• Octavia Cello Game

Distoorted over at the Bronies United Livejournal group has created an Octavia cello playing game.  It's similar to that piano app from a while back.

If you want to give it a shot, hit up the link here!

    3. Out off all the goofy stuff in the fandom, this is the one thing that really gets to me for some reason. She plays the double bass. Not the cello. You sit to play a cello. You stand to play the double bass.

    4. She plays the Bass, NOT THE CELLO!

Just be glad there aren't bronies here that are like you but with grammar.

    8. How am I supposed to say "INB4 Cello vs. Double Bass" when people beat me to it?

Also, Double Bass doesn't have tuning pegs.

That's an oversight, like how Vinyl Scratch's music note is backwards.

    11. Well, since cutie marks are on both sides of a pony, it stands to reason one of them would be backwards if it's mirrored.

Now, which side is the `correct' side...?

    12. This game is suprisingly hard for me

    16. Maybe because Lyra is the only pony who can actually sit, the rest play cello standing up?

      ReplyDelete
    17. Another thing, if a pony is 3'4" it makes more sense in terms of scale that she plays a cello.

      ReplyDelete
    18. This thing is actually pretty bitchin'.

      @Anonymous

When statements of that nature start being made, the entire debate becomes moot (which was basically my point in the first place); because at that point how can you tell what the original intent was?

      ReplyDelete
    19. If you think about how small ponies actually are, a cello would be double bass sized for them. You just can't get the low notes of a double bass out of a cello sized instrument.

yeah um cello CAN be played standing up. Just thought I'd inform you all.

      ReplyDelete
    21. Ooooooh~ Fun, fun.

As for what is played, a lot of people in are debate about whether it's a cello or a double bass. Indeed, you sit to play a cello and stand to play a double bass. Some have commented it's because of how the bow is being held, that makes it a cello. I also theorize about the size of a pony in relationship to the instrument. If the relationship of the size of a pony (or how people perceive them to be in size) to a instrument is the same as humans are to instruments, then that would tell it's a double bass of course. Then again, if for whatever reason, the instruments are the size of a normal human instrument, it'd be a cello. Because of how small ponies are thought to be. Though then no one would be big enough to really play a double bass. Also is commented how a cello is heard in the show and not a double bass when Octavia is playing.

Since I was one of the original people, if not the very first to coin her name, I basically see her as myself and almost an OC. Bet you couldn't tell from the name, huh? lol And since I'm a musician in real life. So I stick to what I myself think it is. Though I haven't decided quite yet myself even. To be honest. There's good argument from both sides.

The game is awesome, except for one fatal flaw.

I don't know if this is the game or my headphones (95% sure it is the game), but I hear this horrible "clicking" each time a sound stops and starts.

Correct. In this case, though, notic how the instrument is shorter than the player. Octavia's instrument is taller than her, as a double bass would be.

      ReplyDelete
    25. I just taught my four-year-old sister how to play this game.

      ReplyDelete
    26. To fix the clicking, the individual sound files need to be edited to have both a fade in and fade out. What's happening is the concatenation of individual sounds leaves a flat '0' value in the digital output, so the speaker drops from a nominal voltage to 0 immediately and back up to a nominal voltage. That's what produces the click. If there's a head and tail to each one that smooths this transition, you won't hear it. even just a few milliseconds of fade in/out should do it. This is a pretty common problem when doing concatenation of low sample rate sound files.

I'm seriously considering that maybe in Equestria they have separate instruments all together. The flaw with that is how all of the instruments Pinkie Pie uses in Swarm of the Century are real instruments. But the tuba was a sousaphone. They should have clarified that.

But I really wanted a proper go at this cause Octavia's one of my favorite background ponies.

    34. Hokay, figure I'll add my two-cents into the Bass/Cello debate. Sure, you have to sit down to play a cello because for a human a cello is too short to be played standing up. However, after examining some of the height estimations of ponies in comparison to apples/bunnies, we have seen that a pony comes to about waist height of a human, which would be slightly taller standing up. A human would need to sit down for a cello, while a pony could easily just stand up, due to being far shorter.

Also, I would like to point out that Octavia's cutie mark is a Treble Clef. The cello is played in the bass, tenor, and TREBLE clef. The upright bass however is played almost exclusively in the bass clef. Therefore it would make sense that her cutie mark would be a treble clef is she played cello, but would make less sense is she played the double bass. Now can we stop arguing and enjoy the cello game? It's very we done, and massive props to the creator.

      ReplyDelete
    35. Ill be sure to tinker with this later on!

      ReplyDelete
    36. This thing about a pony being shorter...

...what, do you think they're using human instruments left over from the apocalypse?

It's a pony-sized instrument. She stands to play it. Ergo, bass.

      ReplyDelete
    37. Not a game, per se. More of a software toy.

Do remember one thing when talking about instrument size -- physics, assuming they are the same (which is debatable) would conclude that the the size of the instrument has to be the same as human ones, so one needs to consider that.

I do think many people claim she plays a cello because it's a cello that plays her part in the actual episode.

      ReplyDelete
    38. Truly this is the triumph of man. Go home everypony, we're done here.

    40. @Bosstone

This. Ponies are making pony-sized instruments for other ponies. You can't factor in human sizing into this.

      ReplyDelete
    41. Guys. Seriously. Google this shit. You don't play cello like that. She is very CLEARLY playing an upright bass. It's just sad that so many people are calling it a cello. Use fucking Wikipedia.

      ReplyDelete
    42. If it's a cello, and it's just human sized, then how come all the other instruments are pony sized? The piano, sousaphone, harp and all of pinkie's instruments fit perfectly fine. To end this debate, I say that it's an entirely new instrument. Hurry everyone, think of a name!

    43. She's playing the Octaviarium.

    52. @Anonymous

This is also a good thought. That perhaps it wasn't really supposed to be one or the other in particular. Just look like a certain instrument overall. If we want to get technical, it has two tuning pegs. Remember, this is a cartoon afterall. ;)

But there's good valid points from both sides of the argument.

Also, amazing creation. My props go out to the maker (though the click issue is a bit of a nuisance), and Macon did an amazing job with those Giggle at the Ghostie chords (though I personally felt it needed to be tweaked towards more of a 1-w-www-f-df-w--1-w-ww-f--q----fq-w-------llllll1-w-w-w-f-df-w--1-w-ww-f--q----fq-w-------llllllf-d-fw-d--fw--lf-d-fw--d-f-----f-ddd-a-s-wwqf--w-f-qw--f-q-----llllqw--s---f--fdf-q-w--1---ww-q-f-q--w-s---f--fdf-q-qw-f-qw-w--qf-q----llllllllslllslllsllllllls-------d-d-a-ds-f------w-w-f-wq-q------d-d-a-ds-f------www-f-wq-q------d-d-a-ds-f------w-w-f-wq-q----f-ddddddddffffffffssssssssaaaavvvvccccxxllc----------------------- , myself)

      ReplyDelete
    57. @showmetheblueprints

The clicking occurs when a soundwave is abruptly terminated rather than attenuating. It's the fault of the samples being used by the program, not your system or headphones.

This thing about her standing to play.

...what, do you think that way a pony plays an instrument will be exactly the way a human does?

It's a custom instrument. Whether she sits or stands doesn't really matter. Ergo, trout.

      ReplyDelete
    61. very well done, flows well, no lag

I know i'm not the first to say this, but it's an upright bass, so i think a bass version should be created

    65. I played the Song of Healing. It was sweet.

      ReplyDelete
    66. I'm putting in my two notes worth for the double bass/cello debate.

-You sit to play the Cello, and stand to play the double bass. She is obviously standing.

-For those of you that say the ponies are so small that the cello would be bigger than the pony, the instruments are pony sized. You can tell because of the pianos and the two cases of tubas depicted in the show. If every instrument (and and theres alot, especially in swarm of the century) is adjusted to pony size, then so would the cello and bass, in this case the bass.

@technifreak5 come on man, double basses have tuning pegs, use google images for once.and if you're debating that debate that it's a cello because the tuning pegs stick out, they're not sticking out, it's just the angle the bass is held. if they were sticking out, then the tuning pegs on the left side would be sticking out as well.

Double Bass 3, Cello 0. Unless you count the cutie mark, which is debatable because her talent is music in general. besides i'm a jazz bassist, i usually end up reading treble clef music anyways :D

      ReplyDelete
    67. @Bramaho

Ah, so you're the one who posted those. Outstanding work man!

And thanks for the tip, I'll fiddle around with it some more tomorrow.

    68. I'm going to go with saying its a double bass as she is standing to play. Most of the people I know would say cello though because the bow looks like a french bow and when they think bass they see a german bow, but dose it really matter both the cello and bass are awesome.
