• Family Appreciation Day - Episode Followup

And then Granny Smith was a real character.

Welcome to the episode followup! This week we got a huge slap in the face made entirely of new canon for Ponyville and the Everfree forest. To some, that might have hurt! For the rest of us it was rather enjoyable. Come along for the ride, and we'll talk about all the neat stuff we saw.

And interesting thing to note here is that (I believe, correct me if I'm wrong) this is one of the few instances where we've seen non-pony controlled weather. Since we learned that this came from the Everfree forest later on, it makes sense. Worth noting, though, that this weather did seem to follow the zap-apple trees out of the forest. Take notes, writers.

And then the pink one showed up again. And started talking. Oh well. At least it wasn't Silver Spoon. Or the bro-ponies.

This is the first time we see the new colt in Cheerilee's class. He's behind Diamond Tiara, and I don't believe he has a name yet. Who wants to name him? I vote for 'Chowder'.

Also apparently the CMC all go to the same school now.

    RAINBOWS EVERYWHERE

It's not the best map ever, but it does give some basic reference points, if you're interested.

Equestria Daily Top Tip: Granny Smith is voiced by Tabitha St. Germain, the same voice actress who plays Rarity, Luna, and Nightmare Moon.

Apparently Celestia controls land rights within her kingdom. Or maybe she was just acting as a guide in this instance? Hard to tell, and probably nitpicking a little bit.

I laughed far harder than was necessary at this scene.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who just noticed that the stem was a lightning bolt.

    Now I feel silly.

And finally, Scootaloo explaining the finer points of how big it was while Applebloom takes a nap.

And now, some fun things from the community!

Unfortunately I don't believe there was a Derpy sighting in this episode! Let me know if I just totally missed her, though. There were a lot of ponies in those flashback sequences.

That's all for this followup. Take care, ponies!

    1. I loved this episode, we got more information on not only a main's family, but Equestria, Ponyville's founding, tons of CMC shenanigans, a new species in the Everfree forest and a new food.

This isn't the lesson zero humor I like, but it's CMC humor and lately I have found that they are funnier the longer I watch this show, overall, Loved this episode =D

    2. I noticed a interesting bit of foreshadowing about Granny Smith's relationship with Stinky Rich: When Flithy and Granny leave Applebloom and Diamond Tiara alone, you can hear Granny ask Flithy how his "Pappy" is doing. She says it in a way that implies that they knew each other for a very long time.

I kinda like Sliver Spoon after this one. Not only after the moment in class but when Applebloom is hiding from them in the market, Sliver Spoon looks like she is enjoying herself while Diamond Tiara has this big frown on her face. Seriously, Diamond Tiara has this evil look on her face every time she is on screen. Just look at her face when she is waving to Applebloom at the market.

    3. There wasn't derpy in the episode, but in the olde time flashback you do see Bon-Bon in it, hard to see her though.

    4. ...uh, I'm pretty sure the CMC have always been in the same school/class. I mean, in the episode where Applebloom first meets Scoot and Sweetie, Applebloom says something along the lines of "I thought I was the only one in my class without one!"

      ReplyDelete
    5. @FordDoes that also explain why the clock in Season 1's 'A Bird in the Hoof' shows only eight hours (i.e. 16 hours a day)?

      ReplyDelete
    6. I also noticed the Zap-Apples had lighting stems! :D But no mention of Apple Bloom in a bunny suit? Still, Solder Smith happened and I'm glad I predicted it.

On the off chance someone will read this, can somebrony help me out? The Apple family making their home near a forest reminded me of a movie I never saw. It was about these old fashioned people and their village was near a forest, there were creatures living in the forest and because of them the people never went into the forest. The twist at the end was that it takes place in present time. Anybrony know what I'm talking about?

    7. I noticed the lighting steams and damn I wants me some zap apples *cries* also I think young Granny Smith is blonde as well. Going by deviantart I'm not the only filly or brony who thinks this.

    8. I missed it. I so glad watch it on youtube.

    9. So. The Name was Chaeoweler. I vote it

    10. The new colt looks disturbing - like the baby pony did.
I also found weird how the zap-apples are rainbow coloured as opposed to... mana coloured. Or that, indeed, the thunder striking them isn't controlled by pegasi. It's kind of illogical.
Pretty much everything else was awesome.

    11. @Rohit EligetiI was going to change her mane color (I've made this vextor above and one guy is already unfiltering picture for me to determine actual color), but now I will leave it as big middle finger for You, good sir.

Actually, the map is misleading. If you look close, you can see the farm marked on the left/western eege of the map. The forest may be marked due south of canterlot, but it. Clearly loops around ti the south and west of ponyville

      ReplyDelete
    13. On the subject of communistical vs feudal serfdom, there is a third way. What if Celestia had something like an Equestrian Homestead act and sold the Apple family the land? For pennies on the bit, but still a sale.

As for no Derpy, It's just as entertinaing looking for her even if you don't find her. Keeps up the suspense.

      ReplyDelete
    14. AHHH! That blog is awesome, James Corck. And I see I'm not the only one who remembers Knightmare. To this day I still don't know how they did the virtual reality sequences.

      ReplyDelete
    15. So basically...Granny Smith is a complete BAMF

      ReplyDelete
    16. @Lucky Stampede

Yeah, I also just noticed how the forest loops around the entire bottom of the map. Okay, so Sweet Apple Acres is also right on the edge of Everfree, so I guess we can conclude that Fluttershy's cottage is fairly close by, as well. I suppose this means that Everfree marks the southern border of Equestria, since I can't imagine that you'd have such a wild and dangerous place surrounded by safely inhabitable areas.

Oh, and I just realized: this is only the second time we've had actual English writing show up in an episode (The only other case being "Welcome, Celest" in "Swarm of the Century"). Am I the only one here who misses that first season gibberish writing, with all the crescent moons and unicorn heads?

    17. I'd like to call the new colt Truffles.

    18. @Vismund Cygnus-Dash

Nope, AB didn't know the others till she met them at the party. She said that she thought she was the only one "here" (i.e. At the Cuteceñera party) who didn't have her cutie mark yet. If you check back to the first scene of "Call of the Cutie," there are 9 desks in AB's class, and neither Sweetie Bell nor Scootaloo were seated at any of them. They made it clear that Twist was the only other girl in her class who hadn't gotten her mark yet, which jibes with AB not knowing either of the other two CMC members at the party. I think we can conclude that there must either be another school in town (doubtful) or that other groups of children are taught in the school on a staggered schedule (Since I doubt there are only 9 school age children in all of Ponyville, but there's just a one-room schoolhouse with one teacher to service them all)

Conclusion: they probably got themselves transferred into the same class at some point so that they could all be together. Also, ponies are terrible when it comes to efficient models of schooling.

    19. @StarStep

You noticed that too? That last part actually made me hope that Silver Spoon might get some character development, perhaps not be so rough to the CMC, and maybe an entire episode could be devoted to a scenerio where she somehow ends up being nice to the CMC, but has to hide it from Demon Tiara. She could end up writing a letter to the princess, and that's when she realizes that the philly she's been making fun of actually HAS connections to the princess. Just think of the hidden potential Silver Spoony has.

    20. I was going to support chowder, but the fiance thought of "Jelly Roll" and i can't be mad at that.

      ReplyDelete
    21. I believe Ponibooru already named the grey kid "Russell".
His cutie mark is cutlery so they assumed he was a food critic of some description, so "Russell up some grub" became his name.

      ReplyDelete
    22. I really enjoyed this episode. A fulfilling story with a touching ending. Always love to see a bit more of the ponyverse and the story behind it all :)

    23. @Harwick Pip came from Trottingham, so I assume he may go to school there.

    24. @DrNazus

You seem to be describing M. Night Shyamalan's "The Village".

      @Don't Call Me Brony (Please)

Are you sure neither Sweetie Belle or Scootaloo was seated at either of them?

Reality was obviously warping that day. Probably Pinkie's fault... it'd explain the blue, wingless Scootaloo too.

      ReplyDelete
    25. @Mist Skye

Didn't Twilight say he "moved here from Trottingham"? So I had assumed we'd be seeing Pip again from time to time.

Either there are other classrooms in that building, or the classes are staggered or something because students appear, disappear and reappear quite a bit from Cheerilee's class.

    26. Points of note:
      ---

The Apple Family didn't help found Ponyville until young Granny Smith (Filly Smith?) discovered the Zapapples when she was around the age of the Mane Six, only two generations back.

... and yet, in Winter-Wrap-Up, Twilight says that the Earth Ponies of Ponyville had been doing it without magic the traditional way for "Hundreds of Years".

      Explain.

      ---

The city of Canterlot was seen on a separate mountain peak NEAR, but not directly connected to the Royal Palace in the flashback. Yet, when Rarity visited Canterlot, she stayed in a room IN the Palace itself, which seems a little bit inconvenient ... unless the entire city of Canterlot MOVED since back then ... or Canterlot has it's own Palace separate from the actual ROYAL palace which is hanging from the mountainside. The structure the ponies entered in the Hearths Warming Eve episode bore more resemblance to the city seen in Granny's flashback than the hanging city, yet they clearly were in a Royal hallway when putting on the play, with all the stained glass windows along the halls.

      Thoughts?

      ---

In "Over a Barrel", the Train was not Self-Propelled (in spite of having a smoke stack), but was in fact PONY Powered. The Blue train in the Season Two intro, and the Pink train that took them all to Canterlot in Hearth's Warming Eve are both Self Propelled. New innovation? ... not if you account for the self propelled steam train ALSO present in Granny's flashback. So why then was the Appleoosa train Pony Powered??

      Ideas?

      ---

iTunes seems to be confused about Episode order, as the latest episode that just went up this morning (48 hours after original air date) is listed as #11, but Hearths Warming Eve is ALSO listed as episode #11. I seem to recall there being some discrepancy about episode orders in channel guide leaks as well. Not sure what to make of it at this point. Maybe just a glitch ... or maybe HWE was intentionally aired early, in spite of actually being later in the official ordering.

      ---

I have searched high and low in every window, door, shadow, and inspecting every single background pony in both the present and in the flashbacks ... and while I noticed that they reused the same ponies for the Zapapple jam line in both past and present, right down to the colt with the wagon-wheel cutie mark, and you can even see the shadows leading off into the distance are still wearing bonnets and stuff in the present, even though those accessories were removed from the closer ponies ... it seems that Studio-B has tired of playing "Spot Derpy" with us, as I can't find her anywhere (excluding the intro train-window cameo, which doesn't count).

That makes me sad. I really liked the "Spot Derpy" game.

      ---

As for the new colt ... I suggest "Munch" or "Munchie", as naming him after established characters like "Chowder" or "Russel" seems like a bad idea to me.

      ReplyDelete
    27. I want to name him Rustle Up because he reminds of Russell from Up plus I bet he could rustle up some grub.

      ReplyDelete
    28. I'd been thinking of the little chubby pony as Puppydog Tails, to match Snips and Snails.

      ReplyDelete
    29. I vote for "Cookie Dough" for the name of the munching pony behind Diamond Tiara. ^_^

      ReplyDelete
    30. I thought the little fat colt was already named Russel from the movie "Up"

      ReplyDelete
    31. This was all the history of Granny Smith's glorious days in a nutshell. To get it understanding!!! ^_^

      ReplyDelete
    32. Diamond Tiara's father is Peter Gallagher? And Granny Smith wasn't born an Apple, but married into the family? Neat.

It'd be funny if Rainbow Dash was allergic to Zap Apples.

      ReplyDelete
    33. Diamond Tiara might be thee archetypal high school bitch, but she has the best colour scheme.

      ReplyDelete
    34. Anypony else notice how when the Zapapples bloomed and turned square it looked like Chao Fruit?

      ReplyDelete
    35. @pmcollectorboy

You're probably right. If you watch Rarity's flashback in "Cutie Mark Chronicles," both filly Cheerilee and filly Mayor are performers in the school play.

I really liked the Timberwolves too! I forsee that they shalt overrun many a fanfic pretty darn soon!

Timberwolf/Longlegged bunny shipping? Hmm... might that be to really milk the concept of ship-fics to its very last drop?

    39. @Omega_code

OH but she sure does look pretty old and bears many symptoms of a really old pers...pony. White hair, aching joints, seems to be having a slight touch of Alzheimers. A human with all those characteristics ought to be somewhere in her 85-90's. And perhaps Ponyville's just 95 years old? I'd say it's about right. =)

      ReplyDelete
    40. @Gryffinz Yes I also notice the lack of friendship report in these two episodes, i don't know you guys but i will become psycho like Pinkie in Party of One if there isn't one FR in the next episode.

      ReplyDelete
    41. @Altherix The Zap apples doesn't necessarily taste sweet, for what other reason Granny Smith have to do that complicated method to prepare Zap apple jam.

      ReplyDelete
    42. Anyone notice time traveling Daisy?

      ReplyDelete
    43. Lol. Jealous pony. I loved that. I definitely vote Russel for the new pony's name. And...I now believe that if AJ and RD have a kid, said kid's cutie mark would be a Zap Apple.

    44. I liked this episode but where was everyone, they didn't even cross in the background.
Were they busy? If so doing what? I went ahead and asked around and got some answers
Rarity: I was busy with a contract...for a dress (wipes blood off hidden blade)
Twilight: Training in the ways of the force
Pinkie: The covenant were moving in on a tactical position, i had to step in
Fluttershy: Well i had to stop Shang Tsung or he would get to invade equestria realm
Rainbowdash: Zombie outbreak in a little place called raccoon city
And that's what they were busy doing

    50. Ok, so much stuff to address!

First: Equestria isn't just that little map. It also includes the cities of Manehatten, Trottingham, and Fillydelphia which are quite clearly farther away. Secondly, I don't knoww why people automatically assume a leader having control over all the land is communist. Monoarchies have held that power for thousands of years in our world, long before communism was even a fart in Marx' mind. If anything, Equestria would be more like the Egyptian ruling system, with a (real in Equestria's case) god-ruler on top who has absolute authority. Celestia would be kinda like the wise and benevolent Pharoah whom Joseph met, and Ponyville would be like the land of Goshen. :D
Third: I vote Chunk for pudgy pony's name. I too am an old-school Goonies fan. Fourth: I am curently endeavoring to create zap apples in our genetics lab. The difficulty is intrisically energizing the electron shell configuration within the subatomic structure of the aple molecules, and inducing a harmonic subfrequency generation upon exposure to archane energy. The closest I've come so far is apples that turn plaid. Fifth: Granny Smith could be 85-90, if ponies tend to marry late because of how peaceful the land is (no rush into childbearing). That's around 100 years for Ponyville's existence. Sixth: Numerical systems do not depend on number of digits in a hand. Many older systems based numerical systems off calendars or relative values of silver vs gold rather than any particular factoring. And what about Britain's centuries-old monetary system, which is quite complicated indeed (farthings, pence, shillings, pounds, crowns and so forth)? Then there's the old 12-inch foot and all the complexities of the measuring system before metrics. The standardization of base 10 worldwide is a modern development. It just makes calculations much easier on the brain, and simplifies many aspects of international trade, technology, and scheduling to have everyone on the same page.

    55. “Apparently Celestia controls land rights within her kingdom. Or maybe she was just acting as a guide in this instance?”

A lot depends on whether Equestria has a peerage (nobility). Apparently the original world-building called for it—recall the duke who became a prince in the course of series development. The noble holding a fief would have the power to grant land within that fief.

On the other hand, the land in question may have been royal land, or even land not yet within the borders of Equestria, but not claimed by another polity (which is likely given that it originally was part of the Everfree Forest). In either case, Celestia would be within her legal authority to convey a land grant and possibly even a town charter.
