• PMV: Mortal Kombat / What Pinkie's Song Actually Sounded Like

Have some super awesome Fluttershy.  I'm pretty sure this pony is slowly proving Pegasus supremacy to me.

Number 2 contains one of those parody rap songs filled with various swear words, you have been warned, like 3 times.

Also some official(?) dutch dubs? Sounds interesting. Spike is kind of obnoxious though.

    1.) Mortal Kombat Mortal Kombat
2.) What Pinkie's Song Actually Sounded Like (WARNING: EXCESSIVE FLUTTERCUSSING)
    3.) Dutch Ticketmaster Voiceovers

      Also I want to add:
I'm currently working on a Dutch transcript, and will eventually add them to the English episodes as subtitles, for whoever is interested.

    9. #2 The FINEST lip-syncing I've ever seen!

      ReplyDelete
    10. The Dutch word for "no" sounds like "neigh." That is awesome.

      ReplyDelete
    11. #2 is Probably the Best Thing ive ever seen minus the cussing but for some reason that made 20% cooler

      ReplyDelete
    12. 1. Oh, cool... That's kinda cool...
      2. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!! That's just AMAZING!!!! The lip-syncing is PERFECT!!!!
      3. Their voices... They sound great! And the opening was pretty awesome. So yes... If any more (Dutch?) episodes are released, I shall watch them.

    13. Mortal Combat F yeah!

      Dat rap is awesome!

My god, that dutch episode is bad. Is this what we get? Why not the english episodes with subtitles...

      3. well, it´s a great dub i guess...

    15. *Sigh*. I have been dreading this day.

Dutch dubs almost always suck. We have some very talented voice actors, sadly they almost never get hired. The FiM dub is as horrible as I feared. From what I understand, its from the same DVD that we have seen in other countries, with the Ticket Master episode. Not on TV yet over here. But its only a matter of time now.

I can only pray that it will appear on Boomerang as well over here. That we its certain to be in English.

    17. wow did the guy who made number 2 use magpie pro 2 or something?

    18. this looked like it was studio dubbed. The sync was flawless, and Pinkie's actions were hilarious!

    19. Number 2 is the best lip syncing I think I have ever seen, even outside of mlp.

    22. #2 Congrats you've made once again think that FlutterShy could actually sound like a black guy in the actual show xD

      ReplyDelete
    23. The second one is going straight to my MP4

      ReplyDelete
    24. Pinkie looks really intense when she beatboxes.

      ReplyDelete
    25. #3: I'd listen to these ladies speak in Dutch all day long.

      ReplyDelete
    26. #2 sounds like something from Family Guy.
      (Am I far off?)

#3 Well, I don't speak Dutch or anything, so I don't really know what I'm supposed to be listening for, but I did notice that it was totally weird to hear Applejack with a pretty girl voice instead of her uh...hard edged southern American woman voice. And Pinkie actually sounded the most mature this time. Freaky.

Also, kinda freaky how similar Twilight's Dutch voice sounded to her original voice. But cool.

Totally liking Rainbow Dash's voice though.

      ReplyDelete
    27. Dutch intro = epic.

      ReplyDelete
    28. 1. As the announcer was saying the Mortal Kombat characters, the corresponding ponies didn't match at all. Fair overall.
      2. AMAZING!

    29. #2 was just...wow.

    30. Dutch dub was around a long time.
      And i hate dutch dubs(Dutch).

      ReplyDelete
    31. 1) Mortal Kombat one was...dissapointing... could've been done better. I may take a stab at one... All these PMVs have been really poking me to get back into some editing.

      2) Fluttercussing, what an awsome word. Ponies are even capable of making a normal english word even better. From henceforth I say we should apply this word to any and all future instances of something unbearably cute talking the worst trash possible.

      3) Saw this earlier today. Dutch is awsome. I love how similar sounding Twilight is to the english one too.

      ReplyDelete
    32. I don't know, the dutch sub wasn't the worst I've heard. And I find it fascinating how many words are so similar in dutch and english!

      ReplyDelete
    33. #2 is the only rap I have ever liked.
All other rap is basically balls that are on fire, being thrown at prejudice.

      ReplyDelete
    34. My God, 2 was perfect. Literally Perfect.

      ReplyDelete
    35. I tried to transcribe #3 to English. I'm still laughing!

      ReplyDelete
    36. Actually surprised by the quality of the second one. Hah. God tier lip sync.

      ReplyDelete
    37. Insane sync on #2
      #3: haha, "Vunderbolts"

      ReplyDelete
    38. Was the animation in the Reggie Watts one redone? The lip sinking is too good for them to have used edited stock footage.

      ReplyDelete
    39. It's nice to know that blah blah blah is the same in every language.

      ReplyDelete
    40. 2 was pure genius

      ReplyDelete
    41. #1 no Johnny Cage? this is an outrage!

      ReplyDelete
    42. 1-Just makes me want the ponyfighter game even more
2-Although I don't really like Reggie Watts or the amount of vulgarity in this song, I still loled my face off. Plus excellent lipsyncing. A+
3-I don't feel justified in having an opinion on this. But I do. AWESOME!

      ReplyDelete
    43. I'd be very interested in hearing what Princess Celestia and Princess Luna sound like in Dutch -- or any other language besides English, for that matter...

"And I find it fascinating how many words are so similar in dutch and english!"

Not surprising. Linguistically, English and Dutch are kissing cousins as it were -- although, IIRC from my Geography classes, Dutch evolved differently because it borrowed more heavily from Germanic dialects than English did. If I'm in any way in error about this, I invite any Dutch-speakers to correct me.

      ReplyDelete
    44. I like Spike's different voice for some reason.

      ReplyDelete
    45. #2 That... has to be the greatest thing I've ever seen. Loved every second of that
I dislike most rap, but rap that makes fun of rap is the best rap. Add pony to it, icing on the cake.

#3 OH MY GOD THEY SOUND SO CUTE IN DUTCH! I don't get to hear Dutch accents enough! =D
(The opening song kinda clashed though) Considering Applejack's VA, I guess they don't have country accents?

      ReplyDelete
    46. Vriendschap is Betoverend!

I find it interesting how recognizably "Friendship" translates to Dutch, but "Magic" is completely different in every conceivable way, from number of syllables to not sharing a single letter...

      ReplyDelete
    47. @Anonymous (10:45 PM)

Having done quite a bit of lip syncing, I can tell you how it was probably done. There are two key things to notice: first, that Pinkie Pie doesn't overlap with Fluttershy; and second, that Fluttershy's mouth doesn't horizontally overlap with her eyes.

As such, I have a feeling that the video creator likely split the video into three parts: Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy above her nose, and Fluttershy below her nose. Then it's just a matter of independently animating Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy's eyes, and Fluttershy's mouth, keeping Pinkie in sync with the beat, Fluttershy's mouth in sync with the vocals, and Fluttershy's eyes just blinking at a regular interval.

Quite ingenious, really - the time it must've taken is staggering.

      ReplyDelete
    48. #3 Oh my! In the title song, they translated 'And magic makes it all complete' as 'and magic gets you through' or 'magic drags you through'. It's the same way a Dutch person would say 'alcohol gets me through the week'.

      It's.. it's..

      ReplyDelete
    49. @Anonymous

      Actually, Spike says 'la-die-da-die-da'

      ReplyDelete
    50. I loved number 2!

Aaaand... about number 3.. I knew that one day, I would see a Dutch dub of MLP. I also knew I'd probably be disappointed. I tried my best not to compare it to the original too much, and to be honest, I'm not as disappointed as I thought I might be.

Spike sounds horrible, Applejack sounds like some rich girl (she doesn't even have the slightest hint of an accent, actually she sounds like she's trying very hard not to have one), Pinkie Pie sounds EVEN MORE like a rich girly girl, Fluttershy doesn't sound shy, and Rainbow Dash doesn't have that 'Is she gay?' thing about her. Also most of the singing is horrible. I drum, so my musical ear isn't the best around, but even I could tell the opening tune was off key (not to mention off beat) sometimes. An Fluttershy's singing was off key too.

I liked Twilight's voice though, and though Rarity's could've been better (more like Pinkie Pie), it was still OK.

Now that may seem a little negative, but I still think I'll watch some more of this when it airs on tv. I was won over by that one moment where Pinkie Pie said "Havermout? Ben je gek geworden?" ("Oatmeal? Are you crazy?"). It made me smile at that joke like it was something new.

      ReplyDelete
    51. @Anonymous

The word 'magic' actually translates as 'magie' in Dutch. The word they used ('betoverend') can be translated as 'enchanting'.

      ReplyDelete
    55. I hate all dubs, because they are always worse than the original, usually a lot worse, but nothing compares to Dutch dubs, they are just awful...
      This dub is no exception.

@reynard61 Dutch is indeed similar to English, but not nearly as similar as Dutch and German.
are. Dutch borrowed a lot from the French language too.

      @Kujiro
Dutch does have country accents, but they can be hard to understand (one of them is even recognized as a separate language(Frisian)). They could at least have made Applejack sound a little country-ish though.

      @Anonymous guy below Kujiro
Actually, is means friendship is enchanting, the Dutch word for Magic is "Magie" which is very similar to "Magic" in spelling, but not at all in pronunciation.

      ReplyDelete
    56. Anyone notice the ending of the first video? XD

    57. #2 is hilarious, mostly because I just love that song.

    59. #1: How the hay did that work?

      #2: Best pony-sync ever.

#3: Bueno! Can we get a quality version hablas Espanol?

      ReplyDelete
    60. Dutch brony here...

I knew this would happen and I knew I was going to hate it.

Actually, I don't hate the dub as much as I thought I would. Fluttershy sounds shy (sort of), Pinkie sounds crazy (sort of). By and large, our dubs tend to be so horrendously bad that they make your ears bleed, so I guess this is acceptable. At least they tried to stay true to the original. Then again, they didn't try very hard either.

Applejack has no accent, to name one thing, which is a shame. For those of you who are wondering, yes we do have different accents over here and many of them would have fit AJ just fine. They could have easily hired a VA that sounds Twents, Brabants, Belgian, heck even Dutch with a cheesy American accent.. but no, AJ just sounds normal.

Second, they ruined Spike. To the point where if Spike were real and understood Dutch he'd be very angry. Very, very angry.

Finally, large portions of the script and dialogue got mangled and lost in translation. Pinkie doesn't alliterate when she talks about the food at the gala, to name one example. I wouldn't know how to translate 'sarsaparilla' either, but they could have tried something.

Overall it's just not as good as the English dub.

      ReplyDelete
    61. PONY KOMBAT!

      FRIENDSHIP THEM!

And Reggie Watts is stupidly hilariously. I mean that my IQ drops every time I hear Fuck Shit Stack, but oh lawdy I never get tired of laughing at it. Mostly because I view that as the general base that all mainstream rappers base their "songs" on, for lack of a better term.

      ReplyDelete
    62. @GabuEx

I did split the screen between the ponies, but I didn't split FS in half. I just put a mask over her mouth area that covered the range of motion of her lips and also allowed room for her to blink.

      ReplyDelete
    63. No idea on #3.
I have strange feelings when listening to Dutch. I speak English and German (well, not so well but still), and I feel like my head is exploding when i try to understand Dutch.
It feels like I know what they are saying, but still not really.
As if a German is trying to speak while something is stuck in his throat O.o With a little added English softness.
(Sorry not meaning to insult here).

      ReplyDelete
    64. Huh, the dutch episode has voices actually has voices that SOUND like the original characters! I'm impressed! Not like the german dub...

      ReplyDelete
    65. The moment I recognized the beat of 2 i braced for lulz. I still don't know why that guy is so funny. And my god, dat lipsync

The third one threw me off. The accent sounded north American enough it caught me off guard every time they spoke and it wasn't in English.

    69. well i normaly hate everything thats dubbed dutch (yes native dutch person here)and i got to be honest next to spikes and rainbows there vocies and pinkie pies singing i have seen ALOT worse most of the populiar shows here get dubbed whit the same VA's which makes it suck
im glad they dit not do that whit this one so honestly its ok

      ReplyDelete
    70. Just watched #2.
I don't like that song, not a bit, even if it ment to be a mockery / satire.

But this is the best lipsync I have seen so far, all my respect to the creator.

      ReplyDelete
    71. This Dutch version is the same episode that has been posted in several other languages (including Brazilian Portuguese). The DVD is part of a promotional toy package that is distributed all over the world. I have no idea how many different countries/languages it was made in, but the dubbing work is obviously professional, though likely rushed.
There seem to be about 50-50 positive/negative responses to these dubs, so I guess they are cool. Some people HAVE to say negative things (or claim everything is "fake") because they believe being negative makes them 20% cooler or something. Sad...
I wonder how many countries will eventually get to see MLPFiM in their native language?

      ReplyDelete
    72. Personally I can't wait for the Japanese dub of this show.

      ReplyDelete
    73. The dub sounds okay, even when I can't understand the language. Applejack has the voice tone but lacks accent, Twilight is on spot. Spike is ruined and sounds like a little annoying critter, ugh!

The intro is surprisingly well harmonized and I like it, even when the idiom makes the lyrics sound a little rough.

Rainbow Dash sounds different and needs to be about 20% cooler. Pinkie sounds crazy, but doesn't fit exactly and needs more pitch. Rarity is missing a little of her glamour. Fluttershy sounds soft, but no one will ever be able to give the performance that Andrea Libman has done with her.

Overall, it sounds okay. The casting was done well for our heroine Twilight and sounds like everypony else just had to stand-in the best they could. I'm officially worried for the Latin-American dub that is coming in October.

      ReplyDelete
    74. @ProfesorRod
I'm not sure about AJ. She definitely has a broader sound than Twilight -- she may be using the Dutch equivalent of a hick accent. Be careful about judging the pronunciation of a language you don't speak.

Nothing wrong with being critical of something that could use some improvements.

      On that note:

Dutch Spike sounds absolutely grating. My poor innocent ears are bleeding.

Rainbow Dash's Dutch voice doesn't sound kinda bland. She should sound like she's awesome and she knows it, but she, well, doesn't.

Applejack's voice was good enough, but had a complete lack of accent. I can think of a dozen Dutch rural accents that would've worked perfectly well.

Pinkie Pie's songs were pretty much butchered, but then translating a song in a different language is a lot more complex than simple dialogue on account of having to factor in musical timing and rhymes and the like. She could use a better singing voice, though.

Twilight, on the other hoof, was perfectly spot-on.

The rest of the cast was acceptable.

More generally, pronunciation of names could use some major work. Half the time, Spike was called "Spijk", to name the worst offender. :B
