Recall that Celly was handling both Sun and Moon for all of Nightmare Moon's imprisonment, and I imagine Luna probably didn't feel up to the task immediately after getting her Dark Side blasted into oblivion by the Death Rainbow of Friendship. Plus we don't know precisely how long, or in what order, the events of S1 took. Celestia may have raised the Moon that night.

That said, I believe this is probably a permanent change indicating Luna regaining her power and reassuming her responsibilities. Or a change in hair care. In either case, I expect both Luna and Celestia to have wavy manes day and night.

On the she's gotten bigger comments, not really seeing it in this shot.

Luna, has always been taller then the other ponies but not Celestia sized. I'll have to rewatch S1:Ep2 with the party scene but I'm sure she's always been that tall in comparison.

Yeah, all that's changed is her hair (and even then the curl in front of her face is still there) and her palette. She hasn't physically grown any and probably never will, since she's visually distinct as-is and the animators have enough work without having to redo a finished character.

Actually, if you look closely at the bangs under her hood, they match the bangs in the pic. So Luna probably hid her hair under the hood, and thats why she's wearing it. She probably wanted to meet the ponies first before they see her Nightmare Moon hair.

I'm really looking forward to when the episode airs. What I'm kinda not looking forward to is all the possible complaining and arguments and such it'll inevitably cause. You know it'll happen. I can already see it happening. lol

me thinks Luna's mane change was to make cheaper easier hair for toys. maybe now all those clear see through luna's they released will look more show accurate.

I mean that or maybe Luna changes her mane on purpose to look more like NMM so ponies would get used to her and see she isn't really scary if you assume any of those stills they showed with Luna in that cloak are to be trusted.

Rainbow Dash's Shadowbolt costume is PERFECT. It'd be pretty obscure, though... Assuming the Shadowbolts were invented by Nightmare Moon, Rainbow Dash is the only one who got a clear look at them. The rest of the mane 6 caught a glimpse before the fog closed over the bridge, but they were pretty far away. It'll certainly be interesting to see if Luna has any reaction to the costume...

Well, they were just little things. Some quotes and scenes that took place in fic.
For example when Discord held Twilight and told her that Ponyville will be new capital of the world or the scene with failed element's spell. There was something in 3rd episode but I forgot. Derp.

Another thing: The Hub's comment on Twilight's costume picture says she's dressed as Star Swirl. Google tells me Star Swirl is a pony from a previous generation. New canon G4 character?

...though they also say Rainbow Dash is dressed as a Wonderbolt, so I'm not sure how much we can take their word for it.

But seriously, I REALLY LIKE HER MANE!!!1!1, it was way better than the '60s looking azure one that she had before;I hope they keep the pale colour though, it would look way cooler. (It will be the "mane event", so to speak)

I hope they went back to the original theme song though. The animation can stay, but the theme song has to go back to the original recording (in all its guitar glory)

So, Spike gets grief for dressing as an older version of himself, but Twilight's okay with dressing as an older version of herself? Kind if a double standard there, I'm thinking...

Also, I'm willing to bet Luna is the _third_ character dressing as themselves. I bet she came disguised as NMM, thus why her hair is like it is.

Also, I love the fact that the kid had color spots on his coat. It's nice to see, in a land where manes and tails can have up to six different colors (I'm looking at you, Rainbow Dash!), that body coats are finally breaking free from the monochromatic oppression that has been enforced upon them for way too long.

Luna's coat is darker because it's night out. Look at Twilight's coat, it's darker too because of the lack of sun.

But seriously, I am so excited, I cannot express in words how I felt when this popped up. I don't even want to try, this is just too amazing. Trying to categorize it would simply water it down.

I was reading the comments about her sudden change in hair style. Must be using a new shampoo XD. But honestly, if you look at the "Hooded Luna" pic, she still has her old hair style (at least, what can still be seen from under the hood). This can only mean that her change happens during the episode. Which means MOAR EPIC will ensue, rather than Luna just showing up.

1) an older appearance.
2) star mane/tail.
3) darker fur.

I think this confirms the 'de-aged' idea some people have had, and this is Luna growing older and becoming more like her old self...except without the evil...hopefully.

OK, in all honesty...

I am LOVING Luna's look! I always figured she'd either grow into or power back up into a form that was more like her sister.

She should not have the same stature though... Luna IS, after all, Celestia's little sister. I think she is PERFECT! If you look at Season 1, Episode 2, during the party finale, there is a VERY quick clip around 20:42 where 5 of the mane 6 are standing directly before Luna, With Celestia behind her. Luna is LOOKING DOWN, and is still taller than Applejack. Luna has always had a taller stature than regular ponies. It's just easy to miss. I don't think this has changed. As for her coat being darker in these screenshots... Derp... It's night time. We only ever saw Luna during the day, since Nightmare Moon's "eternal" night ended upon her defeat.

Also, to everypony whining that they gotta change all their Luna art... Luna spent a year recovering. I'm sure her mane didn't pop back into it's celestial night form overnight. There is CERTAINLY room for both styles, the same way there is room for foal, filly, young mare, and adult mare Celestia art.

Also, it's been said already...

Pff, I love how some people insist that the pirate kid must be a cow because he has spots, some going so far as to say that he "looks nothing like" the other ponies we've seen. What? We've had nonstandard ponies before; this kid looks more equine than Snips does, for example.

Compare him to the cows in Applebuck Season. They have wide pink noses, big droopy ears, and of course cloven hooves. The little pirate has none of those things.

I get that his being the first pinto we've ever seen is throwing everybody for a loop, but come on. It could even be part of his costume; maybe he's dressed as a famous Equestrian pirate named Pinto Pete, or something along those lines.

Or maybe he really is a natural pinto, which is going to lead to some...interesting OC designs in the future.
