• Episode Followup: A Friend In Deed

It's episode roundup time, where we dig way too far into absolutely every single aspect of an episode with a whole bunch of images.

This was by far the most 4th wall breaking, insane Pinkie ever.  They really took her to a whole new level.

    Continue on after the break!

First off, we finally have a confirmation on Rose's name.  I don't know if that was inevitably going to be her name at the start, or if they picked ours for it, but at least it's canon now!

We also get a look into the other sentient beings inhabiting Equestria.  Apparently they have wages, and shop, just like the ponies!

And of course, Cranky Doodle Donkey, the co-star of the episode.

Plus his love interest, Matilda.  I guess donkeys only have neat names half the time!

It looks like Ponyville is governed by more than just Mayor Mare.  They all still look like snobs though! I wonder if we will ever see an episode dedicated to her?

Then we have this pony.  I don't know what you guys have named her, but for some reason she reminds me of an OC pony from Deviant art.  I guess it's those trendy glasses or something! I for one welcome our overly tanned overlord.

And of course Derpy.  Can't forget her obviously.

We also have a name for the old guy from the funeral in the last episode.  Meet Mr. Waddle! Lets see some fanfics about him! I bet he's a super hero in disguise.

    Speaking of Super Hero Powers....

Pinkie Pie makes Celestia look like Snails.  Seriously, she has so many insane abilities.

    PARTICLE EXPLOSION

    PINKIE PIE ROCKET

    SHADOW CLONE JUTSU

     BEAVER TRANSFORMATION

    PATH OF THE MOUNTAIN TECHNIQUE

    GRAVITY REVERSAL MODE

EYES OF ZOMM (If you get that reference, you are awesome, or just really nerdy)

Yes, our little party pony is just overflowing with potential.

Luckily she thinks in felt, so I doubt ponyville is in any sort of serious danger.  Hopefully her powers will be kept in check by this odd disability. Or maybe it's an advantage? Only time will tell I suppose...

We also have a ton of continuity in this episode.  These two made a comeback in the beginning.

And of course, nothing tops this.  Cereal said he actually clapped when this popped up. Cereal never claps, Cereal is serious business.  Rainbow Dash the egghead is the best thing ever.

    Especially this part.

We also learn about Pinkie Pie's literal... welcome wagon.   Always full of surprises.

    Twilight joins Facebook

And Cranky Doodle Donkey goes Johnny Bravo mode.

With a whopping four songs total, this was definitely one of the more musical episodes we have seen so far.   I'm sure "Smile Smile Smile" will be remixed to oblivion within the next week or so.  Even if it was leaked, I know a lot of musicians didn't modify it any until the higher quality track became available.

And I think that about covers it! I'm sure Pinkie Pie jumped up a few tiers on everyone's best pony lists. She seems to have found a good balance between obnoxious and just plain awesome.  Hopefully we get one more episode dedicated specifically to her by the end of the season!

    2. ...and you can hear this tiny voice shouting "wheeeeeeeeeee..."

      Well, not really.

      ReplyDelete
    3. The sunbathing pony (Apple Cobbler) was also KICKED IN THE FACE by Pinkie during the party in "A Bird in the Hoof."

    4. Too many impossible things...
But where's the part where Pinkie pulled Pinkie from the bottom of a dark cliff?

      ReplyDelete
    5. The way Doodle said 'Kid' reminded me of Bastion. Even the intonation matches perfectly.

    6. Pretty sure Pinkie is catching up to Discord with her level of reality warpage.

    7. Cranky just totally reminded me of Mr. Robinson from The Amazing World of Gumball, in voice and mannerisms.

    8. I was originally pretty apathetic about this episode after reading the summary but after watching it I absolutely loved it. Smile is probably the best song since Becoming Popular! I loved everything else!

    9. "I'm sure Pinkie Pie jumped up a few tiers on everyone's best pony lists."

Actually this episode knocked Pinkie down a bit on my best pony list. I like her in small doses, not as the centre of attention. Sort of the way spices make food better, but you can't eat them on their own.

    10. So it seems that everyone who didn't like the Super Speedy Cider Squeezy song loved Smile. Personally, the SSCS song floored me. Smile wasn't really doing it for me until the rest of the town joined in. From then on until the end it was incredible.

I don't quite get why everyone is freaking out about the cow drinking milk. In all honesty, it's not natural for an adult to drink milk of any species. I'm just writing this off as different cultural norms.

@Deucey Dee Nice interpretation. I was just thinking they were (from left to right) judge, mayor, secretary.

I don't know how I feel about the idea of them all being related. If any dynasty is going to run Ponyville, it should be the Apples, dangit!

Oh! And if we ever see Cranky again, I really hope he keeps some of his curmudgeonly attitude.

    11. Okay seriously.

Just the amount of creativity used in this episode made it worth watching. The callbacks to other episodes gave the whole thing a sense of permanency, the brief look inside Pinkie's head was genius, and the music was insanely high quality.

AND LETTER FROM PINKIE. Icing on the cake there.

Then again, this is par for the course by now with these guys.

    12. I swear, this series and season just gets better and better with every episode!

      ReplyDelete
    13. After watching the episode for the 3rd time... I just noticed what could be a Reboot reference. The "happy-sad-happy-sad" part at the beginning. Hex did the exact same thing.

      ReplyDelete
    14. ...I just wanted to choke Pinkie Pie to DEATH for what she did to CCD. I'm also a solitary creature by nature, and her inability to allow him to just live out his life...her lack of respect for his things and his wishes...Pinkie actually dropped in my "like" of her significantly.

      ReplyDelete
    15. Not to mention that was a very familiar Derpy image used in the snowglobe if you remember Lauren's sketch auctions...

      ReplyDelete
    16. Gotta love Pinkie's bandwagon.

      All aboard!

      ReplyDelete
    17. "Smile Smile Smile", the drug-free cure for depression!

      ReplyDelete
    18. Guys, what is the title of the grandest song in this episode? I thought it's "Smile, smile, smile!" just like it's stated here but ectweak quoted me this:

      "Daniel Ingram - Composer/Songwriter

Hi Everyone! The "Smile Song" and "Welcome Song" aired today."

      ReplyDelete
    19. @The Grey Potter

See, I thought that, too; but my friend said Johnny Bravo was the first person he thought of.

      ReplyDelete
    20. I just realized, the picture of the three ponies, flanked by Mayor Mare. From left to right: Judicial, Executive, Legislative!

      ReplyDelete
    21. Yea, this episode definitely pushed Pinkie up to my #2 favorite pony, though Twilight is still best pony IMO.

      ReplyDelete
    22. This episode only confirms what we already suspected: Pinkie Pie is a goddamn ninja. A superpowered, physics-ignoring, fourth wall-obliterating ninja. Body manipulation jutsus for things like hoof duplication and eye-resizing? Check. Teleportation jutsu? Check. Sticking-to-ceilings jutsu? Check. Transformation jutsu? Check. Kage bunshin jutsu? Check. Turn-imaginary-felt-items-into-real-items jutsu? Double check. I'm starting to think that Pinkie was actually supposed to be a top-tier character in Naruto or something, but accidentally wandered into the wrong series and didn't really care to leave. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. Ninja Pinkie is best Pinkie.

    23. @John Harris

DAAAAHAHAHA, you're right, I didn't notice that! Now we need to give the two new ones appropriate names that reflect their status as branches of the local Ponyville government. How about Fair Trial and Bill Draft?

    26. I love all this stuff I do, but why is Derpy mentioned where Manehatten should be mentioned. I mean he said Manehatten People!!! And Fillydelpia for that matter. Two Fanon cities just became Canon in this one episode. Two actual places in Equestria. I squealed when he said that, SQUEALED!! and I dont squeal. Surely im not the only one who noticed this? Right?

      ReplyDelete
    27. @Amazoness! Guy

"Waddle" and "wattle" are pronounced the same by most people.

I assume the intended name is Mr. Wattle, because he's an old dude and so probably has a wattle.

      Fanon cities?
      Manehattan and Fillydelphia?
Those aren't fanon. They are canon.

      ReplyDelete
    30. Pinkie didn't break the 4th wall this episode. She made it non-existant. Even a nuke would have left ashes of it. Pinkie left no trace at all. Not even an electron.

      ReplyDelete
    31. @Al_Skylark They Weren't canon until this episode. Did you not hear Cranky say that the snowglobe was from Manehatten and the Hearts Warming decoration was from Fillydelphia. Seriously man I really was the only one who heard that. Wow that surprises me how that got past eveypony else.

      ReplyDelete
    32. @Revokat Mallets can also be used for meetings and clubs, in this case she might be the equivalent of head of Parliament, or whatever it would be named. A mallet doesn't always stand for judging or punishment.

      ReplyDelete
    33. @TransYuuki

Uh...Celestia mentioned Fillydelphia in 'Perfect Swarm' and young Applejack visited Manehattan in 'Cutie Mark Chronicles'

      ReplyDelete
    34. Wasn't it "Cereal Clops to Reading Rainbow Dash" before?

      ReplyDelete
    35. @GoldenSandslash15
I'm guessing the harsh attitude in your post was meant jokingly? Anyway, there's a couple of problems with your list of problems (which should be expected when the Cutie Mark Crusaders are involved).

      2) Sethisto didn't say that cows were established as sentient in this episode, but that we "get a look into the other sentient beings", learning that "they have wages, and shop". (And I suspect "sapient" would be a better term in this context than "sentient", but that's nitpicking a nitpick.)

      4) The Derpy appearances you listed were unusual, but at least she was the same size in those shots. Her only previous appearance that was anywhere close to this odd was as a filly in "The Cutie Pox".

      5) His name is apparently Mr. Wattle, so you both missed that. ;) Also, I don't see anything wrong with mentioning him by his most recent appearance, as that's the one most fans will remember the best (especially with all the comments about priests and funerals and such that followed from his appearance).

      7) Berry Punch's hat in "Luna Eclipsed" is actually different enough from Daring Do's that I'm not convinced she was just dressed up as a generic explorer character. And Sethisto never said it was a callback to the character Daring Do; everyone else is calling it a callback to Rainbow Dash reading Daring Do books, so I'd guess that's what Sethisto was going for. (And speaking of RD the egghead, I'm a bit disappointed that EqD has yet to link to this comic.

      8) If Sethisto had mentioned that the new wig looked like Steven Magnet's hair, we'd have every 8th comment talking about no, it's Johnny Bravo's hair. ;)

And, of course, Pinkie's "Shadow Clone Jutsu" is just a screencap from an abstract representation of the chase scene, not an actual Pinkie power.

Good job on clarifying the other points, by the way!

      ReplyDelete
    36. @TransYuuki opps silly me. I take back what I said before. But those really werent canon cities until this episode and I watched all the episodes!! so yeah there canon now because of this episode, and if they were canon before you can just tell me when and where. Cuz i would really like to be informed about this.

      ReplyDelete
    37. @TransYuuki

I already told you where they were mentioned in canon. Fillydelphia is specifically said by Celestia herself in Swarm of the Century, and Manehattan is specifically said by Applejack in Cutie Mark Chronicles. They were canon way back in Season 1.

In theater terms, a character self narration (right before the felt scene) even though they may be addressing themselves is considered an "aside". Considering she was facing the camera during it, it's clearly a 4th wall moment.

    49. Pinkie was always first on my list, but this episode pretty much took that list, ripped it in half, and made her her own tier.

Smile Smile Smile was definitely worth the wait. Glad I didn't spoil it with the leak - though singing along at that moment would have been nice, too.

    50. Maybe Rose is her nickname, the toy based on her is called Rose Luck. Like Twilight, we know her full name but most of the time the other ponies just call her Twilight.

"In theater terms, a character self narration (right before the felt scene) even though they may be addressing themselves is considered an 'aside'."
      You're correct there.

"Considering she was facing the camera during it, it's clearly a 4th wall moment."
Not so fast! She was facing the camera. So what? Lots of characters look at the camera; it doesn't mean they see said camera/audience, nor are they addressing said audience.

Regarding her "aside," here's a quick definition:
      http://www.ldoceonline.com/Theatre-topic/aside_2

      1. words spoken by an actor to the people watching a play, that the other characters in the play do not hear
      2. a remark made in a low voice that you only intend particular people to hear

Pinkie was thinking out loud when she asked her question (watch the show; she does it all the time). This can be counted as an aside as example 2. The audience of the question? Herself.

This is an example 1 aside:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNa8QyAl2YE
He is clearly talking to the audience in this clip. The show also tends to "pause" to let him do his aside.
Also Dora the Explorer is full of them. She is talking TO the audience.

      Here's a somewhat example of 2:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WPiatO3OAo&t=33s
Of course Applejack is in this scene, and Rarity isn't really whispering quietly. She is still thinking aloud here, and Applejack can simply hear her. Her intended audience is most likely herself.

Summarizing: Pinkie is not saying "Hey audience! What just happened?!" She is merely thinking aloud. Once again, watch the show; Pinkie thinks aloud a LOT.

In fact, the only instance I can recall Pinkie breaking the 4th wall is in Swarm of the Century at the end:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGeo-9apZD8&t=21m23s
By the rules, this can actually be argued as not breaking the 4th wall, but let's not pull hairs. She is playing the dreary tune to mark the end of the episode to pretty much say "That's All Folks!" It can be argued that she is just playing it in-universe, but it looks like she is completely separate from the mane 6, and is playing the tune purely for our amusement.

      ReplyDelete
    54. You know there is one thing that has jumped into my head, in the episodes leading up to this. I get strangest feeling that NO ONE can run away from Pinkie Pie if she is chasing you alone, you know why? She out runs Rainbow Dash (The fasts FLIER in Ponyville) and gets to where she was heading before hand in 2 deferent episodes, now she did it to C.D.D (Cranky Doodle Donkey)... Now after Applejack broke that Pinkie Promise (episode 14, finding a loop hole counts as breaking it to me) and if Pinkie was the only one chasing her. How far do you think she would get before Pinkie made her pay for breaking her promise. Then she would given her a REAL cupcake (AKA Hoof) to the eye.

Then again it makes this fanFic even more epic.
      http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/05/story-truth-about-pinkie-pie.html
Check it out if you haven't already.

Maybe someday they well give us a episode explaining why Pinkie can do the things she does (Turning your head 720 degrees for one in episode 16 ), and it better not be because she eats so much sugary sweets.... I have tried that, it doesn't work. Hope she is like discord, but she would be the Mischief Mare XD or this picture which would be totally epic
      http://fav.me/d4aoqs1

O and the smiles song… I LOVE IT even tho I heard it before.
Pinkie Pie picking up the 2 foals and rocketing them away, epic foal napping with a ‘smiles’ and Big Mac driving the getaway chart LOL
And I sure some of you didn’t notice that near the end of the Smile song were all the ponies were in the big circle, a yellow mane grayish earth pony was between BonBon and Lyra, then right after that scene they change positions so that BonBon was right next to Lyra instead, suggestive isn’t it. LOVING IT LoL

      ReplyDelete
    55. @ReDash

Thanks. I've been racking my brain trying to figure out where I heard that voice before, now I have a name to place it to.

It was a wondeful episode, Studio B and the rest certainly out did themselves.

      ReplyDelete
    56. @Equinenox
Actually, during the iris out of both "The Elements of Harmony" and "Over a Barrel", Pinkie directly addresses the audience.

      ReplyDelete
    57. @jodyjm13
      Ah yes.

Swarm of the Century was the only one that came to mind at the time of typing that comment. That was the episode where I thought Pinkie interacts with the Iris-Out. I was wrong with a quick recheck. After that, I couldn't remember where she pulls the Iris-Out to fit through it.

Mare in the Moon can certainly count as 4th wall, but we can be sure about The Last Roundup.
The reason here is how she interacts with a part of the show that indicates it's a cartoon. You guys know the rest.

What I'd like to see is a higher-level 4th wall breakage. Sure she's indicating this is a show, but what if she indicated there was a network? What if she's running across the screen, and trips over the Hub logo that at the bottom of the screen. It then disappears indicating a commercial break. She looks up in confusion (looking at the audience is optional).

I do believe Family Guy did a joke like this. They had a joke about upcoming shows with generic examples like "Shovin' Buddies" and "Slowly Rotating Black Man." It's the first time I've laughed at a Family Guy joke in ages.

    60. Seth, you Derpo! Rose's name was said all the way back in season 1, episode 9 "Bridle Gossip"! Daisy (official name) says "Look Rose! How awful!". Then Rose says "The wicked enchantress has cursed them all!" Finally, Lily (still a fan name) says "The horror, the horror!". Twilight knocks on Daisy's door shortly after and says "Daisy, we need to talk."

    63. I kind of find it funny that on a weekly basis, the complainers just come and say their bit on the episode discussions then pretty much disappear with these followups. I think people who jump the gun on dissing this show often 'cool down' a few days after the episodes. I just find that funny and kind of cute.

      ReplyDelete
    64. if I'm not mistaken, Cranky Doodle Donkey's character is modeled after Walter Matthau. That thick black hairstyle, those droopy-saggy facial features, that gruff but endearing voice, and a sarcastic wit all remind me of the veteran actor.

When he speaks though I can't help but imagine Rhinox from Transformer: Beast Wars being pestered by Pinkie Pie LOL

    70. So, as of right now, Smile Smile Smile has been stuck in my head since 7 AM yesterday morning. It has officially supplanted Winter Wrap-Up as the biggest earworm of the show for me, and I am loving every minute of it.

Also, I'm kinda suprised with all the other continuity nods in this episode that no one mentioned Gilda. At all. I know her situation was different than Cranky's, but a whole episode centered around someone refusing Pinkie's friendship and no reference to the only other being to do so?

      ReplyDelete
    71. @Kether Oh, good, I'm not the only one who noticed.

    74. I still can't figure out the last lyrics of that last song of hers.

      "He's her cranky doodle sweetheart
      She's his cranky doodle joy
      I've got a cranky doodle X, Y
      I've got a cranky doodle X!"

      I can't decypher what X and Y are here.

    76. This was just another episode that teaches if someone isn't doing what you want just keep pressuring them until they give. (See also The Last Roundup, Dragonshy, and even Mare Do Well.)

I'm really tired of this premise. I would like there to for ONCE be an episode where despite someone trying to force their will on someone else it doesn't work out and they learn a lesson from THAT.

I was actually really annoyed that not only did Pinkie never learn to leave someone alone who's not interested, but that she was still rewarded in the end with everything she wanted even after harassing Doodle (which was NEVER going to stop) when repeatedly asked to cease and desist.

      ReplyDelete
    77. Best. Episode. EVER!! Tons of awesome fourth wall breakage, four great songs, and Pinkie Pie just being Pinkie Pie. :) Smile, Smile, Smile has actually been my favorite song for a while now, but now it's official!! :D

    79. I loved the extra photographic and animation details in the "Smile" musical number - like the lens flare, and the way Pinkie's lighting is lowered when she's close to the camera. And when she spins around near the end, she doesn't just turn stiffly, she ducks her head as she spins and ends with a flourish. Very impressive.

    80. To avoid making premature judgments, I tend to watch episodes a couple of times and subconsciously mull things over before I leave any comments. I'm glad I upheld this routine — subsequent viewings significantly improved my opinion on this episode.

My initial thoughts on this episode were mixed. I absolutely adored the brilliant song (Smile!), the continuity nods, the unexpected medium shift gag and the interesting new characters. I also thoroughly enjoyed the story in spite of its predictable resolution. What irked me was Pinkie's insensitive behavior in certain scenes. With her persistent and intrusive attempts to befriend Cranky, I couldn't help but to share Cranky's frustration. Although, argumentatively, the fact that those scenes could elicit such an emotion from a viewer might actually be evidence of good writing. Or perhaps I was just being an ass. :/

Nevertheless, any gripes I had with this episode dissipated after subsequent viewings. 'Psychological' reasons aside, I suppose that being less concerned with the direction of the story, I was able to focus more on the subtle animation details and appreciate the comedic nature of the interactions between Pinkie and Cranky for what it is. Incidentally, these are some of the most outstanding aspects of the episode. With a change of perspective, I also came to appreciate Pinkie's effort in going all out to cheer up the bitter-looking newcomer in town. If anything, the party pony has certainly grown on me as a character.

As it stands, I am really impressed with this episode. Cranky Doodle, you are definitely not the only jackass smiling now. :)

    81. I can say, this totally is my favorite Pinkie Pie episode. Plus 'Smile' was just a purely fantastic song. It's just the most fun my ears have had in a long time. The hyjinks in this episode were just sooo fun to watch and totally had me laughing along the whole way. I was never more glad to see that much pink in my whole life!

    82. I know it’s a little late (only hours before the next episode) but I really wanted to say this: I never thought an episode centering on Pinkie Pie could do justice to her character. See, she’s great at explosive entries and epic randomness. But as seen in “Feeling Pinkie Keen,” it seems harder to keep up that explosive vibe when you keep her onscreen. I’m no animation buff, or screenwriter, or artist of any kind; but I figured that doing an episode that keeps that “Pinkie awesome” going for the full show would be very taxing on the creators. They pulled it off however, and I just want to give kudos to the creators of the show for doing the “impossible”. Shows how much I know!
      ...yes I posted this elsewhere.
yes, I'm sorry for the double post.

    83. Pinkie Pie is WORST pony.

As of this episode, she's right down the bottom of my list of how much I like the show's characters.

Throughout the episode I kept wanting to punch her, or at least have one of the other characters do it. Did it ever happen? Nope. Instead we get some horrible Aesop of "you can get anything you want if you're sufficiently annoying".

    84. I suspect the oldster’s name is “Wattle”—defined by Wiktionary as “[l]oose hanging skin in the neck of a person”, and usually seen on older people whose skin has loosened with age.
