at one's heartstrings?" As in, something very emotionally powerful? I think it's beautiful, and I'm going with Lyra Heartstrings henceforth!
Heartstrings...? FUCK THAT SHIT.
ReplyDeleteSo... I guess this is how the MLP toy world works:
ReplyDeleteLyra = Heartstrings, Twilight recolor
Berry Punch = Berry Shine, Rarity recolor
Blues = Noteworthy, Big Mac recolor
Carrot Top = Golden Harvest, Pinkie recolor
In the show, they're not recolors at all. So yeah. Definitely not using these names as any sort of canon whatsoever. I'm sticking with the fan names. Obviously the toys can't be considered canon if they can't match the damn look of the ponies from the show. Hasbro just doesn't care that much about their shitty products.
... Heartstrings is cute for Lyra's last name, though~ That's about all I'll ever use it for. "Noteworthy" is also a cute name, but I'll stick to Blues.
Golden Havest uh let's just keep Carrot Top.
ReplyDeleteHeartstrings uh why can;t we keep Lyra.
Next that want us to rename Dr. Whooves.
@HiccupFlux
ReplyDeleteWhy? If you don't like these names, there's absolutely no reason you should use them.
Berryshine and Noteworthy are keepers for me.
ReplyDeleteI'll stick to Carrot Top and Lyra though.
I swear, if they F up Vinyl Scratch though, there will be WAR!
Heartstrings and Noteworthy are pretty cool, I'd be fine if we started using them. Golden Harvest just doesn't roll off the tongue well though...
ReplyDeleteI agree with what other have said. These names are no more canon than the fan-named characters.
ReplyDeleteI just hope that the fanfics don't start adopting these names...
@Bastoff
ReplyDeleteBut Blues Noteworthy sounds totally badass!
These aren't the background ponies from the show. These are just recolor ponies who happen to look kinda like them. Show > Fanon > Toys.
ReplyDeleteAlthough Berry Punch's full name is *totally* Berryshine Elizabeth Punch.
So....does this mean that when they do have a bluish-grey, yellow-maned, amber-eyed recolor of either Rainbow Dash or Fluttershy, they'll look at the bubbles on her flank and call her 'Bubbly Delight' or the like? It's not as if they can call her Derpy or Ditzy without stepping on toes so Legal has to take that sort of thing into consideration.
ReplyDelete@Tundra
ReplyDeleteI sent an email to Seth proposing this idea a while ago. I got a reply back, and made my case. Since his last reply was "Yep!" I assume he'll be posting this up somewhere soon as a helpful suggestion.
Great minds think alike! Sure, Carrot Top Golden Harvest might seem weird, but some people just have two middle names. And most registered horses have seven or eight words in their names.
I don't get why the couldn't use the fannon names, except for derpy maybe.
ReplyDeleteThe new names sound like they first had the fannon names in mind and then they had to change them because the fannon started to use them.
-----
"Lyra Heartstrings" sounds good .p
"Blues noteworthy" is good too... I guess they could be their lastnames in fannon.
After skimming through these comments I can estimate what the resolutions to these name conflicts will most likely be:
ReplyDeleteHeatstrings: Lyra's last name
Berryshine: Berry Punch's relative
Noteworthy: Blues's last name
Golden Harvest: Carrot Top's mentally challenged twin
Honestly though, it seems like there was no effort put in from the toy department AT ALL (recolors and 3 word descriptions?)! Then again, these are meant for little girls...
Aw these names are lame. I like the fan ones better.
ReplyDeleteAll of my nope.
ReplyDeleteSo they used the same models as Pinkie Pie, Rarity, and Big Mac. Then only gave them one phrase of information on the card---just in several languages...

ReplyDeleteoh man this just gave me a great idea
ReplyDeleteI'm okay with this! :P
ReplyDeleteWe haven't lost our background ponies' fanon names today. We have won last names and nicknames for them! xD
Lyra Heartstrings.
Blues Noteworthy.
Berryshine "Berry" Punch, errr, the unicorn.
Golden "Carrot Top" Harvest. Nopony uses her real name because she hates it...
Okay, maybe Hasbro's name for Carrot Top will be the most ignored in fanon. :P
It's just the same thing that I do about Derpy's name. I usually call her Derpy, but I think of her real name as: Ditzy "Derpy Hooves" Doo. XD
@mattwhite924
ReplyDeleteo_o A-are you serious? Dude, I so need to see that! XD
My name's Celena, and I always liked Luna in a sense because both the sisters' names sort of reminded me of my sister (who's name is Celeste...) and I's (in relation to the moon).. Sure Selena is sure as hell not canon, but a goofup like that alone would make my day xD
(sorry if off-topic)
That isn't Lyra. It isn't even recolored right in the image. The toy, that's okay, but the image doesn't match. Obviously that's just a common cutie mark and this pony isn't Lyra at all.
ReplyDeleteAnd that's not Berry Punch, but you guys all noticed why.
Anyway, these ponies don't look like the background ponies on the show. Therefore, they aren't the ponies from the show. Just stick with the fanon names, okay? Okay! Although I like Heartstrings as Lyra's last name too, I can't in good conscience think of it as such because... well, LOOK! That isn't Lyra!
@Eddie Perkins Thank you. I feel better now.
ReplyDelete*waves hand*
These are not the background ponies you are looking for, move along.
@Autumn Oak
ReplyDeleteAnd eventually:
Bubbly Delight..who is probably going to be described as having grown to tolerate the nickname 'Derpy' but not especially like it.
uhg, i wish they were never named...
ReplyDeletemaybe if they were officially named awhile ago it would be easier but lyra is so rooted into my heart that i dont think i can get rid of it
@Octavia
ReplyDeleteThis post is correct. You guys should read this post.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure all of us are still going to use the fanon names. They're better, and there's a dozen reasons by toy names aren't canon. So if these names pop up in the actual cartoon (which they won't), then you can throw a fit.
Before you start complaining more about the names: You'll get used to them. The exact same situation here happened when the English names for the Generation 5 Pokemon were revealed, people complained because Snivy wasn't called "Smugleaf" like the fans called it, and don't get me started on "Oshawott", they got used to the new names eventually, and you will probably get used to them as well, it will just take some time to adapt to them, that's all.
ReplyDelete@marioandsonic
ReplyDeleteTotally agreeing here. These aren't the Berry Punch and Lyra and co we know. They're recolors of the main six (note Berryshine's use of Rarity's unique hair). But all the same...could have been worse. Just wish they didn't...well they gave them such..80s MLP names.
Sees the "heartstrings"... "It was as if a million bronies cried out in terror and where then silenced"
ReplyDeleteOh look, Lyra changed her hairstyle and her name! LAWL!
ReplyDeleteIf I were to state that the show runners probably had little-to-nothing to do with these, would the rest of you be inclined to agree with me?
Reading the comments here, I don't think you guys fully understand what the "copyright reasons" here are, or mean.
ReplyDeleteTypically from a legal standpoint, it is usually this:
Show Creators usually cannot, in any way, accept fan submissions, or fan-made ideas, such as anything included in fan-works or fan-made concepts, becuase of the definate possibility of being influenced by them.
This is becuase it's entirely possible for a specific fan to pop up and (or at least make a claim) and take Hasbro to court over the concept that "I came up with this name, and you used it, therefore I deserve royalities for my hand in the creative process"
This is also why, if you notice, why Derpy Hooves has not actually had this name ever said on the show, itself.
Even if the animators and writers and storyboard artists may affectiontly refer to her as "Derpy" themselves, (and accidentally left it in Storyboards or filenames in flash programs that weren't meant to be found), it's entirely unlikely you'll ever hear anyone ever in the show itself, say the name "Derpy".
Usually when show writers for other projects have been interviewed in the past, they have specifically said this is why they are not legally allowed to read fanfics, or officially acknolwedge them, becuase of the danger or being influenced for something that a fan can knlowingly take Hasbro to court over, even if it is a meritless claim, simply due to the expenses of going to court for any reason, even if it appears to be an open-and-shut case.
So, the reason we cannot have fanon names be official, is becuase it only takes one fan to take it upon themselves to present evidence of a message board or forum posting of some kind and claim they deserve royalities, and it is basically legal protetction and being careful on Hasbro's end.
@mattwhite924
ReplyDeleteWow, everyone is kind of freaking out about this. Remember folks, toy packaging has not ever been canon. Heck I have a story book that came with one of the pony gift sets that refers to Luna as Selena, but that is obviously wrong. Don't worry about it. The show writers have the final say in what canon names are.
Here here! Well said.
... Selena? REALLY?
I refuse to call Lyra Heartstrings >:1
ReplyDeleteBut Golden Harvest is a Chinese Film Company!!!
ReplyDeletewhy do you guys care honestly?
ReplyDeletethis is irrelevent in the end we'll call them what we want and none of it will be canon to the show.
you could call Lyra "TrippytripYogimcbeary" and it would be just as canon as Lyra or Heartstrings.
We still call Derpy, Ditzy so Lyra and Carrot top are safe.
ReplyDeleteThey picked up on recolouring them, but didn't use fanon names? Ah well, that won't stop us.
ReplyDeleteHeartstrings = Lyra-colored Twilight
ReplyDeleteLyra is still Lyra guys! :D
These names are interesting, but this discussion is the most interesting damn thing I've seen all day.
ReplyDeleteI don't think these names should be taken too seriously. The toy line isn't exactly that accurate to the show.Plus the staff of FIM calls "Golden Harvest" Carrot Top.I think that we should be going by what the people who actually work on the show say instead of Hasbro's toy line.I'd also be ok with Lyra's name being changed to Lyra Heartstrings.
ReplyDelete@Masterge77
ReplyDeleteSpeaking as a Pokemon fan, I can say that I absolutely loved the name Snivy and never minded Oshawott. Sure, I found Smugleaf entertaining, but Snivy was better.
I don't mind the new names on their own. It's just that these ponies clearly aren't the same ones we're thinking of. If they're supposed to be, then it's incredibly lazy art for the tags. They couldn't even bother to remove the horn on the recolored Rarity or get the right body color for the recolored Twilight. So why should we use these names when it's clear no one really cared while making these?
Lyra Heartstrigns?
ReplyDeleteBlues Notewhorthy?
Yeah,I approve them.
I'm a real ale nerd. I think I drank Golden Harvest at one point. IPA, quite nice but a bit light on the hops for my tastes.
ReplyDelete@WoodenToaster
ReplyDeleteAh, where's Living Tombstone when you need him? ...I'll be in my corner.
This is a really entertaining discussion. Just putting that out there.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, I know people have said it before, but I am in favor of merging the names together. Lyra Heartstrings, Berryshine "Berry" Punch, and Noteworthy Blues all work fine for me.
But thats not Blues...
ReplyDeleteNoteworthy is actually way better than Blues
ReplyDeleteKeeping the fanon names doesn't have to clash with these names. After all, some of the fan names are a bit awkward in that they reference the cutie marks, which no pony would have had when he/she was named at birth. So we can treat these names as the "proper names" of the ponies, versus their common name (Maxwell vs Max, Johnathan vs John, Jessica vs Jess). Or at least that's good enough for me.
ReplyDelete@Cel Phone
ReplyDeleteThis site has a scan of the book where Luna is called Selena.
Right hand page, about halfway down.
http://www.mylittleponynews.com/2010/11/friendship-is-magic-storybook-scans.html
Lyra might be her first name?
ReplyDeleteEh?
Lyra heartstrings?
I can actually live with this, a couple of people said above me:
ReplyDeleteLyra Heartstrings
Berry "Shine" Punch
Noteworthy (umm....) Noteworthy
I can live with those names^^
But Carrot Top I got nothin..
This is a crime against nature and you know what means
ReplyDeleteMess with nature = A good old fashion flank woopin pin from fluttershy
Ps I could grow on Lyra Heartstrings
I really like her...mane?
ReplyDeleteI'm just kidding, but let's face it. It could be worse! Although I think Golden Harvest and Noteworthy are PUSHING IT. Either way, we're probably just going to continue using our fanon names anyway. Still cool though!
Legal reasons? such as...
ReplyDelete@Jv9ufxcyThey're not. You're ruining it for yourself by taking something that has nothing to do with the show seriously and as canon.
ReplyDeleteWhy are people complaining that the blind bags look like the mane six? They have been doing it since the first wave!
ReplyDeleteWe have a Cheerilee that looks like an Applejack, and despite Lily Blossom, Daisy Dreams and Rainbow Flash having their own art on their brushable toy boxes they look like Rainbow Dash, Apllejack and Rarity.
And of course there is Fluttershy as Rainbow Dash.
And to me Heartstrings is kinda cute, but you have to remember copyright. Maybe there is another toy named Lyra and they can't use it. But then again have Hasbro heard of the fanon names in the first place?
Well, I have to say that this is dissapointing. I mean don't get me wrong, the fact that they have toys are GREAT! BUT Heartstrings? Really? I KNOW they could NEVER have used the fanon names, because, well, a good chunk of us are adults! Input from adults fans for a kids show would mean that Fluttershy would be John Rambo, The Transformers MUST crossover, and every background pony gets their own episode. Sadly, I can understand that they have to seperate the fanon from the canon, but at LEAST they acknowledge the fanon in subtle ways in the show! Either way, Berry Punch's name ain't that bad, and I've always tried to acknowledge both the fanon and canon (I say that Derpy is Ditzy Doo's nickname). And as for Carrot Top/Cake (I prefer Top), I always felt that her name was a bit iffy/generic. IMO, if Golden Harvest is her, "OFFICIAL" name, then to me, she's Goldie!
ReplyDeleteWe have ignored toy names before (Flower Wishes anyone?) why stop now?
ReplyDeleteI think hasbro wants to troll us.
ReplyDeleteI mean really "Golden Harvest" To me screams "U MAD"
@applebeams
ReplyDeleteWe're not bitching about it being canon or not; we're bitching because Hasbro doesn't want to make show-accurato toys, even being possible.
"Heartstrings" is a pretty good name for a pony.
ReplyDeleteJust... not... THAT pony.
I'll say this again though I doubt anyone will read it. Since people seem to be taking these seriously.
ReplyDeleteTHE NAMES OF THESE PONIES HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SHOW OR ANY CHARACTERS INVOLVED.
THEY ARE NOT EVEN SUPPOSED TO BE THE MENTIONED PONIES.
THE NAMES ARE AS CANON AS PINKLESTIA AND APPLEJACK'S TRUCK.
Berry Punch is an earth pony isn't she?
ReplyDeleteBut...that name implies it's the same....
ONORE HASBRO, YOU drive PONIES to drink!
These names are rather irrelevant to me, coming from Hasbro's toy division (the same people who did pink Celestia btw) which we know to be segregated from those who make the actual show we all love.
ReplyDeleteAlso, simple recolours = lazyness, even the kids could see that.
This is pretty cool. Don't try to over think this, it's cool that background characters get recognized and are given names by Hasbro. Not saying they're better names though, I do prefer the fanon names for sake that we gave life to them.
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one who thinks Hasbro's toy division just using lazy mane six recolors is a good thing? Means we can just regard them as different ponies from the background characters we know and love and continue to go about our business.
ReplyDeleteI do really like "Lyra Heartstrings" and "Noteworthy Blues", though.
I'd just like to specify that it's great that these characters are given their own toy, albeit they are merely recolours.
ReplyDeleteI like Lyra Heartstrings and Blues Noteworthy as names. Golden Harvest Carrot I'm mulling over. Berryshine? Too many jokes come to mind...
ReplyDeleteFanon wins here - those blindbags look NOTHING like the Lyra, Berry Punch, Blues, and Carrot-Top from the show, aside of color and mark - the manes and tails are completely wrong.
ReplyDeleteAnd Berry Punch isn't a unicorn!
@Mojo
ReplyDeleteActually, I call her Raymond Luxury-Yacht, though it's pronounced "Throatwobbler Mangrove".
I can't really consider that Lyra until she stops looking like Twilight anyway. XD The toys and art being recolors, I'd say fanon is more canon than they are.
ReplyDeleteThey're still Carrot Top, Lyra, Berry Punch and Blues to me.
ReplyDeleteUmm... What are Blindbags anyway? Well, regardless, I'll be using these names from now on.
ReplyDeleteLet's imagine there are two Hasbros. A "Good" Hasbro and a "Bad" Hasbro.
ReplyDeleteGood Hasbro invests more money to create higher quality toys that cost more(with Fanon names) for Bronies as well as lower quality cheaper toys. Bad Hasbro spends the least money possible to make low quality cheap toys.
Which company makes more money in the end?
The names they gave them are kinda bad... :/
ReplyDeleteHeartstrings is a good last name for Lyra, and same for Noteworthy and Blues.
ReplyDeleteCarrot Top is still Carrot Top though.
Berry Shine I might accept.
I will never use the canon names. Ever.
ReplyDeleteI actually think Heartstrings is a better name than Lyra. *is shot*
ReplyDeleteOK, we've had an actual intellectual property lawyer explain why Hasbro would never risk using the fanon names, and yet every dozen comments or so we have someone asking why Hasbro didn't just use the fanon names. How many people are bothering to read the comments before posting their own?
ReplyDeleteAlso, if you're waiting for Hasbro to create new molds to produce show-accurate toys of background ponies, you've got a long wait ahead of you.
Also also, if you hate the toys' names, don't get too worked up about it. The most that will change in the fandom is you might see occasional references to 'Lyra Heartstrings' or 'Blues Noteworthy' or 'Berryshine Elizabeth Punch', and even less will change in the show. Calling it a crime against nature or saying that Hasbro is trying to ruin MLP just makes you look, well, silly.
Looks like the horesapplestorm that was predicted for the Luna episode just got delayed by a week and a half...
Golden Harvest?
ReplyDeletehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Harvest
CARROT TOP KNOWS KUNG FU.
Only one i agree with: Noteworthy.
ReplyDelete@jodyjm13
ReplyDeleteI like it!
Fuck no i'm not going with any of these!
ReplyDeleteFor the people who think Heartstrings and Noteworthy are bad names, I look forward to seeing your faces when Hasbro names Dr. Whooves "Romperooni" or something.
ReplyDeleteYou want to know some names Hasbro has used in the not-very-distant past? Lovey Dovey, Glitter Glide, Goodie Goodie, Pretty Powder, Bashful Bonnet, Sneezy Sniffles, and of course Tink-a-Tink-a-Too. And the people who came up with those names are undoubtedly still working at Hasbro.
So give Hasbro some props . . . at least Heartstrings and Noteworthy are real words, not something cobbled together like "Silly Sunshine" or nonsensical like "Doseydotes."
Eh, I'll consider using the "official" names as soon as they show up in an episode, and not a moment sooner. XP
ReplyDeleteAlso I can't help but find the minute descriptions each pony has (in like 12 languages each!) absolutely hilarious.
thats pretty darn cool, makes me want em no matter what. I love the fanon names, but official stuff is fine, not that I'd use those names anyway xD
ReplyDeleteThe pics on the cards are just pinkie, twilight, rarity, and big mac recolored, those names, the burn my eyes--will need therapy,Luna lover
ReplyDeleteonly a matter of time till we get a ditzy doo!
ReplyDeleteHahaha, oh, Hasbro, you're so funny. Wait. Wait, you're serious? I reject the canon and accept the fanon!
ReplyDelete@ladymoondancer
ReplyDeleteActually, I think "Doseydotes" is pretty clever and cute, though it references something about 60 years older than the target audience.
Lol at the fact they just recolored some of the mane cast and just did editing. LYRA forever!
ReplyDeleteYeah. I like the idea of "Lyra Heartstrings" , and I think Noteworthy is a cool name, but that's Carrot Top. Who's this "Golden Harvest"?
ReplyDeleteYeah, no.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I did find the ungodly lazy recolors on the cards to be quite hilarious.
This is funny because these "official" names mean absolutely nothing.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason, the name "Heartstrings" makes me think of Lyra as a bard.
ReplyDelete@ladymoondancer
ReplyDelete>implying that Tink-a-Tink-a-Too is not the greatest name for anything ever in the history of everything.
I actually dont mind Heartstrings, I mean we have to admit its a MLP show, so the names will likely be girly like that. And I agree with JodyJims 13, Lyra Heartstrings would be epic. The others are fine, golden harvest is the only one I have issue with.
ReplyDeleteAnd legal issues...eh I don't think so. Pon3 is now canon...and no one can really claim the original idea for the name anyway. Not like the fans would. Or Pon3's name creator would be suing the ass out of Hasbro right now.
Who knows, but if they legally cant take the names, which would be an issue with Pon3, I must say they worked hard to make the names acceptable to the fans ^^.
I, for one, vote for Lyra's canon name to be Strum Awesomeposture.
ReplyDeleteYou have to be an ancient brony to get that reference without the link, so I gave it!
I'm not counting these names as they may have the same cutie mark but they do not look the right way. A true Lyra would have a Twillight body woth Dash's hair.
ReplyDeleteLet me make a prediction here... We're all going to call them the same names we do now (with some using the new ones as a surname, which might be nice if you need to sound formal in a fic or something), Hasbro's going to continue to cover their flank for the reasons already explained way too many times above, Studio B's going to continue to do their thing, and we're all going to buy them anyways. In the end, we're about where we started, but with more blind-bags, and an annoying edit war that most of us will probably ignore (I'd personally give the show names preference, since they're the more widely adapted ones). Anyone who's protesting just means less of a crowd between me and my Lyra.
ReplyDeleteI still can't get over how Noteworthy's description consists of the words "is so helpful."
ReplyDeleteGiven that the toys look nothing like the characters we're assuming they're based off of (or the pics in the book, for that matter), I'm going to go with the assumption that they are, in fact, not the ponies we're assuming they're based off of. As such Lyra is still Lyra, Berry Punch is still Berry Punch, Carrot Top is still Carrot top, etc... All they are are cheap recolors of the mane 6. Therefore, not the same ponies. Everyone knows a Lyra pony toy would be standing on its hindlegs anyway :P
ReplyDeleteWon't really fully accept these names until mentioned in the show, otherwise I'll accept them whole heartedly.
ReplyDeleteDont like the official names..not at all..
ReplyDeletebut...but...WHYYYYYY?!?!?!!?!?
ReplyDeleteThe way I see this, is that it's not Lyra and Berry and Carrot Top. They're just ponies that have the same Cutie Marks as them.
ReplyDeleteEverybody just call them whatever you want. Nobody is stopping you.
ReplyDeleteI rather like Heartstrings though . . .
Golden Harvest?
ReplyDelete...Seriously?
as usual the fandom overeacts to meaningless things.
ReplyDeletethanks for never failing to disappoint me EQD community!
Berry Punch is still Berry Punch. That model has a horn! Golden Harvest? No. Just no. Heartstrings? Eh, no where as good as Lyra. Noteworthy? I like it. Maybe better then Blues.
ReplyDeleteConclusion? This isn't show canon unless said in show, the people who work on the show wouldn't give them names anyway, knowing that there are fan names for them, and wouldn't change that. They can't use fan names either. Plus the toys aren't related to the show to much. These toys? Called by their names, the background characters in the show, nameless, but have fanon names.
These sound fine to me.
ReplyDeleteThe names are whatever.
ReplyDeleteBerry Shine looks like Purple Rarity. WTF.
AND BEHOLD, FELLOW BRONIES, A GREAT SUNDERING HATH SHAKEN THE STRONG FOUNDATIONS OF BRONISM. CONFUSION RUNS RAMPANT, AND EVERYONE FEARS FOR THE FUTURE.
ReplyDeleteMeh, Hasbro being cheap with recolours.
Noteworthy sounds badass though.
The others... eh, not so much. Damn you, fandom, making me use fanon names.
Until they are used in the show, I think I'll stick with the fan dubbed names, unless there is a unifying agreement to swap. Either way, I'm neutral.
@SketchyDee
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words, but I can't take credit for coming up with "Lyra Heartstrings"; l33tsaber was the first to combine the two names here, though I suspect it would've been done inevitably.
As for using the name DJ P0n-3 in the 'Equestria Girls' promo, there's a difference between using a fan-created name in a parody and using one in a toy you're selling for profit, as pointed out by our friendly neighborhood intellectual property lawyer.
Nice to know the wikia will remain as laughably run as ever.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, the show is the end all as far as I'm concerned. And as long as the show keeps them unnamed, gonna go with fanon. Plus, the freaking art doesn't even look like the background ponies they allegedly are.
We didn't need a shit storm over this, but we got one so eh.
Lyra Heartstrings does sound nice though.
Also for those citing legal issues and saying Hasbro nor any company will NEVER use fanon names.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AscendedFanon?from=Main.ptitlekzrxgx4f
An entire page dedicated to fanon becoming canon and while some can be chalked up to coicidences (fuck this word), others you can't deny.
Want an example? Mortal Kombat has loads of fanon names for characters becoming canon. Heck, Noob Saibot's backstory was taken from a fan suggestion.
At the end of the day though, its Hasbro's call. They will do what they want and name them whatever. If they truly fear some self-entitled fan that much, they won't. If they think they can trust us to not waste their time in a bogus court case, they won't worry and just use the name like DJ-Pon3 and Derpy.
Also someone brought up a Star Trek fan suing. Anyone mind bringing the case up?
These are not the ponies in the show. Therefore that is not Lyra. That is not Carrot Top. That is not Berry Punch. I don't know the 4th guy. Those are all different models and as such I will not recognize them as being the canonical names for the ponies they are trying to represent.
ReplyDelete@CynicalMuse Wow, they put minimal effort into those designs used on the cards. Simple recoloring of Twilight, Rarity, and Pinkie.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe for a second people will pick up these names unless they are used specifically in the the show.
ReplyDeleteIt's too bad that the people running the wiki are too much of butthurt elitists to realize the toy line means diddly.
THE SHOW IS THE ULTIMATE JUDGE!
seriously why are you people taking this so seriously?
ReplyDeletethis has no effect on the show, it has no effect on fanworks, it doesn't even really have an effect on what we call these ponies.
you guys are making an issue out of nothing.
@Darkdrium
ReplyDeleteTabarnak de Crisse, ça serait trop beau! But we can only be raped on Ebay...
Beside, it's now their COMPLETE names.
Lyra Heartstring
Noteworthy Blues
Berryshine A.K.A Berrypunch
Golden Harvest (but her friends call her "Carrot top")
It will be so for the rest. That's no problem at all.
Can we sue Hasbro for defamation of character? (Of course not, nor am I suggesting such; I just wanted to make the pun.)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, MLP Wikia's "no in-universe POV" policy was annoying enough, this just takes the cake. So out the window that whole site goes.
Eeeeeeeeeh. I'm iffy about these. But at least we sort of have background character dolls now.
ReplyDeleteThey'll still always be the names we gave them to us. These are just the names they have to use for public appearances :B.
I honestly think someone should make a new MLP wiki considering the ineptitude of the staff at the MLP wikia to accept compromises instead of "one choice and ONLY one choice".
ReplyDeleteAlso, does Transformers also use cheap recolors?
Wait a second...that's not Berry Shine isn't replacing Berry Punch! Berry Punch is an earth pony, and Shine up there is a unicorn. Cousins maybe? Anyway, problem solved. Lyra Heartstrings is good, Noteworthy Blues too. Never replace the first names. Anyway, no one will ever call Carrot Top Golden Harvest. See y'all.
ReplyDeleteI plead to whoever came up with fanon names, to gather evidence that it is them the intellectual owner of the name, and then call Hasbro and give them legal permission to use them.
ReplyDeleteCould that work?
Wow. I used ineptitude so wrong. I should go to bed soon.
ReplyDeleteHopefully this place calms down soon.
