    2. You would post this right as I'm heading out. Admit it Sethisto, you did that on purpose.

Oh well, I'll be back tonight and see how many of these I can make it through before sleep deprivation claims me!

    3. Can't wait to get reading all this stuff, luckily there's a bank holiday tomorrow!

Special thanks to the artist of number 36, that pic is absolutely a perfect representation of what was in my head while I was writing it! :)

    4. *sighs wistfully*

...Next time. I swear to Celestia. Next time, I'm making it into a Friendoff, come hay or high water.

At least there's a lot of awesome new content for me to peruse.

    8. Well, I've checked out all the drawfriends that are up, and I love all but two of them (won't say which though). But Seth,I've noticed that for some story posts you've replaced their pics with the drawfriends, and for some you haven't. Why?

Now, off to read all the Writefriends. And I mean all of them. Ever. Cos I haven't read the ones from previous months yet.

    12. To the author of "Trixie's Great and Power Revenge":

Excellent opening. I liked how you got the action and the information together in one paragraph. It was great, the way the repetition of Twilight running across a hall was filled in with her "It was supposed to be a normal day" monologue.

The scene with Trixie doing... intimate things with Twilight was... confusing for me. On one hand, I usually ignore these parts, and skip them very quickly; however, this particular series of... scenes caught my attention, probably because of how semi-original, bizarre, and quite funny giving a hoof-job to a horn is. I need to thank you for putting this series of events in my head... or something. I'm not really sure.

The end part with Twilight making poor excuses, hiding in her bedroom, and having what is the Equestrian equivalent of a telephone number was bloody brilliant. I have to say though, it's 3 days, not 1; 1 day still seems desperate.

    13. I D. Shadows have nothing better to do then criticize every single one of these entries down to the last. In a positive light no less.

But I'm only going to do the first five if anyone wants me to write more I will.

      1. Combo breaker, two pics for the price of one. Nice work on the bubbles art.

      2. Super sweet art that is, someone better put it up as their background I can't as I'm running a cupcake related evil empire in the background after tornado incident.

      3. Some spelling and grammar mistakes and there is no description of Rainbows parents blunting the effect a bit. But otherwise overall good idea.

      4. Weighted Companion Pony equals win. But don't be sad the weighted Companion Pony will be back again, but that would be spoiling it entirely now wouldn't it? (Play Portal 2 subliminal advertisement here, co-op mode is fun when you can cause your friend to explode)

      5. The toaster "that could fire through walls" sells how quirky Ditzy's household is.

    14. @ entry 7
Pic was requested from Rubrony by me. I don't read fanfics, but I'd take quick look at this one and it is fun to see how my conception behind that picture *totally* differs from the authors' view.

That's why I love the art - many people see different things behind the painting. Awesome.

      ReplyDelete
    15. Yay! I can't believe people are actually reading my story!
Also, these all are amazing (the pics, and all the fics that I've read so far). SERIOUSLY.

    16. The quest for the friendship stones image wins. Wait, we aren't doing a vote? Well it wins anyway.

    17. SO MUCH CONTENT i'm gonna read and see so much today yay¡¡

    19. Guys, number 28.
Number 28 contains win of untold proportions.
      Number 28.

      ReplyDelete
    20. To the author of "Twilight, and the Supreme and Omnipotent Trixie":

You need work with your formatting.

The content was great. I really liked how the situation was incredibly jarring for Twilight, but you made her assume that Trixie had the hots for her too soon. It would have been better if Trixie had... interacted... with her first before Twilight assumed that, or it could be that the logical conclusion came after crazier, more illogical theories.

The end was kind of lacking in its bittersweet quality. You could have had Twilight have a realization that Celestia was still there, and that all of it was a dream, THEN have her break down crying than mush it all up in one lump. Try a style like "Clerical Error", where Twilight's despair is made only after a Twilight Sparkle moment.

The part with Celestia and Trixie being behind all this was nice, but you really should give a new person a line. Don't lump dialogue from different people on a single paragraph. It's confusing.

Anyways, with a little reformatting, and some tweaking, you'll have a fine story on your hands.

    21. @D. Shadows

Could you criticize number 9 as well?

36 is cool for a cool history and 1 makes me cry a lot.

Well, this pretty much sums everything.

      ReplyDelete
    29. I know I've asked this before, but I've gotten no response.

Was there a fanfic where there was a drought in Ponyville, and Rainbow Dash was racing to push rapidly dissolving clouds into place before they evaporated?

It's "Letters, Letters, Letters" by EsperDerek. A shipping fiction between Twilight and Celestia.

I think that's the one you're looking for, but I make no promises.

    36. Writefriend reviews, in random order:

      Airshipping is Magic (6): O_o
The Art of Friendship (16): o_O
Both of these I saw on DA, and these are both hilarious, if for no other reason than because they simply exist.

Cutie Castastrophe (9): A good short that expresses its sentiment cleanly and without lingering on it too long.

The Origin of Suncloth (22): Although the story itself is average, it sports an unusual writing style that is strangely effective.

Madam Tarot's Readings: Celestia (29): It works well for what it is, grammatical distractions aside.

A Proud Day (3): ... A cute little scene. I'm wondering if "weather or not" was a deliberate misspelling (grammarnazi: it's "whether").

Trix and Stones (8): It's... so beautiful *sniff*. It's now one of my favorite Trixie stories.

Trixie's Treatment (17): D'awww. It's sweet, and I am reminded to brush my teeth lest this story give me cavities.

This Is Your Life (33): I wasn't sold on this at first, and then I hit the second part and I'm like, oh, I get it now.

Dinky's Morning (5): I love the writing style on this. It's peppered with amusing little details that give the morning a lively feel.

Will read/review the rest of these later. Don't want to rush through these!

    39. Well okay, I'll do five more considering I'm reading or looking at all of these.

      6. Hilarious outcome and reminds me of an some old cartoons where all the character in the worlds are vehicles. In particular those cartoons were about a car that wants to be a hot rod and a baby jet plane racing around the world, this brought that memory up. Also there certainly is airshipping.

      7. Wordy and kind of like power rangers mixing into Sailor Moon. But otherwise Kronos was very patient and not very rude with waiting to fight two ponies who stopped to chat, then got magical upgrades before curb stomping him.

Even Bahamut couldn't have lost quicker then that. I wonder what compromise; if any, did they come to, to make Kronos leave the ponies alone.

There's also the subtle hint that Luna knows of Trixie.

      8. Sticks and stones can break bones and no matter what anyone tells you, WORDS CAN HURT!

Even if they are not written or said in anger, some words like "good bye" hurt the worst if it's forever.

So be careful what is said or done, because it might all come back on you for one.

Trixie's story is quite a sad tale, but the show must go on as they say as well.

9(requested). Not everyone can understand that there are multiple interpretations that can be placed on a single symbol, Tiara is overestimating herself there.

A crown or tiara does not necessarily mean you were meant to rule, it could also mean you were meant to be a hatter or you had a love of dressing up.

Which brings up the interesting question to how she got her cutie mark in the first place. If you threw that in the story it would be a bit more interesting and how exactly did the CMC ruin the party? It went on without a hitch, but just without her.

From what I understand it was because Diamond was full of herself that things went bad, because she chose to target someone for being different and it backfired on her.

It is a character building story that needs a back story on how she got her mark, plus Silver Spoon had gained hers relatively at the same time so thats probably why they are best friends.

Tiara will eventually become a high society pony like those seen in Fluttershy's temporary job as a model. In fact that's the direction I can see Tiara going, because she's one for the glamourous lifestyle.

Silver spoon will eventually follow being spoon fed whatever information she can find and will likely one day be a reporter. Her mark can mean being exceptionally well off or just very lucky.

In the ending I thought it was sweet if a tad bitter in comparison to those who've seen 'Griffon the Brush off'. The ending morale strikes true however "Treat others how you want to be treated" and now I know Twilight is creepily stalking Applebloom for frienship lessons to write to Celestia.

Even if that was unintentional it's a good laugh once you realize Twilight can't possibly have known about their conversation unless she was there snooping around like she was watching Pinkie Pie again.

      10. I've always thought of Trixie as more of a masochistic person myself. But she certainly has powerful if dainty hooves, for magical massaging. She certainly makes Twilight "Sparkle".

    45. Going through the ones that stood out for me:

      A Proud Day (3)
Overall a nice and heartwarming perspective for Dash's cutie mark origin! I especially like her rambling speech. :)
      Though with this, it may well be high time we finally put the 20% Cooler meme to bed. I do believe everypony is guilty of putting it in stories now. ^^;

      Trix and Stones (8)
I liked the Trixie origins--especially the explanations for how she got her title and how the Ursa Major rumor got started. (I wonder how many hometowns Trixie is going to have by this time next year. ^_^)
However, I really couldn't quite get into the "sad' parts--overlapping those on top of a fanon origin story made my mind glaze over a little.
Still, it's easy to tell some hard work was put into this. Good job!

      For My Sister (7)
I was about to give up on this story, then Nightmare Moon showed up, the story woke up, and I was having lots of fun! Seriously, the interaction you have between her and Luna is top notch! So you win. ^_^
This needed a beta reader quite badly, though. The amount of grammar and spelling errors is astounding. Satisfying nonetheless!

      Cutie Catastrophe (9)
Oh, this! A perfectly show-accurate epilogue to Call of the Cutie! And I love how the rich fillies stuck together as well! Simply marvelous! Thanks so much for writing this! :D

      And finally, for now:
The Great & Powerful Trixie's Seduction Brigade! (10/11)
...actually, I take it back. For the first time in a long time... I've got nothing. ^_^; I will say I was amused by these, however. In distinct but good ways!

Gosh, marathonning these can be draining! I'll get back to the rest as soon as I can!

    47. I like that everypony seems to like my story =D It's amazing the reviews it's been getting considering I put almost no work into it (Relatively speaking. It's not like I closed my eyes and just pushed something out in fifteen minutes. I didn't go all OCD over it though like I do with my professional work).

      ReplyDelete
    48. Some of these are really good. I was checking out almost every fic and really enjoying some of the art made from stories. However, when I got to the one with Applejack and Granny Smith(34), I laughed and noted it was a lot like... my... fic...

Holy shnikes. I nearly died. Someone made a beautiful piece of art that... well, now I feel awful for not participating. Accursed finals week... I'm so submitting next friend off, and that's a promise.

For now, I've so much more to read. Every fic is an adventure, and made for our enjoyment. It's only right to extend such gratitude.

All of these are excellent. So very much.
      Great job everypony!

    51. My dangerous quest to give constructively honest comments continues!

      Luna's Biggest Fan (15)
      ...why would you do this that comic made me sad enough without even more substance being added to it ;_;

The (Modern) Art Of Friendship (16)
...Shift? I think it's time for an intervention. This needs to stop. At the rate you're breaking them, there won't be any minds left to read anyone else's stuff. :)

      Scootie Lagann (18)
Concrit time from a fellow crossover addict: I wanted to like this more than I did, but... well, for starters, it kept switching narrators. The idea and the crosscasting are both perfect, as is the scene you set, but I found the prose hard to decipher, and containing far more recap than might have been neccessary. I suggest a retool of the narration (perhaps switch to full-in third person?) and maaaaybe fleshing some of your recap stuff out if you have time--'cause this has got wicked potential! :)

      Trixie's Treatment (17)
I like seeing folks giving Trixie a softer side sometimes; seems she's always being written into super-climactic vs. Twilight showdowns. (Which I also like, but... yeah.) This one gets downright noble in places and was a joy to read.

      The Origin of Suncloth (22)
      Aha! My rival in Rarity-sleep!
Oh, hey, your story made suncloth, mine made mooncloth. What are the odds, huh? ^^ Loved the premise, though it seemed you wanted to get to the end of things a little quickly...

That picture is interesting... It works for both the ''Base Story'' and the Alternative Story Ending.

      That's a good point.

      ReplyDelete
    53. Uh... Crazyredemu that picture only has one parent pony the other pony in the picture is Rainbow Dash, thus the need for parental description is actually required or else Rainbow Dashes mom could be a cloud shaped like a pony for all we know.

Then again I'm not even sure that is her father, as the picture was just the inspiration for the story.

    54. I'm back, and you know what that means? It's time for MINI-REVIEWS! I'll confine myself to the stories; I don't feel even slightly qualified to judge art. Suffice to say, it's all awesome.

3 (A Proud Day): Has some grammar problems, but the story concept is certainly in keeping with the spirit of the friend-off. A heartwarming read.

4 (My Little Companion Cube): I've never played Portal. I'm going to assume this story would make more sense if I had (but that's hardly the author's fault now, is it?). The writing was solid.

5 (Dinky's Morning): I thought I was going to explode from sheer awesome when I saw the Pony+Diskworld+Dune crossover joke. The rest of the story was very sweet, and the poem was a nice touch.

6 (Airshipping is magic): SO...MANY...PUNS! I can't take it! This is so nonsensical bizarre, I love it!

7 (For My Sister): Ooh, a long one! Well, let's dive in! ...Well, that was quite the epic tale. It would have been improved by another round of editing (badly), but it was excellent nonetheless.

8 (Trix and Stones May Break My Bones):Incredibly poigniant, this story does a marvelous job of making Trixie sympathetic without glossing over her bravado and attitude.

      More as I continue reading...

      ReplyDelete
    55. Well I sent them both links, Oh well, if you read the description on the DA page it has the links and yes that art is an oc dad for Dash.
I have more stories with them in it and at the beginning of them I put a paragraph at the top telling people to check out the art first.

http://ellis1342.deviantart.com/ she has a bunch of art with parent ponies in it some are ocs and others are from the older Pony shows. Im not that great at fiction but her art rocks!

      ReplyDelete
    56. Continuing on...

9 (Cutie Catastrophe): The author has a real feel for the hyper-dramatics of middle school girls. The story is simple and straightforward, but funny and enjoyable. Heck, it even has a moral!

10 (Trixie's Great and Powerful Revenge): I'm not much of a shipping fan, but this one was pretty funny. The way Trixie kept using 'revenge' as a euphamism reminded me of a certain Oglaf comic, which (despite being funny as hell) I won't describe for decency's sake.

11 (Twilight & the Supreme and Omnipotent Trixie): Ooh, two stories about the same picture! This should be interesting! ...Sadly, this story was so poorly edited it was almost unreadable. I'm trying to be nice with my reviews (It is the FRIEND off, after all), but this story is a crime against proper punctuation.

12 (A Story of Granny Pie): When I glanced at this, I accidentally read the Author line as the tags line. I was worried for a minute there... Unfortunately, this story is also very poorly put together. Writers, there are plenty of nice people over on Ponychan (and elsewhere, I assume) who are willing to help you edit your stories if you just ask!

13 (Qualities of a Lover): The diary format was an interesting choice, and I think it served this story well. The ending was perfect, though it does make Twilight sound a little...unbalanced. Maybe she just needs to get out more? I'm sure she'll figure it out eventually.

      Still reading...

Thank you! I did have a lot of fun writing Tiara's histrionics--and I would say a middle school girl would be good at writing that type.

    59. More and more mini-reviews!

15 (Luna's Biggest Fan): I tried to sympathize with Luna, I really did, but the joke is just to funny. It probably doesn't help that I was an eldest child, and I can relate to pulling pranks like this on my younger siblings (yes, sometimes I made them cry). Well-written and funny (whether intentional or not, that's a good thing).

16 (The Art of Friendship): This is giving Friendshipping is Magic a real run for its money in the 'what in Equestria am I reading?' competition. I love this story to pieces (I'm a sucker for famous references and name puns), it made me laugh out loud repeatedly! The only thing I wish this story had was a bit at the end explaining what each painting name was a reference to: I got most of them, but 'Scrapplejack' eluded me.
...and I am now desperately resisting the urge to quote about fifteen different bits of that story. Well done.

17 (Trixie's Treatment): A very sweet story. Somehow, manages the improbable task of keeping Trixie basically in-character while also makeing her the good guy (mare).

18 (Scootie Lagann): I don't know how awesome you imagined this turning out, but it seems it came out pretty darn awesome to me. Heck, I don't even know what this is a crossover with, and I loved it!

21 (Scootabelle): Aw, the ending made me sad, and I don't even like shipping! Despite your warnings, I didn't think this was boring; it's true, not much happened, but the story doesn't needlessly pad itself, instead content to be an easily-consumable amuse-buche (I probably spelled that wrong, didn't I?).

22 (The Origin of Suncloth): Damn, I need some of that stuff! An interesting idea with the fabric, and very well explained.

23 (Bad Luck): This one's mine. Read it. With any luck, you won't hate it. If you do...sorry, my bad.

      Onward we go!

    60. @Bookish Delight

I'm glad you liked Trixie's Treatment, I put a fair bit of effort into trying to soften Trixie, while still maintaining the more absolute aspects of her personality. As for Scootie Lagann, I admit I wasn't quite as serious about it, and just ran with a crazy idea I had. For the most part it covers bits of Gurren Lagann eps 9-11 with a pony twist, and the only part that was really meant to be of any concenquence was Scootie's epic moment near the end. Not sure if I want to do this one in full, as I already have other writing projects on the go. However, the 'potential' comment makes me wonder if I could (with proper serious effort next time) do the whole series. Thanks for the input, and glad you liked Trixie at least.

      ReplyDelete
    61. @Chris

My days on FF.net have given me a habit of replying to anyone who reviews my stuff.

Glad you liked both of my stories, although given a few points made by another commentator, Scootie Lagann (Crossover with an anime called Gurren Lagaan for anyone else unfamiliar) could have turned out better. Said comments also have me thinking about doing up the whole story, instead of just the one super awesome inspired moment. As for Trixie's Treatment, I put a lot of effort into my attempt at maintaining Trixie's personality, while at the same time beginning to soften her up. The title, in addition to her treating the fillies with laughter and magic, is also meant to show that innocent wonder can treat her chronic case of being a braggart.

    65. Boy, these are all so good!

24 (Derpy's Bebop): (Dangit, you've made it this far without quoting, don't start now...ah, to heck with it) "F*** YOU, TREE!" This story has a seriously sweet ending, of which I whole-heartedly approve. Remember kiddies; names can hurt!

25 (Mother May I?): I hate it when ponies laugh at Derpy just because of her eyes. Is it bad that I feel protective of a fan-created flying pony with bubbles on her rump? Despite the 'normal' tage, this story is sad, in a good way.

27 (Dashomon): Four stories for the price of one! Each version is interesting in its own right and adds something to the mix; very well handled.

28 (Every Opportunity to Succeed): Another Portal story! Someday I need to play that game. Nothing to complain about here.

29 (Madam Tarot's Readings: Celestia): Very pleasently creepy. Madam Tarot's reading sounds entirely genuine (if anything about tarot readings can be called 'genuine').

One more round of stories and we're done!

      ReplyDelete
    66. Anyone comment on number 32?

      ReplyDelete
    67. Okay, let's finish this!

31 (Scooting Onwards): This story really needs further editing. Scootaloo is always cute, though, so that tempers my ire somewhat.

33 (This is Your Life): That sounds like exactly the kind of half-baked idea the CMC would come up with. The silliness of the premise (and dialogue!) was very much in keeping with the spirit of the show itself.

37 (The Lunar Republic Strikes Back): A ponified retelling of one of the most iconic scenes in movie history? This has promise! The story can't seem to decide if it's a straight retelling or a parody, but is still enjoyable despite the lack of clear direction.

39 (Hard Cider): This story does a great job of combining western pacing and style with ponies. However, I can't help but wonder if AJ smokes those terrible fruit-flavored cigarillos, or the slightly more tolerable mini cigars.

...And that's it! At least, as of 1:30 local it is. If anyone submits a story after this, tough beans! It's way past my bedtime.

Good job everyone! And again, GREAT work by all the artists. Even though I didn't review your stuff, you are all amazing.

All Aperture science thingies can survive heat to incredible degrees. such as a dragons breathe so basically Companion Pony is invulnerable to being thrown "into a fire".

      Double happy ending for all.

      ReplyDelete
    88. Littlepip never described herself. I asked Kkat what her colors were, and she (or he? I've heard it both ways XD )said that she never described Littlepip's colors and stuff on purpose, leaving it up to the reader's interpretation. So those colors are the ones I imagine Littlepip having. The coat is based off of the default green color Pip-Boy's are in Fallout 3, and the mane is based off of the default amber color of the Pip-Boy you get in New Vegas ;)

      ReplyDelete
    89. If I get permission to make Fallout: Equestria a comic, I will be making it black and white (to me it just seems to fit better) with the occasional splash of color. So I dont have to worry about that. Now if only Kkat would respond to e-mails. XD

I really love your picture, and the story taking place in it. It especially pleased my OCD senses to see that you artfully made the edges curved. My only critique is that Rainbow Dash looks a little gleeful. Or is she supposed to?

      ReplyDelete
    94. @Ten Mihara:
Fusions are tough enough to manage without trying to process the entire series. Don't want you to burn out! But I will say that between you and the artist, the image of Scoots!Simon refused to leave my head all day. For what it's worth, I definitely feel it's an idea worth coming back to--but only if your heart is in it. :)

      @Chris:
Thanks! So glad you liked--keeping things whimsical was easily the most fun part. Though as a side-effect, my mind now keeps wandering to thoughts of an FiM-futureverse. Curse this runaway muse! :)

I love and adore it. I think you did a wonderful job of capturing the scene. I especially like the almost snow-globe like dome effect around the edges, like it's a sealed little world for just the two of them. Very nice touch!

    96. I think we need to have an adendum added to the FAQ.

Right next to the note about "fanfiction is usually just 'what can we ship Dash with'", there should be a footnote saying "and/or what we can turn Trixie and Twilight into while shipping them".

I should be less pleased at how this ended, but I can never, ever get angry at well-executed dark irony. :)

      Dashomon (27)
Posted on your story's page. Good but could definitely use some trimming.

      Scooting Onwards (31)
There's something profound in here, I just know it. Unfortunately, it's held back by a lack of a final prereading (lots of misused punctuation here) and possibly some scene-change trasitions. Work on that, because from what I could glean, what you were going for here--epic Scoots/Dash mentorship dynamic?--was really cool.

The Lunar Republic Strikes Back (37)
Okay, I admit it. I giggled mightily. :)

      This Is Your Life (33)
...odd. I feel like I've seen this somewhere before. Oh, well! Onward!

      Hard Cider (39)
Certainly not "show-accurate," but this story did an admirable job of making me believe what it was selling, and that's the important thing. I have room for a hardcore cowgirl Applejack in my heart now. :) Solid all around!

      And that's it! If I skipped you, rest assured it wasn't because I didn't like your story. Odds are it was either (a) I didn't feel I had anything significant to contribute (b) the fact that I've just never been able to "get into" Derpy or (c) I haven't finished Portal 2. ^_^;

Oh and the artists here, naturally, are all great.

      Writefriend Reviews part 2!:
Hard Cider (39): Mmm, good old fashioned western showdowns. Good stuff.

My Little Companion Cube (4): Obligatory crossover stuff, and definitely cute.

Bad Luck (23): Oh. Oh my. I... Wow. Was not expecting that. Well done.

A story of Granny Pie (12): Ow, that big huge paragraph. Ow. Remember: New speaker, new paragraph.

Twilight & The Supreme and Omnipotent Trixie (11): Needs a cleanup for grammar. Feels a little rushed. AND THEN THEY ALL-*shot*

Qualities of a Lover (13): Oh Twilight, don't ever change. <3 Captures her personality perfectly.

Scootabelle (21): It's cute. It's incredibly generic, yes, but it's still cute.

Every Opportunity to Succeed (28): I like the idea of a cake made with chocolate on a stick. Other than that it isn't much on the cohesive side, like GlaDOS's and Pinkie's lines are just randomly interjected in there.

Trixie’s Great and Powerful Revenge (10): Buttersc0tchSundae has spoiled me on sexy Twilight/Trixie times, so my first impression is that this is a little mild. That isn't to take anything away from this fic, it's still good.

Luna's Biggest Fan (15): Oh, Trollestia, no wonder your sister went berzerk.

Dashomon (27): I like the phrase "bouncing ideas off Pinkie, and getting them bounced back twice as weird". The story structure seemed a little off, since it just gave a semi-omniscient view of what everypony is thinking during the events.

The Lunar Republic Strikes Back (37): It's Star Wars with names changed... eh.

Going to bed for now, will hopefully get to the last few tomorrow.
