• Discussion: Create a side series!

Once again, Hasbro has come to YOU for advice on their new pony side series that specifically focuses on a single pony.  They want it to target the younger male demographic this time around, so hearts and hugging may be something to avoid!

Do you expand upon Daring Do?  Exploring ancient temples littered with traps while being chased down by Nazis? (Please no aliens...)

Or maybe you want to follow one of the mane cast on an epic adventure across Equestria?

The choice is yours!   Choose a pony, and summarize your idea.

    1. Daring Do is a real pony, she runs into Trixie who becomes the annoyingly lovable sidekick.

    2. Any Popular Background Character. You know what, all background characters in one side series.

    3. I believe Doctor Whoof and Derpy time traveling shenanigans could easily include ALL of these options.

I hear issue about copyright issues with Dr. Who, but beyond the name, what issue would there be? Surely a pony with the ability to travel through time and space (at will? unintentionally? slowly learns how to control it?) wouldn't get anyone into trouble. To me, that's like saying there's copyright issues between Dr. Who and The Time Traveler's Wife, or any time traveling thing - whichever came first. So we have a space-and-time traveling pony that can take other ponies (Derpy) with him. I don't think there should be any problems.

With Dr. Whoof and Derpy misadventures, we can see the beginnings of Equestria, the early days of Celestia/Luna, maybe meet the original inspiration for Daring Do (I just don't see Daring Do standing on her own...) maybe we can learn more about Zecora's origins and how/why she came to Ponyville, maybe some Everfree forest stuff, and see Discord's reign.

With Dr. Whoof and Derpy as the backbone, all the other things everyone wants to see can be incorporated. It would be amazing :)

    4. So we already have Daring Do, how bout a new pony, a sly stallion named Bond, Manes Bond (insert better name here)

      ReplyDelete
    5. Well,a prequel of the actual series centered on Celestia past would be good.

    6. Daring Do, I would love a series like that.

I think it should contain humor, adventure and fantasy like MLPFiM but add mystery and thrill!
I would definatly read this if this was a book. (which I think it would be best as..) If you need ideas, we already have some fan-fics. (I'm not suggesting taking it.. but use it, to get a feel for the fanbase..)

    7. Well some friends and I DID come up with an idea for a side series, more of a dream really. Was a lot like the normal show but less...moral-y I guess. And it focused on the background ponies...I think we picked Derpy, Dr. Hooves, Vinyl, Octavia, Lyra, and Bon Bon. No life lessons, just ponies being awesome and probably doing stupid things a lot...

      ReplyDelete
    8. I'd love to see a Daring Do spinoff. Alternatively, something involving Princess Luna could be awesome too- we haven't seen much of her overall, so maybe she's been having some badflank adventures out in the world somewhere.

      ReplyDelete
    9. Whist I do love the idea of a Doctor Hooves series with Derpy as his assistant, legal reasons would stop that from happening.

So instead I'll agree with Daring Do as the best choice for a standalone series. It's easily the best setting to appease a more action-oriented crowd. Easily episodic and so many myths could inspire adventures.

    10. Lyra's Teen Life? Bon Bon, Vinyl and some other ponies as the supporting cast.

      ReplyDelete
    11. We definitely need more about Daring do being lightly narrated by Rainbow dash, I'd also really like to see the chronicles of The Great And Powerful Trixy.

      ReplyDelete
    12. I support the idea of a prequel series with Celestia and Luna trying to take down Discord. The final episode/season could be Luna's descent to the dark side, and her eventual banishment to the moon!

      ReplyDelete
    13. Young male demographic you say...

A Spike coming of age series would be nice >:3

      ReplyDelete
    14. Ok for the younger male audience I'd suggest either Daring Doo or something involving a new male pony. The new male pony would probably be best since the mane cast of FiM could guest star and he could show up in Ponyville including as a background character.

Much like Daring Doo I think said series should be quest based. Focus on the world of Equestria outside Ponyville, Canterlot and the Everfree Forest but with the occational scene/episode in those three places.

Supporting cast I'd say the hero should have companions, one male and one female (typical quest team layout) with a few semi regulars from FiM. Zecora could be... herself, Twilight could be an occational source of knowledge and Luna could be the one giving them their quests (having something similar to Celestia's role in FiM). Also this show can have a selection of regular villains, a rogue's gallery if you will.

I think a show like this would be perfect for Hasbro's interests. The younger boys being interested in the protagonist and his adventures and the bronies and younger girls being interested in the exploration of the show's universe and more attention given to supporting characters like Luna and Zecora.

    15. The story of Zecora's life before she came to Ponyville

      ReplyDelete
    16. @Hmnhtr but I love the sappy stuff of the show. D:

Daring-Do or RD will be an awesome character for a side serie with the same good animation of the original show and a good story. :D

      ReplyDelete
    17. Trixie and her Quest to become the Greatest Equine who ever lived!

Dungeon delving for lost relics, searching for teachers and trying to get training, helping out individuals in distress.

Always being under cut by her overestimation of her skills and bravado.

      ReplyDelete
    18. "The Everyday Lives of Lyra and Bon-Bon"

And by "everyday lives" I mean that Lyra uses a spell to give herself hands in the first episode and it turns out to be irreversible. Hilarity ensues.

      ReplyDelete
    19. Personally, I think the mane 6 work well because they're together, and separately they just wouldn't be all that entertaining.

A Daring Do side-series, on the other hand, could be amusing.

      ReplyDelete
    20. Seriuously guys, Daring Doo? Haven't you watched cartoons while you were kid? Wich one were your favorite? I mean, I enjoyed:
      1.Avatar; the last airbender;
      2.Pokemon;
      3.Dragon Ball;
      4.Naruto;
      5.Bleach;
      6.One Piece;
      7.etc.
Do you know what they all have in common: they got new powers (new pokemons = new powers).
Wtf power will Daring Doo get?
As for doctor whooves, will he travel to equestria history or human history? Create a whole new history may be too troublesome and full of holes. Use human history won't make any sense since mlp:fim don't fit any timeline.
If Hasbro would bet in a pony who gets stronger, i guess a unicorn is the best. And since is for BOYS, how about a MALE pony? IMHO The legend of Starswirl, the beard is the best show for the boys.

      ReplyDelete
    21. All of the non~pony characters talking about their families and where they came from! The largest sector would be about Zecora of course, but Gilda would reappear too. Not for her sake, just for the griffin plot.

      ReplyDelete
    22. I think a show centering around Hooves would make an excellent idea for a show, but without the baggage that Dr. Who homage would bring. My idea centers around a clandestine group of Ponies called the Timekeepers(equal parts Freemasons and MI6 - Gives an explanation of why so many ponies have the hourglass cutie mark). Hooves was an observer, but due to his exemplary work on the Elements of Harmony case has graduated to field agent. Despite being a medical doctor and a master detective Hooves has no clue about being a man of action. Through an incredible set of circumstances pertaining to his first case he enlists the help of the author of the Daring Do books. She, Inkamina Pie (sister of Pinky- ties back to FIM) is under pressure from her publishers for another best seller. She feels that she is running out of ideas after her proposal for a Mare-do-Well series is met with a demand for more Daring Do books. Inky sees an opportunity to help the slightly awkward agent Hooves find his inner hero as a goldmine for her writing career never knowing the trouble it was going to bring her. Add a cast of regulars including Derpy, Trixie, Fancy Pants(Hooves' boss), Luna, and an occasional appearance by Mare-do-Well, and you have the makings of a decent show.

      ReplyDelete
    23. daring-do could definatly be one
      or a pinkie party show
      or a derpy show series
      SO MANY IDEAS

      ReplyDelete
    24. I think it would be AWESOME to have a talk show with Octavia and Vinyl, maybe with guest host appearances of Lyra and Bon-Bon.

      ReplyDelete
    25. Personally I would LOVE to see a series following Trixie and her antics. I'm not sure if it would be targeted to specifically boys per say but I'm sure bother genders could appreciate an egotistical pony getting into antics.

Or perhaps a side series focusing in on the villans in general? Each episode could focus on a pony that barely gets seen on the real show. What crazy adventures do they get into?

      ReplyDelete
    26. Daring Doo would be great idea.

Another one would be a series involving Princess Luna and Princess Celestia. So we can learn how they came to be the rulers of equastria and the enemies they had to defeat which the mane6 had to deal with in FIM. I think this would provide answers to the questions that fans are asking involving the history of Equestria and the Royal Sisters. Including the question of where did Celestia and Luna come from?

They could also include characters that have been mentioned in the show like Starswirl the Bearded for example.
Pretty much it would a like the new star wars movies, where in the original movies we followed Luke in his fight against the empire and in the new movies we followed Obi Wan and Anakin. Another example would be The Mummy Returns and The Scorpion King.

As long as it involves a character from the original series.

    28. Gilda Griffon and the quest for cool friends.

      ReplyDelete
    29. Well, here's my idea: somehow Twilight manages to accidentally conjure a human child into Equestria. This child, in turn, accidentally releases Discord, who kidnaps the child to use for his own purposes (having to to with the fact that the only creature who can surpass him when it comes to spreading conflict is a human being). Twilight and friends must rescue the child and send him/her back to his/her world, while leaving the possibility open that the child could continue to somehow communicate with them and/or return someday.

      And that's it. :)

      ReplyDelete
    30. They're actually better off with making a Dr. Whooves side series with one of the already side characters (not mane 6).

Reasoning. 1) Though Derpy is freakin' amazing, nopony who doesn't already watch the show will not take it seriously enough to watch. 2) Daring Do would seem like a good choice, however compared to Doctor Whooves, it would feel a bit dis-connected to the FiM due to it taking place within it's own little world while Doctor Whooves has already been established as a character in FiM. 3) Choosing most of the other side-characters will not do as well as connecting to a younger male audience. 4) Doctor Who, though technically not a show for 5 year olds, contains enough action, adventure, and comedy for a younger audience to be appealed to.

Conclusion: Even though other side-characters have potential for a good side series, Doctor Whooves is the only one that can not only attract a younger male audiance, but also possibly convert Whovians (who are not already)into bronies.

    32. Oh my gosh! would be so freaking awesome.

How about a male colt meets rainbow dash they race and hang out. and maybe Fluttershy tries to interrupt them a lot of times but it didn't stop RD and the colt from doing things?

That might make a good episode.

    33. Actully I have something else to say.

Daring doo side series of everybook that Rainbow reads. But Rainbow isn't reading it actully is a Daring doo side series.

Or another MLP Side series with the beta versions of MLP:FIM

      ReplyDelete
    34. It's funny they are asking about this... Last night I was thinking about Daring Do and how I'd love to see more of her. I think she would make an awesome side series in some way. Like, maybe novels or a spinoff show based around her adventures.

If not her, it would probably be best to go with Applejack or Rainbow Dash as main characters since they're the most athletic of them all and likely wouldn't be considered off-putting by young males despite them being girls.

Either way, they would have to be written as good as the show we know and love to be as appealing and entertaining as ever.

Well, time for me to go send Hasbro a message!

      ReplyDelete
    35. Wait what's a "Side Series"? Like a whole new show with some characters implemented from MLP:FIM?

      ReplyDelete
    36. Actually, err, wait a sec... Where's the source to this that they are asking for ideas on a "side series" of sorts? I don't want to bug Hasbro when I know they are likely flooded with MLP messages as it is. I'd feel bad.

      ReplyDelete
    37. I think Luna's transition into Nightmare Moon and subsequent battle vs Celestia (and company) would make for an appealing young men's series.

I remember when I was that age, Power Rangers, Ninja Turtles, Pokemon, Dragonball Z, and Sailor Moon (that last one was just recently declassified) were the shows I was watching, so conflict with good characterization (and special effects!) are what would keep viewers.

      ReplyDelete
    38. Ok, I can't deny the idea of a Daring Do series would be awsome, lots of info about Equestria and the Mytical creatures that live there. The relations with the Griffon, Dragons, Zebras and other civilizations. That sounds Awsome.

But I would also suggest as "The Wonderbolts", a serie based in the adventures and missions of the famous team. Having to deal with secret missions, public apperances, defending Equestrians from the dangers of the Everfree and other villains trying to take over Equestria.

A Third choice would be "Equestrian Heroes", serie of stories based in characters outside the mane 6 (Like Barebrum, Big Macintosh), and historcal figures, like Starswirl the Bearded, Commander Hurricane, etc) and the background character (Like Golden harvest, Heartsrings, Rose, Daisy and Lily). Where every one of them had a mayor role in the Equestrian History even if they are not aware of.

Of course I would die to see an Official "Dr. Whooves and Assistant" serie. But probably that would be a lot of copyright issues.

    39. I would love a daring do side-series but if they choose that just skip the last movie pls

      ReplyDelete
    40. Luna and Celestia living their lives and doing their royal... stuff. I think this has the most to be revealed from a spinoff.

      ReplyDelete
    41. As much as I want a Daring Do series, I think a backstory to Discord or a Mare-do-well series would be better. Discord is the brother of Celestia and Luna and his life spirals into chaos until it consumes him entirely, changing him into whateverthedragonlookingthingis. Also, who wouldn't want to see him cause more chaos?
A Mare-do-well series would also be a good idea. Discord or somepony else attempts to make the Mane 6 turn to crime and only Rainbow Dash is left due to being the Element of Loyalty. Now with her friends as some of the most infamous criminals in all of Equestria, Rainbow Dash steals the Mare-do-well Suit from Rarity's Botique and attempts to bring her friends to justice. I already have an idea for the cast.
      Rainbow Dash: Mare-do-well/Batmare (Batman)
      Twilight: Librarian (Riddler)
      Scootaloo: Butler (Alfred)
Applejack: No idea for the name, but she'd make a good Penguin-like villain.
Fluttershy: Robin or Dr. Flutter Shyes (Robin or Mr. Freeze)
Big Mac: Same with Applejack, but how about Bane?
Pinkie: Something Joker or Harley related.
Rarity: Something like Scarecrow. Maybe Dr. Hooves would do better.
      Derpy: Somebody like Zsasz.
Lyra: Mad Hatter-like. (Obsession with humans; obsession with Alice.)
DJ P0N3: Deadshot or Ra's Al Ghul.
      Octavia: Talia
      Mr./Mrs. Cake: Clayface
      Bon Bon: Two Face
I've got to write this fic.

    42. A friend had a good idea to set it in an area or a time when harmony hasn't been reestablished, that way you can have more adventurous things happening or antagonists trying to exploit things.

I half-imagine with a Hearth's Warming Eve you can almost make A Song of Fire and Ice conflict for power with ponies.

I love the ideas so far, so I made a post on how one might go about realistically making them in the follow-up.

Myself, no matter the show, it has to start with characters first. My personal favorite idea is to make Luna's school because she's an interesting, flawed character with her mistakes in the past to teach from and then create main characters of young unicorns with flaws and humor without trying to recreate FiM.

      ReplyDelete
    43. The wonderbolts are cool however anything with them would be to cliche A team of amped up crusaders saving the world hmmmm, where have i heard that before ...? Really daring Do probably would be something to try with good writers and ACTION, although i fear the Indiana Jones solo theme would bomb whatever it is needs a supporting cast then it might work, I think Dr hooves would be to close to a copyright infringement. Honestly I would try something With New characters lots of cameos .....

    44. This can't be serious.
...No. No, this is just playing around.
      OK.

I think Derring-Do would do well for that. Would need the right marketing. It would be kind of difficult to make totally original ideas, though.

How "young" is this supposed male demographic? That's my real question about all of this. I can't give a more accurate answer than "Derring-Do" until I know.

    46. As much as I would love to leap at the possibility of seeing Derpy/Whooves get some canon love, I must admit that Daring Do would be far more interesting especially if they're looking to target the young male demographic a little more solidly. Daring Do gives us a strong female character who is capable and badass in her own right, without any of the stereotypical trappings of "feminine adventurers". She would NOT be a Lara Croft, and that's the most important thing! This would challenge the heteronormative poison that has pigeon-holed our youth with GREAT effect, as long as they continue to respect the intelligence of their viewers. Maybe focusing on making a "Good Show All Around" rather than a "Good Show for Boys/Girls". That's why we love MLP, after all: The Great Faust Herself set out to make a show that was inherently good in its own right, and then had to make it 'girlier' to meet shareholder demands. I think that if we don't focus on the gender prejudices, this could be something really great.

And who knows! Maybe this show could serve as a platform for even more side-character exposition!

Y'know, this whole thing makes me think back to big traditional production studios like Warner Brothers--remember Animaniacs? Tiny Toon Adventures? Freakazoid? Pinkie and the Brain? It's all one world, with cameos and crossovers galore. I can't help but feel the urge to dream of such a future for Hasbro.

You do realize that Hasbro owns Dungeons and Dragons, Right? Yeah. There is a LOT of potential for amazing stuff to happen, here.

      ReplyDelete
    47. I think Daring Do would be fine, but just not on a weekly basis. You guys whine and complain like babies for seeing ONE character episode by saying "WHY is ____'s episode yet?" or whining like crazy about how a certain character episode didn't compare well to one another.

Well, I hate whiners in general especially in this fandom that just sounds extremely entitled and spoiled to me. That said, I wouldn't exactly want Daring Do on every single episode. Maybe they can feature her occasionally followed by adventures of ponies from other cities or even other background characters of Ponyville or even Canterlot. Hell, if they even do a series on ponies only on Canterlot or Phillydelphia, it'd be a total blast either way. But I suppose for side characters, they can find a way to be more disjointed and have totally separate stories if they wanted to. Like have a Daring Do episode, some character from Canterlor, Phillydelphia, Manehatten or any other city. How it all 'ties up together', I don't know, but it'd just be nice to have those stories being told, even if they're not directly connected. That's what side stories are supposed to be able to afford for being side stories.

      ReplyDelete
    48. Derring Do with a younger 'Short Stuff' char (Pip) to go through a few of the pulp fiction books that dashie is reading through.

      ReplyDelete
    49. Either a Daring Do show with her globetrotting around the world Indiana Jones/Jackie Chan Adventures style finding treasures, tackling dungeons, competing with her rivals like her sister Derring, Lady Heartnote, Bravado, Springer, Ac & Dc or stopping the mechanations of the evil Auizothl, the devious Prof. Seara, The Trapmasters, the Order of the Unseen Eye or the mysterious Lord and Lady Iron Claw.

Or maybe a comedy based off that comic by Madmax about the Missadventures of Derpy and the Griffin King. Where she tries to help restore the once great Grifphon Empire to it's former Glory(namely one week before she showed up)while the king just tries to get rid of her before something else burns to the ground.

If they wanted a more toy-otic angle they could probabley make an adventure spin off staring some of the blindbag/recolours undertaking an adventure that takes them across Equestria in search of treasure or by royal decree.

I'd suggest something akin to "It's Dangerous Going Outside Your Door" but I kinda see that as a movie or season arc. Though it would be killer to see something like that made.

Also a CMC tiered series might work if done correctly.

      ReplyDelete
    50. As mentioned earlier I want the Applejack rodeo show.

    51. @ultra8
Extra points if it's Rainbow shown reading and changing between the books. Even cooler if it shows her mixing stuff up once in awhile because she's trying to read more than one book or genre like Dariing and Mare-do-well teaming up because she's trying to read a Daring Do book and a comic at the same time.

      ReplyDelete
    52. Daring Do would be awesome.
      wonderbolt adventures would be cool.

      ReplyDelete
    53. DERPY! (Yes, I'm just going to yell out Derpy and not back it up with any idea.)

On another note, I think they should give Colgate a toothbrush cutie mark and make a deal with whoever owns Colgate Toothpaste to make the name cannon. :D

      ReplyDelete
    54. If we consider that it targets the younger male demographic, I think expanding on mare do-well or one of the tougher characters(daring do is one candidate) will make for a good action series.

Or having one of the smarter ponies play a detective role, I think everyone likes a good detective series. And ponies just make it better.

One caveat is that the main cast of FiM must not make an appearance anywhere, at least not early-on in the series.

      ReplyDelete
    55. "One caveat is that the main cast of FiM must not make an appearance anywhere, at least not early-on in the series."

I don't know. They could probably find a way to show that connection to the Mane 6 and the rest of the Pony world and then decide to branch from there.

Or do something hilarious like making the Mane 6 and FiM characters into total background characters with only passing lines (like background characters usually do).

    56. Make one about Pipsqueak, drawing from comics like Calvin and Hobbes and Yotsubato! Pipsqueak would be an energetic young filly who loves adventure, so he turns even everyday chores into adventure using his imagination. ReplyDelete
    64. I soon as I saw Daring-Do I knew that would make a good spin-off. A strong female lead going on adventures fighting Aztec gods? Sign me up!!

But personally I would also like to see the Alicorn sisters fighting Discord and the like and the eventual heartbreaking betrayal as Luna turns to the dark side. Though that would probably make a better movie/special than a series.

And although I like Dr. Whooves and Derpy fanon I think a series wouldn't be good. Unless it was all history. Because the second Alien-Ponies show up I think the show's done for.

    65. I dunno what ponies would be involved but.. Pirates. 'Nuff said.

      ReplyDelete
    66. My suggestion would be the Wonderbolts.

the show has established that the Wonderbolts are essentially the Equestrian air force. They could have any number of action packed adventures, protecting Equestria from the griffin threat, or fighting dragons. and they could easily have cross overs with the regular show.

The Wonderbolts really just need a villain and you could wright a really good set up and adventures with an action oriented team.

    67. League of Extraordinary Ponies (or Magnificent League of Ponies aka "MLP")
Doctor Whooves would be the Nemo figure, Daring Doo would be much like Tom Sawyer, Derpy I guess would be a sort of (extra) comic relief?
Screw that, just have Doctor Whooves & Co. Explore the rest of the Hasbro Universe, i.e. what male audiences (young and old) enjoy- Transformers, GI Joe, Battleship, etc.

      ReplyDelete
    68. the show desperately needs some history to explain! come on, how about the origin of cutie marks, alicorns or the things that happened before luna's banishment. or an episode dedicated directly to both alicorns and their interactions with the realm and others?

      ReplyDelete
    69. Derpy & Daring combo... How? Derpy/Ditzy is Daring's Daughter!!!!!! We could see Derpy/Ditzy as a little filly going with her mom on amazing adventures etc.

      ReplyDelete
    70. "DASH": Rainbow Dash is finally confident enough in her acrobatic repertoire to try and get the attention of the Wonderbolts... to do so, she needs to put together a top-notch Pit Crew and then win big on the Grand Equestrian Race Circuit.

Episodes are "Speed Racer-ish", with wild adventures, plots and villains constantly getting in the way of her quest for fame.

    73. For me it's gotta be one of three:

      Doctor Whooves And Derpy
      Daring Do
      Trixie's Adventures

Any of them would be awesome :D

    74. Probably been said , but just repackage the male sports loving theme from the 'Tales' series. Its an easy simple formula to craft something with and carries non of the baggage of being seen as a cheap parody knock off of Indian Jones/Lara Croft/Dr Who/ect...

    75. My personal opinion: Lunar Revolution.

The prequel from 1000 years ago, told in much more detail. Grief and solitude gave birth to a dark being that conquered the Princess' soul. Celestia's army marching against Luna's citadel, creatures of shadow summoned to defend the Dark Princess, who keeps the Sky hostage, as temperature is dropping and plants wilt without light. Siege begins, but the time is on the Dark Sister's side, as without the Sun everything will eventually freeze.

So: Research into powerful magic that could stop the darkness. Search, Chases and Battles for the Elements of Harmony. Clashing magic of the sisters turning beautiful woods of Everfree into the monstrosity it is today. Final battle in the sky above freezing, snow-covered Equestria leading to final imprisonment of Nightmare Moon.

    76. Here are a couple of ideas:

      1. A pony police procedural about the Canterlot City Guard keeping honest ponies safe.

      2. Thirty years into the future, Equestria is dragged into World War II, with Princess Luna filling the role of Equestria's Winston Churchill.

    78. I am personally excited by that new episode, Dragon Quest. I think THAT could totally be a side series. Just have Spike leave home for some reason and have him travel with another, much older, dragon as he explores Equestria and beyond while growing and maturing, both physically and mentally\emotionally. It would be a great way to show off the world, so we bronies would love it to no end (although that probably isn't a concern for you), and it would have a male lead character. You guys have already come up with some awesome action scenes when you showed off new land and creatures (like in May The Best Pet Win) so it would probably be easy to make it action based. In fact, you might not even have ponies in it at all, but that's REALLY up to you.
