    5. Welp, maybe it's time to reinstall Oblivion. Never thought I'd say that, to be honest.

If we could get a mod with a Nightmare Moon lookalike which also alters the infamous 'horse armor' to look like Nightmare Moon's I'd be sold.

    9. Well, there's your Sweetie Bell. lol Not even a title for this Nightly Roundup. o.O

Pinkie Pie Oblivion mod is pretty cool. Though I haven't played that game in ages now. Still, nice.

Those Cutie Mark cupcakes are some of the nicest, most delicious-looking pastries I have ever seen. They are a work of art. And now I'm seriously hungry for cupcakes.

The Poland Can Pony, Too video was fun and amusing to listen to. Also catchy in some parts. Was rockin a little to some parts. :P Indeed. They can pony too. <3

Certainly looks like a MLP blanket in that Ugly Americans pic. Though kinda looks past gen too. Though whats interesting is that they'd use it right now. Could be a fun little shout out.

And yay, pony currency. I should be on the $1000 bill. ;)

I imagine Big Mac would be the slow, strong type. I suppose he'd own if you were good with that type of fighter. Me, I dominate with quick characters.

Also, regarding the linked article, I've never heard the term 'pegasister,' but it's kinda neat.

      ReplyDelete
    15. That article...Feels bad pony.
Now, I agree with equal rights for both genders, so don't hate on me for that reason, but it seems... overly feminist. Take this quote for example: "Female fans are squeezed from the frame as objects worthy of consideration of their own. Some have proposed the male-centric term “brony” be applied to applied to all adult MLP fans, an unreflexive marking of the male as universal. This is indicative of a broader claiming of the text as normatively the domain of men"
      ...
      What?
I've always considered "Brony" to mean "Any fan of the show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic". Not "Any male fans of the show, because males own this show".

Maybe I'm over thinking this. Maybe I've known too many of the "bad" kind of feminists (You know, the ones that get stereotyped on television).

Wow, that was more of a rant then I'd hoped for. Sorry, Bronies.

      ReplyDelete
    16. I'm the Ugly "Amrican" that captured the screenshot. I laughed my plot off! When I saw that. Also, poor sleep deprived Sethisto... Amrican and non Amrican bronies love your dedication to the cause. ;D

    19. AppleJack's bill should be worth 999
You also need a rarity one worth 999

      ReplyDelete
    20. @Select Few
You forgot the rest of that paragraph: "Ironically, of course, the bronies’ own behaviour en masse in the fandom reinforces the same old male-centre/female-margin dynamic, as does much of the media coverage. Female fans are squeezed from the frame as objects worthy of consideration of their own. Some have proposed the male-centric term “brony” be applied to applied to all adult MLP fans, an unreflexive marking of the male as universal. This is indicative of a broader claiming of the text as normatively the domain of men, a far from unique dynamic in fandom – just one of a million reasons why a feminist narrative like MLP:FiM is still so sorely needed by girls and women."

Feminism isn't just about equal rights, it's about eliminating prejudice against ALL genders (not just one or two of them). Honestly, the fact that you think something is "too feminist" is a signal of your ignorance of the subject.

      ReplyDelete
    21. For the article. I'm just going to say I'm female, and I also thought the article was over-feminist. Its putting down one extreme to make space for it's own extreme. As it's said: Two wrongs, don't make a right.

      ReplyDelete
    22. Yay! I got my day! But how could you forget that I asked about my own day?

    24. Not happy with the feminist article. Nothing like misinterpreting everything to push your own hate agenda on the world. Learn to be friends or take it to the moon.

      ReplyDelete
    25. The brony money looks cool but were could you use it? We are still at least a year and half away from being able to set up our own country. It could be used at meetups but the exchange rate would be horrible.

      ReplyDelete
    26. It was Sweetie Belle who suggested she had a day, and with the support of one brony, it worked!

    32. Seeing cutie mark cupcakes is not a very good sight after looking at stuff related to the cupcakes fanfic. . .

Even if they look really good

      ReplyDelete
    33. I agree that the article's interpretation of the word "brony" was extreme... And really, you could argue it going the other way. You could say making separate terms for female fans encourages unfair separation of the sexes, whereas calling everyone "brony" means that you're saying that you're willing to say that a girl can be your bro as much as a guy can. Maybe more so!

Aside from that bit, though, I thought the article made some decent points on why the show is good for girls and guys alike. I would like to see someone make an in-depth analysis on MLP from the feminist perspective, you know, really dig into each character and episode and discuss what each one means for gender roles and the like. This particular article didn't really do that, but hopefully this article and others like it will make more people take the topic into consideration.

      ReplyDelete

    36. @Empyrean Panic
I consider myself a feminist; I believe that men and women should have equal rights, and that society should not be biased against either gender. However, I believe there are some out there who do misuse the term 'feminism' to justify animosity or prejudice against the male gender (not talking about the author of that article).

'Too feminist' may not be the correct term, but I think there are indeed those out there who distort the very concept of feminism into one which is actually at odds with its true definition.

      ReplyDelete
    37. I love these round-ups. Still waiting for a Norwegian brony meet-up though...

Anyhow! "Fics still awaiting feedback: 15"

    39. Wow, a Polish PMV makes it to Nightly Roundup? That's new. It's certainly a very good PMV, it's a pity that few will understand it. My favorite part was Rainbow Six intro (never knew they make such pompous speeches for tactical FPSs).

As for the article, I think the author may actually be somewhat right. Brony originated as referring only to male fans, then was generalised when no satisfying term for female fans was coined (pegasisters... don't be ridiculous).
And it's kinda like that, the first image that comes to mind when bronies are mentioned is "those adult men who inappropriately enjoy little girls' cartoon". It may have more to do with the nature of the show than fandom, but still, the generalisation, even if there's nothing wrong with it in itself, is kinda unreflexive and painting the fandom as a male thing.

Uh, please don't shout at me for saying that?

      ReplyDelete
    40. @StyxD

It's a valid point, and I'd be down with a more unisex-sounding term for the fandom, I'm just not sure how we would manage to top "brony" in terms of wordplay, conciseness, and implications of bonding between fans. (Not to mention that it would be difficult to replace "brony" as the most widely used term anyway, at this point.)

      ReplyDelete
    41. Okay folks, Ft. Scott Kansas meetup. I live just a hop skip and a jump down the road, but I can't really get there on my own. If anyone knows of the little ol town of Pittsburg KS, COME GET ME!!!

      ReplyDelete
    42. Heh, glad I wasn't the only one who noticed that blanket in Ugly Americans.

      ReplyDelete
    43. The article did bother me a bit upon taking issue with the brony name. Yes, there's the obvious "bro+pony" part, but a solid part of that came from /b/. I've also yet to hear a decent female version. A filly is a young female pony (think CMC here), so that's essentially calling them children, and calling any woman a mare is unlikely to be handled well. Hell, I haven't even heard the term "pegasister" before.

Also, those cupcakes look really good. That might be the lack of my eating breakfast yet, but still. Not even The-Fic-That-Must-Not-Be-Named couldn't ruin those.

Last thing: where can I get this Applejack money and what is it worth?

      ReplyDelete
    44. looks a little G3.5 to me (the ugly americans blanket), those cupcakes....DO WANT NOW

    45. Ugly Americans is back on the air?!?!?!?!?!

      ReplyDelete
    46. Ok, im from Poland, and its really awesome to see a Polish PMV get to EqD. Its a good one to, lots of the voices in the PMV are from "old mobies". That brings memories...

      ReplyDelete
    47. About the Ugly American thing: Kinda seems like Seth sometimes forgets that the previous gens on MLP are infamous for being random little girl toys with no meaning.
I doubt it was a shoutout, just ponies.

Lots of meet ups and facebook pages.

      ReplyDelete
    48. Why is there RD and somebody else in the Applejack money?

      ReplyDelete
    49. I'm a 31 year old woman who didn't find FiM until after the season was over. When I first heard the word "brony" I assumed, because of the "bro" in the word, that it was a term for male fans. At the time, media stories about bronies were starting to circulate, highlighting the unexpected male viewership of the show; that seemed like further proof that brony was a term for older male fans exclusively. Now that I've hung around the fandom for a bit, I know differently. I'm proud to call myself a brony. But you have to admit, to the uninitiated who don't know about the /b/ origins of the term (and the author did a grave disservice by not bothering to explain something even Know Your Meme has a video about), "bro" = dudes.

I disagree with the idea that male fans try to push female fans out and take ownership of the series. That hasn't been my experience at all.

To conclude, damn, those cupcakes look really good.

      ReplyDelete
    50. anyone else think that Sweetie Belle image is a little creepy? with the red eyes and rapeface?

that feminist article is terrible. not only did they try to put a battle of the sexes spin on the show, they didn't even get their information right! five main characters? really?!

      anyways
      >cutie mark cupcakes
      nooooooooooo the horror

      ReplyDelete
    51. When I read that feminist article, I didn't panic. If women can be referred to as bronies too, then I hereby declare that men can be referred to as pegasisters too! Silly? Don't worry! We'll always be together!

      ReplyDelete
    52. @Scootachicken

Ugly Americans has pulled two pony references this season. In the episode "Callie and Her Sister", Twaine Boneraper is told to think of something that makes him happy. He starts chanting ponies, ponies, ponies, ponies.

Now the blanket in episode "Lilly and the Beast"

Regardless of the artistic styling, I'm pretty sure someone calling the shots in adding these details is acutely aware of the current surge of pony awesomeness in the world. I'd find it hard to believe that there aren't any bronies in those offices.

Another point to mention, both references have revolved around leading male characters.

      ReplyDelete
    53. Okay, two thoughts.

First: the author of that feminist article must be looking for a fight. Her issues with the "brony" term and her general conclusions about the show's relation to feminism were overblown and mildly offensive. I didn't comment on it, because others have stepped up and called her out, but I really didn't enjoy it.

Second: That Applejack money... it has Rainbow Dash and her crazy want face... that made me laugh. :D

      ReplyDelete

      ReplyDelete
    58. @richfiles

Oh well, I've never actually watched the show.
It could quite possibly be a brony reference, it just seems like sometime people jump on it every single time someone says My Little Pony.
My Little Pony is VERY popular with little girls, I'd say 1/5 (Random estimate) of the people who know about MLP know about bronies.

Didn't even notice the feminist article.
I'd say the writer was trollin' I've honestly never seen anybody who wasn't a troll say that only men can be bronies, that's just ridiculous.
How in the world could a brony be sexist?
      Laura Faust is a woman.
The article is way out of line.

Also, just saw that episode of Ugly Americans this morning. A truly entertaining show, and an awesome reference I feel bad missing. It would make total sense if Mark Lily was a brony.

      ReplyDelete
    67. As a female and a feminist, I understand some of what feminist writers say about bronies "taking over MLP-" or, at least, I understand the fear that it might happen. Because as much as I, as an adult fan, ship the hay out of these ponies and am amused by fics or art with more grown-up humor or dramatic content- I don't want there to be any sort of fanservice to us adult fans, male or female, in a show that really does have strong lessons for modern-day girls about what it does and does not mean to be a young female growing up in 2011. There really is so much media out there for the male demographic that when something positive for girls aged 5-12, with well-written, diverse and well-developed female characters, emerges.. I can see why some people flinch when men begin talking about what they want the show to become.

That said- I think it's selfish and limiting for people to say that men don't belong in this fandom, or are actively trying to take it over. I haven't seen evidence, personally, of male fans trying to marginalize female fans at all, or seriously believing that the show itself will change in content to flirt with a more mature audience. Moreover, male fans of a show created by a female, featuring independent, strong female characters seem more symptomatic of positive gender politics than sexism to me. =X Call me naive.

As for 'brony'- I like it, myself. Sure, it originally meant a male fan- but I'm confident enough in my femininity to identify with a term originally coined to mean a male confident enough in his masculinity to carry around a Twilight Sparkle tote bag. =)

      ReplyDelete
    68. One more point in support of the Ugly Americans pony shout outs as that season 1 (produced before the FiM phenomenon would have had time to take root) has NO pony references that I'm aware of recalling. MLP has been around for a long time. Only in the second season are these popping up. I'd say it was triggered by... Oh, something. :D
