ReplyDelete@Batty Gloom Yeh, my views are pretty much based on her worst moments but they are also the moments when she is focused on the most and, for "acting like a complete moron" look at 8:45 of may the best pet win.
ReplyDeleteIf she had more important times when she wasn't annoying, other than in the sonic rainboom, I would like her a lot more. As for twilight and fluttershy, both of those times are single occasions which they both regretted and tried to make up for and had good intentions. It didn't reflect their usual character.

And because then cretins scenes would be made and I don't want to see that on it. Also, what the hell? Too many Dash episodes, even though she is adorable in this fic and slightly arrogant, yet so awesome in the show.
I will admit that a premise such as this sounds downright awesome, and it has the potential to be a DAMN good one at that.

With each episode that comes our way that doesn't feature the Element of Kindness, the more and more I think that when it finally does come, it's going to floor me with unbridled win.

ReplyDeleteIt's not the important moments that matter, it's all the moments. Here is a short, not-exhaustive list of Dash's better moments.
First time she meets Twilight, she apologizes for running into her (probably a stun accident) and dries her off. While she does laugh at Twilight's hair, Spike, the first best friend, also laughs, setting this up as a "funny to most characters" moment.
She says she wants to hang out with Twilight more.
Willing to fight a manicore to protect her friends.
Does not betray her friends for the chance of owning her own stunt time.
Willing to help Applejack and the rest of her friends buck apples.
Hangs out with Pinkie Pie after she realizes she's not as annoying as she first thought.
Sticks up for Pinkie Pie against her older friend Gilda.
Tells Twilight she's proud of her after she saves the town from an Ursa Minor.
Tries her best to help with the Parasprite invasion. Best attempt fails mostly due to outside intervention (Pinkie Pie showing up with cymbals messing up her cyclone).
Says she would have loved to have Twilight help her with the clouds but of course Twilight doesn't have wings.
Helps Applebloom with Cutie Mark ideas.
Is willing to get potentionally scratched by an angry cat in order to help drag Rarity out of her depression in order to show her the finished dress.
Is willing to fight an army of Diamond Dogs to protect Rarity.
Willing to stick up for the land rights of people she barely knows who arguably have a stronger claim.
Was willing to defend Fluttershy against bullies who were probably the "cool kids".
Would not allow Pinkie Pie to wallow in her own misery and insanity.
Was willing to catch a statue to keep it from falling (fails but it's the intent).
Obeys Twilight's order without fail during the cotton candy cloud crisis.
Supports the princess.
Cheers the entire team.
After being cured of Discord's corruption, was concerned about everything except herself.
Again, not exhaustive but those are some of her better moments. And in my opinion, every moment is important, not just the "awesome" or "big" moments.

@Batty Gloom If it's your opinion that it's not the important moments that apply then my argument does not apply to your counterargument. The other characters manage to remain entertaining, funny and interesting during important moments as well as the times the focus isn't on them (with the exception of rarity near the start) and that is the reason I think they are much better.

ReplyDeleteThat's pretty much what I'm expecting to. Sorry RD fans, but of all of the main characters she is the least likely to receive any long term character development (except maybe Pinkie Pie).
All the characters are enjoyable. it just depends on how you view them. Dash is a lot more enjoyable if you start to view her as the pony who's supposed to be brash and a bit egocentric.

Dashie is too embarrassed to admit reading such girly-girl stuff, especially ones where the heroine is getting rescued instead of doing the rescuing, but she likes them too much to stop. Probably her reading gives her the courage to ask out a colt she likes.

Wow, that sounds like a fanfic that I was going to write. The difference was that it wasn't going to be the main focus of the story. It was just going to be Rainbow Dash mentioning how to used to play chess when she was a filly because she injured herself. ReplyDeleteShe reminds me of the cutie mark crusaders to be honest. I absolutely hated them during the first season and I still think their two episodes are by far the worst. In this series they are tolerable and they had a couple good episodes. Some people liked them because they like the personalities of children, but I don't.
In this series, RD's two episodes have been the worst and are only bearable because of the inclusion of the other characters. Her personality has also been extremely annoying but she was tolerable in the first series.
The point still stands, at the moment she is an awful character and I'm not looking forwards to further episodes centred around her. If they managed to rectify her as a character that's great but she will be forever tainted to me by the stupidity she showed in those two episodes
The only shipping between mane-6 characters in this show is Friendshipping. That's it. No need for any further discussion on that matter.

As long as she isn't actively being a damper on the situation with her self-promotion, like she WAS BEING in the middle of MDW, then there is little harm in her promotion. sure, it can get a little annoying or out of place, but it's not nearly as bad as you're portraying.
Also, the examples you're citing are situations where they're setting her up for character development later on in the episode. you seem to be getting caught up in the details of the episodes and forgetting the end result, like when she apologized(if you will) for how she was acting, in MDW, and when she admitted how short sighted she was being.
that, is character development, and from what i can see, you're not letting it carry through cause you're getting caught up in the details of the episode that are leading up to the conclusion.

ReplyDeleteEssentially what makes a "good character" is as diverse as what makes a good sandwich. Or what your favorite flavor of ice cream is.
However, from what I've seen, imperfection tends to to be a near-universal "good character" trait. And RD, like the mane cast, is imperfect. In her own way. She's insensitive at times, she's a braggart, impatient and a prankster.
She's also firm and unwavering in her beliefs, and in her loyalty to those she holds dear. She is, in ironic essence, a very "grounded" character. She's also nearly as good as she claims to be. Some people like confident characters. She is in essence The Big Ham of the mane cast.
You don't have to like that character model, but calling her a "bad character" does nothing for your point other then to seem antagonistic to her fans.

ReplyDeleteWhile that is true, I don't think that character development is something that you can honestly expect to stick. While the mane six have dimensions to them they also have a pretty obvious character trait that the writers can go to when they need to figure out what they will do in a situation. As such RD is pegged as the team jerk with a big ego, and to be honest it is to easy from a comedic standpoint to write that sort of character that I don't think we will see her develop beyond that.

Whilst, yes, episodes are about character development and their ultimate enlightenment at the end and I'm picking out the middle part, the middle part is also the meat of the episode and I don't appreciate some jerk talking about how great she is for 20 damn minutes of my favourite cartoon series and then continue in the next episode!

Rarity, Rarity comes off as very snooty at times, it's like the Return of the Elements part 1 when she asked Applejack if there was anything she could do...without getting wet or out from her umbrella.

As I mentioned, if the Dash fans didn't hate Trixie as much, I'd either probably put Trixie lower on my list of favorites, or put Dash higher.
@Jimperator Also, trixie doesn't deserve hate as the boasting she does is for a VERY good cause. It's her career, she needs to do it. She would obviously be more successful if she toned down the boasting but at least she has some kind of motive.

I could say I don't like Fluttershy because she's a feeble, whiny-ass coward. I could say I don't like Rarity because she's a greedy, supercilious asshole. I could say I don't like Applejack because she portrays your stereotypical redneck character (DISCLAIMER: this is a term of endearment: I AM a redneck, therefore it is OK for me to say).

ReplyDeleteFluttershy manages to catch up to RD in the return of harmony part 2 but only when motivated. Yes RD was having to carry a cloud but fluttershy was moving a hot air balloon with a humongous surface area.

ReplyDeleteIt would be annoying to me too because it doesn't fit their character models. I wouldn't want two Rainbow Dash's or Two Twilight Sparkles or two Fluttershys, etc. That spoils the character dynamic.
But yes, you've established you don't like bragging at all. I can respect that, it's your personal preference.
But me? I like a braggart. I like jerks who can show they're not complete assholes. I like anti-heros. Hell I even like irredeemable villians. I also love Fluttershy's good intentioned, non-confrontational self. And I like Applejack's down-to-earth personality.
I like characters of all stripes. Variation is just my thing.

Dash fans in specific are Trixie haters?... I don't hate Trixie. I thought she was a great antagonist. Perhaps you see the vitriol for her from Dash fans more readily because they see Rainbow compared to Trixie often enough that it grates them?

@Jimperator Ah, a logical reason (albeit rare) reason to like RD. If you can stand people like that you are extremely lucky! I've personally met two people who actually boast. One is doing it for a laugh and is usually joking and the other stopped boasting because nobody likes people who boast in the slightest.

ReplyDeleteThat was a major point of it, yes, and that's a reason I don't hate Trixie as Fluttershy was seen once in that episode and never again, which is odd giving that she probably could've calmed the Ursa Minor.
As for Gilda, yes, the Fluttershy deal was a major point, but unlike Trixie who was just being egotistical, Gilda was just being a downright jerk.

Speaking from a literary perspective, she was the least-developed (and consequently, weakest character) of the Mane 6 at the end of the season one. This, of course, left her as the one with which the writers had the most leway, the most room to try something new. Can't blame 'em.

ReplyDeleteWait, hold on...people are still arguing about Fluttershy chasing down RD with the hot air balloon? Not sure if anybody's pointed this out yet, but the weight of the hot air balloon, Twilight, and AJ was all *buoyant*, whereas the hanging weight of Rarity and Pinkie was not. As such, RD had to use much more of her energy to compensate just to create sufficient lift, let alone escape. Drag created from air resistance of the balloon would not come close to being as taxing as having to carry two more who by no means can stay aloft.

ReplyDeleteI completely understand why Dash is probably the most disliked character on the show, but it is the same reason that I'm drawn to her: she is flawed. Heavily. Without going into detail, I can identify with her because I too am heavily flawed. I'm still constantly learning new life lessons on a daily basis, and I'm always trying to incorporate them into my personality, but it's a case of "changing but always staying the same". Old habits die hard, but it doesn't mean you're not trying to be a better individual.
Personality wise, I'm more like Applejack: a hard-working, humble southerner that can get along with anyone, but Dash is my pony avatar, and no matter how bad things get, she always will be.

Shipping between Rarity and Spike is heavily implied. But you will not see the mane 6 shipped with one another. This isn't the sort of show for romance to be added into the story arc like some soap opera.

Stated another way, all but the most pedantic of viewers will forgive liberties with reality as long as the result is wicked sweet or awesome. This applies to the audience in general; there will naturally be a different threshold for each individual.
Fluttershy being awesome allowed her to do things she would otherwise never do. But then Ponies are always awesome so there's nothing they can't do.
