Markarian, the Co-Chair at Everfree Northwest, recently gained an audience from one of the higher ups at Hasbro. Their general message about us is extremely positive overall. If you have been worried about their stance on us, this is definitely something to pick up and listen to. Some of the bigger names in the community (Myself included) completely back this.
Please note that Derpy wasn't actually addressed in Markarian's conversation with Hasbro, but we can try to take this news as a positive step toward eventually securing her place in the show.

ReplyDeleteI have to say that I am VERY impressed with the way Hasbro has handled the brony phenomenon. It has shown a generosity and appreciation I never would have expected from a big company. It goes to show how false stereotyping can be, even if it's applied to corporations. Bravo to Hasbro. And bravo to the brony community for earning Hasbro's trust. You should all be very proud of yourselves. :)

ReplyDeleteFrom what I can discern, if Hasbro is developing a policy to deal with our demographic, that might also include merchandise that aims specifically towards us. I guess shifting a franchise that was first made for little girls into something more global will take its time. So I agree, lets give them a break, while we keep producing tons of fanart and fanfics.
Hmmm... yay? I don't even know what this is about, I haven't been very active here recently... But it sounds positive, so I'll just confirm that as a yay.

ReplyDeleteSo I guess we can breathe a little easier now. Sounds like even at this point, Hasbro's still trying to get a handle on the "madness" that is our fandom. They started with a kids show, and instead got pretty much a cultural revolution. Can't blame them for feeling more than a little overwhelmed. In which case, yes, definitely give them some room to breathe and collect their thoughts. They're being patient with us. The least we can do is show them that same patience. Maybe more.

ReplyDeleteSounds like Hasbro was totally unprepared for the unified force of bronies worldwide and the demand placed on them from a demographic that is the polar opposite of the intended one. Completely understandable that, as a company, they need time to develop an official stance rather than continuing to play it by ear. They have my support and I trust that the franchise, and its fans, will be well taken care of by those involved. A vote of confidence can go a long way in helping things to play out smoothly and in a positive manner.

I am kinda new to this fandom but I have noticed that we can get behind something and get pretty passionite about things but may get too enthusiactic about things. Anyway I am glad that things are working out well and I think if we give Hasbro some time it will work itself out.

ReplyDeleteThis is great news. I really wish there was more transparency in corporate systems. It just really seems like a recipie for disaster to suddenly pull something that looks highly suspicious, and then not say anything about it at all. I understand the need for business privacy, but geeze, just a little "It's ok, were just doing some routine stuff, no need to worry" message from PR would fix most problems that spawn from this.

I honestly wasn't worried about Hasbro's take on Bronies or anything related. Hasbro has never really been -against- Bronies. They've simply always been neutral, if not learning more toward positivity toward Bronies and the community. Some people just take things way too far and start sending themselves and others who are as easily unsettled, into frenzies. Also, take note, only -some- people in the community do that. Some of us are level-headed and don't act like Scootaloo's with our head's chopped off.

Most likely before they can decide their "strategy" they need to decide who actually gets to make the decision, and what the decision means, and all that...

The headline and the description made it sound like it was bad news. Especially the "extremely positive overall" and the reassurance that important members of the community support the decision. It seemed like an attempt to lessen the blow, or prevent a panic. I almost gave myself a heart attack when I read that.

ReplyDeleteNow that I think about it more, companies have been trying to tap into the power of the internet and how it can catapult about anything to popular overnight. They have been looking into what exactly makes something go viral.
ReplyDeleteHasbro had the luck for it to happen to a product of theirs. That along with an initial lets wait and see what happens stand point, has let this become as big as it has. They literally struck oil in an unexpected place much like the opening of "The Beverly Hillbillies". The analogy can go farther than just the opening too, as most companies are like the Clampetts, and consumers are like the other people in the show.
It takes time to adapt when things change unexpectedly.

I... honestly don't know what to take from that. However, since Hasbro and Team My Little Pony have been cool to our community so far, I'll follow the example and request submitted by you guys and give them a rest... so instead of being angry that I'm missing two episodes from iTunes (even though one I already have downloaded and the other hasn't been posted yet), I'll just be very anxious and remember that the Hasbro logo is just them smiling back.

Of course, we don't have a lot of information on what actually happened, but I imagine we'll learn more with time. The takeaway message is that she'll be alright, right?

ReplyDeleteAnd it makes me wonder... if Bronies will completely buck the trend of "RUINED FOREVER" that the Transformers fanbase set with Hasbro.(No offense to said fans on this site, I understand that there are plenty of you that don't fit the description...)
I mean, yeah, our fandom already generally bucks many trends online. I don't have to go into Love and Tolerate and countless other examples of being Mare-Do-Wells, now, do I? Hehehe... But I digress.
Point being, to have our source company (Hasbro) recognize and ANTICIPATE (aka, use marketing to prepare products for) our... requests?
That would be (and likely WILL be) so much WIN, that we won't be able to contain ourselves with joy, as we continue to shape the internet around us, not just for ponies, but for every other fandom that comes after us.

Its the other not so obvious stuff that will be interesting. Who knows, there might start doing action figures, after all they have villains they could market. It would be funny if that actually spread the brand even farther. As can be hard to find toys of mythical monsters. I would buy some of the villains for myself.

Well everyone, something has finally happened. Either we were heard or there was nothing to worry about all along. There's absolutely no clarification yet aside from 'Hasbro is trying to figure out how to market toward us.' Mayhap all of this was simply a copyright claim regarding Derpy, as the speculation went.
Anyway, I want all of you to know: signing this petition was not a matter to be ashamed of, now that Derpy appears safe. We all thought something could happen to a pony we all love, and we took steps to try to save her. It was a noble cause. And most importantly, this petition was never, at any point, created of malicious intent toward Hasbro. In fact, it was wholly positive the entire time it ran. So thank you all for that - it was your comments that made it as positive as it was.
That said, the petition will shut down shortly. Derpy is safe, regardless of if it's because of us or not. Thank you all again for your support and kindness.
Let's be civil bronies, Hasbro has handled everything amazingly well. I take my hat off to them, they're awesome. I mean, we would have mlp fim as we know it without Faust, but it was Hasbro who proposed it in the first place (not to mention runs it, pays for it, makes the toys, adds, etc lol xD )

ReplyDeleteGuys, a petition is one single document with many signatures. This is FAR better than many documents with one signature. It's clean and it's precise. I say, continue with the petition, just be nice about it... and don't make multiple petitions.
Wow, thank you Hasbro. They've never seen anything like this before, just like I've never seen something like this before. It's totally understandable that they would need some time to process something like this happening; something that was the complete opposite of what they expected. This show and fandom are changing the face of media. And hey, our favorite Muffin Queen ain't going nowhere either. Celebrate good times, come on!

ReplyDeleteWell, that's terrific news! While the Hub and Studio B have clearly loved us, it's always felt like Hasbro themselves have been pretty ambivalent toward us. So now, confirmation that they're aware of us, and want a good working relationship with us, and heavily implied that they might start marketing to us? This is the day that many of us have been waiting for!
ReplyDeleteStill idk... the Hasbro rep was complaining about the volume of emails they were getting but... that was kinda the point, ne? Spamming questions about the status of Derpy, or about the VA appearances, or about Blu-rays, yadda yadda yadda -- the point of all that was to show support and/or to get clarification. I mean, the quickest way for them to stop the flood of #SaveDerpy emails would've been to release an official statement to the fansites, rather than ask "less emails plz" with no details to a single podcaster.
Buuuuut, it sounds like that's precisely the marketing team they're getting into place. So I'll stop QQ'ing over catch 22s. The future looks bright indeed, and they have my trust.
Hasbro's a pretty cool company, they like the fans and don't afraid of anything.

Example being the Michelle Creber Christmas songs that had to be taken out because it wasn't "authorized"

ReplyDeleteWhile I agree with the notion, you should get paid for your work (I had no hard feelings over a particular website that got shut down providing free downloads. Reality is this whole "business" side of thing is really a royal pain. For US bronies, the obvious choice is the Hub, Hasbro's own TV channel. But for viewers outside of the state who relies on youtube for new episodes it's the only thing left, and for the local broadcast network to "gain copyright" and finally air the episodes it might be a year and a bit later...I sincerely hope Hasbro's marketing team can work around the issue so we can both come to terms with the copyright and the episode viewing right

Anyways, this sort of business - fan community interaction is admirable.
It renews my hope that more skillful networking will make it possible for businesses to become one with their investors and target consumers, the same way protocells became one with mitochondria. Such a dramatic shift would drastically improve efficiency.
I love how the community does not consist of 14 year old kids, just like so many people see us... I really do like that we have smart people around the place, people who can and like making convertation, and who are intellectually able to do so...

ReplyDeleteI keep having a feeling that a lot of us, including me, are trying hard to shove our money into Hasbro's throat but they are reluctant to take it. Their loss.
Can't legally buy an episode? Torrents. Can't get a plushie? Bronies make them too. The problem lies with figurines ("dolls", models) as these from Hasbro are simply disgusting and nobody makes good ones.
bottomline was the demand far exceeds the supply. They want to do something they just really dont know how yet.

ReplyDeleteNope, like I said in my previous post, the official website is cater to American fans ONLY. The streaming of contents do not help those of us who are outside of the US jurisdiction, because we couldn't get around it even with proxy ips. You have to understand there are fans outside of the US and North America that have difficulties accessing contents on the Hub (myself included) due to differences in copyright claims ie. Hasbro US selling copyrights to say X TV station in another country, we don't always get the latest contents.
I don't remember who said the quote, but it fits the situation when it comes to Hasbro and the Brony community:

(We all know that many overseas fans would buy the episodes if they could. This is an unfortunate result of international licensing agreements which are at least a decade behind the technological times.)

ReplyDeleteIt is clear that most of the staff working the show do enjoy engaging this community. It is also clear that they are putting minor things in the show for us specifically (speaking Derpy ended up being a big thing).
I'm not sure that the Hasbro guy was really complaining (it is hard to know since the information was relayed), but may have been stating the fact that he's receiving and reading emails from Bronies as a way to enforce that Hasbro is getting the emails and does know we exist. They're not just going to /dev/null.
Hasbro certainly likes making money, and I'm sure that if they believe that they can make money off of Bronies without compromising the brand image or profits from the traditional MLP demographic, they will take measures to do so.

ReplyDeleteI would love for there to be a way to watch any episode I want online without having to give some company my personal and financial infos. I wouldn't even mind commercial breaks just like on tv. As a matter of fact I would probably be more likely to pick a particular brand of something if it was advertised during a show I like such as FIM.

ReplyDeleteThat's why I was excited to hear that they have someone working on marketing Ponies who previously marketed Transformers. Everyone knows that lots of adults buy Transformers, and they've done a good job marketing to both kids and adults with that franchise.
Heck, this might result in us getting some slightly more show-accurate toys. SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY! :)

Minecraft is an example of a small indie company whose product was a runaway success with the obvious demographic.
MLP is an example of a large international company learning to cope with a COMPLETELY unexpected demographic becoming part of the fanbase.
If minecraft had developed a core following of 60 year old women, then they would be comparable. As it is, both are interesting cases that I'm sure students of business will watch closely, for different reasons.
Let's help Hasbro out here and list some pony products we'd be interested in.
ReplyDelete1. Karaoke/instrumental tracks for the songs, to be used for singing at parties, brony conventions, or just at home having fun.
2. PG Rated content. For example some episodes were heavily altered or canned because Hasbro felt that they wouldn't appeal to the target audience. Prince Blueblood for example was changed frok a Duke to a Prince because they felt little girls wouldn't know what a Duke was.
I think maybe there should be occasional content that's meant for older viewers, not shown on the Hub, but maybe an occasional special episode DVD included with brony-targeted merchandise. I'm not talking about anything vulgar here (no shed.mov, or cupcakes lol) just something with a more sophisticated audience in mind now and then.
3. Adult sized officially licensed clothing, hand bags (for pegasisters mostly on that one), accessories, etc.
4. Show-accurate figurines (a white Celestia, for example, a full-sized Luna, cutie marks on both sides of the flanks, etc.)
5. Food-related Maybe a recipe book on how to make various recipes from the show like Chimi Cherry/Cherry Changa, or Sugar Cube Corner Cupcakes, or an edible flower sandwich.
Maybe pony-shaped candies or decorative jars for keeping flour/pasta in, or pony salt and pepper shakers, that kind of thing.
I'd like to see pony scented candles (I don't think I'd burn them unless I bought extras though!)

ReplyDeleteOf course Hasbro loves us. It's taking forever for them to actually show it though. The show is over a year old. We're just getting a DVD. The toy line hasn't been upgraded or changed. And the only merchandise that's really targeted towards us are We Love Fine shirts which is just fan art on t-shirts.
ReplyDeleteMaybe we will finally get the attention that the Transformers fans get, but time is a tickin'. This really shouldn't be that hard strategically. Just take a page out of the GI Joe or Transformers playbook. They've been catering to their fans of all ages for years with those brands! Maybe there's some skepticism about demographics and sales (I admit I have some skepticism too), but they haven't shown much of an effort as far as tangibles go.
I can only keep hoping that SDCC is where and when we'll finally see some results.

ReplyDeleteIn fact, it's because the Hub, formerly Discovery Kids, is NOT all over the world. For example, in Latin America, FiM is being broadcasted in Discovery Kids, as Discovery Networks Latin America still has ownership of that channel. Boing and Cartoonito broadcast(ed) the series in Spain.

Send in a show accurate Fluttershy blindbag and I'll personally walk into the pink isle and buy one for an excessively large price. Hell, if they made a half decent plushie, I'd be OK with not buying the next Battlefield or AC game for a while.

ReplyDeleteI think that it's just random trolls claiming to be Hasbro, while Hasbro never does antything with Youtube. They are just as fine with it as they always were.
BUT!
When someone sends them letters about the takedowns the only thing they can officially state IS, that they have to save their owned properity.
They CAN NOT officially and in a legal way say, that they don't mind that we share episodes of their show on Youtube. Do they?

But I'm happy Hasbro has decided to listen to us and I'm even happier we can have a positive working relationship with a company when something we think is wrong, it certainly helps the overall feelings of both parties.

...Thank you for that. Thank you for being the only person in this whole page of comments who said that. You have to be one of maybe three people on EQDaily I've seen who have said that.
When rumors of the removal came up, spam, threats, and "fuck you" flew around like no tomorrow. Bronies in general, I get that you might disagree with Derpy being offensive or disagree with somebody that didn't like *something* when this came out. But that doesn't justify countering people who said "I'm offended" by essentially going "COME AT ME, BRO!"
Hey, Sethisto, we got a comment telling people not to spam Hasbro. Would it be possible for just a little love and tolerance going the other way and telling people not to spam people who had issues with the character?
I think the most feasible change in approach is show-accurate figurines. Hasbro are certainly aware that Internet popularity can disappear as quickly as it arrived, so I expect they'll want to create merchandise with wide appeal that can still be sold to children if the adult market evaporates. It's unlikely there'll be anything aimed exclusively at adults unless the investment required is trivial.

While the title of the article is a little misleading, I think most of us thought this was about Derpy, it's good to hear anything good out of Hasbro about the fandom. Now get them to address Derpy-gate.

Hasbro seems to still can't let Fensler's G.I. Joe PSAs be nor tolerate them, example being they forbid the voice crew for a G.I. Joe movie tie-in video game to do a reference of them (i.e. "Porkchop Sandwiches")

There's absolutely no malicious intent toward Hasbro in it. It's a reaction to people trying to say Derpy is offensive, not a reaction against Hasbro.
So, would you (and anyone else reading this) say that it should keep going, knowing all that?
This is a positive. Who knows maybe we will see more collectable merch coming out that is directed towards older fans. I'd love to have some real mane ponies or even the blind bags to the US lol.

Like in this fandom, Derpy seems to be ok for them to use, but I highly doubt they will ever do anything with the fanfic "Cupcakes" or the R34 stuff.

Whats probably got em freaked out is that this is supposed to be a girl's show. Hasbro should be aware of adult interest in their toylines with the GiJoe/Transformers fanbase. They put out G1 toys for the longtime fans alongside the new lines.

ReplyDeleteI saw this when it got hastily posted up on www.derpyhoovesnews.com on the first day. Conveniently, right after I listened to that episode of the Bronyville podcast. I'd highly recommend everypony listen to both of them. That episode of Bronyville might be a real "bite the bullet" time for some types of bronies, but it does help explain a lot. :)
