Welcome to the episode followup! This week we got a huge slap in the face made entirely of new canon for Ponyville and the Everfree forest. To some, that might have hurt! For the rest of us it was rather enjoyable. Come along for the ride, and we'll talk about all the neat stuff we saw.
And interesting thing to note here is that (I believe, correct me if I'm wrong) this is one of the few instances where we've seen non-pony controlled weather. Since we learned that this came from the Everfree forest later on, it makes sense. Worth noting, though, that this weather did seem to follow the zap-apple trees out of the forest. Take notes, writers.
And then the pink one showed up again. And started talking. Oh well. At least it wasn't Silver Spoon. Or the bro-ponies.
This is the first time we see the new colt in Cheerilee's class. He's behind Diamond Tiara, and I don't believe he has a name yet. Who wants to name him? I vote for 'Chowder'.
Also apparently the CMC all go to the same school now.

It's not the best map ever, but it does give some basic reference points, if you're interested.
Equestria Daily Top Tip: Granny Smith is voiced by Tabitha St. Germain, the same voice actress who plays Rarity, Luna, and Nightmare Moon.
Apparently Celestia controls land rights within her kingdom. Or maybe she was just acting as a guide in this instance? Hard to tell, and probably nitpicking a little bit.

ReplyDeleteAnd yes, the biggest laugh for me was Great-Granny-Smith's face at her husband swooning over Celestia. Such a great touch to throw in... Kudos to whomever thought of it.
I had assumed the other CMC's had been in the same class since their big concert last year, followed by their field trip together in the opener and their Loopty-Hooping extended recess, but I guess this is the first time they've all been seen at desks (minus the recolored versions that pop up early in the first Apple Bloom episode.) We got the new foal, but I guess Pip doesn't go to their school. Not sure if Snips and Snails showed up or not.

Heart Containers, trinity of races, three cities that can be triangulated from the map and canned evil that pops out of a void. They have fairy lanterns in Canterlot, Rupees practically fall out of bushes and can be dug up if you have a shovel. The hub had a vote about the episode Cutie Mark Chronicles and one of the things about Dashes cutie mark was suspiciously Zelda toned.
Also rabbit ears in this episode? The same thing that boosts Links running speed anyone?
My conspiracy theory goes that they are trying to make a timeline as convoluted as Zelda's is given that Link is always his own grandpa.

ReplyDeleteI was impressed at Silver Spoon this episode. She was the first to clap for Granny instead of waiting to see what Diamond Tiara would do. Go Silver Spoon, be your own pony. Also I agree with thinking her hair was a little bit blond back then but its hard to tell with the sepia.

I liked this episode. The writers seem intent on explaining more about the Ponyverse in season 2, which I really like. Season 1 was mostly about showing us the characters, and now that we have, we get to see the world they live in. It's really cool and fulfilling to see the rest of the world come to light, maybe see some more of the other pony cities later on? I can only hope, I suppose.

1. Say what you will about Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon. They are mighty effective villains. 2. Silver Spoon > Diamond Tiara, because she is slightly nicer. 3. That fat pony in the background really fraked me out. It was like he was staring at me whenever he was on screen. 4. I think this was the first time we saw Princess Celestia in a previous time period. It was weird to see her in the past looking exactly like she does now. I mean, we always knew she aged really slowly (or not at all), but it felt weird to see it in action.

as i was searching for derpy i noticed... and maybe somebody else noticed. that the animators got a tiny bit lazy when making the lines for the zap apple jam. the current ponyvill line is the old ponyville line, but with hats and bonnets removed. you can even see bon bon there... and then in the current ponyville line, the shaded out part in the background are all still wearing hats and bonnets, just thought that was interesting. the search continues.

ReplyDeleteI love the timber wolves myself, and I'm disappointed there's not been any fan art yet to really show them off.
Also, there was no friendship report for "The Show Stoppers" or "The Best Night Ever", in addition to the episodes already named. (There really wasn't one in "Sonic Rainboom" or "A Bird in the Hoof" either, though in those episodes a pony at least gave what amounted to a verbal friendship report to Celestia.)
I'm not entirely sure whether I should take Winter Wrap Up as canon or this episode, honestly.
ReplyDeleteLittle late, but I might as well give my take. Just seems like every episode gets better and better, and this one was no exception. Such a great story line, Granny Smith got plenty of screen time, a great backstory to the begining of Ponyville... Overall, such a good episode. Making it more special for me was that I saw this at BroNYCon. We laughed, we cheered, we booed, and the collective reaction when Apple Bloom chewed out Diamond Tiarra towards the end was just priceless.

I prefer curmudgeonly Granny Smith (like from episodes 4 and 5) to "acts like something from a bad Monty Python sketch" Granny Smith. Watching ponies jump over water pails while reciting the alphabet was painful to watch. I get that that was kind of the point, but it still seemed really stupid to me.

So there was a Granny Apple on the other side of the family at some point, too - maybe she's living wherever the Apple parents are...if they're alive.

ReplyDeleteIf you must reconcile the Ponyville origin in this episode with Twilight's statement in "Winter Wrap Up", probably the simplest thing to do is assume Twilight mis-spoke, and meant to say that Ponyville was founded by earth ponies, and earth ponies had been doing Winter Wrap Up without magic for hundreds of years.

ReplyDeleteAbout property ownership in Equestria - perhaps the arrangement is similar to the system used in that other magical, colorful fantasyland, Oz. In one of the Oz books, it is stated (paraphrased): "All property belonged to the Ruler (Ozma). The people were her children, and she cared for them." (BTW, it was developments like this that made the Oz books very controversial during the 1950's - some folks believed that the above description meant that Oz is a Communist country, even though author L. Frank Baum had inserted a disclaimer: "Dorothy tells me that this arrangement works splendidly for the Oz people, although I don't suppose it would work for us.") So maybe Celestia, as Ruler, owns all land in Equestria, but she parcels select acres out for development to those subjects she deems worthy. It does seem a good way to keep Equestria free of overdevelopment and pollution. Just a thought...

The only reason the new canon about Ponyville hurt was because it retconned previous canon from Winter Wrap Up.

ReplyDeleteI looked it up, it is in fact a valid use of it, it just has negative connotations in today's society. Besides, I thought everypony called Celestia a tyrant, which is why I looked it up. I agree, it's rather harsh to call her a tyrant, but there is literally not a possibility of her being overthrown ever.
Did anyone notice Scootaloo apparently smelling Sweetie Belle's mane during the end of the telescope scene? She leans in really close and grins as the scene ends. It was just a weird bit of animation, I guess, but that's what came to mind.

ReplyDeleteThis episode was awesome! Learned a whole mess of new things, but one item in particular still evades me. Who and/or where are AJ, AB, and Big Mac's mother and father!? Maybe I missed something, but as of yet they have yet to even be mentioned. This mystery is driving me loco in the coco!
ReplyDeleteI'm curious as to whether we'll see more of Filthy Rich now that he's been established. Yeah, he seems okay from this episode, but then he did need what Granny Smith had to offer, so it's possible he was just being savvy in keeping his daughter from offending the Apples.
ReplyDeleteIt's just that having the farm be in financial trouble and threatened to be bought out by some businessman is such a classic trope that I'd be surprised if they can resist using it on MLP. Now we know the big business of Ponyville, it's operator, and that the Apples sell their products through them. And the daughter is already an antagonist, and the father is called "Filthy" be even nice ponies like Cheerilee.
Seems a recipe for future trouble to me.

Granted they aren't as cool as the past three (even if Wendigoes suggest that Cannibolism is canon), but only from this show would we get mythical creatures outside the norm. Hell, we might end up seeing Rocs or something.
Gotta say I love the episodes that show us more about the world, hopefully we'll see more of that in the AJ goes missing ep.

I can recall tons of pony's that were seen during present episodes and during flash backs. I love how "In the dark" the fans are about the age limitations of a pony. To be honest, I also love how upcoming episodes are going to slap fan-fic writers in the face. Oh... how evil I am. Great episode!

ReplyDeleteActually my good sir it was Rainbow Dash that caused ponyville, The same way she caused the mane 6 to get their cutie marks. You see while the mane 6 was traveling with the Doctor, they went back about 200 years before the apple family arrived. While they were there they ran into trouble, but long story short to help in stopping said trouble Rainbow Dash had to do a sonic rainnuke. Doing this released radiation into the near by environment, which was the Everfree Forest, but this was no ordinary radiation it was magical radiation. Over the years this radiation mutated that area and seeing as this magical radiation came from Rainbow Dash it inherited some of her abilities like weather control and at the epicenter of this radiation was a bunch of apple trees and they are the ones where most of her abilities are located such as bring birds home, being super fast, being awesome and radical, her rainbows, and her cutie mark. And this My Little Bronies is why Zap-Apples are rainbow colored and have lighting shaped stems. So literally Rainbow Dash is what holds Equestria together :D

ReplyDeleteI tend to think Granny Smith's mane and tail were off-white or sandy blonde when she was younger; this screen shot would seem to confirm it, given that the bow and lace on her bonnet are lighter than her mane and tail.

Wow. That was seriously an awesome episode. I always enjoy the episodes that have the CMC in them, but they've never reached into my top favorites, you know? Well, thats changed now! This was epic!

(Although there is actually a small difference between the color values, which can be determined using any software with an eyedropper tool.)

Re: Zap Apples and RD's statement about 'rainbows not being known for taste', I think she meant pure, undistilled rainbows. Zap apples are rainbow-colored apples with magical properties.

ReplyDeleteLooking at that map, I'm beginning to think that Equestria is only about 20 miles across. Either that, or ponies can run a lo-o-ong way in a very short time, because Fluttershy's cottage is right on the edge of Everfree and Sweet Apple Acres is pretty far from it (according to Granny Smith's map), but you can clearly hear Fluttershy scream at her cottage from Sweet Apple Acres in "Secret of My Excess" and the others can get there within a few moments.

Well, let's consider this a bit. We're assuming that ponies use a base-10 numerical system like us. We use a base-10 system because we have 10 fingers. Ponies do not have fingers; they have 4 hooves. It would make more sense for ponies to use a base-8 system. 100 in base-8 is 64 in base-10.

ReplyDeleteYeah, you just showed why the whole canon vs. fanon thing is pretty funny when it comes to FIM - at the end of the day, IT IS A KID'S SHOW, not Game of Thrones. Equestria's canon geography and history was never gonna be as intricate and well thought-out as say, Westeros or Middle Earth or the Mass Effect galaxy. So if you're writing a fanfic with a cool alternate history or geography or whatever, Keep Calm And Canter On.

ReplyDeletethis one is easy to explain. they have been celebrating the Summer festival for the last 100 years, it started in Canterlot of course one would have to assume, and THEN the ponies that decided to stay (some from Canterlot even) also brought with them their own traditions.
So Ponyville could be like 50ish years old? O.o and we still don't know what one year is compared to human years. not even sure if they scale age with human world ponies where I think 1 year is roughly 8? development wise that equals like 6 human development.
So yeah far as how Equestrian ponies mature that is a whole different ball game.

ReplyDeleteOkay, there may not be a Derpy sighting, but I can't believe nopony else has picked up on the second Doctor Whooves sighting. Technically, though, I guess it is the THIRD Doctor. The blue unicorn in the red coat from Sweet and Elite can be seen on the far left of the very end of Granny Smith's flashback. Harder to recognize due to sepia tone, but I am almost positive it is him.

ReplyDeleteAnyways, I don't see continuity in regards to the whole Winter Wrap-Up vs Family Appreciation Day thing being broken. As I had said in a previous thread, I suspect Twilight's research into Ponyville's history to be faulty and suspect. This is mainly due to the several factors that support Smith's version of the tale, namely a possible supporting account from the Rich family (Filthy, and if he's still alive, Stinking), and that Cheerilee didn't interject into Smith's tale to question or correct historical inconsistencies (of course, this being a kid's show on a time table, that could've just been left out for any number of reasons). Ultimately, even though Smith's antics this episode paint her in a rather senile light, she herself admits how silly and ridiculous some (read: most) of the rituals for the zap apples are, leading me to believe she's still got it together up there. That is to say, she's a more reliable narrator for history than Pinkie Pie.
The tl; dr version: Twilight sucks at looking up historical geographic data. She needs to stick to what she knows, apparently.
Nice to see I'm not the only one who noticed the weather either followed or was attracted by the Zap Apples.
