That crazy battlemaster Luna!
I've turned Anon commenting off for the time being. My suggestion to all of you who use it primarily: create a Blogger.com account. That's the best way to sync with EQD at least. There are 6 other options in the comment dropdown menu to also use.
I might enable it again in the future, but for now tension is pretty high with the copyright thing.

uhm, real anons know/will learn how to work around this. i understand the need for it, looking at recent comments, and actually agree but ... i don't like posting under my name. i don't know why, i just don't. maybe because i feel like i can be more honest without a name attached to any particular post so each is read as a separate entity without the stigma from earlier posts to taint them and without a 'history' behind my posts, i can be read as-is and not as 'minalkra' would be expected to post?
ReplyDeleteyeah, that's about the best reason i can think of. i'm sorry ...
@Icehawk
ReplyDeletedo stories count? cause Fallout: Equestria broke 3,000
Oh wow. I have to say it's refreshing to read a wall of comments with no unpleasantries in sight. Much better.
ReplyDeleteHowever Anonymous posting is actually kind of crucial as far as features go - for many different reasons - but it does have a nasty habit of encouraging people to be even less concerned about what they say.
Only if there was a way to let people know they should be a little more careful about what they say.
So...it seems this will just cause an influx of samefriends.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit while im not in complete agreement with Titanium I am sympathetic to him and do agree that the fandom has gone down a bit in the last few months, at least as far as the chan's are concerned which is why I don't go to them anymore.
ReplyDelete@Bronode
ReplyDeleteI ignored the elitist comment because I've seen it over and over again by people who get upset when they don't get their way. I also don't see our fandom as elitist.
@IkusaGT
True but a mob mentality or hive mind is more a sign of human nature than any one fandoms nature.
Testing....
ReplyDeleteOk, minor inconvenience, but still understandable
@Minalkra
ReplyDeleteI doubt that'll happen. I've been posting under Bronode for months, so I should be notorious around here, right?
I'm betting you can't even remember seeing me before, let alone form an opinion of me based on my previous posts.
@Brevity
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't count the stories as they keep getting bumped with updates. I meant just typical news type posts.
This is awesome i think everyone was getting sick of all the trolls.
ReplyDeleteI for one am glad to see most of the douchebaggery go the way of the dodo. -Q.
ReplyDelete@Mecha-kraken
ReplyDeleteA Mecha-kraken? Sounds badass. :)
@Bryan
ReplyDeleteAll platforms reporting in from low orbit, systems are fully nominal and operating at maximum capacity.
Seth, we are waiting for the go-ahead to launch Operation Tolerance. Repeat, all platforms are standing by and waiting for the green-light to initiate the HARMONY protocol.
It's your call, sir.
@Fire.Esper I'm eating my words right now.
ReplyDeleteUm. Maybe it's not that effective after all. Not unless you also want to introduce moderation, which is a big can of worms all on its own.
@Pinkie Pie
ReplyDeletePinkie you should throw Seth a party. Cause he totally deserves one !
Testing... it's REALLY not liking my Google Account. :\
ReplyDeleteModeration on comments on EQD? that's not gonna happen
ReplyDelete@Cedric Bale
ReplyDeleteThere it goes! Took me about 5 tries to get it to post my dang comment.
I see where the anonymous supporters are coming from. Sometimes you want to just make a quick little irrelevant comment without hurting your named account's reputation. And that's what I think this is about. With anons, people didn't have to care what other's thought of them, which can be both good and bad. Without anons now, people have continuous names that people will learn to recognise and respond to appropriately. Which is, once again, both good and bad.
ReplyDeleteAnd for those people claiming anonymity was the building block of this community: I'm not going to pretend I was around for the 4chan side of things, so I don't know how things went down. But consider this, once our building blocks were big slabs of stone. Now we don't use stone exclusively. Building blocks can change over time, is it really important to hold onto some relic of the past?
I don't actually mind either way if anon commenting comes back or not, just wanted to say my piece.
Hey guys... yknow... anoning is disabled...WOW, BIG DEAL... oH gOd HoW WiLl i eVeR cOmMeNt hErE?!?!
ReplyDeleteThis website does for us a lot of things! The least we can do is make ONE SIMPLE FRIKKIN BLOGGER ACCOUNT. (or twelve)
Another thing is that, ya, disabling anon comments won't do anything. Well, it won't do anything bad either.
This isn't going to stop anyone from doing something they REALLY want to do. Ok? It's fine. Everything's fine.
Suddenly I feel like I just overreacted over, what, only 50 people's opinion. uhh...k.
Sounding like a Broken record now but.. He said it was only for the time being.
ReplyDelete@Bronode
ReplyDeleteSo if you finally understand, can someone please call a friggin ambulance?!
Anon commenting was kind of a bad idea to begin with, due to all the haters.
ReplyDelete@SIaanme
ReplyDelete"But consider this, once our building blocks were big slabs of stone. Now we don't use stone exclusively. Building blocks can change over time, is it really important to hold onto some relic of the past?"
I may love you a little for this. This logic/argument applies to SO MANY other topics. I won't dare name them since they tend to be controversial, but an excellent point nevertheless. *brohoof*
@Cedric Bale I've come to find blogger absolutely hates IE, back to Google Chrome.
ReplyDeleteThere's actually quite a few good points critics are bringing up about this. Personally, I honestly don't care either way, I started posting Anonymous because I didn't know how to fill in a name, then name now this.
Personally don't really care, like the blog enough I went through the steps anyway so I could still post.
testing*
ReplyDeleteDON'T USE INTERNET EXPLORER GODDAMNIT.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDelete@Cameron
ReplyDeleteThis Idea that "If someone can't even do that, then I think they shouldn't be saying anything." is the only problem I have with this.
It means that this change says "YOU There! You are not worthy of speaking here. Now go away!"
which is the opposite of the spirit which I think this site should have
Ok, fine, I'll be official for now on.
ReplyDeleteI always used the same name anyway when I was on, so I guess it doesn't hurt. This has been a day of learning experiences. I learned getting an account wasn't as hard or time consuming as I figured.
... and Sethisto learned how a poorly worded article can stir up a firestorm :P. Gotta be a bit more journalistic in those posts there.
@Luna
ReplyDeleteI believe I owe you a few hugs then, don't I? *hugs*
Does anypony seriously think this is going to stop any trolls from posting?
ReplyDeletebecause it won't, trolls can make fake users you know.
oh, Luna...
ReplyDeleteI already had one. >:D
ReplyDelete@Vegetalss4
ReplyDeleteNot completely, but it will make it a hell of a lot easier to deal with them. They can be flagged and banned just like any other message board now.
I was checking out ManloMarseilles´s YouTube channel and found this username: Ugurcan2452
ReplyDeleteLooking at his channel i found out that he is a bronie hater. I think that he is the one who flagged those videos.
Okay, well, first I was Anonymous, because I didn't particularly care about being recognized as "part of things". Then, since I started commenting semi-regularly and ultra-lengthily on a few stories, I started Name/URL'ing as Overlong Analysis Anon, to differentiate myself from the other Anons offering analysis.
ReplyDeleteNow I'm Overlong Analysis Cobalt for the near future. /shrug Making the account was easy enough. Being OCD enough to make an avatar was... substantially more annoying. Still, I'm hesitantly supportive of the change: the trolling was getting a bit overboard with the racism and that. It actually made me miss Dave Mustaine's faux-cynicism.
Testing...
ReplyDelete@Dr. Henry Killinger I've never understood why having a lot of comments, good discussion comments, is a bad thing on a blog.
ReplyDeleteIf anything it's why you should be posting anyway, because you want interaction with other people. More comments, more interaction, although trolling has always seemed like the six year old jumping up and down wanting attention.
once more...
ReplyDelete@Mojo
ReplyDeleteHow about "No"?
@Overlong Analysis Cobalt
ReplyDeleteWhatever happened to our favorite cynical brony anyway?
@Party Favors Heard he's gotten a job and can only comment on the weekends
ReplyDelete@Altherix
ReplyDeleteAgreed, but when the comments are intelligent and objective. What happened early today was not that. And it was primarily caused by Seth jumping the gun on the story and making assumptions that turned out to be incorrect. That led people to be emotionally riled up one way, and then other's trying to calm them down, while in the meantime trolls stoked the flames of both sides. It was a mess.
That's why, as a news source, you have to be very careful what you release and how you release a story. It is not an easy thing to do, trust me, I've got 2 more years of school for it, and even then it won't be easy.
sounds nice
ReplyDeleteThird time's the charm...
ReplyDeleteI hate this, and will stop visiting EQD because this makes everything difficult. I refuse to make a blog on moral priciple
ReplyDeleteIt worked! No image though... meh, whatever, pseudo-anonymous mode didn't give me an image either, so no loss, no gain.
ReplyDelete@Drakengarde
ReplyDeletewhich post of mine are you responding to?
Going through the rest of these comments here, I can honestly say while I'm tempted to admit I don't really care...I'd be lying if I said that I didn't.
ReplyDeleteI never did care for anyplace that allowed anonymous posting. Every fandom I've been a part of--every major chat room or forum I've joined always required registration before any posting could be done...with some of the best even preventing anons from even lurking or even able to SEE any posts until they've joined up.
I'm honestly surprised we didn't do this sooner.
Well you've certainly given people enough methods of logging in, so there shouldn't be any issue. I think it should stay this way.
ReplyDeleteOkay, that was easy
ReplyDeleteI'm bored. Hey anyone needs help making an account and logging in? I think there should be some place where people can ask help on stuff like that. I had to email Seth himself to help me make an account. XD
ReplyDeletenice, i still find it sad we bearly hit 2 million views and lost the 1st ep to trolls.
ReplyDeleteI approve of this
ReplyDeleteI've often posted as an anon when I feared my honest opinions/critique on a piece of art might offend somepony, but I do think this is for the best overall.
ReplyDeleteGood show, Sethisto.
Although some parasprites may just make dozens of dummy accounts, many of the most offensive trolls just aren't that committed.
I approve of this
ReplyDeleteCool story bro.
ReplyDeleteyou know, people keep talking about trolls and stuff, and i just realized: i just havent seen it. its like im veiwing a slightly off version where no one is an asshole.
ReplyDeletei dunno, im tired. sleep now.
I approve of this.
ReplyDeleteI am just so frustrated I could scream!
ReplyDeleteYes it's a quote! But it's also accurate! I get SO tired of making ACCOUNTS FOR EVERYTHING! I don't want a blog account. I didn't want a google account. I hate that I need accounts for every little forum. It just SUCKS.
I'm starting to think I need to make a master list for them all. And then I'm sure I'll need a password for that too. *heavy sigh*
-.- I just wanted to keep using my Name/Url...
I think Anon commenting should be back for season 2. Before that… Meh.
ReplyDeleteWell if it helps keeps things nice and tollerant I am for it
ReplyDeleteI lol at the complainers.
ReplyDeleteI see I'm not the only one spawlin to make a blogger account.
ReplyDeleteAfter a few trys I managed to get it to work on IE and from the iPad.
Yay.
@Solar Flair
ReplyDeleteThere are programs out there that will link all of your accounts and passwords to one "master" account. Not sure how safe it really is, but the option is there.
@Vegetalss4 If you don't want to put your name next to something you write, you clearly can't commit to what you're writing. If you can't commit to your words, then maybe you should consider rewriting them.
ReplyDeleteI put my real name next to everything I write here because if someone was to tell me "Hey! You said this." I would be confident (even proud) to say that I did. If you can't do the same to your own words, then you should probably be reevaluating what you say.
I don't see elitism being an issue in this community either, since the majority of the community is fairly modest. Being elitist would only damage someone's reputation rather than get them any support.
I would definitely place myself in the camp of posters who think disabling Anonymous-ness is a wise move.
ReplyDeleteAnonymity does nothing positive whatsoever. When posters don't have to stand by their statements and cannot be held accountable for them, it encourages their worst impulses.
To quote the reprehensibly bad Kevin Bacon movie Hollow Man: "It's amazing what you can do... when you don't have to look at yourself in the mirror."
As mentioned repeatedly above, there are a wide array of ways to make an identity just for this site, and they are all easy, and none of them have to tie you to a non-pony-related identity.
If you don't want to be tied to something you say...maybe you should re-examine what you're saying.
I posted a comment
ReplyDeleteI was one of the good anons who got a bad rep due to all the others. I've been meaning to make a blogger account anyways so eh no biggy it'll cut down most if not all the trolls and such.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
ReplyDeleteIt's about time people were accountable... good and bad... for their words.
OK that sounds fair.
ReplyDeleteI like the move, there clearly are lots of fans and commenters anyway, getting rid of anon posts keeps the quality of comment content up, and that's never a bad thing.
ReplyDeleteBut I am wondering what happened to result in this? Was it numerous trolls/bad posts?
ReplyDeleteI'm fine with no Anon's really. It may have benign uses, but it's too easy to abuse and people will.
ReplyDeleteI personally would like for an ignore button to blot out people who seem to have nothing but trouble on their mind or spammers. Or at the very least a button that minimizes/hides comments from certain parties that would require another click if I really wanted to see them.
RAR&ACOUYAGSOUCYS
ReplyDeleteThey made me create a blog >:( I shall probably NEVER use it :P 'TWAS POINTLESS AND ANNOYING :(
testing... 1... 2... 3...
ReplyDeleteOkay, I was posting as Solar Flair. I have no idea why I can't now -.-'
ReplyDelete@Clementine lol. I was just thinking the same thing!
ReplyDeleteShould be interesting, to say the least...
ReplyDeleteThis is probably for the best.
ReplyDeleteTesting...
ReplyDeleteHave you gone mad?!
ReplyDeletezecora.jpg
I suppose this was inevitable. Considering the level of traffic on this site, I think having a few thread moderators would be recommended as well.
ReplyDeleteAh, here we go. This is nice.
ReplyDeleteEven just having to choose a name is a nice step up. When people have to actively choose an identity, even if it's a throwaway, they tend to think more about the stuff they say. Plus, it discourages annoying people, since we know who they are unless they bother to make a new account.
I could get used to this, so much.
I can only add
ReplyDeleteYay~
I, for one, approve of this.
ReplyDeleteUgh. Anonymity is one of the glorious aspects about the internet. Yes, trolls, flames, etc. But also far more truth and real conversation. ..sigh..
ReplyDeleteWhile I think disabling anon commenting for the time being is reasonable, I don't think it's the best solution in the long run. One reason why I prefer anon comments that doesn't seem to have been mentioned yet is that there are controversial topics that are unrelated to ponies that I sometimes want to mention without attaching my name to them. Another reason is that it is much less intimidating to disagree with a consensus anonymously than with an established pseudonym. I'm not talking about troll posts, but sincere disagreements that just happen to go against the grain.
ReplyDeleteAlso from previewing my comment it seems that blogger isn't going to use my old AOL screen name that I used to post this, making me wonder how effective the disabling will be.
Woops, I was wrong. Oh well, I haven't used this name in years.
ReplyDeleteWell, today I learned that I've had a blogger account for 2 years. Go figure.
ReplyDeleteWow lots of comments on this page.
ReplyDeleteWhat's that? Make it so that people can be made accountable for things that they say? That makes so much sense that I'm surprised that it wasn't done earlier!
ReplyDeleteOh, yeah! Now it's going to get serious up in this bitch!
ReplyDeleteI knew it was a good idea for me to create a blogger account solely so I could post on here with an actual name. I hope Anon commenting stays disabled.
ReplyDelete@rpb3000
ReplyDeleteThis. So much this.
@Myles
ReplyDeleteme too
LOL - every dumb troll is still adding views to the blog pageview counter...
ReplyDeleteYes!
ReplyDeleteThank you Seth. Honestly, thanks a bunch <3
Good, leave it off.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to voice my support on this motion.
ReplyDelete@rpb3000
ReplyDeleteNot to sound facetious, but...
is there a reason you can't tell the truth and also
use a consistent screen name at the same time?
Once again, if you don't want to stand by what
you say, it seems either you lack conviction,
or what you say lacks respectability ("you" used here
in the general sense; not pointing hooves).
We're talking about comments on a fandom, here,
not blowing the lid off of government conspiracies.
I'm pretty sure that we can all endure the occasional
snarky reply directed at our screen name, as opposed
to just directed at the Anonymous we know we are.
TL;DR: Why is anypony fighting for the right to post
things they would be ashamed to admit to posting?
Wow @ foals whining that requiring a blogger, aim, gmail, livejournal or wordpress account to post is 'elitist'.
ReplyDeleteDoes having an internet connection at home make you a hipster, then?
Five hundred and eleventh!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, just a test post to see if my account shows up right.
Altough i am a bit disaponted in posting as anon anymore i suppose it's for the better, most anons are just trolling anyways :/
ReplyDeleteso here's me with my first non-anon comment! another step to complete bronyness
[Insert your own "I'm so frustrated..." variation]
ReplyDeleteI sure hope it won't stay permanent. I doesn't matter for me now, but I'm sure it will prevent some people from posting entirely. Not trolls, really. Those spamming "FIRST!!!11", maybe, but I've never seen neither mandatory registration nor banning stop the determined, life-lacking (i.e. actually annoying) ones.
Besides, they won't stop trolling because it works so well. Aren't we here because spamming FiM episodes on youtube with copyright infringement reports sends the fandom into hysteria? Yet again?
And maybe I was looking at the wrong places, but I'd never say that most anons were trolls. Most were just average commentators. Nor, glancing at today's postings, have the comments become more funny or insightful (not that there's something wrong with them). There's just a bit less of them. Alas.
And I wouldn't call demanding an account elitist. More like pain in the ass. I can totally see why one would not want to make a Google/Blogger account just to comment on one site, especially since Blogger's login form implies you need to make a blog to be able to comment, even though it's not true.
TL;DR: It won't succeed at deterring trolls, so why make life harder for anyone?
Testing ability to post comments...
ReplyDeleteSorry for posting again, I'm testing with a different web browser...
ReplyDeleteJust adding my own test post to the heap.
ReplyDeleteI am kind of happy with this. I did not mind anonposting the majority of the time, because the majority of it is perfectly fine. But this should help to cut down the trolling, which was really getting on my nerves.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I come from internet forums and the like, all of which required accounts. The ability to post anonymously actually made me a little uncomfortable with this site's comment system. It just feels better to me now.
I support the change.
Good choice seth
ReplyDeleteUnderstandable. This is why you can't have nice things, anons...
ReplyDeletealso: testing...
Huh, well it certainly did seem a bit pointless for me to even start saying much of anything as an "Anonymous" account before hand seeing how other posters likely wouldn't have a clue as to which post(s) might have been made by me or not.. ^^;
ReplyDeleteThat alone was quite enough reason for me to set up a new account first before going ahead with making my first post sometime before now.. ^^;
First!
ReplyDelete@Cutie Mark Crusaders Glue Huffers! Yay!
ReplyDeletelittle bit late there, buddy ;)
anyhoof, I endorse this decision. Among the first things I did was get an account on here. Dunno why anyone wouldnt want one.
Testing, testing.
ReplyDelete1, 2, 3.
Testing.
Well I may as well give myself an identity here, should I ever submit those fanfics I was going to write
ReplyDelete@MASTERLINKX
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see you here, MLX, I worshipped your old Nintendo videos when I was in middle school.
Now I use your channel to watch ponies, how times have changed.
Overall, this measure definitely improves the quality of posts but its a hassle for people like me who don't post on things very often and don't have any of the other options for commenting. Personally I try to keep my 'footprint' on the internet as small as possible so I don't have to keep track of all the various things I've signed up for which is why I was reluctant to make a blogger account.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I was really annoyed at were all the first posts. Didn't notice the trolling going on, or if I did I didn't take any notice of it.
Former anon trying to get Blogger Account. Does this comment work?
ReplyDelete~yay~
ReplyDeleteI like the idea in general, but so far I've lost two big posts due to authentication errors that I haven't been able to recover. Its incredibly frustrating. :(
ReplyDeleteWe're sorry, but we were unable to complete your request.
