That aside, I really enjoyed this one. It wasn't as awesome as the last 4 but more than makes up for it with the heartwarming feel of it. The picture alone made me Dawww. Honestly wasn't expecting to see their parents, and was quite surprised by how so easy going they are. Sweetie Belle may not be a good cook but you have to admit that it takes skill to not only create molten toast but burn juice.
I liked the other teams for the event and Dinky having a sister was a surprise and will make good fodder for plenty of fanfics as should the others. my one complaint was I had to catch the last minutes of the new Strawberry Shortcake, which surprisingly ended on a cliffhanger(I think) a stupid one but still one(I think).
Prior to watching this episode, I had a huge argument/non-literal fight with my father over something that caused us to blow up at each other.

After watching this episode, I am considering it. This is the power of MLP. A lesson comes along about family, and it legitimately starts to creep into my mind that maybe I should follow the general moral it has about family.
I can't think of any other show that does this, or would make me care about a family fight I had a week ago.
I totally didn't notice either, which I'm really glad about. I noticed something different with 'Applejack's' eyes, but it just didn't register at all.
And then watching it again it's sort of mind-blowing watching her doing all this physical stuff and knowing it's Rarity.
I don't know what's happened to me where the sight of an elegant cartoon pony scarfing down a whole pie is like Inception to me, but I think I'm okay with it.
Finally got a chance to see it over waffles this morning. That was a good one <3 . I could identify with Sweetie Belle not really knowing how to do things right for someone else and getting frustrated with it. The whole race (esp. Granny :D ) was great, and the letter bit capped it off nicely.
Yep, I was ready for something like this after all the madcap zaniness of Discord, Twilight Crazy, and LUNA MAYS ^^.
Rarity's parents = mind blown. How the hell they turned out a daughter like her, I will never know.
Really liked the episode though. I have three younger sisters and there were many a times my head nearly exploded like Rarity's due to sibling interference.
Unknown to Sweetie Belle, was the fact that AJ and AB had to beg the Aloe sisters to let them borrow an entire shipment of the spa's mud to use for the mud pit. It was the only way Rarity would go near it. The mud cake ket all the "farm dirt" off her pristine coat.
I've seen a few people wondering how Applejack was able to hold her breath in the mud for almost the entire length of the race. The answer's simple: Earth pony magic. ;)
@Tears of a Valedictorian: Wild Mass Guessing time!
Rarity has a secret Soarin-esque affinity for pie. She just represses such impulses to scarf them down in public in order to maintain her image. Her image is in part an affectation to distance herself from what she considers the embarassing behavior of her parents. Because she was effectively anonymous during the race, she felt free to cut loose and give in to her love for pie.
Now somepony take this and write a Soarin x Pie x Rarity fic where Rarity and Soarin are each trying to ninja a pie at a party.

Rarity's dad reminds me of Mike Ditka. He kinda has that Chicago accent going on. Besides that, he's really ready for that vacation with that straw hat & flower-print shirt.
Rarity's and Sweetie Belle's parents are EXACTLY what I've always imagined them to be. Rarity has NO official standing in high society. She has had to WORK HARD to achieve any recognition at all, and as far back as episode one, she goes head over hocks EXCLAIMING to Twilight how envious she is of the glamour and sophistication... that she has always DREAMED of living there.
High society is her dream, and for it to be a dream, it must be something she hasn't had, and attains to reach someday.
Down to earth, common folk, no sense of high society parents is exactly what I always believed she came from. Sweetie Belle is too... regular... to be from high society. She's a plain little filly who is utterly adawwwwable, and does not share Rarity's "particular" inclinations.
In all likely hood, her parents probably popped the kids into a carriage one day for a vacation, and Rarity got her first glimpse, from afar, of that glamour and sophistication... That thing just out of the reach of her little filly hooves, her commoner hooves.
I imagine she would have read every fashion magazine, looked at every book on high society, studied the concepts of color and form, learned her art of sewing, even taught herself her pseudo high society speaking style, trying her hardest to emulate that which she idolizes.
As she grew, and began her business, her high society shell would tend to make her shop seem overtly sophisticated, at least compared to the country shops and stands of Ponyville. Of course, her talents are truly and surely founded in an honest skill and ability that makes her truly worth her works of textile art. The added touch of her fine gem enhanced works makes her even more of a rarity (lololol) and likely got some base attention. it also helps that Ponyville is so close to Canterlot.
Eventually, with the major events focusing on the small town... and attentions turned it's way, after the events of The Summer Sun Celebration, Nightmare Moon's return, the freeing of Princess Luna, and the fact that Princess Celestia herself now has a strongly vested interest in the quaint village, now that her personal student and the other bearers of the Elements of Harmony now reside there... More and more ponies would take notice of the town. More and more ponies would have the chance to notice the polished gem shining in the mass of common ponies. Hoity Toity, Photo Finish, Sapphire Shores, all came to the small town for various reasons, but ultimately, I imagine that the year that passed during season 1 was truly Rarity's greatest commercial and social year of her life. It's the year that truly and assuredly made her.
Looks like season 2 will bring her new found fame to light, and focus an episode on what she truly desires.
And it all breaks down to one simple fact...
Rarity is just trying to break out the the shell of a normal family, with nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing fantastic, special, glamourous, or high society about them... They are just a simple, everyday, average, loving family of WAY TOO NORMAL ponies.
^ Derped... First paragraph refers to the scene in episode 1 where Rarity is making over Twilight and they go tumbling after Rarity releases the corset when Twilight mentions she was from Canterlot. I only now realized I never actually SAID Canterlot anywhere in the paragraph, though most any fan will understand anyway.
@Salculd Yes, a the text of a Pinkie Pie report could be very... interesting. Yeah... and I am 99.99% sure that Celestia would actually have the transcendent insight necessary to actually understand what it meant.
My favorite head cannon for Rainbow Dash's parents is a somewhat short fanfic someone wrote about Rainbow Dash's father returning from Neighpon (aka Japan)... and it turns out to be a ponyfied George Takai, classic "Ohhh Mmy" and all!
It embarrasses her to no end that he very openly expresses his thoughts regarding his hope for her to find a lovely mare...
Poor Dash.. Even her pops is trying to ship her with mares!
Ah hahaha. That sounds hilarious. I've always personally considered it peculiar that RD's sexuality is such a contentions subject considering 90% of all FiM shipping is fillyfoolery anyway.
I think in that story, it's implied that Dash is totally straight, and mortified by her father's behavior, though Pinkie Pie... Well, she's just Pinkie.
The first story... Ohhhh mmmy, it was simply HI-LAR-I-OUS! Second story... is short, sad, and utterly tragic. Same author for both, RoyGBiv
As for the shipping... I tend to be tolerant to a lot of it. It's usually cute, but can lead to disturbing. It's all fictional pastel ponies, so whatevs.
The iTunes clean rip is up, and has been for a day at least.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd9FbFGOO64
This has no logos, ratings, ads, or commercials. It's as clean as you can possibly get. It's 720p, because that's as high a resolution as iTunes goes, AFAIK.
There is a download link for a 416MB very high quality, high bitrate version. I used ClipNabber to download the youtube file, which clocks in at 211MB, incase you are inclined to save some space at the expense of some bitrate.
Also...
Keep whining to Hasbro AND RETAILERS that you want a BluRay MLP:FiM box set, if you truly want 1080p with no clutter. I preordered the 5 episode FiM DVD that popped up on Amazon, but I wrote in the discussion forum that if a BluRay pops up, that's what I REALLY want, and that I'd prefer to buy that instead. You can't forget retailers. They need to also know you have an interest in a product. Everyone yells at hasbro for pink Celestia, but far too often, it's because Toys-R-Us said they'd order triple if they make it pink... You know, to appeal to the little girls. You gotta yell at retailers too.
I think this episode has made me like Rarity more. The guilt trip and her overcoming her usual aversion to dirt for her sister's sake has bumped up my opinion of her a notch.
For some reason, I find myself suspicious of the possibility that Rarity and Sweetie's parents are rather neglectful. Still, we do seem to have some confirmation that Rarity's accent is not her natural one, but rather one she's cultivated over the years.
Certainly one of the better episodes, although I liked Luna Eclipsed and the Return Of Harmony better.
Seems pretty apparent that by the end of season 2, all of the mane 6 will have individually written at least 1 letter to Princess Celestia. This episode was Rarity's turn, looks like possibly AJ, then Dashie is up next.
I don't think this episode made me like Rarity all that much more, but it did make me like Sweetie Belle alot more.
Out of the 3 CMCs, I always pegged Sweetie Belle as the "girlie girl" of the group, ie. less apt than the other two to do athletic stuff, like run an obstacle course. So it was nice to see that proven wrong for me...
lack of Scootaloo in this episode makes me hope that the upcoming episodes, there is alot more of her, like especially more interaction between Scoots and Dashie. I would love to see Scootaloo basically become Dashie's unoffical little sis =)
Actually I was more referring to the fact that people freak out when Dash is portrayed as gay when every single other character has also been portrayed as gay. Except maybe Dr. Whoof. I haven't seen a gay Dr. Whoof yet, I don't think.
Anyway I'd been meaning to check those 2 fics out for a while now. Both a little over the top but not bad at all.
I personally have no real opinion on "race" as it were. Considering that all the ponies share the same culture, I just consider them the same indiscriminate race.
I stand by my "Dash has wealthy parents" theory though.
I'm well aware that almost everypony has been shipped with everypony. A lot of it is weird to me. Some of it's cute. I'm divided on FlutterMac, TwiMac, and LunaMac! LOL! Mac can be shipped with almost anypony successfully! :)
I am quite supportive of TwiLuna friendshipping, which can be just as beautiful as full on shipping.
I particularly support Rainbow Dash and Soarin (SoarDash is just about the most corruptible ship name! LOL), though Soarin and Applejack is cute too. Now DAT's some apple pie!
I'm not exactly sure when race popped into your mind? Quite frankly, I'm quite confused.
Clearly there are Unicorn, Pegasus, Earth, and Alicorn ponies. I view them each as being 4 different races, all belonging to the same species, and have never considered any genetic incompatibility between them. I view Alicorn as being, besides something of an extreme rarity, possibly a magically induced amalgamation of all three races. I tend to subscribe to the philosophy that as all 3 common races of pony are in fact one species, that a pony may be ascended to the form of Alicorn if nature or royalty calls upon them for that duty. That's my head fanon. I have never considered Celestia or Luna to be gods, just simply the most powerful ponies in existence, with the gravest and most serious responsibilities of any pony in existence. I believe them to be magically empowered into their positions, likely by the previous generation of royalty. My favorite fanfics regarding Alicorn origins are Paradise and Celestia's Notebook. Paradise follows the idea of natural ascension to their place of power, by as yet unseen powers of nature or something unknown. Celestia's Notebook takes the different path of a racially divided society that has unicorns dominating, and Celestia, Luna, and another pony represent each of the races. Luna is a unicorn, Celestia is a pegasus, and the third pony is an earth pony. Though advanced scientific and magical research, they find a way to share their racial elements between one another, using the Earth, Moon, and Sun as magical anchor points to stabilize the spell... and then oops... Manure gets REAL!!!
Sadly, both are works in progress... and I want updates. SN updates once every week or two it seems. Paradise... MUCH SLOWER. but worth the wait.
I am more uncertain in regards to Zebra. In reality, they are different species, but close enough to interbreed with horses. I more or less follow the same reality based canon in this scenario as well. Zebra are a different species than pony, but are so similar as to be genetically compatible. Buffalo, I view as definitely a separate species. Most notable difference... No cutiemarks. They are far too different to be anything less than another full and separate species.
Still no idea where race got pulled into the discussion, but that's the way I see it, I guess.
Thought I'd add my 2 bits.
I'm equal opportunity though! I love everypony! no matter what kind! :)
I'd say that Rainbow gets the most attention JUST BECAUSE her hair is practically a waving gay pride flag.
gay people latched onto her, and it almost seems like the shock statement now to straight ship her. I'll always support the straight ships, to be honest.
Stuff like CarmelMac squicks me out too much to be able to read. I just can't get into it. I just avoid those things, cause I don't care for it. Not gonna go and pick a fight with those who do though.
I'm not gonna say nothing against the f/f shipping. Some of it's just weird, some of it, I ignore. Some of it is genuinely cute. I prefer the friendshipping over all out shipping. For one, it's clean. Second, it can be cute, and 100% innocent. Third... Shipping can be OK too, as long as it's done tastefully.
Rainbow is simply a magnet for discussion because of her hair. You really can't break it down any further than that. The earliest fanon declarations about Rainbow began with that basic, observation. Now people know Rainbow well enough to look passed the hair,a s she's a well fleshed out, well developed character who we all like. Now, it's easier to miss the obvious details, and forget the origins of people's opinions or assumptions.
First off, their parents, whoa! They definitely came from out of no where, and I never expected to see them! I do enjoy hearing their Canadian/Midwest accent, but it does kind of come off as the staff grabbing folks off the street. Just a minor quip. Anyone else think Sweetie Bell took cooking lessons from either Homer Simpson or Squidward?
I have to admit, seeing Rarity and Sweetie Bell interact, boy does that hit close to the familiar. I might have only a younger brother (and I'm a man as well), but not one of those situations presented have I not experienced on both sides of the fence. Clearly the writers know of the sibling dynamic, and for that I applaud them for presenting it in such a clean and clear manor.
Fast-forward to the race, and this is about my only major quip. There were a couple of animation errors on some of the background ponies, like as the participants are walking to the starting line of the race, one pony is seen with derp eyes, and it isn't Derpy Hooves. Speaking of Derpy Hooves, in one scene on the audience shot during the race, I swear she was animated without derp eyes. It's very hard to tell because of where she is and the camera's angle, but to me, it almost looks like she has normal eyes.
What a twist ending! When I saw it, I threw myself back a bit and said "Whoa!" Realizing Rarity did all those things was quite a site. She's a lot more competitive then she thinks, and I love seeing it (It. Is. On!) I caught the color change in the eyes (AJ's are green, Rarity's are blue) but I shrugged it off because I just wanted to see how it ended.
Over all, I'm very happy with this episode. It definitely feels more like a usual episode, and personally, that's all I really wanted this week. The sibling dynamic was handled expertly, clearly someone on the writing staff had a sibling or two and those experiences transcend perfectly. The twist ending was a fantastic surprise and something I really love about this show. I figured Rarity to enter the race, or to do something conspicuous for Sweetie Bell. For her to do everything she, and AJ and AB to a lesser extent, did was absolutely a blast to watch. Easily a great episode and a great Rarity and Sweetie Bell episode.
@Everlasting Joy Actually, Derpy's been shown more than once without her eyes being derped, most recently in the closing scene of 'The Return of Harmony, Part 2'.
@richfiles I think that's part of it; also, for me at least, there's the fact that some of the 'Dash is a lesbian' proponents use her tomboyism to support their theory. That's the main reason I find lesbian Dash shipping annoying, while most other couples I can just shrug off; I think it's insulting to imply that being a tomboy automatically makes it likely, if not certain, that a woman is a lesbian as well. (I realize not everyone uses Rainbow Dash's tomboyism to support portraying her as a lesbian; to those fans, thanks for not dragging up that cliche.)
I also overwhelmingly support friendshipping over romantic shipping, mainly for two reasons. One, I feel setting up romantic relationships, especially involving non-background ponies, is contrary to the spirit of the show, which is about friendship. Two, I feel the media is over-saturated with romance as it is, the vast majority of it superficial or even demeaning; it just disappoints me to take a show that's a great vehicle for promoting the worth of friendship, and start making romantic entanglements a large part of the fandom.
"I'm not exactly sure when race popped into your mind? Quite frankly, I'm quite confused."
That would be my fault. I confused a comment here with a comment on the fic thread. Japanese Dash and all.
"I'd say that Rainbow gets the most attention JUST BECAUSE her hair is practically a waving gay pride flag."
Oh I get why people assume Dash is gay. Then again. Just because the LGBT community uses the rainbow as it's symbol doesn't mean that rainbow = gay. Rainbows are meteorological events. I see Dash as the living embodiment of the sky.
I honestly have no problem with any fannon portrayal of Dash's sexuality, personally. I just find the fanrage that happens when Dash gets portrayed as gay ridiculous when every other character does too.
As far as shipping? I don't have a personal "OTP". How much I enjoy a ship tends to be based on how much I like the characters involved.
Also I am not especially interested in "romance" type stories. If it has only a [Shipping] tag I will probably not read it unless it comes HIGHLY recommended. Throw an [Adventure] or [Comedy], etc tag up there with [Shipping] tho and I'm all over that.
So you don't mind Dash lesbian shipping, you mind people implying canon Dash is a lesbian due to her personality? Kind of redundant considering that any implications made about a cannon character without direct proof are just fannon anyway. And anyone ignorant enough to believe that tomboy=lesbian aren't worth arguing with anyway.
Personally I think the main reason Dash is implied to be gay is not her mane or tomboyism. It's Gilda.
@DPV111 Pretty much; I don't care for most shipping, really, but on the other hand most of it doesn't bother me either.
As for the main reason Rainbow Dash is so often portrayed as gay, I think it's rather basic: the main cast and most of the popular supporting characters are all female. ;)
I do think some people see Dash as a lesbian because of her relationship with Gilda (and more see Gilda that way because of that relationship), but I've also seen people explicitly say in comments that Rainbow Dash must be a lesbian on the show because she's a tomboy with a rainbow mane. That's the sort of thing that rankles me, but as you say, there's no arguing with such people.

I'm OK with this!! ⟠
So much win! ☺ ⟠⟠
☺

ReplyDeleteRegarding the sadness of an only child: Well, they have mentoring programs and such... not sure if it helps.
@richfiles
ReplyDeleteSweet headcannon.
Wanna know mine?
I think Rainbow Dash's parents are filthy rich.
The signs are all there.
@Salculd
ReplyDeleteYes, a the text of a Pinkie Pie report could be very... interesting. Yeah... and I am 99.99% sure that Celestia would actually have the transcendent insight necessary to actually understand what it meant.
@manedhel
ReplyDeleteThis episode made me fall in love with the series all over again, Brohoofs to anyone that agrees
Nice! ^^

ReplyDeleteWeak.

ReplyDeleteA parasprite! Somepony get a tuba quick!

ReplyDeleteYou do realize your whining makes you look impotent. But hey continue to rage at our existence. It amuses every last one of us to no end.
@DPV111
ReplyDeleteMy favorite head cannon for Rainbow Dash's parents is a somewhat short fanfic someone wrote about Rainbow Dash's father returning from Neighpon (aka Japan)... and it turns out to be a ponyfied George Takai, classic "Ohhh Mmy" and all!
It embarrasses her to no end that he very openly expresses his thoughts regarding his hope for her to find a lovely mare...
Poor Dash.. Even her pops is trying to ship her with mares!
@richfiles
ReplyDeleteAh hahaha. That sounds hilarious.
I've always personally considered it peculiar that RD's sexuality is such a contentions subject considering 90% of all FiM shipping is fillyfoolery anyway.
@DPV111
ReplyDeleteI think in that story, it's implied that Dash is totally straight, and mortified by her father's behavior, though Pinkie Pie... Well, she's just Pinkie.
Link below is a same author two-fer-one.
http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/09/stories-rainbow-dashs-family.html
The first story... Ohhhh mmmy, it was simply HI-LAR-I-OUS!
Second story... is short, sad, and utterly tragic.
Same author for both, RoyGBiv
As for the shipping... I tend to be tolerant to a lot of it. It's usually cute, but can lead to disturbing. It's all fictional pastel ponies, so whatevs.
IT'S UP!!!
ReplyDeleteThe iTunes clean rip is up, and has been for a day at least.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd9FbFGOO64
Anyhow, enjoy!
I think this episode has made me like Rarity more. The guilt trip and her overcoming her usual aversion to dirt for her sister's sake has bumped up my opinion of her a notch.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason, I find myself suspicious of the possibility that Rarity and Sweetie's parents are rather neglectful.
ReplyDeleteI don't think this episode made me like Rarity all that much more, but it did make me like Sweetie Belle alot more.
@richfiles
ReplyDeleteActually I was more referring to the fact that people freak out when Dash is portrayed as gay when every single other character has also been portrayed as gay.
@DPV111
ReplyDeleteI'm well aware that almost everypony has been shipped with everypony.
ReplyDeletegay people latched onto her, and it almost seems like the shock statement now to straight ship her.
(\_(^É›^)_/)
I have high regards for this episode.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, their parents, whoa!
Watch it.
@Everlasting Joy
ReplyDeleteActually, Derpy's been shown more than once without her eyes being derped, most recently in the closing scene of 'The Return of Harmony, Part 2'.
@richfiles
I think that's part of it; also, for me at least, there's the fact that some of the 'Dash is a lesbian' proponents use her tomboyism to support their theory.
@jodyjm13
ReplyDeleteHuh, you don't say. I know she's been shown non-derped in early episodes, but that was before becoming canon. Thanks for the tip.
@richfiles
ReplyDelete"I'm not exactly sure when race popped into your mind?
@jodyjm13
It's Gilda.
@DPV111
ReplyDeleteDash has rich parents?
Hmm... Never thought of that, but now that I do...
ZOMG YOU ARE SO RITE!
Dinky had el googly eyes.
ReplyDeleteTHEREFORE
Dinky is Derpy's RELATIVE.
I'd prefer daughter.
Who is to say that the pony that Dinky is with isn't some kind of adoptive sister? Or just doing it with Dinky as a friend.
Like, say how AJ was gonna do the social with Sweetie Belle as a friend?
Parasprites hitting the videos again...
ReplyDelete@DPV111
ReplyDeletePretty much; I don't care for most shipping, really, but on the other hand most of it doesn't bother me either.
