Could we get an idea of you guys' game libraries? At least a list of consoles.
ReplyDeleteI still stand by my Final Fantasy compilation. No, it's never been released, but I'm sure you could make it work. Favorite games for the characters:
Twilight: Pretty much all of them, but I could see her taking a shine to 6 in particular. Can't quite put why into words.
Dash: Not sure, actually. She isn't much of a JRPG gal. I'd say, with that in mind, probably 12.
Pinkie: Pinkie Pie IS Final Fantasy 5.
Rarity: Her attention to detail would go perfectly with 2's in-depth leveling system.
AJ: 1. It's just a straightforward game, and the bosses tend to have no strategy beyond "hit them until they die".
Fluttershy: I think she'd like the personal storylines of 10.

Kind of curious who would play to win, who's the scrub, and all points between.

Borderlands should be there. The only RPG for the 360 I can think of right now is Final Fantasy.

ReplyDeleteAfter all this, Twilight NEEDS a reprive...like, BAD. Maybe a nice JRPG to calm her nerves, or at least a temporary lack of Pinkie Pie. Heck, maybe she just needs to be alone for a while period.
On a different point, I would actually like to set a proposal forward. I am an avid writer and and even more diehard gamer. I've been enjoying this story since chapter one, checking every day for the next entry. That being said, I would truly love to lend my talents to this piece and be part of the creative process. If you want another writer on board, or an editor or creative consultant or any position you may have available, give me a shout. Kind of hard to respond with this site's layout, tho...any particular way I can contact you?

This fic is hilarious, I love the recation the mane6 give to each game, Gears of War being the best1 I was worried though it was suddenly gonna go all 'cupcakes' in the final scene. Next time pinkie pie, dont go scaring Twilight! :) dunno if you take requests on games, but one I think would be interesting them playing would be either Mass effect, or, if you wanna another bloody game, Dead Space or Mortal Kombat. Lets see how they react to THAT XD

If you are going to go for a chapter to blow everybody away, do the Orange Box. It has 5 games in 1, and I am sure at least 1 of the Mane 6 will find a game to latch onto.
I would like to see them play something like civilization (I've never played 5, but I have played 4).
ReplyDeleteI think their personality would make for interesting and unique play styles.
Rainbow Dash: Would probably go for an early conquest victory, pumping out troops to get the edge. However, I think she would fall behind and maybe get knocked out of the game soon.
Fluttershy: She would probably go for a diplomatic approach to everything, and a diplomatic victory. In the end she would most likely be the least touched by war.
Rarity: I think she would have a few great cities in her civilization, and would be going for a cultural victory.
Applejack: She would have the same goal as Rainbow Dash, but she would be slower and less aggressive.
Twilight: She would try to go for tech, doing whatever she must do to get it, whether it be war or diplomacy. Her play style will most likely give her the edge, and she will win with a space victory when no ones looking.
Pinkie Pie: I'm sorry to say this, but I think she'll try to do something stupid like try to ally with barbarians and not last for much more than ten turns (Assuming she's still aloud in the library).
Luna: Castlevania - "KING of the Night!?! Bullshit! SUCK IT, DRAKULA!!"

If I may make a request, I would like to read how they go with SimCity 4. I have a feeling Twilight would like the micromanagement aspects of it, although may over-fund education. Fluttershy may prove to be good at it, and Applejack would likely have decent money-management skills. I'm not sure how Rarity would go, and it doesn't seem like Pinkie Pie's or Rainbow Dash's kind of game.

ReplyDeleteI love Half-Life, actually. HL, HL2 and HL:E1 were all games I owned and had a great time with. TF2... not so much now.
Anyway my co-author is only partially right. I have a PC, PS2, PS3, 360, NDS. Some of my other handhelds/consoles, like my PSP, Xbox were sold off. I personally don't have much experience with older consoles 'cause I grew up with arcades, but I have a fond memory of mooching of my friends for their N64 and Dreamcast.

Aww, skirmish? Well at least it had Rarity owning and Twilight blowing up at Pinkie quite literally.
Actually, we tried to get a reaction-to-Kane scene in the story, but when we wrote out the entire freakin GDI intro, we found that the chapter was WAY too long for it, so we cut it, and a lot of other stuff, out.

ReplyDeleteThe big meany box that daddy won't let you open is not called a CPU. It is called a case. Inside of this case resides one (or several) CPUs each having at least one but possibly many more cores, at least one stick of RAM, a motherboard, hopefully a hard drive or six, hopefully some form of disc media reader/writer, maybe some expansion cards and, if you really want a gaming rig, a video expansion card or two. Or four.

I've only read part one, and while some elements felt like they were lifted from the show (20% cooler, Twilight Rapidash, Fluttershy's rant), I kinda enjoyed it.

ReplyDeleteHmm, mass effect... I really do not want more than one commander shepard tbh, it would go against the game imo. I'd say that limiting it to maybe a 4 player coop would be best. That said, I do have to count myself curious when it comes to who should play what.

ReplyDeleteRegarding Mass Effect, I say that if you're going to modify the game for inclusion in your story (which I am totally cool with, as long as you call attention to it somehow), you might as well go whole hog and do whatever will be most convenient from a storytelling point of view. Option 1 is the simplest and least fiddly, so I say go with that.

ReplyDeleteOn mass effect, I would say go option one because it would allow for multiple different interactions between different Shepherd(s) and the crew. Whatever you pick, i'm just happy its mass effect, great series so far.

And I want to see Sonic '06 just for the amount of lols as horribly awkward gameplay and entertaining dialouge. In fact, I could see the chapter description now.
"Join an unlikely band of five ponies, as they tackle Equestria's worst beta, in 'LET'S PLAY: SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2006'. Starring Twilight Sparkle as pokecapn, Applejack as KungFuJesus, Fluttershy as medibot, Rarity as IllumionousVespuchi, and Rainbow Dash as the guy whose name I don't remember right now and whom never shows up in another game after this. In fact, let's screw canon and make Pinkie Pie MynameisKaz and throw her in right there at the start too. So it's six ponies now."
The number of people who won't get what I'm talking about is probably a ton, but I had to do it. I'm sorry. Another game I would like to see is probably an old school RPG. Final Fantasy IV? VII? Maybe VIII? Possibly even VI? I don't know. It would just be fun to see one of them.

GH wouldn't have made a difference, too. I've been imagining them all playing in a band and this is how: Twilight as guitarist, Rainbow Dash as bassist (I know many people would see her as a rockin and riffin guitarist, but I see her more as an awesome bass player), Pinkie Pie DEFINITELY as drummer, and I guess Applejack as vocalist. As for Fluttershy and Rarity, they are guitarist and bassist respectively. That's how I envision the MLP band!
I'm totally looking forward to the next chapter; I really wonder how you will accomplish this, for how can a pony play chords on RB or GH with no fingers to press the corresponding notes/gems? Best of luck dude!
Twilight -> Most D&D based RPGs. (A lot of thinking involved and all the effort goes into preplanning)
ReplyDeletePinky Pie -> Killing Floor and anything else with a lot of blood and guts (Not Survival Horror, she's too reckless for that)
Rarity -> Civilisation games like Settlers. (Likes to build elegant cities, but also good with strategic combat)
Rainbow Dash -> Wipeout (High speed racing with guns, what's not to like?)
Apple Jack -> God of War (Strait forward gameplay, beat everything into a pulp)
FlutterShy -> Dues Ex (Is good with sticking to the shadows and not being seen, the game makes killing opponents completely optional, she's also hela cool with a gun)
Rainbow Dash needs to play Burnout: Revenge.

Realistically, Tetris should've came first, and seeing how Equestria is pretty much almost in the middle ages, it would make more sense if they had NES's and Atari's, NOT XBOXES.

ReplyDeleteBut seriously. Getting ABSOLUTE score on Tetris is actually a RIDICULOUSLY grand feat. You have to not only 'beat' the game, but beat it in a fashion so that your score adds up to EXACTLY that however-many-nines.

Been thinking about the Mass Effect question. I don't like option 1 much; it pulls the ragtag bunch element out if everyone's another Shepard.
ReplyDeletethink Option 2 is the most realistically workable one, and for that reason I'll vote for it.
Option 3 is good, but would run into practical problems if two players had a Shepard of the same class. For example, if two Vanguard players wanted to join a game, they'd both be best represented by Wrex, who is a variant on a vanguard (I hope I've got the class name right).
It should be noted that I base this vote on practical concerns, but haven't been at all bothered about some of the oddities of the story, Like why one of Equestria's first games is C&C3, or why they went straight to the current generation instead of starting with Pac-Mare.
I should probably be counted as a vote against option 1 rather than for 2.
Haven't played Mass Effect, so I can';t actually answer your request. However, I think you should have a chapter with Ninja Gaiden. Maybe have one chapter with the original NES version and another with the 360 version.

I like option 3 best. And please, if nothing else, do a reaction flashback of Pinkie playing Portal during the final test scenes. Pinkie actually believing GlaDOS wouldn't surprise me. Pinkie dying three times during a trademark gasp upon dying the first time in the (spoiler) would be freaking hilarious.

Street Fighter would also be fun. Or even something like Left 4 Dead, where the ponies are forced to work cooperatively. Rainbow's competitive nature would surly lead to hilarity in both scenarios.
May I also suggest something like Catherine? The intriguing love triangle and sexual nature of it could be very interesting to read, seeing as the ponies have no prior experience to such things. Well, at least canonically.
Can't wait for the upcoming Mass Effect chapters! Really love what you've written so far.
Only just started but since it's on the xbox 360 it'd only be fitting that the conclusion of the series ends on a RRoD.

ReplyDeleteAs soon as Pinkie Pie first said it felt slow I knew they'd end up playing Dragonforce...it's like the yardstick for fast playing, regardless of whether you're a guitarist or not. Best cover I ever saw was on electric violin - mental stuff.

ReplyDeleteAJ has her GnR classic rock, Dash gets old school punk from Jet, Fluttershy with singing The Eagles is a match made in heaven. And of course, Pinkie Pie with Dragonforce. I should've thought of that when I first started reading.
I wish they would've done all of Welcome Home, (I'm a total Heed-head) but the only real disappointment was Rarity and Lady Gaga. I'm sorry, but I hate that pop garbage. I hear it on the radio, and that's enough for me. I didn't even bother listening to that one and just skimmed over that part.
And another thing, Katy Perry? That's just as bad! I can't stand-- Ohhhh, I see what you did there... :P
Anyway, overall, well done. I really enjoyed it. Can't wait to see what the CMC do in the next chapter.

ReplyDeleteYou, good sir, have pulled off the mane six playing Rock Band amazingly well! There was no doubt Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie would be warped into the riff-rockin' vibe of playing the game. Those two are an obvious duo for owning the guitar and drums!
I loved how you described Fluttershy's performing on the bass and singing; majorly adding the fact that her voice was too inaudible to nail the singing was perfect.
Color me bewildered: I would have never imagine you making Rarity quite engaged in the game (not to mention pitting her with drums). I say her reaction to a favorite artist was the best; I chuckled at how you described her glare.
Applejack singing had me captivated! There was no betters artist for her than Guns 'N' Roses. In spite that I have no attention to that band, you got me liking that song she sang.
The greatest part was of course the last song they played (not spoiling this one)! Anyone would be blown away that that song was the conclusion of their time. Simply, awesome.
I loved every word of that chapter. I highly recommend this story to anyone who loves MLP and video games. A top-notch piece of work!

The Rock Band chapter was even more awesome than I hoped it would be! This is quickly becoming one of my favorite fics on the site.
ReplyDeleteIn regards to the poll at the end of chapter five, here are the characters I think the CMC should try out:
Apple Bloom: Deadpool/Ryu (Both of them are the kinds of martial artists Apple Bloom was trying to emulate in Call of the Cutie, after all.)
Scootaloo: Dante (She's going to gravitate towards anyone cool, and Dante is the first one that comes to mind for me.)
Sweetie Belle: Felicia (I get the feeling Sweetie would go for someone girly, and Felicia is definitely feminine.)
Chapter 4 was really Awesome,probably my favorite so far.

Chapter four was amazing.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely adore, adore, adore this story.
There's such a natural flow to it; the envisioning of the ponies and the games together is so smooth that we don't even notice any issues with the meshing of the two concepts (I don't think there are any). Also, I absolutely loved the Equestria Girls song drop. That was absolutely necessary.
However I do have one complaint: when reading something the verb used in the gerund is "poring" not "pouring".

This has been a great thing so far! Its been a fun read so far, can't wait to see the next ones! Option 3 sounds like it would make the most sense for Mass Effect. Also, for the CMC's characters, I think I'll just list my favorites. Felicia, Dormammu, Amaterasu, Zero, Dante, Tron Bonne, Deadpooll. And here's a few ideas for games (keeping with the current PC/360 theme):

This is the only fan fic I've read and I'm loving it so far, and since the next chapter is gonna feature one of my favorite games this year, I'm officialy hooked. But for the characters the CMCs would use, I'm gonna use my knowledge of their individual personalitys and of the cast of MvC3 to think of who would use who.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, Sweetie Belle, she's a little bit spacy but patiant I think so I'd imagine she'd use more starter friendly characters mixed with more complicated ones that she'd rely on more as she plys, I think her team would be; Hulk, Dante and Ameterasu.
Second, Apple Bloom, she has adopted part of her older sister's personality of being stubborn and a bit aggresive at times, so she'd use characters that would have higher health and are capable of fighting well without assits, I think she would use; Tron, Thor and Haggar.
Lastly, Scootaloo, she adores Rainbow Dash so much I would be surprised if she didn't try a team similar to that which Rainbow Dash would use, so a team of mobile and fast characters would suit her best, she'd use; Wolverine, Spider-man and Chun-li.

I haven't really read that many MLP fanfics so far, but I do have to say that this is one of my favorites. Though it has it's flaws, the games are generally recognized, with characters staying true to their personalities, and eve some interesting references here and there.

The end of Chapter 5 was absolutely priceless, although not unexpected. And I found the image of Sweetie Belle, Scootaloo and Applebloom suckling on their forehooves almost unbearably adorable.

ReplyDeleteIf these newfangled video game inventions are indeed brand new to Equestria, how can there be a Third installment of the series if they haven't even had a first or second installment of the series? Or for that matter, how can there even be a Marevel vs. Coltcom if they haven't yet established any Coltcom video game characters?
I mean... wow this makes no sense in the context of the story. At least with Halo Reach there wasn't a number attached to it and since it was a prequel it could easily work into Equestria as the first installment of the series.
If you wanted a fighting game why not go with Street Fighter or Tekken or Mortal Kombat?

That was pure fun reading about the ponies having pure fun! Rock Band was the perfect choice for the group; nothing brings friends together like that game. Nice idea including the links to the song choices, it really helped with the immersion (Not to mention getting to see those hilarious comments posted). Hell, I was able to project their voices into the songs! Well, except Rarity. Lady Gaga has one of those voices you can't drown out very well...
In all, a terrific end to the Mane 6 focus. Everything went right, everyone had fun, and we figured out Pinkie Pie is Herman Li's long lost twin... somehow.
Gonna give myself a breather from all the awesome-ness, then move on to read Chapter 5.
There there, little fillies... it's OK... Gears of War is indeed an awful, awful game and ponies who'd even THINK of letting foals play it are horrible and should be imprisoned for life.

I've read ALL the comments and I've only seen ONE other bitchin' about the lack of "Welcome Home". Seriously? How dare you taunt us. :C. All in all, love the fic. Although, I would have suggested Red Alert 2 for the RTS game. I feel its the best in the genre, if being from 2000-2001.

ReplyDeleteGreat chapter, as usual. I don't know if I mentioned this yet, but I love the way the Youtube videos are used in conjunction with the text. Sweetie Belle giving that inspirational speech to the others with the Battle Hymn of the Republic in the background was gold.
