Johnny Bravo apparently lost a fight with Rarity for calling her 'Pretty Momma'.
There were plenty of smiles and crazy expressions.
Pinkie was over the top and in form for bouncing around like she drank a bottle of Gummy Berry Juice.
Above average episode I say, now the neighsayers may take the floor with comments as too much singing.

Damm this episode was pure win
9/10. The only thing keeping it a 10 / 10 was that Pinkie makes a leap on Matilda being the jenny that he had been searching for. I have no doubt she'd make such a connection in that multi quantum string theory that is Pinkie's brain, but the viewer should be able to make the connection beyond 'what a coincidence, the first donkey we see in the episode is the one he's after.

ReplyDeleteLoved the continuity (cake twins are always cute), the Derpy globe, and I actually awww'd at the reunion.
It goes without saying 4 songs are great. Pinkie has already met the song quota for next week too.
Granted as soon as I saw lady donkey early in the ep, I had a feeling she'd be relevant and would probably solve the problem, however it didn't detract at all from the story or the emotional investment in it.
I'm so glad I didn't listen to Smile, Smile,Smile before the ep, it's likely my favorite song now.
Time to watch it again on my dvr until it gets posted on youtube.
10/10 Loved it.

ReplyDeleteBeing one of those that thought Gilda's actions were semi-justified by Pinkie's excessive behavior back then, I really liked the ending, I feared it would end as a shallow 'I can make anyone happy by harassing them to death!' morale, but it looks like she finally learned; not everyone needs a truckload of friends, and some turn them away for a good reason.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, that was a great episode, the songs, the obliteration of the fourth wall, the references, all-around amazing.
Overall this episode was indeed awesome, but the main song sequence...so help me, if this show doesn't come up for some awards for music in a kids' show it will be a travesty. The Smile song itself is easily the single best song of the entire series so far. The animated sequence that now goes along with it was just brilliant.

ReplyDeleteIt's kind of funny. While far from exceptional, I actually do think "A Friend in Deed" demonstrates a lot of why "Friendship is Magic" has such a particular appeal, at least for me. It's mostly in the little details, but the broad strokes help too in their way.
ReplyDeleteNothing much strikes me as "wrong" with the episode; a little Pinkie goes a long way, so spending SO much time with her, and often in a very particular fashion, does drag a little bit, particularly towards the end, but it's hard to REALLY complain about it when the show approaches it with so much creative energy. Beyond that, the whole thing plays out very nicely. Cranky's arc is a little bit predictable, especially given how obvious Matilda's going to have something to do with it given that we'd NEVER seen a donkey in Ponyville like that before, though again the show does a clever job of obscuring it by also having a cow in town too, but predictable though it is, it's still ultimately satisfying and sweet, and I'm glad it ultimately amounted to a lesson about giving Friends their space, something I've been hoping Pinkie'd learn for a LONG time now. XD
All of that adds up to an episode that, like I said, is perfectly decent but really nothing super-special. And yet...when looked at in context, "A Friend in Deed" demonstrates one of the things that makes "Friendship is Magic" such a special little show for me. Notice Rainbow reading that Derring Do book? Notice how Cranky name-checks just about every location in Equestria? Notice how his back-story revolves around the Grand Galloping Gala? Notice that this really IS a lesson Pinkie's long needed to learn? Without being continuity-intensive per se, this show's characters and world demonstrate a particular coherency to them that I very much appreciate. It makes everything in it feel a bit more "real", so to speak, a bit more rewarding. There's a reason to get emotionally invested in these characters and their world, in other words, because the show frequently rewards you if you do. "A Friend in Deed" shows that off in a lot of little ways for me, and that made it that much more enjoyable. :)
Also I'm pretty sure that was Derpy in the snow globe. >w>
10/10 from me that episode was very fun.

The song, I believe, is a successful attempt at a genuine friendship song. There have been so many shows that tried to do a friendship song, failed, and just had me annoyed. This song had good harmonics, an actual good singer, amazing background singers as well, and to top it off with a cherry, great animations.
