In The Art of The Dress it could be considered to go further as Rarity's Element is Generosity, she offers her time and talent freely and without asking for recompense though the song implies that they do 'Make sure that it stays within our budget' and her friend basically constantly demand more (To many lines to quote here : >) and while in Rarity's nature to do so the pressure of time 'Deadline looms, don't you know the client's always right Even if my fabric choice was perfect Gotta get them all done by tonight' and other events deal her harm trying to *fulfill* her nature with her expertise/talent going underappreciated. I deliberately don't use the word 'Talent' here by it's self as I'm under the impression that that Rarity's Talent deals with that which is valuable, most notably gems, though I could also argue that anything made to the standards of a Mastercrafts pony like Rarity is intinsically as valuable as many gems not counting the number's of them she often uses. Theoretically that makes Rarities Talent very flexible, if she could train herself to such standards then her talent perhaps would kick. A little off topic though, sorry bout that : )
Someone or ones on the writing staff read ...THAT certain fic.
Psycho Pinkie is psycho...but her friends keep her...placated! Just how I like her, until her true Pinkie-ness is unleashed and then, I'd like her even more.
Well Pinkiee always seems to skirt the edges of madness now we see what happens when her sanity breaks. Also the power of friendship and fun is apparently what keeps her hair puffy and pink. You'd think the others would have inlisted a bit more help in distracting Pinkie, course I doubted even they were aware of how persceptive she can be.
@Madfish Hmm, I like the idea of this, but how might we equate RD's loyalty with her inferiority complex (unless perhaps there's multiple ways to crack Rainbow Dash)? Everything else is in place though; I can definitely see Twi cracking without her magic.
Gent, Rainbow Dash is the only one I'm struggling sor evidence with, I need to reawatch the Griffon ep again to see if anything jumps out at me. Fluttershy's stress at not helping Filumena and then shattered by thinking she'd killed Filumena counts in my opinion (Kindness/Animal Talent) I'm going to try and put together a short artical on it, but I need to rewatch a lot of eps to confirm things and not make stupid mistakes
When Pinkie Pie loses and becomes gloomy again so reminded of a Ren and Stimpy episode when Ren decides to become a hermit and talks to his alternate personalities. That was brilliant!
This show is EXACTLY like sex. It's so much fun when you're doing it, and then it's over and it's just awesome... And then fifteen minutes later you want more.
When rainbow dash came to get Pinkie Pie, I was totally expecting Pinkie Pie to make Rainbow Dash stay at her own "party".After the party, Dash leaves, and goes home to sleep. Then I suppose afterwards the other ponies would come looking for the Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash, only to find they've been replaced with "those inanimate objects" and Pinkie Pie has made a life-sized cake version of Rainbow Dash to not be lonely anymore.. and when the ponies walk in, we see pinkie pie eating up the cake, (which is filled with strawberry jam) and rainbow dash is probably sleeping in her house..
Woke up this morning on my birthday to find the new pony ep is a birthday episode. Awesome!
I have to say, Pinkie Pie was completely terrifying in this episode, but at the same time, I just wanted to give her the biggest hug when her hair went straight, reverting back to the sad, joyless Pinkamina from Cutie Mark Chronicles. That part honestly broke my heart to watch.
Pinkie was always rad, but this and Cutie Mark Chronicles added a ton to her character. Now she seems like she actually has a reasonably complex personality, beyond just being a party factory all the time.
The funniest part of the episode for me was they kept putting Honest Applejack in situations where she had to lie to her friend's face. She's just SOOO uncomfortable doing that. Also positive laugh marks for Haybob Squarepants and Rainbow Dash drawing a watch on her wrist "oh look at the time." What really made this episode exceptional though is it humanized (ponyized?) Pinkie Pie. She is no longer just a conduit for off the wall humor and slapstick jokes. She is a real person with fears, flaws, and needs. Fantastically done.
I don't really think this was an example of "Cupcakes Pie" but more like "Insecure Pie". The note about the amount of hot water available in Ponyville was interesting. And I liked how Rainbow Dash's confrontational nature got the better of her and she talked back to "Rocky". I must also say that it was actually a good idea for the gang to send Rainbow Dash to get Pinkie Pie. Being such a loyal person really helps in putting up with Pinkie Pie's mental freakout.
Awesome episode! The crazy Pinkie Pie birthday party is probably one of my favorite scenes of the series. Pinkie doing all the accents and even not sounding like herself when she talked was really cool and hilarious!
Rainbow Dashes loyalty if ever called into question would snap her especially if she wasn't being loyal to her nature. She stopped being loyal to her nature when Rarity entered the competition, thus she was a bundled nervous wreck. She needs to be "True to your heart" the song, because loyalty requires steadfast resolve to never betray someone's expectations even if it is said ponies own expectations that one has to be loyal to.
I like Pinkie with straight hair better but I can't fault that I also love her happy go lucky personality as well. If she could combine both of those together you'd get someone who's going on a hot date with Rainbow Dash. Followed by a hot date with Twilight. In fact Pinkie is the new Rainbow Dash! Everyone start shipping her across the board.
Rainbow's biggest weakness is mixed loyalties or betraying someone. (She betrayed Gilda but Gilda betrayed her first)
Rarity's world can be shattered with but a few words about how awful her work is. (Being generous and having it thrown in your face)
Twilight is broken down if anything goes horribly wrong in which she takes a part in causing. (Basically when she's entirely wrong is when she snaps, she has snapped more then the other characters in the show. She is also a walking powder keg of raw power.)
Applejack can't be forced to lie, she can white lie but telling a true lie would destroy her ability to trust herself. (In other words she will try to fullfill any crazy promise she makes even if it kills her and it most likely will because breaking a promise breaks her. She's honest and if she makes a promise she has to honestly follow through with it even if she doesn't know she's telling a lie to begin with. She couldn't farm all those apples without help, but she could without Big Macs help. She never lied, she just didn't get the truth she wanted.)
Pinkie needs to laugh and play or this happens, she's a freaking ninja and she can run as fast as Rainbow flies, plus she can clone herself and appear inside solid objects at will. She's the second most powerful pony besides Twilight, give her ninja stars inside of muffins and a bladed katana carved out of a French baguette.
Fluttershy can't hate anything and if she does she starts to crack, see "green isn't your color" if she was a model for any amount of time longer how hard with she have cracked? She's tougher like Applejack in taking longer to truly crack. She's too kind but when she does crack she goes into stare mode instantly and rips into whatever she's staring at viciously promising pain and other things.
Twilight is the most susceptable to breaking as she doesn't have a defined defense mechanism.
In other words Twilight needs the five others to guard her from snapping like a magic bomb from any kind of overbearing pressure placed on her.
I don't want to burst your analysis but in Applebuck Season AJ said: "I said I can handle this harvest, and I'm gonna prove it to you! I'm gonna get every last apple out of those trees this applebuck season, *all by myself*!"
That's as specific as it gets, so she did break her impossible promise
What a fantastic episode! I had high hopes for it as I really like Pinkie Pie centered episodes, but this one really took the cake. This episode will be great for showing others how awesome the show is.
This is episode was GRIMDARK AS FUCK. well, about as grimdark as a show aimed at ~10 year olds gets. InsanePie is probably one of the scariest things I've ever seen in a very long time.
My heart broke when I saw her hair flop down and go stright. As soon as I saw that I was like "Oh my days, this is serious! Her sadness undid something that only the power of a Sonic Rainboom could awake!" Upon thinking that I look at Pinkie's flank and almost shat myself when I couldn't see her Mark anymore. I started to think that episode was taking a huge leap into dark territory because it looked like she had lost her Cutie Mark - and therefore her purpose in life.
Thankfully, I realised that it was just a weird perspective blocking the view of her Cutie Mark, as it was present in the next shot.
Still, everything went pretty dark from there on. Pinkie even darkened physically, which only emphasised her deep sadness and hurt. Her scenes of insanity were entertaining though, if somewhat frightening, and Rainbow arguing with rocks balanced everything out.
Pinkie regaining her curly hair and sane side made me go "E3reactionguys.jpg", though it did kind of invalidate my previous belief that the whole thing was incredibly serious. I thought that only something powerful such as a Sonic Rainboom could re-awaken Pinkie's true happiness, but then again, perhaps friendship is a far more powerful magic?
This episode does so much to add to the Elements of Harmony and how they fit in the season. As well as how emotions affect ponies.
Luna had deep jealousy, and was transformed into Nightmare Moon. Pinkie Pie felt abandoned and hated, which led to her losing her sanity and even going to the dark side. These two things are related to eachother, but are not quite the same. I theorise that the "Nightmare" part of Luna's transformation is a separate entity, which possessed and corrupted Luna. I believe that Nightmare is pure evil in a physical form, and can latch a part of itself into the heart of anypony who allows their 'goodness' to become weak. Pinkie Pie lost her mind, and became depressed and pretty angry towards her friends. She became darker, and much weaker (emotionally). Basically, if she was left longer in that way, and Nightmare got to her, then a Nightmare and Pinkie Pie transformation would've taken place. "Nightmare Pie" would possess not only the reality-bending powers Pinkie Pie naturally has, but also the power of the Element of Laughter. From an alternative story standpoint, that makes for a truly complicated and terrifying enemy, and a story that would get darker before it got lighter.
I had a feeling that Luna was corrupted by "Nightmare", as suggested by a variety of fics, but this episode makes it all the more plausible.
There's also the discussion of how the ponies have kept true to their Element throughout the season - without explicitly stating that they are doing such a thing. That is also a very interesting thing to point out.
This just goes to show just how amazing this show is. There is far too much continuity and little references between supposedly isolated episodes for this show to be just another kid's show. The writers appear to have been delicately keeping all the episodes weaved together through clever writiing.
That was weirdly distressing for an adorable show about ponies aimed at little girls.
- I thought the moral was sort of weird. "Trust your friends" is fine as a moral in a general sense, but uh... Well, I'll come back to this.
- Trust is a really big issue for Pinkie Pie, apparently, since a lot of episodes heavily involving her come back to this. It pretty much WAS the moral of Feeling Pinkie Keen, as well as the whole "breaking someone's trust is the fastest way to lose a friend FOREVER" thing.
- Pinkie DOES trust her friends. Keep in mind that they're the ones that started lying to her. Also keep in mind that she actually believes their lies at first, or at the least is willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
- So what I think initially sets her off is that her friends are lying to her. The abandonment issues come up as a result of this.
- That's why the moral is kind of messed up. Pinkie Pie DOES trust her friends, and only stops trusting them after they give her a reason not to.
- Soooo... the other five ponies sort of went against the elements, by lying and being disloyal to Pinkie by violating her trust and so on. The apparent generosity of the surprise party was... not really in Pinkie Pie's benefit so it comes off as a sort of faux-generosity. Unkindness is implicit. And then Twilight misses the point entirely, not realizing that her friend has /issues/ and ends up blaming PP's problems on a lack of trust.
- Finally, Pinkie suddenly getting better at the end was about as disconcerting as her sudden breakdown. The abruptness made it feel less getting better and more... I don't know, the remnants of a shattered ego desperately trying to pull itself back together.
Well, the MLP team sure set a high standard for themselves with this ep. The next and last episode will have to feature some hazardous amounts of win, lest the season ends in a disappoinment.
@Anonymous This. This is exactly how I felt about the episode. Still probably my favourite episode, but the gang got way too easy of the hook about lying to her and making her upset the whole day. Making a party is not a good excuse enough, just look at their faces when they explain that they prepared for her party; Apparently not caring that she got upset by their lying.
The road to Hell is paved with good intentions...
(The link is a picture of Sad!Pinkie I finished yesterday)
It seemed to me that the moral wasn't just "trust your friends", but to assume they have your best interests at heart, even if they seem to be keeping something from you. If Pinkie hadn't assumed the worst when she found out they'd been lying, but instead trusted that they wouldn't do something like that, she wouldn't have ended up feeling so bad.
@Rannva - I tried replying but my post never went through so whatever. Just a few other observations I was thinking about:
- Twilight might not have known what kind of state Pinkie was in. RD was the only one that saw her REALLY breaking down, and even then none of them were really made aware of the reasons for her breakdown. From Twilight's perspective, Pinkie just kinda... starts freakin' out for no reason.
- Pinkie has a history of not communicating very well, and Twilight has a history of not really 'getting' Pinkie, which was sort of the point of that whole parasprites thang.
- Twilight also has issues gaging others' feelings as well, which is... apparently why she was moved to Ponyville in the first place, but besides that, I can't be the only person who thought a lot of Spike's wigging-out in ep24 if Twilight would've just talked to him (Granted, Spike WAS being kind of a jerk and his motivation was jealousy, but it feels like there're parallels between ep24 an 25).
- I kind of wonder how quick Pinkie Pie was to forgive them, at that. I mean, did she even forgive them, or did her brain jut shut down the other way? Also given how quickly she switched between angry/happy, it... sort of makes you wonder what her real personality even is.
- Oh my god am i psychoanalyzing a cartoon about colorful talking horses whaaaaat
to anon above: Yeah, ponies do that when they go crazy. best to just analyze and move on. but I will agree with the people saying that PP's return to sanity seemed... abrupt. It is a kids show though, and with only so much time for a single episode, the climax and after effects had to be put in rather quickly. Or Party Pinkie really does have Cthulu level knowledge of everything [and somehow the ability to control her (in)sanity for good], and "normal" mode blocked out that capability until she saw they wanted good for her, which brought back Party mode Pinkie and all her abilities. I fear she may be powerless in normal mode, yet in party mode... the most powerful pony ever...
When are we going to get the first batch of Pinkie/bucket of turnips or Pinkie/rock pile ships? Frankly, I'm at the edge of my seat with anticipation. Make it happen.
@Anonymous It is indeed uncanny. When I saw the scene where Rainbow Dash comes to crazy!Pinkie, I started to suspect that someone involved with the production of that episode might have actually read Cupcakes.
Remember that Pinkie Pie isn't bound by the conventional laws of motion and positioning. She has appeared from Apple Carts, Mirrors and buckets of pumice, as well as surpassed Rainbow in getting from one place to the next before (Griffon the Brush Off anyone?) It's entirely possible she can teleport, or create small warp fields using the power of sugar.
@Anonymous I also found it uncanny that it was Rainbow Dash of all ponies who came to get crazy!Pinkie. Maybe someone involved in the production of that episode has even read Cupcakes. If you think of it, it's not completely farfetched.
Man... I finally watched this last night (I wait for HD releases so I can have the best possible pony experince). I have to say this is now tied for my favorite episode with winter wrap up...
I actually really like when pinkies hair is down. She was pretty badass.
Not really, you'll notice that Pinkie botched the interrogation by literally telling Spike what she wanted to hear.
She should've asked why the others were avoiding her.
And whoever mentioned waterboarding:
It's good she didn't use it: That's for unimaginative wusses. Bamboo shoots under the finger and tow nails, broken glass, THAT'S how you torture someone. ^_^
I've been in Pinkie Pie's shoes before. I've watched the episode several times, and the emotional impact of Pinkie's 'deflation' still hits me every time, just as her return to form fills me with joy. even now I'm kinda tearing up...
I think we're over-anylizing Pinkie's mad scene. It just seemed to be a cute horror parody to me. It does not make Cupcakes anymore plausible. It does not Make Pinkie Pie unstable by nature. It just means we get to laugh at her completely losing it for a little while.
Absolutely can not believe how nopony has brought up the obvious Flutterdash shipping fuel when they're making their excuse. They even start finishing each others sentences. Pretty adorable.
>mfw Cupcakes AND Party Never Ended are both canon. When Dash was alone with crazy Pinkie, I was genuinely afraid for her safety.
Starting to seem more and more like the writers are reading these fics.
Just rewatched. It's funny how afraid of Pinkie they all seem the entire way through. Of course, it's probably because the ponies don't want Pinkie finding out about the surprise party, but... Even at the end, when Pinkie freaks out at everypony, it seems like the ponies are walking on eggshells. Seems like they've had experience with Pinkie blowing up before and are keen on diffusing the situation quickly.
Pinkie's got a lot of energy, but it's not necessarily happy. As we see, that energy can backfire. She's a total manic depressive. Funny how well these ponies fit the descriptions of these personality disorders.

ReplyDelete- I thought the moral was sort of weird.
Yeah, seriously, what the heck?
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteI have three words about your Nightmare Pie theory:
"Why... So... SERIOUS!?"
Well, the MLP team sure set a high standard for themselves with this ep. The next and last episode will have to feature some hazardous amounts of win, lest the season ends in a disappoinment.
ReplyDelete@Speakwell
ReplyDeleteIt was a bell.
@Kurogo
ReplyDeleteThat's EXACTLY what I thought. Glad I'm not the only one.
@Batty Gloom
ReplyDeletePonies do not write English. As far as I can tell, the cake says, "Happrm NWhlh puhum Nrn." Sounds like a horse to me. Or maybe a Houyhnhynm.
Oops, sorry, that should read, "Houyhnhnm" -- which is arguably what these ponies actually are.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous This.
ReplyDeleteThe road to Hell is paved with good intentions...
(The link is a picture of Sad!Pinkie I finished yesterday)
So -- what happened to Twilight's wasp nest?
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteIt seemed to me that the moral wasn't just "trust your friends", but to assume they have your best interests at heart, even if they seem to be keeping something from you. If Pinkie hadn't assumed the worst when she found out they'd been lying, but instead trusted that they wouldn't do something like that, she wouldn't have ended up feeling so bad.
This episode seemed like it was going to lead to the "Cupcakes" fabric... Anypony else think that?
ReplyDeleteAfter this, I'm not sure Cupcakes is just a fanfic...
ReplyDelete@Rannva - I tried replying but my post never went through so whatever. Just a few other observations I was thinking about:
ReplyDelete- Twilight might not have known what kind of state Pinkie was in.
- Oh my god am i psychoanalyzing a cartoon about colorful talking horses whaaaaat
to anon above:
ReplyDeleteYeah, ponies do that when they go crazy. best to just analyze and move on. but I will agree with the people saying that PP's return to sanity seemed...
ReplyDeleteThis telegram has inspired me to do something for my birthday just to send this message out as an e-card.
ReplyDeleteA PMV i made of pinkie pie psycho party scene http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlrTE1bCKCU
ReplyDeleteBeing Happy all the time is creepy. This ep shows Pinky's smile can go upside down. She's as pony as the next!
ReplyDelete@Speakwell
ReplyDeleteIt was a bell.
@Kurogo
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking that. Glad someone else thought about it.
@Anonymous It is indeed uncanny. When I saw the scene where Rainbow Dash comes to crazy!Pinkie, I started to suspect that someone involved with the production of that episode might have actually read Cupcakes.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteRemember that Pinkie Pie isn't bound by the conventional laws of motion and positioning. She has appeared from Apple Carts, Mirrors and buckets of pumice, as well as surpassed Rainbow in getting from one place to the next before (Griffon the Brush Off anyone?) It's entirely possible she can teleport, or create small warp fields using the power of sugar.
The part where the can muzzled Twilight was definitely a subtle dig against the people who complain that the G4 designs don't look like ponies at all.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous I also found it uncanny that it was Rainbow Dash of all ponies who came to get crazy!Pinkie. Maybe someone involved in the production of that episode has even read Cupcakes. If you think of it, it's not completely farfetched.
ReplyDeleteMan... I finally watched this last night (I wait for HD releases so I can have the best possible pony experince). I have to say this is now tied for my favorite episode with winter wrap up...
ReplyDeleteI actually really like when pinkies hair is down. She was pretty badass.
When people don't come to Pinkie's parties, she makes a few batches of Cupcakes instead.
ReplyDeleteWhat if rainbow dash was the only pony who didn't have plans this afternoon?
ReplyDelete"Spike proves why torture never works..."
ReplyDeleteNot really, you'll notice that Pinkie botched the interrogation by literally telling Spike what she wanted to hear.
ReplyDelete@Batty Gloom
ReplyDeleteJust tossing my hat in the "Pinkie Pie looks great with straight hair" ring. I think it'd make a nice accent for more formal parties.

eyup, that pretty much explains it...
I think we're over-anylizing Pinkie's mad scene. It just seemed to be a cute horror parody to me. It does not make Cupcakes anymore plausible. It does not Make Pinkie Pie unstable by nature. It just means we get to laugh at her completely losing it for a little while.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely can not believe how nopony has brought up the obvious Flutterdash shipping fuel when they're making their excuse. They even start finishing each others sentences. Pretty adorable.
ReplyDelete>mfw Cupcakes AND Party Never Ended are both canon.
ReplyDeletePinkie's got a lot of energy, but it's not necessarily happy. As we see, that energy can backfire. She's a total manic depressive. Funny how well these ponies fit the descriptions of these personality disorders.
@Anonymous
ReplyDeletei think it first showed up in call of the cutie at the party then it was remixed for the montage in show stoppers.
okay.we've had this.WHAT ABOUT THE BEST NIGHT EVER?!
ReplyDeleteIs it me or does the song playing on the record player kinda sound like "Hello" by Martin Solveig ft. Dragonette.

This was my first dose of MLP:FiM.
ReplyDeleteI watched it out of complete curiosity. Arrived at the last seven minutes of it and I reached my first phase of bronydom.
Thank you Pinkie, I mean, Pinkamena, for making me a brony!!
