BigMacinTosh llines that weren't nope and eyup What are you a dictionary ponyville backstory bee beards Timberwolves oh yeah, this was a great episode but who the heck was that random new grey colt hanging around?
Another excellent episode. Quite enjoyable to see the back story of both Granny Smith and Ponyville. It was also funny to see all the fanon being destroyed. Keep up the good work!
Well, any fanfic that portrayed Ponyville as being more than 2 or 3 generations old just got knocked into can't-be-reconciled-with-canon status.
And I'm pretty sure this is the first real sign of a split between Silver Spoon and Diamond Tiara. I wonder if this'll be developed any further in future episodes.
I was like "eh, this episode is alright" then the last ten minutes happened. Awesome. Not going to be one of the best of season two, but it's a pretty good episode just for that part at the end. Also, the fan art practically draws itself.
I'm sure that the look of Granny Smith's dad was based on Michael Landon from "Little House on the Prairie".
I LOLed when Princess Celestia appeared in the flashback. DYN: Granny Smith's mom got a little jealous when her dad kissed Celestia's hoof. It would be awesome if someone could do a comic of Celestia and Granny Smith meeting again and reminiscing about when Ponyville got founded: the fact that Celestia didn't age would be hard to ignore. :-)
Beautiful all the way round. It might start a bit slow, but as soon as Granny Smith tells the story it's just...Wow. Manly tears guys, manly tears. Love the episode, more than I first expected.
Ponyville was founded "hundreds of years ago" according to Winter Wrap-Up. Granny Smith was there before it was founded. Granny Smith is hundreds of years old.
Therefore, ponies live for centuries. Therefore, Equestria has only existed for a few generations.
I always thought that the Apple Clan could trace their heritage back to the founding of Ponyville, I didn't expect Ponyville to turn out to be only a couple of generations old!
Well, Appaloosa was built in a few months, so it shouldn't come as a surprise for Ponyville to be so large yet still a young town.
by the way... how old is Granny Smith? She was older than Applebloom / about as old as the Mane Six during the founding of Ponyville and the town has grown quite a lot since then... Ponies confirmed for living way longer than humans?
Loved the episode. Glad there was no friendship report. Just means that they aren't forcing them in there. That and this was a lesson about family, not friendship. That flashback was amazing. Another job well done Studio B!
Wow. Diamond Tiara's father seems like a halfway decent pony. Silver Spoon being the first to applaud was a nice touch. Plus, does anybody think young Granny Smith looks really pretty?
Young Granny Smith was cute. Now I know where AJ and her presumed mother got their looks. I didn't count any appearances of the other Mane 6 aside from Applejack. Apple Bloom is my second favorite pony after Twilight, though (my little list from last week was in no specific order). The feel of an episode like this is completely different from, say, a Rainbow Dash episode.
So basically without Granny Smith and the Apple family, there would be no Ponyville.
Oh, and this ep was simply fantastic. I hoped we'd get to see a young Granny Smith and I was not disappointed. In fact, it's clear Granny Smith is best pony of her generation.
I wish Diamond Tiara wasn't so one-dimensional, though. Right now she's completely loathsome, and nothing else. She'd be a more a interesting villain if she had a redeeming quality or two to her.
My interpretation is that Twilight meant that Earth ponies have wrapped up winter without magic for hundreds of years, and that Ponyville was started by Earth ponies.
Basically, my headcanon is that Twilight jumbled up her sentence due to the excitement of wrapping up winter "the Earth pony way". And meant it in a different phrasing.
There, it's patched up in my mind, right up until canon breaks it again.
I went into this episode hoping for one thing: Some backstory for the Apple family. Not only did I get that but I got electrified apples, probably the single greatest idea for a fruit since the Devil Fruit from One Piece. So overall, I enjoyed it.
As for Twilight's remark in WWU, I'm gonna say that either she implied that earth ponies in general have done it, or she was simply mistaken as for how long Ponyville actually existed. :p
Granny was there after all, so unless she's centuries old I'm going to say Twilight misspoke. :)
This episode: Granny Smith helped found Ponyville. Winter Wrap Up: Twilight: "Ponyville was started by Earth Ponies, so for HUNDREDS OF YEARS they've never used magic to clean up winter." So unless that was an exaggeration, Granny Smith is hundreds of years old.
"Ponyville was started by earth ponies, so for hundreds of years they've never used magic to clean up winter"
There's a semantic problem in this sentence.
One it doesn't say for hundreds of years they used magic to clean up PONYVILLE specifically. Just that they clean up winter in ponyville the earth pony way because earth ponies founded it.
Earth Ponies never used magic to clean up winter for a very obvious reason, earth pony magic exists and they withhold it's use in Winter Wrap Up.
Maybe it's the fact that I'm not 100% focused on this episode, but I'll be opted to say it isn't my Top fav. It's a good episode, don't get me wrong, it's just not Top 3. Maybe Top 5 or 6.
Liked: - Big Mac finally says some things besides Eeyup and Nope, even if they were only short phrases. - A young Granny Smith. - Granny Smith's antics were pretty entertaining, although it seems to contradict other episodes where she can barely move. (I predict Meet The Soldier parodies within an hour.) - Zap Apples. Suddenly Applejack's job just got a whole lot cooler. - Timber Wolves. I'm always up for new monsters in Equestria. Shame they had such little camera time. - Apple Bloom in a bunny suit. D'AWWWWWW - Ponyville Backstory. Hell. Yes.
Didn't Like: - No letter to Princess Celestia, not even the implication that it was already written or will be written later? Lame. - More of Diamond Tiara being a bitch just for the sake of being a bitch. Is she ever going to get any character development? - It features one of my pet peeve aesops: Appreciate your family no matter how embarrassing they may be, not because they're your family, but because they might have hidden depths you didn't know about. - Applebloom got off scot free for her behavior. She just tried to send her grandmother out of town, and there were no lasting repercussions.
So while the number of good things is greater than the number of bad things, the things that were off held slightly more weight for me. Despite all the amazing things this episode had to offer, I have to say that this episode was overall underwhelming. I was hoping for something much bigger following a three-week hiatus.
My score 3/5. Liked it slightly more than the average episode.
- Second episode not to feature Twilight Sparkle. - First episode to feature precisely ONE member of the mane cast, if I'm not mistaken! This one is hard to beat. - Sweet Apple Acres is older than Ponyville. Granny Smith is older than Ponyville. Fanfiction taking place in the past, take note! - At the same time, Ponyville must have been an earth pony town long enough for the Winter Wrap Up tradition to form. Which means that the unicorns and pegasi living there today can't have been for very long at all. What that implies, I cannot say. Looking at Appleoosa, it's not unusual for new settlements to be almost exclusively earth pony for a while. Pegasi probably come in later to pacify the weather, and unicorns move in over time as less and less of the town's ponies have to focus on agriculture. Oh dear, I have no idea what I'm talking about. Any brony sociologists? - Timberwolves: New monster to beat in fanfiction. Bring matches. - Trollestia strikes again by sending off hopeful settlerponies someplace close to the dreadful, uncontrollable magic forest without sufficient provisions to make it to the first harvest.
That episode was terrific, 9/10 and only that because there was no friendship letter. We got to see Granny Smith's parents and....brothers or uncles or something, old Canterlot, Filthy Rich and Stinking Rich, timber-wolves, the founding of Ponyville, rainbow apples, puppet Granny Smith Weekend at Bernie's thing, and did she say magic is as magic does? For that would be great. Forrest Gump is awesome. Also, who doesn't love diamond Tiara getting what she deserves in the end? This may just be my favorite episode even though I would be betraying Fluttershy to say so. Well this is already too long so this is the end bronies.
"- More of Diamond Tiara being a bitch just for the sake of being a bitch. Is she ever going to get any character development?"
Being a bitch IS her character. Her purpose on the show is to antagonize the CMC. Perhaps they may have some development set aside for her in the future, but it seems to me that isn't something that's high on the list of the writers priorities.
@Spikely Whiplash Gotta agree with you there to be honest. I'm just glad to get a new episode :D However, I'm not the biggest fan of The Apple family (apart from Big Mac) so I wasn't expecting genius to begin with :)
Well, you can't have favorite episodes without having least favorites. Now, before anypony jumps all over me, allow me to explain.
I would be a dirty, dirty liar if I said that this was a bad episode and I didn't enjoy it. That is not the case at all. Zap apples are the coolest thing since sliced bread, and the history of Ponyville was quite enlightening, even if it raises ten more questions. Also, DAT YOUNG GRANNY SMITH.
Remember, just because something is your least favorite doesn't mean it's bad; it still has "favorite" in it, after all.
I'm going to have to say my headcannon believes that Granny Smith is 75-80 years old otherwise she would be AJ's great, great, great, great etc. grandma. Going with this replaces anything that may have been said in WWU.
@Don't Call me Brony (please) Also, in one episode (I forget which) We actually see Spike sign his name and although simplified, you can clearly make out english letters.
I LOVED this episode, but this episode also raised a big question for me. Why is the Apple family in need of money? Remember that Applejack's sole motivation for going to the Grand Galloping Gala was to earn some revenue to fix an old barn and get Granny a hip replacement, and this implies that they do not normally make enough per year to do more than make ends meet. However, this episode just showed that the Apple family is the sole supplier of a jelly so delicious that it practically founded a town. So again, why is the Apple family in need of money. I don't really think they would just give it away if Granny needed a hip replacement, and Filthy Rich stated that he would be buying the first 100 jars
Did anyone else notice that there weren't any Pegasi in Canterlot in the flashback scene (except for the Royal Guards)? Seeing how Canterlot was (and still is) mainly populated by Unicorns, and Celestia even placing the Earth Pony Settlers outside of Canterlot... Differences between the different Pony Races still seem to play a noticeable role in Equestrian society; even after the Hearth's Warming events...
I understand that Granny Smith is named after the apple, but I have to wonder what it must have been like for her as a young filly being called 'Granny'... The apple family is silly. I think that's why they make up the majority of my favorite characters.
As we can *logically* deduce from THIS episode : @Nova25
And, ''they'' kinda relates to ''Earth ponies'', like those who founded Ponyville but not restricted to Ponyville-only... After all, it's in the 'Earth Pony way' to not use magic, when doing something.
There's very little you can do with Diamond Tiara. Once you hit that stage then there's few places you can go and still root for the character.
I suppose her father could cut her off while Silver Spoon is vacationing in Prance. Tossed out on her butt for refusing to realize it takes work to run a mega business retail chain.
Cut off from her money and comfortable life style, Diamond is at first very self pitying. She runs into the CMC who are, at first, more than a little pleased at her comeuppance. But Applebloom takes pity on her and asks her to help out with the harvest for some bits. Diamond reluctantly agrees.
At the harvest she learns just how lucky she had it. She isn't better because she's richer. She's enjoyed the fruit of her parents and grand parent's work. We also see her critique a number of Apple cooking wares and tells them how they could be made better (by complaining about it) and demonstrating her talent is criticism (rather than shallow bitchiness).
Episode ends with her father checking out the latest Apple Acre's wares and Diamond Tiara apologizes. Of course once Silver Spoon shows up she reverts a little to her snide self.
That's how I'd write a Diamond Tiara gets depth episode anyway...
@Jimperator Well actually you don't use the original Alphabet, you use a variation of it renamed the Alphabet, even if it is called the Latin Alphabet. The original I forget but in ancient times, some letters didn't even really exist. I don't believe there was a "j", or a "k", and some letters were used differently. BTW don't get this confused with the Greek Alphabeta, where it had characters now similar to symbols with letters such as alpha, beta, and the like, since Latin and Greek are two very different languages.
"No, Spike, Ponyville was started by Earth Ponies, so for hundreds of years they've never used magic to clean up winter."
(Winter Wrap-Up, approx 40 secs from start)
Sorry, no. She clearly says that Ponyville was started hundreds of years ago. What we have here is an example of bad script editing. They have now canonically stated that Granny Smith is hundreds of years old.
I want memes of: 1. That funny looking chubby pony 2. Epic congratulatory scenes from movies with old Granny Smith's face faded in the background 3. Sweetie Bell's Evil Face (from Granny inspecting Apple Bloom's thermometer) 4. REJECTED/DENIED when Sweetie Belle bucks a Zap Apple Tree Tree puns about "Timberwolves"
Thank you for not jumping all over me for a differing opinion, first of all.
I just would like to correct one thing, however. I did like the episode. There hasn't been an episode, from Season 1 OR 2, that I have outright disliked.
Celestia banish me when I start disliking episodes...
Diamond Tiara is THE bitch. There is no such thing as developing out of that, or else she ceases to be the bitch. Which completely invalidates her character. And it's not for no reason, she's a snob, raised by snobs, who were always snobs. She believes she's superior to everyone else because of her family's money.
Which means she de-ponifies them, they're not exactly 'people' so much in her mind. So long as they can provide some amusement or at least not be a bother to her, she doesn't care if they exist.
Beyond that, I really felt this Ponyville backstory thing was rushed together. The town's too established to have only been around for something like 30-40 years.
Top that off, Canterlot was just the castle and some tents according to the flashback. Which means Granny Smith must be INCREDIBLY ancient. You don't build something like modern Canterlot in a decade or two. It looked more like it'd only been recently settled since Celestia moved from the Castle of the Sisters. Maybe 50-100 years after.
It was most certainly 'He Who Waits in Silence'. What you saw was his corruption reaching out to our world to signal his heralds to sing the song of our undoing... oh... wait. Never mind, I think I know what you are referring to. It looked like the animators were having a little trouble with flash again.
@Don't Call Me Brony (Please) Says that Earth Ponies have been cleaning up Winter manually for hundreds of years, I imagine that this tradition has been around in all earth pony villages and towns.
Its probably a pre-heart warming tradition too considering.
@Party Pony @Silfir Really guys, calling Trollestia? She was kind and benevolent. If you want to accuse any of the forms, you could say Molestia only for Granny Smith's dad kissing her hoof, and that's even a stretch.
Predictable is fine, but there seemed to be some missed opportunities for character development along the way. If Applejack or Big Mac had been aware of Applebloom's feelings this would have added some sense of conflict to the episode. Sweetie Belle's own parents would have been a wonderful tool to explore the sense of familial embarrassment common among peers. And Granny just showing up in the classroom to tell the story without a hint of tension in the process felt like kind of an anti-climax.
As nice as it is to to see back-stories getting more fleshed out, that's not a substitute for compelling storytelling. It was sweet but not much more than that.
Wait, wait, wait. Just f@ckin wait. That map doesn't make sense.
It shows distance from Ponyville to Canterlot being roughly the same as distance to Everfree forest.
Now, we know that forest is within 5 min walking distance from Ponyville (in fact, Fluttershy's house is right at the forest's edge). Yet Canterlot Castle is seated on faraway mountain past Ponyville, and mane 6 took carriage or train to reach it.
Also, no Manehattan on the map. Yet filly Applejack walked to it within single day.
The only sensible answer I see is that map is just a rough scheme, not geographically-correct.
Also for further note as to what I was getting at previously.
Hundreds of years Earth Ponies cleared winter by hoof before Ponyville.
Now the question comes to pass.
How long has the castle of the pony sisters been in the Ever Free Forest before parts of it were settled by Earth Ponies.
Where did the Earth Ponies go when Equestria was discovered as it is obvious Cloudsdale and Canterlot predate Ponyville. Thereby Pegasi and Unicorns stuck close together whereas Earth Ponies went elsewhere? Now the plot thickens as Earth ponies grow the food... my guess is Manehatten is where the Earth Ponies originially started out.
But it still doesn't explain the castle of the pony sisters. Elaborate on my findings somebody as I'm unimportant in my theories!
Given the number of earth ponies in line for young Granny's zap apple jam *prior* to Ponyville's founding, it would suggest that there were a lot of local farms and small communities around, and together they likely would have had to do WWU as their usual tradition before farming season.
Once Ponyville was founded and unicorns and pegasi started living there, the WWU activities expanded (without magic, of course) to include helping the weather along, etc.
So WWU's has always been a Ponyville tradition, but it's a tradition of the entire region.
Also Applejack as a filly was looking at the mountain Canterlot sat on and beyond said mountains is Ponyville. So to the east is the sea and where the pilgrim ponies from Hearths Warming landed.
Manehatten used to be a farmers community before it evolved by industry.

The after story to Hearths Warming and when the settlers built Ponyville. Apparently apples were there first.

ReplyDeleteAnd yessss more bunny ponies!
No friendship report?
ReplyDeleteWhaaaa?
THIS, THIS MAY VERY WELL BE ONE OF MY FAVORITE EPISODES.
ReplyDeleteWow. This episode was fantastic.
ReplyDeleteIt was funny, well-paced, heartwarming and full of things the fandom will love to use I'm sure.
One of the best of the season, IMO.
I'm debating if i should watch it twice..
ReplyDeleteWHERE WAS DERPY?!?!?!?!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteCupcakes officially destroyed by canon.
ReplyDeleteThat was a good show
ReplyDeleteGreat history tale of ponyville. But, are there like no more friendship reports? I've yet to see any for awhile...
ReplyDeleteGranny Smith is now Soldier!
ReplyDeleteRetired of course.
Did you see that helemt in the flashback? Totally looked like Soldier's.
Aww that was cute! Good to see you're proud of granny Applebloom!
ReplyDeleteSo Diamond Tiara's special talent is confirmed as being a spoiled brat.
ReplyDeleteThat. Was. Incredible!
ReplyDeleteNo words can describe how fantastic this episode is. Just... wow
I've been blown so far away that I am in orbit right now
@Travis Smith
ReplyDeleteThese are TIMBER wolves... made of wood... magical wolves made of wood.

but who the heck was that random new grey colt hanging around?
Watching it again. And yeah, where was Derpy?
ReplyDeleteNo letter to Princess Celestia? OUR FIRST FILLER EPISODE! I did not see that coming.
ReplyDeleteNow the repeat will be spent on Derpy watch instead of focusing on all the foreground characters.
ReplyDeletecanon map, canon ponyville foundation, magic trees, diamond tiara's father, rainbow cupcakes, big mac dialogue, i guess that's enough for an episode.
ReplyDeleteAnother excellent episode. Quite enjoyable to see the back story of both Granny Smith and Ponyville. It was also funny to see all the fanon being destroyed. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteso did anyone catch derpy I could not find her
ReplyDeleteYes, no friendship report, because there was no lesson on friendship this episode. Instead, a lesson about family was learned.
ReplyDeleteAWESOME EPISODE!!!! I love it when they have history lessons!!
ReplyDelete...Now that I think about it, it's kinda sad that I am more interested in the history of Equestria than I am in the history of the real world.
Granny Smith's story was a epic and even provided a map
ReplyDeleteALL THE HISTORY EPISODES!!!!!
ReplyDeleteawesome:
ReplyDeletemore historical information
a map showing the location of Ponyville, Canterlot, Cloudsdale(!) and the Everfree Forest
very good, very good

I was like "eh, this episode is alright" then the last ten minutes happened. Awesome. Not going to be one of the best of season two, but it's a pretty good episode just for that part at the end. Also, the fan art practically draws itself.
ReplyDeleteWow that was great, loved the Ponyville back story.
ReplyDeleteBest Episode I ever seen.
ReplyDeleteAct 3 was awesome.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that the look of Granny Smith's dad was based on Michael Landon from "Little House on the Prairie".

Awww yeeeaaah backstory family episode! And new Everfree monster, Timber Wolves! So awesome!
ReplyDeleteAwesome to see a bit more of Celestia being integrated into episodes. Anypony spot Derpy anywhere?
ReplyDeleteThat episode is INCREDIBLE.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful all the way round. It might start a bit slow, but as soon as Granny Smith tells the story it's just...Wow. Manly tears guys, manly tears. Love the episode, more than I first expected.
Great work Cindy Morrow!
Ponyville was founded "hundreds of years ago" according to Winter Wrap-Up. Granny Smith was there before it was founded. Granny Smith is hundreds of years old.
ReplyDeleteTherefore, ponies live for centuries. Therefore, Equestria has only existed for a few generations.
PROVE ME WRONG!
Small bit of Historical fact, for the nation of Equestria :
ReplyDeletePonyville is less than 100years old (about 70-80, considering Granny Smith looked about 15-20 years old in the flashback).
Granny Smith has been taking sitting lessons from Lyra.
ReplyDeleteEPIC EPIC EPICNESS!!
ReplyDeleteI honestly didn't expect it to turn out that well. I expected more embarrassing crap and stuff like that, but that story was AMAZING! *voicecrack*
I always thought that the Apple Clan could trace their heritage back to the founding of Ponyville, I didn't expect Ponyville to turn out to be only a couple of generations old!
ReplyDeleteWell, Appaloosa was built in a few months, so it shouldn't come as a surprise for Ponyville to be so large yet still a young town.
AWESOME :DDDD
ReplyDeleteSomeone needs to get a screencap of that map.
ReplyDeleteIs it just me or did this episode actually feel LONGER then most?
ReplyDeleteSeriously, the pacing was perfect.
I really liked that ep!
ReplyDeleteThough you do realise Granny Smith is now canonically hundreds of years old, ref: Winter Wrap Up:
"Ponyville was started by earth ponies, so for hundreds of years they've never used magic to clean up winter"
beautiful episode! ^^ Started like being on lsd but ended out to be awesome :)
ReplyDeleteWelp. Time to watch it again
ReplyDeleteby the way...
ReplyDeletehow old is Granny Smith? She was older than Applebloom / about as old as the Mane Six during the founding of Ponyville and the town has grown quite a lot since then...
Ponies confirmed for living way longer than humans?
So nobody disliked the episode?
ReplyDeleteIt's a Hearth's Warming miracle!
Filthy Tiara? X)
ReplyDeleteLoved the episode. Glad there was no friendship report. Just means that they aren't forcing them in there. That and this was a lesson about family, not friendship. That flashback was amazing. Another job well done Studio B!
ReplyDelete@Don't call me Brony
ReplyDeleteI APPROVE OF THIS THEORY!
Princess Celestia said the letters don't have to be weekly. That lets the writers deviate a bit from that plot device.
ReplyDeleteawesome episode as always
ReplyDeleteThere hasn't been a new friendship report in months...'Tia's probably getting restless, I'll go check on her...
ReplyDeleteand again they destroyed fan lore :)
ReplyDeleteIncoming Pony/Bunny fanart tsunami.
ReplyDeleteThe Ponyville origin story was unexpected, but awesome.
ReplyDeleteBTW did any one spot Derpy?
Friggin' loved this episode, though if Apple Bloom is a dictionary, that means that Apple Bloom is Sweetie Belle.
ReplyDeletePARADOX IMMINENT.
New meme prediction:
ReplyDeleteBunny!ponies
Granny's dad/Celestia hoof shipping
Diamond Tiara with rabbit ears
Applebloom with bonnet
Diamond Tiara's father?
ReplyDeleteIncoming Past Sins revision!
Great episode, I lol'd so hard at Trollestia, as she showed them the place they could live. She just didn't wanted such folk in Canterlot xD
ReplyDeleteWow. Diamond Tiara's father seems like a halfway decent pony. Silver Spoon being the first to applaud was a nice touch. Plus, does anybody think young Granny Smith looks really pretty?
ReplyDeleteFilthy Rich's business is the Wal-Mart of Ponyville.
ReplyDeleteThat episode was just awesome. The humour, the story, the way it was delivered was just wonderful. Plus the Timberwolves looked badass.
ReplyDeletei just saw scootaloo get a wingboner in class
ReplyDeleteI hear by dub the little grey colt, Chubby Cheeks!
ReplyDeleteThird Doctor Pony in Flashback!
ReplyDeleteTime-Travel is Canon!
Anyone else notice the possible TF2 refrence? or am I seeing things?
ReplyDeleteAlso that was one of the best if the best episode of the series to date /)^.^(\
Oh please, Applebloom. At least you have someone to share. The same can't be said for Scoots.

ReplyDeleteHuh... I was pretty skeptical at first, but that was a good episode.
ReplyDelete@fenril
ReplyDeleteScootaloo almost always has a wingboner, that was just an average Monday for her.
Great episode! :)
ReplyDeleteRender time! :D
So basically without Granny Smith and the Apple family, there would be no Ponyville.
ReplyDeleteOh, and this ep was simply fantastic. I hoped we'd get to see a young Granny Smith and I was not disappointed. In fact, it's clear Granny Smith is best pony of her generation.

ReplyDelete@Blueshift
ReplyDeleteMaybe the magic of the Zap Apples is what kept Granny alive so long.
@Blueshift
ReplyDeleteHmm.... you're right. There is a big hole there.

@Token T
ReplyDeleteOr drinking the blood of fillies!
Quick canon fix for Winter Wrap Up - maybe there was an Old Ponyville and New Ponyville?
@XyroTR1 Hope you feel better soon :D
ReplyDeleteGranny Smith flashback highlighted how Celestia doesn't age.
ReplyDeleteAnd even back then ponies all knew to kiss Celestia's.......flank.
ReplyDeleteI went into this episode hoping for one thing: Some backstory for the Apple family. Not only did I get that but I got electrified apples, probably the single greatest idea for a fruit since the Devil Fruit from One Piece. So overall, I enjoyed it.

ReplyDeleteSoldier Granny Smith propaganda posters! GO!
ReplyDeleteAnd on another note. DAT BUNNY-EARS SCOOTALOO :> D'awwwed out loud.
ReplyDelete@fenril
ReplyDeletePuberty.
Claire hath hit it.
This episode: Granny Smith helped found Ponyville.
ReplyDeleteWinter Wrap Up: Twilight: "Ponyville was started by Earth Ponies, so for HUNDREDS OF YEARS they've never used magic to clean up winter."
So unless that was an exaggeration, Granny Smith is hundreds of years old.
@AgentG
ReplyDeleteOf course young Granny was pretty. Are there any UNpretty women in the Apple family. I mean, just rewatch the first episode.
@Don't Call Me Brony (Please)
ReplyDeleteClearly then that statement is retconed by the canon.
One could easily construe it as being made out of ignorance I suppose.
@fenril
ReplyDeleteThey all sound older, Scootaloo is particlarly notable. In-universe, it means the characters are ageing, in real life, it means the actors are ageing.
The clubhouse now has an upper level, looks like Apple Bloom has been busy.
ReplyDeleteI JUST noticed that Applejack was frozen in time in my post. Apparently my upload killed the GIF. Fixed that!

ReplyDelete"Magic is what magic does"--Granny Smith
ReplyDelete"Stupid is what stupid does"--Forest Gump
Filly Smith is adorable.
Timber wolves. Yes.
Celestia not aging canon.
Back story of Ponyville.
This episode was simply amazing.
Ponies confirmed for living hundreds of years.
ReplyDeleteI think Cheerilee just jumped up in my list of best ponies because of this episode too.
ReplyDelete@Rinzuul
ReplyDeleteCelestia not aging has been canon since the first episode. No?
"Ponyville was started by earth ponies, so for hundreds of years they've never used magic to clean up winter"
ReplyDeleteThere's a semantic problem in this sentence.
@Mr. Merritt
ReplyDeleteHe isn't. He's her great grandfather.
Maybe it's the fact that I'm not 100% focused on this episode, but I'll be opted to say it isn't my Top fav. It's a good episode, don't get me wrong, it's just not Top 3. Maybe Top 5 or 6.
ReplyDeleteTime to list what I liked and didn't like.
ReplyDeleteLiked:
- Big Mac finally says some things besides Eeyup and Nope, even if they were only short phrases.
- A young Granny Smith.
- Granny Smith's antics were pretty entertaining, although it seems to contradict other episodes where she can barely move. (I predict Meet The Soldier parodies within an hour.)
- Zap Apples. Suddenly Applejack's job just got a whole lot cooler.
- Timber Wolves. I'm always up for new monsters in Equestria. Shame they had such little camera time.
- Apple Bloom in a bunny suit. D'AWWWWWW
- Ponyville Backstory. Hell. Yes.
Didn't Like:
- No letter to Princess Celestia, not even the implication that it was already written or will be written later?
@Jimperator
ReplyDeleteYeah, Nightmare Moon/Luna was in the moon for a thousand years!
Weekend at Bernie's?!
ReplyDeleteReally now, Studio B?
@XyroTR1
ReplyDeleteSending all of my possitive energy towards you!
Hope you are feeling better dude.
- Second episode not to feature Twilight Sparkle.
ReplyDelete- First episode to feature precisely ONE member of the mane cast, if I'm not mistaken!
@D. Shadows
ReplyDeleteGood break-down. That seems the most logical analysis of that sentence really.
Diamond Tiara, once again, is worst pony.
ReplyDeleteIf motivation is sure to make Zap Apple Jam then you must motivate!
ReplyDeleteGranny Smith said that, and she knows a little bit more about Zap Apple Jam then you do pal, because she INVENTED IT!
AND THEN PERFECTED IT SO THAT NO PONY COULD BEST HER IN THE ART OF ZAP APPLE JAM.
Then, with her Zap Apple Jam, she made two jars per crate, then sold those crates, and build Ponyville out of the crap-load of money!
@Zumikaku
ReplyDeleteHow about, "for hundreds of years EARTH PONIES have never used magic to clean up winter", meaning other Earth Pony villages eschew magic as well.

ReplyDelete@Spikely Whiplash
ReplyDelete"- More of Diamond Tiara being a bitch just for the sake of being a bitch.
ReplyDeleteAlso.. Weekend at Bernies? Wtf?!
Well, you can't have favorite episodes without having least favorites. Now, before anypony jumps all over me, allow me to explain.
ReplyDeleteI would be a dirty, dirty liar if I said that this was a bad episode and I didn't enjoy it.
There's always one...
ReplyDelete@PewnyPL
ReplyDeleteWas it inspired directly by this episode? Or was it drawn sometime before this episode aired?
I just realized... They were singing the ABC Song. So, they speak English, but don't write in English?
ReplyDeleteNo derpy :(
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to say my headcannon believes that Granny Smith is 75-80 years old otherwise she would be AJ's great, great, great, great etc. grandma. Going with this replaces anything that may have been said in WWU.

@Don't Call Me Brony (Please)
ReplyDeleteThe Alphabet we English speakers use is the Latin Alphabet. the most widely used in the world. ;P
@Don't Call me Brony (please)
ReplyDeleteAlso, in one episode (I forget which) We actually see Spike sign his name and although simplified, you can clearly make out english letters.
ReplyDeleteDid anyone else notice that there weren't any Pegasi in Canterlot in the flashback scene (except for the Royal Guards)? Seeing how Canterlot was (and still is) mainly populated by Unicorns, and Celestia even placing the Earth Pony Settlers outside of Canterlot...
ReplyDeleteDifferences between the different Pony Races still seem to play a noticeable role in Equestrian society; even after the Hearth's Warming events...
I understand that Granny Smith is named after the apple, but I have to wonder what it must have been like for her as a young filly being called 'Granny'... The apple family is silly. I think that's why they make up the majority of my favorite characters.
ReplyDelete@Blueshift
ReplyDeleteHuh... no ?
As we can *logically* deduce from THIS episode : @Nova25
And, ''they'' kinda relates to ''Earth ponies'', like those who founded Ponyville but not restricted to Ponyville-only...
After all, it's in the 'Earth Pony way' to not use magic, when doing something.
@Don't Call Me Brony (Please)
ReplyDeleteThe Hearts Warming Eve episode talked about the founding of Equestria the country not Ponyville the town.

ReplyDeleteSomeone go back over this episode frame by frame there were two scenes where I though I saw something added in the background.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to describe the two moments but I believe something was off in the animation for a split second of time.
Welp, prepare for funked up pics of scootaloo eating "Rainbow Jelly".
ReplyDeleteWe're with you, try to not work so hard, and rest.
ReplyDeleteAmazing episode! Who would have thought, that it ended up being a history episode? :D
ReplyDeleteDidn't spot Derpy, though. Guess the 1080p YT version will show.
@PewnyPL
ReplyDeleteSo, apparently the first fanart for the episode was pony porn?
Oy vey.
Ah well, thankfully that stuff's easy to ignore.
There's very little you can do with Diamond Tiara. Once you hit that stage then there's few places you can go and still root for the character.
ReplyDeleteI suppose her father could cut her off while Silver Spoon is vacationing in Prance.
ReplyDelete@Rickadai
ReplyDelete"No, Spike, Ponyville was started by Earth Ponies, so for hundreds of years they've never used magic to clean up winter."
(Winter Wrap-Up, approx 40 secs from start)
Sorry, no. She clearly says that Ponyville was started hundreds of years ago. What we have here is an example of bad script editing. They have now canonically stated that Granny Smith is hundreds of years old.
I want memes of:
ReplyDelete1. That funny looking chubby pony
2. Epic congratulatory scenes from movies with old Granny Smith's face faded in the background
3. Sweetie Bell's Evil Face (from Granny inspecting Apple Bloom's thermometer)
4. REJECTED/DENIED when Sweetie Belle bucks a Zap Apple Tree
Tree puns about "Timberwolves"
@Travis Smith
ReplyDeleteWolfs were already canon since "Luna eclipsed". Look at Scoot's costume for proof.
I'm guessing Derpy was in the background of a crowd scene, maybe in old timey Canterlot, or in the line to buy the Zap Apples.
ReplyDelete@Vulcan539
ReplyDeleteThank you for not jumping all over me for a differing opinion, first of all.
I just would like to correct one thing, however. I did like the episode. There hasn't been an episode, from Season 1 OR 2, that I have outright disliked.
Celestia banish me when I start disliking episodes...
@Somber
ReplyDeleteThat's... actually pretty good. Nice job.
ReplyDeleteWhich means she de-ponifies them, they're not exactly 'people' so much in her mind.
Oddly enough... Twilight's comment in Winter Wrap up and Granny's story... were both written by the same writer Cindy Morrow. So... um... ask her?
ReplyDeleteHuh Epic Cupcake time got it right on the jelly...
ReplyDelete@Princess Luna
ReplyDeleteOh of course, I know that. I was just being a smartass. You're right we have added letters, the original latin Alphabet went something like:
A B C D E F G H I K L M N O P Q R S T V X Y Z
@D. Shadows
ReplyDeleteIt was most certainly 'He Who Waits in Silence'.
ReplyDeleteIts probably a pre-heart warming tradition too considering.
@Party Pony @Silfir
ReplyDeleteReally guys, calling Trollestia? She was kind and benevolent. If you want to accuse any of the forms, you could say Molestia only for Granny Smith's dad kissing her hoof, and that's even a stretch.
@Don't Call Me Brony (Please) "Welcome, Princess Celest!"
ReplyDeleteCan't say I found the episode that engaging.
ReplyDeletePredictable is fine, but there seemed to be some missed opportunities for character development along the way.
ReplyDeleteThat map doesn't make sense.
ReplyDeleteHundreds of years Earth Ponies cleared winter by hoof before Ponyville.
Looking at the map:
ReplyDeleteIs Cloudscale confirmed to be further north then Canterlot or is it just up in the air in the vicinity of Ponyville...?
By cartography's standards, the former should take precedent. But who knows!
Given the number of earth ponies in line for young Granny's zap apple jam *prior* to Ponyville's founding, it would suggest that there were a lot of local farms and small communities around, and together they likely would have had to do WWU as their usual tradition before farming season.
ReplyDeleteOnce Ponyville was founded and unicorns and pegasi started living there, the WWU activities expanded (without magic, of course) to include helping the weather along, etc.
So WWU's has always been a Ponyville tradition, but it's a tradition of the entire region.
@IkkouSoryu
ReplyDeleteClearly it's not a distance-accurate map. Just a general-locations sort.
Also Applejack as a filly was looking at the mountain Canterlot sat on and beyond said mountains is Ponyville. So to the east is the sea and where the pilgrim ponies from Hearths Warming landed.
ReplyDeleteManehatten used to be a farmers community before it evolved by industry.
@Questionmarktarius Hell yeah! Loved that bit. Especially when she was awake and still connected to the ropes.
ReplyDelete31 minutes left on the render! :D
ReplyDeleteFor now, enjoy some 480p.
(PS: Seth you're supposed to be on vacation!! Get!~) :p
