• Discussion: What do YOU Want to See in Pony Merchandise?

We have a whole mess of FiM merch out there, but aside from the new Lyra, Carrot Top, and Big Mac blindbags, nothing has really been specifically for our little unexpected demographic.

What kind of merch do you want to see pumped out in the 2012 My Little Pony toyline?

Do you want a line of villians from the show?

    More background ponies?

Hit up the comments below and toss your two cents out!

    1. *Show accuracy. Transformers Prime toys look excellent from the previews we have seen of them, and they have to account for the complicated transformations!
*Video game(s) would be cool, with a none-crappy PC port preferably. Or better yet, make it PC first and just port to the consoles!
      *DVD set.

    4. Full Bodied Officially Licensed Fursuits. Specifically of Applejack and Rarity.

Jk, but I'd be willing to by a soundtrack CD, and that's quite a feat to get ME to buy music. Also, a Rarity plushie/beanie baby would be nothing short of amazing.

    25. The standard figures, but more show accurate looking. Plus with more variety, i.e. some background pony figures. Even if they have to fudge the names a bit on all of them, as long as they don't actually have to say the names in the show, it doesn't really matter.

      I think they could be making significantly more profits with their merchandise. Although I guess I don't really know how much they already making... Anyways, my logic is as follows;
      1) More show-accuracy means that significantly more bronies might be more willing to actually buy the toys, and the "standard customers" will just get slightly better looking toys, which may influence them to get more.
2)Background pony toys just mean that there's a larger variety. Collectors have more to buy, Bronies would eat them up, (I'll admit that I'd buy a derpy with derped eyes in a heartbeat, and I know Vinyl Scratch and several others would sell well.) and going back to the "standard buyers," they just have more toys to buy. Chances are they probably buy the toys based more on looks, and less on the show, so having a larger variety means a higher chance of them finding toys they like the looks of, perhaps several. Also, villains would probably be a nice touch too. At the very least NmM and Discord would make a nice addition to many desks around the world.

I think we're large enough at this point that we can't be ignored. This might be a good way to make some more profit off of us, without having to alienate the target demographic, which is undoubtedly still much much larger than us.

I also believe they should try hosting the episodes online themselves outside of their site, which frankly virtually nobody uses anyways due to the availability online. I thinking they should just get an official YouTube channel and actually post the episodes themselves. Being an actual company probably means that they can very easily set up one of those premium accounts and just put ads where they would normally go in the episodes and still actually turn a profit. I know that some random YouTubers make a living off their shows, and some other companies have done this too, so there must be at least some backing for this idea. I'm pretty sure that if they did that, most if not all of the people with episodes currently up would be willing to take them down. A lot of fans don't have access to the hub, so this might be a way to get at least some profit off of those people, providing that they get the episode up by the end of the day that the actual episode airs.

So to sum up basically everything I said:
      MAKE CELESTIA WHITE GODAMMIT.

    32. I agree with all 100 people above who mentioned the word "plushie" at least once in their comment.

    33. Just adding to the choir but:

      Quality plushies
      -Show accurate- (1000x this) toys/memorabilia
      Full season(s) on DVD/Bluray

Also, I can't be the only one totally creeped out by many of the toys they've made so far. It's almost as if they don't actually know how to market for a massively popular show and are instead shoveling out anything and everything they can think of up to and including ideas from past generations.

I mean come on, if you wanted a vehicle make one of the many carts from the show. Still don't get how they made some of this crap but not Celestia / Luna chariot(s).

      ReplyDelete
    38. Inafter Excessively high-end plushies and such only upper scale toy stores sell I'm sure. lol

I've stated Hasbro isn't a luxury toy company so many times I'm not even gonna bother anymore. lol I always say that and then I always do. Like I'm about to now I'm sure. :/ But yeah, the toys made by Hasbro are only going to get so good for quality probably. And keep in mind, like I've also said, it costs A LOT of money to put out new toys. And if they don't think their main audience, the kids, are going to want to buy them, they aren't going to make them. Etc, etc, all that fun stuff.

As for what I'd like to see. Sure, I'd love to see more "Show accurate" toys and plushies. Really nicely made ones, of course. But I also know that's not Hasbro's market or what they as a toy company produce typically. And it's unlikely they're going to buy new equipment or out source to other places to make it happen.

But we'll see. Like I said, if the kids aren't going to buy them, they aren't likely to be made. There have been some small exceptions in the past for things Hasbro has made I believe, but it seems rare. I like some of the stuff out now and I'm content for the most part. I'm not going to be overly greedy or picky. Some other nice stuff would be good, but I know how hard it is and how costly it is. I'm not going to hate them if they don't cater to my every desire, com'on. They're a toy company and they're prime goal is to make money. And if they think they may not recoup losses enough to turn a good profit, then they're not going to take the risk. And I can't say I blame them, I wouldn't either.

So in summary, yes, some "nicer" toys would be welcomed by me. Molded pony figures that look close to the show models. More accurate plushies, etc. But I'm not going to be bitter or angry if they don't come about either.

    51. I read around the comments and I agree with almost everypony on what we all want around:

-show accurate ponies (including Celestia, Luna, secondary and background ponies, and give Fluttershy HER OWN BUCKIN' MOLD)
-plushies (the "show accurate" part is axiomatic)
-more plastic less brushable hair (NO recolors)
-QUALITY (Hasbro should demand the same amount of effort from the MLP team than they demand from the TF team)
-posters (because there's a lack of pony on my wall)
      -comics
-antagonists!!! (Nightmare Moon and Discord need more love, also Trixie and Gilda, if they fit on this category)
      ... and finally...
-DVD/BluRay with extras (maybe by the time they release 2nd season DVDs, they might put the removed scenes, like the Rarity one on Luna Eclipsed)

I think that sums it up

      ReplyDelete
    52. Octavia and Luna, along with 4ft plushies. If they did them with the G3s they can do them with the G4s.

Of course, the G3 plushies actually looked like the ponies they were meant to resemble. The G4 ones give me Vietnam-esque flashbacks to the G3.5s, so if they're going to make four-footers then they'd better fix up the plushie design first.

    64. Also, Wonderbolts/Shadowbolts. Maybe with the flight suits as plastic snap on things, so they can be removed.

And basic toys of the male characters, like Big Macintosh, Braeburn, Celestia's guards, etc. The blindbag ones are nice, but having them in the other toys too would be even nicer. And maybe a two-legged Spike? He walks upright in the show but the only toy of him is on all fours. XD

      ReplyDelete
    65. Many fans create their own characters.

      ReplyDelete
    75. I really want some high quality plushies that are of the same quality as the fan made ones. The baby Pinkie and Spike are just creepy.

I would like to see toy figures of villians. I don't know what Hasbro has against making toys of MLP villains. They did the same thing in G1.

I would like to see figures made of Zecora, Philomena, the Buffalo, Gilda and other non pony characters and creatures.

I would like to see a bi-pedal Spike.

Play sets made of the other prominent locations of Ponyville. The Library, Sugar Cube Corner, Fluttershy's Cottage, etc.
While we're at it a Sweat Apple Acres play set that is an actual barn, and make Rarity's Carousel Boutique the dress-up play set. Someone seriously dropped the ball on those two.

      Posters

Comic books and/or Picture books that are similar to the feel and tome of the show.

      Show accurate Gala Dresses.

That's all I can think of right now. but more then anything else I want Plushies.

    98. What I want to see:
      Articulated Figures.
Better hair on the blindbag Ponies.
Fluttershy Blindbag that isn't Rainbow Dash.
      More Big Mac

      What we probably will see:
More rooted hair Ponies reusing the same molding as the Mane 6
      Terribly made Plushies
Pointless roleplaying toys. (Something like "Celestia Magic Wand!")
$20 DVD's with just two episodes and a lame pack-in Figure.

    99. QUALITY plushies. I'd die of joy if they mass produce this (or the non-gala version): http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CXjxoQ4u4eg/TpVacnmbB5I/AAAAAAAAN1U/nMNxU_lCIIo/s1600/Capture.JPG

    100. OF course, thank you, creators and producers of the show, for reading the things we bronies talk about. There are a few things that I look for, and dream of, so in no particular order, let me basically add my voice to the following requests I'm sure have been made:

      - Molded-hair toys the size of the brushables. The term "show-accurate" is being thrown around a lot, and I agree with it.

      - Derpy and individual Cutie Mark Crusader toys.

      - More options in clothing. I especially liked neckties, Cutie Mark Polos would rock - something I think any brony would like is something subtle and business-casual. There are so many adult men in the audience, we know you like this fact, throw us something we can wear to our jobs.

      - Posters. I check poster sections of stores every chance I get hoping to see something new.

      - Plushies. Without the tangled mess of a mane that can never look like the show. In sizes a grown man can hug well.

      - School supplies (which also counts as office supplies), including larger backpacks and lunch boxes. Especially folders and notebooks.

      - Season DVD box sets, or at least better planning in DVD sets (no more two-episodes-about-the-gala-and-no-gala-episode sets).

And, as long as I have your attention:

      - A Magic: the Gathering set. Even if you don't label it as such, just release a Trading Card game that winds up being compatible. I mean, you all own Wizards of the Coast. D&D stuff would be nice too, but I'd love to see Magic cards. Even just one promo.

And of course, I also throw in that I have limited my purchases of merchandise because it is made in China. Lots of people over here need jobs, the community would appreciate it, and as the parent of a member of your original target audience, I assure you I am even more strict on this with my children's toys.

    103. I want show-accurate Lyra, Bon-Bon, Derpy and Dinky figures, like the grab-bags. And filly versions.

      ReplyDelete
    104. Good plushies would be cool. I love plushies.

More realistically, I guess I'd like to see brushable figures of some background pony models. Whether they use our names or not, I'd love to have a Lyra and Carrot Top on my desk.

      Also Bon-Bon.

      ReplyDelete
    106. Oh, I'd so love a Discord plushie! It'd go so good with my overalls (Swedish student thingy)!

Other than that, more accuracy! Stop the molding and make them actually look like the characters they're supposed to look like!

All in all, to have them stop treating their customers like they're foals (even though the intended market actually is). They've succeeded in the show, now they just have to take this last step into merchandise, and they're ready to go on for ages!

      ReplyDelete
    107. @MichaelJAW

I was waiting for someone to mention that one. That is definitely not a mass-produced plushie. It's certainly hand-crafted and crafted quite well. You're not going to get something that nice and intricate from most any mass-produced toy line. One reason these go for so much is because they're so expertly hand-crafted.

      ReplyDelete
    108. I'd like the see a normal sized Big Macintosh toy, as well as any of the other guy ponies. If they made a Big Mac one, this Brony would happily buy one with a grin on his face.

      2. A tiny Gummy that has a hair clip in his mouth so that he can clamp onto ponies' hair.

      3. A party set for Pinkie Pie that includes Rocky, Mr. Turnip, Sir Lints-a-lot and Madame LaFlour.

Nightmare Moon silicone glitter hair like described above with Luna)

      Discord... Nuff said.

BLIND BAGS ACTUALLY FOR SALE IN THE USA!!! We are STILL waiting for ANY AT ALL, and have only received the 12 pack Toys'R'Us exclusive set. While this set DOES cover the Mane 6 and provides 6 unique recolors, it leaves 36 additional unique Blind Bag ponies unavailable (removing the Mane 6, since the Toys'R'Us box includes them, and they are repeated in each wave of blind bags). In addition, there is already word of the NEW THIRD WAVE Blind Bags with the male characters added. Assuming the same pattern of the Mane 6 being repeated, and 18 new ponies (mix of recolors and new male ponies), that means the USA has only received 12 out of a total of 66 unique blind bag ponies.

      More crystal ponies

More named background characters FROM THE SHOW, and INCLUDING MALE ponies in the standard 3 inch toy size.

A Luna Gift set that features a molded hair Luna, Fluttershy, Rarity, and Rainbow Dash, and maybe Nightmare moon as well, so people who bought the 5 piece Gift Set (Celestia, Twilight, AJ, Pinkie, and Spike) can complete that line of toys with a complete set of the mane 6 and both Princesses.

An Everfree action set that contains Everfree forest creatures. The manticore, the cockatrice, the hydra, and possibly Nightmare Moon, if not part of the above mentioned gift set. To top off the set, include an Ursa Minor in the form of an inflatable toy. I've seen toys made using low cost manufacturing methods that are similar to inflatable pool toys. Make the plastic translucent blue, and print the star patterns and the appearance of the bear, and the end result is a unique Everfree Forest toy that is physically large, yet can be packed into a relatively small package, is cheap to make, and does not betray the scale of the figure in comparison to it's scale in the TV show. It even has the benefit of mimicking the etherial star creature appearance of the Ursa.

Also... Ursa Minor teddy bear. Dawwwwww! Ponyville water tower "bottle" included! :D

Show ACCURATE shaped and scaled Fashion Princess ponies. The fashion ponies they released for for Celestia and Luna should be renamed Tia and Woona. They look like filly Alicorns. I want properly scaled ADULT sized Fashion Celestia and Luna. Two molds, Luna being slightly smaller, Celestia being the larger of course. Also, show correct colors.

Did I mention BLIND BAGS in the USA!!!

      THAT

    124. Show accurate stuff. Don't get me wrong, I like the merch I have, but the Twilight plushie they made needs longer hair in front, and both she and my Fluttershy toy only have their cutie marks on one side. If they made their stuff more like the characters in the show, I'd have absolutely no problems buying it, but they don't, so I always feel weird buying them in Target. It may also have something to do with the weird looks I get from other customers.

      Also, more plushies. Pleeeeease.

      ReplyDelete
    125. OK, since others have not restricted themselves to outright toys...

Season 1 BluRay, with special features.

G4 versions of the pony blanks. Rather than whole ponies, I say have a few assemble yourself parts:
*Head Styles (Mare horn/none, Stallion horn/none, filly horn/none, colt horn/none, maybe a few character specific styles, etc).
*Body Styles (Mare standing pose wing slots/none, Mare raised foreleg pose wing slots/none, Mare reared up pose wing slots/none, Stallion standing pose wing slots/none, Stallion raised foreleg pose wing slots/none, Stallion Mare reared up pose wing slots/none
*Wing Styles Large, medium, and small wing pairs in flared/flight/tucked poses, meant to fit inside the wing slots on the back of bodies with those slots (think how the wings with on molded hair Princess Celestia)

Also.. regarding the blank ponies in G4 shapes... Painting is fine and all, but I would like to see Hasbro sell decal sheets for custom pony makers. It should include several styles of eyes, as well as a variety of cutie marks, as seen on both toys and the TV show ponies. Cutie marks and eyes should be provided in mirrored pairs, and should be applicable to existing official toys as well. They should also include a decals in the set scaled larger to "finish" the Fashion ponies and the talking Celestia toys. They could sell the sets to let us fix the glaring flaw of all their toys being missing a cutie mark on one side. The TV show has CONFIRMED that cutie marks are on BOTH FLANKS!

At least if they sell a decal set, we have the OPTION of fixing our ponies, making customs with HIGH QUALITY decals for eyes and cutiemarks, and make us happy. I can't imagine a decal sheet would be expensive to produce. I'd pay a profit premium for the chance to "fix" all my half blank flank ponies, and to make customs.

They could also have a section of random "elements" that could be assembled to create custom cutiemarks.

I love the idea of a SIMPLE decal set!

      ReplyDelete
    126. Season box sets and show accurate toys.

      ReplyDelete
    127. Blu-Ray Collector's set, preferably with a DVD bundled in, I love these combo sets. Remastered soundtrack would be a nice bonus, with the background noise removed.

Show Accurate plushies. Like that one of Fluttershy that sold for $2,000. I've gotten plushies of equal quality as an add in for some Godiva's Chocolates, and the price tag was only $20 (the candy cost almost that much). So once the pattern is made its easy to mass produce in quality. Get rid of the horrid aborted pony fetus dolls!

Show Accurate COLLECTABLE figures. Like McFarlane Quality stuff. I mean, there's figures of JAY AND SILENT BOB for goodness sake! Where's my damn Fluttershy? I'm still kicking myself for not buying the Shrek Dragon that McFarlane put out.

I want to add a suggestion that I don't think no one mentioned before.
My Little Pony KRE-O sets! There has to be more variety than just Transformers all the time!

      ReplyDelete
    131. I'd like more show-accurate things, of more background ponies and other characters in addition to the mane 6. I really liked the larger non-brushable figures, and I really like the small figures, and I'd like to see more of both.

      ReplyDelete
    132. Show accurate plushies.

And a Luna plushie, now that would be cool! Basically, some more huggable stuff.

      ReplyDelete
    133. DVD/Blu-Ray boxsets seem like utter no-brainers to me. Kind of surprised there hasn't been an announcement of these yet.

Also, while I wouldn't be buying this, absolutely everyone who has expressed an interest in buying a figurine or plushie (which is a lot of people), wants them to actually look like the show characters and not some creepy mutated version of them. Not just making Celestia the right color, the right proportions.

Look at this beautiful fanmade-plushie sold on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/120792470190?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

It went for $2475. If Hasbro made and sold plushies of that quality for $150 they would still be able to sell an awful lot of them.

    143. A CD album of all the songs from season 1, plus highlights of William Anderson's background music (including Pinkie's Parasprite Polka - the full mix, and Rarity's Fashion Show, for example). Use the Phineas and Ferb CDs as an example. You could even have the characters have short dialoge segments in between tracks, with new dialoge (not from the show) recorded.

A full season one DVD and Blu-ray release. (DVD for folks like me without a Blu-ray player.) For both DVD and Blu-ray: 5.1 surround sound mix, 2.0 Dolby Stereo mix, 5.1 SFX-only mix, 2.0 music-only mix, subtitles in English, Spanish, and French. Audio tracks: English, English descriptive video service, Spanish, and French. Bonus features: Storyboard progression reels, "Making of a Scene" in the style of Jinratgeist, cast and crew commentary and/or interviews, sing-along videos with the lyrics at the bottom like the Karaoke videos currently on YouTube. THE WORKS!

That's the maximum I'd ask for. At the bare minimum, I ask for a CD album release (yes, a physical CD) with all the songs from season one, plus a DVD/Blu-ray release with surround sound of all the episodes. That's all I ask for.

Do people who have the ability to make these things happen actually read these comments?

    155. How Hasbro can have the savvy to not issue any cease-and-desists and let Ponies snowball into this giant colossus yet not try to cater to the same market with tons of disposable income is beyond me.

@Hasbro: Consider that the number of adult fans increased by about a factor of 50 over the last 13 months. This is because they are fans of the show and that is where the emotional connection exists. The show is the center of everything. Any merchandise that is aimed at Bronies must reflect the show. It cannot be some weird mutated thing. The show is not an advertisement for merchandise for them, and there is a gold mine waiting to be tapped if you would recognize that. You could be selling high-end plushies for $250 and smaller, less detailed ones for $50 and be selling a ton if they just looked like the characters in the show instead of some bizarre mutant offspring. Richer parents of your primary demographic would also buy some of these, you know.

Obviously their original target demographic is going to remain their focus, but if they want to go after Bronies, treat the show as the center of everything. We're not going to want things that look like bastardized mutant versions of the show we love anymore than 98% of us cared about ponies pre-G4.

    161. Generally, the same thing @richfiles and a few others have said: a Princess Luna Gift Set with Rarity, Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy. All the things available in stores in my area, not divided up by country and "exclusives" to store X. Figurines and plushes with at least this level of accuracy and quality, but don't expect people to pay $4000 each for them. DVD box sets of entire seasons, not dribbles and drabs. Quality soundtracks. Quality compilations of fanmusic, remastered. Art of MLP:FIM book. I assume that MLP figurines are very durable, so ceramic versions are probably overkill, except tiny ceramic ones to put in Epiphany cakes (gateau du roi). Mugs, pins, watches, alarm clocks, nightlights, cookie cutters, Pinkie Pie cake decorator (icing syringes) sets, Twilight's guide to all things astronomy, Applejack's apple recipe book, a flying Rainbow Dash 7 RC airplane, a Rarity programable embroidery sewing machine (expensive?), a Fluttershy wild animal care and habitat book (bird feeders, brush piles for rabbits...), a MLP:FIM How to Draw book. For Easter: chocolate ponies.

The second line of toys have to be really cute plushies of course. The mane 6 would be enough for me. But more is better of course.
A Derpy plush would be awesome.

    170. I'd purchase products that looked more like the characters on the show. I don't like a majority of stuff that's currently on sale now because I find that they just doesn't look like any of the characters from the show.

Build A Pony Workshop. Make it happen.

    171. One thing I forgot last time. I want a place where I could actually buy some of this stuff! At the moment the only way is ebay, as the stores here don't have what I want and the online stores I've found don't ship here :P So maybe an online store that ships worldwide? Or at least to Finland -.-
