ReplyDeleteActually, for calculating the averages you don't have to do them all. Using a bit of statistics know-how you can take random samples of your database. It takes surprisingly few samples to get a very accurate projection of the whole population with (usually) a very low margin of error.

ReplyDeleteYup yup, very true. Right now I just super-imposed rough averages because it was using too much CPU calculating it. Ideally I could just look at the averages from the last 1000 tests and it would be accurate enough. I dunno, I'll look into a solution.
It's proving to be a challenge getting this properly optimized to handle several hundred results a minute.

ReplyDeleteForgive my ignorance of web development, but is there some reason you can't just compute the average every once in a while, store that and then have that result displayed as the average for individual people?
You could store new results in a cache from the previous 5 minutes (after the last average was taken) and then add and average it again with the new results.
I doubt the average changes that much in 5 minutes, so you would still get an accurate model of the average over time.

ReplyDeleteOh hay, that is actually a GREAT idea! When I get the server out of its coma and stable, I'll look into that as an option. Here I was thinking of other caching options, but that alone would be a pretty decent performance increase when it comes to the averages.
However it won't save the day, since true averages are kinda disabled right now anyway... and it's still strugglin' pretty bad. :'D
I got on a little earlier. I got Twilight Sparkle, which makes a ton of sense now that I think about it. I just moved to a small town from a big city and I had to make new friends and I'm a nerd and everything. I'm just happy a didn't get Rarity...

And don't worry about the average coming out any different than if you calculated it with "brute force" (as we call it). This method (if implemented right) will produce an identical average because of the associative properties of addition and the distributive properties of multiplication (or division, as it were).

ReplyDeleteTwilight Sparkle, with Fluttershy coming in second, was my result when I took this a little while back. I think I've building up a little more confidence since then? Fluttershy has too, though, so that's okay. ^_^
Now that it's midnight, I was able to get in. Twilight Sparkle all the way! Followed by Pinkie (no clue how that works), Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash for third, then Applejack, then Rarity with barely any. Clearly, I am not Cereal.

I just took it finally, I have been trying since about 7 every 30-60 minutes. It was fun and besides adapting Scootaloo I am apparently about 95% Twilight Sparkle. I am a somewhat above average on Pinkie pie which surprised me. I am a little above average on Fluttershy, yay!, and then pretty low on the others reaching about 1/3 to average on Rarity and Applejack and having what I assume is the bear minimum with Rainbow Dash. I guess I am not 20% cooler. This was really fun thought and a nice quiz.

ReplyDeleteTurns out I'm most like Applejack, but only just barely. I'm 2nd most like Dash, and then a smaller spike marks Pinkie Pie as third, and the rest are pretty darn neglible - sitting underneath the average.
I'm a little surprised, because I identify with Dash quite a lot. But now that I think about it, while I do share similar traits with her, half the reason why I relate to Dash so much is because she's also my idol technically. She represents a lot of the person I want to be: Courageous, fiercely loyal (I hold that virtue in high regard), ambitious, and a dreamer who has those dreams within reach.
When it comes thinking about how I compare to Applejack, it all makes sense. Honesty is something I keep close to my heart, probably closer than Loyalty, to the point that lying angers me far more than betrayal. While I'm not the most hard-working and physically active of people, when I have an important task to do, I see it through to the end. And I always make sure that I can be trusted to be dependable, reliable, and punctual.
Half of my daylight hours are spent working with my dad, the other half is spent taking care of my two-year old brother. Granted, he's no Cutie Mark Crusader, but he's a handful when he's wide awake. And since I've been babysitting him since he first came home after being born, he looks up to me a lot.
It just makes sense that I'm more like AJ than RD or even Pinkie. Because at my core, Honesty to myself, Loyalty to my family, and a willingness to work hard are just what makes me who I am. Sure, I look up to Dash, and dream to one day live to be as free as her, but I have a big family, and I have plenty of responsibilities while Dash has none and very of that.
I'm going to end up pondering over this further this evening.

I am fairly quiet, but can start a coversation. Live in kind of a country farmland villageish place. I do work hard. I am a pretty honest and stubborn person who dislikes losing even though I don't show it.
@ThatBronyDude Hmm, Applejack, with Twilight Sparkle an incredibly close second, barely below AJ. Yes, that's about what I'd expected. I've always felt myself as rather an intermediate between the two: highly logical and scientific, but with a deep love for the outdoors and growing things. My lab at work is full of plants. Definitely Fluttershy, but with Applejack really close by, and then Twilight and Pinkie (Pinkie?!) not too far behind. Virtually no Rarity (which I find kind of odd to be honest; I'm pretty OCD) and even a little Rainbow Dash (uh, I'm loyal?).
It generally reflects me pretty well. I would disagree with the Pinkie Pie evaluation, but I'm sure there's a reason for that! And just because it lists her high doesn't mean I get all of Pinkie's traits -- it could just be her sense of humor. ;)
I got max Twilight, above average Applejack, above average Rarity (what!?) Little bit under with Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash, and zero Fluttershy.

ReplyDeleteI got Twilight Sparkle as the highest. Not really surprising. I've always identified with her more than any other pony, even before I actually considered myself a brony. (Seriously, when I watched the first episode I knew Twi was somepony I could relate to, even if I stopped watching after that.) What can I say? I'm a bookworm. I'm a total egghead.
Huh, I rated second highest with Applejack. Didn't completely expect that. I was actually expecting RD to be there, but ehh... I guess both loyalty and honesty are big with me, when I think about it. RD placed third highest anyway. (Though in the case of both, I really am not that active.)
My lowest was Pinkie Pie. Way below the average there. Again, not much of a surprise. One does not become an egghead by being super social. That and I'm horrible at humor. Can't tell a joke to save my life most of the time. Though I guess I can be random... when I'm hyped up on sugar at least.

Well, as I'm apparently INTP by Myres-Briggs' I suppose I can relate to everyone's favourite student of Celestia.
With a bit of Fluttershy thrown in for good measure, on account of being horribly, horribly introverted.
Does anyone know how this is broken down?
Is it done with each answer gives a +/- score to various Ponies, (ie picking bunny would be +10 to Fluttershy -10 to Rainbow Dash?)? Or does it use another system?

ReplyDeleteSo, I'm Rainbow Dash with some Applejack and a surprising amount of Rarity mixed in. I expected that, seeing how I hate losing and and love to boast about my accomplishments. And apparently, I am not like Pinkie at all in any way :P
Yeah, I admit I did this test. I had some trouble last night getting my chart to load once I finished the questionnaire, so I repeated it just now and got my chart.

This test really sucks. The questions are so irrelevant. For example: what's your favorite number. It never mentions their favorite numbers in the show.

ReplyDeleteThere are always three types of questions in any test or quiz: relevant, irrelevant and control. If a test included only relevant questions it would be laughably easy to cheat into whatever the result you want.

ReplyDeleteI'm not surprised that the overall result was Twilight. I am somewhat surprised at the biases of the other ponies, though. Rarity and Fluttershy tied for second place? That, I did not expect, although it makes sense when I think about it.
