Amy Keating Rogers Response to Derpy Hooves

Someone named Daniel from the Save Derpy Tumblr recently CC'd us in a conversation with Amy Keating Rogers.  I was a bit skeptical at first, but after contacting her from her website directly, it does appear to be legit.  I asked her if it would be alright to post her response to the Derpy Controversy here on EQD, and she was more than happy to help us finally dispel all of these nasty rumors going around.

After the break, you will find the entire email response.  It's a long one, so get your reading glasses on!

Whew, this controversy has been overwhelming and exhausting!

I actually had no idea that fans were really upset about the "Derpy Change" until your email. And I didn't actually know about the change until I got an email last week from a fan telling me about it!

Let me try and put some rumors at rest and calm the fans. And to do that, let's go back to the beginning.

When I first wrote this episode, the character under such harsh scrutiny was named Ditzy Doo. We had already established in previous episodes that she was clumsy (she is not the pony you want on your moving crew). And we named her Ditzy Doo thinking of her as a being a bit dingy.

The scene I wrote was originally longer and had a flashback explaining exactly what Ditzy Doo had done to damage Town Hall. She and Rainbow Dash were "Bucking Bolts" out of the clouds during a storm. Ditzy Doo was bucking too close to Ponyville central. Rainbow kept trying to yell over the noisy bucking for Ditzy to move away from town. But Ditzy could not hear her and thought that Rainbow was complimenting her for her great buck bolting. Ditzy then hit Town Hall with a bolt. And, thus, the damage.

For the second draft, I was asked to change Ditzy's name to Derpy as a "tip of the hat" to the fans. So, not knowing that Derpy meant anything beyond klutzy and clumsy, I did as requested And then I was finished with this episode.

I had nothing to do with the original voice casting. In my mind, she was ditzy, as her original name implied. But that's not anything I was ever involved with MLP. The scene was made shorter because the script was too long and because the story wasn't about Ditzy/Derpy. It was about Applejack.

When this episode first aired, I did not see it until after I started getting emails either thanking me or berating me for Derpy's portrayal. The angry emails really freaked me out because I knew that I had not written a scene that could possibly be interpreted as being insensitive to people with disabilities.

So, when I got home, I watched the episode. I saw that the scene was shorter, which did not surprise me. That happens all the time. I listened to her voice and it was deeper than I expected. However, I was not offended by any part of the scene in any way.

But I got about 10 emails saying how offended folks were. People labeled me an "ableist" (a word I'd never heard of) and said that I was being insensitive to the disabled by calling this character "derpy." I then did a search on what derpy meant and the first things that came up were "embarrassing" and "awkward" which is what I thought. But then when I did more in-depth searches, I discovered that one definition is "retarded."

Now, you have to realize that reading that made my heart sink. My son Soren (of Soarin' fame) is severely disabled. We do not use the word "retarded" in our house because it really has become an offensive slur. And while I knew that it was only a minority of people that defined "derpy" this way, it still upset me that I was the writer that put that name out there. It was painfully ironic and goes against the fact that I'm an advocate for the disabled.

I also want to note here that while I got 10 negative emails, I also got about 200 positive ones! I knew that the majority of fans were not offended. I got emails from fans with siblings with disabilities and parents of kids with disabilities and fans who had disabilities themselves and none of them were offended. At first, I tried to answer all these emails, but then I just became too overwhelmed. Still, I want to thank you all for your support!

But I was not the only one getting contacted regarding Derpy's portrayal. Positive and negative feedback was also being sent to Hasbro and the Hub. Someone at the Hub who knows about my personal connection with disabilities contacted me asking my opinion. We talked about various options of what to do.

1. Do nothing.
2. Cut Rainbow saying "Derpy" but keep Derpy's voice.
3. Cut Rainbow saying "Derpy" and change Derpy's voice.
4. Find a creative way to change Derpy's name in a future episode

And I was honestly torn about which action should be taken. I went back and forth and back again. It was a no win situation. Fans were going to be offended no matter what. And while I was not personally offended by the scene, I tried to put myself in the shoes of someone that was. I know that if I was offended by something that I thought was disparaging against the disabled, I would want my voice heard. But then I also knew that an insensitive portrayal of someone with disabilities was never our intention, so why change it?
When that call ended, no decision was made. And it was not my decision to make. I am just a freelance writer here, not a network executive. That decision was up to Hasbro and the Hub. I am sure they weighed what was best for the MLP brand, the show, the network, and they may have even weighed in my personal situation. Maybe they wanted to spare me from getting anymore more hate mail and people calling me offensive names. It may have been only 10 emails, but each one made me feel absolutely horrible If the effect on me was part of their motivation for the change, I think that's really amazing, incredibly sensitive, and very commendable.

In the end, Derpy's voice was re-voiced to be more ditzy. And while, again, I had nothing to do with the casting, this is closer to the voice that was in my head. And as for cutting her name, if it truly can be defined as "retarded," then I am personally glad that name is gone. I wouldn't want my writing to perpetuate children--our target audience--to call other children "derpy" with that meaning behind it.

So, I know the fans are upset. But please don't be upset at Hasbro or the Hub or DHX Media or the "Anti-Derpy" fans or me. Let's remember what the message of MLP:FiM is--tolerance, kindness, understanding, and, most importantly, friendship.

All my best,

Amy

This is my problem to. I have never seen anyone associate the term "derp" with "retarded".

Sadly I just wish they'd cut the scene at this rate, or at least bring back the original scene but with the new voice (Seriously, the scene lacks emotion now and feels like it a hack job).

I'm fine as long as she still has a name in general and she continues to show up. I actually liked the new voice, it's what I had in my head for her voice.

I understand why they changed it.
But TBH i would not have minded if they just changed here name to ditzy.

But kept the googly eyes and voice.
After all here name where Ditzy Doo in the first place.

We just gave here the nickname of derpy not in a offencive way.
But cause the googly eyes where a animation Goof up or a animation "derp".

Hence the name derpy it never where intended to be offencive but then again.
Most of the ones not watching the show as often or are aware of its fan base will prob not understand what derpy means to us.

Like for example the parents of a child who might have some sort of disability will most likely find the name derpy offencive.

So hasbro did not have much of a choice they had to change it to not get sued for "Making fun of people with disabilities"

This is time for use bronies to shine and show that we can love and tolerate them for making this decision.

We might not agree with them but there is no reason to spread rage and hate.

We just have to deal with it besides the DVD copy will remain unchanged.

And im sorry for the possible grammar mistakes and other spelling errors im from sweden and im dyslectic

BREAKING NEWS! The name "John" is an offensive word to people with disabilities, everyone with the name "John" has to change their name.

I can apply new definitions to words also, you know?

So is there a good reason someone from Hasbro couldn't have made this an official statement five god damn days ago? Thank you Amy for finally being the one to respond to the fans so thoughtfully.

On another note, I don't understand how people can still be raging over all this after this response

You know what, I was going to write this whole thing but forget it.

I'm through. This statement should be the closure of this whole Derpy thing.

I urge all the SaveDerpy people to just drop this and move on. This statement is about as official a response we're going to get.

If you want to stay angry stay angry, I'm not advocating "love and tolerate". But this is getting way overblown and overshadowing the show itself.

Let's move on seriously. If there are more article about this controversy I will politely decline to read it and the comments from now on.

@DeRockProject

Oh you haven't how about this: "derp" doesn't mean anything

Its a modern equivalent to *Annoyed Grunt* of Simpsons frame. All it expresses is a notion of something got screwed up.

It has absolutely no more connection to the disabled then any of the following: klutz, clumsy, idiot, butterfingers, ditz, dumbass, screw up, or any number of words.

Now then certainly many of these might be used to berate the disabled with, but so is the fucking proper terminology too.

Its reaction exactly by narrowminded do-gooders like yourself that are the reason if you aren't a doctor the words "mental retardation" shouldn't be heard, and not happy with that you are now getting to be you aren't happy with disable anymore.

Stop trying to fucking sugar coat peoples medical problems and force everyone else to tow your tyrannical line. I understand there are people with issue, congrats. Unless you are asking for something got damned relevant like seeking funding for a dedicated hospital for them... stop trying to ruin everyones fun with your drowning flood of sympathy by even bringing it up. The notion that every concievable offense that even one person can find must automatically have its throat slit and be thrown in the gutter is a cancer that is devouring culture.

It only results in bland, worthless, trash that nobody can enjoy.

Funny thing, I was thinking about this last night. I thought "Since Hasbro is behind the scene change, why would they do that?" Then it dawned on me, they want to quell both sides of the aisle (bronies and non-brony fans), however, they were in a lose-lose situation; change Derpy, upset us, don't change Derpy, upset the non-brony fans, who may or may not be just as numerous as us.

Either way, I felt nothing but sympathy for Hasbro. There is no compromise on this situation and they had to make a decision. They probably made the best one in their interests, as they should have.

I know someone is going to say "they're just trying to get as much money as possible!" Let me be the first to say, "shouldn't they?" I know this probably angers our side more then the non-brony side, but from Hasbro's perspective, side with one and loose all the other side's money. They needed to find a way so that, as hard as it is, all sides can at least remain partially sympathetic with Hasbro.

Now reading this message, as the new saying goes, it sucks to be right.

The one thing I will say, it sucks it had to come to this. It sucks Derpy wasn't seen as a nod to us bronies. It sucks even worse knowing there are enough people who were so offended by her, it came to an ugly flame war. I think it's the worst though that Amy and Hasbro had to go through what they did. For that, I applaud them both.

To me personally, the original scene will always be the only true version to me.

tl;dr version:
Sucks, but Amy and Hasbro did the best thing.

snowfi6916 said...

A lot of what she said makes sense. Nice to know that she herself wasn't personally offended by Derpy's original portrayal.

I just feel really bad that she had to be called on the carpet for making fun of the mentally challenged when her son Soren is disabled himself. I can't imagine what was going through her mind...

Amy, if you end up reading this, I am truly sorry that you had to go through this, along with everyone else who works on the show. We are still upset by the change, but if the show continues to be high quality like it has been, then we will get better eventually. It will just take a while.

Daffodil said...

So what the goddamn fuck happened here? Is Hasbro really this incredibly stupid? Methinks some people over there are too dumb to live.

I'm amazed. Just... I'm not even upset anymore. The sheer dumbfuckery has reached critical mass, and the hypocrisy is cranked up to eleven.

Dusty the Royal Janitor said...

*sighs* Alright. At least we've FINALLY gotten an explanation. That's all I really wanted.

I dunno, though. From my point of view, the change sorta carries the implication that clumsy/embarrassing/retarded people are 'not to be seen.' Having a mentally slowed sister myself, the removal of Derpy is MORE offensive to me than having her in there, but... we have an explanation, so okay. I guess that's the end of that...

Kayube said...

So... Now that we're done with the past, we should think about Derpy's future. There are a few possiblities for her future role:

1. Cut her out entirely; I don't think anyone wants this.

2. Continue her in the role she had in Season 2 prior to The Last Roundup; a recurring gag character you can spot in the background. This seems to be what most people assume is going to happen.

3. Respond to the controversy by giving her another important scene which makes her seem less like a stereotype. There are two ways I can think of to do this:

a. Make it clear that she's not mentally disabled, she just has goofy eyes and is clumsy. This seems to be more of a compromise, but it would probably not cut it for the pro-Derpy people who actually want her to be a positive symbol for the mentally disabled (no matter how she was actually portrayed before). Which leads me into...

b. Have her actually be disabled, but use this fact to teach a lesson. They'd really have to finesse this one to get it to work, and they probably won't try, but kids' shows have dealt with heavy subjects like this in the past (Sesame Street's famous episode about Mr. Hooper's death for example), and the writers definitely have the proper amount of respect for their audience to have a good chance of pulling it off. Still, if it went too far one way it'd just be even more flagrantly stereotypical, if it went too far the other way it would be too sappy, and it would probably ruin the ability to use Derpy for the kinds of gags she's been used in up to this point.

Tenaris said...

@Daffodil sadly this thing will take a long time since a lot of people all over the community have been raging about this before they got an answer and its highly unlikely it will happen anytime soon.

Mcoov said...

Ahh, finally some real words of weight.

The issue I see here is that "Derp" is not a real word as defined by reputable literature groups (i.e. the Dictionary writers), and thus is subject to constant change. I've never heard "Derp" used as an epithet for the mentally handicapped before, but apparently someone else has, and thus its use as such is "out there" without being officially incorrect.

So the only real way to solve this issue the way the Bronies want it to be solved is to get one (or more) of the Dictionaries to be published with Derp as a bona fide word with an indisputable definition that does NOT include any mention of mental handicaps. Realistically, this is a pipe dream, and I applaud the decision that was reached in light of the situation.

So I want to extend my thanks to: Amy for taking the time talk in such exquisite detail, the person who wrote Amy originally, and the DHX writers and Hasbro for thinking of us, as that was their original motivation for using "Derpy".

Lastly: remember guys, just because she's "un-named", doesn't mean she's not still "Derpy Hooves". She's been my favorite character since my introduction to the show, and she will always be Derpy Hooves.

And to Derpy: Here's lookin' as best I can at you kid.

I like to think of the bronies and the MLP team (Hasbro, VAs, Studio B, etc.) as a pair of inseparable school buddies. We pass notes in class, laugh at each others' jokes, and overall enjoy one another being around.

Of course, there's always that one time we get detention from the teacher because we take things a little too far during class. In little ways, a string of inconveniences from all of us sorta lead to Derpy getting censored, soI guess both the bronies and MLP team helped in screwing this up, huh?

FireKatKid said...

While I don't -truly- blame then for trying to not be offensive, nor do I wish to start anything else, there's a few issues.

1) If she had to -dig- to see "derpy" as "retarded", then it obviously isn't the most used variation of the word. Just how "gay" is no longer "happy". And "cool" is very rarely "low temperature".
2) I highly doubt kids are going to call clumsy kids Derpy. I doubt they call the athletes Rainbow Dash or the smarty pants Twilight. If anything, heck, I'd love being nicknamed after a character on one of my fav shows.

Anyways, it's really all said and done. While I'm saddened to see anyone get offended by an innocent word being turned into a dirty word (RECESS is a great example of this going horribly out of control), at least we got her named just for us to begin with. We can always go with the name I always figured she could have, back when Lauren wanted it to be Ditzy and the fans wanted it to be Derpy, of Ditzy "Derpy" Doo. No one's wrong, we can use the name we like most. You'll always be Derpy to me, little pegasus. No more offensive in true definition than Applejack being of the same name as alcohol.

PS
Heck yeah, at least we now know the back story to the town hall scenario!

TwistedBlack25 said...

@Ariathina

I agree! I kinda wish whoever made the modification thought things through. I am sure the VAs of the show were still doing VA for the next season coming up at the time. DHX should have at least pulled Ashleigh and another VA with a good voice for Ditzy Doo back to re-record the scene so that way Ditzy wouldn't sound like a voice from the AT & T text to speech application, and the scene would flow like the mod didn't happen at all. Sure the name "Derpy" would be gone, and the Derpy voice would be changed but if I was in charge of Studio B, that's what I would have done.

Fuck you, 10 people who emailed her with your pathetic bitching and ruining it for everybody.

Side thought: they can still make Derpy speak in the future, but with her "acceptable" voice, and have her name NEVER mentioned. Instead, turn it into a RUNNING GAG:

Whenever it comes to somepony asking something like "what's your name anyway", she's cut off or interrupted a different way each time she or anyone else tries to mention her name.

It would work in the way that it would be funny, a homage to classic Screwball comedy, safe from bitching shitheads, and would be self parodizing of the whole "censorship" situation.

Just a thought; someone should email Rogers back the idea and see what she thinks...

It's weird how the first time I have ever heard the word 'derpy' used to call someone retarded is when people are calling someone retarded because they're named 'Derpy'.
It's much less of a stretch to assume Snails' name is making fun of 'slow' people, so why don't we censor him, too, while we're at it?

One rotten apple spoils the bunch. God dammit, people should learn to take a joke, and learn the saying, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth", or in this case, gift pony. The creators made her Derpy for US, and people had to see a problem with it. I wonder how many people that were offended were actually disabled? Probably none. They probably just wanted to feel like they had authority, so they went and cried to get the scene removed, as does a child begging it's parents for candy. I'm done now... that's better.

Saying ditzy is offensive is just as nonthinkingly stupid as saying derpy is. And its the same argument that your enemies have been using!

It's comforting to see so many people finally coming to a common agreement. The way this was handled probably wasn't thought over too carefully but what's done is done. And it's great that Ms. Rogers put out this message and gave us the insight into the whole situation that I'd say we all so desperately wanted. It really is a shame that it all boiled down to the situation we've been in for the past month. But now we have this to work with and hopefully we can move forward. Like Ms. Rogers said herself "...please don't be upset at Hasbro or the Hub or DHX Media or the "Anti-Derpy" fans or me. Let's remember what the message of MLP:FiM is--tolerance, kindness, understanding, and, most importantly, friendship."

That being said, anyone wanna take bets on what Derpy's gonna be up to on Saturday? I vote she's gonna be on a promotional poster somewhere in Ponyville. I mean, she's already shown up in a snowglobe for crying out loud.

Jersey Lightning said...

I guess the change was inevitable at that point, but I still believe "Derp" is in no way a slur towards mental disabilities. I use it when I accidentally screw something up, and so do all of my friends. Derpy was a cute name :(

i want to point out that although she said that it does not make it canon.
canon wise the grey pegasus with the blond mane was not named until last roundup
rainbow did mention somepony named "ditzy" in winter wrap up. yet derpy did not show up.
before you go off on "but she just said" i will stop you right there with Faust's drawing labeled "derpy".
and if things were set up as it was planned then we would not have rainbow dash and pinkie pie but instead firefly and suprise.

I'm with the writer on this. There is no win-win and I guess Hasbro/the Hub did what they did to protect themselves, which is what companies do to survive.
I support them in their discision, even though they took awake cute awkward pony.

On with her name, if the Writer wrote her in as Ditzy Doo, the directors and voice actors should've kept it that way. For the most part Brony society accepts both names, and while Derpy is her internet culture name, Ditzy Doo is are rediculously adorable name, and suits her, while staying 'politically correct'.

All in all I'm hoping Derpy/Ditzy will make more appearances, maybe get some speech time.

My only question remains; Will we ever see the cross eyed pony again? She was the "Where's Waldo" of this series, always fun trying to find "Derpy/Ditzy Do" Named or unnamed she always was a little bonus of many episodes. Just her being in episodes at all was a reference to the fans.

Feel bad for Amy for the crap she went through, but even with this message. I still can't change my disappointment with HASBRO.

I really liked Derpy's name and voice. If they had only ignored the whiners, this wouldn't have turned into such a major issue. Now it feels like if they make anymore shout outs to the bronies, the whiners will be the ones who have the bigger voice for HASBRO.

I'll always love and watch this show, and I'll eventually get over it. But for now, this situation really irks me. . .

Heres what fans can and probably should do: -Stop complaining. Move on!
-Name her whatever you want! "Its your personal choice as she has 2 names. Derpy and Ditzy or ditzy D Hooves or Derpy D hooves, etc"
-If the Last Roundup is live-streamed replace it w/ the DVD version. The original!
-Tolerate this decision. (Unless they underp her background eyes in her next shout-out) Then go all out. Please.
-Refrain from debating the meaning of her fanon name as retarded. (Its an awesome name imo!)
-Stop targeting people. Your only making relations with important figures (Hasbro/Hub) rocky.
-Stop questioning or seeking an answer for the eyes. The people who had to do it probably got the wrong idea or something. Or we may never know.

-But most importantly in my opinion love derpy, keep making her awesome for us and anyone at the studio watching our works. And remember to love and tolerate this....for now

.......oh and wait for the next episode! yay!:D

I think a number of people here have been raising some good points. Derpy is nothing to get upset over. On the other hand, I can create a laundry list of other things that have shown up in this program that ought to be infinitely more incensing, not the least of which is the acknowledgement of a gay relationship between Lyra and Bon Bon, turned to canon in "Secret of My Excess." Mind you, I think it is a fine union and I have no problem with it. But this further demonstrates that Hasbro doesn't know jack when it comes to offensive material, and instead seems intent on tearing their fandom down the middle. Mission accomplished. Of course there's a winning solution:

10 negative:200 positive.

Ignore the 10 and move along, trying to please everyone pleases no one.

Clearly we need someone to start a minor campaign to have AJ removed from the show. Why, oh well Applejack is a type of hard liquor. Fluttershy is meek and reinforces sexist oppression of women. Oh and Zecora is a racist caricature. And of course Rainbow Dash is a walking lesbian stereotype.

Lauren Faust went out and fought that last one because it wasn't true. Obviously Hasbro has no use for truth though. I think the difference is clear.

Rukario said...

If someone calls someone a retard, they should just deal with it and ignore it. It is just a word. Those soccer moms need to stop trying to ban everything they don't like...it is rather annoying. Hasbro had the power to ignore them...

L9OBL said...

In all reality it's not the name cut or the voice change that pissed me off. It was them straightening her eyes out. I can understand removing her name as yes some people believe it do be an offensive slang for mentally handicapped and her original voice did make her sound quite slow (a derp on Tabitha Saint Germaine's part believing derpy to be male (which in all reality would probably fit a male Derpy quite well))and was the polar opposite to what me and my friends imagined. But when they changed her eyes I felt like they had removed her "essence" so to speak. I was pissed, did I vent on ponysquare? Yes. Did I sign Save Derpy Petitions? Yes! Did I write angry hateful emails to Hasbro and crew? Hell no. Cause I realize that, that would accomplish nothing more than to increase what negative Reputation we have. It was Unnecessary and against everything being a brony stood for. How is "how dare you do that to derpy?" Love and tolerance? Also the unmodified version is still easy to access as I have it on my computer and it's still on youtube, so I can just watch the original instead of the modified version. And I must say when I heard about all the hate mail Hasbro and crew were getting It was the first time I was ever truly ashamed to be called a brony. But as my construction teacher always says: "It's not that you made a mistake that matters, but how you fix it." So I'm interested in what the community will do to "repent" for our lack in judgement. I know I for one will spend Derpy day writing kind letters to as many of the Hasbro crew that I can, even if I didn't send them hate mail.

I have (and have had since the controversy began) mixed feelings on the issue. As an adult with a neurological disability who caught more than my fair share of flak for it growing up, I have never been offended by Derpy's name, eyes, or personality/voice. I refer to myself as derpy all the time when I knock over graduated cylinders in the fume hood, drop my pen where I can't reach it, and walk into the lab bench (I just don't know what went wrong!) I also have a voice lower than one would expect for a woman, I get mistaken for a guy on the phone all the time - again, doesn't bother me.

Having said that, I remember the little girl I once was and how many names I was called. While I personally don't have a problem with the term derpy, if there's any possibility that it's going to result in some child's life being made the living hell mine was, I don't want to see it in a show that's supposed to be the polar opposite of that. I am actually more upset by their 'fixing' her eyes - I am familiar with the term 'ableist'. I've used it on occasion. But Derpy Hooves/Ditzy Doo is not ableist. Ableism is when you park in the priority parking spot without a tag because 'I'm only going to be 5 minutes!'. It's when you leave your cart blocking the curb cut because going the extra twenty feet to put it in the rack is 'totally not your problem.' It's when you give the 25 year old with agonizing joint pain and balance problems the evil eye for parking in the priority space (with permit) because 'you're too young, and you don't look disabled!' It's when someone tells you they can't do something because they have Condition X and you reply that you know someone with Condition Y, which is totally just like Condition X, and they can do it just fine, so of course you can, either you're faking it or you're just not trying hard enough. That is ableist bullshit. Derpy Hooves is not. And the only way that we are ever going to get rid of the ableist bullshit is by showing kids, early and often, that people with disabilities, visible or not, are - le gasp! - regular people just like everyone else and deserve acceptance as such. The worst thing you can possibly do as far as propogating ableist bullshit is hide every semblance of a possibility of disability in children's media. The way to end ableist bullshit is to put disabled characters in the media, not as tokens or pity-parties, but as normal people doing their normal people thing, and characters around them not seeing them, their abilities, their disabilites, assistive devices, or tasks that other characters can do alone but they need help with as any big thing. That is how you end ableist bullshit.

A totally reasonable answer. That's always been sort of my thing too: I never found Derpy offensive in the least, but if I tried to put myself in the shoes of someone who did find it offensive, I could never totally write off their viewpoint.

At the very least, I'm sure everyone even tangentially involved in the show has received 200+ emails about this at this point, so let's at least stop bothering these poor people.

Christian said...

I find it funny that so many people are "ok" with Ditzy being her potential name. I get if you feel success over validility of your headcanon regarding this character, but this article says that the name Ditzy was changed to Derpy because of us fans. Just going and saying Ditzy would've been as good, is like an insult to those who put Derpy there instead, like, can you even imagine what kind of shit they've been through just because of this name change the last month? It's like pretending this whole thing didn't mean diddily squat for us in the end, and they just put this nod to us for naught. The least we can do is support them for their choice and thank them for considering us.

Of course, we also need to take into consideration AKR's concerns around the name and it's potential link to her son and her own beliefs about protecting the disasbled. It was her decision after all to actually name the pony Derpy, and I can only start to imagine how horrible she must've felt when people started accusing her of albeism because of this. I know that at least one of you is reading right now, and I can only say, "fuck you, think before you act". Derpy is indeed not a slur for retardism, unless you want to belive in Urban Dictionary, a place anyone can edit in any way they like. My only wish now is that Derpy remains unnamed within the show, it will not be for any good next time.

I am however fully understanding of this situation now, and I give my full support to AKR in this matter.

Anton said...

Whatever, I don't blame the writers. But this whole ordeal has really left a bad taste for the show. Not so much because of Derpy, but because I really hate censorship of art and catering to vocal minorities. Maybe I held the show to too high a standard, forgetting it was commissioned by a company that wanted to sell toys to little girls.
But it's kind of like... Disillusionment.
I suppose the zebra and the lesbian is next on the cutting block.

At this moment I'm more excited about the upcoming Friendship is Witchcraft than the next real episode.

now i dont know what is worse.. the fact that those few people rallied then. or the fact that they complained about ableisim on a pony who even though she may be retarded is still the best pony we care about.
perhaps because they did not like the "derpy" line. or maybe because they dont like a "retarded" person to be well liked.
so in reguards to this letter
A: do your homework
B: make a decision and stick with it.
C: know your fans

Let me be honest: I didn't like the original voice. I like the new one much more. Her old voice was off-putting and made me think she had a terrible cold. But hey, it was Derpy speaking. So I was happy.

Now the voice is changed and people are acting like Derpy's had a bus dropped on her.
So let me make this clear: If ANYBODY is getting a bus dropped on them, it will be YOU*, and DERPY will be the one dropping it!

They were stuck between a rock and a hard place. No matter what they did someone would be mad.

Besides, lets look that the pros here.
1. Hasbro thinks highly enough of us that they requested that the writer use our name for Derpy.
2. Their discussions about how to deal with the situation included trying to find a way to minimize how upset they would make us.

I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with Hasbro. I love the things they make, but sometimes I hate how they manage it (Where's my Transformers Animated Season 3 DVD? I know you're reading this Hasbro.). That said, I can't really fault them this time. I'm glad to get more info but that isn't going to change how I fell about this whole thing.

I'm not going to buy one thing from Hasbro as long as they are keeping this edit. I emailed Hasbro in more detail but saying the same thing.

If that pisses anyone off, they can eat me.

I myself have always seen derpy as meaning eyes pointing in different directions, clumsy, less intelegent than others maybe. But never ever retarded I always loved anything that was had derped eyes. I also only found one article anywhere that said derpy meant retarded which had the most thumbs down for my urban dictionary search.

Of course no one will come to Snails defense, he's ugly and male. Looking at other cartoons, that seems to be the acceptable type to make "retarded" without anyone complaining.

Anyone else wonder why people were offended at "Derpy", but not the "get back to the hospital" joke from "Read it and weep"?

rowen211 said...

I know the hater's attack was brutal and calling Amy bad names is wrong in so many ways, but what the haters fail to realize is that "derp" isn't even a real word so there is no official defenition. As with most made up words, a meaning is decided based on a majority and the majority says that "derp" means to mess up or akward.

Gagnorbly said...

This entire issue is ridiculous. "Derpy" NEVER NEVER NEVER meant "retarded". The definition of my name on Urban Dictionary is "A man with a small penis", but that doesn't change the meaning of the word Morgan. I don't care how insensitive this sounds, but I honestly feel that if her son wasn't disabled, she wouldn't have opted for the change. She'll always be Derpy Hooves to me. That's the name her parents gave her, that's the name the fans gave her, and the legend of Derpy will never die.

Scoot said...

Even though the email confirmed many of my assumptions, a number of facts still stands:

1) Derpy has been changed because of a small number of complaining douchebags.
2) Writer/whoever in charge in Hub/Hasbro have no idea what derpy means for fans, nor do they care. What higher management cares for is getting their asses covered to avoid any possible publicity.
3) Too many people misslabel "love and tolerance" for acceptance. Don't fuck us over and we will love and tolerate you. Be a dick to us (I'm looking the complaining douchebags) and we will call you bitching moralfag you are.

Not a big surprise after all.

Zachary said...

@Derpestia
You're difference of opinion is meant to inflame and anger. Not only that, but you're proposing that Hasbro do the exact thing they did to Derpy to Zecora, who is actually a planned character. I'm fine with different opinion, but not an ignorant one.

BlueNight said...

@Geldon Yetichsky, the way I read it, it was ten people who were genuinely upset, who didn't know she has a special-needs child, who thought it was done in a mean-spirited way. (I myself winced the very first time I heard her original voice, but I got used to it, and defended it.)

As for Ditzy Doo being the stereotypical ditzy blonde... I don't care.

The Lotus Tea Dragon said...

VikingRS said...

Thank you Mrs. Rogers. If only something like this could have come up before the change, I feel that much of the enmity could have been avoided.

I also still dislike the idea of censoring a character like Derpy/Ditzy on a show about acceptance of differences.

But, alas, at this point I only hope two things.

1) Derpy/Ditzy remains in the show.

2) Someday she gets another chance to speak, with a proper voice and voice actor. (I don't mind the voice change as it is, but it could have been done WAY better. No offense.)

I just hope she doesn't get axed because of the possible "dumb blonde" activists. (Screw them, I'm blond and I'm fine with her!)

So I guess I vote for Ditzy "Derpy Hooves" Doo.

Nice to see a fellow Mountaineer around.

As for your statement I might have to disagree. While normal would think what the hell's the problem because black people call themselves nigga all the time like most of my black friends do, but sadly if you tried to say it the same way they do they'd have your ass. Same goes for the word Derp and Retard, it's how it's interpreted and sadly we live in the Age of Offense where thin skinned people rule.

Though going back to the one above comment about getting the definition changed the only way you'd be able to do that is submit it to Webster's with what the definition should be, and I'm not sure how well that would work but I suppose it's worth a try if you think you can pull it off.

Our favorite, wall eyed and clomsy, pony's name is Ditzy Doo, it always was, Derpy is just a nick name. Her voice is sweet and effeminate, if not a little goofy.

This is always how I felt it should be and is what is finally and officially cannon. The debate is over, move on, please, for everyone's sake. That includes our poor Derpy's fate, please... Just move on...

The utter lack of actual principles and anything associated with reality?

Clearly the barking mad pony is a complete sterotype of those with psychological disorders as "funny" and not the poor sick souls they are. Worse it simplifies the spectrum of mental disorders into the misleading label of "crazies" that must be placed in institutions.

(Or was just a sight gag that should be loved and tolerated like anything else)

Nothing we can do. Gonna move on after this probably. But im gonna clarify the word Derp and such.

It has NO meaning as it isn't an OFFICIAL word. South Park invented it to make fun of Rob Shneider as being abit of an idiot. Since it isnt in the OFFICIAL dictionary its meaning can vary.
Im sure this will lead to more complaining but that would happen either way.

Unknown said...

Naming her "Derpy" wasn't intended to offend disabled people. People usually use that word when they do something stupid. Like knocking something over or doing something wrong, they would say "DerpDerpDerp". It's supposed to be funny, not offensive. We didn't have the thought of picking on disabled people when we gave her that name.

Amy read all the good meanings, but that last one really disturbed her. How can 1 little word piss someone off SO badly that they don't like the name Derpy.

In the internet world, where we use words in different context, which adults (Not in our era) do not like.

It was really awesome for Hasbro and the Hub to give Derpy a name and voice, but to have it change just because people thought it was offensive, is just terrible.

Amy herself said that she only got 10 negative e-mails! All the rest were positive! How can 10 outweigh 200? That doesn't make sense.

I suppose I can understand the MLP staff's dilemma regarding this "controversy". However, the fact that a tiny group of misinformed, overprotective parents blew out of proportion what was supposed to be a simple tip of the hat to the fans continues to not sit well with me. Love and tolerate, but don't take it lying down.

Scoot said...

Also, for all those wondering why Snails or Screw Loose (barking pony) didn't offend anyone is because noone cares for them. Fandom won't give two shits if their lines/voices will change.

On the other hand, bitching about Derpy makes a lot of people upset, and censoring her will piss of a huge amount of people. What is more satisfying to a bitchy asshole than that?

"Being offended" is just an excuse to impose your views on somebody against his/her will. And for more often that not it is used in that context. Those who can relate (poor writer with a disabled son) are more vulnerable to this kind of pressure, which brings it to the whole new level of douchebaggery.

@Extrazero8 As a goblin, I am not actually opposed to cannibalism. Besides which, as a goblin, I am of a different species. So I still don't define the eating of a HUMAN as 'cannibalism'.
In other words: Sleep with one eye open.

Boycotting Hasbro over a change they won't reverse will do nothing but convince Hasbro that the character as a whole was a mistake. Or that the SHOW as a whole was. It's pointless. Why can't people just be satisfied that we're getting acknowledged like this? Derpy wouldn't EXIST past a single scene if not for we bronies!

mkb said...

The voice actor derping on Derpy's gender is, well, appropriate given why the character exists in the first place.

If it was up to me I'd say change the voice but for the love of Time, keep the name!

Thunderpony said...

This doesn't make me feel better at all actually. This somewhat pisses me off MORE than what i already was.

First off: Derpy. Yes one of the "Lesser" meanings is "retarded" i guess...but you know what? It's not the lesser meaning of a word that defines it. The word queer for example, a lesser meaning is "Strange" or "Weird" but our current definition of it is one of a slur. Or how about fag? The lesser meaning being totally innocent of all insults, a word that has the lesser meaning of cigarette. Still again, used as a slur, a word will carry the most weight with what the masses carry, all other lesser meanings will become mostly void. I could go on but lets move to point 2.

Secondly: Although i feel bad for this person for coming under attack, it does not make me feel better knowing that these people personally berated her without even knowing the full story. I can tolerate these people, i understand these people, i am kind to these people etc. But NONE of that means i can't get pissed off at their actions, it just means i put up with it.

Thirdly: How is Ditzy not offensive? Ditzy has literally been used to describe a stupid person or a person that does stupid things...WHUT?! This is perfectly fine but Derpy is a No-No?! *Flails around angrily*

Fourthly, i will kinda be upset with hasbro or hub...or whoever changes these things simply because by changing this they agreed that it was offensive and that it was "An insult to the disabled". It is no different than blue popo from the 4kids dub of DBZ. They made him blue because they thought he's an insult to black people, he has big lips and etc. I know popo isn't even human, so by them changing his color it leads me to believe they on some level of their mind, thought this is what a black person is like. THAT offended me.

All in all, the situation hasn't changed for me. I'm still mad, more so than before, and now i have more knowledge about these things...which doesn't help a bit.

Again, i feel sorry for this lady and i hope she recovers from this, but the anti-derpy fans...just.... UGH!

Rakshata said...

*sigh* I hate politics... Anything good, they destroy.
It is pointless being politically correct. No matter what, you will always offend someone. Even if you just show an image of a stick figure standing quietly in the middle of a blank room, they will say it is making fun of people in mental institutions.
Hell, "Smile Smile S0mile," which epitomizes My little pony, could be taken as an insult to people in one of the countries currently in the middle of a genocide. "You may not live to see tomorrow, if you don't know where your parents are they are likely dead, but you should smile anyway!"
... Of course I'm exaggerating, but you cannot please everyone.

Here is what Hasbro SHOULD have done:
1. Edited Derpy's voice. Sure I liked the original, but I am a fan of balddumbrat's interpretation, which falls under a more "ditzy" category. Though I do know some guys who talk as slow as a tree, and were actually cast to play an elephant in a stage show I ran the lights for, but no offence was made. (after all, 'twas Horton.)
2. Edited Dash's dialogue to be more friendly, but NOT remove the name. When I heard the reasoning for changing dash's dialogue as well, it made sense to me. Yes it too has connotations, like that you should talk down to mentally retarded people, but it would more likely just be seen as being nice.
3. They should not have underped the eyes. THAT, is the biggest insult. You can change her voice, you can ruin the comedy by making her more sympathetic by making Dash more sympathetic towards her, but underping the eyes... you might as well have put Feathermay in there.

I thanks Ms.Rogers for her response, but It only served to reignite my dislike for politics because one of the options was to just change her voice, effectively removing anything to make her seem "retarded."

Ah thank you for finally saying something like that now this is basically what im gonna say and it's part of the point i was trying to make with the trolling who get's to really say what's ignorant or not? who says one opinion is lesser than another?

The end result of the course of action that most of this fandom has taken of holding certain ideals so highly and promoting tolerance only when it benefits there opinion is something that will just continue to lead to more flame wars down the road and hate.

kryxel said...

@Knight Stalker
i want to point out that "derpy" is the name of "ditzy" on the FIRST drawing faust made of her. and "Derpy" was the first (and only) naming of this mare in the show.
i agree with having derpy as a nickname but "canon" it is not.

darkconsoles said...

i can understand a hasbro concern about "derpy" word, because personally if i would be in school and i had a disability of some kind and i would not know of mlp i would be seriously offended by other kids naming me derpy

its reasonable that that needed to be changed, hasbro just cut it out the hard way, thats all

I saw this today and I think it's pretty relevant. Also, if they wanted to remove the name "Derpy" that's fine but why didn't they just change it to "Ditzy" then?

Also, aren't MORE people offended now than there were before? The anti-derpy people stopped after a while but the pro-derpy people are probably going to keep pushing this.

Another thing, how is including a mentally retarded person in the cast a bad thing? Even if Derpy was retarded, it's not "offensive" to include her in the show. Freaking Ed (Ed Edd n Eddy), Cheese (Foster's), Pinkie(Pinky and the Brain, Billy (Billy and Mandy), Wacko (Animaniacs), and several other characters could be "interpreted" as retarded but the people who were offended by them weren't paid any attention because the companies knew they weren't. They merely wanted a goofy character for kids to laugh at. (You could make the argument that they were all male but then you make this issue even MORE offensive by saying females can't be shown badly on TV.)

Overall, I understand their initial fear of the name but their catering to the minority and trying too hard not to "offend" has only made things worse.

I really appreciate the time it took for her to write to us and provide everyone with a good explanation about the change. It must have been quite difficult for them to make the change, but I look again at the statistics.

She said she got 10 e-mails from ponies who were offended by Derpy being Derpy; however Amy received over 200 e-mails from fans LOVING Derpy being named Derpy including people who are/have children who are/knowing others who are mentally disabled.

Derpy's name was still removed from the episode.

It reminds me of the reason why Girl Guides in Canada are not officially allowed to have campfires: because ONE filly was dumb and fell in the fire and her parents sued, NOPONY gets fires anymore.

This is just another sign of the minority of offended ponies ruling over the majority of unaffended, which then offends the majority for being snubbed by the elitist minority. THE WORLD IS OFFENSIVE, LEARN THIS LESSON AND TOLERATE IT!!
