ReplyDeleteI can't wait for Saturday. Discord seems like he'll be an excellent villain, and I very excited to see him start attacking the main 6's personalities/psyche to cause them to lose his "game".
ReplyDeleteAnd for those concerned he's not "bad-ass" enough: I'm fully expecting to see him as a frighteningly powerful opponent when he breaks out of his prison in the beginning. I doubt he just grabbed the Elements from whatever vault they're in and ran; something tells me he may have wanted to get a bit of revenge on some Alicorns for his imprisonment...

I honestly wasn't expecting Discord to look or act ANYTHING like that. I was expecting him to be some horribly evil sly bastard with a stereotypical cackle.

ReplyDeleteWell I for one found that clip to be highly gratifying! As has been said, I can't imagine anyone would really have been expecting anything too sinister for Discord's character and design, considering the target demographic here. Even within the context of the canon MLP universe he has potential to be fantastic; who knows what else we'll be seeing in him over the course of the entire episode.

And somebody mentioned Mad Mod from Teen Titans, I think. If anything he reminds me more of the Amazing Mumbo, which would actually be fantastic to see in my opinion (potential musical number and all). Controlling ponies like marionettes, indeed, wa-hah!

ReplyDeleteBTW, loved the creative use of camera work to communicate Discord's rapid fire teleportation around the place. Very chaotic, but controlled enough that it's easy to know what's going on. The animation was, of course, awesome.

Discord is so much more enjoyable than Nightmare Moon, in my opinion. Nightmare Moon just seemed like the average, run of the mill villan who wanted to rule the world. Discord is having hosent fun doing what he does, and he is so much more animated and bouncy and unique looking, he's extremely fun to watch even with just this minute of animation. I honestly hope he stays for more than 2 episodes, and maybe helps the ponies out somehow in the later ones, because it will be a bummer seeing him go.

ReplyDeleteI love villains in Discord's so-far-established archetype, in the same vein as Him, Jigsaw, and Q. They're so much easier to digest for a character-driven show like FiM because it actually provides a pretty good incentive for things like character study and development, overcoming personal objectives interfering in the way of the friendship that makes them so special, and reuniting with a renewed faith in each other to overcome him in the end.

I'm surprised how many people actually expected a more menacing villain. Even Nightmare Moon despite being relatively menacing (in a world that knows no violence). Discord comes off to me as completely appropriate, I WOULD have been disappointed if he came out as the average villain.

I think the appearance is wonderfully chaotic, the personality/magical abilities obviously points to a Q-esque character (VA aside), and from what we see here it absolutely fits the motif of a character whose raison d'etre is sowing chaos and discord (hence the name) I could not be more excited!!!!!! I WANT IT NAO!!!!!!!!!!

Thank god Discord isn't the 'Male Nightmare Moon' I was fearing he would turn out to be. That would have been redundant and pointless, and I think it's pretty juvenile to think some generic dark, brooding heavy ripped off the cover of a cheap paperback sword and sorcery novel would be better because it would look cooler. Or should I say, make better inspiration for shipfics and saucy/Rule34 drawfriend material. Seriously, SOMEONE will do Rule34 on THIS version of Discord, but not many. No, not many.

ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE DeLancie, and was totally mesmerized by Q in all of the trek series he was in. When I watched the spoiler, I immediately though that was him, and prayed it was.
Now it has been confirmed and I am damn near ready to burst. Bring on season 2! I could not be more ready!
I am very pleased with what direction they decided to go with Discord. At first, I was very confused, because the style of animation and character design for Discord were much different than anything in Season 1.
ReplyDeleteBut after I watched it, I saw the cleverness of the MLP team once again. This is definitely not how I pictured Discord, and I couldn't be happier with this character.
A chimera is perfect, as it manifests the concept of discord, with it's random limbs, a polar opposite to harmony.
The voice acting I can already tell is going to be fantastic, and I am more pumped than ever for Season 2. I can't wait even one more day!

So they did what they do best, they take whats been given to them and make it awesome. I'd say Discord is like a mild Joker.

When they said it would be catering to the brony community, i didn't expect them to have Q be the badguy xD (cause, come on: it's Q. if you've ever watched an episode of The Next Generation or Voyager with him in it, you can't possibly deny it. ReplyDeleteSo naturally when I first saw how he looked I was disappointed - but then when I saw him animated and his behavior/personality I got excited - he's so ridiculous it's awesome, it's a genius character concept.
My recommendation for everyone who try to stay spoiler free, if you accidentally get to see a picture of him and feel disappointed - don't judge him before you see him in action.

Man, I really love Discord's character. He's so much more of a threat than Nightmare Moon ever was, and he's simply a giant troll with massive power. I was expecting something a little less goofy, but I could not stop smiling while he was on screen.

ReplyDeleteWhen I first saw the preview I thought "seriously? That's Discord? What a letdown" but after I watched it threw a few more times he kinda grew on me, I actually like him. A good well rounded character, kinda goofy at some points like when he first shows up and when he leaves. But he's got those more sinister points, honestly when he's slipping between the ponies while explain his "game" he almost reminds me of Scar from the lion king. I'm gonna enjoy watching this guy mess with the ponies.

ReplyDeleteWait a tic... if he really knew about AJ accusing Dash of cheating in that episode, while he was still trapped in stone... O_O Holy crap he's powerful... And let's not forget that Luna and Celestia are nowhere to be seen. I see him as a slightly less psycho version of "The Joker", who may become quite dangerous if the Mane 6 somehow get close to winning his game.
