Meh, the instances you refer to in order to highlight Dashie's bad points are ones driven by the Conflict Ball.

So it's a bit plot contrived...Everypony has episodes that exaggerate certain characteristics to make a point. key emphasis is on "exaggerate"

also, it could be a case of Flanderization:

Well, Johnny also tended to get his butt kicked at every single turn as well.

If anything, he's more like Trixie.

That is by far one of the best comments posted on this entire blog post. Please have my internet for the day.

    4. Why does everyone assume Twilight will be involved in this episode? For all we know RD might be the ONLY pony in this episode (Not that I would WANT that). Just saying.

Also not to complain, but where is our Fluttershy episode already??? We've had at least 5 involving members of the Apple Family (Sisterhooves Social, Cutie Pox, today's episode, and the two coming up) but ZERO Fluttershy eps and we only have 9 left (excluding the valentine's episode...then again they COULD focus on her in that one...maybe). If they don't give her one...;_;.

At least Pinkie Pie is getting a episode next week...Rant over.

    8. @Jimperator Johnny Bravo's funny because it's centred around his social failings in a normal world. MLP is nothing like that and RD remains out of place.

Plus, in the end Johnny Bravo's just trying to get all the ladies to do the monkey with him. Rainbow's just boasting without reason at times when it's not appropriate...

    10. @fa9482e4-0a62-11e1-8ac0-000bcdca4d7a In the best case scenario it'll be about the mane 6 noticing that RD is busy reading and so leave her alone in hospital (as she deserves). The other 5 then go off and do entertaining stuff. The end.

I dunno, I've seen Rainbow Dash smash her face into allot of things, and get beaten back by that dragon after bucking it's nose.

Bad, i know, but right now im playing madden and watching a gears tourney, my mind isnt focused 100% on MLP like normal.

    14. @Eric The episodes in which her bad points became extremely apparent weren't centred much on those bad points except for the morale at the end.

That lead to episodes with a good concept in which RD was being EXTREMELY annoying. I really don't want another one of those episodes.

      ReplyDelete
    15. @Jimperator Easily the best argument so far though. It did take me a while to come up with a reason why I find RD annoying and not Johnny...

    19. @Mr Mailbox

You said you took a while figuring why you don't like Rainbow Dash but like Johnny Bravo. And I remarked that there's really not much that separates characters at the end of the day.

    20. @Mr Mailbox

I said bad in myself. I also am about to go chill and watch Football. Lets go Houston Texans. Arian Foster is a beast.

Also ( and im not calling RD stupid here) but she does make decisions thinking it could work out and ends up not sometimes, she doesnt think it through. Brash

Most of her action are what she thinks are best at the time or in the spirit of a prank.

She thought Tank was creepy cause everyone has an idea of what they want in a pet when they first go looking. You arnt going to pick the first thing that keeps shoving in your face. Was she rude during the competition, yes, but again, she didnt know better. she learned at the end.

Maredowell. She saved a little filly, got praise. And being who she is, it ego stroked her. Save after save she got more praise and thus more cocky. She just knew she could get it done. Thats why she waited so long to save the one mare in the falling airballoon.

Lesson their, different from to find a pet. To find a pet the lesson was that what you think makes a great pet/friend isnt always what will make your best pet/friend. Keep an open mind, and let all kinds of people have a chance to be your friend, you never know what on the inside.(yes i went a little more indepth than the show)

Lesson in Maredowell. Dont let fame go to your head. Just cause you can do something and be good at doing it, be confidant, sure, but not downright showboating. Be confidant, but humble.

As for why she was still so brash in HWE, well, nopony is perfect, old habits hard to break, and thats if the eps are in chronological order.

    23. @Jimperator So you're saying that the reason I like Johnny but not RD is because of the setting, how they're presented and nuances. Hmm... I guess the setting in MLP makes RD seem extremely out of place.

      Presentation? I'm not sure.

      Nuances? Don't think so.

I'm pretty sure there is more to the reason why RD is really irritating and Johnny's hilarious.

But then I read the summary and I was like "Holy sh*t I can't wait"

      ReplyDelete
    26. @Greenf0x Your argument I think can be summarised down to "she is who she is and she learnt her lesson in the end"(correct me if I'm wrong) + a ton of examples.

I hate who she is and people like because of how egocentric they are and the fact that she learned her lesson is irrelevant next to the fact that she made an episode extremely irritating then continued into the next bloody episode all the while talking about how epic she is!

Plus, the bit about tank... http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=i-B1CNHLwF0#t=1017s

It doesn't matter if she thought he was creepy THAT is unacceptable on all levels.
-completely breaks down whenever something bad happens to her
      -Wishes for help
      -gets help
-continues insulting whilst it's trying to save her
-Only recognises it as positive after it has saved her

She literally only cares about things for personal gain or to boost her ego.

      ReplyDelete
    27. @Mr Mailbox

They're both full of themselves. They both say things that make other characters around them figuratively (and literally) fold their arms and shake their heads. Both are narcissistic and over-confident in everything.

The only real difference is one is a complete and total Butt Monkey buffoon, while the other doesn't screw up nearly as much.

      I would call those nuances.

And by Presentation I mean the show's format and style. Johnny Bravo's much more slapstick and situational comedy.

What's wrong with minor differences being the reason anyway? That's how the world is I find.

      ReplyDelete
    31. @Jimperator I guess the slapstick side of Johnny Bravo is what masks Johnny's annoying side.

As with the characters, I think I may like Johnny because he's like that because he's extremely unintelligent. On the other hand RD is like that due to a massive social ineptitude.

Plus Johnny usually only tries to show off when and only when he believes it's appropriate and constructive. Rainbow on the other hand... http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=E2Ltv9fjVe4#t=198s

    41. @Mr Mailbox

Highly debatable to determine what is "appropriate and inappropriate" showing off, I would say.

Considering that was a song, there is no real inappropriate moment for her lyrics. It was done in the style of a musical, and it was her line. So I see no problem there (especially considering it was also made to make the next line rhyme).

To say Johnny only ever shows off when he thinks it's constructive and RD doesn't, seems silly too. Rainbow Dash sought to shut Trixie up by showing off as she figured it constructive as well. So I don't see the distinction there.

This debate is dubious and far to dependent on interpretations of definitions.

      ReplyDelete
    42. @Mr Mailbox

Just think of it like this man, most of the flaws you see(not just in RD but all the mane 6) are mostly an exaggeration of the normal characterization to get to a point in the plot of the ep. Fluttershy doesnt always flip cause she cant take care or get close to an animal, Pinkie has only broke down into pinkimenia once.
Its all for the story of the ep when the flaws are as shining as those. You gotta look to everything they do throughout the series.

Hey, just wanted to join in on the conversation.

Well I also think that Rainbow can be annoying because of her boasting and the way she thinks she's better than anypony else at a lot of things (it hurts to see that a lot of the time actually). But for some reason she has still managed to stay as my favorite character for very long. But why? I've pondered the question for a long time and I think I have an idea of why that is so.

(The points are presented in no order of importance)

      1. I mostly focus on the good traits of a character, rather than the bad. If you do, you get a loyal character with dreams to be something big one day who'd "never leave her friends hanging".

      2. She spent a lot of time with Gilda, which I personally think gave her a lot of bad traits.

      3. To learn something you must first make a mistake. And even though I don't like her mistakes, she learns from them in the moral of the episode. What was annoying in this case though, was that she had two episodes next to each other where it didn't seem like she changed much after the previous episode.

      4. Not that it matters much, but I like her appearance as well. Pegasus is my favorite pony-type and the fact that she is the only one who has performed a sonic rainboom (twice for that matter, saving a friend and three wonderbolts in the process) just makes such an impact on me. I've never been able to determine a favorite color and it's one of those ordinary everyday questions that I hate a LOT, which has brought me to like rainbows because they involve every color.

I'd like to see more from Rainbow without having her being too boastful or egocentric, and I think (hope) this episode will do. But yeah, she can be a bit too much sometimes. But sometimes is not all the time.

I wrote a lot more than I thought I would...

I also don't recall Johnny boasting in general conversation, just when he was going out to do so.

I'm also not suggesting that RD doesn't exclusively try to show off when it's not constructive... Because that would indeed be silly.

      ReplyDelete
    46. Man, we might see a lot of hate for RD, but we do jump and jump hard to her defense when she is called a bad character.

This has gona on sooooo long. In the words of Pinkie Pie: Boooooooorrrrriinnnnggggggggg

Lol but really, shall we move on?

      ReplyDelete
    47. The thing that makes RD's personality bearable for me is that unlike most egotistical people, she does not wish to "hog" the spotlight to the exclusion of others, she only wishes to be IN the spotlight, and is in fact very pleased when others shine as well.

In Mare DO Well she was starting to get too full of herself and blinded by fame, which was the whole reason her friends did what they did.

If she had been a glory hog then at the beginning she would not have just been listening in on her fanclub, she would have gone right in to back in attention.
This is what changed during that episode.

In May the Best Pet Win, the real lesson was "Look beneath the surface". At first impression and for that matter in general, the tortoise would have been a HORRIBLE pet in general, ESPECIALLY for RD. She was right in every way to reject it off hand. In fact, and rightly so, the tortoise had to PROVE itself as a good candidate and friend, by helping Dash when she needed it, opening Dash's eyes and earning her friendship. This formed an emotional relationship, rather than the aesthetic or practical one the other pets would have served. In other words, a very realistic social portrayal and not something unique to egotistical people by any means.

And as for freaking out when anything gets her down, that's pretty much because she's so euphoric most of the time that when she's down the "height she has to fall from flying high to crashing low" is much greater than for other characters (Pinkie has this issue too).

      ReplyDelete
    48. @Greenf0x Pinkie going nuts? Hilarious!

      2. That doesn't change my perspective of her. She's still who she is, the cause is irrelevant.

3.Yes, I admit the two episodes in a row was definitely a factor in my hate.

      4. Really? I hate her appearance. She's visually noisy and intrusive into the already questionable colour scheme.

Im fine with that, we arnt trying to change your opinion on her, or atleast im not. Im just trying to show, she isnt a bad character. Which is what started this whole thing and made it this long.

Really thats all im trying to prove, and get acknowledgment for, that she isnt a bad character, you can be annoyed at her all you want(I use to be annoyed from Rarity and Pinkie) Hate her, but she is a good character, all are in this show. I hate Gilda, she was good fro the lesson and the theme of that ep though.

      ReplyDelete
    57. @DPV111 She wishes to be in the spotlight even when she isn't needed there - intrusive

What changed in those episodes at the conclusion is still irrelevant in my mind. It's a TV show designed to entertain. Including a character that did little bit annoy me for 22 minutes is not a good idea.

Yes the tortoise would have been a bad pet but she spent the entire episode doing nothing but giving shallow insults, telling it to give up and calling it a god damn turtle even when it was saving her. She was quick to accept the others based on sheer appearance.

Rainbow's breaking down is full of self pity and whining (no, not complaining). Pinkie's breakdown is full of split personalities and desperation to please others. Certainly says something.

Yoy don't need to like her. Everyone has their own preferences and tastes. We're debating this not because you have an opinion, but because a lot of what you are saying is in fact skewed and misrepresenting the character.

3.Yes, I admit the two episodes in a row was definitely a factor in my hate.

RD always has better scenes in episodes where she isn't the main focus.

She told the tortoise off because she was distraught at the prospect of being in that situation, and she didn't learn the Aesop until the Tortoise saved her. What you see as selfish egotism, I see as dawning realization.

The view of a RD being read by a RD fan. I'd be extremely surprised if my view isn't viewed as biased by 80% of the readers.

I found Pinkie's breakdown extremely funny because she was talking to herself, pretending she had lots of friends and looked completely mental.

I didn't find RD's breakdown funny because it was composed of her crying, feeling sorry for herself and insulting a "turtle"...

Basically, Rainbow failed to deliver humour to me in a show I watch for the humour, instead I got her thinking only about herself.

I doubt that anything people can say will ever make me mentally excuse her for the sheer level of stupidity she shows here, plus the fact that she insulted her friend for having at least the slightest bit of intelligence.

The view of a RD being read by a RD fan. I'd be extremely surprised if my view isn't viewed as biased by 80% of the readers.

Yes I'm a fan of hers. But haven't I made it clear I'm not biased in my views? I've conceded her negative qualities numerous times. I've yet to hear you list a positive however. That's why others here (some not even RD fans) are calling you out on many of your statements.

I found Pinkie's breakdown extremely funny because she was talking to herself, pretending she had lots of friends and looked completely mental.

I didn't find RD's breakdown funny because it was composed of her crying, feeling sorry for herself and insulting a "turtle"...

Yes it was funny. She's the Element of Laughter and the comedic relief when there's none to be had.

On the other hand Dash's was meant to be more poignant and less comedic. I thought it was emotional and touching, myself.

Basically, Rainbow failed to deliver humour to me in a show I watch for the humour, instead I got her thinking only about herself.

If the only reason for excusing one's breakdown, and ripping the other is comedy, then well... That's your flavor. But I'm more inclusive. I love this show for more then just the funnies.

    70. Rainbow Dash SECRETLY discovers the joy of reading implies TwiDash???

      ReplyDelete
    71. @Jimperator Well, yeh. My views are biased as hell. I don't have a positive comment because I'm yet to think of one significant enough...

The comedy is a massive factor for me in this show, and whilst there are others, watching a character wallow in a ton of self pity after complimenting herself for a quarter of an hour did not happen to satisfy me much...

      ReplyDelete
    72. @Jimperator
I watch this show because the characterization is some of the best I've seen since my old fandom Wolfs Rain.
Each character was different from the other but the four stuck together to survive in a world were they would be killed or enslaved to revel the salvation of humanity, however humans could not enter Paradise.
That and I've always loved horses since I was nine.

Personally, I like seeing a character knocked off their high horse (pun not intended) and dragged through a little mud. Which is what I saw when she became distraught at her situation in the canyon after having been so confident and arrogant prior.

But you have your perceptions and I have mine. And I don't think we'll be finding much common ground on the subject that is Rainbow Dash.

So I must bid this debate adieu. It was a pleasure discussing with you, however. For the part all was civil and didn't degrade into a childish war of insults.

      ReplyDelete
    74. @Mr Mailbox

I'm glad to see none has resorted to swearing (I don't care about words like "hell". Does not count as swearing to me). To me that proves that this conversation is still very mature compared to the total chaos on your everyday forum. Well done everyone.

Anyway I understand your hate for her being egocentrical and boastful, because she is that way. The ones who like her (me being among them) just looks past that. I'm glad though, to see that you WANT an episode with her where she's less boastful, as do I. So all I can say is that I sincerely hope that this episode redeems here after the last two.

      ReplyDelete
    75. @Travis Smith

Hmm... Never watched Wolfs Rain... Too sad.

      ReplyDelete
    76. @Travis Smith

I've not seen that show, myself. I heard good things about it when it had it's run though.

And I would say MLP makes me look at equines differently. I always thought they were cool as war mounts, but now thanks to FiM... They're pretty cute too, I guess.

      ReplyDelete
    77. @Khan Swearing is fine when it's not used solely to describe something. They're viewed as "taboo" and their use solely emphasizes points. So they can be used and still be mature if they're not the centre of an argument.

I tried to look past her boastfulness for the better part of may the best pet win but in the end I simply found that she was doing that too frequently, too often and with too much sincerity. Two out of her three (I think) episodes has been none stop boasting so I concluded that there was simply nothing to look past. What may be left I did not bother searching for as there are other, purely "good" characters for me to like.

For the point of conversation, why exactly do people like her?

      ReplyDelete
    78. What I like about her:

      - Confident demeanor
      - unwavering and headstrong against threats
      - Prankster (She and Pinkie make a great duo when she's being Prankster!Dash)
      - Jerk with a Heart of Gold (That's a trope - whereas Gilda was a Jerk with a heart of Jerk)
      - Her flaws are a goldmine to fanon
      - She looks pretty cool

      ReplyDelete
    79. Yay another Rainbow Dash episode. Can't wait for it to come out :D

      ReplyDelete
    80. @Mr Mailbox

I personally don't mind swearing, but it makes me think that the person using the word isn't as serious as he may intend. I especially despise words that are offensive, but let's not get into that.

Well she's not boastful in every episode. For example in episode 5 in season 1 "griffon the brush off" she learns to accept Pinkie's randomness and ends up becoming a close friend to her. When her old friend Gilda appears she stands up to her new friends when she realizes that Gilda is being an asshole. As far as I can remember from that episode, she's not really bragging once. The only thing close to it is when she competes with Gilda from cloud to cloud.

      Why I like her?
I like her element, loyalty, even if she doesn't get to show it often.
I like her dream of becoming a wonderbolt.
I like her style (Her dress for the gala was by far my favorite).
There is also one factor that I've been thinking about more than once when I tend to get a favorite character... When a character that is boastful, or egocentrical, acts the opposite. It means a lot more than if anyone else would have done it.

But you know, my view, your view, completely unrelated.

But I stand true to my earlier post that I'm glad that the discussion has stayed mature.

      ReplyDelete
    81. @KhanHmm, all of those views are quite reasonable reasons to like her just ones that would not really appeal to me. That explains it.

I admit that in season 1 she's a decent character imo just not a particularly special or interesting one. It's only when she goes into boasting overdrive where she really pissed me off.

Also when she was boasting with Gilda, that was probably more friendly banter, so that's perfectly fine in a character.

I guess I stay less attached to characters and will hate them at the drop of a hat the moment they start acting annoying.

      ReplyDelete
    82. We are getting a Pinkie Pie episode next week and two Applejack episodes after that and I am sure Fluttershy is getting one too. Stop complaining people.
I can't wait for this episode, just reading the synopsis got me excited. I am expecting much more than RD just getting a broken wing, she'll probably crash into something by accident and injure most of her body. I am expecting more of a sad/heartwarming episode and kind of dark episode from this. Hopefully this will make up for Mare Do Well,

    83. @Nightmare Moon
I'm always shocked when people don't notice a qualitative difference between Trixie's bragging and Dash's bragging. Though the events of MDW launched her to near Trixie levels.

      ReplyDelete
    84. For the point of conversation, why exactly do people like her?

Because although she's the most obviously flawed, he flaws are the most reasonable and understandable of the Mane 6. I find her interesting in the complexity and layers to hr character.

At the same time I respect her because although her personality is abrasive at times, she tends to have a very strong value system, as well as tends to always put her money where her mouth is.

I work with a lot of strong personalities in an environment where it is important to watch out for each other. I put up with some very hard to take people because I know I can count on them; and I avoid some rather pleasant ones because I don't trust or respect them enough to want them around me.

Rainbow Dash does well with responsibility, usually makes the right decision, takes pride in her own strengths but never tends to overestimate herself, is ambitious without being backstabbing, proves herself when challenged, vindicates herself when doubted, and is just cynical, practical and wary enough to not be taken advantage of without being overly standoffish or unfriendly. She understands who she is and what she wants and doesn't care if others disagree. She wants to be admired for her merits and abilities, but doesn't want to pander to what others want her to be.

The only thing I strongly feel is negative about her is her recklessness.

That said, she's also cool looking and does some pretty awesome stuff.
She's a very non standard character for a standard archetype.
I sympathize with her due to the amount of assumptions heaped on her.
I also like strong characters who show vulnerability.

There's probably more but that's what I can think of....

      ReplyDelete
    85. @scienceandponies

Well, to me, the fact still remains, both brag, and it just irritates me when I see someone rag on Trixie because of the bragging and they like Dash because of the bragging.

      ReplyDelete
    86. @Nightmare Moon

      The main differences are these:

1: Dash never puts herself up to put others down. She's positive where Trixie used her boasting almost as an insult to others.

2: Dash BRAGS, Trixie BOASTS. Trixie talks a lot of shit but can't back it up and flat out lies a lot of the time. Dash just wants ponies to see how awesome she sees herself.

      ReplyDelete
    93. I'm sorry, but I'm seriously tired of all the fucking Rainbow Dash and Applebloom episdoes. For Christ's sake, almost none of the other ponies are getting that much attention. I'm really disappointed with season two mostly because the episodes don't have /nearly/ as much diversity of characters as the season one did.
Honestly, can we have some episodes /not/ about those two? They don't even write letters to Princess Celestia as much anymore! Lord, can we have some freaking Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, and Applejack episodes? And not an ass ton of episodes about them /all in a row/ please.
Don't get me wrong, I love Rainbow Dash. But her chcaracter gets fucking annoying after a while. I still love the other characters just as much and would like to see more of them as well.
Seriously, I almost don't want to keep watching season two, since I /know/ who the rest of its going to be about...

      ReplyDelete
    104. This episode sounds really awesome for some reason. Also, I'm thinking she gets in the hospital because of some disease, not because of injury, despite her dangerous stunts, most of the time when an accident does happen she recovers quite quickly, not to mention stuff like causing big explosions by crashing at high speeds intentionally.

      ReplyDelete
    105. sounds like a good episode, I'm curious to see why she's hospitalized, knowing how much she can handle physically I'd agree that it's most likely some sort of illness that she makes worse by trying to work through it knowing how stubborn she is.

It does sound like a piece of good short fanfiction which makes me wonder just how much the story writers are watching the fandom. This is a good thing and I can't wait to see the execution of this episode.

    114. I knew you guys would bring over the whole RD 'arrogance' issue and the way the two RD episodes we had were subpar, yadda yadda.

I thought all RD episodes were very entertaining and the next one would no doubt be amazing as well.

As for the arrogance thing, I don't let it bother me. If you had a wide circle of friends or at least have ever went to a school and look around you, you'd find some of those arrogant/brash types around. The thing with this show is that it uses that as a way to expand upon RD's persona. It in no way condemns her for it. It's like how Rarity has a serious selfishness streak, but her selfless nature still shines through.

As for lack of Fluttershy/Pinkie episodes, I bet things would go haywire if the last 10 or so episodes are ALL Fluttershy/Pinkie episodes. But I won't mind. Finally people could stop complaining to high water about RD for once! (though people will CERTAINLY complain about Fluttershy/Pinkie no doubt)

Assuming the rumored 3 parter end of season is true, that leaves only 6 Episodes to possibly be character specific. FOr these to fairly even out the series, 3 will need to be Fluttershy Episodes, 2 will need to be Pinkie Pie Episodes, and 1 will need to be an Applejack Episode.

      ReplyDelete

Couldn't have said it better myself.

There's more to RD than meets the eye. She may appear to be rude, arrogant and insensitive, but she does have a clear set of principles and a strong sense of justice. Indeed, it is the intricate balance between her flaws and redeeming qualities which makes her such an interesting and unconventional character within the show's context.

As for the upcoming RD episode... I guess I'll just have to wait and see how it turns out.

    125. Rainbow Dash ending up in the hospital?

      It's about time!

Considering the number of crash-landings she's had, she's long overdue for a stay in the hospital.

I would be pleansantly surprised if this takes place right after getting Tank. Yeah, I know we saw the happy ending, but there was an obvious time-skip between the end of the race and the happy ending of "May The Best Pet Win". A story about Rainbow Dash in the hospital could easily fit into that slice of time, although I'm not counting on it.

      ReplyDelete
    126. There is a good chance that much of this episode will be in Rainbow's imagination. This could well be the most epic episode ever.
