ReplyDeleteGood to know. This format would lend itself extremely well to return to at any given time when inspiration strikes, one would think. No matter how much time has passed.
Curious though, only Celebrities actually on the show, as guests in the studio with them, have been Celestia and Spitfire, right? I mean, season one has given us Photo Finish, Hoity Toity, Sapphire Shores... Perhaps even Trixie :P Eh, whatever. I'll be the first to admit that for the most of them it would be hard to come up with ideas ^^
Christmas special sounds good though :P If that ever gets written.

ReplyDeleteVinyl isn't really based on any specific radio personality. In the beginning, I sort of tried to fit her in as like a very, very mild version of a shock jock DJ. There was a bit of inspiration from Howard Stern, I guess. Not so much in how her personality or mannerisms was, but just from her attitude of doing whatever she wanted, despite things like regulations or common sense. But really I just had her fit in that archetype. She ended up evolving from that.
Oddly enough, most of the morning radio I used to listen to was unlike how Vinyl turned out. (Elliot in the Morning used to be what my carpool listened to everyday, but I don't think Vinyl has any mannerisms taken from anyone on that show).
So no, I didn't consciously derive from anyone in particular. But if there is radio personality in Dallas who is coincidentally like Vinyl like you say, I'd actually really interested to hear that since a real DJ like her would be pretty awesome.
Well, he's more just the annoying pretend(?)-jerk part of Vinyl with cohosts who react like Octavia - "You can't say that to the Mayor!" V sems to have much more sweetness below the surface.

ReplyDeleteWell, Equestria seems to have a lot of schizo tech anyway, like no internal combustion engines and still using candles for nighttime desk lighting while apparently having refrigerators and advanced optics (telescopes and such). I suspect some of that is because ponyville is kind of a backwater that may have limited electrical service, and some because unicorns and pegasi and just plain pony power are sufficient to take over for tech.
That said, what equestria really runs on is the Rule of Funny, so whatever is most amusing is true.
I love the characterization that's done in this. I can see Vinyl introducing Octavia to Apocalyptica, and their cello covers of rock songs. I can also see you slipping in links to a few good songs during their song breaks. 'I don't wanna be' by Eric Segerstedt in particular, would be a good fit for Scratch herself, don't you think?

Congratulations! You've not only created a very well done story that gives the ponies great personalities and makes them insanely likeable through their little radio shows, (except Blueblood, but I doubt it's easy for anyone to make HIM likeable) but you've also managed to add Vinyl Scratch to the constantly increasing list of background ponies that I adore as well as making Octavia get closer and closer to being bumped to my favorite pony.
ReplyDeleteThe story is an interesting and different concept, yet it all feels so natural and wonderful at the same time. If there was a broadcast in Equestria, I would find it hard to believe that this wasn't that station. The characters also come off as a fair representation of what they could be in regards to the actual show, while managing to make them come off as the "at ends" bickering best of friend duo that's too adorable for words and are meant for each other (intimate or otherwise).
If someone were to make these as audio recordings with good voice actor's I'd look forward to it and enjoy every moment of it. I'd also love them very much.
I read through the 3 chapters and the shipping label baffles me to no end.

I have read and reread this story ever since it was first posted here on Equestria Daily. And the one thing that keeps running through my mind is how this DEMANDS AN AUDIO VERSION.

I think the best was part 2. I think you should concentrate on character development since i think this is what here really works and make it so awesome.

I have a question to ask you. First of all, yes I do love your writing, I did vote this 5-stars, and I'm glad this is so popular and oh so very awesome.
But, I wish to ask you about the very very end of your story.
That line... "This concludes our broadcast day. Good night and good luck." I have heard it before.
Not by friends, family, the internet or another radio station... but on a movie.
An old black and white movie about... gosh, to be perfectly honest I'm not exactly sure what it was totally about, but it was this old movie about a radio station where at the end of the broadcast the main talk guy always said "Good Night, and Good Luck." In fact, now that I think about it, I believe that to be the title of the movie!
Is that where you got that line from? If so, where did you see that movie?
I'm interested in where you've seen it, because I can guess it's not too popular of a movie, unless for perhaps a college history class.
Anyways, if you see this, please reply! I am eager to see what you say. If I'm practically speaking giberish to you and you have no clue what I'm talking about, then ok! Lol. Thanks!

I was honestly scared by the end of this story. My heart was beating. I didnt want the series to end! You pulled that trick with the 'end of our brodcast day!' thing! And then right there, on the next page was--oh, you're good. You're very good. 5 freaking stars.

ReplyDeleteI think I can take this one. "good night, and good luck" was the tagline of one of the, if not THE greatest newsman who ever lived, Edward R. Murrow. Among his accomplishments: Helping to bring down Senator Joe McCarthy, which brought an end (largely) to the blacklisting and horror of HUAC and McCarthyism in America.
The Movie, "Good Night and Good Luck" was an incredible look into the story behind the end of that era. It was directed by George Clooney, who also starred in a supporting role in the film. Great movie, watch it some time, really cool.

Wonderfully executed. Having the shipping really start in chapter 3 (really more like late chapter 2) allows the reader to get to know the characters and actually care about their relationship. And drawing the ship out over such a long period of time, rather than just slapping it on at full throttle from the get-go, is something that isn't in enough fics.
ReplyDeleteOverall, great job, and the finale moved me thanks to the wonderful characterization and being able to see the process of the relationship being formed. I usually am left feeling either awkward or unsatisfied by shipping, but this was an exception that ended up being an absolute joy to read.

ReplyDeleteThis is a very good story. Vinyl's personality has turned me into a fan, and I actually can't wait to see more of this. Very nicely executed and humorous. It stays funny while not going too far, which I give it a lot of credit for. Octavia's personality seems to compliment Vinyl's exceptionally well, making them a perfect pair for hosting a show.

Oh dear god... so cute. chapter 2 and 3 just so very cute. Can't stop grinning. Author, hear me! You sir kick ridiculous literary ass. The characters are just great! Write. MORE. Because I just love Vinyl and Octy! The diamond dog or the Pony, W/E (yes, I do have a voice that leads me to think I'd pass as a decent soft spoken mare or as A stuck upup Prince if the realm (my voice being a fairly generic english accent (despite being born and raised in Australia That can go either way. Just need a little practice, I think, and I'd be able to do it. Also, my personality REALLY rings similar to how you've done Blueblood. What can I say, I'm an Egotists)

ReplyDeleteI can't help but feel this Fanfic brings out how awesome the community is.
ReplyDeleteTwo side characters, each only appearing once (I think) got an epic fanfiction, setting up both's character type and emotions.
And the comedy had me stopping every once in a while so I wouldn't suffocate. Over all, t'was an awesome fic.
There are very few fanfics that can have you d'awwing one moment and then rolling on the floor laughing literally 4 seconds later.

Normally I can't stand shipping, not because of non-canonical relationships, but because they tend to be written unrealistically. This, however, is a HUGE exception to the rule. So well written, so believable. I suppose it doesn't hurt when you basically get to create the personalities yourself without having to worry about whether or not they act OOC, but frankly, that's not what draws me to this. It's the depth of emotion each pony brings that pulls me in. I actually teared up a bit here and there, and that's hard to do with fan fiction. All I can say is BRAVO and I can't WAIT for season 2. :D

Oh dear sweet Celestia, this was so awesome. I read all this in one sitting and I've got to say, I don't think I've ever laughed this much in months. This is now my most recommended piece of fan-fiction. Not only was it a sweet pairing of my favorite pair of background ponies, but the way you wrote their characters was as if you reached into my gray matter and dragged them straight onto the screen. As you can guess at this point, I have only good things to say. Great pairing, great concept, great execution, great everything!

ReplyDeleteVinl and 'Tavi play off each other so well, they're an absolute perfect pairing, really dynamic and I love how they start to bond and becomd friends (that's the most important thing for me in a shipping story).
Really great emotions, sad, cute and really funny.
I would like to read more if there ever plans to expand.
