Someone named Daniel from the Save Derpy Tumblr recently CC'd us in a conversation with Amy Keating Rogers. I was a bit skeptical at first, but after contacting her from her website directly, it does appear to be legit. I asked her if it would be alright to post her response to the Derpy Controversy here on EQD, and she was more than happy to help us finally dispel all of these nasty rumors going around.
After the break, you will find the entire email response. It's a long one, so get your reading glasses on!
Whew, this controversy has been overwhelming and exhausting!
I actually had no idea that fans were really upset about the "Derpy Change" until your email. And I didn't actually know about the change until I got an email last week from a fan telling me about it!
Let me try and put some rumors at rest and calm the fans. And to do that, let's go back to the beginning.
When I first wrote this episode, the character under such harsh scrutiny was named Ditzy Doo. We had already established in previous episodes that she was clumsy (she is not the pony you want on your moving crew). And we named her Ditzy Doo thinking of her as a being a bit dingy.
The scene I wrote was originally longer and had a flashback explaining exactly what Ditzy Doo had done to damage Town Hall. She and Rainbow Dash were "Bucking Bolts" out of the clouds during a storm. Ditzy Doo was bucking too close to Ponyville central. Rainbow kept trying to yell over the noisy bucking for Ditzy to move away from town. But Ditzy could not hear her and thought that Rainbow was complimenting her for her great buck bolting. Ditzy then hit Town Hall with a bolt. And, thus, the damage.
For the second draft, I was asked to change Ditzy's name to Derpy as a "tip of the hat" to the fans. So, not knowing that Derpy meant anything beyond klutzy and clumsy, I did as requested And then I was finished with this episode.
I had nothing to do with the original voice casting. In my mind, she was ditzy, as her original name implied. But that's not anything I was ever involved with MLP. The scene was made shorter because the script was too long and because the story wasn't about Ditzy/Derpy. It was about Applejack.
When this episode first aired, I did not see it until after I started getting emails either thanking me or berating me for Derpy's portrayal. The angry emails really freaked me out because I knew that I had not written a scene that could possibly be interpreted as being insensitive to people with disabilities.
So, when I got home, I watched the episode. I saw that the scene was shorter, which did not surprise me. That happens all the time. I listened to her voice and it was deeper than I expected. However, I was not offended by any part of the scene in any way.
But I got about 10 emails saying how offended folks were. People labeled me an "ableist" (a word I'd never heard of) and said that I was being insensitive to the disabled by calling this character "derpy." I then did a search on what derpy meant and the first things that came up were "embarrassing" and "awkward" which is what I thought. But then when I did more in-depth searches, I discovered that one definition is "retarded."
Now, you have to realize that reading that made my heart sink. My son Soren (of Soarin' fame) is severely disabled. We do not use the word "retarded" in our house because it really has become an offensive slur. And while I knew that it was only a minority of people that defined "derpy" this way, it still upset me that I was the writer that put that name out there. It was painfully ironic and goes against the fact that I'm an advocate for the disabled.
I also want to note here that while I got 10 negative emails, I also got about 200 positive ones! I knew that the majority of fans were not offended. I got emails from fans with siblings with disabilities and parents of kids with disabilities and fans who had disabilities themselves and none of them were offended. At first, I tried to answer all these emails, but then I just became too overwhelmed. Still, I want to thank you all for your support!
But I was not the only one getting contacted regarding Derpy's portrayal. Positive and negative feedback was also being sent to Hasbro and the Hub. Someone at the Hub who knows about my personal connection with disabilities contacted me asking my opinion. We talked about various options of what to do.
1. Do nothing.
2. Cut Rainbow saying "Derpy" but keep Derpy's voice.
3. Cut Rainbow saying "Derpy" and change Derpy's voice.
4. Find a creative way to change Derpy's name in a future episode
And I was honestly torn about which action should be taken. I went back and forth and back again. It was a no win situation. Fans were going to be offended no matter what. And while I was not personally offended by the scene, I tried to put myself in the shoes of someone that was. I know that if I was offended by something that I thought was disparaging against the disabled, I would want my voice heard. But then I also knew that an insensitive portrayal of someone with disabilities was never our intention, so why change it?
When that call ended, no decision was made. And it was not my decision to make. I am just a freelance writer here, not a network executive. That decision was up to Hasbro and the Hub. I am sure they weighed what was best for the MLP brand, the show, the network, and they may have even weighed in my personal situation. Maybe they wanted to spare me from getting anymore more hate mail and people calling me offensive names. It may have been only 10 emails, but each one made me feel absolutely horrible If the effect on me was part of their motivation for the change, I think that's really amazing, incredibly sensitive, and very commendable.
In the end, Derpy's voice was re-voiced to be more ditzy. And while, again, I had nothing to do with the casting, this is closer to the voice that was in my head. And as for cutting her name, if it truly can be defined as "retarded," then I am personally glad that name is gone. I wouldn't want my writing to perpetuate children--our target audience--to call other children "derpy" with that meaning behind it.
So, I know the fans are upset. But please don't be upset at Hasbro or the Hub or DHX Media or the "Anti-Derpy" fans or me. Let's remember what the message of MLP:FiM is--tolerance, kindness, understanding, and, most importantly, friendship.
All my best,
Amy

ReplyDeleteI'm inclined to agree with this.
Derpy does not imply retardation. It simply is a word to describe something as dumb. The same way people say 'Duh!' when someone points out something that is obvious, stupid, or idiotic. If people draw a connection between someone who is a complete idiot and someone who is retarded, then that person needs to change their perspective on things.
That aside, the character is Derpy. Even if they change her name on the show, it will always be Derpy to the fans.
"Let's remember what the message of MLP:FiM is--tolerance, kindness, understanding, and, most importantly, friendship."
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, this message is lost when a character can be altered or removed simply because a few people found their name or behavior offensive: where is the tolerance and understanding in that? Especially when it stems from ignorance?
The origin of the word derp stems from a movie in which the two main characters are caught in an embarrassing act. However, when the meme caught on and went mainstream, it was focused on the wall-eyed appearance.
The irony here is that in attempting to "protect" the mentally challenged, these angry protesters actually managed to eliminate a character that many of those being "protected" might actually have been better able to relate to, one whose acceptance could have truly showcased what tolerance, kindness, understanding and friendship are really all about.
You dropped the ball here, Hasbro... but it's still in your court: pick it up, and run with it!
I'm highly sorry to say this, but I still feel offended that they changed her this way. I feel offended because when they changed her, they changed the speech impediment and the fact that she's just..herself. I find this offensive because I was just like Derpy! I had the stupid weird voice and the weird impediment because of something I can't control (my large tongue). With her lazy eye, it helped me knowing I had also someone similar to me. I may not have the lazy eye, but people make fun of me for my talking oddities and the fact I can not see well. I can sense her. I can understand her and her clumsiness since I'm also quiet clumsy and have those "derpy" moments. I can't imagine anyone who'd want me gone, censored. I-I don't mind myself...why change her and herself? Does that make her any different than anyone else?
ReplyDelete@DERPDERPDERPDERP
ReplyDeleteIf anything (and I agree with you) Derp means Clumsy...in my sense. What's the point of changing her name from clumsy to a worse name like Ditzy?
@TheSlorg Why were they changing her character just for ten.fucking.people?
ReplyDelete@Jusey1
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one who's going to challenge the people who named her Ditzy? Ditzy!! I found Ditzy Doo a WHOLE lot more offensive.
@DERPDERPDERPDERP
ReplyDeleteIndeed... It's amazing if they really wanna see Derp they should look at Patrick from SPongebob Sqaurepants he's been derp for oh I don't know... 9, maybe 10 years now?
Simply put, they don't want "derpy" to be the new word for "retarded". Yes, YOU might not call a handicapped person 'derpy', but some of the younger audiences watching the show might. They don't want their character fueling the Fire of Inappropriateness.
ReplyDelete:)
"Derpy" is in no way offensive, and if it took awhile to find a definition for "derpy" meaning "retarded" then it's not true, some idiot made it wrong. Derpy is being clumsy and akward. My friends and I are that way, but we aren't offended! Far from it! We see Derpy as another friend, a pony like us. And MLP is supposed to halfway be about everypony being accepted for who they are, but Derpy has to be removed? That may as well be the definition of stupid.
ReplyDeletei Know several retarded people none of them were offended it's only the parents of them that over think things, Just changing the name would work the original voice was perfect
ReplyDeleteLove and Tolerance?
ReplyDeleteThen Tolerate the name Derpy and LOVE HER
The sad thing is there will always someone making excuses as to why something was offensive. What I find offensive is that 10 out of 210 emails was enough to change a character completely because someone cried offensive. How is it tolerance to cave into the demands of the intolerant that think all "goofy" characters negatively portray the "mentally challenged. No where in MLP was it ever said Derpy Hooves was retarded or implied she was anything than a curtsey pony. Derp and Derpy are made up words. So just because someone went on Urban Dictionary and posted Derpy means retarded we are to take it as the word's true definition? What if someone posted on the internet that "Rainbow Dash" was a derogatory term for a lesbian? Will the character then be removed simply because overly sensitive jerks that are not internet savvy do a google search and sees someone use "Rainbow Dash" as a derogatory comment?
ReplyDeleteWhat if a Christian Fundamentalist Group complained that Rainbow Dash's rainbow hair represented the Gay Pride Flag and that the character was a ploy to "turn their daughters gay"? Will 10 emails from them cause the character to have her hair color changed?
What if people complained the character Iron Will was "too much of a bully" and "scared my child who is bullied at school"? Will that episode then become banned?
What if people complained that the episode "Lesson Zero" implied that Twilight Sparkles had OCD and her mental breakdown after not having a report to the princess ready made a negative portrayal of people with mental disorders. Will that episode be removed? Maybe remove the characters "overly organized" personality completely?
If the mentally challenged is to be treated like a normal person then why does every media portrayal of them have to be a positive one and anything not praising them is offensive? What about normal people? Do we get the same treatment? Shall every depiction of everyone be happy and cheerful and no conflict or strife or hardship ever be shown on TV so no one feels left out or "persecuted"?
If TV were like that then The MLP fans love today would not exist and all that would be shown is a regurgitation of the old G1-3 of MLP.
I have a better solution to the Derpy issue. Restore the episode with Derpy in it and keep the lines as they were. Then make an episode that focuses on Derpy and make her "ditzy" personality crystal clear that she is just an uncoordinated Goofball and not mentally retarded and should never be portrayed as such. This way you appease the fans and the critics. And if people still complain it is simply because they feel their lives are so meaningless that be getting a children's show changed is the only way to validate their lives.
Sincerely, Necromancer V
You know, I think everyone shouldn't take this oh-so seriously. Derpy's just a background character. Sure she's really funny, but I personally don't mind the voice change. This episode is made so Applejack can star in it, but everyone is just looking at Derpy. I think this decision was actually good in some way, making AJ get more attention SHE deserved and not a random background pony.
ReplyDeleteSo let's see if this is right.
ReplyDelete1). There were objections to the name "Derpy" on the grounds that it means "retarded."
2). So it was changed to "Ditzy."
3). Which ALSO means "retarded."
Sense not found. At all.
DERPY IS BEST PONY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteDERPY IS BEST PONY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI first saw the episode after the storm started. I found the original on youtube and then watched the new version for comparison. As a disabled person it did bother me just a little bit. But I decided like the new version as it sounds better. The old voice to me made her sound more stupid and yes the negative connotation of derpy. The new voice sounded less so and more to what I would have thought the character would sound like.
ReplyDeleteI don't follow the show that closely, but I do know of the fanon name Derpy Hooves and had no problem with Dash calling her Derpy in the show as I could see it was a nod to us fans more than being offensive. I thought it was pretty cool of them. But I also like the name Ditsy Doo a lot, because it brings to mind the thought of a bubble-headed type character that is meant to be endearing. Derpy was a name created by the fans before the episode where Dash mentioned her as "Ditsy" had come out, if I remember correctly.
It can be hard when a stereotype can perpetuate like that and often it is unintentional. Yes, people can become offended easily, but in the end, I am happy with the change despite not having been as offended as others. I still wouldn't have minded much if they didn't change it. My main issue was the low, slow tone of the voice, which came off as more 'mental issues' to me than simply an accident prone, flighty 'blonde' character. Still, like I previously said, while I like the new change better, I didn't dislike the old version, either. If I had seen it prior to the storm, I still might have been a little uncomfortable with the voice but it wasn't enough of an issue for me to raise anything.
Concluding, I'm glad that all of this died down rather quickly. I commend the companies for doing something to try and make peace, even if it did annoy a lot of fans. Ditsy/Derpy is still a character that I love.
The best thing to have done would have been, as Rainbow Dash put it "Sit there and do nothing."
ReplyDeleteDerpy is who she is. She shouldn't have to change for anyone.
That kind of goes against what this show is about, acceptance and friendship.
I love Derpy the way she is.
This whole debate still "rustles my jimmies" in a bad way.
The voice change, I don't really care about. But not calling her Derpy.... That was like a nail in the heart from HASBRO.
If you have seen the youtube series Dr.Whooves and the assistant, that voice will always be Derpy to me.
Derpy reminds me of myself in someways. I am kinda clumbsy and was misunderstood when I in school (I'm 26 now)
By changing her look, voice, and taking out her name, it was like people were saying, that it is not ok to be who you are. We don't like you this way, so you need to change.. And that hurts.
Oh and on a side note,
ReplyDeleteIf Dash's line would have been changed to call her Ditzy, MANY OF TABLES WOULD HAVE BEEN FLIPPED!
@Thrawn485Derpy now,Derpy forever.
ReplyDeletewhen i read this, i thought, people do not realize what they say, they need to realize what they type/say before posting/speaking it, derpy hooves is a wonderful character and i think she should stay her robustic, clumsy, amazing self. I am very social and love to get to know people and many of my friends have disabilities, but i do not see people for their flaws, only their shining perfections. Derpy Hooves is loved for the fact she represents the many self factors of many. see folks for their positive features, not negative, if you dont like something, choose your words carefully, it can affect many, many people, even when its intended for one. I have several disabilities, but nature made me that way, trying to kill an ego for something they cant control is morally wrong and you will be seen as a lesser person for it. dont do this unless you want to be seen as a terrible person, derpy must stay, she reminds me of all my caring friends, and my cat for some reason.
ReplyDeletewell,9/10 of those negative emails are trolls who do not like MLP (if not 10/10),and we all miss derpy, some people even made petitions for it D;.
ReplyDeleteA good way around this is if they create a running joke that to say her name is bad luck, then people can call her what they want; we already have plenty of brony designers and artists who are independent advocates for the Derpy name.

ReplyDeletei like derpy she was the best with her original voice and if someone with asbergers like me is not offeneded then why should anyone else be i mean derpy made me happy now i feel like hasbro is telling me im evil because i have a mental disiese which is wrong
ReplyDeleteIt'd be crazy for Hasbro to keep this up. Derpy's name shall forever be Derpy, not only to the fans but the people who make merchandise dealing with her. Plus, if Hasbro wants more money, Derpy is their real meal ticket, since EVERYONE loves her.
ReplyDeleteThis angers me for many reasons.
ReplyDelete1. Apparently, having a blonde named Ditzy and having her mess up everything isn't offensive, but naming her Derpy and giving her a deeper voice is. Not many people think Derpy is offensive, but you moved to please them.
2. This show is meant for young children, most have not heard the name 'Derpy' used to define people with disabilities. I don't think calling this pony Derpy with make kids think that it's right to call people with disabilities that.
3.Like my first issue pointed out, Ditzy is more offensive than Derpy. We've all heard blonde jokes where blonde women are portrayed as dumb, clumsy, and/or crazy. Some people use the name ditzy to describe blondes, so how is calling a blonde pony Ditzy not going to start problems?
End.
When the whole Derpy controversy originally came up, I was furious that the powers at Hasbro were buckling to those who were complaining. But as time as worn on, I've come to peace with the issue. What's important is that Hasbro keeps the character under any name and we all know who she is and what she means to us in our hearts.
ReplyDeleteNow, I wanna see more of her in season 3!
Ironic that Hasbro scrapped a slightly mentally-handicapped pony because it wasn't "normal," despite this being a show about ACCEPTING PEOPLE REGARDLESS OF WHO AND WHAT THEY ARE.
ReplyDeleteGo home Hasbro, you dropped the ball and the complete meaning of the show with that move.
I just want to say I understand where you're coming from, and I know you have no personal control over the choice, but it was the wrong one. Being disabled myself and having family members who are disabled as well, it offended us when she was changed. And, being made fun of most of my life, I was called Ditsy. Ditsy is even more offensive, meaning scatterbrained, flighty, and overall dumb and stupid. No one thinks automatically of retarded when the word derpy is used, but when ditsy is used people think of dumb. I don't want to start an argument, but that seems a tad more offensive.

ReplyDeleteI do not find it fair that just because some people misinterpret the meaning of "Derpy" means that there should have been a change. Derpy only means retarded if you meant it to, and most don't. I have never even thought of derpy meaning retarded, just like, "wow, that was derpy of me" (wow that was "clumsy" of me). I hope Hasbro does decide to change it back, because it was a change from a majority of fans, and then a few say they don't like it is not fair. Respectively, mental disabilities are no laughing matter, and should not be treated poorly. And from statements earlier, Derpy only mean retarded if you mean it that way, and Hasbro and them did not mean it in a critical way. I believe if someone had responded saying that they misunderstood, everything would have been fine.
ReplyDeleteHow is this offensive look at spongebob he is retarted and noone cares
ReplyDeleteI personally don't see how it makes anything any better. OK. So little future ass holes on the play ground MIGHT not start calling their disabled friends Derpy, and I understand how that's good. But I put emphasis on might. A LOT of kids are on the internet unsupervised these days, therefor most of them probably know the word already. But then again, I'm one of those people who uses the word "retard" in a way that has almost nothing to do with it's original meaning. If I laugh out "you're such a retard!" to one of my friends, it's because he was doing something goofy or silly, and that's what it means when we say it. And maybe that makes me insensitive, or mean, OR MAYBE EVEN... POLITICALLY INCORRECT! *le-gasp!* but so far I've met NO ONE IRL that takes offence to it. Not even my aunt and her children, one of which is autistic. In fact, they use the word the same way, which in my opinion, is actually a good thing. Making light of something like that, showing the child it's not that big of a deal. Freaking out about it is the same thing as surrounding a paraplegic with "OMG DON'T POINT IT OUT CAUSE YOU WANT TO MAKE THEM FEEL NORMAL CAUSE THEY DONT KNOW THEIR LEGS DONT WORK" which, instead of making them feel treated like a normal person, does quite the opposite and makes them feel weird.
ReplyDeleteAnyway. I feel as though I've gotten off topic.
Ditzy, given the fact that it's a real term, is technically FAR more offensive than a made up noise that sprouted from mindless internet chatter. ESPECIALLY on a blonde female character. For that matter, JUST the fact that you made a blonde character clueless is more offensive than the name Derpy! Or the fact that you made her wall eyed... AND made her cutie mark bubbles... BUT WHAT EVER!
I really don't care how you handled the episode. I have the original stashed, so it doesn't even matter.
I'm done here.
oh, also, I personally don't think hasbro gives a crap about the show or anyone's feelings about it as long as they sell toys. Have you even looked at the official toys? I went in a toys r us the other day and found a box set with a bunch of random ponies. Like seriously, it's like they took the molds for the mane 6, their cutie marks, and their colors, and said "fuck it, it doesn't matter what goes on who." I saw a fluttershy with RD's mane and a Rarity with Twilight's colors! I don't think they even watch their own show unless something like this comes up...
ReplyDeleteLast note, I love how they covered their asses when they made the vinyl figure of the character by leaving the space on the box where the name should be completely blank... Rainbow Dash's box says "RAINBOW DASH
ReplyDeleteVinyl Figurine"
Derpy's box says
"Vinyl Figurine"
yeah.
Derpy does not mean retarded.
ReplyDeleteArg. No one in their right minds would call autistic people or whomever derpy because of their condition.
Derpy in its true meaning is "something we've messed up on, but in reality, it could have gotten the chance to be correct, but we just messed up that one time."
So, nope. Not offensive.
The funny thing is, the people complaining don't know what it means.
This is a terrible reason, just because one Urban Dictionary example defined Derpy as retarded doesn't mean that's the definition. If she researched more she'd see how they have odd twisted definitions for many normal terms. Also "And while I was not personally offended by the scene, I tried to put myself in the shoes of someone that was." No. There's many people that hate MLP, let's put myself in their shoes. Well let's see if I hate something comletly I wouldn't want it to be popular. So to be respectful torwards the haters let's all stop watching My Little Pony. Perfect logic. Finally, changing offended more people that you could have ever by leaving it as Derpy. This is in no way a good decision.
ReplyDelete@Unknown
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately it seems they decided to once again make the worst choice possible, so no, Derpy still needs to be saved. She is a monthly item on the site Gaia Online and they were told specifically to use Ditzy.
http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/chatterbox/her-name-is-derpy-hooves/t.86707341_51/#51
Which has been an ACTUAL perjorative for far longer. So yes, we still need to fight this to the very end. Just one loss doesn't mean the end of the world especially for something that is so completely obviously a grave injustice. Keep fighting and we will one day re-instate that name! (There is a very good chance that after they stop making new episodes they will allow it, maybe even put back out on tv the unedited version as they will no longer be profiting from the title she appeared in.)
